Prompt #221: “I love you. I’ve loved you since the moment I laid eyes on you and- Oh screw it!”
Find Part 2 Here
Dean sidles up next to the wall, trying to stay out of everyone’s way as they rush to the concession stand and into their assigned theaters.
He sees a cute couple walk past, fingers entwined and soft smiles on their faces, and he fills his mouth with popcorn.
Cas is late. And he’s like never late.
Cas was the kid in high school who carried all his textbooks with him throughout the day so he never had to risk stopping at his locker and being late to class.
Cas was the kid who showed up an hour early to graduation rehearsal.
Cas was the kid who showed up two days early to college orientation because what if something happens to the car, Dean? What if we can’t fix it on time and we miss orientation?
And Cas is the one who insists arriving at the theater twenty minutes before the film starts.
Dean looks down at his phone. Two minutes to screen time.
Just then the front door lurches open and a boy with wild hair sweeps into the lobby. He makes his way to the ticket booth and starts to hand over his credit card as his eyes roam and find Dean. A big smile splits his face and he waves.
Dean is about to wave back when the door opens again and a blond man with a sneer ingrained in his face enters. Dean’s hand falls.
The man walks right up to Cas, sneer easing into something resembling a smile and Cas leans back into his chest before handing him a ticket.
Oh hell no, Dean thinks.
But yes, it’s happening. Cas and the man start walking toward him, hands clasped together but where Cas is smiling, the man is sneering again.
“Sorry we’re so late, Dean!” Cas says once they’re in earshot. “Brady had to finish an assignment.”
Dean arches a brow. “On a Friday night?”
Brady’s grin is telling enough. “The pre-med workload is a bit different from secondary education.”
Dean catches the barb even if Cas seems oblivious but he just squeezes out a thin smile. “Of course it is.” He turns and begins walking into the theater without another word.
Since they’re so late they have to go toward the front to find three seats. Dean grumbles the whole way across the fifth fucking row until he’s falling into the plus red recliner. Cas sits next to him, and Brady seems to have to physically pull a stick out of his ass the way he lowers himself into the chair.
Dean puts his feet over the chair in front of him and passes the popcorn to Cas.
“Oh, thank you,” Cas says before taking a handful and passing it on to Brady.
The lights dim and the previews begin.
When the preview for the “Lego Batman Movie” starts Cas perks up. “I can’t wait for this one,” he says, leaning toward Dean because he always does this. Always has to tell Dean all the films he’s excited for and usually some fun fact about it that most people don’t know or care to know. And Dean listens and catalogues the title so he knows which films to watch out for.
“Did you know the guy who voices Sauron is the same guy who did the voices for Fart in ‘Rick and Morty’ and one of the minions in ‘Despicable Me’?”
Dean laughs. “No, and I’m a little scared that you know that.”
Cas’s big blues catch ever-changing light of the screen and they’re so bright. “I think he also might have played in that movie with the birds and-”
“I’m sorry, Cas, what’s that, darling?” Brady interjects and Dean sees a hand slide up Cas’s thigh.
Cas turns his head to repeat his fun fact to Brady who doesn’t look the least bit enlightened or amused but Cas continues to turn to Brady with his trivia through the rest of the previews. Dean sinks into his seat and eats more popcorn.
Once the movie begins, Dean actually starts to relax. He gets caught up in the storytelling and he completely forgets that Brady is just two feet away.
Until Dean and Cas go for a deep dive in the popcorn bucket at the same time and their fingers brush. Dean feels struck by lightning and yanks his hand free, flinging popcorn all over their laps.
“Dean,” Cas hisses. “Are you okay?”
“’m fine,” Dean whispers and tucks his hands safely between his thighs.
He stares at the screen, waiting for his heart rate to even out, for the heat to leave his body because damn this theater is awfully warm all of a sudden.
It’s starting to look good again and then he feels a hand brush his shoulder and looks over to find Brady’s arm draped around Cas. Cas instinctively leans into the half-embrace and Dean leans in the complete opposite direction. The movie keeps flashing before his eyes but he doesn’t pay attention to another single frame.
The second the credits start rolling he’s on his feet. His movement startles Cas and Brady apart and Dean tries really hard not to assume their position meant they had been kissing. He really does.
But then Cas is standing and his lips look pinker, eyes glassy, and he unleashes a dopey smile on Dean.
It’s like being pushed into a frozen lake.
Dean jumps away from his friend, kicking the popcorn bucket.
“I-I’ll, ugh, see ya guys later,” he blurts and starts walking away.
“Dean?” Cas calls after him. “Dean? Dean, wait!”
Dean gives a small wave but doesn’t stop as he reaches the aisle and hightails it out of the theater, not even bothering with his jacket. He fishes his keys from his pocket and shoulders through the front door and into the cold.
“Dean! Oh my god, will you wait a second!” Cas’s voice is close and Dean picks up his speed a bit.
“Sorry, Cas, I’ll text you later!” he yells back.
“Are you okay?” The voice is gaining on him and Dean can hear heavy footsteps like Cas is running.
“I’m fine!”
The Impala is in sight and Dean has his key ready.
“Are you sure?” Cas’s voice comes from just behind him and Dean feels his heart spike and then… he starts running.
He sprints the rest of the way to the car and hurries to unlock it — why didn’t he just grow up and put automatic locks on the damn thing?
“Dean!” Cas pants at his side. “Dean, what’s going on? Will you- Dean? Will you please-” Suddenly the keys are out of Dean’s hand. “WILL YOU PLEASE LOOK AT ME!”
Dean refuses to move for a good ten seconds, just staring through the window and seeing his own reflection. He glances to the side and can see Cas’s, his chest rising and falling heavily.
He swallows the lump in his throat and turns, meeting Cas’s wild eyes. “Hey.”
“Did you just fucking run away from me?” Cas demands, looking more confused than angry but the heat is still there.
“I’m in a hurry,” Dean tries.
“For what?”
“I’m meeting someone.”
“On movie night?” Cas asks, posture telling Dean that he doesn’t buy it for one second.
But Dean is nothing if not resilient. “Yes.”
“Dean, we always go out to eat after a movie.”
“Well, I can’t this time. I, ugh, I got a thing. And I’m gonna be late so can you-” He makes a grab for his keys and Cas holds them out of reach.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you had to meet someone afterward?” And Cas has the fucking audacity to look almost hurt or offended.
“Why didn’t you tell me that Brady was coming?” Dean shoots back, and if it comes out like more of a snarl he’s not sorry.
Cas frowns. “I didn’t think it would be a big deal because he’s come with us before.”
“So he’s just gonna start coming every Friday?”
“What? No! I mean, is it a problem? Do you not want him to come?”
“Of course I don’t, Cas!”
Cas’s eyes blink owlishly. “Oh. Um, why not?”
Dean flails his arms. “Because he’s an asshole, Cas, and this is supposed to be our thing! Ours. Just me and you.”
The frown returns, though it’s more bitter this time. “I understand that you’re upset and I apologize for not asking if Brady could come. But you can’t talk about him like that.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry for insulting your perfect boyfriend,” Dean sneers. “God forbid we call Brady out for being the pretentious, spoiled, disrespectful dirtbag that he is.”
“Dean!”
Dean can feel his energy dwindling and he shakes his head. “I’m done with this, Cas. Give me my keys, I’m leaving.”
But Cas holds the keys away from him again. “Not until you tell me what’s gotten into you. You’ve never had a problem with Brady before!”
Dean growls. “What the fuck was I supposed to say, Cas? ‘Hey, I don’t like your boyfriend because he’s a fucking douchebag and I get sick to my stomach watching you kiss him?’”
Cas reels back like he’s scared. “D-Dean-”
“’I don’t like your boyfriend because I hate that he gets to hold your hand while the closest I get is bumping your shoulder while we walk? I don’t like your boyfriend because he gets all your smiles and your dorky laughter when you snort? I don’t like your boyfriend because he gets your touches that I can only dream about?’”
The churning in Dean’s stomach is almost paralyzing but the beating of his heart is worse and he wants to stop but he can see the promise of relief at the bottom of this pit so he dives for it.
“’I don’t like your boyfriend because every time you say you might love him, I feel like my whole body shuts down. When you say you love him, I want to never feel again. I want to run away from you and never look back.’”
Now Dean is the one panting and his throat is scratchy, palms sweating and Cas is just staring at him. He’s vaguely away of the other patrons in the parking lot watching them.
When some semblance of life reenters Cas his first reaction is to look away from Dean and Dean feels his chest start to fill with something solid and heavy.
“Dean, I don’t… I don’t know- What are you saying?”
“I’m saying- fuck!” Dean pulls at his hair, spinning in a half-circle. “I love you. I’ve loved you since the moment I first laid eyes on you and- oh, screw it!”
He reaches out and this time Cas isn’t ready. He snatches his keys from Cas’s hand and swiftly unlocks the car door.
It’s not until the engine is roaring to life that Cas moves, stumbling away from the car but Dean doesn’t allow himself to look at Cas’s face. He throws the car in drive and pulls through the parking spot, foot dropping heavily on the pedal the second he has a clean shot at the road.
Don’t you just love an angsty ending??? Leave it as is, or part two?
