i already knew in book 2 that becca was going to come back in book four and blow up the arkadian, and becca always intended to do precisely that as well.. so i had becca mock bones to her face in a way nobody was likely to connect.

i had so much of the series planned out from the time i wrapped book one that i was able to include a lot of easter egg moments that only click on a reread..

like raven being informed they're working a commander case and realizing how screwed she is...

raven started working with becca when--and partially because--clarke and lexa stopped working together the previous year. given that clarke and lexa had only recently begun working together again, and becca drops a body directly in front of raven almost immediately?

raven definitely knew she was in trouble the minute she heard the commanders name, poor little bug; she came full circle in a sadly sisyphusian way {*losing my religion starts playing*}

so if there were gay writers doing it how would the scene play out differently? Like what makeitgay did or something else? I wanted a moment where they really talk and learn about one another and we never got that

It's not just whether the writing team has any representation, it's also time and what is prioritized for the story. "Clexa" was not a priority. Moving on from Clexa to get to the crappy AI story element was (and from there, we get JR building one of the most egregious cases of malicious queerbaiting ever, but I've done that to death, so to speak).

What else could they have done? So, if they weren't playing to cheap seats, being obnoxiously pandering to straight audiences, trying to make this relationship palatable (and "sexy" by "feminizing" her out of her Grounder persona), maybe it could have gone like this:

I would have had Clarke visiting Lexa after the fight, after people were done cleaning up and celebrating. Clarke (knocking, for once), showing up at Lexa's door to check on her, just to know she was ok and what would happen next. Lexa, tired, removing her armor, bruised, sore, not really interested in conversation at the moment, shy because it's Clarke and why would Clarke care, Clarke got her way, again, her people will be safe, as she promised, Lexa thinks that's all Clarke is there for, and repeats the promise--but that isn't what Clarke is there for.

She sees Lexa finch as she removes her gloves and the blood drying on her palm, maybe shoos away the handmaiden that brought in bandages and hot water, forces Lexa to sit while she tends to her, and asks her, casually, how is it she has black blood? And don't just say "the first Commander, blah blah blah, this is me and I will find out."

I mean, there's an elephant in the room and they never got to it.

What *is* Lexa?

As she's tended to, Lexa explains a little, hedges, then sees Clarke looking at her like, Bullshit, tell me, and she opens up: asks her if she knew of a 13th station. Had she ever heard the name Becca Franco? Quiet, Clarke nods. This is going somewhere. Lexa explains how she gave them black blood "for radiation, right?" But Clarke is a little wrong. She shows her the scar on the back of her neck. Maybe there's a little pulse of light under her skin.

Suddenly, the world gets a little bigger.

Because if Lexa is connected to what is, essentially, a database from Becca on down, she should know all that they knew. Making her "Commander" persona also a bit of an act. She's trying to re-civilize her world and is forced to do it uphill, in the rain, with no help.

And that's something Clarke might find WILD.

Clarke finishes quickly and makes to leave, she has to think, and Lexa, resigned that this is all there ever will be, that she will always give even though nothing is ever returned (maybe even wondering if Gustus was right and allying with the sky people will be the death of her), wishes her a weary goodnight without looking up and Clarke stops at the door, realizing, turns to see Lexa, head bowed, looking at her bandaged hand and she stops and walks back, touching Lexa's hair, making her look up and she says, sincerely, Thank you.

Maybe on her way back to her room, Clarke passes Aden and the other Nightbloods, looking relieved and anxious, wanting to see their Heda, and she tells them Lexa is tired and they should visit her tomorrow. The youngest looks at Clarke and asks her if she would stay with them then, maybe tell them a story, if Heda is too tired.

The world keeps getting bigger.

"What kind of stories does she tell you?"

They all smile.

"About you."

And the questions start. And Clarke can see, really see, they're a family.

"Did you really live in the sky?"

"Nobody can live in the sky, stupid."

"Birds do."

"They can fly. They live in nests. In trees."

"Did you live in a nest, Wanheda?"

"There's no trees in the sky."

"She's not a bird, stupid."

"Angels live in the sky."

"Angels live in heaven and they have wings. Do you see wings?"

"Maybe she lost them in the mountain. Did the mountain take your wings, Wanheda?"

And Clarke is overwhelmed because she did live in the sky, in a kind of nest, and while she never had wings, the mountain took something from her and she doesn't know how to get it back and she doesn't want the kids to see she's crying.

"I'm sure Heda will find you some. She knows everything."

Then another voice from behind.

"She's not that clever."

And they turn, and there's Lexa, in a dark coat, her braids out, looking like she's about to chastise them for bothering Clarke.

"Besides, if she had wings, she might fly home."

The youngest tugs on Lexa's coat and she is picked up.

"Maybe she could take us there."

"Is it so terrible here?"

Clarke wipes at her tears and smiles.

"I think I'd rather stay, if that's okay with you."

The children cheer and gather around the two women, who can't stop looking at one another, with a halo of smiles.

Chapter 8: Autumn Killed the Summer with the Softest Kiss

Lexa takes a deep breath. Lets it expand in her lungs and then holds it. The sun presses gold and red on her eyelids but she imagines if it were winter. How the air inside her might freeze over one snowflake at a time, like a bubble some carefree child let drift free in the cold.

Warmth on her face and that sharp, bitter bite of ice in her chest. It certainly makes sense.

"Missed what?"

Lexa opens her eyes. She's sitting in a quiet office. A few dust particles float in the muted golden light leaking in through the window blinds. The carpet is a soft green and the chair she sits in, legs drawn up because she's never been able to sit like a normal person for long, is just uncomfortable enough to remind her not to grow too comfortable here.

As if she'd forget.

Her first impression of her new therapist, Becca Franco, was that she had intelligent eyes. Not necessarily kind eyes, but intelligent, though they're not unkind, either. Lexa's not quite sure what to think about it all yet. There's always going to be this shadowy part of her that squirms in its hiding spot, burrowed somewhere deep inside, at the prospect of even considering this. Talking to a stranger about her feelings. She's tried this before. Several times, actually, when she was a child. It never went much further than Lexa, clammed up and silent, eventually offered crayons and coloring pages.

But now here she is. Her wife is dead and her new therapist is staring expectantly at her, cozy in the awkward silence permeating the air. Meanwhile Lexa drowns in it.

"What is on this!" She yelled, the Grounder recognized the power that radiated off of her; the power of a Commander. The grounder didn't speak he just looked her directly in the eyes and even though he knew that was dangerous. Clarke, growing angrier and desperate, picked up a different knife and stabbed the grounder in the hand, "Answer me!" She yelled, removing the knife and placing it to his neck.

"Clarke, stop," Bellamy panicked, "there are some lines that if we cross them then we may never return."

"Āza, he's seizing!" Raven yells from down the bottom floor.

Clarke glares at Bellamy dropping the knife, and walking to the ladder, "there are some lines worth crossing if it saves my people."

100 hundred delinquents are sent to the ground after being in a space station for 97 years. Clarke Griffin is a Night Blood with the second flame of humanity but what happens when she finds out she is not the only protector of humanity, that Becca Franco did indeed survive? 1900s : Mount Weather Emergency Operations center is constructed in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the United States as a military bunker.

2051 : Scientist Dr. Becca Franco, created an AI A.L.I.E. (Applied Lucent Intelligence Emulator), but turns out the AI is a eugenicist and subscribes to the thought of overpopulation, and that the greatest threats to humans (the mystery she was created to solve) is humans. Franco shuts that shit down. She retreats to her personal space station, Polaris, to continue studying, where she created a new A.I. dubbed A.L.I.E. 2 (and only compatible with a special blood compound she also created, called nightblood)

2052 : A.L.I.E. launches a worldwide nuclear strike to “save the human race” due to its calculation that there were “too many people.” She set out to solve the world’s overpopulation problem by eliminating enough of the human race to save the rest.

2054 : October 1st, the first Unity Day. 13 separate space stations from 12 separate nations (plus Franco’s) are trying to ride out the apocalypse that’s happening on the surface. The 12 stations are way too sus about Franco and how she made ALIE and Alpha Station shoots Polaris down. With her fall, the remaining 12 join as one and create The Ark - the supposed last bastion of human survivors.

PYSCH. Franco didn’t die with the rest of her station, she jettisoned in a little pod, shot up with Nightblood and having shoved ALIE 2.0 into the back of her neck at her brain stem (ALIE 2 being an implanted AI to better understand human emotions, unlike its predecessor who was a stand alone AI). She crashes to earth with the rest of the superhuman blood- i mean, nightblood, and tries to help the ppl who survived on the surface (everyone in space thought everyone else died). Her story becomes the legend of the First Commander and her technology becomes the foundation of the Grounder society, with the Nighblood passing through Grounders. A.L.I.E. 2.0 becomes "The Flame," a chip passed down and implanted through the generations of Grounder leaders called Commanders, which contains the memories of all Commanders before them.

2100-2149 : On the Ark, Abigail Griffin, Marcus Kane, Thelonius Jaha, Charles Pike are born and live in humanity's post-apocalyptic society in space.

The generation below them also grows up on the Ark, including Clarke Griffin, Bellamy and Octavia Blake, Monty Green, Raven Reyes, John Murphy, Jasper Jordan, Harper McIntyre, Finn Collins, Nathan Miller, and Wells Jaha, all of whom will make their way to Earth at the start of the series with the Delinquents.

On Earth, the Grounders become the descendants of Earth's human survivors, developing new languages, faith, and customs foreign to the pre-apocalypse world. 12 Grounder Clans emerge, as well as societies of nomadic grounders.

OK done with the condensed and relevant version of that article, now to the important plot.

Because they’re all part of the Elite Alpha Station, they don’t get a lot of acceptance from the others that are essentially considered lower class by default, so they tend to band together very clichishly 

There are limited resources on the Ark, obvs, so shit like one kid only rule, food rations, recycling of  goods (like clothes), etc. That also means that all “crimes” are super detrimental and get you floated… into space. Death penalty style. Unless you’re a minor, then you get incarcerated until you’re 18 when you go through a revision and maybe you’re let back into populace or maybe they float you anyway

So

Jake finds out the Ark’s oxygen scrubbing system is in catastrophic failure. Like not just a little glitch but full failing. And there’s nowhere to run in space, so he tells Abby and suggests they tell everyone so everyone can be in on the decision of what to do moving forward. Abby is hesitant, and they bring it up to Jaha (Thelonius is Jaha, Wells is Wells) who immediately shoots it down - mass panic and all that. Jake still presses that they should Let The People Know and while that who whatever is going down, Clarke hears her dad talking about it. She stresses over it, confides in Wells about it, and then her father is floated for treason (recording a video he intended to release to the public about the failure). She is 17 and so they toss her in the Skybox (juvy) but gen pop gets visitation with the outside, so they put her in solitary for the rest of her sentence so she can’t blab.

Just before her 18th (revision hearing anticipated), guards bust in and haul her out. She flips, thinking they’re floating her early, probably starting in the Skybox to save on oxygen. But no, she sees her mom for a sec and she explains they’re sending down the kids in a dropship to test if earth is safe. It’s not projected to be for another few generations, but clarke knows there’s a time crunch. she knows the real why. They zap her and she wakes up on the dropship, descent already starting, and there’s… Wells? Goody Two Shoes Chancellor’s Son? the only other person she told about her dad. wtf yanno. He confesses to her he got arrested to get sent down on the Dropship with her. ok but didn’t you sell out her dad? Question Mark?

They have monitoring cuffs to relay their vitals to the Ark to see just how toxic earth is now. There’s supposed to be a radio but it gets fried in the rough landing. They go out and WOW EARTH! But they were supposed to be dropped on Mount Weather, uninhabited maybe, but should still be stocked with pre-war goodies. they’re also horny, stupid, delinquent teens so they just start dicking around and taking off their wristbands (fuck the Ark, they don’t get to know about us, they sent us on a suicide mission) and clarke is like. Hello? The Ark is dying. Pissbaby (Bellamy Blake) is like so what. Whatever the hell we want. And clarke is like uhhhhh do you know farming like the aptly named Farm Station? Do you know medicine? Tell me what you do know. Oh right, you were training to be a guard to keep your sister (a second child *gasp*) safe, you both got caught, she was iced, you got demoted to a janitor, and then the head of the guards was like “shoot jaha and i’ll get you on that dropship” and so you did. What a Big Bad Boy. boring. But he knows how to appeal to the rest of the delinquents, and so he’s effective.

So they try to actually survive (food, water, shelter, under clarke’s direction mostly) because maybe they don’t hate everyone on the Ark. clarke gets some of them to head out towards mount weather, just to see what they could benefit from. but on their way there, one of them gets speared. Holy shit there are people living on the ground! And then the rest of them get their ass in gear and try to actually survive. people start dying, surprise surprise, they get panicked by the threat of people already established on the land they were told was their birthright and by the fact that they’re woefully underprepared. also Super Charming Space Walker Finn is hitting on clarke and she’s kinda into it because wow. hormones. there’s also this acid fog that rolls through sometimes and boils the skin off their bones. 

One time, she’s running from it with Finn and Wells and they find an old, mostly buried car to hide out in.

Canonically, she hops in with them to flirt and brood and drink.

Canonically, she goes with them back to the rest of the delinquents and the Dropship.

Canonically, she is Skaikru (the Grounder word for People Of The Sky) and is treated as such.

But also like. Canon is garbage anyway

And instead, we were gifted with KL Morgan

And KL Morgan gifted us with Destruction

becca foreshadowed her attack on the arkadian when lexa first met her; just to taunt her. lexa and clarke initially didn't know who the commander was, but becca had known who they both were, ever since they worked the original calliope cadogan case. becca always had a plan, and it was always to blow up the arkadian.

“weikru”  originally referred to group of people  that lived to the west of the coalition  prior to praimfaya. in the eden timeline, it refers to members of that population that  survived in the colorado bunker.

weikru – “western people.” west-crew. alternatively weigedakru (west-gather-crew; people who gather in the west). they get a “kru” name because they are not a faceless force like the mountain, they are a visible group of people.

they are considered “grounders”  because their ancestors survived on earth rather than in space after the first apocalypse (just like the echo, lexa, emori, etc).

they do not refer to themselves as weikru.  that is a name that the coalition made for them (similar to how arkers refer to the twelve clans as “grounders”). self-appointed name tbd.

they were  more technologically advanced  than the coalition, but hid that to avoid being compared to the mountain men and to conserve resources.

the population was over 1000+ prior to praimfaya but was  reduced to several hundred during the apocalypse.

trading with the coalition slowed  during the internal conflicts of seasons one-two and  basically stopped  after lexa’s death. trading was then done on an individual basis without connection to the clans’ now-turbulent central government. their main trading partners were ingranronakru, the western-most clan in the coalition.

they have  very few nightbloods  in their population. the coalition gained access to nightblood after becca franco (“bekka pramheda”) injected herself with the solution and started distributing it amongst the eastern apocalypse survivors. nightblood was only introduced to the western clans through intermingling with the coalition and subsequent reproduction. because nightblood is a recessive genetic trait, it is unlikely to take over the population  –  OR  –  they are  all nightbloods  because they figured out how to recreate becca’s nightblood serum and now administer it to all their people... but then why did they need the bunker? comfort and then resources (since their land is a wasteland)?
