As cold weather sweeps across the U.S., some electric vehicle owners are learning a bitter truth: Low temperatures can stop the cars dead in their icy tracks.
The issue crystallized this week when some Tesla owners in Chicago discovered their EVs' batteries had died in sub-zero temperatures. Drivers also said some of Tesla charging stations weren't working, or if they did work that the stations were taking longer than usual to charge up their vehicles.
“I've been here for over five hours at this point, and I still have not gotten to charge my car,” Tesla driver Brandon Welbourne told CBS Chicago. “A charge that should take 45 minutes is taking two hours.”
What happens to electric vehicles in cold weather?
Here's what to know.
Electric vehicles are less efficient in cold weather, with Recurrent's research finding that below-freezing temperatures reduced driving range up to 30% on 18 popular EV models.
An EV with a 200 to 215 mile range may only go 150 to 175 miles in the cold, Recurrent's Case said, while noting even that reduced mileage is often sufficient for most drivers. “The average person with an EV drives 30 miles a day,” he said.
Still, a shorter range in cold weather could be an issue for some owners if their EV runs out of juice miles earlier than expected, potentially leaving to hunt for an available charger or, worse, stranded in dangerously frigid conditions.

Off the grid König just shifted something in my brain… where do I get a man like this
Off the grid people are CRAZY you should def try to hook up with one. They're adorable and tough and hairy and will always treat you like a princess whether you like it or not.
It's just that you can't find them anywhere and when you do accidentally bump into one, he might offer you some dumpster dived fish or a nice roakdill badger cooked in cream. Then he'll give you a lecture on Carrington Event and complains how hot it is, he needs to take off his shirt (the room temperature is like 15°c)

Imagine walking into an airport or grocery store and your smartphone automatically starts charging. This could be a reality one day, thanks to a new wireless laser charging system that overcomes some of the challenges that have hindered previous attempts to develop safe and convenient on-the-go charging systems.
"The ability to power devices wirelessly could eliminate the need to carry around power cables for our phones or tablets," said research team leader Jinyong Ha from Sejong University in South Korea. "It could also power various sensors such as those in Internet of Things (IoT) devices and sensors used for monitoring processes in manufacturing plants."
In Optics Express, the researchers describe their new system, which uses infrared light to safely transfer high levels of power. Laboratory tests showed that it could transfer 400 mW light power over distances of up to 30 meters. This power is sufficient for charging sensors, and with further development, it could be increased to levels necessary to charge mobile devices.

Study unveils a spontaneous toroidal polar topology in the helielectric nematic state
Tumblr media
(Zoomed toroidals. Credit: Yang et al.)
"Magnetic and electric dipoles, objects with two oppositely charged ends, have a similar symmetrical structure. One might thus assume that they exhibit similar internal structures and physical states.
Researchers at South China University of Technology in China recently showed that this is not always the case, by examining the topology of an emerging ferroelectric liquid-matter state with polarized helices, known as the "helielectric nematic state." Their findings, published in Nature Physics, show that this state has a spontaneous toroidal polar topology generated through a flexoelectric effect that favors a specific form of splay deformation of polarizations."

"In some of their previous studies, the researchers showed that a complex polar orientational field is an advantageous feature for the realization of systems exhibiting a nonlinear optical amplification known as phase-matching. As part of their future research, they would like to build on their findings to facilitate the potential development of these systems.
"Polarization engineering in crystal-based ferroelectrics is known to be very difficult," Aya added. "Thus, developing previously impossible polarization engineering in polar fluids and therefore enabling the fabrication of highly efficient nonlinear optical devices will be one of our follow-up targets.""
