Hogwarts Legacy concept art
Don't know if anyone has shared these yet:
And individual porfolios of many artitst who worked on the game (go look at their full profile to find all the concept art for HL)
Intersting tidbit that can be found in there 👀 (maybe they can still offer that possibility for the sequel??)
Tumblr media
Looking at the concept art for the cairn dungeons and the ancient magic dungeons (by Ben Simonsen) it also looks like thay had thought of much more elaborate puzzles within the dungeons and it hurst my heart that they cut that 😥 I wanted challenging puzzles to solve!

btw about Neil Gaiman I periodically agree with the 'Neil Gaiman is annoying' stuff bc I feel like both he and Amanda Palmer seem like people who I would go insane stuck in a room with bc we have very different ideas about art and suchlike. and I also do think that the career trajectory he's on lately is cynically redoing his greatest hits and pretending that was the dream all along when it clearly was not. which is at best meh.
having said which
as far as I can tell by far the most common complaint about Neil Gaiman is "Snow, Glass, Apples is problematic/gross/it's got incest and rape and frames the child as the aggressor"
which strikes me as a weird complaint to pull out of a 40 year body of work tbh when that short story is pretty clearly coming from a place of 'how far can I push this'. like you don't have to like the story. I don't really like the story. but it is. a horror story.
like and this is the thing with particularly 90s alt horror right? a lot of the interest is in transgression and sitting in the worst possible perspective and seeing what happens if you pull those strings. like I really like Clive Barker for example but there's a good chunk of his short stories that I'm like I'm not picking up what you're putting down Clive this seems Kinda Off. but that willingness to write some trite or Bad Message horror fiction that doesn't land is imo a side effect of being willing to try writing uncomfortable and unpleasant fiction at all. which is what horror is for, among other things, it's for creating discomfort as a form of catharsis or engagement.
like I am not a huge fan of the type of sex-horror that pops up in a lot of Gaiman's work and other contemporary horror writers - to me I don't find it upsetting or horny it just ends up feeling kind of edgy and tryhard - but I'm also a bit like. it does seem like a lot of people's beef with Neil Gaiman is that In The 90s He Was A Horror Writer
and this approach to Problematic Horror in Snow, Glass, Apples I find kind of microcosmic of how The Discourse often approaches art in this kind of 1:1 way. if you write a story which seems to line up with rape apologia it can only be because you agree with it. if you write a story about transphobia you're a transphobe. if you write a story that makes me genuinely uncomfortable you're attacking me.
but artwork, especially art like horror that's not necessarily trying to provoke enjoyment as its main response, is necessarily hit and miss. and if what you're shooting for is discomfort then whether it works, falls flat or goes too far incredibly depends on your audience. and making good art - as in art that makes its audience think, art that opens the audience up to discomfort and catharsis and sticks with them and changes them - requires the space to experiment and tbh the space to fuck up. like they aren't all going to be winners and they certainly aren't all going to work for you as a singular audience.
personally I don't see the appeal of Snow, Glass, Apples, less cause it's nasty and more cause it's hack. ooh an edgy monstrous version of a fairy tale where there's lots of rape and cannibalism? you're soooo original Neil. but like. that's fine. I don't really vibe with like 70% of Neil Gaiman stuff I've read but I still like Neil Gaiman because the stuff that works for me really works for me.
idk I think there's a lot of folk on this website who shouldn't interact with horror cause they clearly aren't interested in being horrified. that's not everyone who dislikes Snow, Glass, Apples, but it's a real undercurrent to a lot of the criticism and tbh this kinda vibe is shit for art. making standout art What Is Good also requires being ready to make art which stands out for the wrong reasons. sometimes they'll be the same art to different people.
#red said#not to Cancel Culture this but isabelle fall springs to mind in a lot of how folks talk about stuff like this#like she wrote a transgressive piece exploring her own negative feelings about transness and her anger around a transphobic trope#and she made something which i found really resonant and interesting#and she got torn apart for it because it Might From Some Angles Agree With Transphobia#and I'm not making a direct comparison. because i think attack helicopter is a really GOOD story and i think SGA is gratuitous and hack#but that's the thing right? transgression and discomfort and speaking about unpleasant things in an openended way are KEY#to making art that engages directly with your own pains and angers and discomforts#and that's hard to mediate tbh. but it's also very necessary.#i think as well thinking about Gaiman this is also a thought I've often had about Amanda Palmer#who over the years has written a lot of songs about things i find genuinely uncomfortable or offensive.#and i can engage with 'it's fucked up to tell your ex they transed their gender At You' or 'your partner's suicide is not about you' bc yeah#but#you can't celebrate someone for making confessional music then get mad because you don't like everything they confess#if you only take about your socially acceptable thoughts it's not really confessional is it?#if you only talk about discomforting things that people are comfortable hearing about its not really discomforting#and you can only really discern what's Good Transgressive and what's Damaging Transgressive through doing i think#so if you want challenging art you are going to have to get some art which challenges you and you go hmm no i still disagree#is what i think#so yeah you can hate the artwork but when an artist is specifically setting out to make challenging art it's weird to hate them#for making 50 pieces of art you like and 1 you hate

Happy Wednesday, here’s which Welcome to Night Vale characters I could beat it a fight (excluding any and all supernatural abilities)
I would not win a fight against Cecil Palmer. I could beat Carlos in a fight and then I would feel really bad about it. Leanne Hart would put a hatchet through my chest and kill me. I feel like I could probably take Michelle because she has the vibes of someone who can't really put her money where her mouth is- I might walk away with a chunk of hair missing, but I’d win. I could never square up against Dana she’d stare me down until I combusted on the spot like a car bomb.

Oh right, the Cecilsweep reminds me that I made Cecil Palmer Ace Attorney sprites way back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mainly cribbing from that one design of him. You know the one.
I actually had a good chunk of a crossover fancase written that I never got around to completing. Maybe I should go back to it. I think it had a pretty good plot lined out, actually.
I owe this series a lot. Maybe I should.

I’m gonna be real I don’t think putting Laura Palmer on the haunt the narrative poll was a good move.
Yes she should win by default but also by putting her up in a bracket with characters from children's media…is not great. This is the character who represents the perpetuation of sexual violence against women and children. This is the girl a good chunk of characters in that bracket are based on. You cannot overstate the sheer emotional devastation present in Twin Peaks or it’s immense cultural significance on literally every medium of art since it’s creation.
Of course putting her in a popularity contest with tumblr favs is going to be ridiculous and upsetting for the fans who know her.

Thinking about quite possibly the most egregious things the NCIS writers ever did again. Nope, wait, I just added another one. Mentally, this started with just killing off Emily Fornell, but then I added killing off Breena Palmer too. Oh, and whatever the heck Bishop's ending was. I could go on.
The killing off of women for incomprehensible reasons unless it's only to further Man-Pain? Ridiculous. I don't even know where to start with Bishop's send-off, but at least she's not dead. You'd honestly think there's not a single person in the writers room that likes the show, or cares about the characters. I'm convinced not one of them is left that knows the plot of the show more than a couple seasons before they started writing for it.
And I definitely don't only blame the writers. I'm sure a good chunk of the issues are CBS' fault, problems which were highlighted during the strikes. But still.
I love this show. There's still good stuff about it today, don't get me wrong. I just randomly remembered some of these baffling plot choices that were mentioned in like one or two episodes and then never again, despite how heartwrenching and tragic they are.

The disonance between the cantos of "In which Judgement is passed" and "In Which We Stop at an Inn" is truly fucked when we compare the situation between Constance de Beverley, and lord Marmion side by side.
Judgement is finally given to Constance, and her cellmate like it's a herald from god itself.
Till thus the Abbot’s doom was given, Raising his sightless balls to heaven:— “Sister, let thy sorrows cease; Sinful brother, part in peace!” From that dire dungeon, place of doom, Of execution too, and tomb, Paced forth the judges three,
Part in peace... there is something so dark about telling the people that you are condemning to a possible death to go in peace, or that their sorrows will cease.
Although, I have to ask if in this canto is where Constance gets... put into a wall because of the metaphors used to convey the sheer terror that comes to the unsuspecting people that are not aware of the judgement.
That conclave to the upper day; But, ere they breathed the fresher air, They heard the shriekings of despair, And many a stifled groan: With speed their upward way they take, Such speed as age and fear can make, And crossed themselves for terror’s sake,
Are these shrieks of despair Constance's doing? Because as the canto goes to describe the overall ambiance that surrounded this unsettling moment, the shrieks got duller, and quieter.
Meanwhile this fucked up idea of justice is happening, or happened depending on the timeline, we start the third canto in an inn where lord Marmion and his army are staying for the time being.
No summons calls them to the tower, To spend the hospitable hour. To Scotland’s camp the lord was gone; His cautious dame, in bower alone, Dreaded her castle to unclose, So late, to unknown friends or foes, On through the hamlet as they paced, Before a porch, whose front was graced With bush and flagon trimly placed, Lord Marmion drew his rein: The village inn seemed large, though rude:
Yeah Constance is going to get trapped inside a fucking wall, but look! Lord Marmion found a problem! The poor lord, and his army didn't get the hospitality they wanted because the Dame rightfully didn't want to open her home to a bunch of men she didn't know while her husband was gone.
And now we are in a inn. There is laughter, food, and a very warm reading in what we now as modern readers can associated with what a medieval inn constitutes. And yet, the dread didn't left because the Palmer, once again a theme figure in contrast to Marmion, and his army, acts in a ominous manner.
Resting upon his pilgrim staff, Right opposite the Palmer stood; His thin dark visage seen but half, Half hidden by his hood. Still fixed on Marmion was his look, Which he, who ill such gaze could brook, Strove by a frown to quell; But not for that, though more than once Full met their stern encountering glance, The Palmer’s visage fell.
Even if Constance's revenge is slowly building towards victory, she is still going to end up dead while Marmion enjoys (for now I hope) all of the privilegues of being an emisary to the king. It's literally a methaporical situation of the people serving the elite, Constance escaped with Marmion and dedicated a good chunk of her life to him, and he repaids her with abandoning her to force Clare to marry him.
The power imbalance is unreal, and it will feel so good when Marmion does a single misstep that brings all of his good fortune crashing down. Well, I hope it happens.

tell 'em i'm a good kisser (prologue)
Van finds herself stranded on the side of the freeway. Rescue comes in the form of a beautiful stranger with a truly hilarious price.
(A Tumblr prompt fill [@owltrifecta]: Taivan meet cute.)
G (for now); 1693 words
A car, thinks Van Palmer, should not make that noise. It’s a remarkable shitstain of a vehicle, so maybe she isn’t one-hundred percent shocked when the noise—sort of a ka-chunk belting up from beneath the hood—echoes out of the blue. Maybe she isn’t as shocked as a person could be, either, when all her gauges go Fourth of July and smoke begins sluicing up over her windshield in earnest. This is what she gets, letting Natalie’s friend-of-a-friend-of-a-cousin give her a good deal on their old beater. Yeah, surprise isn’t the word.

The Sounds of Justice (5)
Tumblr media
Warnings: canon typical violence, cursing, non-consensual drugging, descriptions of character death, mentions and descriptions of jail, car crashes, lying, manipulation, guns, yandere themes, mafia AU, mafia Rafael Barba (trust me, he needs the warning), mentions of rape (not to the reader), and unwanted advances (nothing happens to the reader).
Chapter 5
“How’s it going Abby?” You asked stepping into the space that she had claimed as her lab.
Your friend and colleague turned to face you and winced, “You look terrible!”  She proclaimed.
“I feel terrible.  We got fifteen different calls last night about four new victims.”
“Four?!” Abby echoed.
“Four.”  You confirmed.  “Ducky and Palmer are doing the autopsies now but so far nothing.  Aside from the fact that they appear to have died in the same manner, there’s nothing connecting them.  Even then, that’s thin because two of the bodies we found last night were two young men who appeared to have run in two completely different directions for no discernible reason.  One went south and the other one went east.”
“That’s weird.”
“It gets better.  Or worse.  Depending on your point of view.  The two young men that I just mentioned?”  Abby nodded, “They accosted Rafael and I yesterday when we went for a walk.”
“Rafael?”
“Rafael Barba.  He’s the ADA that works alongside the SVU squad.”
“An Assistant District Attorney.  Bet Gibbs loooved that.”
“It went over like a lead balloon.”  You agreed.
“Did you tell Gibbs about your connection to those men?”
You shot your friend an are-you-serious-look, “Of course I told him.  I really thought he was going to Rule 10 me.”
“But he didn’t.  That’s probably because it wasn’t that much of a connection.”
“Maybe.”  You said non-committedly.
“Do you want a sip of my Caf-Pow?” Abby asked, holding the oversized cup out to you.
“No thanks Abby.  I need to be alert not bouncing off the walls and seeing pink floating elephants.  I had some breakfast even though I didn’t feel particularly hungry.”
“Suit yourself.”  She turned back to her machines and put her Caf-Pow down.
“Should I worry that Gibbs was able to get that here?”
“I’d be more concerned with this case.”  Your boss voiced as he entered the lab.  “What have you got for me Abs?”
“So far the only thing that these victims have in common aside from having their lives cut short unexpectedly was a chemical compound in their systems.  I’m working on isolating the chemicals but it’s gonna take time.”  Abby was tapping the keys of the machine closest to her as she spoke.
“This chemical compound was present in our Ensign?”
Abby nodded, “Same dose but it had a smaller effect on him and that’s how he was able to drive as far as he did.  What I don’t know is why it affected him less.”
“Did he have any food in his system?”  You suggested.
Abby paused in her typing, “Possibly.  That’d be a question for Ducky though.”
Gibbs turned to you expectantly, “On it boss.”  You commented reluctantly as nausea bubbled in your stomach.  You tried to avoid the ME’s office as much as you could not because you didn’t like Ducky or Palmer’s company but because you found their work a bit confronting.
“(Surname)!”  Gibbs called and biting down on your impatience about getting your visit to the ME’s office done as quickly as possible, you turned back to face your boss.
“Ducky and Palmer have finished the autopsies and the bodies are in storage.”
You felt some of the tension leave your body, “Thanks boss.”  You exhaled in relief.
Moments later, you strode into the ME’s office, “Ah, Miss (Surname).  I was wondering when you would visit us.”
“It took some persuading.”  You admitted.
“Yes, I’m well aware of how forceful Jethro can be.  What can we do for you?”
“Our Ensign.”
“Ah yes, Mister Michael Burns.”
“Did he have any food in his stomach or his intestines?”
Ducky thought for a moment, “As a matter of fact, he did.  He had chunks of yoghurt in his large intestine.  If I had to guess the flavour, I would say that it was banana.”
“Thank you Ducky!  I’ll run that--”
The doors to the ME’s office burst open and you came face to face with Sonny.  “Phone call two blocks from here.  Lieutenant thinks that it was the victim because he was slurring his words and muttered something about losing feeling in his left side.”
“Let’s go!”  You replied matching his intensity.  You paused and turned back to Ducky, “Ducky could you…?”
The ME held up his hand, “I’ll pass the message along to Abigail.”  He promised.
“Thank you!”  You called as you and Sonny dashed out of the office.
Sonny was able to cover more distance than you due to his long legs but you didn’t have time to dwell on that or give into your feelings of envy because you were too focused on reaching the next casualty before it became fatal.
Two minutes later, Sonny skidded to a halt in front of an abandoned building.  The two of you glanced at each other and if you could, you knew that you would have both spoken the same sentence about wondering why it was always abandoned warehouses or apartments.
The both of you unholstered your weapons and announced yourselves.  There was no answer.
“I hope that doesn’t mean that we’re too late.”  You thought.
You and Sonny entered the warehouse at the same time.  It was just as unappealing inside as it was outside.  It was drafty and the paint was peeling from the walls.  The curtains hung limply in tatters and the old machines were covered in layers of dust and cobwebs.  There were a few windows, so you and Sonny carefully manoeuvred around those to keep out of sight.  Thankfully, the warehouse only appeared to have one floor.
Sonny motioned that he was going to stay around this area and check it.  You nodded to show that you had understood his message and silently you crept forwards.  As you moved deeper into the warehouse, you could hear Sonny calling out “clear” every so often.
You turned to look behind a pillar and thought you heard a thud.  Straightening up, you peered in the direction that you had come from.  You stepped in the direction that you last seen Sonny and then you felt someone’s breath on your neck.
A hand wrapped around your head and shoved a handful of lollies in your mouth.  Your eyes widened in fear as your tastebuds registered an artificial taste underneath the fruity flavours of the lollies.  It tasted almost alcoholic.  The hand across your mouth tilted your head upwards and you unwillingly and reflexively swallowed the lollies.  Your vision dimmed alarmingly quickly and the last thing you heard before you went limp in your captor’s grasp was a clear voice with a mocking tone saying, “You’re lucky the boss wants you alive and mostly uninjured.”
Then your vision went completely black and you passed out.

Remastered Gil Kane renderings of Ray Palmer from his Sword of the Atom days during the 1980s.
The Sword of the Atom saga began in a four-issue mini-series, followed by three extra-large specials, and was finally wrapped up in the Power of the Atom, Ray's second ongoing comic series.
Ray had discovered that his wife, Jean Loring, was cheating on him. Distraught, he left Ivy Town and headed to the Amazon rainforest to track down a chunk of white star matter, the material that powers his costume and allows him to shrink.
Long story short, Ray ended up stuck at his Atom-default height of 6 inches, and took up with a similarly-sized race of aliens that lived in the rain forest. Like a miniature John Carter, Ray fell in love with the alien princess, and lead her people to defeat their enemies in a civil war.
Ray eventually returned to civilization long enough for him and Jean to get divorced. He headed back to the jungle to live the rest of his days with the princess and live happily ever after.
Alas, that was not meant to be...

so i wanna analyze the odds of cecil actually winning
heres the current numbers (as of ~4:40pm eastern, 8 hours before the semifinal polls end)
sans v onceler ~53k votes
sans 67% (35.5k)
onceler 33% (17.5k)
cecil v reigen ~89.5k votes
cecil 55% (49.2k)
reigen 45% (40.3k)
so it looks like it’ll be Cecil vs Sans. an incredible battle, i cant wait to see the art people make. Sans is a very formidable opponent, however at this time Cecil actually has 13k more raw votes, despite leading by a far lower margin in his semifinal. so if you look at just that, then cecil would win.
HOWEVER we have to factor in the votes of the semifinal losers! how will the reigen and onceler voters choose? if they all go for sans, then thats it for cecil. but i dont think it’ll shake out quite so simply.
i think a lot of the reigen fans will vote sans, both out of solidarity for him being the previous winner and out of revenge against the radio host who brought down their champion. but, a lot of reigen’s votes came more just not knowing who cecil even is. many of those people will probably also vote sans, but i think a chunk of them will have learned who Mr Palmer is and can be convinced to back him in the finals. im gonna give it an 80/20 split (this number is pulled out of my ass)
as for onceler fans, i’m less sure. the onceler shares qualities with both sans and cecil. arguably the onceler is the blueprint for sans’s bizarre amount of AU version, but the onceler is also a much more classic sexyman like Cecil. and cecil is easier to fit into a onceler-shaped body type. in my opinion, i think many onceler fans will go for cecil, but some will also flip with sans. i give it a 75/25 split (again this comes entirely from my ass)
so now let’s take my ass numbers and calculate what i think may happen with the final poll. i know this isnt the most statistically sound method cause i havent accounted for the fact that most people voted in both polls (for example i voted for both sans and cecil) but fuck you thats too much math im an art major and this is a silly internet thing lmao
sans: 35,510 (original) + 32,220 (from reigen) + 4,373 (from onceler) = 72,103
cecil: 49,225 (original) + 8,044 (from reigen) + 13,118 (from onceler) = 70,387
my ass-pulled guestimates have it as sans 50.6%, cecil 49.4%. however i expect the final poll to blow up big time, so there will be many people who didn't vote earlier that'll weigh in.
in conclusion i think it is absolutely possible for cecil to win, but it'll be a difficult fight where he's the underdog. i cant wait!
