Not Hispanic or anything even remotely similar, but Primos just makes me sad after I heard about all the inconsistencies. Because if there was proper grammar and spelling and not kids named Nacho, Fat (but she's skinny,) and Pussy, as well as the town name. Yikes.
Just lamenting because the creator, who is definitely Latina, said that she wants to make a show for ppl who don't belong. And I think it's wonderful, but she just did it wrong and guilt trips ppl instead of apologizing for her mistakes and fixing them. I think it could be a decent show if all those mistakes were fixed! Sure, the Hispanic family of like 20 ppl living in the same house is overdone imo, but idk! It's not too late to fix it.
But of course, Disney doesn't care enough. No one working on this show cares enough! The whole thing about people who don't fit in or have no representation is just platitudes at this point.
Or maybe they do. They did delete the preview, after all. Maybe they're workshopping it! But what do you think?
I just find it odd that a show made by Latinos for Latinos came out this bad!
(Latino is gender-neutral, right?)
Y'all deserve better!
Sincerely, a Very Very White Girl who Speaks no Spanish
yeah, I agree it would be an okay show if the staff would handled the situation in the right way. actually, latinos (mostly mexicans, as op) love see our ethnicities represented! Thats why series as Mucha Lucha, El tigre or movies as Nacho Libre and Los campeones de la lucha libre are really beloved media for us (specially for the ones who grew in the 2000s as op)
In my personal opinion, Primos seemed to be something like Big City Greens but aimed to the 2nd generation hispanic (going to use the word "pochos", as we call them) and what it was filter it seemed somewhat charming. But again, the staff didnt know how to handle the situation and made everything wrong

Why is it that any time theres some post criticizing something which is culturally insensitive towards Latines theres always some bitch in the notes pulling some "This is why I don't think youre latine if you weren't born or raised in latin America" shit, like do you honestly fucking think offensive and harmful things like that don't also impact Latines in the US???? LIKE just because somebody is being afflicted with some insanely bad internalized issues it doesn't mean every fucking Latine outside Latin America either approves of that kind of shit or is that person. CHOOOOKKKEEE!!!!!

I still cannot believe that a new show on Disney Chanel has a character with a name that translates to “pussy” in some Latin American countries. Did nobody think to give the kid’s name a Google test?

Regarding “¡Oye! ¡Primos!”
As a Mexican, yes, my first gripe with the show was the terrible title used. And in second place, the horrible, horrible artstyle.
The main idea of a group of cousins in the house? Yes, it’s relatable, you can have things like that happen with some sides of the family, so that one was a good choice.
“Terremoto” being the name of the town was... a very weird choice. It’s not really racist as much as eyebrow-rising, since it takes place in Los Angeles, but still...
And the names of the characters, despite some of them being dumb, they aren’t really inaccurate. “Cuquita” can be used to call a cockroach, yes, but it’s also an existing nickname. “Gordita” is again, accurate, if questionable to use. Maybe the joke is that the girl is actually slim? Or it has to do with the food named Gordita?
Also “Nacho” and “Nachito”. Real way to call someone named “Ignacio”. Having two characters with the same name seems creatively dumb, but maybe there’s an in-universe reason?
Really, if Disney would have kept their mouths shut and didn’t respond to criticism with idiocy like “Well, language is fluid!” or “This is attacking diaspora!” then the vitriol wouldn’t be so high. At most, it seemed very “meh”. I would give it the benefit of the doubt.
Would. Until I saw things like this shit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, the moment you use the word “Latinx”, you immediately made yourself an enemy out of the vast majority of the latin american community.
Including me.

A la mierda con esto. Voy a ver Mucha Lucha.

Disney's "Primos" is so annoyingly insulting and racist for goodness sake. Although I am peruvian it's so obvious to any hispanic person that it's stupid.
The baby's name Cuquita means either "cockroach" or "small pussy" depending on the country
The town is literally called earthquake. What the fuck.
Oye primos sounds like "hey counsins" was translated by google but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. If there was a single person on the crew who had minimal understanding of spanish that grammar shit wouldn't have come so fucking far in production.
And of course let's not forget about the adorable stereotypes and the dumb yellow filter that is supposed to represent Mexico.
Just wanted to tell this to an english audience, we hate that crap and it's by no means a good representation. It's nacho taco chimiganga but unironical.
Also side note representation like Luz is heavily appreciated since 90% of latam representation is Mexico. I would be thrilled to see a peruvian protagonist in the future

idk the same Latinos who now cry over Primos, said very racists remarks over Halle Bailey
As a Mexican, it’s very hypocritical of them to cry over a badly conjugated verb and some of the kids having very traditional names
Like I want to say nobody in Mexico is nicknamed Cuquita, but go to any town and you’ll find an old lady with the same nickname
And I want to say “oh nobody spends the summer with so many cousins”, and then I remember my own family reunion from 2005 with all my extended family only on my grandmother’s side… and… yeah, spent the summer vacation with a ton of cousins, easily 20 kids my age at the time
I wanna say it doesn’t happen… but, no, yeah, it does
And as for the “oye, primos” vs “oigan, primos” debate, a bunch of Latinos licked Pixar’s boots with Coco, when the song “Poco Loco” also has grammar mistakes. The song is clearly talking about a woman, so it should switch to “you are in poco loca” but it doesn’t
And Primos is not the first, nor the last, cartoon with Spanish-speaking characters that make grammar mistakes or pronounce words with a very thick American accent. Like, Dora’s Spanish is AWFUL. It’s terrible. No wonder no one learned Spanish from that show.
Do I like Primos? I honestly don’t care for it because I dislike the animation style, and the plot doesn’t seem that interesting to me. Is it the most racist thing I’ve seen? Nah.
As for the earthquake joke, we Mexicans joke about the earthquakes all the damn time. The only reason people are mad is cause they don’t perceive the creator as Mexican, so she shouldn’t joke about it, even if she’s form Mexican descent, it’s difficult for a Mexican from Mexico to consider them truly Mexican unless they’ve lived in Mexico. It’s a sad truth.
Also lots of kids from immigrant families don’t learn their family’s native language or they don’t learn it formally, so they don’t know the rules. Also, lots of Spanish-speaking people break grammar rules all the time, and don’t know how to spell words either.
It’s just so funny how a cartoon which just seems okayish at best has created so much controversy lmao

Hell I cant believe Im gonna say this but twitter is finally making me laugh ...and thats thanks to Oye Primos
1- The title is badly written
2- The protagonist´s nick name is ¨Cuquita¨ wich literally means ¨little pussy¨ in my country
3- The fucking sky is yellow ala Mexico in Braking Bad
4- None of the characters wear shoes, like wtf are we too poor for shoes or what? lol
5- The ¨whole family lives in the same house¨ stereotype/cliche
6- Most of the latinoamerican countries have been devastated by earthquakes throughout history and the writers have the audacity to call the show´s town ¨Terremoto Highs¨ = "Earthquake Highs¨
There is nothing wrong with Americans creating shows based on other cultures... but for the love of god, investigate about that culture first!!

the Primos shitshow disney channel has pulled is legit fascinating to me. i'm so obsessed. how the hell did any of this happen without someone in the staff going "hey hold on isn't this all wrong. isn't this all fucked up and wrong?".
terremoto high. the mexican yellow sky filter. a kid named nacho and another named cuquita. the blatant grammatical mistake in the only spanish phrase that's spoken. and it's just the intro. it's just the fucking intro. it's only the god damn intro and they have managed to piss every latine i've known and seen on twitter to the point where they straight up had to delete the intro from twitter.
