Whenever I'm having a bad day, I always think about how good Carmen got Rachel's ass in this scene:

But in all seriousness, I both love and hate Carmen.

I love her because she was the educator Rachel needed. She was fair and wanted Rachel to succeed, but didn't give her anything she didn't earn. Her point about Rachel underperforming in her classes is so overlooked, but it's so important. Carmen would have been flexible about her review if Rachel had just put in the work. But Rachel got arrogant and complacent and thought she could still be given special treatment without showing that she deserved it.

Carmen here was cathartic because she summarized what was wrong with Rachel from the beginning. Not because she was annoying or dangerously ambitious or even arrogant, but because she had no principles. Her selfishness and entitlement were her problems and her lack of discipline meant she couldn't build off of that and overcome it.

"You are talented. You have drive. What you don't have, is you have no foundation." This is one of my favorite lines in the show and really speaks to what's wrong with Rachel. The writing in season 5 ranged from mid to awful, but whoever wrote this scene was cooking🔥

Now, why do I hate Carmen? Well, mostly because she- and NYADA- are what the writers need her to be depending on the situation. Kurt not getting into NYADA after his really good audition and Rachel getting in after botching hers and stalking Carmen made no sense. This could have been easily rectified, Kurt should have gotten in and Rachel should have auditioned in the fall. Carmen, though no fault of her own, is inconsistent. And it results in Rachel still getting what she wants by being let back into NYADA after not only quitting, but being disrespectful to the woman who gave her a second chance

In 5.20 Blaine and Kurt sang together on stage and June liked it. Are there any stories where she is mad at Blaine for asking Kurt to sing with him? Maybe Blaine loses an opportunity because of it, she doesn't want to work with him anymore. I have never seen any stories about it. You mentioned you skip things you dislike, same, but I'm curious what plots you dislike the most?

To clarify from last night, though, I don't actually mind Comeback all that much (except Sue's story line is not in great taste at points) but it was getting late and I really wanted to watch BIOTA. Lol

Really, at this point - a lot of the things I dislike are a lot of trends -- such as the racism or fatphobia or just meanness that a lot of times permeated the show. There are also moments that just infuriate me -- such as Emma giving up her 'virginity' as a prize to Will for winning Nationals. Or the continued 'how to be a real man' rhetoric the show kept trying to shove down our throats. That stuff makes me want to throw things at the wall.

Here's a list of my least favorite story arcs in no order except, perhaps, chronological:

The Fake Baby - Season 1: I think over the years, I've gone a lot softer on Terri, and can recognize the satire the show was going for. But I still think the idea that Terri could fake a pregnancy for that long without Will noticing feels like a stretch and I've always found it a bit dumb.

Will/Emma/Ken/Terri Love Triangle - Season 1: It's not that it's bad -- Season 1 might have the tightest comedy in the show, I'm just bored by it because I really do not care about these characters. And Ken might be one of my least favorite characters during the entire run.

Will's Mid-Life Crisis - Season 2: It was clear that the show wasn't sure what to do with Will, especially after the pivot to focusing on the kids, and a majority of his stories in Season 2 weren't all that great.

All of it - Early Season 3: There's not much going on in eps 1-8 that I like - The First Time is an exception, and even within that episode there are things that I'm just like, ew, no. In case you're wondering - a run down of bad storylines in Early Season 3

Rachel v Mercedes which seemed like a cop out so they could feature Rachel still while trying to give Mercedes /something/ but while the concept of the Trouble Tones was fine, it's marred by the fact that Brittany and Santana are so mean during this time period

The Student Election - which I find frustrating, partially because it ties into the weird - Kurt is too gay to accomplish things stuff - but also partially I'm not a fan of how they showcased Brittany either. (I do like the unicorn concept, fwiw though)

Sue v Beiste for Cooter. Why was this a thing? Also - it's soured due to the fact that Cooter because a domestic abuser.

Finn disliking Blaine - because why not

Rory. Look, no shade at Damian McGinty. But Rory is easily the most boring and useless character on the show.

Santana's coming out - I think her development in Season 2 was great! The fact that this was botched so horribly is just frustrating. Santana is probably at her worst during this period - and her cruelty swept under the rug. Brittany is barely a part of the story line. And the whole thing becomes about Finn and how he's handling it more than what Santana's going through.

Puck/Quinn/Shelby - I hate it. I hate all of it. This is by far my least favorite story line in the show. I could make an entire separate post about how much I hate this story line.

Will and Emma - Season 3: It's not the worst, but Will's continued terrible decisions in relation to Emma are just frustratingly annoying -- such as his treatment of her about getting tenure and how he deals with her mental illness.

Sue's Pregnancy - Season 3: Why? Why was this a thing? It ultimately served no purpose and was mostly erased and not talked about after Robin was born.

Princess Rachel - late Season 3: Rachel was, annoyingly, handed everything on a silver platter because the writers felt like she deserved it after all of her 'suffering'. Props might be the worst - when Tina is brainwashed to say how wonderful and magical Rachel is and then they go stalk Carmen Tibideaux. (The Prom episode stuff is bad, too). But the worst part about all of it is that it came at the expense of Kurt - who got to fail so that Rachel could be lifted up.

Marley's Easting Disorder - Season 4: It was just poorly handled in general and 'resolved' by a Ryder making her feel better about herself. I just can't with it.

Marley/Ryder/Jake Triangle - Season 4 (and 5): It's just boring. And after all the love triangles and not great romances on the show it just wasn't that interesting.

Previously Unaired Christmas - bleh

Anything Vocal Adrenaline - Season 6: While I think I understand why there was so much VA -- it was a way to fill out the episodes. It was just too much.

Looking at the episode list, those are the big ones. There are minor things here and there, and definitely moments that make me want to throw things, too.

Helping Rachel - Rory Flanagan

Not a request

Summary: Rachel messed up her NYADA audition, and is really upset about it. Seeing how much it effects her, Rory and Y/N take a road trip on her behalf. (can’t actually remember if he is in it here, but oh well)

Rachel was yet again in a mood. Since she messed up her audition, she hadn’t been right.

Honestly, I felt sorry for her. This was her dream, her whole life, and one mistake had ruined it. Didn’t seem fair, but what could I do to help.

I was sat in the choir room after everyone had left, trying to think how I could help. Rory walked in, coming over to me.

“Why’re you still here? Everyone else has gone.” He asked, taking a seat next to me.

“Trying to think if there’s a way to help Rachel.” I said. “It’s not fair one little sign of nerves, and her dream future is gone. We need to convince Carmen to give her another chance.”

“And we will.” He said, putting an arm around me. “It’s sweet that you care so much.”

“She may be a pain sometimes, but that’s because she cares. She’s a friend Rory.”

I laid my head on his shoulder.

“Well, unless you can attend her classes, I don’t think you’ve got a chance.” He chuckled lightly.

“Ror, that’s it.” I said, sitting up again. “Carmen Tibideaux teaches more than her NYADA classes. If I can find a class close by, maybe I can catch her.”

i grabbed my laptop, and searched for her classes. “Got it!” I closed the laptop, and got up. “I’m gonna talk to her, there’s one going now, if I leave now, I can catch her.”

“I’m coming too.”

As we were leaving, we ran into Mr Schue, almost literally.

“Where’s the fire?” He chuckled.

“I think we may be able to get Rachel a shot at NYADA again, but we have to leave now. Don’t say anything in case we can’t.”

Without waiting for a response, me and Rory sped off again.

We got to her just as she was about to leave.

“Carmen Tibideaux?”

She turned to face me.

“How can I help?”

“Look, I know this is unusual and unorthodox but I have to do this. Not long ago, you came to McKinley High to see Rachel Berry audition and she choked. That’s not Rachel, she’s amazing! She knows that song off by heart, she IS Fanny Brice.” I told her. 

“I don’t know what it was. Nerves maybe? This is her biggest and only dream and I couldn’t let one mistake ruin her dream. Please, please let her re-do her audition. She’d be the best addition to NYADA.”

“It’s sweet you care so much about your friend. Not many would do this.” She commented. “But she had more than double the time I give to auditionees, I’m sorry. It wouldn’t be fair.”

I sighed.

“Look, we’ve got a Glee Club competition coming up. Technically she’s not auditioning.” Rory said, handing her an info leaflet. “Just think about it, we’ll save you a seat.”

We walked away, hopefully Carmen would come.

It was finally the day of the competition, and I’m surprised Rachel was here. No one knew we’d asked Carmen to come. We didn’t dare to say in case she didn’t show. Looking out into the crowd, as Rachel was getting ready for her solo, I saw Carmens seat empty and sighed.

“She didn’t show.”

“Who?” Finn asked, appearing near us to watch Rachel when she performed.

“Carmen Tibideaux. Me and Rory went to ask her to give Rachel another chance and invited her tonight.”

“Wow, that’s so amazing. I can’t believe you’d do that for her.”

“Well, that’s Y/N for you.” Rory said. “She’s amazing and selfless. It’s kinda why I’m in love with her.”

I looked at him in shock, Finn grinned.

“My man.”

“You-you what?”

“I love you Y/N, always have.”

Without another word, I kissed him, and he quickly returned it. We pulled apart when Rachel had walked onstage and started to sing. Partway through, Rory nudged me.

“Y/N look.”

I looked where he was pointing to see Carmen walking to her seat.

“She came. We did it Rory!”

Rachel noticed her, as she sat down. A grin lit up her entire face.

The rest of her performance was the best and brightest I’ve seen Rachel in months.

“I can’t believe she came! How did she know?” Rachel asked, running off stage.

Before anyone could answer, we all had to go and finish our performance.

The Switch

How exactly was it that Rachel choked her audition while Carmen TIbideaux praised Kurt's presentation, yet Rachel was offered a place at NYADA and Kurt was rejected? A potentially canon-compliant, yet unflattering possibility...

For the third day in a row, Blaine slipped out to his car at lunch on Wednesday to drive to the Hummel’s. He pulled to the opposite side of the road so he could reach into the mailbox without having to get out. He sorted through the envelopes until he found what he had been waiting for – Kurt’s letter from NYADA. He put the rest of the mail back in and closed the mailbox. He slipped the letter into his glove box and drove back to school.

After school, he invited himself over to Rachel’s and parked on the street next the Berry’s mailbox. He pulled the mail out and took it inside with him. Rachel looked through it and found her letter.

She nearly squealed. “It’s going to be so hard to keep from opening this until graduation.”

Blaine kept his voice steady and cheerful. “I could hold it for you until after the ceremony to keep you from being tempted.” He gave her a persuasive smile.

She looked at it again and quickly handed it to him. “That’s a good idea. Don’t give into me begging.”

He chuckled. “Of course not. Come on. Let’s sing like you wanted.” He put the envelope in his bag and moved to the other side of the room to sit down at the piano.

I rewatched Nationals as preparation for the next recap episode.

The New Directions are in Chicago for Nationals. Mercedes is sick and Mr. Shue recruits Quinn and Tina for the Troubletones. Mercedes gets healthy in time for the competition.

Jesse is mocking Rachel for choking, but talks to Carmen Tibideaux in her behalf.

Wade is freaking out and doesn't want to perform as Unique. Kurt and Mercedes give him a pep talk.

The New Directions win and the school celebrates them. Will and Emmy have sex and Mr. Shue becomes teacher of the year.

best dance move: Vocal Adrelanine's choreography is perfect, but I like The Edge of Glory and Paradise by the Dashboard Light better.

best songs: The Edge of Glory, It's All Coming Back to Me Now, Paradise by the Dashboard Light

performance mvp: There isn't much of a storyline. No one has the chance to stand out.

S4 E9 - Swan Song

THE GOOD

- Sue and Finn holding the nationals trophy all the way to Figgins office is so funny

- Madame Tibideaux is right about Kurt’s performances lacking depth 

- Unique falling down the hallway in skates is great

i also love that they’re all joining new activities!!

THE BAD

- why did Rachel get a winter showcase invite?

i’m genuinely confused. like she’s good but surely not in the top 10 students at NYADA

- WTF TINA 

this girl literally has an eating disorder caused by another member of the club and you have the audacity to insult her like that

(side note maybe the glee club should shut down if they’re giving each other eating disorders)

- NOOO BRITTANY DON’T EAT CHERRIOS OFF OF THE HALLWAY FLOOR

- they really saw two blonde bisexuals and smushed them together like barbies

Sam and Brittany have such bestie vibes. literally no sexual tension. 

- Marley needs actual therapy but she could also use a nice talk with an adult she trusts like Finn

THE MUSICAL

Something Stupid (8/10)

this number is cute. i like Sam and Brittany’s voices together even though he overpowers her a little. it was a fun little number, but i don’t like them together. they have no build up, no tension, and only seem like they are getting together because their the last combination of people in glee to put together. 

All That Jazz (9/10)

Kate Hudson is so hot in this number. my god. she’s amazing. the choreography is very cool. i love the dance class numbers. they have such a great style. it is weird that Rachel is supposed to being showing off her dance skills and only dances for like a couple seconds. i wanted more from her. 

Being Good Isn’t Good Enough (8/10)

this number was fine. Rachel’s singing was wonderful. but it was a little boring. i’m over Rachel singing Barbra Streisand songs. she needs to change it up a little. we’ve seen this a million times. i want something new. also the audience members had the weirdest faces the whole time.

O Holy Night (7/10)

this one felt weird. i know jewish people can sing Christmas songs, but it still didn’t seem right. this song is very jesusy. it was a nice moment and she sang the hell out of it, but i wish they had picked a different song. 

Being Alive (10/10)

this was a very nice number. i’m not usually a fan of Kurt’s voice but he sounded amazing in this. Carmen was really right when she said he needs to connect more and get rid of the gimmicks. he does so much better. i really enjoyed this and normally this kind of number is not my cup of tea. 

Don’t Dream It’s Over (7/10)

This song is so cheesy and they performed it so sincerely. super cringe. the singing was nice, but the blocking left a lot to be desired. they were just staring at each other from the top of the stairs.
