O Parque está dotado das mais variadas estruturas como um lago, court de ténis, coreto, casa de chá e esplanada, encontrando-se em toda a sua área diversos trabalhos de escultura, dando também acesso a outro dos maiores pontos de interesse das…

Breaking the Rules in Caldas da Rainha
Solo Traveling Rules:
Do not make yourself a mark
Don't carry around your luggage unless you have to. Get from one place to another and drop it off. Not just because it's annoying, but because you are declaring to the entire world that you are not from there.
2. Do not become an easy target
If you are going from bus station to lodging, you are on a mission. If wait some place with your bag, you are an easy target for anyone to prey on you.
3. Do not isolate yourself
If you are by yourself, clearly traveling, you will be attacked in some fashion.
My trip to Caldas da Rainha, I did all three.
Not because I wanted to, but because I had to.
Tumblr media
Óbidos doesn't connect anywhere. There is a bus station and a train station, but looking up transportation journeys will get you a big, fat, not-in-existence white screen of frustration -- because Óbidos is not the hub. Caldas da Rainha is. This fact took me a while to figure out when I was researching details for my trip and made me think I was going to have to drop Óbidos simply because I couldn't figure out how to leave. Once I figured out the detail of going to Caldas first, I had all the options in the world.
The original plan was just to switch buses in Caldas. Then I learned that Caldas da Rainha is a Portuguese spa town. Actual thought process: Portuguese Spa Town?! I love Czech Spa Towns! Must go!
And so I went. Solely based on...nothing really. And because I was mid-connection, I had to bring everything with me.

Caldas was amazing and I wish I had had more time there to actually explore instead of quick wanderings to scope out some church architecture, a market, and a park -- with a big backpack attached to me. I paused in the market for a bit of a rest, not really needing to hurry, but wanting to get my highlight, the main reason I wanted to visit Caldas: the old hospital in Parque Dom Carlos I. I wanted to sit on a bench and sketch.
While breaking rules 1-3.
Which is why I ended up in a long, primarily one-sided conversation with Miguel about some sort of business he was trying to get to take off in America revolving around being your best self.
Tumblr media
I had been minding my own business, frustrated at how much my brain was hurting trying to sketch again after a year of left-brain dominated strategizing trying to survive teaching high school. I was enjoying swimming turtles, getting excited about seeing black swans (like actual black swans!), wondering why I was excited about seeing black swans (like actual black swans!), and just relaxing. Truly relaxing for the first time in, again, a year. And who comes and asks if the other half of the bench is open? Miguel.
Tumblr media
I begrudgingly let him sit, waiting for him to engage in some sort of nonsense. I knew it was coming as he walked up and spoke to me in English immediately. I was in a public place, and it was the prime "take a photo of the hospital" location, so people were milling around. I knew I wasn't actually in danger and had a pretty good eye on all my belongings. As he started his spiel, I indulged him for a bit until my "play nice in the sandbox" skills were used up and I settled for polite grunts and nods while trying to finish my sketch. I had another bus to catch after all -- plus, with how far all my artistic skills seemed to be smashed into the back of my skull, my brain was actually in pain trying to sketch this hospital. I didn't have capacity to deal with Miguel and his nonsense.
Thankfully, it didn't take him too long to acknowledge that I wasn't going to be getting involved in his best self business, and away he went. Ugh, this is why we don't break the rules.
Tumblr media
And now my future thought process will be [new country] spa town?! I love Czech and Portuguese spa towns. Must go.
