just occurred to me but now i'm having feelings abt how ala mhigo got told “no charity, you’ve got to trade if you want shit” by ul’dah post-sb, while garlemald gets given a trade agreement as a concession to their egos after receiving a ton of charity.
especially with the in-game context that most ala mhigans have been refugees in eorzea for the 20 years of the occupation, that gaius was canonically enslaving ala mhigans to send off to the mines (mentioned in both 1.0 and 2.0), and that the people we’re seeing on-screen were wealthy enough to live in the imperial capital and would’ve benefitted from the proximity to the imperial family (see: forum solius).
like. idk, the msq is just trying to make you forget how every single garlean we see on-screen benefited from the empire and its crimes, even if they weren’t actively complicit.
stormblood was pretty good when it came to how it portrayed colonialism, but it feels like the msq writers have retreated from that because they want us to be sympathetic to garlemald. it feels like an extension of how gaius was morally whitewashed in shadowbringers despite never actually opposing what garlemald did, only that an ascian was using him for his own purposes.
i think it’s a shame we’ve never been able to ask gaius point blank if he would do what he did again if it wasn’t an ascian asking him to do it. both in terms of story potential and just sheer... why wouldn’t we?

The scene w the twins held hostage in Tertium is probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire game (which says a LOT). It's a very good portrayal of their characters and their dynamic to each other.
The scene starts with Alisaie trying to kick the door open, despite knowing she's better off staying put until we get them out. Point 1: Alisaie is reactive. Alphinaud then responds to this by explaining that, while he also hates this situation, they're better off staying put like we told them to. Point 2: Alphinaud internalizes.
Alisaie walks to sit by the wall like he is, and then kinda shyly scoots closer to him after realizing she's sitting too far away and he's not moving any closer, and puts her head on his shoulder. Point 3: Alisaie displays affection more freely (if a bit embarassed by it sometimes lol) while Alphinaud is a bit more reserved with it, typically waiting for others to initiate.
Alisaie starts to vent about her frustration regarding both the current situation in Garlemald and with Fourchenault(and the Forum as a whole), while also understanding where it all comes from. Alphinaud responds by looking at the people in questions views and feelings on the circumstances, while still agreeing that yeah, it sucks. Point 4: Alisaie is openly emotional (frustration being her typical form of expression) and tends to personally involve herself with most things, while Alphinaud takes things from a more distanced and factual point of view (while still expressing his own thoughts in a polite and professional manner).
After this they start to discuss the focal points of their respective characrer developments. Alisaie remarks that one's will and wants should be their own and not an extention of anothers, in the same way her character arc revolves around her finding her own reason for wanting to help the people of Eorzea, which she later admits that she has found. Alphinaud talks about how Varis' ideal of a single, united nation bereft of dividing factors was similar to his own ideals in the beginning, which he now admits is pure ignorance and will solve nothing but doom everyone to misery.
They make affirmations of their shared conviction and such, but the part that really hits this whole things home, is Alisaie asserting that she will stand by Alphinaud as he takes the lead. Because she has her role as an activist, she is the one who acts on what needs to be done and does it, whereas Alphinaud's role is as a leader and politician, to make it so that what needs to be done can be done. Alphinaud is a bit unsure if he can do it, because he's already failed so many times, but he won't give up and neither will Alisaie let him. She states as much with her typical dose of gently scolding love sprinkled in there.
The scene packs in so many details of them in such a nice way. Alisaie is outwardly emotional, typically unleashing her feelings in the moment and then calms down afterwards, while Alphinaud internalizes everything, holding on to his feelings for a long time and let them simmer down to a more managable level. When Alphinaud expresses his feelings more clearly, Alisaie is typically the more collected one(this is shown a lot in stb, like when we first meet Hacock and Alphinaud is instantly defensive, while Alisaie is the one to suggest at least hearing him out) and vice versa.

New Game+ Tutorial
"I don't remember this part of the story." "It's been so long since I played X expansion." "What happened during that raid again?" "Who was this character?" "I story skipped the MSQ/job quests so I don't know what happened and who these people are!"
There's answers to this, friends. Not only is the game's own Unending Journey (in inn rooms, or as furnishing in your FC or private rooms/homes) able to replay many cutscenes, and there's the completed quest log, but there are places online, such as Garland Tools and the FFXIV Game Script, that keep most (not all) of the quest text handy.
But if you want to relive those quests, and/or get the side dialogues and replay (or first time play!) the experiences, as of Shadowbringers 5.1 there's a feature called New Game+ to allow that.
New Game+ (or NG+) will let you replay past questlines, at your current level (which makes it go pretty fast in a lot of cases). There is No experience or rewards to gain through this feature--no using it to level alt jobs. It purely exists to allow experiencing, or re-experiencing, completed content.
Once defeating the Ultima Weapon and Lahabrea at level 50 in ARR's finale of 2.0, you can go to Vesper Bay and find the Wistful Whitebeard.
More info and images below the Keep Reading cut...
(image taken from gamesconsolewiki and their article on this feature.)
Once you've unlocked the feature by talking to him, you get a new menu option in your Duty menu (the exclamation point icon), right between Duty Recorder and Hall of the Novice.
Once you select the feature it brings up a menu of options; it usually defaults to Main Story Quests, but I also have a paused replay under "Suspend" in progress. There are also options that match other quest interfaces, like your Journal or the Unending Journey; Chronicles of a New Era for raids and trials, Side Story for quests like Hildibrand, the Scholasticate, Role Master Quests, Void Quests, and Chronicles of Light (story important side quests, like Tales of the Dragonsong War, Tales from the Shadows, Tales of Newfound Adventure). Tank, Healer, DPS, Crafting, and Gathering quests also have their own categories.
Each Expansion MSQ is broken into parts; usually 2 parts for the x.0 main expansion, and then 2 parts for the patches. They're only available after x.0 or the patch stories are complete.
Also notice the "Help" icon in the top right of the NG+ overlay; it opens a pretty comprehensive guide, divided into menu sections, about how the feature works.
ARR is split into 6 parts, and I do think 2.0 could use a rework in how they're split but for now, I'm selecting Part 6 to look for specific side dialogues that only exist in this timeframe.
Selecting Part 6 opens the description; the Crystal Braves have just been formed, to help the Scions with the turmoil still facing the realm--from refugees, to Garlemald's continuing threat, to primals and Ascians.
Once you do, the NG+ quest info shows up, usually around where ever you keep your MSQ quest marker. I hide my MSQ tracker once it's done, so NG+ fits in that same spot in the upper left for me.
It tells me to "Relive Past Adventures!", which expac and part I'm in, and which quest is my starting point in this case, "Traitor in the Midst", the start of the Ivy spy plotline in Patch 2.4.
From here it progresses as if I am back in that patch and on those quests, but without any experience or rewards. Aeryn's in her current level 90 appearance and skills, making it easy to skip past and handle level 45-50 enemies in these zones.
So long as I am in NG+, I cannot do current quests, plots, or other content; I can't complete new current level duties (duties new in NG+ itself are fine), I can't access the MB, my retainers, or the Unending Journey. I can manually Suspend my current playthrough, or performing some of these actions (like duties) will automatically suspend my NG+ playthrough. You also cannot start NG+ while doing certain things (like some quests, such as leves).
This also will not let you play through the start of other city-states, only your original starter town. Solo duties will let you choose their difficulty immediately, without having to fail them first like in normal play.
If I want to drop my NG+ save before I've finished the replay--maybe I found the info and screenshots I wanted--I can delete the save.
This is an extremely helpful feature that can be used to replay events and quests, either for the fun of it, or because you want to find specific dialogue or lore information that only exists in a specific point in game. Maybe you want to visit old friends lost along the way, or take new screenshots of your WoL as they are post-fantasia.
Maybe it's just been a few years, and you've found you've forgotten some things and want to remember how the story actually went, especially knowing what you know now.

I mean to be fair, imagine being a humble shepherd's son. Tending to the flock and going about your normal life when the Dravanian Horde descend upon your village. Rending it naught but ash and killing your entire family. You then are driven by the feeling of hatred and vengeance. You let it lead you to becoming a knight and fighting to defend Ishgard. The Holy See recognizing your talents and your vigor for the cause to send you to train with the old Azure Dragoon who teaches you readily but cautions you against your hate. But you are growing restless and wish to exact that vengeance. You steal away one of Nidhogg's eyes and are hunted by an Adventurer also destined to be the Azure Dragoon and Nidhogg's Bane. You grapple with this feeling as the eye over takes you but the Adventurer stops the corruption in its tracks. Knowing how well you have to guard yourself you prefect the art of mentally and emotionally closing yourself off. You appear in the lead up to a conflict with another Horde invasion at the behest of an old companion who has risen to the station of Lord Commander of the Knights.
You aid in beating back Nidhogg's finest and give chase shortly thereafter. But after finding no path forward and knowing not where the Aery is. You return to Ishgard and over hear a young, naive little lord speaking on making peace with the dragons. You shrug it off as folly but with his adventurer friend seems to of encounters the heretics hideaway. With no other lead you follow them on their peace mission. Slay heretics and meet with their leader Lady Iceheart. You bicker and your eyes begin to open to possibility that the Holy See is also at fault for your village's demise. You learn more and more until you discover the root of it all. You fight the consort of Nidhogg and then the beast itself. Paining your armor red with his corruptive aetheric essence. And then it is over...your long siege now finished. But the job of the Azure Dragoon is never done. You submit to a life forever in service to the Holy See. For those who caused the Dragonsong War are now all dead and gone.
Until the current Heavens' Ward and Archbishop make their intent known. An eternal Dragonsong War with Thordan as its god and propigator. Eternity of tragedies set to unravel and the death of Lord Haurchefant. You join the Warrior of Light in their own quest for vengeance. You see the sacrifice of Icehearts' sacrifice for the future of Dragon and Ishgard peace. You aid in breaking the barrier to Azys Lla and you aid in fending off the Garlean forces. Knowing, just as with Nidhogg, the Warrior's vengeance of the Heavens' Ward is their mission alone. You return to meet with them afterwards, a kinship in vengeance fulfilled. But at the slightest relief that the fight is finally over Nidhogg's essence takes over you. Twists you, corrupts vengeance and years of hatred with its own. Ruining any chance at peace between Broods willing and turns your lance against Ishgard. Which you had never wished.
But the fool Little Lord and the Warrior of Light fight off the shade. And with the eyes removed. You can finally place the mantle away and take up a better cause. To make the future worlds be not fooled by holy surmon and vengeful malice. You armor yourself with Ysayle's namesake and go forth freeing dragonkin and man alike from their missions of wanton carnage. Until you hear word of the Eyes of Nidhogg causing a Storm of Blood in Ala Mhigo. You disable a cannon to enable Resistant forces to cut a path between you and your objective. Once again your allies lay low Garlemald and false Gods. And with a strike of your lance, the eyes of Nidhogg and the spectre of vengeance is vanquished.
You leave to bring Hraesvelgr and Nidhogg's remaining broods back together in harmony. Becoming fond of the dried squid of Kugane. Only to hear Ishgard is at war with Garlemald. You make a mad sprint onto the battleground and find the Warrior about to be struck down by a demon possessed corpse of the crowned Prince. Spiriting them away in a nick of time and quickly leaving as to avoid Aymeric's pestering. But that doesn't save you for long, because Tataru and Krile arrive in Kugane and harass you into taking up the Scions' cause as the Warrior and their companions are in another world. You meet the fabled Black Wolf, Gaius van Baelsar. Who is on his own path of redemption by slaying the Ascians who fed him the right words to become so foolhardy and reckless to go forth in conquest of Eorzea. Not content with such words as he has many a crime to pay for but time is short and the Scions are still gone. So strange bedfellows make better allies than the enemies that close in around Ishgard. You both make for the capital and find the Emperor slain, Zenos empowered and the both of you framed for the Emperor's murder. You break out and return to the Scions to deliver the news where Krile and the returned Warrior of Light. Disliking the Echo as it whispers in their ears and envisions them as Nidhogg did yourself you make your excuses and take leave.
And after ALL OF THAT you now find yourself passing through Ishgard to investigate and question Tiamat about her corrupted brood being used against Eorzea once more. You stand being yelled at so loudly by a person you thought was the Little Lord but isn't. While a miqo'te is singing your praises and acting like you're a living legend. You have no idea what is happening, who these people are or why you are worthy of such praises. But oh god here you are anyway and thank the Fury, here comes the Warrior of Light. HELP! PLEASE!
