"He (Ecclestone) has such encyclopedic knowledge that Sebastian found that fascinating. And then Sebastian learned how to play backgammon, and of course Bernie likes a bet, and he would wind Sebastian up.
I used to say to him, because this would happen just before qualifying or the race, "Bernie, look, don't beat him too badly because you piss him off. You get him all upset before the race, so if you're going to beat him, do it nicely."
Interviewer: Would he really get him worked up?
"Absolutely, because he'd play a couple of games, let Sebastian win a few, and then say, "Come on, let's make it interesting, let's put some money in it." And Sebastian, by that point, is feeling super confident. So he puts the money down, and then he gets smashed. And he'd fall for it again and again.
I remember one time we met up during the summer break, and Bernie had an old friend of his in his 70s, and he bet Sebastian, "My friend, I bet you he can swim to that marker over there, which is about 100 meters away and back, quicker than you can."
And Sebastian was "Look, I'm 25 years of age; with all due respect to your friend, he's 77, I don't want to embarrass him." And Bernie said, "Well, let's make it interesting, let's bet a thousand dollars on it."
And the bet was for him to come down the next morning on the back of the boat, and swim. So Bernie spent the whole evening winding him up that his friend had won the 1962 Olympic games, which of course he hadn't; I think he could barely swim.
So we all arrived on the deck in the morning, and Bernie said to Sebastian, "There is only one condition to the bet. My friend likes to drink a glass of water before you jump in, swim to the marker, and back. Are you happy to accept that?"
So Sebastian said, "Yeah, that's fine." So anyway, a tray of water comes out. His friend, John, takes one glass, Sebastian goes to take the other glass, and he can't touch it, because he's put boiling water in it.
So his friend drinks the cool glass of water, jumps in, and Sebastian is trying to drink this, burning his lips.
And it was a great life lesson for him because Bernie said, "There you go, son; anything that seems too easy usually doesn't exist."

So let’s review:
Bernie Ecclestone told Lewis to retire out of respect to Schumi so he doesn’t break his record. Now he comes out to say he hopes Max breaks the record. The black man should not break the record out of respect to the white man, but another white man (who is always somehow connected to racism in this sport) gets to do it?
This sport is rotten to the core

Vettel completely happy
World champion Sebastian Vettel says he is "completely happy" at Red Bull Racing, admitting he is not into "myths" like Ferrari or Mercedes right now. The German has been linked with Ferrari several times, but he claims he is perfectly happy at Red Bull because it is providing him with a car to win races. "Let's get this straight. To win races is not easy; to win championships even less so, at whatever team," Vettel told Formula 1's official website. "I feel completely happy at Red Bull. Of course Ferrari and Mercedes do come with a huge legend, but I am not into myth right now. What's important for me is that, when I come from the track and look in the mirror in my hotel room, I want to be able to say, 'Yes, that's me and I am satisfied with what I see.' After Abu Dhabi it feels good to know that I don't have anything to prove to myself any more." Vettel also admitted he is not too worried about his possible future teammates, as he is aware that he needs to beat everybody to be the best.
"In the end I don't waste too many thoughts on who is my team-mate," he said in a joint interview with Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone "I want to be the best, so I have to beat them all, with the same car or any other. I would never ask my team to get me a teammate to my liking, but I expect two things from whoever has the second cockpit: honesty and respect."

Bernie Ecclestone stole tens of millions from the UK government - and hence the UK people - every year for eighteen years. Almost half a billion in total. That we know of. His penalty is that he has to pay it back. Along with the interest. Which of course, he's been making on that money all the while in between. Oh, and he has to pay an extra 74k in court costs.
He does zero jail time, because rich old white men don't go to jail. His penalty is therefore effectively zero. Oh, you got caught? Well, after 7 years of trying to claim you didn't get caught, you pay what you owe and not much else.
If I broke into a bank vault and stole 100k, I'd do about twenty years. Even if I did it at night, didn't harm or threaten anyone, I'd do twenty years. The justification being to dissuade other people from trying it.
But rich old white men don't go to jail, so there is zero incentive for every rich old white man not to do the exact same thing. Tax fraud is effectively free, for as long as you can get away with it. I mean, why wouldn't you? If you're rich enough to have that much money, you're obviously already a scumbag, so just carry on doing you.

A Xitter thread from September 22, 2023:
Fastest Pitstop @/FastestPitStop:
Andretti has reportedly moved to the final stage of FIA selection to become a Formula 1 team. The FIA has rejected the proposals of Hitech, Rodin Carlin, and LKYSUNZ, an Asian team financed with 1 billion from an American fund. Regarding LYKSUNZ' project, it was planned to have their headquarters in Asia and Africa, and to provide opportunities for drivers from both continents to get an opportunity to drive in Formula 1.
Simon Dau @/there_is_no_if:
Oh you are planning to have your headquarters in Asia and Africa, and provide opportunities for drivers from those regions to join F1? We've already got Zhou and Albon for Asia and Lewis kind of covers Africa for us too, so no thank you very much. Next!" 🤦‍♂️ #F1 #FIA
michael taylor @/wordsbymt replying to Simon Dau:
You're closer than you think. I personally heard Bernie Ecclestone call Hamilton "the African" at Monza...

Simon Dau, on September 22, 2023: Yep, latest interview with DailyMail, published earlier today:
"I'll tell you Max is one of us. In our sphere of Formula One nobody is like Lewis, nobody is." - Bernie Ecclestone saying the quiet part out loud. #F1

For completion, here is the same day reply to Simon Dau's initial tweet from LYKSUNZ's PR representative:
LYKSUNZ Steve Price @/PlanBstudio replying to Simon Dau:
Not just drivers. [edit] Eventually our entire team will be talent nurtured from our academies. Bringing people from underrepresented communities, cities, countries, and continents in to a global motorsport. Challenging the face and voice of F1 for good.

On This Day in F1: March 23rd
Present: Australia Day 2
History: 2016 GPDA Letter
On March 23rd, 2024, day 2 of the Australian Grand Prix was happening. There was continued backlash against Williams' decision to switch out Logan Sargeant for Alex Albon after Albon crashed his car the previous day. Sargeant was in the garage and showed professionalism concerning the situation.
But this situation has brought forth questions about parts allotment and what would happen if there were to be another unfixable Williams crash in the next few races.
Eight years prior, the GPDA was raising concerns over the direction of Formula One. In the letter, the GPDA directors urged F1 owners and stakeholders to rethink the governance structure. Though not explicitly named in the letter, it alluded to the GPDA's issues with then-owner Bernie Ecclestone.
Tumblr media
(Letter Transcript)
Just hours after the open letter was published, it was announced that Sky would get the broadcasting rights to F1. For the first time in 40 years, F1's broadcast would be moved from live free-to-air television in the UK. The following day, the new qualifying system was adopted by FIA President Jean Todt despite it being abandoned by teams following their criticism of it at the first race of the 2016 season.
These were just two of the reasons that caused the drivers to pen this open letter. Other decision-making concerns included:
the double points for just the 2014 final race which was the title-deciding race between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg
the major flaws with the hybrid engine regulations that were just being addressed
proposal to introduce a cheaper alternative engine to run alongside the turbo hybrids, with an equivalence formula to balance performance
All of these decisions could be traced back to either Ecclestone or Todt. Most of these decisions were to either spice up the racing or get more money.
In response to the letter, Bernie Ecclestone called the F1 drivers windbags and essentially powerless in enacting change within the sport.
Windbags United is what the 2016 drivers' dinner picture was captioned and was a jab at Ecclestone. (The dinner in itself is something to discuss on its own with drama over who paid the bill.)
