Whumpee: Sheung Sing played by Benjamin Yuen

Synopsis: The Defected can be summarized as a power play in the police force among the high-ranking officers which results in their subordinates being made as pawns and sacrificial lambs. If the lower-ranking officers fight back, they will be transferred out or put in cold storage as punishment.

Episode 1: Nothing

Episode 5: concerned for someone, suddenly gets shot in the head, head flicks back, falls on his back, eyes open, unconscious, concerned for him, goes in a ambulance, has a bandage around his head, they use a respirator, goes through brain surgery to get the bullet out, concern for him x4, the doctors managed to get the bullet out

Episode 6: (Flashback: He was shot in the head due to a someone firing a gun at someone else and they missed), conscious in the hospital bed, still has a bandage around his head and has no bone on the side of his head due to surgery, his boss keeps trying to get him to talk but he just got out of surgery, doctor says he cant talk right now, his boss taps his injured head (again he just got out of surgery *this scene makes me mad*), he loses consciousness, and the medical equipment goes off, his friend is concerned for him, unconscious still, wakes up, concern for him x4, attempts to speak but cant, he tries to say,"Im sorry" to his daughter, his boss comes in again, his family and friend try to defend him-- and say that he needs rest, the boss slaps his cheek trying to get him to speak

Episode 7: Laying in a hospital bed, still has a bandage on his head, doctor says he's having trouble sleeping, hes able to speak now, his friend is pushing him on a wheel chair outside, pushes himself to walk even though the doctor said not to, stand up again but suddenly becomes dizzy, his friend sits him back down

Episode 8: the doctor talks about how he's experiencing headaches is due to the lack of rest, attempts to walk even though he received a warning, falls to the ground and has a seizure, concern for him, gets angry from not healing fast enough, gets a bad headaches, wife is concerned for him, clenching his fist, panting, telling his wife that his head hurts constantly, lies to the doctor claiming he wants to see his daughter for her birthday but he is secretly going undercover, starts panting and sweating, his headache is back, concern for him, gets help to walk, asked is he felt better after throwing up, still not feeling good, twitches a little, shaking, seems feverish, takes pills, breathing heavy

Episode 9: Helped to walk, still seems feverish, wife comments on how he's so warm, concern x2, keeps trying to tell them he's fine, coughs suddenly, coughs up some blood, starts to lose his balance, his eyes roll back, faints, concern x2, doctor says he got a bacterial infection and pneumonia, has a oxygen mask on, unconscious in the hospital bed, doctor claims that their could be complications and even meningitis, delirious, having nightmares, concern for him, loses consciousness again/ or sleep, keeps exercising and walking when he's not supposed to, healed and out of the hospital, suddenly becomes dizzy and uses wall for support, has a headache, breathing heavy

Episode 10: Hops on top of a car, gets thrown off and nearly gets hit with bullets, jumps out of the way of the car, grabs his head in pain, and hears a loud high pitched noise, in pain, heavy breathing

Episode 11-12: Nothing

Episode 13: Holding someone at gunpoint-- the man swerves the car and Sing hit's his head not he car window and loses consciousness

Episode 14: Colleague claims that Sing fell into a coma after the car accident and he received emergency treatment but he's still unconscious, doctor says he needs further assessment, gets a bad headache, in pain, grabbing his head, heavy breathing, told to stop hitting his head, uses crutch to get around, concern for him, the doctor says his condition/ or head injury has been making him urinate a lot more

Episode 15-17: Nothing

Episode 18: Running after a criminal-- looks very sweaty, and panting, suddenly has a terrible headache, grabs his head, groaning, hears a high-pitched noise, squatting down to the ground in pain, slams a fist into his head to stop the pain

Episode 19-20: Nothing

Episode 21: Get's punched in the head, seems stunned, grabs the side of his head in pain, struggled to chase after him, falls to the ground in pain, vision becomes blurry, groaning

Episode 22: Nothing

Episode 23: Looks slightly sweaty, coughs a little, gags, has to take pills, looks more sweaty, asked if he was alright, he says "He's use to it," claims he feels sick and dizzy sometimes, admits that he hasn't really been sleeping, in a fight and falls down a hill, shows unconscious in the grass, has a dream of getting shot again

Episode 24: Still unconscious in the grass, colleague tries to wake him up, slowly wakes up, looks in pain, breathing heavy

Episode 25: His lover finds out he's been wearing diapers in order to stay in the frontline [constant urinating/ lack of control due to brain injury]

Episode 26: Worried for someone, snuck up from behind and gets hit in the head, falls to the ground, repeatedly kicked in the stomach, and hit with a metal object, worried for him, forcing himself to get up to save lover--gets punched in the head, again gets kicked in the stomach, [scene is kind of disturbing], both are saved by friend, both worried for him

Episode 27: Ends up in the hospital, bandage around his head, looks uncomfortable/ or in pain, struggled to get up, concern for him, grabbing head in pain momentarily, goes to work meeting even though he is injured

Episode 28: Looks like he has a headache, momentarily pressed fist against temple and shuts his eyes tight, covers face with hands. for a second, experiencing some memory loss [forgot when his exam was even though he marked it on his calendar], experiencing head pain, grabs the ridge of his nose, keeps having to wipe his nose as he studies for exam, still has a headache, almost falls asleep/ use see his eyes slightly roll back, liquid is oozing out of his nose, collapses on his desk [faint/ fell asleep?}, colleague finds him the next morning and struggled to wake him up and became worried, he wakes up and claims he didn't faint and that he was sleeping, she says he looks really pale and forces him to go the the doctors, the doctor claims that the fluid from his brain was leaking from his nose, the doctor said in order to be cured he needs to go through a high-risk operation to get the shards out--but if the surgery were to fail then he would be in a vegetative state, the doctor says that his condition is very poor right now, gets too agitated and suffers from another headache and needs to squat down to the ground, attempting to take his exam but the fluid keeps leaking from his nose, asked if he was alright, liquid is leaking from his nose the more he gets agitated, he begins to cough and blood is pouring out of his mouth and he collapses to the floor

Episode 29: Ends up in the hospital, concern for him, coughing, looks sweaty, [fast-forward] he loses a lot of weight due to his condition (the actor lost a lot of weight for this part), His memory seems to be getting worse because he's struggling with the exam

Episode 30: Seems very exhausted

This book is just super fun. It's full of illustrations of people reading, and each of them has an amusing label. The Baggage is in the far back of the car during the trip. The Wiggle Worm is twisting and turning inside and under and on a blanket. The Barbarians are actually tearing up a book to share it, so four can read at once. (I do not endorse this.)

It's hard to say what age this book is for, but I'd have read it to my four-year-old, and she'd have improved her vocabulary, kept looking at the illustrations, and would never have given it away. (And if she had tried, I wouldn't have let her because I'd want it on my shelf somewhere between the art books and the picture books.)

I hope this is a runaway hit for Red Comet Press, which seems to be publishing many lovely books.

Closed off the year with my good friends Jackie, Sammo, my most watched actor of 2022 Yuen Biao, Miss Spain 1979 Lola Forner and Benny “The Jet” Urquidez and a rewatch of Wheels on Meals.

And started the new year with Samuel Fuller's Forty Guns. One of my goals this year is to get more women into my most watched directors and actors in my Letterboxd stats (2022 was almost a total sausagefest in both categories), and there is definitely a woman in this movie. Four, in fact, based on the IMDb credits. That's right, 25% of the women in this movie are visible right up there in that screenshot.

As an aside, one of the other women in that movie is Eve Brent, who Wikipedia tells me is best known for playing Jane in Tarzan's Fight for Life, and whose most popular movies on Letterboxd are The Green Mile, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and, uh, Garfield: The Movie. And yes, she wears that visor for most of her screentime.

And here are the last four movies I watched in 2022. A Jackie/Sammo/Yuen Biao classic, a Bruceploitation joint, and two pornos. Seems like a fitting end to my viewing history for the year.

One of My Favourite Hong Kong Dramas to Exist in My Lifetime!

If that bolded title was not obvious enough, I really do adore this drama series. I can watch this a thousand times and still not get sick of it. In fact, I have watched this quite a few times to count now. To be fair, I always loved watching shows to do with doctors or medicine, so this really isn’t a surprise to me, or anyone who knows me.

You might be surprised just how much one can learn from this show. Sure, if your first language is not the dialect Cantonese, it might be hard to understand unless you watch it with subtitles. But, nobody can deny how informative this drama is. Every time I tune into The Hippocratic Crush, I lowkey regret never having an interest in this line of work. That, is how much one can learn from the show.
