For the meme:
The scene where Obi-Wan and Anakin make their way through the Jedi temple in Wake lives in my head rent-free!
I really like that scene! It's not a trope I do a lot with these days, but I love sentient (haunted, to some extent) buildings and that was one of my earliest Star Wars incarnations of it. Wake postdates the Disney buyout but predates the reorganization of canon, so at the time that fic was written it hadn't yet been established that the Jedi Temple had become the Imperial Palace. (Wake will be ten years old this year.) The scenes in Crown of the Temple-turned-Palace are to some extent the direct descendant of the Wake scene.

Gladiator Week 2 is slowly coming to an end. Anyone who still wants to take part is free to do so.
Thank you for @comentter for taking part as well. Enjoyed reading your posts=).
Thank you for everyone who read and liked our posts.
And thanks to Seyary for letting me do this, for your reblogs and tags=).
For me, it was very important to be honest with my posts and opinions. I also realized, in this week as well as while re-reading, how some views and opinions can change over the years. I mean, I was around 18 when I started reading and six years have past since then.
I enjoyed this week as much as I did the last time. Who knows, maybe one day we can do something similar again^^.
Thank you for keeping up with my "I also's, I would's..."etc.;) I wrote too much...

What do you think the general public is taught about the Force, especially in the Prequel era?
This is such an interesting question!  We know in the OT era that anything that taught about the Force (not just the Jedi, but apparently anything with the Force) was shut down by the Empire and the people just suddenly “disappeared”.  Even then, you’ll have stuff like the Rebels comic (though, I’m not sure if this is canon or not?) where the bounty hunters trying to kidnap Ezra are like, “THE JEDI AGE BACKWARDS!  THEY HAVE DENSER BONES!” because they have no idea what a Jedi actually is, much less what the Force is.We know there were museums dedicated to teaching about the Force that were shut down by the Empire and the owners mysteriously “disappeared” (The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear!), we know that the Phirmists believe in the Force in some format (From a Certain Point of View, Join the Resistance) but it’s not clear how accurate they are, Mattis from JTR certainly isn’t right about how the Force works. We know in the ST there are some people around, but they’re often filled with Empire propaganda that a lot of people still doesn’t even know is propaganda.  (Mattis from JTR again.)During the PT, we have a few clues that show it seems to be complicated, that there were many different Force traditions that grew in parallel to the Jedi (see a list here), but comics like Age of the Republic: Qui-Gon Jinn#1 and Mace Windu - Jedi of the Republic show that the public doesn’t really get what the Jedi are/do.We know from the Mace comic that the Jedi had outreach centers on planets who needed them, we know from Queen’s Shadow that parts of the Jedi Temple were open to the public for visitors, but we don’t really know how much anyone had any kind of accurate idea of what the Force was.My feeling is that information was available, if you did your homework on it, but that a lot of people just sort of speculated on it instead.  It’s sort of a fascinating parallel to fandom in that sense, where the canon and the creators have laid out how the Force works, but you rarely see people talking about that, instead speculating on how they think it works, what would make it interesting to them.  (This is not a value judgement on fandom speculation, btw!  Just an observation that we have commentary from George Lucas explaining the Force, but it rarely seems to make it into worldbuilding, whether in speculation or in fic.  But fandom is not obligated to be beholden to George Lucas by any means!)Force-sensitivity in people was incredibly rare, that the level of strength needed for a Jedi was one in billions of people, that the entire population of Earth would have anywhere from 0.3 to maybe 1 Jedi on our entire planet.  One Jedi for the ENTIRE PLANET, not just every country, not just every continent, but the ENTIRE PLANET.  Low-level Force-sensitivity is probably more common, but Jedi spent their entire lives studying the Force and still could only understand slivers of it, anyone who just sort of vaguely felt it and had extra-good reflexes or gut feelings on stuff, probably had no idea what it was and they probably didn’t seek much of it out.So, my feeling about what people knew of the Force in the PT is that maybe half of the people knew that it existed, that it was strongly associated with the Jedi, but they had no idea how it actually worked, that speculation was far more rampant than genuine looking into it, so there was A LOT of misinformation that went around.  I think it was probably something that wasn’t taught because there wasn’t a use for teaching it, but it was available if you went looking, but most people were too busy or uninterested in doing that, especially as lives got busier and harder as corruption in the Senate grew.

Well, you are offering: Blackbird 2, 3, 4, 5 ,11 and 12
Well @comentter I certainly did offer (and thank you for taking up the challenge), so let’s get started! This gets long. Sorry, not sorry.
2: What scene did you first put down?
The first scene I put down … I’m not sure. I wrote all of the Origin chapters (and I mean all of them) before I even started posting the story, but … I’m pretty sure it was the ‘Kasmir death’ scene. That, or the ‘Kasmir describes the sky to blind Caleb’ scene. (You’re about to start seeing a trend here lol)
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
My favorite line of narration … uh, that’s hard out of 250k worth of content but … probably this entire paragraph out of Chapter 7:
The Kalleran continued to tell him about the sky and what it looked like, what the colors were as they bled into one another before fading into inky blue, and in Caleb’s mind, in his imagination, he could see it, all of it. He knew it was embellished by all the memories he’d collected of the night sky across the galaxy, on all the planets he’d visited. He knew his imagination paled in comparison to seeing the real thing … but it was alright. With Kasmir’s help he imagined something almost real, and he valued the fabrication as much as he valued the real thing. He was quietly thankful to Kasmir for painting the sky for him, the first sky he had experienced in almost half a year.
There was a certain pure and innocent magic that came with writing this particular bit that has always been one of my favorite parts of the entire story, and still sticks out in my mind. It’s the final beautiful, happy moment Caleb has in his new life before it all begins to tank. It’s very special.
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
Ah, this one’s easy because it was the most tailored and emotionally loaded bit of story I wrote (next to the entire Forgiveness chapter in the temple, which is its own affair entirely).
“I like it,” Kasmir finally said, a small, satisfied smile pulling at his lips as his body fully relaxed. “Kanan.”
The Kasmir death scene butchered me, but these four little words are my favorite bit of dialogue because it’s essentially Kasmir baptizing Caleb into his new life as Kanan, which is the final act of his life. I sobbed writing this particular bit (this entire chapter in fact). When I was done writing it, I’d conned myself into believing that’s what actually happened in canon.
I’m always very relieved Kasmir is, in fact, still alive in canon.
5: What part was hardest to write?
The hardest part to write in Blackbird, by far, was the Thrawn chapter. You guys don’t even know how many hours went into planning and orchestrating Chapter 25 so it would be as clever and as brilliant as I could make it and Thrawn (this was before I’d gotten a more solid handle on Thrawn’s character too). I was so worried about that chapter and if it would fly or sink. You have no idea.
It did encourage me to write more Thrawn though.
11: What do you like best about this fic?
What do I like best about Blackbird? Frankly, it was getting to interact with you readers and learning better how to be a part of the fandom (something I’d never done before). It was kind of a springboard into that. This fic helped me find and make some pretty great friends :]
That, and it taught me I could finish an epic-length story while also teaching me about the editing process. It’s its own other post about all the things writing this fic taught me. Hopefully one day I’ll convince myself to write about it lol.
12: What do you like least about this fic?
There’s not really anything I didn’t like about this fic, to be honest. I wrote it as best I could to the best of my ability, and I wrote it my way. It’s hard to feel ashamed about anything in Blackbird when it was literally all I had to give as a writer and creator.
The only thing I really disliked about the fic was how long it took to write it. I’m an impatient person and I usually like to have projects done in about three months. This took its sweet time (over a year) to complete. Staying motivated and on track, reconciling my limitations when I had to take breaks and hiatus’s, and not aborting the story during those times it felt like no one in the world was reading it was the probably the thing I liked least about this fic.
Thanks for all the questions! I love talking about Blackbird. I really need to write some posts about the whole experience of writing it one of these days :]

Oh, my love, if it’s all I can do, I’ll take the fall for you Cause I will soar when I lay down with you And give my all for you
COUNTDOWN: 6 days to Gladiator’s Seventh Anniversary
… Woopsie. I suppose you may have wondered why this one looked like it was of lower quality/resolution than the others. Weeeeeell, I’d been plotting that wicked surprise from the moment I started pondering how to depict this arc.
This one is definitely in my top 3 arcs in this first half of Part 2. From the moment I first plotted it properly I knew it would be a wild ride and I enjoyed it from start to finish. There was so much strife, so many complications, and as ever, Sokka and Azula’s relationship only kept strengthening as things moved along. They moved along so much Sokka outright asked Azula to marry him despite knowing it’d be impossible for them just yet xD But just as things between them were reaching their highest heights… they hit their lowest of lows when Azula found the love of her life bleeding to death after a confrontation with their mysterious enemies.
I had too many things I wanted to feature in this artwork and I knew there was no way I could represent the duality of this arc without making it, as @comentter put it when I told him about it, a bit of a two-sides-of-one-coin artwork xD and that’s why it’s a GIF instead of the usual poster. On one side, the threat of the White Lotus looms in the shadows, menacing over Azula and Sokka. June, despite my initial convictions that she wouldn’t come back in the rest of the story past chapter 38, ended up becoming an essential element for this arc when I started plotting it in earnest, so she had to be featured in this artwork too, as well as poor Rui Shi, Sokka and Azula’s eternal third wheel xD yet he, as well, underwent some really important growth in this arc. The small scene at the bottom and center of the first side is Azula’s encounter with Aunt Wu, where she receives a rather disturbing prediction…
And then the dark side of the coin: the White Lotus, unmasked, wreaks all sorts of havoc over our leading couple and their allies/friends. The stakes had never been quite this high for Azula and Sokka, and he was never quite as close to death as he was in this arc. Without that quick, last-minute cauterization, well… the story would have certainly ended a while ago :’D Rui Shi wasn’t quite as wounded as Sokka but the sight of Azula covered in Sokka’s blood, begging him for help most certainly turned his world upside down. And of course, June was badly injured by the White Lotus when they caught her, her shoulder was dislocated (I even looked up what dislocated shoulder bruises look like! Though I may not have imitated it properly but I tried… :’D), and her beloved Nyla was stolen from her. And I must ask you all to please cut me some slack for not drawing Nyla, there was no room left in the artwork! xD The last scene, opposite to Azula and Aunt Wu, is Azula now sitting by Sokka’s bedside, anxious beyond belief as she waits for him to wake up…
Oh, so many emotions, such a complicated roller-coaster, and I, for one, can barely believe I made my vision for this arc into a reality :’D But I’m really glad for it. As for the song chosen this time around, I used it when I was plotting it, I used it while writing, and to this day I listen to it and only think about this arc. A love so strong that you would give up anything for the other person… it applies perfectly to how both Azula and Sokka feel about each other after all this time.
Well, this one is the second most ambitious artwork of this new collection! Hope you enjoyed it! The full-resolution artworks of both sides are under the cut!

I am BACK from vacation! And that means I’m going to start turning that 1,155 word summary into the next and final? chapter!
But First!
Thanks to a discussion with the lovely @comentter, I made some adjustments to the end of Chapter 12 and the beginning of Chapter 14. Now, Chapter 12 ends with both Hera and Free Ryloth racing to get to Kanan’s escape pod first. This way, readers won’t know who makes it until the end of Chapter 13. (Chapter 14′s new beginning is just a smoother transition.) Now the events are MUCH more exciting and the suspense is raised EVEN MORE!
I am very grateful to Comentter for helping me to see how, where, and why to do this. Further proof that...
your comments help me write a better story.
Thank you!

What's your favourite book series?
S.M. Stirling's Emberverse/Change series, with Martha Wells' Raksura series very close on its heels. I'm in the middle of a Raksura reread right now. (Murderbot's great, but I like the Rakusra books a little more.)

I had an assumption at some point, but I can't think of it right now! On this topic though, when you share personal things like dealing with your toxic friend and how that impacted your writing at the time, I can usually see afterwards how it reflects in the story. Otherwise in one of the last chapters I read, you made your stance on US politics obvious which I found very entertaining :)
after eight years in Star Wars writing in the MCU is wild because it's -- well, it's SORT OF the real world. (sometimes I think about how the events of CACW would have affected the 2016 U.S. presidential election.)

For the ask game: J for Backbone, Wake and Gambit (if you had any alternative endings in mind for them at all) and R
J: Write or describe an alternative ending to [insert fic].
Backbone never had an alternate ending, neither did Wake. Gambit at one point was supposed to end with a version of Code Word Retribution/Order 66 being carried out in the Gambitverse, so basically massacres in the Naboo throne room, on Alderaan, at the CIS Congress, but I thought it was too depressing and couldn't figure out what to do with the Wake trio there. Kept the Naboo throne room massacre but it ended up not being Amidala there, obviously, and that's in the middle of the fic.
Normally I don't write so stories can have alternate endings -- because of the way I have keystone scenes I don't tend to write to a point where I can actually end in a different way. (I mean, I'm sure there are ways all of these stories could have ended differently, but that's not how I think of them!)
R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
oh, for sure! there are def fanfic authors who influenced me but I can't...think...of any...right now... though like, to some extent I still write my fanfic the way that was very common in the early/mid-'00s -- mostly in HP fandom during the Three Year Summer, but you saw it in BtVS and a few other fandoms too, which was a tendency to do very plotty fic that I feel is slightly less common these days, and that was when I started in fandom so that's the fic genre I write.
for pro authors...I mean, there are a lot. Tamora Pierce, Diana Wynne Jones, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Barbara Hambly, Mercedes Lackey, Martha Wells, S.M. Stirling, GRRM, Diana Gabaldon, Robin McKinley...I tend to fixate on single authors for various reasons and don't read a lot outside them, and there are bits and pieces of them in everything I write, some of them more so than others. (You can always tell when I've been reading more Hambly lately because my prose shifts slightly. Some of them I don't really reread -- I can't remember the last time I read Burroughs, for example -- but they were such big influences that saying, yeah, I grew up reading Burroughs, has led a few people to go, oh wow, that explains so much about you.)
