Sydney: The Rocks

After taking the light rail up from Haymarket, I went for a wander around The Rocks, a preserved historic part of Sydney's city centre.

From Campbells Cove you get a good view back towards Circular Quay and the skyscrapers behind.

A lot of people find The Rocks too touristy to be enjoyable, and while I agree there is a commercialised touristy core, there's also plenty of streets away from that with a historic charm + great views.

I continued up from the shoreline to Observatory Hill, an underrated viewpoint in Sydney, in my opinion.

The sheer size of the Crown Towers in Barangaroo is evident from here.

With looming rain clouds I made it down to Barangaroo for the next part of my walk.

THE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL - SPRING EVENT

The blossoms are blooming and, with the start of Spring, Town Hall has decided to put on Lunar Cove’s very first Blossom Festival. The event will kick off on Friday, April 14th, strategically occurring outside of any National Holiday given how the Catalyst has a tendency to attack on them and plenty of security measures are being put into place to ensure the event kicks off without a hitch. But, we need your help!

CALLING ALL PLAYERS 

We will be having two different discord “chatzy style” IC parties as part of this event, so if you can vote in the Event Channel as to which days work best for you for both of them that would be great!

For the first discord event/plot drop, we will be having a Basket Auction which we need volunteers for! During this Discord event, characters will either submit baskets anonymously to be bid on or they can choose to wait until the Discord Event to compete in an all out bidding war in an attempt to win the basket/outing of their desires. We would love to have AT LEAST 19 CHARACTERS submit baskets so that everyone will have a chance to participate in a basket outing.

We hope this event will be a fun way to throw characters together who otherwise might not have interacting with one another, help spark some muse and be a fun and festive celebration of Spring. So, although it is completely optional as to whether you submit a basket or not, the charity auction and the pairing portion of this event will be mandatory. Also, IF YOU PLAY MULTIPLE CHARACTERS, at least ONE must submit a basket, and hopefully it will be a lot fun!

Oh bidder, bidder, wherefore art thou bidder? That’s right. This date is a Shakespeare-themed extravaganza. From starting the date off with a gift basket with your own wheel of gouda straight out of She’s the Man to going on a paddleboat and playing paint ball like in 10 Things I Hate About You, be prepared for cheesy puns and goofy costumes. The evening will conclude at a nearby pub for a Drunk Shakespeare reenactment.

A cardboard box sits taped together. Inside is a dented can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, a cup of microwavable Easy Mac, a Twinkie and some other miscellaneous objects that were haphazardly thrown together such as a pack of batteries, some used birthday candles and a slinky that seems as if they came straight out of a junk drawn in someone’s house.

Classic Monsters Unleashed by James Aquilone My rating: 3 of 5 stars To unleash something is to set it free. It implies a force beyond our control, a power that cannot be undone. Unfortunately, this anthology of twenty-nine classic monster stories (and one poem) re-imagined does not live up to that implication. Despite more than half the stories taking place in the modern age, this anthology felt dated and mired in the past. Little of it was fresh and reading it often felt like slogging through homework. That being said, there were several standout stories. In reading order they are as follows: She-Creature From The Golden Cove by John Palisano: This was one of the few stories that truly had me on the edge of my seat. It was able to call back to its roots while still feeling novel and it did so without relying on gore or tired tropes. The characters had depth and I quickly cared about what happened to them. It was a story that proved horror can happen even on the brightest of days when you feel safe and carefree. Mummy Calls by Simon Bestwick: This was a clever take on the Manchester Mummy written in part as a letter to the editor and signed by the author himself. It was creepy in a cabinet of curiosities sort of way, and showcased the darker side of family obligations and legacies. A Tale Of Wickedness by Kelsea Yu: This is a nasty little piece (in all the best ways) and it is one of the most unique visions in this anthology. I will never look at The Wizard of Oz the same again. This author took something comical and turned it into something terrifying while also putting heart and depth into it. She's one to watch, folks. Hacking The Horseman's Code by Lisa Morton: This was by far the best story in the bunch, and I dare say, this story alone might be worth buying the book. Morton's take on the Headless Horseman steps right out of the near future and hauntingly asks the question: Is there a ghost in the machine? Superbly crafted, well paced, and highly original. This story will sit with me for years to come. Other notable entries include: The Invisible Man: The Fire This Time by Maurice Broaddus Da Noise, Da Funk, Da Blob by Linda D Addison Rapt by Rena Mason Someone To Blame by Ramsey Campbell Fans of horror literature tend to have specific tastes. There are those that love old fashioned blood and guts, and those who love stories with more meat on their bones. I tend to be in the latter camp. I want morality and trauma and a mirror held up to the world. Classic Monsters Unleashed caters more to the former but there are still gems of the latter to be found. All in all an interesting foray into all things classic monster, and there's sure to be something to please even the finickiest of readers. The Marriage of Princess Helena

The marriage of her Royal highness Princess Helena to Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein took place on Thursday, in the presence of her Majesty the Queen, their Majesties the King and Queen of the Belgians, the members of the English Royal family and a select congregation of the aristocracy, in the private chapel of Windsor Castle.

Princess Helena Augusta Victoria, fifth child of Queen Victoria and of the lamented Prince Consort, was born on the 25th of May, 1846, and is therefore in her twenty-first year. It has been mentioned in Parliament by one of her Majesty's Ministers, and it may therefore, without impropriety, be recorded here, that the widowed Queen has experienced, in the tender and dutiful attentions of this daughter, one of the greatest sources of consolation during her late bereavement.

Prince Frederick Christian Charles Augustus is a younger son of the late Duke Christian Charles Frederick Augustus of Schleswig-Holstein (who ceded his duchy to Denmark) and brother to Prince Frederick Christian Augustus the eldest son, whose claims to the sovereignty of the duchy, as against, the King of Denmark, were made the pretext, for the late war on the part of the German Powers. Prince Christian, as the younger son is usually called, was born on the 22nd of January, 1831, his mother being Louisa Sophia, Countess Danneskiold-Samsøe, a Danish lady married, in 1828, to the late Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg, and its lineage is collateral with that of the reigning families of Denmark and Russia. Prince Christian has held commission in the Prussian army. By the express offer of her Majesty, he will henceforth be addressed with the style of Royal Highness.

The small private chapel of Windsor Castle is situated almost in the centre of the Queen's private apartments. Its limited dimensions were, under the direction of the Lord Chamberlain and the Hon. He didn’t say anything, that night. Nor the next, his uniform gloves coving him up and giving him time. Instead he watched and tried to repress his believing himself so vulgar at the feeling like he was being so insidious when he bought a telescope for the apartment to look inside the world ‘Bulk’ (as he always wrote in his crappy handwriting on the cups he handed over) lived in during the day when he knew he was home. His roommates disapproved, at first; but they shut up right quick when Billy took a peek himself and nearly passed out when he saw a coat of arms in majestic blue with a cluster of bright orange Sweet William and Jewelweed--scarred and warped but absolutely there--on the back of one of the other sex workers that spent most of the day wandering up and down town on foot, sometimes in the park playing random instruments he must have rented from buskers.  When everyone else in their apartment eventually took their own look through the lens, by the end of the month, they were all worrying and pissed and longing in their own individuals ways. But none more than Jason.

The Atwoods and their friends are genuine and caring. It is very easy to get invested in their lives. Rick and Marquetta's relationship is strong and they have real-life problems. Dealing with a new baby and a teenager like Alex while running their B&B and Rick working with Adam more often than not isn't easy. They don't always agree on things, but their love shines throughout the story. I really enjoy the way we get to know Alex's thoughts through her diary entries. She is quite a young lady, fearless, especially when trying to help someone. She usually takes the time now to weigh her options but she still puts others first which puts her in some dangerous situations. I admire her courage. In her quest to help people, she also thinks she is a great matchmaker. She did get her dad and Marquetta together :-) Now, she believes a guest at the B&B is the perfect match for her teacher. Oh to be thirteen. The author has put forth a mystery full of twists and turns. It was fun to follow along as Rick, Adam, and Alex worked through each clue to solve this puzzling case. Alex tries so hard to do the right thing. I am surprised Rick doesn't have a full head of gray hair. The showdown had my heart racing and thankful Alex is not my grandchild. I don't think my heart could handle all the excitement that comes with the wonderful, curious, courageous child Alex is already. The Secret Ingredient to Murder was a fantastic read. I escaped right into it and was completely entertained. While this book can be read as a standalone I recommend you read the series in the order they are written to get to know these terrific characters from the beginning.
