Laurence, meeting Granby:

what a miserable fellow of poor temperament, holding unfair grudges. he dislikes me quite intensely and the feeling is mutual.

Laurence, meeting Tharkay:

a rather unsavoury fellow who seems quite inclined to leave us for dead in the desert who seems to enjoy mocking me. i must be mindful that he does not double-cross us.

I’m usually not someone who wants to buy a new printing of a book just because it has a different cover but the Temeraire art by Rovina Cai has me so tempted!

There is even spine cover art for the entire collection!

This series remains one of my favorites and I implore everyone to read these wonderful books! Dragon riders in the Napoleonic wars, with rich cultures from around the world, intense battle scenes, dragons arguing for fair rights and pay, and more!

got the temeraire books for christmas, and the fountain scene is definitely more emotionally fraught in print than it seemed in audio

some lukewarm takes:

• tharkay's hands shaking when William "I do not want to be having this emotional conversation" Laurence says "We need to talk" like tharkay has had a night, ok? He's nearly been killed and the girl he was going to marry is marrying someone else, and Laurence has finally got the measure of him. He wants a BREAK but get perceived, idiot!

• when Tharkay goes "maybe I thought you guys wouldn't worry about me" and Laurence snaps "kindly do not represent yourself to me as a fool."

• Tharkay resents being other people's sidekicks! He works hard to be master of his own fate and make his own choices, and if that means making people openly dislike him so he doesn't have to worry whether they secretly do, so be it.

• but it's not fair to the people who are genuinely trying to be friends

• Laurence does some boundary setting! He would like Tharkay to stay but quit screwing with him. Laurence is not going to have someone hanging around that is actively pretending to be unreliable. It's unfair to the rest of the crew to have to worry and unfair to Tharkay himself when his actions prove him to BE trustworthy. Laurence is like "you're a good man. why are you lying?"

• And then Tharkay going "YOU have the world turn against you for no fault of your own and see how you handle it," but immediately apologizing for the way his behavior has mischaracterized Laurence as someone petty and resentful

• Laurence noting a facial expression that he can't quantify when they make up like. Laurence this man has just decided he's going to follow you to hell and back. You've just saved this man from the rest of his life. You've seen this expression before. Granby and several other people have worn it

man Tharkay knows how to make an entrance. kicking down the door to the dinner room in Macao with an eagle on one hand and a letter all the way from England in the other at the start of BPW and then showing up at Danzig at the eleventh hour with twenty feral dragons who have somehow agreed to fight and carry people at the end??? I need him.

Am I????? Completely obtuse??????

Five times I’ve read Black Powder War and I am only JUST NOW realizing the last poem carved into the stone at the exit of the Jiayu Gate was written by Lien?????

“Ten thousand li between me and your grave, Ten thousand li more I have yet to travel. I shake out my wings and step into the merciless sun.”

How many times are we told that she was a scholar and a poet.

That was…. Unexpectedly sad.

I've just started the third novel of Temeraire and honestly, I'm not one that cares for sequels particularly,and I don't care for something that's taken past it's needed conclusion, but I could literally read a hundred temeraire novels and not get bored

Black Powder War:

Arkady and his pack of other 'feral' dragons steal cattle belonging to the sultan of Istanbul, causing a diplomatic incident. While Temeraire points out that they were simply acting out of ignorance and did not understand humans 'owned' the cows, and were merely hungry, a frustrated Laurence rather feels this was quite self-evident.

Empire of Ivory:

Laurence and his team of British military (wo)men steal medicinal mushrooms belonging to the Tswana people. While Laurence points out that they were simply acting out of ignorance and did not understand the local people owned the mushrooms, and merely needed it to treat their own dragons, the frustrated local officials clearly feel this was quite self-evident.

Self Reflection Had:

New Temeraire Covers

These beauties are by cover artist Rovina Cai, and they are for the new trade paperback editions of Namoi Novik's Temeraire series.

When books get rereleased with new covers, the aesthetics can be a bit hit or miss, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't take me a hot minute to get used to the new Temeraire covers. I loved the bold, swirly, fantasy vibe of the original covers, and the new covers feel like they lean way more into a "history with dragons" vibe. That new vibe is arguably more accurate to the books, and they actually share aesthetic vibes with the Lady Trent memoir covers. All that to say that these new covers have really grown on me, and I am fighting with myself over getting the new releases because *PRETTY*.

I'm not even half into Black Powder War and Laurence is always so angry or stressed, it's funny.

First he's stressed because he fears being late for the eggs

And then he's furious against Tharkay. But in the end he's just stressed because they got late and Tharkay is not a bad guy, just very confusing (and let's be sincere a little bitch too).

He feels like Temeraire is too extreme in his beliefs but he also he fear he would like better to stay in China

And then they meet wild dragons, there is a avalanche and he is angry again.

He discovers that Lung Tien Lien is going to France and she is far ahead of them.

They get even MORE LATE and god he is so stressed.

And in the end after weeks of negative feelings the man discover that the deal is gone and that they will not take the eggs. The whole situation is fishy as fuck.

So now he is stressed AND furious.

I just feel like the poor man is very close to having a very legitimate breakdown.

(Bonus point : Before all of that, he has to wear something different than his uniform and proper little Laurence is very embarassed. )
