As someone who is new to the Zhu Yilong Fandom I'm loving your blog!! Do you have any recommendations for Zhu Yilong historical TV shows? I know a lot of thos dramas can be hit or miss.
Sorry, nonny, this has been quite a week and I totally spaced on answering this ask. O_O
So first of all, welcome to the fandom, and I'm very glad to hear that you're enjoying my blog! ^_^
I assume by "historical" you mean anything not set in the present day? If so, I'm sorry to say that I haven't seen many. And a lot of the ones he did were early on in his career, so the production values aren't awesome and he's sometimes voiced by other people. But the other thing you have to know is that I'm REALLY not picky about my Z1L shows. I have watched some... objectively not awesome shows just because he was in them and loved them.
The one I've heard is very good and that he's amazing in is The Story of Minglan. I haven't seen it, but I've heard many people say good things about it. So maybe give that one a shot?
Some that I've seen (but mostly not finished because access reasons :P):
Bordertown Prodigal: If you like whump, this show DELIVERS. The story is fun and the other characters are great, but it's... let's just say the production values are not great and it SHOWS. Also it's not fully subbed in English.
Shaw Eleven Lang: He plays an absolute cinnamon roll of a character who gets uh... a bit burnt along the way. Has some great moments, but omg his character deserved so much better. OTZ Same issue with production values and availability of translation. :P
I know he's been in others, but I have mostly watched his modern (or nearly modern) stuff. So if anyone else wants to chime in, please feel free!
Sorry I can't be more help, nonny!

Bordertown Prodigal novel (in English)
For my fellow language-limited xiaolongbao who have been watching the wuxia Bordertown Prodigal and are either out of the English subs or are soon going to be -- I found translations of the original novel:
Bordertown Wanderer - Bian Cheng Lang Zi - by Gu Long
The bad news is, as far as I can tell from the first few chapters, the story of the TV show is like 90% original plot/romance, with only the cast of characters and the general gist the same, so I’m not sure reading the novel will help clarify what’s happening in the show.
The good news is that Ye Kai is hitting on Fu Hongxue in the first chapter:
"Since you don't drink, how about you treat me to two cups of wine?" Ye Kai said. "You want me to treat you to wine? Why is that?" Fu HongXue said.[...] "Why? Because I think that you're very pleasing to the eyes." Ye Kai let out a sigh and added, "Besides you, I don't find anyone here pleasing at all."

In Fairytale Lovers, the main couple is not creepy (the FL is a grown woman; it doesn’t look like it but the leads are actually the same age in real life) at all like in Goblin. The FL is actually the reincarnation of the ML’s past lover. I also watched The Demon Girl and the main couple has no chemistry at all. This is a drama where second lead syndrome occurs but it still is a watchable drama.
Yeah, fairyland lovers looks better in that regard! I know it has an adult FL. I also heard it had a similar plot to guardian in a good way, as far as bai yu playing multiple roles. And the multiple lives in love, and the ensemble cast (I think there’s a group). I just am not into the aesthetic they put him personally in the main role. I haven’t seen it yet though! I heard it was pretty good!
Demon Girl - i am excited to see how trainwreck this is tbh lol. Its on my practice watch list the same way Granting You A Dreamlike Life is. (if its like GYADL it may even be entertaining in a way w how much i go ???oh no??! but we’ll see...)
#replies#anonymous#ask#the only thing with fairyland lovers i got issue with before seeing is i do NOT like fluff romance#and it LOOKS fluff romance#but if i check it out and its heavier? i will be delighted#some ppl love it! i just.#like Granting You a Dreamlike Life? I watched 15 eps for Zhu Yilong#it was a Time T-T i would not have willingly ever watched it#were it not for being my chinese practice show and#having lines that just happened to be understandible to me#i was dragging myself with zhu yilongs performance#i only Might ever finish it cause i hear everything gets angsty and dark as hell AFTER ep 15#which sounds like the Dream cause i hated the 15 eps of fluff#(which if u like Zhu Yilong - To Dear Myself if a modern grounded drama that looks good#The Lost Tomb Reboot if u like dmbj. and The Shaw Eleven Land and Bordertown Prodigal if u like wuxia are options)#zhu yilong picks a lot of... fluff romances to act in... which i cant do...#demon girl - if its a fluff romance i may also BAIL#but i am curious what the fuck zhang zhehan's acting is when not in a bl?#and its time period is a saving grace since GYADL was in that period too#and it is def. something to keep me from immediately bailing#as is the demon/mutant premise#(which for Better Execution of said premise see: Bureau of Transformers. In The Flesh. )#if demon girl is fluff i may bail as well#but its gonna be a practice drama so?? no english we'll see#also: did not mean to imply fairyland lovers ML looked creepy#i just. am utterly unattracted by the mature men in businesswear look#very unattracted. shen wei got a pass cause he dresses like a man with wild fashion tastes#luo fei in Detective L gets a pass again cause its luxurious#but usually like. clean cut suburb professional dress is not my style

November Study Plan - updated 10/31/2020
Finally, my actual November Study Plan. Since the one I posted earlier this month is likely... unrealistic.
Do Listening-Reading Method a few times a week. Continue tracking the number of chapters done. I’m going to be optimistic, and aim for double what I’ve been doing (so do 20 chapters in November). Ideally, I would love to aim to finish going through 1 whole novel using the listening-reading method. Or even more than one novel. Currently planning to do l-r with: Silent Reading, TTWTADSL. Other options: SVSSS, or anything else in my queue. Another option: when walking listen to DMBJ on mtlnovel in chinese then english. Alternatively, if desired, read along like a speedrun Listening-Reading Session. Another option reading DeFrancis Chinese reader chapters, then rereading while listening to the audio - I’ll count this as a variant on l-r too. I also have decided - if I intensively read a chapter in chinese, then go through it a second time with Pleco dictate to listen to it, I’m just going to go ahead and count it in this section too.
Reading - mainly intensive reading, with some extensive reading (either rereads of old chapters, reading some easier stuff, or manhua, etc). Continue tracking number of chapters read. Currently reading:  那些風花雪月 by Gong Zi Huan Xi, TTWTADSL, random gl novels. Ideally, I would love to finish reading a novel this November! I am finally starting the list of novels recced to read, so ideally I finish 那些風花雪月 then start the next one, etc, and start working my way through them and up to priest novels. >o<)/
Listen to Chinese Spoonfed Audio in the background (as of 10/31 I’m on number 16). This has been easy to do, and so I will continue doing it.
Other immersion: continue watching Chinese shows without eng subs when desired, keep track of episodes watched. Continue listening to audiobooks as desired, no need to keep track. (In october I probably listened to 15ish audiobook chapters just on their own in the background).
Summary - big focus on listening-reading method, reading, and listening to chinese spoonfed audio files to help review/practice/consolidate information.
---
Optional activities - optional because I sincerely doubt I’ll be able to get myself to do any of them, but it would be cool if I can:
Hanzi.  Read through Alan Hoenig’s Chinese Characters - for more exposure/mnemonics for hanzi, to make remembering them in vocabulary easier. Alternatively, read through Tuttle Reading and Writing Chinese Characters - with focus on writing each hanzi according to stroke order a few times (so writing in an attempt to remember them). Alternatively, if I can focus on flashcards, continue with Mnemonics Hanzi Anki deck and continue - aiming to get to 1500 hanzi, then 2000 hanzi.
Tones and tone pairs. If I can focus on flashcards, work on progressing through my tone pair flashcards. Alternatively, if I can focus on it, go through DongChinese’s pronunciation and tone pair guide and drills.
Coursera Course. Learn Chinese from Scratch - doing this, or one of the free courses, could really solidify my active vocabulary, help me correct the grammar I use at least for simple conversations, and possibly help me at saying tones more automatically without needing to pause as much for simple conversation topics. Also this particular course is in traditional characters, so I could really solidify some common characters that are different in traditional in my mind. Alternatively - any other coursera course if I feel like it, maybe an HSK 1-5 one. Just something to really solidify what I know and fill in gaps in knowledge/correct common errors I make.
---
Novels and Shows for immersion:
Shows: Guardian (rewatch), Bureau of Transformer, Daomubiji (probably only rewatch episodes), L.O.R.D. Critical World, Xin Xiao Shi Yi Lang, Bordertown Prodigal, The King’s Avatar, Goodbye My Princess (rewatch), Ancient Detectives, The Long Night, The Bad Kids, and other things on my list.
And, in progressing difficulty, books I want to read and should be ready to read now, a la foxghost’s recommendations:
那些風花雪月 by Gong Zi Huan Xi (officially started reading this! Took 14 months of study but I’m finally here lol)
不正當關係 by Gong Zi Huan Xi (foxghost said this was the same difficulty as the story above, so I’m probably ready for this one too).
*SCI 谜案集 by ErYa (I’ve heard this somewhat easy to read, is a good story, and since its case-centered I think it would be a good intro to later reading books like Silent Reading by Priest)
龍圖案卷集  by ErYa (There is an audiobook on Ximalaya!)
黑風城戰記  by ErYa (sequel to novel above)
Then the recommendation says you should probably watch a lot of shows for some vocab (I sort of do so I’ll see how that helps me out), and you can start tackling xianxia, like Priest’s “六爻, and then 鎮魂, then 殺破狼, and pretty much any other of GZHX’s works.” I would guess this point is when Tian Ya Ke would be more my reading level, when 六爻 is, at the beginning. I would guess after 鎮魂 is when I could try to tackle Can Ci Pin. Sha Po Lang is steampunk and fantasy, so I would guess it has some of the sci fi type words - so if I’d be ready for that, I might be ready for Can Ci Pin at the same time.

Playin random on what Zhu yilong drama 2 watch:
The Shaw eleven lang - benefits: I own the book, I know hes gonna be a bad guy and that’s sexy, I’m also gay for the lead woman in this show, feels like Xena
Bordertown Prodigal - also based on a gu long novel. Zhu yilong is very hot in black and the MAIN character so theoretically more screen time, I hear he suffers pretty in a lot of this show??
Granting You A Dreamlike Life - bizarre as an entire concept, I already saw 1/3 and heard the angst and action kicks up right Past where I stopped, curious how tf this show will go. It did have a fun frenemies thing goin on.
To Dear Myself - I know I will never finish this show cause it’s too miserably sad BUT I know one sad married girl is gonna get a divorce so thank goodness I know one main character is getting through the show happier than it started ToT. Despite all the angst: zhu yilong is unbearably hot in this, like ridiculously. However also every time he’s on screen u wanna cry so. It sure is Something. Also all the actors are phenomenal it’s just... they sure are trapped in an angsty af story.
The Lost Tomb Reboot - positives it’s dmbj, good acting leads, good genre, already know I like it uvu. Downside - I still have not forgiven the shows slow pacing for some several episode chunks, or that Xiaoge once hes gone will remain gone for a while :c
Also I cannot wait for The Rebel which should be coming out this summer? Because he’ll be in another action again and that is my fave genre ;-;
Oh also: Guardian. - pros everything, except I’m reading the book rn and idk maybe I’d confuse details? Downside: I know it ends :c
