Wednesday, July 27, 2022 It just keeps getting better and better! 5 species of cetaceans and 6 species of pelagic girds on this trip Twenty minutes from the Lighthouse and about 4 miles away we found 80-100 inshore bottlenose dolphins chasing bait at the surface and diving to 75 feet for bait at the sea floor. We headed on our way and found our first whales about an hour later. We saw 7 different humpback whales blow at the same time! WOW! It gets better – there were two mom/calf humpback pairs including Rune and her 2022 calf. No other humpback researchers knew that she had a calf until we found with her! We have yet to ID the 2nd mom. The humpbacks were breaching, bubble feeding, open mouth feeding, flipper slapping! WOW! We also had at least 4 finback whales – 2 mom/calf pairs. Oh, let’s not forget about 60 short-beaked common dolphins. These “tubercles,” can be found along the snout or rostrum of the humpback whales, as well as the superior edge of their pectoral flippers. Many theories have come along throughout the years to explain these strange bumps. Some think the hair follicles can detect changes in temperature and pressure in water. Others think it can help humpback detect bait-balls in dark or murky water. Along with the proposed theories of these tubercles helping in a sensory way, for humpbacks to feel out their underwater world, a more popular theory had come into play. The - T U B E R C LE - E F F E C T - states these bumps can help with the hydrodynamics of the whales. Tubercles have been shown to increase life and decrease drag in the water. Since humpbacks are the most acrobatic of the great whales and are one of the worlds only species to have this characteristic, it’s definitely not a bad idea to think these can help with their agility! from @tonywu98 - The Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest’s image selection for the LUMIX People’s Choice of the Year Award is online. This image that I took of a relaxed humpback whale emitting a stream of bubbles is one of the photos. There is some background on the contest site, but here is more information if you’re interested. I took this photo during the first of two times I met this female and her male calf. The perspective/ camera angle is straight-on at the tip of the adult whale’s lower jaw, close enough that you can see the many barnacles and whale lice populating the whale, as well as the design/ layout of the tubercles (little bumps) on her head. The tubercles each contain a single hair follicle. Though we are not entirely sure what they are for, they (1) provide a visual link to the fact that whales are mammals, and (2) are arranged in such a manner that if you consider the layout, it certainly gives the impression of a sensory network. We know that the tubercles are highly enervated, so that supports the idea that the tubercles comprise a sensory system. Finally, the stream of bubbles is really what I wanted to capture. Whales don’t sleep in the same way we do, but it’s fair to say this whale was highly, highly relaxed. I’ve seen bubbles stream like this from the blowholes of whales only a handful of times. I do not know what, if anything, it signifies, but I like to imagine that it’s a little bit like our snoring :) In order for the whale to let me take this photo, she had to be completely comfortable with my presence. Actually, both she and her calf. I use the words “for the whale to let me take this photo” intentionally. Too many people understandably think, “I am going to take a photo.” One thing I’ve learned from being in the water with animals hundreds of times larger than me, and immeasurably more agile than I ever will be, is that I rarely decide anything.
