"Conrack" (1974) is a biographical drama based on the book "The Water Is Wide" by Pat Conroy. Conroy was a teacher assigned to an isolated Yamacraw Island (Daufuskie Island) off South Carolina's coast and populated mainly by poor black families. The children needed to be made aware of the outside world, and their education levels needed to be improved. They couldn't read, write, count, or spell their names, didn't know where they were, and were completely unaware of the world surrounding them. Jon Voight plays Pat Conroy, but due to the Gullah dialect, the children pronounce his name as Conrack. Voight has the support of a great cast that includes Madge Sinclair, Paul Winfield, Hume Cronyn, Tina Andrews, and Antonio Fargas. The children in the movie were from Brunswick, Georgia, at C.B. Greer Elementary School.
This movie has a feel-good story with lots of educational value. Aside from some of the messages implemented by Conroy throughout the film, the history surrounding the conditions of the Gullah people is worth further exploration. Even Magde Sinclair's character as the principal used dated practices in the classroom. "We are off the plantation, Mrs. Scott, and I'll be damn if you turn me into an overseer." Conroy is a liberal individual reformed from the ideologies that he used to carry. In his new teaching environment, he employs various tactics to reach the children, and the education develops into something outside of school books.
It's easy to dismiss this as another white savior movie narrative, but it's a good film and story with some worthy discussion topics. It's sincere and honest. The scenery is stunning in the movie. If you're familiar with the Lowcountry region of the U.S., then landscaping will be nostalgic to you when you see the film. I highly recommend this movie for viewing.
Director: Martin Ritt Writers: Pat Conroy, Irving Ravetch, Harriet Frank Jr.
Starring Jon Voight, Paul Winfield, Madge Sinclair, Tina Andrews, Antonio Fargas, Hume Cronyn, Ruth Attaway, James O'Rear, Gracia Lee, C.P. MacDonald, Jane Moreland, Thomas Horton, Nancy Butler, Robert W. Page
Storyline In this uplifting drama based on the memoir "The Water is Wide," Pat Conroy (Jon Voight) accepts a teaching position on an isolated island in South Carolina. There, he finds a class of illiterate students and takes on the challenge of educating them. Conroy contradicts the lax institutional standards and exposes his students to various topics. Still, those in power do not take kindly to his efforts.

The big liberal heart of Martin Ritt started beating 107 years ago today. A few of his films:
Sounder (1972). A simple story of a depression era sharecropper family whose father, Nathan (Paul Winfield) is arrested for stealing a ham. His wife Rebecca (Cicely Tyson) sends the oldest boy David Lee (Kevin Hooks) to visit him. He fails, but on the way home comes across a school whose teacher invites him to attend. Sometime later (in one of the most painfully joyous reunions cinema has given us) Nathan returns, injured and insists David Lee attend the school even though he’s needed on the farm. In a heartbreaking scene he tells the son “You lose some of the time what you go after but you use all of the time you don’t go after.” As good a film as I’ve ever seen.
Conrack (1974). Ritt tells the story of Pat Conroy (who would later write The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides) when he was a teacher assigned to South Carolina’s Yamacraw Island, an isolated impoverished area and his attempts to overcome years of neglect and try to light the merest spark amongst the children. Ritt directs Jon Voight and the children unsentimentally but vividly and without turning the story into a white savior narrative, tells a story, not of victory but of the satisfaction that can come of fighting the good fight.
Norma Rae (1979). Ritt saw something in Sally Field that others didn’t, and as a mill worker with a gossip-worthy past, who is recruited by a union organizer (Ron Liebman), she gives a peerless performance of a woman finding her strength as she goes along. Ritt catches the feel of a crowded factory, and the ways its management manipulated the workers to stifle dissent. And the scene where Norma holds up a sign saying “Union” is iconic for the right reasons. Her triumph comes from beginning the fight.

Doorways Into Darkness
Tumblr media
A forgotten city in Central Africa. Jedda recognizes the location as the location of the forgotten city but does not know the legend? The Phantom has to explain it to her (or to the viewer...). Jedda sitting at Dynak is rare, it’s usually Rick. A sign of Jedda Gordon, perhaps?
Tumblr media
Ming wants to open a door to alternate universes. Specifically, he wants to open one to the nightgiants.
Tumblr media
Ummm... who is this??
Tumblr media
The animation/drawing is not top notch in this episode. Also, Jedda wants to accompany her father but he brushes her off. It seems very strange. He usually does not act this way.
Tumblr media
This sneaks off to “help”. Oh boy!
Tumblr media
Luckily, for once Dynak was able to notice them and they get thrown out.
Tumblr media
Flash proves again that he is good with kids and gets Kshin to be excited to stay behind and help Jedda.
Tumblr media
Meet Conrack, king of the Nightworld
Tumblr media
Only three nightgiants appear.
Tumblr media
The Phantom and his pet wolf know the “legendary nightgiant”.
Tumblr media
The wolf’s “amulet” is glowing? Why?
Tumblr media
I guess three are more than enough. They are really doing damage to Central City. However, more nightgiants are coming. An invasion has begun.
Tumblr media
Phantom was very quick to fly back to Central City.
Tumblr media
Only to fly back to Africa again after an air battle with the nightgiants. Why couldn’t the other Defenders are taken care of the situation in Central City?
Tumblr media
Jedda is being the sensible one and tells the others to wait for Flash and Phantom. A few episodes ago she wasn’t listening to anyone and let Kisa out...
Tumblr media
Even their bags have the Defender “D” on them.
Tumblr media
Mandrake doesn’t seem to like being touched. After Lothar put his hands on his shoulder, he’s immediately seen to be brushing off... dirt? dust?
Tumblr media
A look into Mandrake’s garage. We see the red sportscar again that I’m sure is originally Jedda Gordon’s car.
Tumblr media
LJ is clearly annoyed at Kshin and Zuffy “helping” but... he takes them anyway.
Tumblr media
Mandrake owning an oldtimer car is actually quite fitting.
Tumblr media
In this scene, Rick’s t-shirt underneath his jacket is missing.
Tumblr media
Suddenly here’s Kisa. What happened to the wolf??
Tumblr media
LJ and Rick are creating a diversion. LJ still has Kshin with him but nobody seems to mind. Even as the nightgiant has LJ’s vehicle in hand, nobody mentions Kshin being there also.
Tumblr media
When Jedda, Rick and LJ are supposed to distract the ice robots, finally Mandrake asks Kshin to come into their car. He doesn’t seem mad that Kshin’s here.
Tumblr media
I suppose that’s a highway?
Tumblr media
Ramming the fence and just jumping onto another road is ridiculous, especially with this type of car and with a little kid in the backseat.
Tumblr media
“Jedda, hurry!” Sure... will she drive all the way to Central Africa now? Ok, no, she’s taking a space ship later on.
Tumblr media
Mandrake, Lothar and LJ saving Rick went almost too smoothly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A look at the mansion. It does look again like it did in earlier episodes. Only this time, there seems to be a small wood behind it?
Tumblr media
I always enjoy Phantom and Jedda reuniting.
Tumblr media
The wolf and Kisa seem to be friends also.
Tumblr media
“I have marked the secret entrance” - yes, nobody can miss THAT!
Tumblr media
8 tigers this time!
Tumblr media
Jedda succeeds but is captured afterwards.
Tumblr media
Phantom took care of a nightgiant.
This episode was... honestly I didn’t care about the nightgiants and their senseless destruction of Central City. I’m also confused about the wolf. While interesting, it wonder what it is doing here and why there is suddenly a script that featured a wolf? Did nobody notice that and point that out? Or did originally the Phantom did have a wolf? Maybe Kisa was introduced for the later version but the original version had the wolf and somehow that got mixed up? I like the idea of Mandrake owning an oldtimer car and then actually driving cars for once. Kshin was annoying. The “I want to help” could have come up once and it would have been fine, but anything more is just too many. Rescuing Rick was also way too easy. If the plot allows it, I guess everything can be fixed with an illusion.

Note
Themes like incest, kinslaying, oathbreaking are considered as sins and amoral in asioaf. But I think grrm is exploring many layers in it. If Gilly would have killed Craster to escape from rape would it be called sin? Jaime killed his king Aerys to stop his madness from killing everyone , was that immoral? Jon broke his oath to save his sister, was it wrong? I think grrm is asking to not see those things black and white.
Baby in our wildest moments We could be the greatest, we could be the greatest Maybe in our wildest moments We could be the worst of all [x]
***
Not all incest tho. Remember that Westeros was OK with cousins marriages (Tywin/Joanna, Rickard/Lyarra) and with aunt/uncle and nephew/niece marriages as well (Jonnel/Sansa). And the Targaryen brought their Valyrian tradition to marry brother and sister to Westeros via dragon threat and doctrines of exceptionalism as justification (meaning only them can do it, because dragons).
What is considered a sin in Westeros is the brother and sister, and parent with children incest, like Jaime/Cersei, and Craster and his daughters/wives.
But with kingslaying and oathbreaking, it seems that these general rules/commandments accept no exception, like self defense, life preservation, victim's fault, the greatest good, etc. Those rules are so sacred that they carry a punishment no matter what.
So you are right about GRRM asking his readers to not see those things black and white, with examples of Gilly, Jaime and Jon.
All those "problematic," "controversial," "radical," "immoral," "grey" decisions and actions are the result of what Martin's considers the only thing that is worth to write about: the human heart in conflict with itself.
He is also trying to tell us that we are capable of greatness but also capable to commit the most horrible crimes and abominations. That's how he writes his characters:
[...] They come in all varieties and even the individuals have good and evil within them. I’ve always tried to do that because I think that’s realistic, and I think we’re all grey. We all have good and bad in us, we’ve all done good things and we’ve all done bad things. And we can do, I mean, real history is full of stories about people who did something wonderful on Tuesday and something horrible on Thursday, same person.
There is a wonderful writer who passed away a few years ago, not a science fiction writer but, Pat Conroy. Have any of you ever read Pat Conroy? Terrific writer, one of the great writers I think of the 20th century. And he wrote… A lot of his books were made into movies, “The Great Santini”, “The Water is Wide”, which as made into the movie “Conrack,” based on his own experiences teaching, “The Lords of Discipline”. But probably the best known books of his is  “The Prince of Tides”, and I remember that book, that book has a character in it who is an absolutely abusive father, he terrorizes his children he abuses them both verbally and physically. He’s horrible to his wife, he’s really a despicable, horrible person. But there are flashbacks within that to World War II, about an American aviator flying a mission over Nazi Germany who was shot down, and that, he parachutes out to safety but now he’s in the middle of Nazi Germany and he has to get back to the lines. He makes his way though the German lines, you know, hiding in haystacks, and occasionally meeting Germans who try to turn him in, and the other Germans who are kind to him and hide him. And that, you know, it’s an interesting secondary storyline. It’s the same character, and you realize as you read this, you’re reading the story about this brave American aviator trying to make his way through the Nazi’s and to get back to the lines, and you’re really rooting for him, and you’re identifying with him, and you think he’s great, and then you get to the present day and he’s this horrible wretched person, based on Conrad’s own father, who was mistreating his family. And I loved that, I mean, the depth of character there. It was amazing, and the fact that Conrad did it so greatly. So that’s… that’s some of my views on characters.
