#Repost from my conservationist friend @adam_ernster @download.ins --- Spending everyday on the water with these giants for the past several months has in a way, made be complacent about the rarity of a blue whale. I’m so #oceanblessed to live and work in one of the largest and most concentrated blue whale hotspots on the entire planet. An endangered species, blue whales face the threat of being struck by a 100,000 ton container ship, or having their entire tail fluke wrapped up in fishing filament. Both of which we have seen traces of this year — Today served as a friendly reminder that I am the luckiest guy in the world. Spending my days scanning the oceans surface for any trace of the worlds largest animal is a blessing I will never again take for granted. These “tubercles,” can be found along the snout or rostrum of the humpback whales, as well as the superior edge of their pectoral flippers. Many theories have come along throughout the years to explain these strange bumps. Some think the hair follicles can detect changes in temperature and pressure in water. Others think it can help humpback detect bait-balls in dark or murky water. Along with the proposed theories of these tubercles helping in a sensory way, for humpbacks to feel out their underwater world, a more popular theory had come into play. The - T U B E R C LE - E F F E C T - states these bumps can help with the hydrodynamics of the whales. Tubercles have been shown to increase life and decrease drag in the water. Since humpbacks are the most acrobatic of the great whales and are one of the worlds only species to have this characteristic, it’s definitely not a bad idea to think these can help with their agility! Nature has come up with so many beautiful ways for creatures to excel in their own worlds.
