behind the story // girl in the flame & hope in the horror
becca foreshadowed her attack on the arkadian when lexa first met her; just to taunt her. lexa and clarke initially didn't know who the commander was, but becca had known who they both were, ever since they worked the original calliope cadogan case. becca always had a plan, and it was always to blow up the arkadian.

So you're mildly interested in The 100 but it's garbage and you just want the goods of fanfic?
said no one ever. but here we go
Cheater article
1900s : Mount Weather Emergency Operations center is constructed in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the United States as a military bunker.
2051 : Scientist Dr. Becca Franco, created an AI A.L.I.E. (Applied Lucent Intelligence Emulator), but turns out the AI is a eugenicist and subscribes to the thought of overpopulation, and that the greatest threats to humans (the mystery she was created to solve) is humans. Franco shuts that shit down. She retreats to her personal space station, Polaris, to continue studying, where she created a new A.I. dubbed A.L.I.E. 2 (and only compatible with a special blood compound she also created, called nightblood)
2052 : A.L.I.E. launches a worldwide nuclear strike to “save the human race” due to its calculation that there were “too many people.” She set out to solve the world’s overpopulation problem by eliminating enough of the human race to save the rest.
2054 : October 1st, the first Unity Day. 13 separate space stations from 12 separate nations (plus Franco’s) are trying to ride out the apocalypse that’s happening on the surface. The 12 stations are way too sus about Franco and how she made ALIE and Alpha Station shoots Polaris down. With her fall, the remaining 12 join as one and create The Ark - the supposed last bastion of human survivors.
PYSCH. Franco didn’t die with the rest of her station, she jettisoned in a little pod, shot up with Nightblood and having shoved ALIE 2.0 into the back of her neck at her brain stem (ALIE 2 being an implanted AI to better understand human emotions, unlike its predecessor who was a stand alone AI). She crashes to earth with the rest of the superhuman blood- i mean, nightblood, and tries to help the ppl who survived on the surface (everyone in space thought everyone else died). Her story becomes the legend of the First Commander and her technology becomes the foundation of the Grounder society, with the Nighblood passing through Grounders. A.L.I.E. 2.0 becomes "The Flame," a chip passed down and implanted through the generations of Grounder leaders called Commanders, which contains the memories of all Commanders before them.
2100-2149 : On the Ark, Abigail Griffin, Marcus Kane, Thelonius Jaha, Charles Pike are born and live in humanity's post-apocalyptic society in space.
The generation below them also grows up on the Ark, including Clarke Griffin, Bellamy and Octavia Blake, Monty Green, Raven Reyes, John Murphy, Jasper Jordan, Harper McIntyre, Finn Collins, Nathan Miller, and Wells Jaha, all of whom will make their way to Earth at the start of the series with the Delinquents.
On Earth, the Grounders become the descendants of Earth's human survivors, developing new languages, faith, and customs foreign to the pre-apocalypse world. 12 Grounder Clans emerge, as well as societies of nomadic grounders.
OK done with the condensed and relevant version of that article, now to the important plot.
Clarke is MC
Mom: Abby, head of medical clinic
Dad: Jake, head of engineering or smn
Chancellor: Thelonius Jaha
Wells: Chancellor’s son, clarke’s bff
Because they’re all part of the Elite Alpha Station, they don’t get a lot of acceptance from the others that are essentially considered lower class by default, so they tend to band together very clichishly
There are limited resources on the Ark, obvs, so shit like one kid only rule, food rations, recycling of  goods (like clothes), etc. That also means that all “crimes” are super detrimental and get you floated… into space. Death penalty style. Unless you’re a minor, then you get incarcerated until you’re 18 when you go through a revision and maybe you’re let back into populace or maybe they float you anyway
So
Jake finds out the Ark’s oxygen scrubbing system is in catastrophic failure. Like not just a little glitch but full failing. And there’s nowhere to run in space, so he tells Abby and suggests they tell everyone so everyone can be in on the decision of what to do moving forward. Abby is hesitant, and they bring it up to Jaha (Thelonius is Jaha, Wells is Wells) who immediately shoots it down - mass panic and all that. Jake still presses that they should Let The People Know and while that who whatever is going down, Clarke hears her dad talking about it. She stresses over it, confides in Wells about it, and then her father is floated for treason (recording a video he intended to release to the public about the failure). She is 17 and so they toss her in the Skybox (juvy) but gen pop gets visitation with the outside, so they put her in solitary for the rest of her sentence so she can’t blab.
Just before her 18th (revision hearing anticipated), guards bust in and haul her out. She flips, thinking they’re floating her early, probably starting in the Skybox to save on oxygen. But no, she sees her mom for a sec and she explains they’re sending down the kids in a dropship to test if earth is safe. It’s not projected to be for another few generations, but clarke knows there’s a time crunch. she knows the real why. They zap her and she wakes up on the dropship, descent already starting, and there’s… Wells? Goody Two Shoes Chancellor’s Son? the only other person she told about her dad. wtf yanno. He confesses to her he got arrested to get sent down on the Dropship with her. ok but didn’t you sell out her dad? Question Mark?
They have monitoring cuffs to relay their vitals to the Ark to see just how toxic earth is now. There’s supposed to be a radio but it gets fried in the rough landing. They go out and WOW EARTH! But they were supposed to be dropped on Mount Weather, uninhabited maybe, but should still be stocked with pre-war goodies. they’re also horny, stupid, delinquent teens so they just start dicking around and taking off their wristbands (fuck the Ark, they don’t get to know about us, they sent us on a suicide mission) and clarke is like. Hello? The Ark is dying. Pissbaby (Bellamy Blake) is like so what. Whatever the hell we want. And clarke is like uhhhhh do you know farming like the aptly named Farm Station? Do you know medicine? Tell me what you do know. Oh right, you were training to be a guard to keep your sister (a second child *gasp*) safe, you both got caught, she was iced, you got demoted to a janitor, and then the head of the guards was like “shoot jaha and i’ll get you on that dropship” and so you did. What a Big Bad Boy. boring. But he knows how to appeal to the rest of the delinquents, and so he’s effective.
So they try to actually survive (food, water, shelter, under clarke’s direction mostly) because maybe they don’t hate everyone on the Ark. clarke gets some of them to head out towards mount weather, just to see what they could benefit from. but on their way there, one of them gets speared. Holy shit there are people living on the ground! And then the rest of them get their ass in gear and try to actually survive. people start dying, surprise surprise, they get panicked by the threat of people already established on the land they were told was their birthright and by the fact that they’re woefully underprepared. also Super Charming Space Walker Finn is hitting on clarke and she’s kinda into it because wow. hormones. there’s also this acid fog that rolls through sometimes and boils the skin off their bones.
One time, she’s running from it with Finn and Wells and they find an old, mostly buried car to hide out in.
Canonically, she hops in with them to flirt and brood and drink.
Canonically, she goes with them back to the rest of the delinquents and the Dropship.
Canonically, she is Skaikru (the Grounder word for People Of The Sky) and is treated as such.
But also like. Canon is garbage anyway
And instead, we were gifted with KL Morgan
And KL Morgan gifted us with Destruction
And then for more canonical aus, we have KL Morgan (again ofc) with The Lay of the Looking Glass Land - it does take up further into canon so this blurb wouldn't be sufficient

Becca Franco, confirmed smartest human in the history of the species, was terrified of transcendence.
Becca Franco, confirmed smartest human in the history of the species, abandoned ALIE 1 for her city of light ‘solution’ in favor of ALIE 2 who’d help the host learn and grow and be better so they would do better as a species without losing their minds to a collective consciousness.
Becca Franco, confirmed smartest human in the history of the species, tried to destroy the anomaly stone so that they’d never go through the Judge/Test/Transcendence bullshit which is ALIE 1 with prettier lights.

I know there are people who criticize others for liking characters like Kuvira, Azula, Zuko, Jet etc. and yes I do understand that they have done a lot of bad things. But the thing is, they are fictional characters. They are villains. They are supposed to be bad (idk about Jet tho, people seem to hate him for no reason sometimes).
So here is a list of characters who have done bad things but people don’t get criticized for liking them. I have explained some of them, not all. Some of these characters are from shows or movies I haven’t even watched, but I know they aren’t good.
DISCLAIMER: I do not support bullying others for liking certain characters. You are free to like the character you want, but I also expect you to recognize the things they have done. If you bully someone for liking a certain character, you are scum. Ok thank you, now for the list
Octavia Blake (Cannibal, burned down the hydrofarm to get people march to the Shallow Valley)
Bellamy Blake (Murdered hundreds of Trikru soldier while they were sleeping, left his sister to die)
Lexa kom Trikru (Betrayed Clarke at the end of season 2, almost killed Raven and was ready to let Octavia etc die in Tondc)
Echo/Ash kom Azgeda (Killed multiple participants in the last conclave so that her people would win, almost killed Octavia (by accident tho))
Clarke Griffin (Has killed a lot of people, killed Bellamy because of a notebook she didn’t even take with her)
Raven Reyes (Uh those people who died inside the generator in season seven. Yeah that’s on her)
Finn Collins (Killed a village of grounders because he thought they had Clarke)
John Murphy (He’s a thief, has hurt people to survive)
Emori (A thief, lied her way out of testing the radiation and an innocent man died instead of her)
King Roan
Charmaine Diyoza (A terrorist, forcefully took over the Shallow Valley, kept Abby and Kane “prisoners” for her own good)
Abby Griffin (A cannibal, outed her husband to the council and got him excecuted, electrocuted Raven)
Lincoln kom Trikru
Thelonious Jaha (Do I have to explain this one)
Becca Franco/ALIE
Josephine Lightbourn
Damon Salvatore (Rapist, murderer, liar, manipulator)
Stefan Salvatore
Klaus Mikaelson (Honestly, I don’t need to explain this one either)
Elijah Mikaelson
Rebecca Mikaelson
Honestly the whole Mikaelson family
Katherine Pierce (Did anything to survive, hurting people on the way of doing so)
Loki
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
Kylo Ren
Bucky Barnes
Catra
Hordak
(Entrapta. In closed captions because I really understand why she kinda switched sides but anyway)
Scorpia
Double Trouble
Varrick and Zhu Li
Billy Hargrove
Derek Hale
Draco Malfoy (Racist, a death eater)
Actually the entire Malfoy family
Bellatrix Lestrange
Sirius Black
Severus Snape (Outed Lupin, a death eater, literally stalked Lily, he wasn’t in love with her, he was just obbsessed, bullied literal children)
Dumbledore
Tate Langdon (He’s a... School shooter. That should be enough)
Honestly I don’t remember anything about American Horror Story but the show has a lot of questionable characters that a lot of people love so basically all of the characters from the show should be on this list
Allison Dilaurentis
Mona Vandervaal
Daryl Dixon
Negan (I shouldn’t have to explain this one)
Cersei Lannister
Jaime Lannister
Victor Strand
Azula, Zuko, Kuvira, Jet etc fans don’t deserve to get hated on when there are characters like the ones listed above who people can love without being criticized. I don’t care if the characters listed above are “misunderstood”, “hurt”, “traumatised” or whatever, so are Azula, Zuko, Kuvira and Jet. You don’t get to pick and choose who you are going to hate and then love one of the characters listed above.
Feel free to add more characters.

I know you're not posting desperate measures, but I have questions about y/n + the francos!! How old was y/n when her mum died? What about her dad? Do you have any headcanons about them that you haven't revealed yet? Any songs or quotes that remind you of them? I'm so sorry for the spam!!
You’re good! Tbh, I miss posting it. I was actually gonna post the latest chapter when the news about Bob broke and I was very upset. But I’m happy to answer any questions you have!!!
How old was y/n when her mom died?
Her mom had been stealing for a long time, but she got caught around the time Raven and Y/N were entering high school. So, Y/N was probably around thirteen or fourteen when her mom got floated and she was adopted by Marcus.
What about her dad?
Oooooh, okay. So her dad was somebody from Factory Station. He actually knew Murphy’s dad. He doesn’t play that big of a role in the plot, but he was floated for dealing drugs in the prisons. He was a janitor, so he was able to sneak them in. Y/N was a year old when he got floated and they moved in with Raven and her mom.
Headcanons I haven’t revealed yet?
Becca was creating Alie 2.0 specifically to be passed down through her bloodline and that’s the reason so many Commanders die horribly.
Leah (y/n’s mom) was incredibly well-respected on the Ark and was actually friends with Abby before she married Jake.
Kane and Leah actually had a relationship years before Y/N came into the picture, and that’s one of the main reasons he adopts her.
Kane was also the one who pressed the button to float Leah.
Y/N used to build stuff to try and make her mother’s life easier. Like a machine that can peel fruit by itself, a way to toast bread without burning it etc.
Leah used to tell Y/N Grimm’s fairytales before she tucked her into bed.
If she couldn’t remember any, she would read Y/N instruction manuals from her job on the Ark.
For years, Y/N dreamt of her mother’s death, to the point where she would sleepwalk to the airlock where she was floated.
She has one reminder of her dad, a birthmark on her inner thigh that matched her dad’s on his shoulder.
For the first sixteen years of her life, she avoided factory station at all cost.
The mantra Love is Weakness, was something Y/N heard Leah utter to herself over and over after her dad got floated.
Songs or Quotes that remind me of them?
Songs:
My love, My life: Meryl Streep, Lily James, Amanda Seyfried
See You Again: Charlie Puth
Soon You’ll Get Better: Taylor Swift
Miss You: Mat Kearney
Life: Sleeping At Least
Daughter: Sleeping At Least
Show Yourself: Frozen 2
Quotes:
“you have been given a choice. evolve or repeat”
“loving any of us is a death sentence isn’t it?”
“I feel my ancestors in my blood. I am a body of people that are asking not to be forgotten”
“my mother taught me everything, except how to live without her”
“create. destroy. rebuild.”
“what is a legacy? it’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.”
Ask me questions!

um your gifset i just saw with everyone at bardo talking about clarke and i just- i've seen a lot of people talking about why it's clarke specifically that they want. i mean she is pretty much the leader and stuff but i was thinking about what clarke has that the others don't. at first i thought nightblood, but then i realized that didn't make much sense. but the scene in your gifset about the *key* made me think- do you think it's the Flame? idk if others have thought of this already or not but
I think it’s... kinda the Flame. And by that, I mean I don’t think it’s the piece of dead technology currently buried under a tree. I do think it’s the knowledge that was contained within it. But I also think that Clarke herself is crucial to this process. Let me walk you through my logic here.
The ancestors of the Disciples of a Greater Truth were “delivered” to Bardo by the Anomaly Stones from Earth by a “Shepherd.” All signs currently point to Cadogan—if not being the Shepherd himself—being extremely involved in that particular endeavor. Cadogan, for those who don’t remember, was the leader of the Second Dawn cult before Apocalypse One that built the bunker that Wonkru hunkered down in. Cadogan also, coincidentally, is the person that killed Becca Franco (known and revered as the first Commander by the grounders) by burning her at the stake. I fully expect this to be what ties the backdoor pilot for the prequel into our current story.
Becca, you may recall, is the mind behind the following, in approximate order of creation:
Nightblood (which allows the rest of her technology to safely interact with the human body by metabolizing radiation faster)
The Memory Drives (created as a sort of human USB memory backup system not unlike a black box in an airplane, as described by Gabriel)
ALIE 1.0 (the AI that launched the nuclear missiles that ended the world the first time)
ALIE 2.0 (the Flame / AI designed to interface with human consciousness to help save humanity)
It’s also worth noting that Becca was heavily associated with the Eligius Corporation, and likely played a role in choosing the planets that Eligius III left to scout, and, if that’s the case, likely knew about the wormhole.
It’s not clear when, exactly, the ancestors of the Disciples left Earth and arrived on Bardo in relation to the first apocalypse / Becca’s murder. But there is the fact that Cadogan and Becca did not seem to be on the best of terms, to put it lightly, and if Cadogan is the Shepherd, they’re both considered god-like figures by their respective followings.
Now for Clarke.
There are some minor things that have been thrown around this season that I think build this theory of mine up, so let me lay those out and then I’ll share my conclusion.
Gaia claimed that there has never been an ex-commander before, so they can’t have any idea what Madi will be experiencing now that the Flame is gone.
Note: There are very few people in-universe that know that Clarke once had the Flame in her head, and it makes sense that that information wouldn’t be spread around. Gaia is not one of the people in-the-know.
Madi, who previously had the Flame in her head and now does not, is drawing memories that are not her own.
Whether this is a conscious decision or not (I’m leaning toward not, since Madi claimed she was bored and didn’t know why she drew the things she did), this indicates that when the Flame is removed, residual knowledge obtained from it remains.
If this is true for Madi, it’s likely also true for Clarke, whether she is aware of it or not.
Clarke retained Josephine’s knowledge of how to ride a motorcycle.
This would further indicate that, yes, memory/knowledge retention is something that Clarke is also experiencing when we consider that Josephine’s consciousness is gone entirely.
It’s reasonable to assume that the effect of this retention is similar in both the modified memory drives and the Flame since they were both created by the same person.
Conclusion: The Disciples want the knowledge from the Flame that Clarke has retained, and their priorities may or may not lie with Becca.
And at this point it should be brought up that this theory has not yet specified why it would need to be Clarke, specifically, and not, say, Madi. I’ve got some ideas for that, too.
The Disciples are not the grounders. They’re not only aware of technology, they’re proficient in it. If it was the Flame they were after, or even just the information, they wouldn’t be calling Clarke the key. They know better than that.
Here’s the thing about memories: they’re subjective. This seems like a really obvious thing to say, but when it comes to the Disciples, we need to think about what that means. They have MCAP machines. Memory Capture. What they see in these machines (in terms of the story and not necessarily the clips we see—send me a different ask for that) are events from a single perspective that are colored by the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of the person that remembers them.
It’s incredibly poetic to me that the Disciples of a Greater Truth would rely on memories as they seem to. Not because memories are a lie, but because they’re never complete. You can’t learn the whole truth about anything by asking only one person. In the wise words of one Josephine Lightbourne, “Everyone’s the hero of their own story.”
But. That’s not necessarily true, now, is it? Clarke told her story to Madi. And Clarke doesn’t think she's the hero. It wasn’t until Madi had the Flame and interpreted (what I assume were) Clarke’s memories of what she’d done that Madi pointed out, “all along, it was you.”
So. Why Clarke?
The ring of fire in season one. Mount Weather in season two. The City of Light in season three. Those solutions were extreme, and they resulted in great loss of life, yes. But those solutions saved the people that Clarke cares about (after a season long arc of trying to do literally anything other than the extreme option). They were also all Clarke’s idea.
Clarke is intelligent, and creative, and will not stop trying to save her people, to the expense of herself. And that’s all without direct access to information from the Flame.
Clarke’s interpretation of Becca’s memories would be invaluable information in whatever this “last war” is.
Clarke is also the only person on the show that has in some way, shape, or form, interacted with all of Becca’s known tech, which I find Interesting™, but may or may not relate.
And at this point I’m thinking that the “last war” is some symbolism of [Loyalty vs. Faith vs. Truth] in a (Sheidheda & Wonkru) vs. (Disciples & Sanctumites) vs. (Eligius & Children of Gabriel & The Main Characters) or some mixture of the groups. But I digress.
tl;dr — it’s the flame’s info in clarke’s head, but clarke’s thoughts make it spicy™
