Doing It Wrong On Purpose: Episode 1 - The Un-Ship

Today's experiment: What happens if I prompt for something, and then negative prompt all the main keywords, plus various synonyms and related words?

The answer: Some gloriously weird stuff.

For example, let's look at a negative cat:

Positive prompt: A cat on a windowsill during a storm

Negative prompt: Cat, feline, felidae, kitty, kitten, animal, pet, windowsill, window, glass, pane, house, storm, rain, water, lightning, thunder, clouds, torrent, downpour, snow, blizzard, wind, windy

Interesting! Let's get a little more fantasy with it and try for an anti-deer:

Positive prompt: A deer in a peaceful flowery meadow, crystals, midnight, fantasy, colorful

Negative prompt: Deer, cervidae, animal, elk, moose, stag, doe, fawn, reindeer, antelope, cervid, antlers, flowers, night, dark, trees, foliage, bloom, stars, night, tranquil, fantastic, vibrant, cool, magic, blue, moon, sky, crystal, stone, statue, topiary, floral, blossom

Between these two experiments, including a few dozen other generations that remain unposted, one thing I can say for sure is that for living subjects, it's a great way to get the kind of anatomical wonk that older models are (in)famous for - and it makes sense why, the model is trying to make something that looks like a certain subject...but once it starts to look too much like it, well, shit, we told it NOT to do that! Break something up! Given that I love that kind of wonk, I think I've found a useful tool for myself.

One more living subject, and let's get even more abstract with our direction here:

Positive prompt: mind horse

Negative prompt: horse, equine, colt, filly, mare, stallion, bronco, pony, mind, brain, thought, essence, psyche, intelligence, consciousness, imagination, dream, soul, visualization, intellect, wit, cognizance

Now let's try something that isn't alive. One thing I love AI for is surreal settings and landscapes - lets try one now!

Positive prompt: A magic palace garden made of crystal and gold

Negative prompt: Palace, magic, crystal, gold, fantasy, castle, estate, stronghold, temple, garden, flowers, plants, blossoms, bloom, blooms, trees, grass, stems, foliage, leaves, greenery, branches, bush, bushes, hedge, hedges, metal, luxury, stone, glass, brass, rose, polished, jewel, prism, courtyard

I then tried to see if, learning from the animal subjects, I could make it more likely to return one of my favorite "mistakes" - making it impossible to discern the point where a water area ends and a sky area begins. I wasn't immediately successful, but I came up with some results I found pleasing regardless-

Positive prompt: Secret hideout in a cave behind a waterfall in the foggy forest on a floating sky island in fluffy clouds

Negative prompt: hideout, camp, campsite, home, abode, house, dwelling, rest, shelter, waterfall, water, cave, grotto, forest, woods, woodland, trees, fountain, cascade, pond, stream, lake, river, brook, puddle, creek, pool, beach, ocean, sea, cloud, clouds, sky, cumulus, cirrus, nimbus, fog, storm, rain, sunshower, falls

It seems that with landscapes it's got a much clearer and more specific "idea" of what a [SUBJECT] without [SUBJECT] looks like; it's more inclined to invent very specific, very consistent unasked for related elements. With the animals, I was tweaking the weight on the positive prompt to avoid getting straightforwardly just what I had positive (and negative) prompted, but with landscapes, I just get... almost something else entirely.

So how about inanimate objects? Let's try a ship, perhaps?

Positive prompt: A huge sailing ship with brilliant prismatic crystal sails on a stormy, turbulent sea of sunset clouds

Negative prompt: ship, boat, sailboat, sailing ship, pirate ship, galleon, ketch, schooner, sloop, cutter, sail, sea, ocean, storm, wind, rain, water, waves, cloudy, clouds, fog, sunset, dusk, dawn, sunrise, twilight, evening

...okay, I'm in love with the un-ship. It truly does manage to consistently give me results that look like, yet entirely unlike, a ship. It is everything I love about AI as a medium. More than that, it is my friend.

At lower positive prompt weights, they only get even more beautifully chaotic.

I want to live on one of these (in an alternate universe where they're geometrically possible and structurally sound, that is).

Failing that, I will be featuring them a lot from now on.

goodbye february!

listening

night beats by hex. @slothshark has done a much better writeup of the aural soundscape than me (partially deaf) ever could. it sounds like its cover art. it knocked my fuckin socks off. this thing is SO textured, it's like taking a nylon scrubber to the inside of my skull (in a very good way). the way the reverb and the slight feedback blend is just. mwah. also features a close cousin of the morricone WAH WAH WAH wail!

reading

raymond chandler's the big sleep. once again i trust that we are all adults who know that many genre works, including this one, are very much products of their time. however this one is exceptionally racist and homophobic for its time. chandler can't quite make up his mind how he feels about Jews.

it reads very much like a first novel, the plot and pacing unfold like a colt getting up. i like the solution of the book much more, but even though the movie's plot is a little less coherent it has more Vibes. another first novel problem is that it's a little embarrassed of itself-- this line dampens every cool line aferwards.

"Neat, huh?" Brody said. "Just kind of stand up a minute. Come forward just about two yards. You might grab a little air while you're doing that." His voice was the elaborately casual voice of the tough guy in pictures. Pictures have made them all like that.

which immediately dampens the following lines and every cool line thereafter in the book

"Tsk, tsk," I said, not moving at all. "Such a lot of guns around town and so few brains. You're the second guy I've met within hours who seems to think a gat in the hand means a world by the tail. Put it down and don't be silly, Joe."

a baffling choice the movie makes, which makes it far less coherent, is changing vivian's husband from the missing sean ryan to rutledge, Some Guy she's divorced who is never seen on screen or mentioned again. i'm not sure why this adaptational choice was made but probably a censor issue? maybe howard hawks thought marlowe would look bad if he went after a woman who was looking for her missing husband? in the movie marlowe already makes a pass at nearly every woman he meets except carmen, who is barely grown and frankly doesn't hold a fucking candle to her sister vivian.

how'd i find this: the big sleep was the first movie i watched this year and i have not been able to stop thinking about it for two months. i think i slightly prefer dashiell hammet's prose to chandler's, but chandler wrote some of my favorite short stories.

this movie ended with a fascinating early piece of spoiler culture: “The management of this theater suggests that for the greater entertainment of your friends who have not yet seen the picture, you will not divulge to anyone the secret of the ending of Witness for the Prosecution.”

when i watch movies made by directors i already know i like, i have a good time! who would have thought!

another fucking scintillating Wilder movie to showcase some of the greatest character work ive ever seen. despite (maybe because of) the numerous twists, it’s one of the fairest mysteries ive ever seen. i don't think knowing the twist spoils the film, bc it's really know what happens but HOW it happens, but i find myself reluctant to discuss the ending at all.

how'd i find this: had kanopy credits to use up, thought this would be a good movie to knit to. partially right bc i got a fuck of a lot of rows done bc i was knitting faster and faster as it careened along. there was a cramp in my jaw from clenching my teeth so hard.

still fuckin around and finding out in fallo/ut 4, still in beautiful postapoc maine.

the lighthouse at brooke's head fixed itself and now at the proper distance from the ground. did not go inside bc i was overencumbered by like five hundred pounds and wanted to go finish my house on longfellow's little islet.

hi valentine. the proportions are. not ideal and i probably should have built it facing the inner harbor for maximum hurricane resistance. it is not the most efficient house i have ever built, bc it only has three bedrooms. however! i imagine it is the main hub for supplies coming in and out of my far harbor settlements/a meeting place for the islanders. hence the enormous table and extra bar stools behind the counter. this first one is looking back toward the front door.

i guess ppl could crash on the trio of couches if they needed to. when you walk into the ground floor, you pass a narrow but deep kitchen, and a little pantry and separate full bath that split off the main living/dining bookcase area like so.

the upstairs has one Very large bedroom for a couple, two smaller bedrooms with armor and gun workbenches, and another full bath. plus a little seating area jammed into the spot behind the stairs and a continuation up the stairs of the "weapons i don't want to sell but don't want to carry around" wall. this house is too bright, doesn't have enough stuff on the walls/enough chairs everywhere to be a real new england house, plus the stairs are very much up to code. but i do like it.

my fucking KINGDOM for washers and dryers as buildable objects in the base game. also my fucking KINGDOM for a bay window as a buildable object in the base game.

in other making news, i would rec these white bean/kale/rice bowls. surprisingly easy to make bc all you have to do is make rice and wilt some kale and then assemble a bunch of stuff. i did not add walnuts bc i do not like them, i did not add feta bc the grocery budget is a little tight this month, and i did not make the viniagrette from scratch bc i had a perfectly good one in the fridge. i did not think this was going to be filling and resigned myself to huge portions, but this is surprisingly filling i guess bc beans and rice are a complete protein? my primary care doc will love this for me bc 1) vegetarian and 2) v heart healthy. i would definitely up the rice to two or even two and a half cups, bc i assembled four bowls at once for lunch/dunner and they were a little scant on the rice. luckily i had a fuckoff huge bunch of kale to make up for it.

will be making it again bc it requires shockingly little prep and (once you've bought the giant jar of sun dried tomatoes) pretty cheap.

Book review: Horse by Geraldine Brooks

I thought this one was good on the whole. It is about the racehorse Lexington, who won 6 of 7 races and became the leading US sire for 16 years, and his groom Jarret. The book’s chapters change point of view frequently to include both major and minor characters, and the time also changes, spanning from 1850 when the horse was born to the present. There are some additional characters of both major and minor importance without chapters devoted to them. The book is extremely well researched, and in the afterward Brooks explains which people and events were fictionalized and which were real. She also has a vast vocabulary, and I learned many news words. My main criticism is that the relationship between Jess and Theo felt contrived at times in regards to racial issues and some other things. The characters of Theo and Jarret are also practically perfect, to the point where Theo is martyred at the end. Again, it just felt contrived at times.

The characters who have their own chapters are as follows:

Theo - a well educated and polite PHD student who lives in Washington D.C. in the present day. He is the son of 2 diplomats and has an international background. He helps a widowed woman across the street from him, even though she has been racist towards him. She begrudgingly says he can take whatever he wants from a pile of junk she has at the curb. While initially disinterested, he caught sight of an old painting of a horse and decided to take it.

Jarret - Jarret is the son of a Harry Lewis, a thoroughbred training prodigy. Harry Lewis was enslaved, but was allowed to buy himself freedom. Jarret is still enslaved, but Harry convinced his employer Dr. Warfield to buy him so they could be together. Harry had the idea to breed Warfield’s mare Alice Carneal to the leading sire Boston, who later died that year. Thus, Lexington was born, although he was originally named Darley. Warfield gave the horse to Harry as part of his wages, and Jarret and him were together from the time the colt was born. Jarret was Lexington's groom, and he was sold with Lexington twice.

Thomas J Scott - a famous painter of thoroughbreds who included accurate depictions of Jarret with Lexington in some of the paintings he did of the stallion. He knew Jarret and the horse from the beginning, and they crossed paths again over the years. Scott is the artist of the horse painting Theo found, which turned out to be of Lexington. Theo takes an interest in his works because his thesis is about cases where African Americans actually were depicted accurately in the works of that time.

Jess - An Australian who moves to America to work at the Smithsonian, Jess is obsessed with bones. Her job is to clean and set various animal skeletons for the museum in the osteology prep lab she manages. She is asked to locate the skeleton of a horse that has been forgotten about and moved to the attic. The horse turns out to be Lexington. She eventually crosses paths with Theo, and the two date after a rocky start where she thought he might be trying to steal her bike, which was actually his and turned out to be identical to hers.

Mary Bar Clay - she is one of the granddaughters of Elisha Warfield who lives on his farm. Her father is Cassius Clay, an American politician and abolitionist. She is a great rider and wants to be friends with Jarret, often putting him in dangerous situations as a result.

Martha Jackson - a high end art dealer in Jackson Pollack’s circle who rose to prominence in the 1950s. One of Scott’s paintings of Lexington came into her possession, and it was the only non-contemporary work she owned.

Prompt #11: Betrayal Pairing: CM Punk/Dia Banks (OC) Mentions Of: Colt Cabana, Bash Ryland (OC), Cassidy Cabana (OC) Verse: Main

The definition of insanity was allowing yourself to do the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result each time. Dia Banks was very familiar with that saying. Each time 𝒉𝒆 had come back into her life, she had always acted as if he were going to change. Each time, 𝒉𝒆 had shown to her that there was no chance he was a different man.

It was the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled, after all, and each time Phil Brooks showed up in her life, Dia allowed the devil to lie to her just a little bit more.

It was why she was so angry that she allowed herself to show up to this dinner, after being sent a text from an unknown number, simply giving her the name of the pizza place in Chicago. After seeing the name of the restaurant, she didn't need to know anything else. The last time she had been there was during her training as a member of the Second City Saints. Everything in Dia told her to tell her Colt where she was going, to tell her Bash where she was going.

There was a betrayal in the fact that she hadn't told them where she was headed.

Dia 𝒌𝒏𝒆𝒘 she shouldn't be here right now. She knew even as she moved towards the little table in the back, the same table she had once met Phil at early on in her early career without the rest of the Saint's knowledge, that she shouldn't be here. There he sat, hat pulled down low and playing on his phone. How dare he look so peaceful, especially in this light. How 𝒅𝒂𝒓𝒆 he text her to come to this place that had once meant so much to the two of them. Had Brawl Out meant nothing? Had the way he humiliated both her and her son not been enough to sour her on the man?

And then he looked up at her with that boyish smirk, playing with the lip ring between his teeth, "Hey Di."

Dia slid into the seat across from Phil, "What do you want? What could you possibly want?"

Phil reached across the table, placing a hand on hers with a charming smile, "C'mon, Di. Don't be like this."

She drew in a sharp and slow breath, "Be like what? Be worried that this is all a trick from you?"

HIs eyes scanned to the bag next to him and the smirk on his lips was a little more sinister, "A trick? Diamond, you know me better than that."

"I know you well enough to know that's the kinda man you are," Dia blanched at the use of her real name, quickly pulling her hand away from him. Gods he was so 𝒇𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈. A waiter brought two drinks to the table, along with a full size pizza. A small smile took her lips, before she banished it, "How did-"

"Mt. Dew and an Italian special," Phil smirked as he stole a piece for himself, "it's the same thing we ordered the first time we came here. People don't change, Di. They just get better at hiding their spots."

A flash of recognition hit Dia as she took the first bite of pizza. Phil's eyes had glanced to that red bag again and Dia felt uneasy. What was in there? What was he hiding from her? "Cass changed. Since he started hanging around Adam, he-"

"He hasn't changed. He still hasn't told you the truth," Phil shrugged one shoulder, "I guess we've had enough chit-chat, huh? I came to warn you."

"Warn me?" Dia raised an eyebrow before sipping her drink, "About what?"

"In this bag," Phil began, scooting back to tap the rep bag next to him, "is something that will ruin your sons reign. I'm gonna tell the world at Collision. When The WWE rolls into the Windy City for Payback 2014, John Cena goes against his better judgment and goes sees Rhett Brooks, the one woman that he couldn't get off of his mind. And after seeing her and meeting their son, everything changes and his relationship with Nikki Bella suffers.

Rhett Brooks sighed pushing her long bangs behind her ears, today was a never-ending day of crap and it had gotten worse when she found that the WWE was in town, a company that she had a love-hate relationship with. And that was mostly due to the way they had treated her and her brother during her short tenure there, the emotions grew deeper when she ended her rocky relationship with now 15-time World Champion John Cena. A relationship she swore she would never get into, she had refused to date wrestlers from the get-go, and yet she found herself drawn into him like a moth to a flame.

A dangerous flame that she ended up getting burned by.

The flame that her brother and Colt had warned her about and warned her about time after time. But she didn't listen, she never did. She liked doing things on her own and a majority of the time she got burned but it was the best way she learned.

"You know if you want something to do. You can always wipe down tables." Rhett's long-time friend Natalie said looking at her.

Rhett turned her attention to her and gave her a tense smile, "If I have too."

Natalie held out a towel for her, "Get to working.'

"Yeah, yeah." She muttered putting the damp towel on the sticky table and started wiping the table down.

The little bell tolling over the door minutes later caused Rhett to pause and look up from what she was doing.

"John." She breathed.

"Hey Rhett, got a minute?"

Terror-filled green eyes went from her former flame to Natalie who nodded her head, she was one of the few people that supported Rhett being with John and trying to follow in her famous big brother's footsteps.

Rhett nodded her head and shakily sat down on the padded chair.

"You look good." John complimented letting his blue eyes trail over her form before sinking down across from her.

"So do you. Skank looks good on you."

"Hey." John said, his demeanor changing quickly.

"Truth hurts doesn't it?" She asked folding her arms under her chest, "You were all serious with me then you cheated on me with Nikki Bella and your high school sweetheart. "

"I am sorry." He started holding his hands up.

"Oh you are sorry that's really rich John! What's next you are going to tell me you are sorry that you missed our child's birth because you were too busy getting her a boob job.' Rhett said, her green eyes flashing.

John's frown deepened, this is not how he wanted this visit to go he wanted to see her and get her out of his head and then go back to his relationship with Nikki.

But now that he saw her he wanted to stay with her and find out about his child and know what she was up to.

"How is our child?"

"Our son JP, is fine, he is with his uncle Punk and Aunt April they are taking him to the hockey game tonight."

"JP?"

"Jonathan Philip. He loves his Uncle Punk." She pulled out her phone and pressed the button showing him the small boy with her piercing green eyes and his dimples and dark blonde hair sitting on his uncle's lap watching a movie.

"He is.'

"He is you." Rhett said, "With parts of his uncles sprinkled in. He is my whole world."

"Does he know about me?" He asked.

Rhett licked her lips and stole a glance at Natalie who nodded her head, "He does know who you are. But he doesn't know you are daddy. You made it clear that you didn't want to be a father and I am not going to force it on you. In fact, you say it all the time on Total Divas with Nikki. Tell me John why is it that you don't want those things with her and you were willing to do it all with me?' She asked folding her arms under her chest.

John lowered his eyes down to the table, he never really had the answer for it. He never did. Nikki asked him all the time about it.

"Does she even know that we have a kid?"

"No." He stared.

"Really rich John. You want to sit there and like you are a good guy but you aren't."

"Because Rhett at the time I could see myself settling down and having a family with you."

Rhett laughed bitterly and raised her eyes to the ceiling. Starting to count the cracks in it. Anything to distract her from the pain that was surfacing again.

"I could. Liz was a mistake, she talked me into marrying her, she found the ring I bought for you and thought it was for her."

Rhett lowered her eyes and looked at him.

"What?'

"Yeah, I was ready to have you move in with me and marry you. I even went as far as to ask your brother for permission.'

A small laugh escaped Rhett's lips, "Oh Punk must have gotten a kick out of that."

"He did, he was protective of his little sister."

"He still is. He was with me when JP was born, he and Colt traded off going with me to doctor's appointments and parenting classes."

"She use to joke that it was their baby and not hers because they were so involved in it." Natalie piped up from behind the counter.

John nodded his head with a slight laugh, "I want to meet him."

"I don't know John, I don't want to get his hopes up, you have Nikki in your life and you are gone 300-plus days a year.'

"Please." He begged, and he tried not to beg often but he knew he had to, he needed to meet his son once and see what he was like.

Rhett shook her head and looked at Natalie again for support but she shrugged her shoulders.

"Please." He repeated looking at her.

She sucked her bottom lip between her teeth and nodded her head, "Come by before you leave tomorrow, Punk is bringing him over after the hockey game."

"Thank you, Rhett," he said covering her hand with his ignoring the familiar flip of his heart in his chest.

She pulled her hand away and stood up from the table. “Just don’t make me regret it, John. My son doesn’t need a broken heart and neither do I.”
