One of the BEST albums AND album covers of ALL TIME! Miles Davis, ‘Bitches Brew’ (1969)
The surrealist art for Bitches Brew was created by German painter Mati Klarwein, who was also responsible for the art on Santana’s Abraxas, another entry on this list. A study in contrasts, the full gatefold cover shows a modified negative rendition of the more familiar front cover — together, they embody Davis’ searching musical manifesto.

Top 10 Best Album covers of 2023 - Part 2 of 2
Part 1 Here
#5. Ludmilla - Vilã
Look, as much as I love the elegant look of Aymui Hamasaki's album cover, Ludmilla's red and black cover for Vilã just intrigues me more. Okay, I'm a bit of a simp, shut up.
#4. The View - Exorcism of Youth
On the topic of Red and Black, The View give us an absolutely fantastic album cover with great contrast and pleasing colours. The red sky offset by the Cooler blue water below, everything in silhouette, it is a very well made album cover. Props to the artist for this one.
#3. Lucinda Williams - Stories From a Rock n Roll Heart
MM-HMM, ROCK IT!
Dolly went with a glamourous side of Rock, which makes sense, Dolly is a glamourous woman, but Lucinda goes for a classier, more down to earth image. Rock and Roll has room for both aesthetics, but if I have to pick my favourite, I'm sorry but glamour isn't my thing.
#2. Raye - My 21st Century Blues
This is the kind of album cover that would have easily grabbed the number one spot. I love images that almost tell a story within themselves. This one reminding me of last year's winner "Everything I Didn't Say", and the hands poking out of the big pile of musical instruments is a nice touch, like multiple people are trying to claw out. I guess what keeps this from being number one, personally I think it could be stronger, like instead of musical instruments the pile could be full of other things that represent the ills of the 21st century, or it could've harkened back to the album covers of Robert Johnson or Lead Belly. It's a great image, but I wish it was stronger.
#1. Sarah & The Safe Word - The Book of Broken Glass
This album cover, it almost feels like it was specifically made for me. It's gothy, almost evoking images of Poe stories. Yet the colours are not too dark or muted, it almost does look like this album cover could be remade with stained glass, evoking imaged of gothic churches. I mean, I can't really say anything more about this cover than it's Beautiful.
Makes me really want another Aurelio Voltaire album just to talk about the cover art.
Honourable Mentions:
McKinley Dixon - Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? - Stylish illustrations always count for something.
Kesha - Gag Order - I would feel uncomfortable putting this on the list proper, Kesha's been through a lot so it wouldn't seem fair to brush it off though.
Jen Cloher - I Am the River, the River is Me - I imagine that feels good.
Taylor Swift - Speak Now (Taylor's Version) - Credit where it's due, that is a great cover. Not inviting the Swifties though, y'all saty away from me.
Ashnikko - Weedkiller - I almost have to applaud this one for not being Demidevil.
Yaeji - With a Hammer - Crash Thompson, I think Lil' Sweetie has competition.
Kamelot - The Awakening - I think we're done with power metal covers for a good while.
Joff Bush - Bluey: Dance Mode - Throwing a bone to Bluey Fans, to be fair it is pretty colourful.
Rebecca Black - Let Her Burn - ...I'm not touching this until everyone apologizes to her.
IVE - I've Ive - The graphic designer in me loves this, the Writer in me hates this.

6. Overdose — Trickle
I've known from the start that it all would fall apart
Heart-broken after dark
I'm such a fool for thinking anything has love for me, hah
Overdose, hold me close, darling
Feeling so low, falling
Close my eyes and let me leave my blues behind
This is actually a piece I finished a few months ago; I had wanted to experiment with a more solid line brush, color palettes, and cropped compositions, and I figured doing an album-cover-style piece would be good practice for it! I meant to post it back when i finished it in June, because I'm honestly super proud of how it came out! But i just never got around to it— super happy I get to share it with you all now :]
