July 28, 2023 - Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) Requested by: datruechelsea Breeding in much of Eurasia, these cuckoos winter in parts of central and Southern Africa and some areas of South and Southeast Asia. They feed on insects, especially caterpillars, as well as spiders, snails, the eggs and nestlings of small birds, and occasionally fruit. Females lay their eggs in the nests of a variety of other bird species and chicks evict the host birds’ eggs and chicks. The chicks also expel a foul-smelling liquid that helps repel predatory mammals.

Újabban sajnos nem álmodok túl érdekeset vagy koherenset akár, de most megmaradt egy részlet

mégpedig az, hogy véletlenül a készülő cikkembe kezdtem el írni egy furry regény csíráját és úgy küldtem el a témavezetőmnek. Hideg verejtékben úszva ébredtem... de persze rájöttem, hogy ez csak álom volt és szerencsére nincs benne semmi ilyen.

Sőt, taktikusan még sikerült kitörölni időben a belső poénjaimat is, amiket csak azért írok, hogy feldobjam magam munka közben, mint pl. a témavezetőm "írd le, mit látsz az ábrán" instrukciójára elsőre csak annyit írtam, "mit látsz, Laca? egy jó nagy segget látok!" (Bizottság, nem pontos idézet), mert tényleg nem túl érdekes az ábra szerintem. :(

Vigyázni kell ezekkel, lehet, hogy nem jó taktika, mert korábban a készülő szakdolgozatban benne maradt az "ide majd beleírunk valami lófaszt" mondat, amitől eléggé elkerekedett az akkori témavezetőm szeme... Szerencsére poénra vette, de attól fogva visszatérően ezzel cikizett. :D Szóval csak óvatosan!

(...na jó, most már ez a poszt se koherens, úgyhogy eszembe jutott egy másik álomfoszlány: berepült hozzánk egy kakukk(!), kicsit zavarodottnak tűnt, de később feléledt, talán nem volt beteg. Még gondolkodtam is, hogy meggyűrűzöm, igen ám, de nincs gyűrűzővizsgám, akkor simán megbüntethetnek ezért. Ja, aztán leesett, hogy gyűrűm sincs, OK. :P Így csak kigyönyörködtem magam benne és elengedtem. Anyám meg azért pörölt velem, mert a kakukk odaszart az ágyra. Na und? Anya, nem mindennap látsz kakukkot kézben, ennyi simán belefér!!!)

HELLO STRANGER. I'VE MADE A.. ONE AND A HALF... comic..s. i did a short 18 page comic called 'Canorus', in black and white a few years ago for a tester

and then i did another tester, called Traipse!

it's been on hiatus for a while now and i'm not sure when it'll start up again but there's like 100 pages of pointless emotional drivel, just how i like it

and then i sometimes do silly one-off comic pages for my ARPG wolf ocs... (often including other peoples' ocs, like the larger white wolf in the first page, and the caramel wolf sitting up in the second page!)

WARNING THO, on Traipse- if you manage to seek it out, there are heavy themes of suicide, abuse and cult-ish things, THOUGH they aren't in the forefront and aren't explicitly shown. and Canorus has gore and death! wolf comic pages are safe tho ALSKNKL. just often sad and most of my ocs deal with loss of some sort for reasons i get into on my twitter vent blog- JK ALSKNDLKDASNLKSAND i don't have a vent blog

Elder Bonefall please give us a lesson on Cuckoos.

Hopefully at some point I'll be able to do a "hated animal" clan culture expansion so I can talk about ALL the wretched beasts at once, but until then, okay. Let me explain what a cuckoo is, what it does, and why Clan cats hate them so!

The Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) is a European bird notorious for being an obligate brood parasite. This means that a cuckoo is not capable of raising its own chicks; to reproduce, they lay their eggs in the nest of another bird.

The egg of a cuckoo is larger than its adoptive siblings, and hatches much earlier. Once born, that chick's mission is fratricide. It will attempt to kill its siblings by pushing them out of the nest, and if it can't accomplish this, it will try to starve them with its massive size and louder cry.

Cuckoo chicks become comically large, sometimes becoming so big that they can't even fit in the nest. They can be twice the size of their "parents" and STILL beg for food. An adult cuckoo can ALSO be a killer, chowing down on eggs and baby birds.

And, lastly, they're mimics. The adult female cuckoo is striped like a sparrowhawk, and can even copy its song to terrify its target hosts. Most cuckoo eggs even LOOK like the eggs of the nest they're laid in, except for the fact they're larger.

Clan cats consider songbirds to be sacred. Their tunes were gifts from StarClan, their nests a reflection of a warrior's nursery, and so it is a sin to kill them unless the Clan is starving.

A cuckoo, which steals the song and feathers of a sparrowhawk, kills its brethren at birth, and cannot even construct its own nest is the perfect example of a type of evil to Clan cats. They call it Mwyrgna, the "sin of cannibalism."

We might say Mwyrgna is related to our idea of Greed as a cardinal sin, but it's specifically primal, animal self-interest. It's the greed of beasts. It's creatures that destroy instead of create, acting on what benefits them.

It's the rat mother who eats her young so a predator can't have them. It's hogweed that chokes out a vibrant meadow. It's a Clan cat who kills the deputy so that he can have his place, setting his sights next on his leader.

And most of all, it is the Cuckoo. Everything about it embodies Mwyrgna. An evil creature that acts as a parasite on StarClan's sacred animals, born to kill the innocent and defenseless, with strength stolen from a more honorable bird.
