giving them kisses while they’re busy ::

kujou sara was practicing her aim with her bow when you decided to show her some love. she could be stubborn about public displays of your affection at times, but you knew she didn’t mind small kisses throughout the day. you watched on as she hit the target perfectly, waiting for her to retrieve more arrows before you made your move. with her back turned to you, you rushed in as silently as you could and managed to kiss the tip of her nose before she swatted you away. it didn’t hurt, you knew she was simply surprised. that didn’t stop sara from lightly glaring at you due to the other people nearby. you simply gave her another kiss, this time longer, before making your swift departure. if her aim got a little worse after that, just know she was mentally cursing you and your kisses.

being the inazuman archon, ei was very familiar with stress. hence, she began daily meditation to help soothe the qualms of life. she usually didn’t want to be disturbed but for you, she made an exception. under the guise of delivering her some water, you snuck into ei’s small meditation room. tiptoeing in, you placed the water next to her and quickly landed a peck on her forehead before hurrying out the room. she may be your partner but you knew the strength she carried. you doubted she’d use it on you, especially because of a quick kiss, but you were always careful.

jean was busy with the regular paperwork that being the acting grandmaster brings. when you opened the door to her office, she didn’t even look up - the paperwork was absorbing but you doubted it was enjoyable. you approached the side of her desk, and when jean tilted her head slightly in your direction, you placed a sweet kiss to her cheek. she sighed softly, a light blush decorating her face. she seemed to perk up from your affection, so with that you left with a smile. you’d have to tell lisa to bring her some calming tea later; you knew how much the librarian loved her tea.

ningguang was wise with her time, and knew when a break from work was needed. she didn’t spend this time lounging around, instead inviting one of her secretaries to a game of chess. that’s where you found her, relaxing in her seat while her opponent stressed about her next move. you came up behind her, taking her free hand while the other moved a chess piece. gently lifting her hand, you placed a devout kiss to the back of it, your eyes flicking up to meet hers as she got a checkmate. her secretary had witnessed the act of intimacy, embarrassed more by that than losing the game. after stammering out an apology, she hurriedly left and returned to her duties. you moved to the other side of the table as ningguang reset the board, falling quickly into an affectionate competition only chess could bring.

furina no longer had the responsibilities of an archon. instead, she was hard at work in the kitchen making her classic Pour la Justice cake. she was intently focused on the harder details of the crown. when you snuck up behind her, wrapping your arms around her waist and pressing a kiss to the nape of her neck, you weren’t surprised by the tiny squeak she let out. you moved back slightly, giving her space to breath. furina’s face was bright red as she stuttered out that “y-you shouldn’t do that! i almost ruined the cake…” she pouted when you laughed her concerns off, knowing that she loves the small bits of attention you gave her throughout the day. going to the living room, you hoped she’d still let you have some cake.

as captain of the crux, beidou lead a busy life. ‘there’s always something to busy yourself with’ was what she told her crew, and it was a saying she lived by herself. you managed to catch her while she was chowing down on some of xiangling’s cooking. you could tell she was hungry: when the hunger hit, she could be quite the messy eater. she was clearly busy eating her fill, but that didn’t stop you from showing her some love. there was no need to sneak around, beidou welcomed any friend to eat with her so you knew she’d not complain. besides, you’d both been busy the whole day so she’d more than likely be happy to see you. you waltzed into the room, heading straight towards your captain. she beamed once she saw you, pulling out the chair next to her. you took a seat, and then her jaw between your fingers. before beidou could ask what you were doing, you leaned in and kissed the side of her mouth. there was a few crumbs of food there, prompting you to say, “hm. spicy.”

asta could be quite the busy lady. standing at her regular spot on the space station, she was busy with some of the usual affairs. nothing she couldn’t handle, but after some hours, anyone could understand the need for a break. that’s where you came in. carrying some water and asta’s favourite snack, you made your way through the crowd of researchers. you tried calling her, your voice being unheard due to the hubbub from the people nearby. so you chose to try something else to get her attention. your hands were full so you had to lean in, but you managed to kiss her exposed shoulder blade, thanking her shirt for its open back. she spun with a startled “oh!” before offering you a sweet smile when you handed her the treats. “thank you, my star! these ipc agents have been annoying me with their emails all day…”

bronya found her already busy life become even more hectic when she became supreme guardian. your already limited time spend with her was cut down to even less, sometimes not seeing her for full days. taking matters into your own hands, you proceeded towards her office, a route you’d made yourself acquainted with. you knew she was busy, but after asking one of the secretaries, you learned that she wasn’t in a meeting. perfect. politely knocking, you entered her office once granted permission. though stressed, you could see bronya was glad to have your presence with her. you calmly stepped through the room, your footsteps echoing on the tile. when you stood by her side, bronya let out a breath you couldn’t tell she’d been holding. her head fell against your torso in a moment of weakness, one that you were grateful to witness. there was always pressure from the citizens and her coworkers, more so now than ever. your hand moved to her head, stroking her hair in a comforting rhythm. leaning down, your lips met the crown of her head in a lingering kiss. you wouldn’t leave for a few more minutes, bringing some peace to the chaos that was her job. when you had to leave, she breathed out a “thank you…” and held your hand for a moment before you slipped away, hoping to see her again soon.

life aboard the express was never predictable. for himeko, there was only so much she could take before she needed a well earned break. this involved sitting in her room, the aroma of coffee thick in the air as she read the newspaper. beside her was, of course, her favourite brew. after retreating to her room for some rest, she messaged you to let you know where she was. with the knowledge that himeko was busy relaxing, you felt the need to spoil her with kisses. so that’s just what you did. approaching her room, you were hit with the familiar scent of her. it was almost overwhelming, but you were aware of himeko’s coffee making and drinking habits, most of which happened within her room. her door was left unlocked, she was more than likely expecting your company. when you entered, she peered over at you, an eyebrow raised as she sipped her coffee. moving the cup, she gave you a small, felicitous smile, one that you couldn’t help but return. you moved to sit beside her. no words were spoken when you reached for the mug, gently taking it from her hold. once back on its coaster, you held himeko’s wrist with a tender care. lifting it to your face, you pressed a kiss to the pulse point on her wrist. one, then another, then another. she gave a half-suppressed laugh, used to your way of loving by now. just be prepared for if she decides to give you the same treatment, you’ll be left smelling like coffee all day.

you often found kafka in her office reading elio’s script. it was something she tended to do a lot, with the speakers echoing her favourite classical music to accompany her. while she might not be ‘busy’ per say, everyone knew better than to disturb her unless it was in the script. that being said, you always managed to somewhat surprise her with your affections. sneaking into her office, you crept towards her with a practiced stealth. kafka, sensing your arrival, stopped reading the script in lieu of playing her violin of nothingness. wanting to surprise her, you moved in front of her, thankful that she closed her eyes while miming. your hands moved to her hips and you landed a carefully placed kiss on her jawline. at this, she opened her eyes and placed her hands on your shoulders. she leaned in, pressing her lips to yours. her lipstick left a sticky residue behind, though you couldn’t complain. both it and kafka’s kisses always tasted so sweet. after leaning back, kafka offered you her usual smile, whispering, “feeling brave are we, my little osud?”

natasha was a busy woman. as one of the only underground doctors and the leader of wildfire, she always had work on her plate. you found her in the clinic, her second home. she was busy applying bandages to little hook’s knee- the poor girl had tripped while she was playing with her friends, leaving quite the injury. hook was a brave kid; there may have been tears in her eyes but she didn’t let them fall. you made your way over to the pair of them, wincing when you saw hook’s knee. you knelt down next to natasha, moving her hair to press a kiss to her temple. she gently huffed, muttering a “not now, dear,” as she returned to patching up the girl’s knee. hook on the other hand, had a look of feigned disgust on her face. “eeew! gross!” you chuckled at her antics, and turned to leave the two of them, though not without saying goodbye.

yukong getting a break was rare, she found herself to be working and busy most of the time. it wasn’t an issue, but it did put a slight strain on your relationship. regardless of how busy she was, you wanted to visit her with some kisses as gifts. the guards greeted you as you entered the palace of astrum, and you wasted no time in going straight towards the helm master herself. the holograms flickered as you passed them, the soft blue glow of imagined flora making for quite the pretty sight. yukong was sitting up top, head in hands after a long day. when you got closer to her, she raised her head in alarm but quickly calmed once she saw it was you. you could see the faint memory of tears on her cheeks; this day must have been hard for her. you reached out, your hand holding her cheek while your thumb wiped any remaining tears. without a word, you leaned in a pressed small kisses to her eyelids. such an act of intimacy made her shed a few more silent tears, of which you kissed away this time. after a few moments, she let out a stuttered breath. you could only think of one thing to say then, “come on, let’s go home.”

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine - ★★★★★ - I loved this book and everything about it and it is sitting in my chest with its prose.

Only Ashes Remain by Rebecca Schaeffer - ★★★★ - I hardly remember what happened in the first book but this was a fun time and enjoyed the complicated choices Nita had to make.

Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki - ★★★ - The story was very heartfelt and came together nice but all the video game musician inaccuracies really got to me >_<.

When Sorrows Come by Seanan McGuire - ★★★★ - October Daye! It was nice and fun and I am The Fear for the next book.

Yolk by Mary H. K. Choi - ★★ - I do not think this book was for me lol

Mamo by Sas Milledge - ★★★ - Nothing really captured me about it but I did like how the main character was able to like remaining in their home town without judgement.

Squire by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh - ★★★ - Fun, but nothing captured me really, probably better for a younger audience?

Monstress Volume 7: Devourer - ★★★★★ - I was yelling so much at this volume. Also Corvin's bare chest was there and I think something in my brain broke upon seeing it. Also Kippa had a knife and I think she should keep it.

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden - ★★★ - Mostly vibes and the plot didn’t capture me

Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - ★★★★ - I felt much less frantic about reading this than I did when reading Harrow and didn’t have as many “Oh Shit” moments. Cam and Pal ;A;

Sabriel by Garth Nix - ★★★★★ - Very solid fantasy with a prose style I love, I think if I read this when I was younger I would have been obsessed.

Lirael by Garth Nix - ★★★ - This one was really slow and mostly buildup to Abhorsen. I got impatient with the first part…

Abhorsen by Garth Nix - ★★★★ - Fun conclusion! Sitting in feelings!

Witch Hat Atelier Volumes 9 & 10 by Kamome Shirahama - ★★★★★ -

Shows and Films:

New Life Begins (Cdrama)- ★★★★ - I had so much fun watching this and the costumes are gorgeous. Some of the messaging got kinda heavy-handed but it's about the same level as other cdramas this year.

Knives Out - ★★★★ - Fun!

Glass Onion - ★★★★ - Also fun!

Everything Everywhere All At Once - ★★★★★ - Watched this in a theater, sitting between my parents. Sobbed all the way through the last act.

Reset (Cdrama) - ★★★★ - Emotionally very fulfilling and had me on the edge of my seat and yelling in discord. Pacing-wise I think they could have done better with some of the choices.

Koisenu Futari (JDrama) - ★★★★★ - Technically I haven't seen the last episode of this but I don't want it to end.

Video Games:

Immortal Life - ★★★★★ - It's early access and ongoing but I started playing it this year and it's faaaaaaar better than stardew valley was for me. I love all the characters and the story and just running around doing daily tasks. Also the player community is nice.

Swords of Legends Online - rating in limbo just like the game - I love this MMO so much and if the servers are closed instead of releasing 3.0 I will be devastated. Reaper is the perfect class for me!! Melee with a couple ranged options, no button mashing or frantic clicking, the rotation is mostly cooldown management! Also the option to heal even if I do not want healer responsibilities. The quality of life stuff is fantastic! I love autopiloting to destinations and every time I open up FF14 to get some MSQ progress I'm so disappointed by the lack of it.

Sword and Fairy 7: Together Forever - ★★★★ - That title is a fucking lie. At the beginning of the game, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The design of the game felt very much like a tales of game (that is a good thing) and the combat is kind of clunky. But the story was fun and I love all the characters in it!! Also the ending ripped out my heart and I truly wasn't expecting it to go that way.

DioField Chronicle - ★★★ - Okay. Like objectively this game costs too much for the content that it has. Do not pay full price for it. The plot drops threads like hot potatoes and of the entire cast there's only about 4 that I find compelling. The ending had me yelling at the screen and I'm desperate for a sequel (and the free DLC that was announced holy shit give it to me). Play the demo at least for my wonderful wonderful girl Waltaquin Redditch. Also I legit adore the combat system and how they don't give you long exposition.

A Little to the Left - ★★★ - The puzzles were fun overall and mostly interesting, there were some frustrating ones that I didn’t see the point to and a few that I had the right solution for but the level wouldn’t advance so I had to skip. Also there's like. No story.

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion - ★★★★ - Fun! Can be completed in a day. It's like a super-compact 2d zelda game where everyone is vegetables and there's real estate.

— he noticed you’ve been having this sort of negative energy around you , and that your eyes always had this red tint to them but he just assumed it was just allergies or something (once again, he’s a himbo.)

— big himbo man doesn’t understand why you’ve been avoiding him for the past few weeks :( he’s been missing your surprise hugs and your cute smile

— the days you do catch each other’s attention , it’s very short lived and you end up leaving straight away, he just wants to know what he did wrong so things can finally go back to normal !! ;’(

— when he finally managed to catch you he pleaded that you two go out on a date together to bond his charming smile was too hard to resist so you agreed with a simple nod

— though , this plan ultimately backfired. sara was walking around inazuma apparently searching for something to do with military affairs assigned by the raiden shogun , being the social man he is he went up to sara to start a conversation

— obviously , this upset you even more since you were literally on a date so you just decided to leave as to not waste your time

— poor man’s heart dropped when he couldn’t find you i mean you were right there next to him a couple seconds ago ?? where could’ve you gone in such a short time frame ??

— honestly searched for hours on end before he finally saw you sitting underneath a tree , knees bucked up towards your face and the sunshine softly enveloping you

— he sat down next to you , muscly arms pulling you in gently with a loving sweet kiss to the crown of your head yet all that wasn’t enough to put a pause on the burning tears that ran down your face

— hearing your silent weeps sincerely broke his heart and the fact you wouldn’t even look at him like you normally would when you’re upset - he understood it was his most likely his fault but he was more than ready to take responsibility

— he let you calm down , slowly rubbing your back with one hand whilst giving you short kisses on the top of your head for comfort which manages to work as your tears finally start pricking your eyes

— once you finally explained your feelings and thoughts to him , he just wanted to spoil you with his affection because he felt so bad :(( treats you to anything you want ! with extra cuddles, kisses and words of affirmation as a reward <3

— as ayaka’s housekeeper (malewife) and as a loyal friend of course he’d hang and monitor her quite often , but when those “often’s” become “daily” it can get pretty lonely

— the only things you ever really heard over the past weeks was “sorry , i can’t i need to help ayaka” or any other variation of that same sentence and honestly , you were tired

— when passing by the yashiro commission it was hard to not notice the playful and fleeting touches that they gave each other and the giggles that echoed throughout your head like nails on chalkboard

— thoma would never dare to hurt your feelings on purpose , he’s loved you since like forever ! so you had no real doubt that his love for you was true however you just couldn’t handle the envy that brew itself inside you and planted this seed of insecurity

— you refused to go out whilst you were feeling this way , you just had this sense of shame that you’d even let these sort of thoughts pass through your mind even though you’re more than aware that she’s just his friend

— thoma started to feel your absence besides him , i mean he’s noticed it since the beginning but only now it’s dawning over him that you’ve genuinely not been together enough and that your daily dose of kisses hasn’t been given in way too long ! :(

— he’s an extremely observant individual and very talented at identifying certain behavioural patterns especially when it comes to you , so when he saw you curled up in bed with tissues swarming your bedside table he really knew that this detachment from one another has took a toll on you

— climbs into bed with you and slowly but surely wraps his arms around your waist with a light squeeze and a few chaste kisses on your neck

— didn’t waste any time to apologise thoroughly , he confessed and affirmed his love for you as if you were both back at the start of your relationship - he just wanted to make sure you knew he loved and adored you and that nothing or no one could prevent that

— makes sure to dote on you heavily , so if you’re not into heavy PDA then .. good luck ! <3

ARC Review: An Unlasting Home by Mai Al-Nakib

A multigenerational story of women in Kuwait, India, the United States, and more. This started with Sara, a forty-one-year-old professor charged with blasphemy in Kuwait. From here the book goes back and forth in time, constantly changing perspectives, beginning with Sara's grandmother, and Yasmine, who would eventually be her very close friend. Upon reading the premise, this sounded like my kind of story and it was to some extent. I think the author did a job of depicting people's daily lives in a specific period, and the history of the countries the story took place in. The writing was eloquent and very real. Although, I found it overwhelming at first. There were so many characters being introduced, that I could no longer keep track of their relations to each other. Sara's connection to the other women in the story wasn't made clear in the first parts but would be made so eventually, as it was for every character. Before that, I read her chapters in mild confusion. Aside from that, it took so long for things to take off. If you want a book that would have you worried or tense or just at the edge of your seat, I don't think this is it. There was tension in the latter parts but since this was told nonlinearly and there were chapters in the present, you'd come to anticipate things. There was an air of inevitability. And for me, detachment. I finished this book not having felt very close to these characters. I found their personalities to be somewhat similar to each other. This novel was a bit difficult to start and get acquainted with for me, but once things got clearer, I got more familiar with who's who, and things started happening, it became a breeze to get through. I enjoyed learning about the history - of Kuwait, mostly - and cultures I am not very familiar with. This served as an eye-opener and was also strong thematically. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc!
