I havent heard about the songbird! Can we get that story?
Lmao yes of course
So when I was about... probably 7 or 8? My mom and I went to the Cleveland Zoo.
For context, I grew up going to the much smaller zoo that was closer to my hometown, and that is the one that I still remember with the most fondness (especially that summer zoo camp program that you and I did together one year, that was super fun!). But the Cleveland Zoo wasn't too far away, all things considered - just a few hours by car. And it's got a bunch of things that the local zoo did not have.
Such as an aviary.
The aviary is the ONLY thing I remember about that trip - actually it's the only thing I remember about the Cleveland Zoo in general even though I'm fairly certain I went there more than once, but this memory blotted out literally everything else surrounding the Cleveland Zoo.
So in the aviary, at least when I went there as a child, you were given a little cup of... food of some kind? I THINK it was like. Nectar/sugar water, and was for the hummingbirds, but it might have been seeds? There may have been a selection of both. I legitimately do not remember the contents. I just remember crushing that paper cup in my hand while screeching in pain.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
See, this little trip happened in the fall - probably on a teacher work day or something, when I was out of school, and after the family business from the previous story had closed for the season so my mom was free. And during the previous summer, I had been allowed to get my ears pierced. I didn't have a lot of earrings at the time, so I was mostly still wearing the piercing pair.
Which were little studs with pale blue balls - they looked pretty similar to this
Tumblr media
Now. The Cleveland Zoo aviary has a lot of birds flying around freely. And they know that people have food, because pretty much every person walks in with one of those little cups.
I very clearly remember having a delightful time watching birds land on my hand to eat out of the little cup, flitting around my mom and I because we were pretty much the only people in there other than a zookeeper.
I felt a bird land on my shoulder. No biggie.
I felt a sudden SEARING PAIN in my earlobe.
The little shit on my shoulder had seen my earrings and decided "oh that is very food-shaped" and BIT ME. And when I screamed and jerked my head, it decided to HANG ON.
This was about the point where I reflexively crushed the little paper cup that all of the polite birds were eating out of and scared them off. But not the asshole on my shoulder, oh no, it decided that it was actually a bulldog and was going to hang on to my ear for all it was worth.
So now I'm flipping out, my mom is trying to shoo it off and making no progress, the zookeeper runs over and is trying to help my mom and is also making no progress, and the bird is still absolutely convinced that if it just holds on long enough, that tiny bit of painted metal will magically turn into an edible seed.
The zookeeper finally whapped the bird a few times with her walkie-talkie and it decided that my earrings weren't worth that sort of nonsense and let go, flying off without a care in the goddamn world
I wasn't bleeding or anything, but my earlobe was noticeably swollen for several days after the fact, and I have a probably lifelong fear of small birds now
Hawks? Eagles? Vultures? Herons? Cool.
Sparrows and finches and robins? Can fuck RIGHT off.
I don't even wear earrings anymore and my piercings have long since closed but I still don't trust those little shits.

burn me (burn me to ash)
Just when Lucy thought things might actually be turning around for her, with a possibility of promoting to lieutenant at her firehouse, and her relationship with paramedic Maggie Sawyer somehow outlasting her insecurities, a pair of ghosts come back to haunt her.
-
The room fell into darkness, the white text of the movie credits not enough to provide light.
Maggie expected Lucy to move right away, like she usually did, going to take the DVD out of the player as soon as the movie was over.
She didn’t.
She didn’t move from her spot, sitting between Maggie’s legs and reclined back.
She didn’t even shift her head from where it rested on Maggie’s shoulder. If it wasn’t for her fingers softly moving back and forth across Maggie’s forearm, Maggie would have thought she was asleep.
Maggie pressed a kiss to the side of Lucy's head.
"What's been on your mind?"
Lucy stilled completely.
"I know something's bothering you," Maggie gently pressed. "If you want to talk about it, you can."
Lucy sighed. She turned her head so her forehead brushed against Maggie's jaw.
"I just…the office fire last week, the woman I pulled out reminded me of somebody." She sucked in a breath. "Somebody I lost a long time ago."
She wrapped her fingers around Maggie's wrist and dragged her hand to the burn scar that wrapped around her hip and thigh.
"We were fifteen."
Maggie sucked in a breath. Her fingers curled around the hem of Lucy’s shorts, her knuckles brushing against the scar. "I thought that was from work."
Lucy shook her head. "It's actually why I became a firefighter." She took a deep breath. "Her name was Alex. She was my best friend." She paused, fingers back to trailing across Maggie's arm. "We were fifteen and alone in the house. We were having a Halloween marathon because the remake was about to come out and we wanted to watch every single movie in the franchise before going."
She shifted Maggie's hand down to the tattoo under the burn, an on fire clown mask, the flames curling up around the scar.
"We were watching Halloween 4 when we forgot about the food we had left on the stove. Then there was fire and…" She let it a ragged breath. "I was bad. Alex was worse. They flew her to the closest burn unit but she didn't make it."
"Shit," Maggie breathed out.
Lucy let out a sardonic laugh. "Yeah. The woman I saved looked a lot like what I would assume Alex would have looked like if she had grown up.” She shrugged, her shoulders shifting against Maggie’s chest. “It just brought a lot of it back up."
Maggie pressed another kiss to the side of her head. "Thank you for telling me."
"Thank you for listening."
-
The folder was crisp, but not quite new. She opened it and the wife stared out from the firefighter service picture clipped to the top corner of the first paper.
She tapped her finger on her table.
The wife of the man they were about to release from prison in the hopes he would lead them to the gang he ran drugs for.
But, also the firefighter who had pulled her out of the fire. The firefighter she couldn’t stop thinking about.
Something about the firefighter was familiar, deep where her murky memories should be clear.

Every time I've seen anybody be like 'when you take out a loan, it's up to you to pay it' in regards to the student loan forgiveness I'm just
I was sixteen
I was sixteen when I took on the first of my loans
I had no idea what I was doing and was mostly just going along with what people were telling me to do about school
Of course I was going to college and the way to get there was student loans, that was what was presented to me
I was sixteen
I'm currently working on graduate school applications, and this time I know. This time I truly get that this decision could land me in debt for twenty years.
Last time, I was sixteen and I couldn't even comprehend twenty years as a length of time
Just fuck off

If you had told fifteen year old Alex that she would end up on 'Dancing With the Stars', she wouldn’t have believed you for anything. At that age, I was a semi-pro surfer and hadn’t acted in anything outside of school plays. If you had told fifteen year old Alex she would be the first woman to dance with another woman on 'Dancing With the Stars'? Good chance she would have punched you.

Pros to aphantasia
ever since finding out about it, and that I have it, my general attitude around aphantasia is ‘well fuck y’all for being able to see shit in your mind’. but, really, it’s just how my brain works, and I’ve been trying to change that attitude as I think of ways not being able to visualize can be a positive
1. no visuals during panic/anxiety attacks, very helpful when it’s ‘person I love is going to suffer and die horribly’ attacks. I don’t have to actually see them like that
2. less scarring from the typical scarring comments. Do I like hearing about the idea of my grandparents having sex? No. Am I forced to visualize it by my traitor brain? Also no. Never actually understood why it scarred people so much cause I was always like ‘people have sex? but it’s not like i’m seeing it’ but y’all are and that sucks for you
3. same as above for gorey stories
4. for me personally, I don’t get scared by horror novels, and I’m p sure this is why. I’m just reading words and that isn’t exactly scary. (conversely, as somebody who write horror, it also means I struggle at times figuring out how scary what I’m writing is. I’ve sworn a scene wasn’t scary, then sent it to a beta and been told ‘wtf, that’s terrifying’)
I can’t think of anything else for now, but there is something nice to thinking that, as much as people who can visualize can see good things, they can also see bad things and I get to skip that experience

This is your reminder to not just automatically apply ‘non-binary’ to everybody who isn’t a man or a woman
Saw the meme on this post and had to make my own version
[Image ID: a two panel meme with Hannibal Buress, a black man with glasses.
In the top panel he is looking down at a desk with four different Pride flags edited on top, each flag labeled underneath. The flags are - Agender, Gendervoid, Genderqueer, and Non-binary.
In the bottom panel he is looking up with text reading ‘These broadly overlap but the distinction matters to some people and that’s okay’.]

Fun fact! 'Pepa' is likely short for either Josefa or Josefina, and sometimes i imagine her doing something that gets her fullnamed by one of her siblings
I headcanon that the only person to call her Josefa is Alma when she's scolding her (probably happens more often than not)
Julieta maybe when she's reeeeally pissed and in older sister/mom mode.
Bruno's just like: "wait I thought your name was Pepa?"

I honestly think Andy (and Quyhn and Lykon) would have learned to read as soon as they realized reading and writing were a time consuming, portable activity. 6,000 years, the first of which she was canonically alone, would have been so boring and dull in between the battles and long term activities. I think all immortals eventually start picking up every hobby under the sun just for something to do with all that TIME. So i do think Andy is literate in almost every language she can speak
I am not the dictator of Old Guard literacy headcanons, you’re free to think whatever you want! But since you sent this to me I’m going to explain why this doesn’t ring true for me, and it’s because reading and writing as a portable leisure activity is, on the scale of the Old Guard’s lifetimes, relatively new. Writing - in most of its major forms - starts out as a way to record who owns things, becomes widely used for religious texts, and does not become widely popular as a way to record narratives or as a leisure activity until...like...well, the first novel is famously the Tale of Genji in eleventh-century Japan, the Four Great Novels in China are written from the 14th-16th centuries, Don Quixote is more or less the first European novel in the 17th century. Even the long narrative poems of the medieval period are not that long - and they’re still very much intended to be read aloud.
This is because writing, as a permanent record in a portable fashion, is expensive to produce and carry around. Wood-block printing is invented in China fairly early on (~300 CE) but the blocks have to be re-carved frequently and that takes time. Basically everywhere west of India, all writing is done by hand by skilled craftspeople. In the Eastern Mediterranean they at least have papyrus which isn’t too expensive, but it doesn’t last all that long, certainly not if you’re carrying it around with you. In Europe, post-the split of the Roman Empire, it’s done on parchment which is made from animal skins and is therefore, you guessed it, expensive. Even after rag and wood-pulp paper comes to Europe, pre-movable type printing, a single book in Europe costs about as much as a house. (I read at least one fic where Crusader Nicolò is carrying around a gold-leaf Bible in his saddlebags and I did an absolute spit-take, that’s a RANSOM right there). Writing letters? Much more common earlier. Reading as, like, a hobby? Unless you’re rich and able to create a collection, not really a thing until well after 1150.
In 2020 I think we overestimate how common books (even in scroll form) were historically because...look, my school library - for a small-ish high school - had six times as many books as the entire Vatican library during the medieval period. We are an incredibly literate society. We read and write all the time, every day, like I’m doing right now. For the vast majority of history entertainment did not come in the form of writing. It came in the form of songs and stories, told orally. Writing for a really long time is a practical tool of government and religion. And, again! People can imagine whatever backstories they want. But I personally find it really hard to believe that anybody in the Old Guard is into reading and writing as a major leisure activity before 1500-ish, depending on where they’re hanging out. Maybe a bit earlier if they’re spending a lot of time in East Asia.
Unless we’re imagining them forming their own small writing group to keep themselves entertained, which 1) is hilarious and 2) would leave an amazing trail through history that would drive Copley nuts.

I know it's not on any bingo cards or anything, but i just saw the prompt 'unable to get to injured teammate' and i was wondering if you could write it for Marjan
“Fuck!” Marjan yells as her feet begin to slip on the edge of the cliff. It was supposed to be stable enough for a rescue but it’s crumbling. “Fuck, everyone get back! Get away from the edge!”
Unfortunately, it’s too late to heed her own warning, and the ground goes out from beneath her feet before she can run. She goes down, falling past the trapped hikers they were attempting to rescue, hitting several rocks and a tree on her fall until she’s finally caught on a ledge some 500 feet down. She hit her head somewhere on the fall, but luckily it’s just her body that takes the brunt of the final impact. Lucky, however, is a relative term.
“Marwani, come in,” her radio crackles. It sounds staticky from the distance. She’s amazed it isn’t broken. “Are you okay?”
“I’m alive,” she manages to say back.
Her legs are both definitely broken. She can tell from the pain and the awkward angles they’ve taken on. The wind has been knocked out of her, and the pain in her torso suggests she may have broken some ribs, maybe her pelvis. Her head is bleeding into her eyes. One arm has a compound fracture- her dominant arm- and the other has three probably broken fingers.
“I’m in bad shape, Cap,” she tells the radio.
“What hurts?” That sounds like TK now.
“Both my legs and one of my arms are definitely broken. I think I cracked some ribs and my pelvis and some fingers too. I’ve definitely taken some blunt force trauma from the fall. And I hit my head on the way down, it’s bleeding pretty bad.”
“Try to stay still,” Captain Strand says. “We can’t reach you from here, it’s too unstable. We have to go down to the bottom of the cliff and climb up to you. Should take us maybe half an hour, do you think you can make it?”
Marjan wants to say yes.
“I don’t know.”
There’s silence for long enough that  Marjan wonders if her radio is broken before it crackles back to life.
“TK is going to rappel down the cliff with a medical bag to stabilize you until we can get you to safety, okay, Marjan? Just stay where you are and stay awake.”
“I’ll do my best.”
“Marjan?” It’s Nancy now, speaking into the radio. “I want you to talk to us, to help you stay awake.”
“Yeah, sure.”
She wipes the blood out of her eyes and finds her hand to be dripping.
“I’m losing a lot of blood,” she says. “I’m getting dizzy.”
“Just stay with us, Marj. Tell us about your roller derby team, how’s that going?”
Before Marjan can answer, she’s hit with a bout of nausea, turning her head to the side to throw up. There’s dark splotches in it like coffee grounds. Blood.
“Bad news. I just threw up, and there’s blood in it.”
“TK is almost there,” Nancy promises. “Then we’re gonna meet him at the bottom. Help is coming, Marj, stay with us.”
When Marjan looks up, she can see TK only about a hundred feet above her, slowly making his way down. In moments, TK touches down on the ledge beside her and unclips his harness.
“I’m with Marjan,” he radios, and kneels beside her with the medical bag.’
She can hear the sirens going above them, rushing to get to the bottom of the cliff and back up to them. He whistles through his teeth at the sight of her and kneels next to her body. The first thing he does is secure a C-Collar over her neck. The second is to press a wad of clean gauze to her forehead.
“You’re gonna be okay,” he promises her. “I’m right here. Our team is coming for us. Just keep your eyes open, Marjan.”
“I’m scared.”
His face softens. “I know. But you’re gonna make it, okay?”
His big duffel bag appears to contain splints, which he manages to affix on her arm and legs. He tells her they’re sending a backboard when they get up to them, and Tommy and Nancy will have blood ready in the ambulance. As he speaks, he readies a needle and flicks the air out of it.
“What’s that?”
“5 of morphine.”
He injects it into her and moves down to her lower body.
“Can you move your feet for me?”
She struggles, but manages to press down against his palm with both feet, proving she’s not paralyzed. That in of itself is a relief, until she has to throw up again.
“I think I’m dying.”
“No, no no no no,” TK assures immediately. “You’re not dying. No one’s dying. You’re gonna be okay.”
“I’m tired.”
He changes her soaked gauze. “No, Marjan, stay awake for me.”
“Can’t.”
He starts to raise his voice, trying to get her to stay with him, but the blood loss, morphine, and adrenaline crash have her drifting off.

Last line tag meme - tagged by @throughalleternity thanks!
Rules: in a new post, show the last line you wrote (or the last wip you drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or however many you like).
From something I've been working on:
I chose the rabbinate as a career for love, for them, and for me.
The line makes more sense in context with the paragraph above it in the thing I'm working on, but I'm keeping that to myself because it's personal.
Tagging @go-sullivan @qualitytrees @nerdsbianhokie @avidreaderffn @gwatson2304 @standinshadowedsilence if you've a line you want to share. Also anyone else who's not tagged is free to do this too.

Do Mochi and Arwen know each other? Do they get along?
No, and they probably won’t- Arwen has a VERY high prey drive and a history of killing small animals- rabbits, rats, geese etc. She’s never caught a cat but she has made very serious attempts on the neighbor’s outdoor cats before so I’m pretty sure that she’d try to kill Mochi if she ever met him.
I love Arwen dearly but acknowledging her nature and taking the appropriate precautions is part of responsible pet ownership, like keeping her in a secured yard, using a gentle leader because it’s the one thing she can’t roll out of.
