Rhapsody for Lovers is a music-themed Hetalia ship zine. All works in the zine can be one or more of the following: 

- based off a song - based off a classical or jazz piece - inspired by a musical - AU such as band members, marching band members, orchestra members, ect.  - anything you can think of that's centered on music! 

Shipping works will be encouraged but are not strictly required. Contributors must pick from a list of preapproved ships, other ships may be permitted with moderator approval. This list includes: ItaPan, FrUK, RusAme, Germano, PruAus, Spamano, DenNor, RoChu, and RomeChu.

This will be a for-profit zine, all proceeds will go towards a fund for student music lessons/a scholarship for a local summer music camp (if we get enough proceeds, the camp is a bit expensive lol). The fund or scholarship will be in honor of my student who passed away in January of this year, so this is a very personal project for me. Contributor Applications open in 3 weeks on April 1st! I'm going to try to write this thought out properly.

I saw a post comment with someone saying that jazz doesn't count as American culture because it was created by a mistreated minority (ie. African Americans).

Which, look, you wanna go up to a black person on any random US street and tell them they don't count as American, you're as racist as the Dred Scott case.

I don't believe that America and Canada, as personifications of their peoples, represent only the "White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestants". Both are diverse countries with a long history of immigration, not to mention the many indigenous peoples that inhabited the land before they came into existence as countries.

Have these minorities been treated awfully? Yes. But I believe that America and Canada as personifications have suffered for it. The abuse we have heaped in each other is to our detriment as a people and a nation. And to our Nations as well. Because I don't believe either Al nor Matt represent only the white European culture. They are also representative of an Navajo child stolen from his family and forced into a Reservation school, a black girl who is spat at for trying to drink out of the Whites-only water fountain, an Japanese family in an internment camp, and a Mexican one forcibly separated at the border. They have been hurt, and hurt themselves. They have been taught to hate parts of themselves, but that part is still there.

I like to think that as time has past and we as a people have grown (somewhat anyways), so have they. When I think of our Hetalia America and Canada, I think there is potential there to explore. With all Nations of course, in different ways. But I always enjoy seeing the North America brothers depicted as more than just a mush of co-opted British/European culture. I love AU versions of them as mixed race as well, and wish it was depicted more often.

If that makes any sense....

sweden is a long flowy skirts+dresses farmers market type. half her head is shaved and she has a sleeve of tattoos. used to be a serious businesswoman in stockholm (or portland but dont think about the setting too hard) but now she just wants to live in the woods (she fell for the cottagecore pintrest aesthetic and blew up her life to have it). shes the pov main character in my imagination bc shes relatively new to the land

finland is a SHORT FAT BUTCH !!!!!!!!!!!! she is ADORABLE and SOOOO NICE and HELPFUL TO EVERYONE!!!!! shes got practical skills for running life off the grid and is an excellent handywoman and ms sweden is head over heels for her on sight. finland might b a permanent resident / own the land. running this low tech summer camp for wayward lesbians is her lifelong dream and SHES LIVIN IT BABY

Denmark is obv a basketball shorts + growing out a buzzcut messy type. loud, rubs people the wrong way easily but is well intentioned. brings practical skills to the land too (shes a tradeswoman). literally just canon denmark but with more lesbian swag. shes here bc she loves women but started coming to support her ex-wife/current gf eternal situationship ->

norway is a dianic mother goddess earth worshipper type and the land's high priestess. (everyone else buys into the lesbian religion stuff at different levels ex. fin thinks its important, den doesnt quite get it). other than that shes a millennial skinny jeans sidepart collects way too many plushies type. still says heccin doggo and such. super skinny very pretty not very expressive (she is possibly tripping at any given time. its a religious practice ok she Needs more weed shrooms lsd Right Now). her brain is a little fried but maybe she was always like this. outside this she struggles to keep employment or not maybe shes doing something or has a witchcraft etsy shop i dont know tbh. she can do whatever she wants bc shes a trust fund baby.

iceland is 16 and the result of norways teen pregnancy. shes been coming to the land as long as she can remember, may or may not even be gay, and is going through a Euphoric Atheist phase both genuinely and because it pisses mom off (ice is one of the few who can even tell when nor is pissed off). shes in online high school and her only friends her age are also online. den is her stepmom kind of and the only one who Gets Her... ugh... flips hair

Oh I would be HAPPY to lmao

So scotpru (for me) started because of a gereng rp I did with a friend ages ago that had both Gilbert and Alasdair as characters.

Keep in mind I'm not much on the historical side of hetalia so I can't speak on reasons to ship them re: concrete historical potential trading or connections the people may have had.

BUT, that being said, when it comes to nationverse, Gilbert and Alasdair both are somewhat older nations who have seen and experienced a lot of the world. They have quite a rough (and often annoying) exterior to their younger brothers, but at the same time have a genuine and warmhearted love for certain cultural aspects that they cultivate and put pride in. Both share a love of handcrafted pieces, whether they're old engraved weapons or woodworked furniture or illuminated manuscripts, they put value in creating something yourself and putting in the time and effort to learn that skill.

In my eyes, they connect via old tales of the world and the other nations when they were younger, as well as clashing in the kitchen in a positive, poking fun kind of way. Scotland cooks more often, Prussia bakes more often (which Scotland doesn't complain about at all, who would when they're getting served sweets?)- though Scotland's cooking style is much messier and "intuition" based versus Prussia's meticulous recipe notes and measuring and cleaning practices. And oh, they love to work on projects together that can utilize both their strengths- it's kind of one of their love languages in a way.

Also, Scotland's voice matches Prussia's flute perfectly, and both of them adore hearing the other play. It's soothing. They love the outdoors and often go camping or out on daytrips into the countryside where no one else will hear them play together, like a personal little show they put on for their ears only.

Beyond concrete interests that are similar, Alasdair and Gil also seek out each other in the sense that, because they have these sorts of connections with each other, they can find comfort in each other. They know how the other grew up, they've seen them grow and change over the years. They don't have to put on the strong unaffected persona with each other when they're alone. Gilbert appreciates that Alasdair doesn't treat him any different after being dissolved- doesn't look at him with barely-held back pity and annoyance. And Scotland knows that despite being the eldest and supposedly having all his shit together, when he feels like everything is falling apart he can come to Gilbert, who will put aside his usually abrasive front to welcome Alasdair with open arms. They learn to open up emotionally and trust each other. Neither are the best with words, though Alasdair is worse imo, and so they're able to pick up on each other's nonverbal cues and signs of affection that others might not note. And I do just like Gilbert's explosive energy next to Alasdair's slightly more laid-back vibes.

I feel like it's one of those relationships where neither actually said "I love you" for a very long time, it was just mutually understood that they shared a bond with each other that they didn't feel with anyone else.

Humanverse and other aus have similar notes to them- in my mind they often meet at say, a bar or pub, or even perhaps at daycare while dropping of their siblings depending on the au, and begin connections through some mix of love of history, music, baking and cooking, crafting, and/or just the fact that both can often feel like outsiders in their current community, and said relations bloom from there.

Anyway I love them so so much and I hope this messily-worded collection of thoughts helps convey why ehee

I got tagged by @zyrafowe-sny, thank you for the tag! This was fun! I wrote the answers at like 5 am sorry if they're rambly and unhinged haha.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

13, but really 7, because all but one of them are Finnish and English language versions of the same stories sjdfnasdfj

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Well,,, the fandoms I’ve published fic for are Hetalia (kringelis krongelis i know) and The Owl House, but when you add WIPs there’s also the Mandalorian, Noragami, and BNHA, and there USED to be HTTYD and GNG as well. Yeah the last one is the old anime where dogs fight bears. What can I say it’s really popular in Finland, Hopeanuoli 4ever

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

hands, grasping (the one TOH fic so no surprise there), Six Sunflowers (which is the oldest), Traitor’s Glory, Two Boys, Two Moments in Time, and lastly December 30th, 1929. 

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I mean I do try! When I leave comments it’s always nice to get answers, so I think it’s just nice to answer others. :) I do have some comments atm I’ve not answered but. Well. Just look at my url lmao

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

LMAO. I have no idea. I’m just going by the published ones here, but like: character seemingly falls to his death, character finds his mom’s dead on his 9th birthday and is left with his two other underage siblings to fend for themselves in the 1930s ussr, character resigns himself to the fact that his siblings probably hate him as he’s starving to death in a prison camp. Which one’s the angstiest? You choose!!

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Lmaooo well none of them are really _happy_, uh. I think Laid Down By Human Hands has probably the most neutral ending, whereas Six Sunflowers is more bittersweet, but like the sweet is there… And then Two Boys isn’t terrible either? Like it sucks a little cuz that kid’s living in WWII time Finland ya know, but it’s _fine_. I dunno! In truth it’s probably the fic on anon that’s the least terrible, but even that ending’s not a _happy_ one, it’s got unrequited pining in it lol.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nope! So far at least! I don’t think my fics are popular enough to get it haha.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope! I’m almost strictly a gen writer, aside from like. 2 AUs and one TOH wip. I guess some of the WIPs could potentially and maybe should have some fade to black kinda scenes because they’re stories involving a fair amount of romance and in one of them it’s even kind of relevant to the plot. But yeah no. 

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

WELL, okay. You see, I actually started out writing via original fiction? I was like 12 when I made up a story based on a long-lasting play-pretend during recess thing I had going on with my dear friend, and it was. Written and plotted by a 12-year-old. But THEN I got really into the How To Train Your Dragon movies, and then I crossed over my story and HTTYD and then tried (still kinda low-key sorta in the process of) to separate it into my original story again, but this time with dragons! So that’s. Like the craziest journey ahfijsd my original as-of-yet unwritten fantasy story has a crossover sequel with HTTYD lmao. Also just occasionally I think about a potential giant crossover that’s got allllll my faves meeting and interacting, but that’s solely for daydreaming and “lmao wouldn’t it be funny if” -scenarios in my head. I’ve later also crossed the characters from my original story with other ones I’ve liked, in my head lol, but I don’t think I’ve written out any. Other than the TT x HTTYD hybrid. (TT is the WIP name for that original story. it doesn’t stand for anything anymore tho lmao it’s just tt)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nope! Not to my knowledge, at least! Again, my fics don’t get enough hits/are too niche for anyone to think about stealing them, I imagine. 

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah! Almost all of them! By me. What can I say, I try to fight the good fight to keep my native language alive on the internet and also in my head. 

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. I did once talk about the possibility with a friend, but nothing ever came out of it. 

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Hhhh. This is very silly but I don’t really actively ship stuff, and rarely think of ships outside of when I’m watching or reading the source material or something. Thus the one I can feel confident in saying I ship is a…. oc x canon ship sshfskjfsidkfajksaf or maybe it’d be more accurate to say oc x mutated blorbo version of a canon character lmao. It’s mainly in. 2 AUs that have so little to do with the source material that they might as well be original fiction and probably by this point mostly are lol. 

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

GHHH I want to finish ALL of my big 5 main WIPs because I love them dearly and want to read them, but then again. I don’t know if I ever will because I can’t get myself to fuckin WRITE any of them. So I’m just gonna say all of my main WIPs. That is:

TT (original fantasy story thing)

home front fic (historical fic set in WWII Finland about the friendship between a kid and the soviet POW sent to work on his home farm)

Kingdom AU (girl from the country accidentally befriends the crown prince and there’s politics and they fall in love and some cool stuff and some less cool stuff happens. hard to summarize cuz i’ve never had to, target demographic is like. three people + me. here's the aesthetics and vibe blog it's got)

sad BNHA fic (what if. Eri got ofa. but how? i murder someone to haunt the narrative. easy. sad. sad bnha fd. naming skills on full display here) 

anddddd. hypothetical TOH fic (what if i came up with what happens after TTT before the two other eps of s3 came out and stayed on that path. what if the first thing i wrote about it was hunter falling off a cliff to his death. what then).

Kind of also TOH fic 3 (it’s about evelynnnnn) but that one is. Hopefully. Shorter and has the outline all written out so there’s a bigger likelihood of me finishing it someday. And to be fair the hypothetical TOH fic isn’t that long either, I could get it done, one day, but then the other ones have grown to massive size plotwise so I don’t know if I could ever get them done, actually. 16. What are your writing strengths?

I guess my plots are sometimes kinda good? Sad BNHA fic and Kingdom AU are pretty cool on that side. I used to be pretty good at writing dialogue too, but that was back when I a) wrote regularly, b) read a lot, and c) socialized. So. But I used to be good! though back then my plots were real frickin weird lol. in my defense. i was 14 to 17.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Writing itself. That’s the only answer I’ve got because recently I haven’t written enough to know what I’d be bad at. So just. Writing. See I can plot without writing, that’s why I’m good at that lmao

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Sure! Hell yeah! I’m gonna do that! I have done that! I love it, I love languages. Though translations are appreciated. Though I think it should be for emphasis, more so than just writing it in the language just for the hell of it (though like I had a wip where all the spoken dialogue was to be in Russian because there was so little of it and it was simple enough that I could do that, but i lost my notes for it). I think if it’s just normal dialogue and the pov character knows the language, it’s best to just add like, “they said in Finnish” to the dialogue tag, especially if there’s a lot of it. 

In my personal opinion, also when the character doesn’t know the language, I probably wouldn’t write it out? But then if a character knew the basics of the language and it was maybe one sentence I would write it in the language. Or if it was a really important line, like someone telling another character they love them in their native language, or a culturally significant thing, like, idk the adoption vow in mando'a in the Star Wars universe. But sometimes it’s also just fun to show off your own language skills! So overall, strongly encouraged. Just. Try not to use Google Translate (etc.) for it jfajfasjdn

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Hhooo. Probably the Ginga-fandom, but that one was so brief it barely counts, so I’ll say HTTYD because of the crossover thing. If it’s just fanfic without crossing it over with my own original work lol then Hetalia. 

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

TRAITOR’S GLORY!!!!!! I got to talk about my rather niche but intense area of interest in it, which is Soviet POWs in Finland during the Continuation War 1941-1944. Well, that’s the finished one at least, there are some snippets of WIPs I’ve not posted nor finished that are also very good. Imo. But. Yeah. Most of the other favourite stuff I have, concerning my fics, hasn’t been written. So. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But Traitor’s Glory is pretty nice. :)  Thanks again for the tag! this might sound random but im pretty new to the fandom and canon gave me an unexplainable ick but I wanna check out the fanon stuff! is there any creators with certain ocs or different interpretations of the characters you really like or even just know of?? Even ask blogs! especially ones for the minor characters

First of all welcome fandom

I completely understand that. Canon at certain points gives me icks too. I almost even put down the series when starting out because of it. Luckily most fans just pick and choose from canon.I primarily follow creators that make cute stuff and explore the whole human side to nationhood (like me!)

sunnylolli-> they've got some great England headcanons. They've said they don't keep up with canon too closely. There are some historical stuff, but mainly its cute family stuff with dad England at the center. But there is also some fruk and Pruden there as well. Hightly recommend reading their fic Can I Stay for a Year or Two. Very well paced healing journey between America and England as well as America just healing in general because he's having a hard time.

balladofthewhitehorse-> great GerEng and Engport stuff. I don't think they ever actually read the series but their works have similar vibes to the way I interpret the Hetalia characters.

If you like GerEng or are at least open to it, I highly suggest Teethhoarder and their blog asking-gereng-> since they're working with a rarepair they've had to diverge from canon quite a bit. They have such a soft style and their depiction of GerEng has very much influenced my own depiction of the ship, specifically Teeth's depiction of Ludwig.

Ashafox-> A lot of wonderful Canada art. As a Canadian they're one of my favourite Canada artists. I don't know if this accurately goes along with the "different interpretations" you were looking for, but they have some 10/10 aus that I highly suggest checking out. My favourite has got to be their au where England is a vampire and ends up taking in two werewolf pups (America and Canada).

frukmerunning and their side blog ask-aph-axis-> they're so funny and I love how they characterize Japan. Don't let their ask blog name deter you, its only called that because they focus on the dynamic of Germany, Italy and Japan as friends (though itapan is going to/has gotten together).

I hope you answered your question. I don't know if this counts as different interpretations, but I tried to gather creators I love who either don't consult canon or have used canon as a jumping off point and expanded on the characters.

Personally, I'm in the camp where I use canon as a jumping off point. Keep only what inspires me and fill in the rest with my knowledge on history, other interpretations I like, and my own ideas. That's the amazing thing about the Hetalia fandom, we really have made it our own, so I hope you can find something you like anon and have a good time here.

What are your best and worst memories of the fandom?

Oooooh Anon, this is a really good question

I’ll start with good first, because I have more of those

My best memories of the early fandom are honestly how creative and vibrant it was. Like, I cannot begin to describe what it was like. You’d refresh the page on FFnet and there would be two pages of new stories already. Deviant Art was flooded with images and memes (terrible ones, but still), Ao3 was still new and barren but even that was going. Facebook pages, askblogs (so MANY askblogs), and then, my favourite of all, the Kinkmeme

There were bad things on the Kinkmeme, anonymity does tend to bring out the extremes of everything, after all, but the concept of it was so good. You write a request, as people do to writers/ artists on tumblr these days, but it was like a pin on a noticeboard for anyone to see. A curious author would then come along and fill it if they wanted and both parties could stay in secret if they chose, or they could de-anon. You could find whole multichapter stories and sagas and you might have no idea who the author was and you could ask for anything without shame. You might even get several fills of the same story if it was a popular concept!

It was also not only without shame because you were anon, but without shame because that was the culture of the internet back then. Anything went, no matter what it was, and there was a good understanding of ‘Don’t Like Don’t Read’ which meant people didn't argue so much (in relation to how many people there were in the fandom, I mean. People still very much did argue, but they were the minority from what I remember)

This mean that the stories in the Kinkmeme specifically, but the whole fandom in general, was so wacky, the AUs were so so damn out there and the idea of each character wasn’t so fixed and rigid as it is now. The stories you got were unique in content, characterisation, tone, mood- everything! And if you went your own way with things there were bound to be people there who found you and liked your stuff

I love how free early fandom was and how busy, with people bouncing off of each other, and I miss very much that liveliness and energy

Now, for the bad

I’m very lucky in that I didn’t see that much bad stuff, most likely because I lurked in the background of it all- putting out a few stories and chatting to people on FFnet (bless its little cotton socks) but otherwise not really engaging with fandom. So, I don’t have the bad memories that other more active veterans do/ did: people gatekeeping ideas or bullying people out of spaces when their ideas clashed. Nor do I see the Kinkmeme as a bad thing, again I’m a big advocate of Don’t Like Don’t Read so I never took racist Nazi fic seriously- it was fic and it wasn't for me. But I knew it was there and I knew people got over zealous with it and I knew that patriotism and discovering more about your nation did lead to a lot of fans shoving their way into spaces they didn’t belong, talking over quieter, minority voices and misunderstanding, or refusing, to learn and listen

So, with all of that out of the way, my personal worst memories are also how busy it was. It was too busy, where stories or art that you worked so hard on would get swallowed up and lost to the void, the opposite of now. Hetalia as a fandom also has a terrible, ongoing habit of flocking to bigger names and then camping there, rather than give newer, smaller creators a chance. There were big name authors, fans and artists who everyone knew, stories that even today people know of and quote, (Gutters, anyone? I hated it) but there were far more brilliantly written (something better) stories that are lost to time amongst it all.

Which is very sad. Even today that work doesn’t get recognition because they're buried somewhere. People go back to the work that's left a fandom impact rather than dig (which, considering the size of Hetalia's ancient husk on the internet, is understandable) and there are fewer older folks about to remember them

At the time I found this very frustrating and it killed my motivation frequently, and as I didn’t have many fandom friends I felt quite alone amongst it all. But this is a very small bad memory compared to some of the horror stories I either heard about at the time or learnt of many years later, so I think I got off quite lightly! And overall, I've always had good memories of this fandom

Maybe that’s why I’m still here hahaha, I was always able to keep my love for the core fandom concept intact but not getting to close to it when it was actively spiteful and on fire

I’m feeling cryptic today so here’s some vaguely concerning crumbs of Jacen lore that y’all may or may not already know (and that I will be providing no explanation for):

Smoked weed for the first time in my life on my best friend’s couch while watching Twilight and almost choked to death on a gummy worm

Broke my nose playing frisbee on a backpacking trip but didn’t go to the hospital because my dad said it was “fine”

Got chased and nearly trampled by moose on at least 10 separate occasions

Had a mental breakdown while driving my car to Losing Face by Wilbur Soot after being kicked from my high school track team because I was too mentally ill to get a passing grade in 4/6 of my classes

Almost got shot in the foot with a .45 by my little brother

On that note, I have pretty decent experience with both firearms and archery

Ate random mushrooms I found outside and didn’t die

Showed up to my aggressively conservative Christian midwestern family reunion dressed like a gay suburban dad on vacation

Rode my bike down a very steep boulder-covered embankment as a child and somehow came out completely unscathed

Got lost at a car show at like 7 years old and sobbed hysterically behind the wheel of a ‘67 Impala while being comforted by a very large biker guy in all leather who looked like hulk hogan but with a mohawk

Got chased by a bear

Had my car heater break in the middle of a blizzard and drove home shivering and cursing out my father while reaching over the wheel every five minutes to scrape frost off the windshield so I could see

Cut open my lip with my canine teeth

Tried to do a flip on a trampoline and broke my nose (again)

Cosplayed a Hetalia character for Halloween in middle school and got mad when no one knew who I was

Fainted while getting out of the shower and put a dent in the fucking towel bar on the way down

Gave all of the counselors at my summer camp warrior cat names

Almost got hit by a train

Had my deadname misspelled in a German newspaper

Had a bird shit directly on my head at an aviary as a child

Almost got twerked on by a heavily intoxicated middle-aged woman at a Glass Animals concert

Almost got trapped in Canada

Almost got stabbed by an actual crackhead while at a therapy appointment

Hiked two miles hauling three whole, still twitching silver salmon on a line over my shoulder at thirteen years old

Got woken up at 6:30 in the morning by my grandpa blasting heavy metal music throughout the house

Ran my cross-country regionals in two inches of snow while wearing the standard uniform (a singlet and the athletic equivalent of booty shorts) and almost got hypothermia

Tried to romance a male NPC (while playing a male character) in DND while my aggressively heterosexual father was DMing

Accidentally skied off a 15-foot cliff (and once again came out completely unscathed)

Tripped over the curb on the way to my cross-country running practice and almost shattered my kneecap

Edited a friend’s Lord Of The Flies high school AU fanfiction
