The Incredible Hulk’s Diminished Legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Love it or hate it, one of the things that makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe work is the long term synergy. With Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, over a decade of movies came together to pull off one of the most entertaining spectacles of our time. It’s a universe that, for the most part, feels consistent and it builds on itself as each movie feels like an essential cog in a larger machine.
Some cogs are bigger than the others, though, and when it comes to “the others,” one can’t help but notice that 2008’s Incredible Hulk is something of a black sheep in the Marvel movie roster. These days, they’re just starting to dust it off as a property with the return of Tim Roth’s Abomination in She-Hulk and William Hurt’s General Ross’ gradually increasing role in the universe itself (he’ll appear in Black Widow and possibly other projects soon enough).
Now, there are plenty of reasons why Incredible Hulk is the green-skinned stepchild of the MCU. It made the least amount of money (about $42 million less than Captain America: The First Avenger, which was the second worst showing), the lead actor was recast afterwards, and its status as a Universal co-production meant that it would be the only movie in the first three Marvel phases that would not get its own sequel, no matter how popular Hulk was in the Avengers movies and Thor: Ragnarok.
It’s not like the MCU acted like Incredible Hulk never happened, but the creators definitely had a tendency to shove it into the corner and be somewhat vague about its existence. It became easier as the MCU became rich with more and more properties, but early on, it was very much the rage-filled elephant in the room.
The Hulk Design
There were a couple of ads for Avengers: Endgame that included shots from all the previous MCU movies in chronological order. For one, when it came to Incredible Hulk, all it had to show for it was Hulk’s fist bursting through the wall. In another, they just used shots from later movies and hoped nobody would notice. That’s because CGI or not, Ed Norton’s Hulk and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk were two very different beasts. Not only did they roughly resemble their actors, but Norton’s Hulk was more of a giant, angry bodybuilder with green skin while Ruffalo’s came off as more Cro-Magnon, like a shaved gorilla.
It means that while they could talk about Hulk’s exploits, they could never really show any flashbacks, as it would just look awkward. Similarly, Incredible Hulk filmed a cut opening where Banner tried to shoot himself, but the Hulk wouldn’t allow it. While it was a bit too extreme to show, Banner at least got to talk about it happening in Avengers.
The Effect on the World of the MCU
When you look at the events of Incredible Hulk, it keeps things focused on the characters and not the world at large. Sure, it would have been bigger news if the Abomination defeated the Hulk and went on an even bigger rampage, but that problem was nipped in the bud. If you’re a citizen of Marvel Earth, all there is to know is that some soda has been recalled and there was a monster fight in Harlem.
In the movies themselves, the only time the Harlem fight is brought up is in the background of Iron Man 2, where Nick Fury’s map signals it as a place of interest.
With the exception of the Hulk straight-up existing, the most lip service his movie got early on was the scene in Captain America: The First Avenger where Steve gave blood for further study. They needed something to give Emil Blonsky down the line and turn him into an angry Ninja Turtle.
Speaking of…
Whatever Happened to the Abomination?
Of Marvel’s Phase 1 villains, one died, a couple vanished confusingly into space only to come back later, and three were taken into custody. Ending up in custody means you’ll be back soon enough because prisons usually can’t hold the type of enemies who can throw down with the Avengers. Usually.
In other words, it’s pretty damn impressive that the Abomination has been kept off the grid since the Hulk choked him out in Harlem. She-Hulk will be his first real appearance since then, but his name has been on the tongue of Phil Coulson on Agents of SHIELD a few times.
The scene of Tony Stark appearing at the end of Incredible Hulk to confront General Ross is something that came off as a big deal at the time, but afterwards didn’t make too much sense. Piggybacking off the Iron Man post-credits scene, Stark was seemingly trying to recruit the Hulk into the Avengers. That didn’t exactly jibe with what they were going for afterwards, so they released a short film to make sense out of everything.
The Consultant featured Agent Coulson and Agent Sitwell discussing the unfortunate decision by the World Security Council to demand the Abomination join the team. After all, Blonsky is a decorated veteran and the Harlem incident could easily be blamed on Banner. Fury wasn’t in a position to refuse the Council, so the only hope was that General Ross – the guy in charge of Blonsky’s captivity – turned them down. And so, they sent Tony Stark. That final scene in Incredible Hulk was reframed as Tony Stark obnoxiously asking for the keys to Abomination for the Avengers and Ross being so annoyed by his antics that he straight-up refused.
Afterwards, Abomination was namedropped a couple of times in Agents of SHIELD, which is par for the course considering early Agents of SHIELD was about reminding us about stuff that happened in the movies and saying, “We’re part of all that!” According to the show, Abomination was kept in a special prison in Alaska that only a select few know about. There was an episode where SHIELD’s main prison lost power and one of the writers realized that they probably needed to note that Abomination wasn’t going to be an issue in this situation.
But hey, at least he finished his story. The Leader on the other hand…
Samuel Sterns and the Fate of the Leader
At the time, it was the right play. Tim Blake Nelson played the kind of surprise villain you’d find in your average CGI animated Disney movie. As Mr. Blue, he existed as Bruce Banner’s potential salvation, only to be revealed to be kind of over-the-line and sinister in terms of his gamma experiments. After turning Blonsky into the Abomination, Sterns was knocked to the floor and a sample of Banner’s irradiated blood dripped into the open wound on his head. Sterns seemed especially jazzed with a crazed expression as his head started throbbing and increasing in size.
And then…nothing! Not even a mention in a different movie or Agents of SHIELD. That’s what happens when you set up a villain for a sequel and then have legal reasons keeping you from making that sequel. That said, there is a follow-up to what the hell happened with Sterns.
Back in 2012, a prequel comic was released to coincide with the first Avengers movie. The Avengers Prelude: Fury’s Big Week showed that the events of Iron Man 2, Thor, and Incredible Hulk all happened over the course of a few days. We got to see those storylines from the perspective of SHIELD, especially a very overwhelmed and fatigued Nick Fury. That makes sense for the stuff with Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 as well as Mjolnir and the Destroyer in Thor, but what of Incredible Hulk?
As shown in this story, Black Widow was in the background of its events, keeping an eye on everything and realizing that she was way in over her head. She played clean-up on the Sterns situation by coming across his giant, mutated head in the aftermath. Sterns was quick to figure out her homeland from traces of her accent and thought to bribe her in some way, but she stonewalled him with a couple of bullets to the legs.
A year later, Sterns was shown floating in a tank, unconscious, as various SHIELD scientists studied him.
Will we ever see the Leader pop up in the MCU? I can’t imagine Tim Blake Nelson is too busy to appear on She-Hulk at some point.
Betty Ross
Bruce Banner’s old flame is now nothing but a footnote. Considering Banner moved on to another relationship and then another planet, there was never a reason to reintroduce Betty. The only nods to her were Tony Stark naming his Hulkbuster armor “Veronica” (get it?) and the Russo Brothers saying in an interview that Betty was one of those turned to dust by Thanos.
Maybe one day we’ll see Red She-Hulk. Don’t hold your breath, though.
Thunderbolt Ross
General Thaddeus Ross does the heavy lifting for keeping Incredible Hulk relevant. The guy came back for Captain America: Civil War, a movie that didn’t even have the Hulk in it! But it did give him the Henry Gyrich role in a time when Gyrich was probably off-limits since he was considered part of the X-Men corner of Marvel (he already had a very minor role in the first X-Men movie). A familiar face, Ross got to be the government liaison type who spoke with logic, but came off as an antagonistic killjoy.
Right or wrong, Ross’ insistence that the Avengers sign with the Sokovia Accords ruined the team in the face of Thanos’ rampage against the cosmos. He still got to show his respects as Tony Stark’s funeral at the end of Endgame.
Yet, that’s not the last we’ll see of him. In Black Widow, Ross is shown in the trailers. We don’t know his role quite yet, but there’s a lot of fan speculation that Ross might tie into the next roster of the Avengers. Maybe a team that’s government sanctioned and controlled. Maybe a team that’s an awful lot like the Thunderbolts.

It does seem that as the MCU reaches further and further outward, it looks back more and more on the events of Incredible Hulk. Then again, I doubt we’ll be seeing Ty Burrell’s Leonard Samson turn into a gamma-irradiated psychiatrist with long, luxurious hair any time soon.

Bad boy Jughead keeps embarrassing himself every time town sweetheart Betty Cooper is around
Thanks for dropping by, @gay-for-rey1999 . I finally finished your prompt and I hope I’ve done it justice!
Blonde Ponytails And Leather Jackets
Tumblr media
Bughead AU: There is no Black Hood, Jason Blossom was never murdered, and Jughead Jones had always been a Southside Serpent. He was never friends with any of the Northsiders.
It was a hot afternoon and all the students in Mr. Calpone’s class were sweaty and tired. Not to mention bored. Jughead Jones was editing an article for Southside High’s school newspaper, the Red & Black. He looked up from his work for a minute to take a look around the room. Sweet Pea was sitting with his feet propped up on the desk, busy tearing up paper to make spit wads. Toni Topaz was sitting next to Jughead, playing with her pink hair. Most of the other students were on their phones, or napping.
“Okay, guys. Listen up,” Mr. Calpone said, clapping his hands. “Southside High is doing a student exchange program with Riverdale High as part of the town’s collaborative society scheme.
“We’ll be hosting fifteen Riverdale High students for a few weeks so that they can see what school is like here in the Southside. Fifteen of you will be assigned to give them the tour and help them over the course of this program. From your class, Ellen, you have Ethel Muggs. Starke, you have Midge Klump. And Toni, you have Elizabeth Cooper.”
Toni groaned loudly but Mr. Calpone just ignored her.
“The students will be coming here tomorrow so I want you all to be kind to them and actively participate in making their stay enjoyable.”
A few kids started to snicker. Mr. Calpone sighed.
“Just don’t do anything stupid, guys.”
The bell rang and the students ran out of the class. Toni’s shoulders slumped as she walked.
“Why is it always me that gets stuck with tours for new students?”
“Because,” Sweet Pea answered, putting his arm around her shoulder. “You’re such a nice and lovable person with a great personality.” He and Fangs started to guffaw, and Toni swatted his arm.
“What was the girl’s name again? Elizabeth something?”
“Cooper.” It was Jughead who spoke up. “I’m guessing she’s Alice Cooper’s daughter.”
“Great,” Toni sighed. “I’m stuck with the daughter of the monster who prints shit about us in that newspaper.”
Southside High. A school that required you to go through a metal detector before you were permitted to enter. It was a very dingy place, and gave off an unwelcoming vibe. Graffiti plastered the walls, and no one had even made an effort to cover it up. The walls were gray, which matched the gloomy atmosphere. Southsiders loitered in the hallways, eyeing the Northsiders who were on their turf.
Betty Cooper shivered. She felt uncomfortable under their hostile stares as she and the fourteen other Riverdale High students made their way to the office. She wished she could have avoided coming but her mother thought that it was a good opportunity to dig a little deeper in the Jingle Jangle case.
“Betty, look,” Kevin whispered to her, nodding his head in the direction of a group of menacing teens. There were about eight or nine of them, all wearing black leather jackets. As one of the boys turned around, Betty saw the large snake embroidered onto the back of his jacket. Southside Serpents. Riverdale’s infamous criminal gang lead by the notorious FP Jones. They were people you did not want to mess with. Betty wasn’t afraid of them though. Her mother had taught her that they were not people to be feared as it would only give them power over her.
One of the Serpents caught her staring at them. He raised an eyebrow at her, challenging her to say something. Betty quickly looked away, her cheeks flushing. She took a quick glance back and saw the Serpent watching her, his gaze unnerving. He was devastatingly handsome, Betty realized with a shock. He had gorgeous black curls, a chiseled face, and intense blue eyes.
“Betty,” Kevin nudged her arm, pulling her out of her thoughts. Betty craned her neck to see Southside High’s principal, a tall, broad-shouldered man named Mr. DeVilio, smiling at them.
“Welcome to Southside High,” he said in a deep tone. “We’re excited to have you here and we hope that you feel welcome in our Southside family. Without further ado, let’s get you your schedules and show you around.”
Betty picked up her own schedule and looked around at the Southside High students waiting for them.
“Elizabeth Cooper?” a voice behind Betty asked. She turned around to see a cinnamon-skinned girl with pink hair, looking at her.
“That’s me,” Betty said smiling. The girl looked….. friendly enough.
“I’m Toni Topaz,” the girl said. “I’m giving you the tour.”
“Great,” Betty said. “And it’s just Betty.”
Toni gave her a small smile. “Sure, yeah.”
She turned around and Betty inhaled sharply. Toni was wearing a Serpent jacket.
Wonderful, Betty thought. I’m being given the tour by a Serpent.
Jughead sat down at the Serpents’ empty lunch table, biting into an apple. The others were yet to come. The Ghoulies had challenged them to a bike race and Sweet Pea had accepted, thirsty for a competition. All the other Serpents had gone for moral support, but Jughead wasn’t too fond of bike racing. Toni was the only one besides him who hadn’t gone, but that was only because she had to give the tour.
Jughead remembered the girl from that morning, the one with the blonde ponytail and bright green eyes. She had looked at him, at the Serpents, without a trace of fear. It was surprising, considering that most everyone cowered in their presence.
“Hey, Jughead,” someone called. Jughead looked up to see Toni walking his way. But she wasn’t alone. The blonde girl from before was with her, her eyes widening when she saw him. They approached the table, Toni sitting down. Ponytail slowly sat down next to her, placing her backpack beside her.
“Jughead, this is Betty Cooper,” Toni introduced. “And Betty, this is Jughead Jones.”
“Betty Cooper,” Jughead said slowly, staring at her. “Alice Cooper’s daughter, huh?”
“Yes,” Betty answered. “ And you’re Jughead Jones…….?”
“You seriously don’t know who I am?” Jughead was startled. Everyone knew who he was.
Betty shook her head.
“My father is FP Jones,” Jughead answered. He saw the name register in her brain, and her eyes grew large. But she wiped off the astonished expression quickly, replacing it with a icy cool look.
“You’re the Serpent Prince,” she stated simply. He nodded, giving her one of his infamous cocky grins that made most girls swoon. But Betty looked unfazed.
“Do you expect me to bow down or something?”
The smile disappeared, and he stared at her, shocked. No one had ever dared to talk to him like that before.
“Betty-” Toni started, but Jughead held up a hand, stopping her.
This girl was not like any other girl he’d ever been with and he’d been with a good amount. She didn’t give in to his smile or his looks. She wasn’t scared of him, but rather, she was daring. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. And that’s what made her interesting.
Jughead smiled at her, a real smile this time.
“Betty Cooper, how would you like to go on a date with me?”
It was Betty’s turn to look shocked. Her mouth set in a firm line.
“I’d rather not go out with someone who thinks he can make the world bend at his will.” And she got up and left.
Jughead sat their stunned, never having been rejected before. Toni was staring after Betty, her mouth in an ‘O’.
Jughead smirked. Betty Cooper was going to be a challenge.
Betty stalked out of the cafeteria, fuming. How dare Jughead Jones try to ask her out on a date? After acting like he was superior to her? She didn’t care that he was the son of Riverdale’s most dangerous gang leader. Or that he had breathtaking blue eyes.
She walked out of the school building, turning at the corner. He was a self-absorbed arrogant asshole who didn’t deserve anyone’s attention. And Betty sure as hell wasn’t going to give him any.
Betty didn’t see Kevin in front of her, and almost crashed into him.
“Betty, hey,” Kevin said, his face red.
“Sorry, Kev. I didn’t see you there. What are you doing?” Kevin was standing behind the school with a Southside Serpent, a boy with long black hair and green eyes. They were both breathing heavily and Kevin’s normally perfect hair was tousled.
“We, uh, well this is Joaquin. And we were just, um-” But Kevin didn’t get a chance to finish. He was interrupted by people shouting in front of the school.
“What the hell,” Joaquin said, moving past Betty to see what was happening. Kevin and she followed him to the school parking lot where a large crowd had gathered. They pushed forward until they were at the front of the crowd and Betty gasped.
A group of boys were beating up the Serpents, who were fighting back. Punches were thrown, blood was dripping, bruises had started to form. And no one seemed to be trying to stop the fight. Instead, the bystanders were cheering them on.
The crowd parted and Jughead Jones appeared, a look of fury on his face. Toni was right behind him but she hung back while he surged forward pulling a Serpent off of a battered boy.
“What the fuck is going on here?” he growled.
One of the boys from the group stepped forward, wiping his bloody nose.
“Why don’t you ask your fellow Sweet Pea, Jones? He’s the one who agreed to the race.”
Jughead turned around and glared at an obviously injured Sweet Pea.
“What did you do?”
“It was nothing, Jones. It’s not my fault the Ghoulies are sore losers,” Sweet Pea replied.
“Oh really? Then why did you scratch my bike?” the boy from before asked.
“I DID NOT SCRATCH YOUR BIKE,” Sweet Pea thundered.
“Enough, Cross. You were in a fucking bike race. Did you really think that your bike wouldn’t take a few hits?” Jughead said to the boy.
Cross looked surprised at Jughead’s answer.
“You will pay for this, Jones.”
Jughead shook his head and turned away. He saw Betty watching him and smirked at her. Keeping his eye on her he called to Cross.
“Hey, Cross.” Cross turned around only to be met with Jughead’s fist connecting with his jaw. He spit out blood and stared at Jughead, furious.
“I don’t know what’s gotten into you, Jones. This isn’t normally how we deal with issues. You’re never violent and I don’t like it.”
And he punched Jughead in the head, hard. Jughead hit the ground with a loud thud while Cross and the other Ghoulies walked away. Toni ran up to Jughead, helping him get up. He straightened up, his ears red. He saw Betty watching him, calculating. His entire face turned red and he walked towards the school building, brushing past the snickering students.
If that was how he was trying to impress her, then it sure as hell wouldn’t work, Betty thought. He had just ended up embarrassing himself.
Jughead spent the rest of the day glowering at anyone who tried to talk to him. His head was throbbing but he busied himself with the newspaper, editing and planning. He loved to write. It was his way of coping with the tough Serpent’s life. He sat in the Red & Black’s office, typing away on the computer even after the rest of the school had left.
After today, he wouldn’t ever be able to face Betty Cooper again. He had acted rashly, punching Cross. As much as he hated the Ghoulies, Jughead and Cross were usually on good terms. And his actions today were unforgivable.
The door of the Red & Black opened and Jughead looked up to see who it was. Toni entered, camera in hand. He glared at her and returned to his work.
“Jeez, Jones,” Toni said. “That scowl isn’t doing anything for your looks.”
“What do you want, Toni?” Jughead asked impatiently.
“I’m the photographer for the newspaper, Jughead. I have a right to be in here,” Toni stated, pulling up a chair and sitting next to Jughead.
“But normally, you want something,” Jughead sighed and looked at her. “So what is it?”
“I just wanted to talk,” Toni said. “About today. What was that whole thing with Cross?”
“I don’t know, Toni,” Jughead answered tiredly. “I saw Betty watching me and something inside me made me do it.”
Toni was hiding a smile. “Were you trying to impress her?”
“Maybe. I’m not sure. All I know is that I ended up embarrassing myself.”
“Wow, Jughead Jones, the Serpent Prince, embarrassing himself for some pink lipstick and bubblegum Northsider? Could it be possible that his Royal Highness is falling in love?”
Jughead looked at Toni. “She’s interesting, Toni, in a way that no girl has ever been before. She hasn’t fallen for my great looks, which is astounding considering that I manage to woo every girl I meet with my dark locks and magnificent blue eyes.” He smiled.
Toni laughed. “Okay, lover boy. I get it. You like her. Have you ever considered being just you? Like real and raw Jughead Jones and not cocky, arrogant Serpent. Because I think she would really like that side of you.”
Jughead sighed. “Yeah, so that I can embarrass myself again? I don’t think so.”
Toni shrugged. “I actually happen to know what girls like, Jughead. Take some advice from a friend. Be yourself.”
With that, Toni got up and left the office, leaving Jughead with his own thoughts.
Betty walked to Southside High from the bus stop the next morning, worried that she would be late. Today, the kids from Southside Elementary would be coming to the high school. They had their school concert coming up and they would be rehearsing in Southside High’s small auditorium. That meant a larger crowd of people on the premises of the school. As she got closer to the school, she noticed a little girl crying near the door. A figure was crouched next to her and talking to her in a low voice.
“It’ll be alright, Suzie. You’ll be fine. He doesn’t matter if he left. What matters is you, your brother, and your mommy. Life will be better without him, you’ll see.”
With a shock, Betty realized that is was Jughead talking to the little girl. He was comforting the crying child, telling her that she would be alright.
“We’re both going to be late if we don’t get going, Suzie. You don’t want to be in trouble do you? Well then, how about we go?”
Suzie nodded, hiccuping.
“Wipe your tears.”
She did so.
“Okay then. You are a strong girl. You can smile for me, can’t you? There we go. Go on then. I’ll pick you up after school.”
Suzie went inside, clutching her backpack straps. Jughead stood up, stretching.
“I didn’t peg you for a softy.”
Jughead whipped around, startled. He saw Betty standing there, his face unreadable.
“Hey, Cooper.”
“What was all that about?“
“That’s Suzie Kemp. She lives at Sunnyside, same as me. Her dad ran out on her, her mom and brother last night. Her mom doesn’t have a job and she was drinking all last night. Suzie’s pretty scared so I tried to calm her down.” Jughead answered. He looked down at his feet.
“Oh,“ Betty replied. "So is her mother out looking for a job?”
“It’s not that easy to find jobs here in the Southside, Betty,” Jughead said looking up at her. His blue eyes were cold. "Why do you think there’s so much crime out here? Because there aren’t enough jobs to go around. People have no choice but to become criminals to feed their families. You Northsiders act as if we do it on purpose but in reality, we don’t really have a choice.“
Betty stared at him. The comment stung but she knew it was true. She’d seen the way that the people here lived, in rundown homes or trailers.
"I’m so sorry,” Betty said. “I there was something I could do.”
Jughead’s expression softened. “Do you have a minute to talk?”
Betty nodded, well aware that she would be drastically late to class. Jughead gestured to a picnic table to the side of the school and the two went there and sat down. Jughead looked out at the horizon and spoke.
“I used to live with my whole family, my mom, my dad, and my little sister Jellybean. My dad had been a Serpent ever since he was sixteen. But being a Serpent doesn’t guarantee you a steady job. So my dad used to work at this construction firm in the Northside. One day, something happened between him and his boss, and the next thing we know, he’s home and unemployed.” Jughead ran a hand through his hair.
“My mom tried to get him to find a new job but he would come up empty handed every single day. No one wanted to hire a Southsider. We we’re running low on money and it was taking a toll on my dad. That’s when he started drinking. Every single night, he’d come home late, a beer in his hand, and pass out on the couch. My mom was doing her best trying to make ends meet, but my dad wasn’t making things easier. They would yell at each other every night. It was awful. And I was only seven years old. One morning I woke up only to find her gone, taking my sister along but leaving me behind to fend for myself with my alcoholic father. I joined the Serpents when I was only thirteen because of him.”
He let out a breath, as if he was relieved that he was finally able to tell someone. Betty sat in silence. She didn’t know how to respond. Here she was, sitting with one of the most dangerous men in Riverdale while he told her his miserable life story. Jughead Jones was much deeper than she had thought. There was a caring, loving side to him that he hid. A boy who had grown up all too fast, and was afraid to love or be loved. And here he was, making sure other kids like him would be okay. He might have been a Serpent, but he was a good man.
Jughead was watching her, she realized, waiting for her reaction.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I didn’t know.”
He shook his head. "Very few people do. Do I strike you as the kind of guy to write out my horrible childhood in a ballad? Because I’m not. I’m just a damaged weirdo from the wrong side of the tracks.”
Betty smiled at him slowly. "So, Jughead Jones. How about that date?”

I Never Knew
Read on ao3 here
Based on the prompt by @jokerscrown on @bughead-fanfic-wishlist
Despite her pale skin, frumpy hair, and hospital gown, Jughead thought she was beautiful. She must have thought the same of him, even in her post anesthesia state, because she had just asked him to marry her – even though they had just met.
Jughead is a nurse! Betty is a patient – She’s a little OOC due to drugs after surgery. But I thought this was a cute little AU idea!
I’m actually a night shift nurse on an orthopedic unit, so I’m sorry if there’s boring or technical bits! I couldn’t help but have it be a little accurate. Though obviously I would NEVER get involved with a patient.
Should I write a 2nd part? Let me know!
Thin, long fingers smoothed over navy fabric. He brushed some small white hairs to the ground. There were still some persistent ones sticking to the bottom of his scrub top. He didn’t bother with them, instead shooting a glare to his dog that was curled up on the couch sleeping. The shaggy dog blowing out a soft snore, as if he knew he was being watched. He really needed a new lint roller.
He pulled his work beanie on over his dark hair, tugging it down and tucking in the end of the strands hanging in front of his eyes. He pulled his red flannel jacket on, zipping it up and grabbing his gloves. He checked that Hot Dog’s water bowl was filled and left the light above the stove on for him before locking his door to his apartment. It was cold out, enough that his breath was visible, and his throat ached from the cold air. Snow was still sprinkling down after their big flurry yesterday.
The drive to Mercy Hospital, in Riverdale, wasn’t very long at all. He lived on the edge of town in a quiet apartment complex by the river, and it only took him 15 minutes to get there. He was still driving his old beat up truck his father gave him for his 16th birthday. It was about on its last legs, but he was really stretching it. He was working on paying off his student loan before he took on a car payment.
With the hospital coming into view, Jughead grabbed his ID badge out of the center console and flipped it to slide through the card reader at the entrance of the parking garage. The perks of working nightshift, he didn’t have to park in the lot and walk. After going around up to the third floor of the garage, he parked his truck and clipped the badge to the front of his scrub top. He slipped the mirror down, glancing at himself. The name reflected back from the badge always made him frown.
He was still bitter about the fact they wouldn’t let him put Jughead on there. No, had to be his godforsaken actual name. He huffed a sigh, stuffing his keys into his coat pocket and trudging over to the steps and falling in love with the other nurses and aids heading in for their shift. The sun had already set, the orange glow just starting to fade behind the building. He stopped at the Starbucks inside the hospital, grabbing a coffee to drink. He liked night shift, he was a night owl anyway so this worked for him.
He took the elevator up to his unit, orthopedics, and dropped his coat and gloves off in the locker room. He sipped his coffee, gathering his pens and then slinging his black stethoscope around his neck. Since Jughead worked at night there was no management around, so he was able to continue wearing his beanie. He went to the break room and looked briefly at his assignment for the night. Then he sat down on the old flowery couch they had in there, pulling his phone out. They always did a safety huddle before the next shift to discuss the patients on the floor.
Blue eyes scanned his phone, answering a text he had missed from Archie earlier in the day. Jughead was scrolling through Facebook when someone plopped down next to him.
“Hey Jug, you ready for tonight?” Veronica Lodge, one of his co-workers and also friend outside of work. She also happened to be dating his best friend, the aforementioned Archie. Coincidence? Yes, he introduced them after Veronica had stalked his social media pages and found Archie in his photos.
He gave a shrug, “Never really ready. But yeah, I’m ready to get it over with and go home and go back to sleep.” Jughead looked watched her roll her eyes, his own tracking the way she was paying with the string of pearls she always wore. Her hair was up in a bun tonight, with a flowery headband to perk up the navy she was forced to endure.
“Lucky. I have to stay up today. Me and Arch are going out of town this weekend to see his parents. Maybe I can sleep in the car?” she scrunched her face up at the idea. He gave a chuckle, sliding his phone back into the pocket of his shirt. He drummed his fingers against his pants, fingers scratching his knee.
He liked working with Veronica though, so it would make the night go faster, having someone to talk to. They were some of the youngest working on their floor, most of the other nurse’s were more middle aged or in their 30’s.
After their meeting he printed his report sheets and looked over his assignment, waiting for report from the day shift nurse. Jughead had three post up patients, two from a knee replacement and one from surgery on a shoulder fracture. He also had someone waiting for a repeat surgery on their ankle, and one who was a couple days out from a partial hip replacement. He gave a lot of pain medication to these types of patients, as anything to do with bones were generally painful.
He went through his list of patients with the day shift nurse, stopping outside of each room and then going in to meet the patients and check if they needed something. They were on their last one, the most recent post op, the shoulder fracture.
“Elizabeth Cooper, 24, suffered a fall on some ice and fractured her proximal humerus. She had an ORIF done, I’ve only had her an hour so she’s still pretty out of it. She’s got a sling and swathe on, with coverlet dressing.” He looked at his sheet as the nurse spoke, nodding along. He underlined a few of the words so his eyes could find them quickly when needed. He wrote down her pain medications and then they stepped into the room.
The lights were turned down, and he wrote his name on the white board under the ‘nurse’ section. Jughead looked over to the patient and felt his mouth go dry. Even with her eyes closed, blonde hair messy and fanned out on her pillow, and chapped lips he couldn’t help but find her beautiful. He busied himself checking out her oxygen levels and pulse on the machine next to her. They didn’t wake her, Jughead saying he would wait until her meds were due.
After report he went through his patients notes on the computer, looking at what meds they had due, their pain med options, and their lab values. He decided to stop and see room 18, the shoulder patient who was only a year younger than him. He always felt slightly awkward when taking care of younger patients, he always felt more at ease with his older ones.
He entered her room after knocking gently on the door, she didn’t arouse to that. He checked her oxygen and pulse on the monitor, and checked her IV fluids. Pulling her blankets down, he glanced up to her face, she seemed to still be sleeping.
“Elizabeth, I’m just going to take a look at the dressing on your shoulder, and feel your pulses.” He narrated what he was going to do, should she actually be awake. They were always supposed to describe what they were doing.
Jughead unbuttoned the shoulder of her hospital gown on her right side, taking a look at the dressing there. He felt around it, feeling the temperature and noting the swelling. He buttoned her back up, fingers traveling down to where her wrist was peeking out the sling. He felt her pulse with his  fingers, and checked the capillary refill on her fingertips.
“Alright,  Elizabeth, I’m going to listen to your heart and lung sounds now, okay?” he positioned his stethoscope in his ears and held it over her gown in all the spots he needed to assess her properly. Once he was done, he took a peek at her IV site in her left arm to make sure it was working properly and then walked over to the computer in the room. He charted a few things, checked her diet orders, and then went to fetch a cup of ice chips to put on her table.
When he came back he had leant over her to place the cup on the table to her left, rather than walk all the way around the bed. Suddenly her hand shot out and fisted in his scrub top, yanking him down towards her. “You.. have GOT to be the sexiest.. man I’ve ever seen,” her voice was wavering in and out of quietness and above appropriate volume, her words slightly slurred. He chuckled at her, the glazed over look in her green eyes telling him all he needed to know.
“Now, Elizabeth, while that might be true you can’t talk to your nurse that way,” Jughead covered her hand with his, unclenching her fingers from the material of his shirt. She shook her head quickly at his words and then clenched her eyes shut tightly, bringing her good hand up to her forehead. “Ohhh.. dizzy,” she moaned, head pressing back into her pillow.
He rolled his eyes at her and put the head of her bed back a little. “Do you know where you are right now?” he questioned, crossing his arms over his chest. Her eyes opened again and he couldn’t help but glance towards them. Bright, wide, mesmerizing – were just a few words that popped into his head. His lips tightened in a small frown.
“Uh, yeah, duh.” She snorted, trying to wiggle around in the bed.
He raised an eyebrow at her, one hand gesturing for her to continue. “And where is that?”
“The hospital, silly.” she whispered at him, giggling.
“Which hospital?”
“Umm, Greendale?” Jughead shook his head at her, lips quirking up a little.
“Not quite, you’re still in Riverdale.”
“Shit, don’t tell my mother that I’m here,” she groaned, bringing her hand up to her face and swiping it down dramatically.
“Elizabeth I think you-“
“Don’t call me that.” she shouted over him, her hand reaching out and grabbing one of his crossed arms. He grabbed her hand with his, folding it back to her side.
“What should I call you then?” he asked simply, as he himself didn’t like his name, so who was he to judge?
“Call me Betty,” She licked her lips, eyes drooping a little as her voice got softer.
Jughead’s tongue reached out, licked his bottom lip. “Betty,” he tested out. Her face lighting up in a small smile. Her hand reach out to him again, clawing weakly at his crossed arms. “You can call me Jughead.” He offered in return.
“You’re so nice, will you marry me Jughead?” she proposed, her eyes slipped closed. Fingers falling from his arm, her lips parting and breathes evening out. He shook his head at her, wondering when the anesthesia was going to be out of her system. People did and said weird things after surgery, so he was pretty immune. However when a beautiful young blonde says stuff like this? He couldn’t help his heart racing a little.
He left the room with a promise to check on her falling on deaf ears.
He saw his other patients and dished the rounds of evening meds before grabbing a drink of water and sitting at the nurse’s station. He sat across from Veronica, booting up the computer.
“So, I just had one of my patients ask me to marry them,” just casual conversation, right?
Veronica snorted, the coffee she was sipping on settled back on the table. “You get marriage offers like, once week Jug,” her eyes were still glued to the computer screen, blue light reflecting off the reading glasses she wore when working with the computers.
“I’ll have you know that this wasn’t an old lady,”
A perfectly arched brow rose, her eyes then lifting and looking up at him across the desk. “Color me intrigued then,”
“It was this young patient I have, around our age. She’s really attractive, despite laying in a hospital.” He was a little smug, however he left out the part about her being high off meds.
“Well, well, well. What an interesting development.” She seemed to ponder for a moment, finger tapping her lip as she looked up to the ceiling.
“How can we hook you up without it being totally weird?”
Jughead rose his own eyebrows in response, reaching a hand up and scratching at his hair under his beanie. “Uh, no right answer there, Ronnie.” It was never good to look up patients after they left your care – and certainly not to give them your number.
She shook her head at him, eyes turning devious as she smirked. “I can.. look her up on social media because she’s not MY patient and then we can find out-“
“I don’t think that’s-”
“-though she might not be working for a while now since she had shoulder surgery,”
“- not a good idea.”
“Maybe I can ask for her number? Or maybe we can send Archie in there as a visitor or send her flowers-“
“Okay, enough, Ronnie.” He raised his voice a little to get her attention, lips dipping down into a frown at her. She tended to go a little crazy when it came to this kind of stuff. “I don’t even know if she’s single-”
“Yes she is, says it right here.” She had shoved her phone in his face from across the desk. He leaned back a bit, glaring up at her, but he couldn’t help but take a peek down to her phone. There was Betty’s Facebook profile, including picture which she looked like a model in – all tanned skin, pink glossy lips, hair falling in waves about her shoulders. Her smile was so beautiful, she was beautiful. He felt this mouth go a little dry and he cleared his throat, shaking his head at Veronica.
“It’s not gonna happen Veronica.” He used her name in warning, going back to his work on the computer. She let out a ‘tsk’ and sat back down. He knew this wasn’t likely to be the end of It though.
He finished his charting, crossing off the meds he had given and tasks he had done on his sheet of paper. He folded it up and put it in the pocket on the front of his scrub top. He decided to go check on Betty again.
Luckily he did because she was already halfway out of bed, still attached to her leg pumps, the IV line, and oxygen monitor. “Woah, woah, lets sit you back down.” He rushed over to her putting a hand on her good shoulder and holding her steady as she plopped back down on the bed sheepishly. He stepped back, untangling all the cords attached to her. “What were you doing getting up by yourself?”
“I’m sorry, I have to pee..” Betty’s pale cheeks were now flushed red and she was chewing on her lower lip. Her free hand was clenching the edge of her gown by her knees.
“That’s okay, you’re allowed to have to pee. I guess I didn’t get a chance to explain the call button before you passed out.” He pulled the wraps off her legs, and noticed her bare feet. He walked over to the linen cabinets in the room and grabbed a pair of the hospital grey non-slip socks. Bending down he grabbed her ankle, lifting her foot up a little, fingers sliding over the delicate skin there, cool to the touch. He slipped her socks on, trying not to think anything else about her legs or ankles and how they might feel locked around his hips.
“Alright, I’ll help you to the bathroom and push your IV pole for you.” He wrapped his arm around her left one, hauling her up. He had either underestimated his strength or her weight because she came up quickly and hard into his chest. He righted her position, letting her gather her balance.
“Feel okay?” he looked her over, making sure she wasn’t going to pass out or fall. She nodded at him, stretching her legs a little before starting to walk to the bathroom across the room. Jughead tugged the IV pole along behind her, holding the back of her gown closed for her privacy. They made it to the bathroom and she slipped inside while he slid the door closed standing just outside.
He let out a slow sigh, leaning his head against the wood door. Closing his eyes he tried to get rid of thoughts clouding his vision, the glimpse of her naked back before he quickly pulled her gown closed.
Jughead heard the toilet flush and he waited a moment, stepping back from the door. He heard the water faucet turn on and then a moment later, the door slid open. She was throwing a paper towel away and peeking through the opening up at him. She was chewing on her lip again.
“Could you…” she paused, the words seeming to fail her. She cleared her throat, touching the base of it before running a hand through her hair, pulling some strands behind her ear. “Could get into my bag and find my underwear?” her cheeks were a pretty flushed red, dipping down to her chest and underneath the gown.
He chuckled a little at her embarrassment and smiled at her. “Of course,” he walked back to the bed, a green linen bag sitting on the bedside table. He looked through it, hands ruffling the different fabrics inside until he found a scrap of light blue lace that had to be underwear because it surely couldn’t be anything else. He held it up stretching it out between his fingers just to check. Yep. Cheeky.
He shuffled back to the bathroom and knocked on the partially open door. Betty turned back from where she was trying to finger comb her hair in the mirror. He held the underwear out to her, dangling from the tip of his index finger. He rose his eyebrows, leaning against the doorway. She snatched them from his hand, avoiding his eyes.
She looked at then in her grasp and then down to her socked feet. Her green eyes found his, her head tilting a little. “Could you just.. hold onto me while I put these on? I don’t think I can balance myself just yet.”
He nodded, “Sure, “ he then placed a steadying hand on her upper arm, fingers curling around her bicep and applying some pressure. She seemed a little dazed for a second before bending down a little and stepping  into the underwear, slipping the fabric up her legs. As she pulled herself upright, she dipped forward and Jughead tightened his grip on her arm, pushing her upright. “Careful,” he reminded her, as her hand disappeared underneath her gown, the fabric shoved up high on her thighs.
He couldn’t stop himself from looking.
She was finished a second later, the fabric fluttering back down around her knees. He let go of her arm then. She then turned her back to him, no longer holding the gown closed. He could see the whole of her back, all smooth skin peppered with freckles, only a couple inches hidden by the sling and swathe that held her arm close to her chest. He could also see that her underwear could barely be considered such.
“Would you tie me?” he looked at him in the mirror, a small smirk on her face now. She had seen how he looked at her.
Fingers darted out, tugging the strings on each side of the gown to meet together, overlapping so that her backside wasn’t on display anymore. He gave a little cough, guiding the IV pole behind her as she walked back to bed. Once he got her settled in and comfortable sitting upright he gestured to the ice chips. “Thirsty? Hungry?”
She looked at the cup, tongue darting out and licking her lower lip. “I mostly just have a dry mouth,” Betty was reaching out for the spoon, taking a spoonful of ice and crunching down.
Jughead crossed his arms over one another, a hand at his mouth. He observed her, the way that the walk back and forth to the bathroom made her even more tired. As if on cue, she yawned.
“Are you having any pain?” he questioned, glancing to her shoulders, which she were holding tightly. Her eyes flicked up to him, mouth around a spoonful of ice. She seemed to think about his question, dropping the spoon to her bedside table with a sigh.
“Yes. It’s not terrible, but it does hurt.” She seemed guilty, like she didn’t want to complain.
“Do you want to take some pain medication?” she frowned at his words, fingers of her left hand fingering the ones on her right that she said were still a little numb. The actual shoulder is the first part to wake up from a nerve block, so he knew it was likely to only get worse.
“I guess so.. just some thing small though, I just want to try and go back to sleep. Forget this day even happened,” she trailed off. Leaning her head back against her pillow. Her eyes fluttered closed and she rubbed the side of her forehead.
Jughead was glad that it seemed she was over that med high phase, and agreed that something small would be a good idea, they could always take something more later.
He gathered up a cup of jello, some water and a packet of saltine crackers along with a pain pill. He encouraged her to eat both as they would help with any nausea with pain meds might cause.
She managed to eat both while he was scanning the med in and doing a little charting while he waited. She downed the pill and then he laid her head back some, fetching a warm blanket to throw over top of her. He had given her the call button this time with a promise to come check on her in a little while. As he was turning to leave, her hand caught his arm, stopping him.
“Thank you, Jughead.” She said, testing out the name he had given her earlier despite his badge reading ‘Forsythe’. He was a little surprised that she remembered their conversation from earlier at all. Maybe that was why she had been so embarrassed, because of the things she had said. “I really appreciate everything you’re doing.”
He gave her a little smile, pulling his arm away and giving her hand a small squeeze before backing up towards the door. “It’s my job, Betty.”
She rolled her eyes at him. “Thank you,” she repeated, more softly this time. Her hand falling to her chest and clutching the warm blanket against her chest. Her eyes closed and he turned the light in the room off, cracking her the door to her room.
He stopped in the hallway, the smile on his face reflecting the happiness in his heart. He never knew he could love his job so much.
Maybe he would see what Veronica could do to help him after all. He could tell Betty was the kind of person he wanted to get to know.

do you have a favourite scene you've ever written?
Dark Betty and Dark Jughead at the movies, Fugue
This was written months before we actually got a Bughead date at the Bijou onscreen :)
Riverdale was a very small town. There were only so many places to go and things to do. If you didn’t have a car, you had even less options. So, date night in Riverdale, the place to see and be seen on Saturday night, was the Bijou.
Betty and Jughead held hands as they stood in line for tickets. There was a long line for the box office that curled around the side of the building. They were about halfway there.
“You know, this offends me on a deep, personal level,” said Jughead. “We had a movie venue in town that focused on classic, important films. However, no one thought it was important to save it. Now they are running classic movies at the Bijou and selling out every single time!”
“Well, it means that you were right. Classic films are important and are good. More people are interested in them than you thought.” She gestured at the line. “Everyone is here.”
“But are they here to take in a cinematic masterpiece or are they here to make out in the back of the theatre for two hours?”
She shrugged. “Well, there is that. Maybe fifty-fifty?”
He smiled and held her hand more tightly.
After they bought their tickets, Jughead picked up a large popcorn.
“Extra butter, extra salt?” he asked.
“You remembered how I like it.”
He knew everything about Betty Cooper. Both the light and dark sides of the girl he adored. He could write the Betty Cooper Wikipedia, meticulously documented and detailed.
They walked into the main theatre and Betty stopped. To the left was the staircase up to the balcony. If you were on a date and you wanted to make out, you went to the balcony. If you were on a date, and actually wanted to watch the film, you stayed in the main, bottom seating level. Jughead had never sat in the balcony.
Betty moved down the aisle towards the front of the house, where the screen was. Jughead let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding and followed her. She sat down in the middle of the third row and settled into her seat. He sat down next to her and took her hand.
The first half of the movie went well. Jughead whispered interesting trivia about the film in her ear. She smiled at him and nodded. They held hands and ate popcorn. It was a really awesome date.
Then, someone started throwing popcorn at them. It hit their heads and shoulders and bounced.
Betty turned around. “Knock it off!”
“Hey, Cooper! You lose a bet or something?” It was Reggie Mantle. Of course, because some jock dipshit had to ruin every moment of Jughead’s already fucked up life.
“Stop it, Reggie!” Betty turned around. “Stop throwing popcorn before I come back there and slap that smug smile right off of your face!”
“Betty, please,” Jughead said. “It’s okay.”
“It’s not okay! It’s so not okay.”
Five minutes later, they were pelted with another shower of popcorn.
“This is bullshit!” Betty hissed. She got up and grabbed her jacket and her popcorn.
“Down in front!” someone yelled.
“Oh, fuck off,” she yelled back. Several people laughed.
She stood up, pushed her way to the end of the row and walked down the aisle.
Well, so much for their first official date. Jughead was disappointed but not surprised. He followed behind her. She stomped down to the fifth row and shoved her way through the line of jocks until she reached Reggie, in the dead center.
“You like popcorn, you Cro-Magnon fuckwad?” Betty said loudly. “Well, here you go!” She slammed the popcorn bucket upside down on Reggie’s head and stomped away.
“Jesus, Betty.” Betty grabbed his hand and pulled him down the aisle. At the end, she stopped. Tightening her fingers on his, she led him up to the balcony.
No one up here was watching the movie. Couples were scattered throughout the balcony, separated by a few seats in some unspoken code of pretend privacy.
She pulled him into the first row.
“I’m really sorry,” he whispered.
She turned to him and smiled. It was dark, sexy and mischievous. “I’m not. Being up here with you is going to be even better than the movie.”
She pulled his face close to hers and kissed him. It started hot and heavy and escalated from there. She was sucking face with him, deeply French kissing him with her hands shoved under his shirt. She ran her hands over his back.
“I make you hard, don’t I?” She lifted her eyebrows and smiled a very sexy smile.
“Yes,” Jughead gasped. Betty Cooper had her hand on the zipper of his jeans.
She leaned over and bit his earlobe. “Next time, I’ll make you even harder.” She gave his crotch a lingering squeeze and moved her hand back into her lap.
Ten minutes later she leaned over. “Can you get us some more popcorn, please?”
For the remainder of the movie, they held hands and talked about the film.
