a great line b/c "saburov baby what happens to this idea 24 hours later once artemy is cleared of the murder" has so many answers... either he keeps believing a blind grudge against artemy for the entire game OR he changes his mind on this immediately after having realized the correct answer OR he has no power to actually pursue the thread of the olgimskys' manipulation. and those three things are just how saburov is all the time :-)

Was reading a mystery from the 1930s and turned the page and found a surprise.

#My opinion on this author is that it's not actually reasonably possible to solve the mystery because his idea of providing clues is #basically just leaving holes in the timeline where anyone could've been doing anything and nothing saying whether they were doing what they #said they were doing or indicating that they weren't or providing any info besides people were in the general vicinity #And the detective basically just decides that X did Y and that Z knew about A and B interfered with C and such for about 3 layers deep #You can't disprove it as the reader but it requires a lot of suppositions and assumptions about things that aren't shown on the page

megatron: origins is a whole-comic reference to the UK miners' strikes. it's by a british writer who specifically said in an interview it was based on that. it's not about communism, but british socialism in the 80s, which isn't exactly the same thing. (it is still pretty poorly done, but for different reasons.)

Thank you for the clarification! While I would argue that the actual presentation does lean more toward communism than socialism, in that Megatron's speech seems to imply (albeit vaguely) some sort of dictatorship of the proletariat, and more clearly, the seizing of power through radical revolution, it's good to know what the author's original intentions were. I'm interested in looking into the historical event that inspired it.

Side note, I know they weren't written by the same authors but in MTMTE JRo did go the extra mile with the communism references by having Nightbeat call 'Towards Peace' a Decepticon manifesto and Quark worrying about what would happen when the manual classes take over.

i'm also not a fan of how even when going the trad pub route, authors are expected to use social media to market their books. and many times it feels like being expected to sell a personality to get people interested enough to look at your work

#just leaving this as that #i drafted a longer version #talking about drama that had popped up about the book 'the black witch' and how booklr tore it to pieces years back #saying it was racist #and mainly repeating what others were saying so i doubt most of them even read the summary #but i lost the plot of my own post so i stopped #i only saw mentions of ppl harrassing muir and bardugo so i don't know much of what happened there #i think in muir's case it was ppl finding her homestuck fics? #and i remember ppl freaking out about 'the love hypothesis' being reylo fic w/ the serial numbers filed off #ik lots of ppl hate the 'mix of x popular media and y popular media' way of marketing #but that can't even be put on the authors for the most part that's usually a pub house choice #but some indie authors might use it too b/c the big idea is to catch someone's attention so they'll then read the actual summary #and then hopefully the book #losing the plot again #i'm just annoyed and auntie isn't answering my text when i need to be there for dinner

#which also just happened. these experiences are roughly equivalent. snmcmdmcmdllc #detective conan #laughs awkwardly #LIKE. idk how to put into words. detective conan's fandom is.... something #these are people who have been invested in the (often romantic) trials and tribulations of a 17 year old who looks 7 years old #for upwards of 20 or 30 years. this is not a casual reveal #detective conan is not some labor of love and artistry that the author has a specific vision for. it's the longest cash grab that never end #it has had movies during golden week every year for longer than i have been alive and distributes it in several countries #and kaito/shinichi is very popular. i think if you know anything about manga/anime fandoms i don't even need to explain why #for the author to publicly canonically rip up one of the most popular ships of the series... it's hard to imagine that it wasn't deliberate #it's not just a matter of 'omg just ship what you like ignore canon'. they HAVE been doing that (conan has a canon female love interest) #this is very destiel-coded in the sense that it feels simultaneously like the author acknowledging that section of the fandom #while doing the worst possible thing about it. like NO ONE wanted that dnvkdmlvmdk #except for me. this is so funny. I've ALWAYS HAD SUSPICIONS OKAY #kaito and shinichi's canonized same-face syndrome might have started as a meta joke. but remember. this is one of those series #where people are frequently revealed to be a.) not dead all along and b.) secretly someone else all along and #c.) secretly related to someone plot-important all along. all these have happened MANY times #when you have a franchise that has run for this long you kind of have no choice but to up the stakes to the point of absurdity #so basically. it feels like walking in with pizza to the burning room meme except the author was the one to set the fire

Thinking about writers in tiny fandoms that turn out huge, sprawling, beautiful long fics. So much work and time put into a work that will only be read by a handful of people. A true labor of love. And those fics are so incredibly precious to the handful of us who find them.

#red white and royal blue #lb #okay so 1. its well written. sincerely. #2 it knows the GOAL of its story so in its own way its Plenty deep #in regard to a. romance. b believable lived in characters c hinted emotion and biased pov narration #d political commentary social commentary international commentary generational commentary family trauma commentary #e excellent at what seems to be its theme which is showing how to connect to people you see as different #and like. the way that ties into the core romance and ties into the leads individual family trauma and fharacter arcs #and the way f OUTSIDE the novel how that affects the reader #the novel expects all readers to connect to this democrat politicial loudmouth half mexican texan child of divorce #whos stubborn as hell and somewhat self centered and so Mean to a guy he barely actually knows (when novel starts) #and thrn of course Alex is asked by his life to Connect to Henry. and the readers even if they are a TON like alex #still will also find connecting to Henry a leap (after all most of us simply are NOT royalty and know no one who is #even if we know public social media figures. its not to rhe degree of the Fantastical levrl of Prince Henry #and i think partly the character is a prince rather than Old Money generally because it TAKES the point further #it makes it so unrelatable to nearly all readers. so it asks us and alex to be open and get to know someone we simply cant judge or guess #ok anyway my point 3. i fucking HATE writing advice and heres why #different authors who are GREAT tackle the challenge of writing wrll very different. theres somr advice to #avoid writing thought felt wonders etc type words. this novel does it. and i feel does it well #it keeps the pace snappy in a DENSE book that needs it. it helps create the biased unreliable pov narration of alex #by telljng us not what he Actually thought but what hes PRETENDING TO HIMSELF to acknowledge or not. #which is alsl how i use those words. and its a fun time when the character is lying to themselves and readers have to notice #and get to be in on it
