I haven't watched anime (or any show, really) for a while, but fuck man, Undead Girl Murder Farce really got me hooked, and I think it's mostly down to its two lead characters.
Like, yeah, the premise of the show itself is good. It's fucking excellent; a pair of Japanese yokai travel to Europe to solve Monster Crime™ is an instant grab for fans of horror, paranormal, and mystery (of which I am all three), but from episode to episode I keep finding myself drawn specifically to the main duo and their antics.
First you have Tsugaru, a man who, thanks to being half-oni, will have his life cut prematurely. But rather than him being mopey, he's decided to just have a good time while it lasts. If the candle is burning twice as fast anyways, he's going to make sure it burns twice as bright no matter the circumstance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And on the other hand you have Aya. Unlike Tsugaru, she's immortal, but has decided--now that she's a severed head--that life isn't worth living without a body. It's a cold and logical decision that she only changes her mind about once Tsugaru convinces her that there's a chance to get her body back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And despite their very, very different circumstances and methods of thought, what makes them the most entertaining to me is how similar they are.
Both of their perspectives give them a sort of detachment to the world, because for both of them (for different reasons) anything that happens, no matter how shocking or tragic, is only temporary. Which leaves them free to react to almost any situation however they want. This is best demonstrated through their shared interest in gallows humour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That last one in particular is of note, because that bit they're doing happens in the middle of them questioning a man about his dead wife.
And it's not just that they make jokes in dire circumstances; they laugh at each other's jokes too, showing appreciation for the other's sense of humour.
We're only seven episodes in at the time of writing, but it also seems so far like they're both good examples of static character arcs. In other words, they're characters that don't necessarily develop a lot over the course of the story, but do develop the world around them through their actions. Another good example of a character like that is Sherlock Holmes, which is a hell of a coincidence because he's also a character in this show. But it makes sense for Tsugaru and Aya because of their detachment. They can't really be shaped by the world if they're rarely affected by anything in it.
The issue that typically arises from characters like that (at least I find) is that, without becoming interesting over the course of the story, static characters need to start their stories by being interesting, which Tsugaru and Aya both do extremely effectively. We haven't gotten a ton of their backstories yet, but it's pretty clear from everything they do and everything they say what kind of people they are and how they think, and that is fantastic character writing.
TL;DR: watch Undead Girl Murder Farce (or Undead Murder Farce? The anime seems to have dropped 'girl' from the title) because it's really fucking good.

Undead Murder Farce - First Impression - SPOILERS!
Just got some time to watch Undead Murder Farce, Episode 1, and I LOVED it!
Tumblr media
Looking into it, the series was originally a three volume long novel series that was then turned into a manga, which also had three volumes, and is finished. It also didn’t run in a Jump Shonen magazine, which means there is a higher chance I will like it (I tend to like Shonen in non-Jump magazines like Pandora Hearts, Nabari no Ou, both of which were Monthly G-Fantasy series).
I think you can feel the novel source material influence in this first episode. I love how they did the exposition. There was a bit of an info dump at the very beginning of the episode, with text on the screen, but they had the text come across as someone speaking to you and the way they incorporated the text appearing with the animation and visuals of the opening scene was just really nicely done.
The conversation that then occurs between our main characters was very nicely done and handled too. It was essentially a consultation, so it makes sense that they would discuss their individual situations, determine what each can get out of the deal they are making, and make a deal with each other. I’ll get to the deal part of this episode in a second.
First, I want to just briefly mention that the music was great, I loved the vibrancy in colors, and the animation was very nice too. There were some interesting shots as well, such as this one:
Tumblr media
The way they have the more colorful part of town, where they are walking to and end up, floating in the background, with the poor and desolate part of the town that they are walking through in the forefront was quite cool.
There was a lot of excellent visual direction in this series, like the scene where Tsugaru talks about why he joined the “circus” / “freak show” / “sideshow attraction” like gig that we see him performing at.
Tumblr media
A spotlight is placed over him, like he is on stage. This is something anime have used before. More often though, it is solely for some kind of comedic purpose (or the characters are actually on stage, like for a school play or something). But the way it’s used here reminds me more of Princess Tutu’s usage, where the series itself is based on ballets and the characters are essentially having their lives being written and controlled by another character in the series. There is less a comedic element, and more a thematic element.
Also, a very 4th wall breaking element without, once again, going into a purely comedic direction. Some of his movements may seem comedic, like here:
Tumblr media
But neither Shizuku nor Aya are shown to be amused by this. No sweatdrops or anything like that either, the tone is kept consistent with them just listening intently to what he is saying. Since this is him basically letting them in on his revenge fantasy toward the people who give him the money to live, while at the same time dehumanizing him and viewing him as nothing but entertainment.
Also, god awful people that wanted him to harm a cat (and later his boss, that then goes on to have him fight a cat (under the guise that it’s a bakeneko, a type of cat yokai). I’ll talk about this some more when I get into themes and narratives that the series looks like it’s going to explore.
The way Tsugaru takes “the camera” and moves it around and very agilely moves around the room as he is explaining adds a dynamic element and keeps our, the audiences’, interest, at the same time that he, in-series, is keeping the interest of Shizuku and Aya - his potential new employers.
Tumblr media
He is putting on a show for them, but in a very aloof way, which gets into some interesting characterization elements, that I’ll talk about in a bit. The placement of small shots of terror and gore, makes for a different experience (for the audience) with this “spotlight exposition” type scene than the usual as well.
Tumblr media
I think the visual direction of the episode is what makes it so engaging and what causes the time to go by so quickly (the episode literally flew by for me) despite the viewers being given so much information to digest in this first episode.
Now, let’s move on to the character designs. The character designs are fun and engaging, as are the personalities we’ve seen so far. They definitely are based around established tropes on some level, but I can already tell that they are being used and engaged in ways we don’t commonly see.
For example, the maid (Shizuku) is kuudere, she doesn’t speak much, only speaking and engaging in things when commanded. She also states that her feelings don’t matter. This doesn’t anger the male MC, Tsugaru. He facepalms, but that’s it. He also just casually mentions to her that that makes her more like a puppet than a human.
Tumblr media
The same with Aya, she has a traditional Japanese beauty appearance, and her way of speaking is very direct, straightforward, and demanding. She has an aspect about her that feels very himedere like, but she doesn’t necessarily act like she is a princess herself. She has lived too long for that and is just a more “business first” type of individual. Once again, we don’t see Tsugaru getting annoyed by this, there is no tonal breakage to have characters swat at each other or anything like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One moment did imply that that was something that may have occurred if Aya wasn’t just a head. But, well, she is just a head right now, so that takes away such tired tropes from the writing and from the original author’s repertoire of tropes to use.
Finally, Tsugaru himself. He has an aloof-ness and cynical outlook on life (philosophical too) with a bit of a joking side to things that reminds me a great deal of Xerxes Break from Pandora Hearts (being dedicated to a lady is also another aspect, like with Break to Sharon, I’m hoping Tsugaru’s dedication to Aya remains non-romantic).
Tumblr media
But he delivers it all in a more deadpan voice, not the more eccentric and teasing way like Break. That makes sense, since Break is a character based off of The Mad Hatter. What we see of Tsugaru’s character feels more like the Break that we get in the latter half of Pandora Hearts.
The thing that makes Tsugaru’s character really stand out though is that his type of character isn’t one that we usually see in a Main Character role. This more quirky male character type is usually reserved for side, secondary, or minor character roles. So I find that fascinating and am intrigued to see how this will play out.
I brought up Tsugaru and Aya’s relationship here because I am a bit side eyeing that aspect (I’m not sure on ages, but since Tsugaru is depicted as drinking, I think it is safe to assume that he is over the age of 20, usually underage drinking isn’t really depicted much in Japanese media). So far, I feel like it isn’t going to be the usual kind of adult-minor or “she looks like a child but is really 1000 years old” type of stuff that pops up in anime and manga far too often. She is 14 physically, that was the age she was killed, and therefor the age she stopped aging, but they really do have her act and sound and feel more like an adult. That doesn’t necessarily mean much though, I find it more telling how they decided to present and depict the contractual kiss that the two have.
Tumblr media
They discuss the kiss in a very matter of fact way, this is another aspect of their business contract to them. The series makes sure to focus on the saliva, since that is what Tsugaru needs to extend his life.
Tumblr media
Then they make it clear that the two seal their contract with this kiss and exchange, but they don’t linger on the kiss in any way. They don’t sexualize it, in fact, the way they have Tsugaru apologize to Shizuku before he enacts the kiss with Aya is quite interesting as well. It is a contract to the both of them, but the act itself is still seen as intimate, and he behaves in a generally respectful way towards the both of them. We see this earlier when he bent down and kissed Aya’s hair.
Tumblr media
There is no focus placed on their lips touching or on romanticizing that aspect. We get a quick shot of them with their lips locked to show that they made the contract. But the lingering focus is instead placed on Aya’s hair. The length of it, highlighting just how long she has been stuck like this.
I hope that there isn’t a huge focus on romance in general, not just for these two, but just between any characters. I don’t mind if there is a bit here and there, I do generally like that, but I think a lack of romantic focus would probably work best for this series. If they do go in that direction though, I do have some faith that some interesting themes might be explored along with it (rather than just otaku bait stuff).
This series has a lot of potential for me. The fact that Aya feels like she has a lot of autonomy, despite the fact that she has no body, and the fact that they aren’t doing anything weird or objectifying with her body or Shizuku’s (so far, at least) is a good sign for me. I also like, once again, that there really wasn’t anything sexual or romantic depicted in the kiss contract betwee Tsugaru and Aya. I can already tell that they will have a sort of “princess and knight” or “employer and employee/master and servant” type of dynamic, and I prefer when those remain platonic, tbh. It’s more interesting and refreshing that way (especially if it involves opposite sex characters and any kind of age gap sort of thing).
The themes of: dehumanization, exploitation, and the fallacies of immortality/having superhuman powers (or being something superhuman) are all ones I like to see explored. The unwanted experimentation aspect is quite fascinating too, and I hope we get some more interesting themes explored further into the series. Both the novel and manga are completed works, so that also gives me hope that the anime will be a full adaptation and have a satisfying ending.
The only real them that I’m a bit side-eye about is the whole “Westernization” aspect. I get it within the time period of the series itself, but this is a modern series being written for modern audiences as well, so I’m keeping an eye out for any Nihonjin-ron type stuff (essentially, Japanese nationalism views, similar to stuff like the USA’s tea party ideas of how the USA is the best country ever, never does anything wrong, and shouldn’t allow foreigners in - that sort of nationalist ideology, just with Japanese towards Japan). We are dealing with outcast characters that exist in a very dangerous situation, so I’m thinking that won’t likely happen, but you never know.
Especially since we have this framework of “Westernization has led to this Purge of demons/yokai” and “the man that appears to have murdered one of the MCs and experimented on the other MC is a Westerner as well” just...hmm. I want to see how they explore things once our gang gets to Europe though. And, I want to make it clear, I’m totally not against being critical of the West and things like colonization (or other similar aspects, which I can see may be a narrative that could be explored here through things like The Purge), I’m just hoping it won’t come with Orientalism and Nihonjin-ron ideologies attached to it. Considering that many of the Japanese portrayed in this first episode weren’t shown in a great light either though, does reassure me some that this likely won’t be the case.
Anyway, I’m really excited for this series, because it is giving me big Pandora Hearts like vibes (one of my favorite manga series), and just has a lot of potential in so many ways. Can’t wait to see where this all goes! :D

Taken at face value, the idea that Aya didn’t know mind-reading yokai existed is bit odd, given that satori (the species) lived on yokai mountain within her lifetime. That leaves a few options.
Aya was somewhere else at the time
Aya never heard about the satori
Aya never realized they could read minds
The other satori couldn’t read minds
She thought all the satori were gone
She forgor
And of course
This was just a single, non-critical line, before all of the relevant lore had been established

The Immortal & The Oni 🐉
Tumblr media
As I already dived in the waters of the Oni history, I believed that I would not talk about it in the near future, yet here we are. As the show Undead Murder Farce slowly becomes a new obsession, an while I’m gathering all the materials necessary for my future project this seemed as a great in between project. (Cause apparently, I like to put way too much stuff into my hands) The show presents us with an Oni, that was part of the Meiji purged against all the Yokai, and that now works in a “theater” [That is more like a freak show, common in all parts of the world at the time]. We soon found out that Tsugaru Shinuchi is in reality a half-Oni. We could think that he came to be born as a son of the intercourse of an Oni and a human, but it was someone that was able to transform him into an Oni.
Tumblr media
And this important information is given to us by the head of what remains of the Immortal Aya Rindo. And we also find out that Aya is an immortal, thanks to the shoot on the dark were Tsugaru asks if she is an immortal.
Tumblr media
You can read my other blog post for a more in depth explanation about the Oni, and how that change throughout the centuries, since I’m going to keep it short here. Oni are part of the Yokai culture that always played an important part in Japanese lives. They are believed to be born from the fear of natural disasters and would then evolve into being associated with almost everything that a human could have considered as bad. Aya also says that the world Oni also means “servant of evil” (Cue the Vocaloid Song). That is an omen to one of the biggest legends about Onis, and that they were born after Izanagi’s being offended after her male counterpart saw her rooting in hell. In the Edo period we start to see a more comical version of this monsters that for so long hunted the Japanese minds. In the Shuten Doji we can see an Oni that regrets its killings, becomes obsessed with sake, and loses itself in woman. (Hello there Tsugaru ancestor) In these stories we also find Onis that are humans that slowly transform into Oni’s after slowing falling into the temptation of their stronger feelings and committing crimes.
Tumblr media
Now, Onis or Oni inspired characters are a common appearance in many media, but I think the idea of Immortal was a little different. Maybe if you also read Chinese novels like Danmei you can be somewhat familiarized with similar concepts, but the whole idea can still be a little confusing. So, what exactly is an Immortal? The concept of the Immortal comes from Daoism where these beings have obtained an extended longevity after training for the control of their spirit and body. They are believed to be able to live from pure qi or dao – the foundations of the world. Living detached from the society, they obtained magical powers as an extension of the practice of transforming their qi into primordial qi. “Immortality implies the overcoming of the natural tendencies of the body and its transformation into a different kind of energetic constellation” (Kohn. 2009)
Tumblr media
There are two types of immortals: the ones that were born from Dao, representing the core of heavens and scriptures, or the ones that were humans and transformed into immortals either thanks to elixirs or various practices that accessed the Dao. (Kohn, 2009) “Immortals are physical beings (…) But while the gods of the mainstream pantheon consists of high yang energy and the dead of high yin, immortals are beyond either, having bodies of ultimate yang that makes up the base of all others forms of qi” (Kohn, 2009) It is funny to think about the reasoning behind why an Oni is the only creature that can kill an Immortal. The theory is mostly based on the five elements where there is not an element that is stronger than the other since there is always an element that can subdue the other. The same happen here, since Oni are the ones connected with hell (ying), they are the only ones able to kill an immortal that is mostly yang energy.
Tumblr media
“Oni are the Yokai with the most negative associations” (Reiner, 2010) while an immortal is mostly associated with good things. They are in opposing sides of the spectrum and so they complement each other.

It takes a village to raise a family part 13
Part 12 , next
This au is owned by @angelpuns, Aya belongs to me this is a fan work of the au! The au is really cool so go check them out!
Tw/cw: panic, fire, violence, vivid descriptions of gaining a concussion, fighting with intent to harm
I think that's all the warnings needed?
The village only had one soup kitchen, open from mid morning to an hour after sunset. Manned by one, great ino san. A small green furred yokai, well respected among his peers. The man had many customers, some annoying, some kind, some needing a good whack with a stick.
But every night he has one person, not a customer but a guard. As soon as he closes up and starts sweeping he hears it, hoof on wood knocking. He doesn't have to turn around to see who it was. "Aya"
"Aye boss." The goat yokai turns and faces away from the shop, looking amongst the dying lanterns on the two tables outside the shop.
He grabs a bowl and pours the leftover soba and sets it on the counter.
Aya glances at it once then twice before looking away from it. "I can't pay."
"Aya, eat. You work every night when I close up. It will waste anyway" he scolds before going back to sweeping.
She glances at it again before hesitating and then she grabs it, lifting it to her snout and drinking it, turning her head back.
Aya chews the noodles and sets it aside. "Thank you…it was very good.." she lets out a satisfied sigh as her head thumps against the wood.
"Oh please, it was seasoned completely wrong." Ino san rolls his eyes.
Aya shrugs and glances around slightly. "I think it was seasoned good.."
"Do you know what seasonings are?" He turns to look at her before sighing and walking to the back slightly.
Aya watches the shadows before flinching at the soft tok sound of a bowl on the counter.
Ino san looks at him. "Aya, watch me"
Aya turns her head away to watch the wooden fence. "Boss-"
"Aya" his tone switches to something stern. Aya tenses and slowly turns to look at him then at two bowls of water. "...."
"Watch" Ino San adds seasonings to the two bowls. "Watch the color"
Aya looks away. "Ahm supposed to be watchin-"
"Aya I want you to watch the color of the water" Ino San states, she turns back to watch.
Her ears slowly raise when the colors change two different colors. She couldn't tell what color they were, she just liked them.
"Try them" Ino San nudges them forward.
"can't p-"
"It's water I don't want you to pay" Ino San nudges them again.
Aya takes a sip of one and smiles, her tail wiggling slightly "i like tat one" she sets it down before trying the other. "Tis one tastes good too, like the soba ya gave me"
"See how different they taste? One is wrong and one is proper" Ino San smiles as Aya nods. Aya smiles "aye wish i could cook"
"Tell you what, you learn the difference between right and wrong tasting soba and I'll teach you how to make it, deal?" Ino San crosses his arms and smiles.
Aya lights up "really?...for real?...deal! Deal! No take backins!"
"Wouldn't dream of it, unless you burn the shop down" he lightly scolds.
Aya nods and smiles before standing guard, when Ino San finished the two went separate ways.
This was like clock work, as soon as Ino San closed she popped up, she never came during the day and never when there was a customer. On nights it was raining, on clear nights, snowy nights.
One night Ino San had his last customer leave when Aya comes running, stumbling down the pathway before running over. She slipped on some mud and hit the side of the shop with a loud thump and a shout as something definitely popped.
Ino San whips his head around "Aya!? Don't break the damn shop- what are you even-"
Aya barely dodged when a dog yokai slams his fist right where her head was, cracking the wood. Aya kicks his leg out from under him and she stands guard over the open doorway of the shop, tugging a rope and causing the wooden shutters to slam over the counter, concealing Ino San in.
Ino San grabs the stick from under the counter and runs out the door as Aya lunges at the dog yokai, the dog yokai stumbles into the table and knocks over a lantern, setting the dry summer grass on fire.
Ino San's eyes widen as he hits the fire with the stick, Aya tussling to the ground with the dog yokai. She let out a guttered growl as she slams the yokai's head to the ground. "You will NOT!"
Ino San rushes back into the shop to fetch water as two more yokai, a cat and a alligator rush Aya, the gator tumbling with her and rolling into the wooden fence.
Aya let's out a shout of pain as her hurt arm hits the wooden fence. She lifts her head only for it to be slammed back down by the Gator's claws.
She huffs and grunts as she pushes her palms against the grass, feeling the sun in her eyes as the hand squeezed her head. She felt like his hands could crush her skull.
She looks to the side and her eyes widen realizing it wasn't the sun but the entire yard on fire, the sun having had set already.
Her breathing quickens as she saw the look on Ino San's face, the fear…the panic. How the fire casted shadow across his face, the horrible mix of yellow light and green fur.
"B-bo-" she strained as she tries to talk, the force of her head being held to the boss making it hard to talk. She growls and swings, elbowing the gator in the face.
The gator winces and let's out a throated hiss before grabbing her head and slamming it against the ground, she swore she could feel her brain disconnect as the world spun. She slowly blinks once, twice. And then she became very aware of how the three yokai were gone, the soba shop on fire, the tables cooking to a nasty charcoal. She slowly sits up hearing ringing in her ears as hot tears bubbled up and the wave of pure guilt crashed over, swallowing her whole.
She slowly rose to her feet, looking around for the smaller yokai. "Boss!" She shouts as a crowd had gathered. She couldn't see who they were from the smoke and flames.
She looks around, listening to the crackling of the fire, her ears feeling singed as she backs away from the rising flames. Hot tears staining her already warm fur as she backs up. Her eyes scanning for green.
She looks at the shop and without hesitation she ran for it, stumbling on broken charred tables, wincing as the flames lap at her legs.
She grabs the doorframe to help herself slide into the shop, looking around as her eyes burn from the heat and brightness. "Boss!" She shouts, hearing the roaring of the fire, the crackling of it.
She. Starts overturning anything that wasn't already on fire, hearing cracking from above. Her ears drop as she looks up, quickly moving back as a support beam falls. She looks around and at the door, the haunting realization that she couldn't get back out.
So she did the only thing she thought was reasonable, she pulled the crate of seasonings to a corner under the counter Ino San prepared everything and curled up, laying her body over the seasonings. "I'm sorry..I'm so sorry…I'm so sorry.."
It was dawn before the fire went out, Ino San surveying the damage as the village guards usher the last stragglers away. He uses his stick to push around the broken wood, the air smelling of burnt wood and grass.
The devastation was immeasurable..but he would pick it back up and try again. This was his livelihood.
He lifts up broken bowls and pots. He looks over the burnt ingredients. Everything was burnt, everything was destroyed. He sighs heavily, not allowing himself to cry.
He closes his eyes and leans back, running his paw across his eyes before he hears a small whimper and the shift of bottles clinking together. He turns around to spot the young goat yokai, slowly lifting her head, her fur covered in black soot, his eyes red from the smoke. Her arms trembling as she pushed herself off the seasonings she had kept safe.
He stares at her, his eyes widening as he processes the sight in front of him. Aya looks at him tiredly before smiling weakly "I protected ta seasonins boss…"
Ino San slowly walks over, putting a hand to her fur and gently wipes away the soot around one eye. "Aya..that was completely reckless!" He scolds, he had every right to raise his stick to her but his gaze softens seeing her weak smile and how she holds back hiccups as tears fall down her face.
Aya slumps back over the seasonings "I tried so hard…I failed you"
Ino San sighs. "Get up Aya. We got cleaning to do."
Aya slowly looks at him with confusion before nodding. "Okay…" she didn't hesitate, this was her job.
"You did good protecting…but I did tell you if you burnt down my kitchen!" He points a finger at her. She stares before frowning "no learnin to cook?"
"Nope, you are grounded" he scolds and starts picking up the pieces of his shop. Aya stands up and with weak knees she starts picking up the heavier stuff. The morning was quiet, and the mess was plenty. But they could handle it.

Touhou 19 talk and predictions.。.:*☆
Well well well.. He finally announced it! Touhou Juuouen ~ Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost's demo will be released May 7th during the 20th Reitaisai. Predictions under Read More!
Story.
So first of all, UDoALG (one long acronym lmao) will be a direct sequel to WBaWC and UM, which is pretty cool! Looks like WBaWC will follow MoF and LoLK as one of the domino effect games.
The story is about animal spirits trying take Gensokyo over, basically? The story summary says "As a result of the markets opening up, all ownership of the ancient land has returned to nothing.", which probably means Chimata's ability affected the whole land. Gonna take a wild guess and say that the animals of Gensokyo and Animal Realm are pretty much having turf wars over certain areas of Gensokyo.
The question is, is the 'mastermind' going to be someone from the Animal Realm or someone from Gensokyo? And if it's a Gensokyan, then what kind of spirit or spirits is it going to be?
My first guess is going to be someone from the story of Momotarō, which features a dog, a monkey and a pheasant. Why? The size of the playable cast (19) makes me feel like there will be multiple masterminds this time around, and i really like the story! lol.
Second guess is going to be rogue spirits from the Animal Realm. I personally don't think any of the 4 yakuza bosses would be behind this incident, although it does sound like something Saki would do. Guessing the motive behind this incident could be that some spirits of the Animal Realm go take refuge in Gensokyo to escape the 4 yakuza clans, but eventually start taking it over due to their nature.
The Cast.
As for the cast of the game, I have no idea. Zun loves to add very unexpected characters to these kinda games. Just look at Gouyoku Ibun and AoCF. BUT I really like the idea of the cast being themed after the Chinese zodiac.
Tumblr media
We already have Seiran (rabbit), Nazrin (rat) and Aunn (dog) as confirmed playable characters, and they do fit this theme.
We also do have some matching characters for a number of the zodiac, such as:
Urumi (ox), Shou (tiger), Saki (horse), Yuuma (sheep/goat), and Kutaka (rooster).
You could argue that the Satori sisters fit monkey, Kanako fits snake and Yachie fits dragon, but in my opinion they are probably not going to be in the game because they really aren't animal spirits, except for Yachie, who i personally do not see becoming playable due to her tendency of not getting her hands dirty.
However if these characters will be playable, then we will be missing a pig themed character. Could this be a new one? who knows.
So if hypotetically 12 of the 19 playable characters are based off the Chinese zodiac, then what about the rest of them? My personal picks are:
Mamizou: She has become a series regular since her debut, and i think the game's theme and story are perfect for her. She has been very vocal about wanting a high ranking position within the hierarchy of Gensokyo and this feels like a chance for her to take action.
Aya: Another series regular and Zun seems to love writing her, so why not? + Bonus points for being an animal yokai.
Orin: She is an animal, specifically a cat yokai, and in some versions of the Chinese zodiac, there is a cat instead of the rabbit. She also has been a lot more active recently because of Detective Satori, and imo it would be cool to see how a person who can manipulate spirits would interact with animal spirits.
Megumu: She was the mastermind behind the Ability Card incident, so i feel like she would be interested in the aftermath of that. She also could fill the "dragon" role in the zodiac because of her name (龍) is an alternative read of dragon.
Nue: This is a stretch but a Nue is a chimera with many animal parts so maybe.. (<- maximum copium)
Keine: She could fill the "ox" role, and i feel like she could get involved to protect the human village, which is one of the confirmed stages in the game.
Chimata: Bc why not.
(I have some doubts about the Chinese zodiac theme because afaik it's not that commonly used in Japan, and the missing zodiacs seem kind of random, mainly the pig. BUT i would love to finally get actual snake, monkey and pig yokai.)
Other thoughts.
Personally the premise is not that exciting to me. While I love both WBaWC and UM, I feel like it's about time we move on. This game could prove me wrong and be my favorite one yet, but those are just my initial thoughts.
The gameplay seems like it could be fun, PoFV was a decent game imo and making it more like the mainline games seems like a clear improvement. I personally am a bit bored of the ability cards and i feel like they will just overcomplicate things, but once again i could be happily proven wrong.
Anyways, I hope the OST will be a good one, a good amount of it will be re-used themes but that is not a problem.
Nothing else to add, excited for May 7th!!
*edit: replaced Saki with Orin, tired brain moment*

"Wow, you're so small! I have never seen any kind of animal or yokai like you!"
Tumblr media
"You're so cute! I'm Fujiwara no Aya, but just call me Aya! Who are you? What are you? If that sort of question doesn't offend you, of course, you don't have to answer!" the girl was getting so excited, she was barely breathing before dumping all of that on the poor little fellow.

Renma’s thoughts on the people I’d say she’s met before 2:
Yukari: She's alright. Interesting, even. She questions what her origins are. The fact that she could peek at her whenever she wanted annoys her and makes her like her a bit less.
Alice: An interesting gal. A human turned magician... or yokai. Whatever. She's more interested in how she nicely uses her dolls and the way she fights. It's very refined in a way.
Remilia: The one that rules over the Scarlet Devil Mansion interests her somewhat. She's surprisingly sophisticated in some areas. She questions what an average day in the life of Remilia is like... aside from being nocturnal.
Yuyuko: She can't handle her. She's a fine lady, but she can never expect what she's going to say. No matter what, she'll be surprised in at least one conversation with her. Not to mention how much she likes food. She also does, but geez... Even she can't eat that much...
Yuuka: She hasn't talked to her much, but she does admire her ability to tend to so many flowers. Her anger face doesn't scare her that bad.
Hatate: It's a less annoying Aya. She'd tease her more if Aya didn't already leave a bad taste in her mouth when it comes to the tengu.
Sumireko: She comes to her a bunch to ask about the Outside World, since she's the one who'd have more knowledge about the times now than Sanae.
Seija: She's hardly seen her much, so she doesn't hold much thoughts on her. All she can say is they're... hardly acquainted?
Mima: Who?
