Camp Gritty

There is an adult summer camp located in Tennessee (USA) that seems really great. The second session is happening right now, so I suppose you’d have to wait for next summer, but check this out -

It’s open to women/afab non-binary/trans women. Taken from their website:

“After two summers of Camp Gritty it is an established community of like minded individuals all working together to embrace, care for, inspire, and encourage one another. By being in an environment that honors and embraces self expression we're collectively working towards breaking down the misogynistic behaviors and thoughts we’ve been taught that cause us to compare ourselves to each other, pit ourselves against other women and to do anything other than love ourselves and our bodies. Your main job at camp is to feel comfortable in your skin and build friendships and my main job is to provide you an environment that caters towards that!

Regarding gender: I think camp is magic and if you think you’d benefit from being there then I want you to come! The first two years of camp I promoted it as being for women/afab non binary/trans women and my attempt at inclusion still left room for exclusion. As a woman I crave safe spaces and the sad reality of that is it’s often times synonymous with woman-only spaces. I think spaces like this are massively important and I don’t think women should feel guilty for wanting, creating or participating in them. If camp is spoken to or about in regards to campers being women it comes from a place of nurturing a unique environment, it is not at all an attempt to invalidate, intentionally disrespect or ignore your identity. At camp I will provide optional pronoun pins (she/they/he) in addition to name tags. All of us are still learning, I ask that you please go into camp knowing that you are loved and accepted by the other campers and anything that seems rude (staring/misuse of pronouns, etc) most likely comes from a lack of understanding and I highly encourage you to talk about it with your fellow campers because this is a group that is eager to learn, to build friendships, to include and to embrace individuality.“

This seems like such a cool camp. I’ve never participated, but I’m following the camp’s creator/host on Instagram (Charlavail, who has quite a large IG following because she has amazing art and stuff. She’s also friends with Hayley Williams of Paramore but that’s beside the point)

Just putting this out there in case anyone’s interested for next year, assuming they’ll have it again (next summer would be its fourth year). Judging from the pictures and videos from the camp, it looks like everyone’s having/had a blast!

a very gritty recap; i feel like i didn’t capture enough on my nice camera to show y’all how magical camp was so here’s a collection of doodles, pins and polaroids to share some of my favorite memories. a million thank yous to @charlavail who made this all possible and who keeps turning dreams into reality!! i’ve never felt so valid and comfortable with just being myself while going miles outside my comfort zone. i’m very grateful to have gotten to experience camp this year + will hopefully keep returning in the future because to say i had the best week of my life is an understatement. 💖
