the last arisen
a snippet from the aftermath of dragon’s dogma 2’s ending, by my own self-indulgent interpretation.
Time didn’t return back to normal as soon as the water had returned, the red clouds disappeared and the sun shone once more in the sky. Thanks to ferrystones the Arisen had shared, there was more than enough time for the people to re-evacuate back to their homes before the water filled the ocean, leaving their fears to drown.
And when the ocean filled, the great Dragon fell with a resounding splash. To the few who had witnessed this moment, it wasn’t without horror. But those who were held by chains of the great will of the world, they roared, and the world shook a little more.
A Drake took flight, its heart leading it to the ocean. Brineless, blue and beautiful. It followed the Dragon in, who knew how long after the fall. It searched, its heart still leading the way, seeking the Arisen for a reason no Drake had ever sought them before.
The red light which shone from the great Dragon’s carcass had dimmed, the Arisen fell deeper and deeper into the ocean. But It was alright, it was alright, there was no more brine, none of that malice.
“It’s alright, can you hear me?”
It could make out the light, the scar, it delved deeper and deeper until at last, the sleeping Arisen was plucked by its claws. No time to spare, the Drake swam back up. Its wings were powerful against the water, so it went upward and ever upwards, still too slow. It needed to hurry, it needed to save the Arisen, to breathe.
At last, the Drake flew out of the ocean. What now?
Land. It flew, glancing occasionally at the Arisen in its claws, blissfully asleep, it hoped. Fate no longer bound them, was it his sacrifice? It can’t say, someone else must see, a human ought to know. The Arisen retrieved not his heart, they would have difficulty telling as well.
People. A tall pale haired lady and an old dwarf, tending to something outside of their solitary house.
Not humans, one was… was…
The Drake roared, feeling a connection, the elf grabbed her bow.
“I come in peace.”
A scar on her chest faintly lit up, indeed. She didn’t seem to have heard, however. Summoning magickal arrows, the Drake dodged, others hit. The Drake roared and the Arisen fell from its grip. No!
The dwarf’s eyes widened and ran towards the drenched fallen Arisen. His wife shouted something, hand on her chest, she had heard the mournful shout. The Drake landed a short distance away on mossy and wet rocks, it stared at the young Arisen attentively.
Finally, the magick archer gasped and shouted the Arisen’s name. They were familiar, good. The Drake breathed out, but couldn’t fly away just yet. Its fellow former Arisen met its eyes, she asked “Why?”
Alas, the Drake’s connection to her wasn’t great enough for it to answer. It bowed its head, then with a final glance at the Arisen being aided by the dwarf, it flew away.
To actually keep reading.

Faebruary/Februfairy 2024: "Treat"
"You don't seem to like humans very much," Dorothy observed.
Aibell paused.
"I understand humans," she said, finally. "Enough to realize that our races don't belong together."
"Cliodhna says you were in love with a human once."
"Yes. Once." She turned, looking Dorothy in the eye. "And I learned from that mistake. Have you seen the way that Cliodhna treats humans?" she asked suddenly.
Dorothy blinked. "Well...she seems to like them well enough," she said awkwardly.
"Likes them, yes. Loves them, even. The way you love a pet. Oh, she dotes on her newest paramour, but do you think she respects him? Did you see real love in their effusive devotions?"
Dorothy had no answer to that.
"It's happened dozens of times over the centuries," Aibell continued, turning back to her mirror. "Either they make her angry, and she banishes them back to the mortal world...or they grow old, and she gets tired of them. You'll notice she's never settled down, given one of them immortality. And Father's even more flighty," she added, eyes flickering back toward Dorothy.
"Maybe I don't like humans," she mused. "But I choose to ignore them. It seems kinder than the way that other fairies treat them."

🧜🏻‍♀️ Mythology Behind TSM 🧜🏻‍♀️
It’s no secret that The Syren’s Mutiny is above all, grounded in Celtic mythology (including Irish, Scottish, and Germanic Celts). So, I wanted to talk more about some of those mythology elements I pulled from!
We’re going to start with Cliodhna, my syren queen and goddess. I pulled a lot of my Cliodhna from the mythological Cliodhna, so I felt she was important to start with.
Other than the information in the slides, Cliodhna often had a collection of colorful birds that flew with her and who’s songs were able to both cure ills or drive mortals to madness, depending on Cliodhna’s mood.
Cliodhna was such an interesting aspect of Irish mythology, I knew I had to include her. Taking from the more…malevolent elements of her story, she became my queen of the syrens, goddess of the seas, of love, of beauty, and of women.
If this mythology interests you, check out The Syren’s Mutiny 🧜🏻‍♀️🏴‍☠️

Clíodhna
Clíodhna (Clídna, Clionadh, Clíodna, Clíona) is a Queen of the Banshees of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Clíodna of Carrigcleena is the potent banshee that rules as queen over the sidheog (fairy women of the hills) of South Munster, or Desmond.
In some Irish myths, Clíodhna is a goddess of love and beauty, and the patron of County Cork. She is said to have three brightly coloured birds who eat apples from an otherworldly tree and whose sweet song heals the sick people. She leaves the otherworldly island of Tír Tairngire ("the land of promise") to be with her mortal lover, Ciabhán, but is taken by a wave as she sleeps due to the music played by a minstrel of Manannan mac Lir in Glandore harbour in County Cork: the tide there is known as Tonn Chlíodhna, "Clíodhna's Wave". Whether she drowns or not depends on the version being told, along with many other details of the story.

She had her palace in the heart of a pile of rocks, 5 mi (8.0 km) from Mallow, which is still commonly known by the name of Carrig-Cleena, and numerous legends about her are told above the Munster peasantry. In general, it has been observed that Clíona is especially associated with old Irish families of Munster. Clíona has long been associated with the lands that had been the territory of the Ui-Fidgheinte (O'Donovans and O'Collins) during their period of influence (circa 373 A.D. to 977 A.D.), or were later associated with what had been the Ui-Fidghente territory (MacCarthys and FitzGeralds).
Clíona is referred to as an unwelcome pursuer in Edward Walsh's poem, O’Donovan’s Daughter. And, in an ode praising Donel O'Donovan upon his accession to the chiefship of Clancahill, Domhnall Ó Donnabháin III he is referred to as the "Dragon of Clíodhna".
Clíodhna is also associated with the MacCarthy dynasty of Desmond, who adopted her as their fairy woman, and the O'Keeffes and FitzGerald dynasty, with whom she has had amorous affairs Clíodhna appears in the name of one O'Leary in a medieval pedigree, as Conor Clíodhna or "Conor of Clíodhna", and it is notable that the family were originally based in the area of Rosscarbery, very near to Glandore, before moving north to Muskerry. The O'Learys belong to the ancient Corcu Loígde.
Surviving traditions of Clíodhna in narrative and poetry associate her with the O'Keeffes and O'Donovans. The latter, originally from Uí Fidgenti in North Munster with its own traditions, where their original goddess was Mongfind, later moved south to Carbery on Cuan Dor Harbour, Clíodhna's traditional abode on the South Munster coast, and she then features in poetry associated with them. The O'Keeffe narrative tradition is more extensive, and Clíodhna has other Desmond associations too.
Clíodhna is said to be a rival of Aibell, in one tale, Clíodhna cast a spell that turned Aibell into a white cat.
The most traditional story of the famous Blarney Stone involves Clíodhna. Cormac Laidir MacCarthy, the builder of Blarney Castle, being involved in a lawsuit, appealed to Clíodhna for her assistance. She told him to kiss the first stone he found in the morning on his way to court, and he did so, with the result that he pleaded his case with great eloquence and won. Thus the Blarney Stone is said to impart "the ability to deceive without offending". He then incorporated it into the parapet of the castle. To be fair, Clíodhna does not take credit for all the blarney of the MacCarthys. Queen Elizabeth noted in frustration that she could not effect a negotiation with Cormac MacCarthy, whose seat was Blarney Castle, as everything he said was 'Blarney, as what he says he does not mean'.
