“Well, I got very drunk and did some very dumb things in the aftermath, so.” Betty gives him a rueful grin. “I can relate.”

He’s sort of dying to know what someone like Betty Cooper means by “very dumb things,” especially in that particular context, but before he can ask, the organ starts to play.

Corner of the Sky, from Pippin: Archie!!! This literally could happen anywhere at any point in time. What is this song if not Pippin going left Pippin going right. Put this wherever your heart desires. I want to come up with a Pippin musical episode plot because it’s so good. Jughead singing "Simple Joys" over a montage of Archie not dealing with his problems… I’m getting carried away.

Kind of Woman, from Pippin: Veronica would sing this in an entirely unselfaware way. I’m thinking early season two. Isn’t it a beautiful vision?

Superboy and the Invisible Girl, from Next to Normal: THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COOPERS SONG. I’m mentally rewriting the n2n episode with this being a Coopers song.

Could I Leave You?, from Follies: A timeskip Veronica and Hermione duet at their respective shitty husbands. It ends with Hermione resignedly going back to the minutiae of marriage and with Ronnie shooting Chad in the face. Don’t worry about how this messes with plot this isn’t about that.

Do You Hear the People Sing?, from Les Mis: Season six union stuff baybee! Hand in hand with "Bread and Roses". It also would be really funny to have KJ and Vanessa, who in my opinion suffer the most from iPhone Voice in the cast, to do such a grand musical-y song. It would not be very good but boy would it be entertaining.

Therapy, from Tick, Tick… Boom!: BUGHEAD DYSFUNCTION DUET YES PLEASE. Let’s say season four. "Exquisite Corpse" vibe, but suppress it all. Maybe the problem’s simply codependency!

Get This Right, from Frozen II: Okay hear me out this is one of the most stupidly romantic songs I have ever heard. An Archie song, obviously. Timeskip Varchie. Maybe he’s actually about to propose, maybe not, doesn’t matter. All that matters is how much I genuinely think KJ could have slayed this song.

Being Alive, from Company: Obviously go read Jughead’s Weird Fantasy right now if you haven’t already. But even in Riverdale canon I would want Jughead to sing this in timeskip. If we’re getting specific it feels very Tabby tucking him in after he gets too drunk at the key party. Sorry for nixing the gay subtext by putting it next to a Jabitha moment jail for a million years for me I know. It could also be after Archie calls him when he’s in NYC. There you go, gay people.

Something’s Coming, from West Side Story: Season one or seven Archie. Just feels very wholesome. I think it would be cute. Could be performed on stage if season one.

How Did We Come to This?, from The Wild Party (Lippa): A Veronica La Bonne Nuit performance that somehow becomes a group number (she’s the only one singing on stage though). Season three. No "Queenie Was A Blonde" tag. I could make an AMV to this song. I should not do that I already have three in the works. But I could.

Run Away with Me, from The Mad Ones: This is purely self-indulgent because I like on-the-road Jarchie and I have a soft spot for this mediocre musical for personal reasons. 

Suddenly Seymour, from Little Shop of Horrors: Choni! Choni forever and ever amen. Season seven, I think, when Cheryl finally accepts that she’s a lesbian and is facing homophobia from her family/society/etc. Cheryl is Audrey which is funny because “mama was poor” lol no she wasn’t. They should go all the way and get the rights to change the lyrics to Suddenly Toni. Neither Madelaine nor Vanessa has the right voice for this song even a little bit. I do not care. 

Partner in Crime, from Tuck Everlasting: Betty and Archie. In my wildest fantasies this is like a season four flashback to them as kids and we have kid Barchie sing this song but other than that I think this could be a number when they’re hooking up in timeskip. Even though I don’t approve of Barchie hooking up in timeskip because I hate straight people I do think they would slay this. KJ specifically I think would sound great on this, it’s not really a Lili song but oh well. Another version that would be incredibly funny but not as good would be having timeskip Veronica and Reggie sing it about, like, actual crime.

Totally Fucked, from Spring Awakening: Kevin-centric group number in the style of "In" or "Beautiful". Could be anywhere from seasons two to four. Maybe we include the “did you write this?” thing with Betty and Jughead as Melchior. They did some expose for some paper. You know how it is. I wish the Riverdale characters were allowed to say fuck so bad.

Moving Too Fast, from The Last Five Years: Timeskip Jughead. It almost fits but doesn’t in a way that’s oh-so-Riverdale.

The I Love You Song, from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee: Sad. Shared between Betty, Veronica, and Cheryl, but Veronica-centric (could be an unhinged La Bonne Nuit performance from her with cutaways to the other two, actually). Whenever the most amount of parents in this group are in jail. There’s at least one meaningful shot of Jughead reacting.

I’m Breaking Down, from Falsettos: Okay this one is sort of cheating because I don’t necessarily want to fit it into the actual canon of Riverdale I just think if Archie had come out in high school Veronica would have pulled a "The Ladies Who Lunch" and done this at La Bonne Nuit. I think Cami would body that.

What Is This Feeling?, from Wicked: Hear me out. Bret/Jughead duet.

For Good, from Wicked: Betty and Veronica, season seven. Or quad number in late s4/early s5 before the timeskip. I think Lili would sound gorgeous on this, especially the bridge.

Two-Player Game, from Be More Chill: Look Joe Iconis wrote music that was used in Archie: The Musical let me have this okay. Season one Jarchie. Jughead as Michael obviously even though he’s nothing like Michael and Archie is nothing like Jeremy. I just want to make Cole Sprouse say “favowite”.

Mother’s Gonna Make Things Fine, from A New Brain: I have a whole beautiful vision for an A New Brain musical episode that takes place in season four. It’s too long to get into right now but just know it’s there and it’s gorgeous and I’m going to fully flesh it out soon. Once again this is obviously an Alice song, except instead of well-meaning Jewish mom it’s overbearing evil (albeit MILFy) WASP. She’s fretting over Betty because Betty’s fretting about college or Jughead or something who cares. I just need Mädchen to do this.

Change, from A New Brain: This would happen about three quarters of the way through the episode. In classic Riverdale fashion they’d get a little insensitive with it and this would be a Ronnie La Bonne Nuit performance. Change the government kill the mayor! Say that! Even if the mayor is your parent! Especially if the mayor is your parent!

Brain Dead, from A New Brain: This is my favorite part of my A New Brain musical episode. It’s once again a Bughead repression duet. Just imagine the lavender marriage dream sequence anger tango they would do. I also think Cole Sprouse wouldn’t sound too horrible on this song. High praise. No lyric changes Jughead is saying “as the MD lifts me in his cruisy chiseled arms”. I’m getting angry about the fact that I will never get to see this on my screen I’m going to do some breathing exercises to calm down.

Take Me or Leave Me, from RENT: We’re gonna split this up among couples in classic Riverdale fashion. Timeskip, our Maureens are Kevin and Veronica, and our Joannes are Fangs and Archie. The Joannes don’t really work so maybe we’ll pull another classic Riverdale and cut their verses. Unfortunately the best line of the song (“Women, what is it about them? Can’t live with them or without them!”) has to be cut. I wish Choni could also sing this but alas it can’t work in this. Mostly this is an excuse to give Casey Cott more stuff to sing and I think it would be hilarious if he sung this.

Tango: Maureen, from RENT: Honestly, Riverdale both could and would do a really messy RENT episode. I should ruminate further on that. Anyway. I don’t actually know where or how this could work but I want it to be a weirdly sexually charged Vughead duet. But that makes Betty or Archie Maureen, and they are not Maureen… I don’t know. This one’s just in here because I like imagining Cole Sprouse dancing, and because I think Jughead is Jewish and it would be really funny to hear him say “Riverdale Jewish Community Center”. Let’s go with timeskip. She cheated! She cheated! Betty cheated! Fucking cheated! Oh, shit, could this be a Jarchie song in timeskip when Betty and Archie are hooking up? I think it could! Wow. Good work gang.

Razzle Dazzle, from Chicago: I’m also creating a beautiful Chicago musical episode that I don’t have time to detail right now but trust me it’s awesome. It’s in season four, Hermosa is relevant to it. Anyway this is another Kevin-centric group number where everyone is lying to different people about different things. Crucially, Cole Sprouse says the line “they’ll never know you’re just a bagel”.

My Own Best Friend, from Chicago: Beronica duet. Lives would be changed. They’re sort of fighting at this point in the episode so there would be an underlying current of potential hatefucking. But that’s sort of always the case with this song tbh. Also this isn’t on this playlist but imagine Reggie singing "Roxie". So bad. So good.

American Idiot, by Green Day/from American Idiot: Songs from jukebox musicals count too, right? Archie-led group number obviously. Let’s go with season six, but it could be season one or five, too. Maybe he is the faggot America. Jughead says the line “now everybody do the propaganda”. There’s a coordinated dance thing a la "Random Number Generation".

A Cockeyed Optimist, from South Pacific: Archie, duh. Season one, six, or seven. Probably sung directly to a Lodge.

Watch What Happens, from Newsies: Betty, season four. She's doing a piece on the community center that Archie and Mad Dog co-run. I think Lili would slay this honestly. I debated adding the reprise largely so that I could have Cole sing the snake line and to have an iconic "the poor guy's head is spinning" thing side note how can I make Davey and Jack about Jughead and Archie someone needs to shoot me. Anyway we'd cut the stuff about Katherine being into Jack in this song obviously because Betty is unhappily hetero with Jughead. Hashtag women in journalism.

Matchmaker, from Fiddler on the Roof: 50sdale girls. Really strong fun gay visuals exist in my brain for this one.

Alice gets a patter I don't think Mädchen would be particularly good at it but it would be extremely fun. Season seven most likely, but let's be real it could come at any point in the show.

Naughty Baby, from Crazy for You: You think I'm about to say Veronica or perhaps Cheryl don't you. WRONG Dark Betty. Oh it would be so cringe so painful so bad so terrible. It must happen. I don't know when in the show it happens it could literally be any time in s1-6.

I have actually watched both episodes...going in with no expectations I just don't feel like I care that much so whatever happens happen . I pray the CW stop sending screeners out because I wanna see the BAs lose their shit they are already doing so even with the 2/3 BA screeners telling them time after time not to worry about the BH kiss next week and basically saying VA died (I am kidding you not!) This is what one of those screeners posted: "I just saw the end of 7.02 as a victory because it put a stop to Archie chasing after V. From his POV, I felt like he was over it. But I never expected the show to outright end VA two eps in sadly" "I guess to me, Archie rejecting Veronica at the end showed where he stands and made it fairly obvious (in my eyes) which relationship is being written as the long game in this timeline. But I also get the frustration with the constant ship teases and love triangle promo"

It's so funny to see it unfold because they claimed BH died in S4 and Varchie is NO threat but yet they're out there asking questions to those 2/3 BA leaning screeners to reassure them about both Varchie and Bughead. Funny as hell!!!! And those screeners really aren't doing them any favors because they just started to dip their toes in that Comics triangle and I'd be very surprised if they didn't continue with both BA/VA actually...

I’m with you anon I am just trying to vibe through this season because hey, presumably another AU and the last one didn’t matter, so why should this one?

But screeners are the bane of my existence because at best they just overinterpret what they see and at worst it’s just like “…you freaked everyone out over something that didn’t happen?”

Just tune them out. Honestly. Even the BH positive ones, it’s all an opinion. Jesus, that screener. Even in the most VA hating, ship negative interpretation, it would be very hard to say that this was an end for VA. These are not even multiple episode problems. This could be solved in one conversation. And even the non VA screeners admit that they’re in 703. Promo says they’re in 705. So like….I don’t really see this as the end of VA?

And the screeners and BAs in general will swear up and down this is so good for BA, they feel so good about BA….few things we’re ignoring here, my darlings. Lili saying she has made out with everyone, the way this show ALWAYS leans VA, the way this show has had seven literal years to really take BA seriously and never has and now putting them in a triangle? I don’t know if I’d be so confident 😂

Do you think bughead will ever come back? Or do you think the writers (and the fallout of c and l's break up) fucked it up and it's dead? especially with jt being very loved (giving me arch*se vibes) and coming back by the end of the season?

i have no idea what to think about bh. i always feel like they'll come back unexpectedly but there's definitely no story for them right now and there's also a clear problem about the two of them working together since things they could be giving to bh, they're giving to other ships. so i mean, i guess hope springs eternal but i don't think the 50s are being written for who ships them. as for what's gonna happen post-50s, that's incognito.

it truly sucks how this entire thing unfolded for bh, especially when there was a clear story back in s5. well.

Where did the idea come from where the 50s was made by Ras with the only purpose to write Barchie out of existence. No other reason for the plot but making Barchie go away. Pete said it on the podcast and I’ve seen other Bughead fans say it. Isn’t that a little naive to how writers would make decisions. With the comics vibes I don’t get how Barchie would be removed either.

Barchie is always going to be baked into the premise of the show, just like Varchie? I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but even with the show going in different directions and finding its own plots, couples and voices, they'll always want to play with all the toys in the box.

So after watching the episode, i was lost.

But here’s my take on it:

The whole season 6 “Dale” universe was simply because Vale Jughead still loves Betty (gonna ignore him saying he wanted to save Archie too.) and the fact that he called her to save her from the bomb explosion is the fact that Vale is dripping into Dale as they said- that’s a crumb that i’d like to take and cry over.

Betty isn’t ready to admit she still loves Jughead as well, I’m assuming because she’s with Archie and doesn’t wanna hurt his feelings (?), but polly is all wrong cause she never fell out of love with him.

Now we just need her confession to Jughead about how bad she feels about betraying him back in high school and regretting that kiss with Dumbass red head.

i think it's weird people expect betty to offer up her feelings all of the time...she took 6 episodes to even ask if she and archie were dating.😭 and even then, did she only do it because of the pregnancy scare? she never even told archie she saw her own aura, right? lots of vague, "i'm evil, i just know it" and in the end, her dead jesus-sister had to do some sort of weird absolving (god this storyline is stupid) just to make her think she wasn't damn near the devil himself.

polly is creepy to me tho. i dunno what it is about her like this? it's a vibe. but then again, polly is pretty cult-y and those are vibes i really don't mesh with tbh. kevin tho...sign him up.

and yeah, everyone but bughead has talked about their past. they really should. but you know, i'm gonna give the girl some grace when there's 3 jugheads and an apocalypse on the way.

you guys, i am obsessed. this is an incredibly well-written s1 rewrite, with a twist on the mystery that i've never seen before, and impeccable Bughead investigative duo slowly falling for each other vibes. oh, and there's actual FRIENDSHIP. the fact that we're getting this story while the absolute disaster that is s7 is airing kind of blows my mind? but it's truly a balm to my soul lol

Always interesting to see how others interpret the show because I don't get aroace vibes from Betty at all and now I'm thinking about demi Jughead. Hmm???

my thing with betty is that I think she's never really been happy in a relationship before, and that while she thinks she wants romance, she actually doesn't. Ive talked before about my thoughts on bughead and barchie, but I think betty finds a lot of comfort in things that make her feel "normal", and that's why she's gravitated a lot towards archie in recent seasons. her relationship with archie is the "perfect" american couple, and while she knows she doesn't want a white picket fence house with two and a half kids, she likes that archie does, because leaning on his dream of a nuclear family helps her cope with her own feelings toward relationships. betty also uses sex as a coping mechanism a lot. it feels less like she's having sex because she enjoys it, and more like she's doing it as a form of escapism, either using it as an outlet for her darker urges (dark betty) or using it as a way to distract from the bigger issues at hand (like when she and jughead tried to talk about the barcheating scandal in s4/5, but she visibly got overwhelmed and used sex as a way of both apologizing to jughead and distracting herself from her guilt). to me, betty seems happiest when she gets space to be alone. she doesn't want to a wife or a mother. and she uses relationships as a way of avoiding any part of herself that she is scared of. she resorts to romance/sex because she's afraid of her inner darkness, afraid of what she does and doesn't want for herself in the future, and afraid of the fact that she doesn't crave a "normal" love-life or "normal" family dynamic. she's always had trouble confronting the parts of herself she doesn't fully understand, and I think her sexuality is apart of that. but yeah. that's basically why I view betty as aroace.

the extended promo is setting up bughead endgame if anything. we already have them as the only two who remember and a ton of scenes of them alone. lili and cole were also the last to wrap, they most definitely have the most one on one scenes of anyone in the episode. the barchie holding each other’s faces and crying scene has all the vibes of a “what we had was beautiful blah blah goodbye”. it’s just very obviously bughead.

i mean i just disagree innit. someone on twitter said that jughead is probably an angel/whatever guiding betty through her memories which makes perfect sense to me bughead hasn't had any genuine attempt at getting back together since. season 5 betty this season has been set up with a few people none of which are jughead and jughead is last seen dating veronica and kissing tabitha i would be VERY surprised if bughead happened. although of course roberto can always kick me one last time while i'm down

I love how ba's are immediately getting pissed about the trailer and run to their biased screener to get confirmation again that this kiss doesn't mean anything. Hell. Even as a bughead I know it won't mean anything and that it's just stupid bait. They scream so loud about bh being dead but as soon as they share the screen, the screener needs to tell them 3 times that it's not a big deal. Insecurity is a bad look on them LOL

Look, as a BH, I am fully aware it's bait, will probably be a short scene and I don't expect that thread to be picked up in the 50s. I don't need a screener to tell me that. My expectations are well managed. I don't think they could say the same.

As I've said, I expect nothing of BH in the 50s and with the very comics vibe they're going with, I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to take any 50s ship seriously, save for maybe Choni and if the triangle keeps leaning VA, maybe them. Otherwise? It's just an excuse to be ~aesthetic and for Roberto to play with his Archie dolly some more.

I am just here to collect my endgame, and I sense that's out of the 50s arc. I am just here to laugh at the show and have no expectations, but I doubt they could say the same.

Can I go hang myself now? Or should we pray for Bughead some more? Not that that makes a difference at this point I guess.

The only positive side I can think of is that it's giving Married Life with Archie vibes so... maybe the table will turn and Varchie might get the upper hand in the end. But as for Bughead... mh... I don't know...
