WE;RE READY TO GO ISLAND-HOPPING WITH OUR VETERANS!

Off the coast of southern California, not far from a population of millions, is a beautiful domain: Channel Islands National Park. Consisting of five of the eight Channel Islands in the Pacific Ocean, the national park is rather isolated and relatively undeveloped. It covers 249,561 acres of which 79,019 are owned by the U.S. government. The Nature Conservancy owns and manages 76% of Santa Cruz Island, the largest of the park islands.

Half the park's area is underwater and contains a unique and rare Mediterranean ecosystem originally settled by the Chumash people. They are home to over 2,000 species of land plants and animals that include the island rushrose, sea-cliff bedstraw, the island fox, bald eagles, orange Garibaldi fish, humpback whales, elephant seals, the California sea lion and giant sea bass. Sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving are a few of the islands' outdoor activities.

This sweet little fox is found only on the island of Santa Cruz, 8 miles off of Santa Barbara in the Channel Islands in SoCal. Look at that smile! (S)he has no predators on the island, and has endless wooded, grassy, and beachside areas to explore in complete peace. Unbothered by humans, we got to know this creature pretty well while camping there, watching them dance from site to site looking for scraps, kind of trying to be stealth about it but not really at all ... so, maybe smiling because he just snacked on someone’s jerky scraps! We met them again on trails that wound to the top of the island, then aside the kelp-filled waters on the island’s beaches .... mischievously wandering about, snooping around—they so comical! People often ask me what my favorite national park is, and it’s usually the ones where I had the good fortune of seeing cool animals in their natural habitat, just doing their thing. Wildlife doesn’t stop there at this national park either—there is a huge seal and sea lion colony on the island farthest east, San Miguel Island, and the birdlife at Anacapa Island is like nothing I’ve seen in the western U.S., an easy day trip via NPS boat ride. So much to see and do in this island group—a must see park for sure! 🖤 🦊 👣 America’s 40th National Park, @channelislandsnps in California, established by the @nationalparkservice on March 5, 1980. .
