Kingdom of Nri
The Nri people of Igbo land have a creation myth which is one of the many creation myths that exist in various parts of Igbo land. The Nri and Aguleri people are in the territory of the Umueri clan who trace their lineages back to the patriarchal king-figure Eri.Eri's origins are unclear, though he has been described as a "sky being" sent by Chukwu (God). He has been characterized as having first given societal order to the people of Anambra. The historian Elizabeth Allo Isichei says "Nri and Aguleri and part of the Umueri clan, [are] a cluster of Igbo village groups which traces its origins to a sky being called Eri."
Archaeological evidence suggests that Nri influence in Igboland may go back as far as the 9th century, and royal burials at the Igbo-Ukwu sites have been unearthed dating to at least the 10th century. Eri, the god-like founder of Nri, is believed to have settled the region around 948 with other related Igbo cultures following after in the 13th century. The first Eze Nri (King of Nri) Ìfikuánim followed directly after him. According to Igbo oral tradition, his reign started in 1043. At least one historian puts Ìfikuánim's reign much later, around 1225 AD:
Each king traces his origin back to the founding ancestor, Eri. Each king is a ritual reproduction of Eri. The initiation rite of a new king shows that the ritual process of becoming Eze Nri (Nri priest-king) follows closely the path traced by the hero in establishing the Nri kingdom.

The Kingdom of Nri was a religio-polity, a sort of theocratic state, that developed in the central heartland of the Igbo region. The Nri had seven types of taboos which included human (such as the birth of twins), animal (such as killing or eating of pythons), object, temporal, behavioral, speech and place taboos. The rules regarding these taboos were used to educate and govern Nri's subjects. This meant that, while certain Igbo may have lived under different formal administration, all followers of the Igbo religion had to abide by the rules of the faith and obey its representative on earth, the Eze Nri

Today has been a really good day, can I share some updates?
Received confirmation that I am being flown out to Denmark and Australia this year to write commissioned pieces.
My betrothed bought me the jacket I have been eyeing for the last 2 months and is sending me on a solo trip to Iceland this summer.
I've been invited to attend a book launch this month at a private member's club, as an up-and-coming writer.
I've been shortlisted for internships/traineeships at some of the most influential media houses in the country.
Honestly, the positive news has been just overflowing today, so cheers to life 🥂

The story of an Igbo hustler:
Joseph Chukwuka Ulasi, hailed from Nnewi in Anambra state. Born in 1890 and died 1944.
He was nicknamed "O ji ụkwụ eje Aba" because of his unflinching hustling spirit as a young Igbo boy determined to make it in life and of which he eventually did by becoming the most successful transporter from South East.
He regularly traveled on foot from Nnewi to Aba in mid-1920's in search of fortune (O ji ụkwụ eje Aba). At Aba he traded in textiles and produce, slowly and painstakingly building a solid asset base by setting up roadside stalls along the popular Aba Road. He would recruit apprentices from Nnewi at one stage, up to sixty. By 1933, he had built up a fleet of six lorries, which he deployed into a road haulage business which earned him a mail delivery contract for the Eastern Provinces. He made fortune from the Mail delivery contract which helped him to up his fleet of lorries from 6 to 14 as at 1935.
The name of his Transport Company is J.C Ulasi Motors, a household name in the 1930s. He became a Warrant Chief at Aba and died in June 1944. His kinsman Louis Odumegwu-Ojukwu was to succeed him as the King of the road haulage business by the formation of his legendary Ojukwu Transport Company in 1937. Chief. J.C Ulasi tremendous success as a transporter also inspired his cousin, Late. Chief Ejikeme Ilodibe of "Ekene Dili Chukwu" to emerge as a transport magnate. JC Ulasi died a wealthy Igbo transporter, he was the first Nigerian to venture in to Transport business and it played out well for him. Many others toed his path.
You have now known the story behind that popular nomenclature "O ji ukwu eje Aba"

Till (2022, dir. Chinonye Chukwu) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Till was the rare biopic that manages to rise above the genre trappings and give its audience something a little more than just a rehashing of historical events. By putting Mamie Till-Mobley at the film's center and focusing on the grief of a mother who needlessly lost her son to racist brutality, Chukwu has allowed the film to breathe, and has allowed the audience to come in and be outraged and distraught with her. The film never feels emotionally manipulative, which would have been very easy to do here. Instead, the film starkly shows the nature of what happened that day, and how Till-Mobley handled the aftermath, the history speaks for itself here, and Danielle Deadwyler is merely performing as a conduit for her grief, her anger, and her determination. Other civil rights figures of the time, such as Medgar Evers and T. R. M. Howard make appearances, and instead of pulling major focus towards these very famous figures, the film instead allows them to take a backseat. This is not their story, it's Till-Mobley's, and Chukwu respects the real life people this movie is based on enough to allow them to take center stage and never falters from that. There's really not a lot else to say, it's just an incredibly well-made historical drama with an oft overlooked, wildly sympathetic and empowering woman at its core. Till is well worth the watch.
Score: 9/10
Currently available to rent or purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and to pre-order on DVD & Blu-ray through Orion/Universal Studios/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
