Hello! So, sorry if this is really dumb but I've been really wanting to get into writing fanfiction for haikyuu and I'm just,,terrified of miswriting characters??? Any advice? Do you know anyone who could help me and possibly beta read for me and tell me what to fix with characrerzation? Sorry if this is dumb ahhh
hi! oh my gosh i’m so glad you’re getting into writing for haikyuu, it’s such a lovely show and there’s a large cast of characters that can each add something different to your stories.
it’s not a dumb question at all! haikyuu is a really character driven show so writing for it can be super intimidating, but as far as characterization goes, here’s the advice i can give you:
knowing what drives the your characters is key.
for instance hinata is driven by his desire to be the last one standing, to be the best and prove people wrong about their assumptions regarding his height. from there you can translate that into whatever fic or au you might be writing. is he a police officer? have people assume he’s incapable because of his appearance or personality and let him work to overcome that.
characters like oikawa, daishou, and in a slightly different way, tsukishima, are harder to write to me. they have what i like to call a “public personality” and a “private personality”. so while oikawa appears petty and insufferable to the general public, he uses that to cover up feelings of incompetence. he’s genuinely a hard worker. once you figure out why they present different to outsiders, you’re golden.
and then you have the obscure side characters that only have 2.3956 seconds of screen time. they’re a blessing and a curse. they don’t really have much source content to reference, so you have more wiggle room with characterization, but it’s hard to get a grip on who they are.
in almost all cases, i recommend reading the character’s wiki as a quick cheat sheet, and reading other fics about the character to see how authors you like tend to write them. that being said, take liberties! if you want to change a character a little bit, go for it. maybe it’ll change the way your readers think of them. and if you go too far and really mischaracterize someone, then oh well! we all do it sometimes!
when it comes to beta readers, if you ever need help, feel free to DM me! i’d love to help, sometimes getting a second opinion is really helpful!
i’m gonna tag some of my friends and favorite fic authors, so any of them can give you advice. they’ve all taught me a lot so hopefully they can help you too!

Thank You!!!
So today, I reached 50 followers. That might not seem like a lot, but 50 of you decided you liked my blog enough to see more of it, and that means the world to me. To celebrate, I decided to thank some of the people who have helped me along my (admittedly short) journey.
Some of these blogs are people I’m starting to consider friends, others are blogs I go to for inspiration. Either way, thank you.
Fan Artists
From funny comics to breathtaking sketches, these talented folk are what I aspire to be.

These crazy fools manage to do both art and writing. They’re all forces of nature and hold too much power. I fear them. (JK, but seriously, I love these multitalented icons)

Unfortunately, the problem with posts like this is that I can’t list everybody. Also, to avoid anything that could be considered spam, I tried to keep my list short. (Otherwise, I’d end up tagging the whole fandom.) So if you’re not on here, I’m sorry!!!
To the lovely people in the Haikyuu Creators’ Network discord:
I tagged many of you. I could have (read: should have) tagged all of you. You all give me ideas and keep me going even if we haven’t spoken a whole lot. (I’m a little shy sometimes, sorry.) Thank you for fueling my creativity. ily.
If you haven’t heard of a few of the blogs on this list, feel free to check them out! They’re all some of my favorites!
Thank you all,
Yana
