صنع فينسنت فان جوخ هذه التحفة الفنية أثناء إقامته في بلدة أوفير سور واز الجذابة، والواقعة في المنطقة الشمالية من فرنسا. كان قد سافر إلى هناك بناءً على نصيحة شقيقه ثيو، بحثاً عن العلاج لمشاكله الصحية العقلية. وبكل أسف لاقت حياة فينسنت نهايتها المريعة في أوفير سور واز، وتمثل هذه اللوحة إحدى أواخر ما عبر عنه في رحلته الفنية.

مر العمل الفني بين يدي شقيق الفنان ثم أرملته قبل أن يجد طريقه إلى حوزة جوليان لوكليرك. وهو شاعر وناقد فني فرنسي متميز، إشتهر بتنظيم معرض فان جوخ الإستعادي الإفتتاحي في باريس عام ١٩٠١. ومن الجدير بالذكر أنه كان متزوجاً من فاني فلودين، عازفة البيانو الفنلندية الموهوبة التي تصادف أنها أخت النحاتة الشهيرة هيلدا فلودين. في عام ١٩٠٣، إتخذت فاني قراراً ببيع هذه اللوحة الرائعة لمندوبي أنتِل "Antell delegation"، بهدف أن تصبح جزءاً من مجموعة متحف أتينيوم المرموقة.

كان هذا الإستحواذ المهم بمثابة لحظة تاريخية، حيث أصبح أتينيوم، المتحف الوطني الفنلندي، أول متحف في العالم يمتلك عملاً للفنان الإستثنائي فينسنت فان جوخ.

tul was at the risd museum and posted a bunch of monet and other artists, but not a sign of van gogh (and they do have his works there - one painting and two sketches, if my memory serves me well), so now tul is enemy #1
