Tumblr media
Sonia Forsythe was a 13-year-old schoolgirl living in Belfast, Ireland. Her mother remembers her as a ‘beautiful girl inside and out’ and a loving and open girl.
Sonia’s body was found by workmen in April 1996 in her neighbour, James Junior McKinstry Craig’s, coal bunker, the body had been wrapped in carpet and left to decompose. Bloodstains were also found in Craig’s bedroom which matched Sonia’s DNA. In 1998, Craig was sentenced to life with a minimum of 21 years in prison for Sonia’s murder. At the time of Sonia’s death he had been living just a few houses away on the same street and had somehow convinced Sonia to enter his flat before beating her to death with a fire poker.

The Unsolved Murders of Patricia Campbell and Tina Anderson
Tumblr media
Patricia Campbell, 15, and Tina Anderson, 12, were schoolgirls and friends from Idaho, USA. Tina was described as bright and gifted, with excellent grades in school. Patricia, known as Patsy to her friends, was a cheerleader who enjoyed jogging and spending time with her sister, Melissa.
The girls were celebrating Pioneer Day on 22nd July 1978 at a local park. During the event, The girls had been seen walking around the park, talking with their friends and enjoying the celebrations. Patricia’s sister recalled seeing Patricia speaking with a man who she seemed to be familiar with, the man was wearing a hoodie and a large ring and Patricia had seemed ‘unbalanced’ and possibly under the influence, one of Patricia’s friends later admitted to smoking marijuana at the event with Patricia and Tina. Patricia and Tina left to buy corn dogs and were never seen again. When the girls failed to return the police were called, initially detectives believed the girls had run away despite both families stating the girls had never run away before, had left behind money, and were happy at home.
The skeletal remains of both girls were found in a remote location in October 1981, Tina’s skull was identified using dental records and while the other body was suspected to be that of Patricia based on scraps of clothing, her formal identification by DNA did not happen until 2007. Both girls had been shot.
What happened to Patricia and Tina remains a mystery- no suspects were ever arrested and no motives were suggested for their disappearance. The case remains unsolved.

The Murder of Siobhan McGuiness
Tumblr media
Siobhan McGuiness was a 5-year-old girl from Montana, she was described as always smiling and a happy girl.
In the early hours of 5th February 1974, Siobhan went missing during a short walk home from her friend’s house. On that same day another young girl had reported that an unidentified male had attempted to lure her into a shed but that she had got away.
Three days later, Siobhan’s body was found. She had been sexually assaulted, stabbed in the chest and badly beaten. Despite a reward fund being organised, no viable suspects or evidence could be found and the case gradually grew cold. DNA evidence was preserved from the crime scene but not matched.
In 2020, new DNA technology advancements allowed the FBI to develop a genetic profile of Siobhan’s killer who was officially identified as Robert William Davis, Siobhan’s family described their relief in finally knowing what had happened. Davis had died in 2012, he was never a suspect in the original investigation and was travelling through Montana for unknown reasons when Siobhan was murdered. The FBI suspect he may have murdered other children in multiple states as he was known to have travelled often, however he has not yet been named in relation to any other cases.

The Murder of Satomi Mitarai
Tumblr media
Satomi Mitarai 御手洗 怜美, Mitarai Satomi) was a 12-year-old schoolgirl who attended Okubo Elementary School in Nagasaki prefecture, Japan. Her murder is sometimes referred to as the Sasebo Slashing or the Nevada-tan murder as a picture thought to be of the killer wearing a University of Nevada jumper was circulated.
On the first June 2004, an 11-year-old schoolgirl referred to as Girl A, and Satomi Mitarai were alone in an empty classroom during their lunch hour. Girl A returned to her classroom covered in blood. The girls' teacher who noticed both girls were missing from the room found the body and called the police.
In custody Girl A confessed to the crime, cried and repeated she was sorry. She said that she and Satomi Mitarai had argued because of messages left on the Internet and that Satomi Mitarai had commented on her weight. Girl A had killed her by slitting her throat and arms with a box cutter.
Girl A was sent to a reformative institute and initially sentenced to 2 years of involuntary commitment, her sentence was later extended by two years on a psychological evaluation.
The case fuelled debate over the age of criminal responsibility in Japan. Girl A was thought of as a well-adjusted, normal child with a happy home which made the public more anxious as to how she could have committed the crime. It is not known what happened to Girl A after her release.

The Murder of Katy Hawkelka
Tumblr media
Katherine Hawkelka, known as Katy, was a 19-year-old Clarkson University student. She was the second oldest of four siblings.
Katy had recently arrived back at university to begin her second year of studies. On 1st September 1986, she was walking back to her apartment early in the morning when she was attacked. The attack happened outside the university's ice hockey arena, with the attacker initially struggling with Katy before smashing her head into the wall several times until she collapsed. When she was unconscious he then raped her, beat her so severely her family could not recognise her and then strangled her. Two security guards witnessed the beginning of the attack but failed to intervene, they later claimed they had thought it to be a couple having consensual sex. Hours later, the security guards returned to find Katy unconscious, she was rushed to hospital but never regained consciousness and died three days later.
Brian McCarthy, then 23, an unemployed carpenter was arrested and later pleaded guilty to the murder. The attack was said to have been completely random and he had not met Katy before. Katy's family spoke on the trauma the frequent appeals forced them to go through.

The Murder of Michele Avila
Tumblr media
Michele Yvette Avila, also known as Missy, was a 17-year-old American schoolgirl living in Los Angeles. She left with her mother and three brothers. She was described as sweet and friendly.
Michele became best friends with a girl in her class called Karen Severson when the two were eight years old. They remained friends until high school when they began to drift apart. Karen was jealous of Michele because she was considered prettier, more popular and received more male attention than Karen. Karen was also upset Michele was spending less time with her and more time with boys. Karen began spreading rumours that Michele was having sex with various boys in the school, as a result, a group of girls who had heard Michele had slept with their boyfriends beat Michele up.
In junior year, Michele began dating a boy named Randy but ended their relationship after a month. Karen then began dating Randy and moved into an apartment with him. Randy continued to show a romantic interest in Michele who told him she was not interested in him and later told Karen about this and advised her to end the relationship. Karen grew angry and stopped speaking to Michele. Karen's anger escalated and when she later saw Michele in a public park threatened her with a broken beer bottle and slapped and pushed her.
On 1st October 1985, Michele told her mother she was seeing friends Laura Doyle, a friend of both girls, picked up Michele from her house. Four hours later Laura called Michele's home and asked to speak with Michele, when Michele's mother told Laura she thought Michele was with her Laura said she had dropped Michele off with three boys. After getting petrol, Laura said, she had returned to where she had dropped Michele off but Michele and the boys were gone.
On 4th October, Michele's body was found face down in a stream in Angeles National Forest. She had been drowned in eight inches of water and her hair had been hacked off. A four-foot log had been placed on top of the body.
Both Laura and Karen attended Michelle's funeral. Laura had sent Michele's family a sympathy card along with $20. Karen regularly visited the place Michele was found and kept pictures of Michele in her bedroom, she even told Michele's mother at one point she had seen Michele's ghost.
What had happened to Michele seemed to be a mystery, police had no leads in the case, no arrests were made and the case went cold.
In July 1988, Eva Chirumbolo, another classmate and friend who had taken the 45-minute drive into the mountains, told police about the murder. Laura and Karen were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The two had taken Michele to the creek and shouted at her, accusing her of having sex with their boyfriends and berating her for messing up relationships. Laura and Karen then held Michele face down in the water, cut off her hair and placed a log on her body.
As the jury could not be convinced that the murder was planned, and therefore first-degree murder, Laura Doyle and Karen Severson were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison each. Karen Severson was released from prison in 2011 and Laura Doyle in 2012.
After leaving prison, Karen Severson began promoting a book she had written about the crime and her prison experience and made a deal to have a film produced. Michele's family sued her for the profits. The state of California passed Missy's Law which requires those who are helping to publish work made by criminals to contact the victims of the family about the works.

The Murder of Kylie Smith
Tumblr media
Kylie Smith was a 15-year-old girl living in Owaka. Kylie was a happy person and a popular student and class captain on the school council, she enjoyed swimming and netball and loved horses. Kylie dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.
Kylie was out horseriding with her friend Angie when the girls noticed a blue Volkswagen Beetle driving past them, the driver waved at them and then did a U-turn and drove past them slowly, Angie recalled seeing the same car parked outside the school the day before. When the girls made their way back into town, they saw the car again it was parked outside the chemist not far from Kylie's home. The next day the driver was outside the chemist leaning on the car's bonnet he called out 'Hi,' and 'nice day,' to Angie when she left the shop, she felt uneasy and said that the man had been checking her out.
Two days later, Angie learnt the man's name- he was Paul Bailey. Paul Bailey had abducted, raped and murdered Kylie. The last known sighting of Kylie had been her riding her horse on 1st November 1991 at 4.35 pm, she had been seen talking to a man in a car. The man, later identified as Bailey, had forced Kylie to get off her horse and lie down in the back of his car before driving away. Minutes after the abduction, the postman saw Kylie's horse and found Angie and another of the girls' friends riding nearby, they had been running later and were trying to catch up with Kylie. The postman handed Kylie's horse to her friends and began searching for Kylie.
Bailey later confessed to the murder saying he had taken his gun out with him and, “just got carried away with the fantasy”. He later stated his intention was always to rape and kill Kylie because she was “Taller than all other girls and she stood out”. Bailey told officers that he had driven Kylie to another location and raped her before driving her to a creek, ordering her to remove her clothes before raping her again and shooting her in the back of the head. He had then returned home to his family who had heard the news a girl had gone missing, Bailey had prayed with them for her safe return. Kylie's body was found at 5 pm the day after she went missing.
Disturbing details about Bailey were revealed- he had an obsession with young schoolgirls and had previously groomed young girls. A 12-year-old girl had testified Bailey had given her alcohol and violently raped her while insisting she wore her school uniform. His baby daughter, Linda, had died from severe burns after her bassinet had caught fire, it was officially ruled an accident but some claimed Bailey had intentionally killed the infant.
Bailey pleaded guilty to raping and murdering Kylie. He was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole of 10 years for the murder and 13 for the rape. His most recent hearing was in 2021; he was told he would not be released for at least another two years.

The Murder of Leigh Leigh
Tumblr media
Leigh Rennea Mears, later known as Leigh Leigh when she took her stepfather's last name, was a 14-year-old girl living in Australia. She enjoyed going to the cinema and roller-skating and hoped to become a veterinarian when she grew up. On 3rd November 1989, high school student Jason Robertson threw a party to celebrate his 16th birthday. Most of the students were Newcastle High School students like Leigh and Jason, there were only two adults at the party, Matthew Webster and Guy Wilson who acted as bouncers. About 60 people attended the party, many drank alcohol and smoked marijuana. Leigh had been invited to the party, her mother had allowed her to go until 11 pm, she was very excited as it was the first party she had attended. According to police reports, Leigh was one of several underage girls invited to the party, with the intention being to get them drunk and sexually assault them. 19-year-old Webster approached another person at the party and said 'Hey dude, we're going to get Leigh pissed and all go through her.' Leigh was given a bottle of whiskey and was reported to have been very intoxicated very quickly. A 15-year-old boy, referred to only as NC1 due to his age, was heard saying 'I'm going to go and fuck Leigh,' shortly afterwards NC1 was seen taking Leigh to the beach. Witnesses testified Leigh was so drunk he had to carry her there. When Leigh returned from the beach, she was crying and bleeding between her legs, other guests tried to console her and find out what happened and she told them she had been raped and that she 'hated' NC1. After hearing Leigh's complaints, Webster was heard referring to Leigh in a derogatory way and suggesting they all 'have a go,' he then approached Leigh, put his arm around her and asked her for sex. Leigh refused and Wilson pushed Leigh to the ground, Webster and around ten other boys joined Wilson, they surrounded Leigh, shouted at her, kicked her, poured beer on her and spat on her. Several people witnessed the assault yet no one helped Leigh or attempted to call for help. Leigh stood up when the boys stopped and staggered away, throwing a bottle at them, Wilson threw a bottle back at her as she left. The boys then followed Leigh around the party continuing to insult and assault her. Leigh was seen leaving and walking towards the beach at around 10.30 pm. Leigh's stepfather arrived to pick Leigh up at 10.50 pm but could not find her, they assumed she had gone to a friend's house for the night and waited for her at home. The next morning, Leigh's body was found in the sand dunes, 300 feet away from the party. Leigh was naked except for her shoes and socks, her underwear and shorts were around her ankle and she lay on her back with her legs apart. Her bra, sweater and shirt had been discarded nearby and were inside out and stained with alcohol. A 5.3kg bloodstained rock was found next to her. Leigh had died from a fractured skull which had caused a brain injury, she had been struck with force several times. Leigh suffered multiple, brutal injuries including to her jaw, ribs, liver and kidney, she had also been choked before she had died. She had also been violently sexually assaulted with deep and extensive bruising, lacerations and tears, it was likely she had been raped with a foreign object, possibly a beer bottle. Police began the long task of interviewing the teenagers at the party. NC1 admitted having sex with Leigh but claimed it had been consensual. Wilson initially denied doing anything but later admitted to pushing Leigh, pouring beer on her, spitting on her and throwing a beer bottle at her. Webster admitted pouring beer on Leigh and claimed he had gone for a walk after the party but denied sexually assaulting or killing Leigh. On 16th November, Webster pleaded guilty to assaulting Leigh and was released on bail. On 19th January, Wilson pleaded guilty to assaulting Leigh and was also released on bail. On 31st January, Leigh's stepfather punched Willson three times because Wilson told Leigh's stepfather he would 'get' Leigh's younger sister next, her stepfather was charged and pleaded guilty for assault. While on bail Webster admitted to murdering Leigh stating he lost his temper when Leigh rejected him, he claimed he had choked Leigh and then killed her with a rock because he "thought she would squeal on [him] for trying to rape her." NC1 was sentenced for having sex with someone under the age of consent, he was given just six months custody in a detention centre, he was never charged with rape. The sentence was later reduced to 100 hours of community service. NC1 also admitted having sex with another underage girl at the party and was never charged. Wilson was sentenced to 6 months in prison for assaulting Leigh. Webster pleaded guilty to Leigh's murder and was sentenced to 14 years in prison, 6 of which he could not apply for parole. Five citizens were able to give favourable character descriptions at his sentencing which influenced the short sentence. There was public outrage at the shortness of the sentences as well as the fact Leigh had experienced a high level of sustained sexual violence with forensic genital injuries yet there were no rape charges. Only charging NC1 with consensual sex with an underage partner when she had been unable to consent and subject to a violent rape prompted complaints of victim-blaming. Webster was released on parole on 10th June 2005. His parole was revoked in November 2004 for assault, he pleaded self-defence and was released again in May 2005 after the charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence. The investigation was heavily criticised; many speculated Webster had not acted alone and there were indications Leigh had suffered blows from multiple directions suggesting more than one perpetrator. Wilson had no alibi at the time of her death.

The Unsolved Murder of Rita Curran
Tumblr media
Rita Curran was is a 24-year-old woman, she taught second grade in primary school and lived with her roommates in Vermont. Rita's friends described her as 'quiet, sweet, and almost painfully shy.'
Rita was last seen alive on Monday 19th of July 1971 at around 11:20 pm when she returned home from a rehearsal and was getting ready for bed. Around 1 am Rita's roommate, Beverly, returned from a date and found Rita's nude and bloody body laying just inside their shared bedroom. Rita's hair was still in curlers as if she'd been attacked while she was getting ready for bed. It is estimated that she was killed at around midnight. A post-mortem examination determined Rita had been beaten her on the head face and had died from manual strangulation, she had also been sexually assaulted. Neighbours did not hear any screams or disturbances and Rita's purse containing that $20 was untouched ruling out burglary gone wrong. There was no sign of forced entry although the girls generally left their apartment unlocked. Bloodstains indicated that the killer left through the kitchen and out of the back door.
Rita had reportedly been receiving mysterious phone calls late at night with heavy breathing and silence, she had spoken about her concerns over these phone calls to her friends. Following the murder, reports of threatening phone calls to single young women increased heavily. Several woman also came forward with reports of a peeping tom seen around the University. A home invasion where a 20-year-old woman was woken up at 4 am and raped had occurred only a week earlier. The perpetrator of these calls and attacks was never caught. With the lack of evidence or leads the case went cold.
It was later suspected that Ted Bundy may have an involved in Rita's murder. The cause of death was similar to that of his other victims. However, there are no records of Bundy travelling to the area in 1971 when he was known to be in Seattle. Before his execution in 1989, Bundy specifically denied committing any murders in Vermont. Bundy was also known to stalk his victims before attacking them and therefore usually murdered in areas he was living in at the time.
Rita Curran's murder remains unsolved.
