Rejection.
A word that carried so much weight in matters of the heart. It hit him with a force he never saw coming, leaving him breathless, bewildered, and questioning every decision he had made.
The pain of rejection cut deep, undermining the confidence he once had, and casting shadows over the hopes and dreams he dared to envision.
Rejected.
Rejected from McLaren.
Rejected from a Red Bull seat.
And now, he was rejected once again.
In an instant, his world felt shattered, and he questioned just how worthy he truly was of love and affection.
He poured his heart out, baring his soul in that vulnerable moment when he knelt with one knee. He thought you had shared something meaningful, a connection that was genuine and real.
He thought it would be enough.
Daniel’s car traveled home with one less person inside that night. But even if he was already in his garage, he refused to step out of his car. He stayed so he could sit there in his hurt.
He gripped the steering wheel tightly, a physical manifestation of the emotional turmoil within him.
It was hard, almost impossible, not to take it personally, to wonder what could have gone wrong. Was it something he said? Something he did? Or perhaps it was simply a matter of timing and circumstance, beyond his control.
He ran his hand through his hair, his face reflecting a mixture of frustration and resignation.
He could say that he longed for clarity, a glimpse into your thoughts and reasons, but that would be a lie. Because in all honesty, he kind of saw it coming.
He wasn’t sure what was worse, the fact that you picked Max or the fact that there was a part of him that always knew you would pick Max.
Why did he even try?
Oh, right.
Hope.
Because of hope.
He tried because you showed him hope.
You showed him hope—a glimmer of light that he hadn't seen in ages. Life had become monotonous, blending into an array of muted gray, until you came along. Your entry into his life was like a vibrant burst of color, injecting new life into his weary soul. He dared to hope, to believe that he had found something extraordinary.
It was a peculiar feeling. To be caught between longing and despair, to have his heart both soar and shatter within the same breath. The intoxicating aura of love was both a beacon of hope and a cruel illusion, and he found himself entangled in that painful paradox.
With a final deep breath, he left his car, ready to face his family who were staying in his home just for this special night. He told his family for a reason, he just couldn’t keep it in.
But now he wished he didn’t.
Cheer and applause were what met him when he entered the door. His family had huge smiles plastered on their faces, clearly excited about the news they were expecting.
Until it stopped.
It all stopped when his lips trembled, trying to fake a smile.
It all stopped when they saw the tears on his face.
They didn’t even need to ask what happened. They already knew.
His sister splashed out the bottle of Dom Perignon, but no one was celebrating.
"She would've made such a lovely bride. What a shame she's fucked in the head," his father said. His mom’s ring was still in his pocket, and your picture was still in his wallet. But love…
Love slipped beyond his reaches.
There was nothing to celebrate.

Max was walking you home, still holding the umbrella to protect you from the rain. Neither of you spoke and neither of you really cared. Max knew, from the way your lips shook, eyes cried, and the whimpers that left your mouth, that you did not want to speak at that moment. He respected and understood that.
He was more understanding now than he was before.
You were speechless. Your mouth could not utter a single word, but your mind made up for it by clouding itself with overwhelming thoughts.
You remembered that one night when fate played a part in your first meeting with Daniel.
That night, he asked you to dance and you refused. You refused because you knew he was asking you to dance to a song of love and new beginnings.
But after a single conversation, it was you who asked him if he was still willing to dance.
You always knew that dancing was a dangerous game. But that night, you started it when you offered your hand to Daniel.
The dance continued.
But now, you dropped his dance while dancing. Left him out there, crestfallen on the landing with your champagne problems.
One for the money.
Two for the show.
You never were ready.
So, you let him go.
And you left him alone.
You just didn’t know the answer until he was already on his knees and asked you.
You couldn’t even give him a reason.
His proposal should have brought you joy, excitement, and a feeling of being cherished. But instead, you had found yourself struggling, torn between the present and the ghosts of your past.
The same exact past that was walking beside you right now.
It was not that Daniel wasn't kind or loving, he truly was. He possessed all the qualities one could desire in a partner. But your heart lingered elsewhere.
There was someone before him. Someone who awoken a flame within you, a love so fierce and profound that it felt like it could withstand anything. And then, life happened, and you drifted apart, your paths diverging towards separate horizons.
But even as the seasons changed, and new opportunities came knocking at your door, that love never truly left you. It remained etched in the deepest recesses of your being, an indelible mark upon your soul.
Accepting his proposal would have been a betrayal, not only to him, but to yourself as well. It was a painful decision to make, but you owed it to yourself and to him, to be honest and not settle for anything less than a love that was pure. For one can only truly give their heart to another when they are whole themselves.
His heart was glass and you dropped it.
You didn’t even notice you reached your apartment until Max opened the door for you. He sat you down on your couch, before leaving you for a moment to heat some water and prepare a bath for you.
He went back right after, crouching in front of you so he could see your face. You were looking down, still crying. He placed a finger under your chin, moving it upwards so you could face him. And then he fixed the wet hair that covered your face, wiped your tears, and kissed your forehead.
The heart wants what it wants, and yours was still beating in an unbreakable rhythm alongside the person in front of you—Max.
You suddenly recalled what Daniel told you before, when he told you an advice his father gave him and then he explained it.
“Time matters, yes. But the length is subjective. Love is not supposed to be a competition where time is the sole judge. Sometimes, longer doesn’t mean healthier, and shorter doesn’t make it insincere or artificial.”
He said that love was not supposed to be a competition. And he was not wrong about that.
It wasn’t a competition because it never was a competition in the first place.
You loved Daniel, but you were in love with Max.
It was always Max.
Tumblr media
He poured his heart into that proposal, believing that you were the one. He had envisioned a future together with you, filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. But perhaps fate had different plans in store for him. And though it stung him, he must pick up the pieces and keep moving forward.
His heart ached now. Those promises whispered in the darkest hours, the dreams woven with tender hands, they all shimmered with the possibility of a love that transcended boundaries. He clung to those words, as fragile as glass, praying that they would withstand the test of time.
Yet, here he was, lost in a labyrinth of broken dreams. The reality bit bitterly, gnawing at the frayed edges of his shattered heart. False hope, they called it. A cruel game of chance that you unwittingly roped him into. He knew, deep down, that you didn't do it intentionally. And that knowledge is what steeped his sorrow in a pot of bittersweet brew.
Because despite the pain that seared through his veins, he couldn't summon an ember of anger towards you. Love had a way of blinding people to the faults of those we held dearest. And so, he found himself teetering on the precipice of resentment and forgiveness, unable to fully commit to either.
It was a lonely place to be trapped in, the emotional escape room in his heart that didn't have an escape. The echoes of once-hopeful conversations reverberated through the hollow chambers of his mind, each word etching deeper into his wounded heart.
Though the pain felt overwhelming now, Daniel knew that time would heal his wounds. It may take days, weeks, or even months, but he would pick up the pieces, rebuild his shattered heart, and learn to love again.

NETHERLANDS. AUGUST 25, 2024.
Daniel was running down the paddock, planning to head to the pitlane when a curious photographer stopped him to ask a question.
“Sorry for asking this, but I think I speak for all of us,” the photographer pointed to the fans behind him who were clearly recording this exact moment. They cheered the moment Daniel looked at them and he smiled. “When I say we are all curious about what really is your relationship with Y/N?” the photographer continued.
He chuckled. “Why did you want to know that?”
“Well, she hasn’t been beside you for months and then we just saw her with Max hours ago before you came.”
He could only smile, a genuine one.
“Y/N and I are friends, really close friends like what we’ve always been.”
“Really? Some of us thought you were dating because she was seen a lot with you before,” a fan shouted.
He laughed.
They didn’t need to know.
“What? I can’t have a female friend now?” he joked.
“Now that I’m thinking about it… you never launched anything,” the photographer mentioned.
Right. Even after dating you for months, you didn’t want to be affectionate with him in public. That was another telltale sign he chose to ignore. That was the reason he decided to propose in just under 6 months of being in a relationship with you. It was because he was in a rush, he thought that if you became engaged, you would finally let him tell the world about the two of you.
Now that he thought about it, maybe what he had was just an infatuation. An infatuation so intense that it hurt like the real thing. Maybe for so long, he just wanted to feel something and you came along at the right time. He didn’t even know anymore. And he didn’t want to know. It was all in the past.
“That’s right,” Daniel nodded. “Because we have nothing to launch.”
Just as he said that, you and Max entered his view. You two were holding hands and Max was laughing at something you said.
Daniel smiled.
“Look at them,” he gestured to you and Max, the photographer and the fans looked at who he was pointing to. “Max and her are literally meant for each other.”
“I’ve never seen Max laugh like that before,” the photographer said.
“Well, Y/N is the only one who could make him laugh like that if we’re being honest,” he chuckled again. “They make a great couple, they make each other so happy. And I’m happy for them,” he said.
Love wasn't a dead-end road; it was a winding path, full of twists and turns. Rejection was a part of that journey. For deep within, beyond the realms of rejection, dwelled a longing for love that refused to extinguish. He believed there was someone out there, someone who was meant to be for him, just as you were meant to be with Max.
There was one more thing Daniel always believed in other than taking chances.
It was that everything happens for a reason.
You and Max caught his eyes. Max nodded at him, he nodded back.
If he could turn back time, he wouldn't change a thing.
He may not have found the love of his life, but he did find another best friend.
He smiled at both of you, and you returned his smile.
You both knew Daniel would find the real thing instead.
She would patch up the tapestry that you shred.
And he wouldn’t even remember all your champagne problems.

Daniel woke up with his limbs tangled with hers, her hair all over her pillow and the sheets going up and down to the compass of her calm steady breaths. Her face was free of that frown that adorned it for the last couple of days. The exams period was getting close and she was lowkey freaking out more day by day. He stayed there in the bed next to her, admiring her, for a few more moments. Enjoying the peace of having her in his arms for a few more minutes.
Slowly and quietly he got up and got out of the room, to get her a few more moments of peaceful sleep. On his way to the kitchen he passed the room she used as her study room. It was nothing from another world, it was a small room but it had a big window that let the light from the day enter. The room was pristine, because she couldn't concentrate in a messy environment. Papers well arranged in her desk, different colors of highlighters placed one next to the other, her computer clean and close in the middle of the desk and her glasses resting on top of the books and papers, color post-its and notes on the big cork board on the wall. He walked in to get a closer look at the things that were on the board.
It has a little bit of everything, from mathematical formulas, movie tickets to photos. Photos with her best friend since they were little, motivational quotes, cute photos of them together from their first dates, a picture of him in the podium on Monza, even the stickers a fan gave him specifically for her, her VIP passes from the first race she attended as his most important guest. Trying to not make a mess Daniel grabbed a post-it and wrote a cute little message for her and stuck it in the inside of her laptop.
Satisfied with his doing he went to the kitchen to make breakfast before going to train with Mike. He ate his part and left hers in the kitchen for her when she woke up. When he was ready to go, he gave her a sweet kiss on her lips as goodbye and left.
When she woke up the sheets were cold next to her. Checking her phone an unread message from him was there, “I woke up and you looked so at peace that I let you sleep more time. Breakfast it's waiting for you in the kitchen. Have a nice day, see you in the afternoon. I love you.” - Daniel, always a sweetheart.
Barefoot and without brushing her teeth, she had breakfast on top of the counter. Coffee and Daniel’s pancakes gave her the serotonin she needed for the day. A warm long shower and she was ready to start a stressful day of study. With her water bottle and phone in hand she made her way to her study room. It was like she and her best friend were mentaly connected because the second her ass touched the chair her phone pop up with a text message, “You ready?” “Yes, give me a second. I will call you.” Since they were little they studied better together so being in different universities and studying different careers didn't stop them from doing it, it was for moral support too.
When she opened her laptop there was the cute post-it Daniel left for her. In his handwriting with cute little hearts, or what seemed to be hearts, was written “You got this, beautiful. You can do everything you propose.”  It was impossible for her to not smile at his words. Even after years of dating she was still hopelessly in love with him, she blushed like a teennager at every cute and flirty word that left his lips. He was the first thing that came to her mind when she woke up and the last thing too. At all her future plans he was always by her side, every step of the way, at every milestone of her life. Just like she was at every one of his. Their plans involved the other, taking them in consideration. They were not only lovers and partners, but they were also best friends. His note had gone directly to her corkboard, next to their photos. She smiled looking at all the precious memories on her board. But her daydreaming didn’t last long cause her best friend facetime cut her short.
-Hello.- She sat smiling.
Her friend saw the look on her friend and groaned. -Oh god, it’s too early in the morning to be that in love woman. At least wait until I have my second cup of coffee.- She chuckled and shook her head.
-Okay Grinch, relax. Prepare your coffee cause it’s gonna be a long long day.- She put her glasses on and took a deep breath.
Her friend groaned again and dropped her head on the desk -Remind me again why we can't have a Sugar Daddy who would literally died to spoil us or be a trophy wife.
She laughed. -Cause we are independent women. We are not going to depend on an old man nor be some trophy wife. We are feminist and we are going to get our degree to be the best on our jobs.- She nodded trying to make a point.
Her friend glared at her. -You didn't answer why we can’t be a trophy wife. I mean, I can get my degree, shove it up my ass and still be a trophy wife but WITH a degree.
-Oh god, you are impossible.- She rolled her eyes.
-Can we cry? I wanna cry.- Her friend said making a pout.
She looked at the schedule on her laptop. -Not yet, that’s in like three hours so hold your tears and let's study.- Her friend groaned, again, and opened her books.

Daniel arrived at like six p.m and the apartment was almost deserted. Not one single thing out of place, the only sign that someone was in where the lights turned on in the kitchen and the plates of the breakfast clean and dry in the sink. With a water bottle, from the fridge, in his hand he took his phone out and wrote a quick message. “I’m home. Are you here? Are you okay?”  But his answer came right away when the notification ringtone she put especially from him sounded far in the apartment.
He walked towards the study room and raised his brows when he arrived at the door. She was sitting there, her eyes focused on her laptop while her hand wrote rapidly on a paper. Her hair in a weird bun that was held in place with a pencil. Her water bottle in the desk was half drunk and she was biting the corner of her lower lip, a habit of hers when she was deep thinking.
Daniel leaned into the door frame. -Well hello there beautiful.
She didn't take her eyes off the laptop. -Hi.
He frowned. -Did you eat something?- She said nothing and continued writing something down. Daniel walked closer to her and rested against the desk next to her. -Hey.- He tapped her wristed three times and finally she looked at him.
She looked at him, gave him a small smile and continued writing. -What…..did….you asked me?- She turned her head to where he was but her eyes were still fixed on the laptop.
-If you ate something, apart from breakfast.- Daniel read what she was writing and had no clue what it meant. There were numbers, letters and terminology he knew nothing about.
She stopped what she was doing for seconds, moved her eyes around thinking and then continued writing. -Emmm…no. I don’t recall preparing anything.- He squinted his eyes at her making her drop her pen and looked at him. -Sorry I was so focused on all this that the only time I got up was to go peeing.- She stretched her habil hand towards him and he grabbed it.
-We already talked about this babe, you have to eat something. It’s for your health.- Daniel stretched her fingers and massaged her palm.
-I know. I promise from now on I will set an alarm to remind myself to eat something.- Daniel smiled pleased.
-Good.- He kissed her head. -I will prepare you something to eat.- She smiled and nodded. He was walking out of the room when he turned around to look at her again. -Did you put those eye drops the ophthalmologist gave you?- She nodded.
-Yep.- She grabbed something from one of the drawers and showed it to him. -I always have one here.- He nodded proudly and went to the kitchen.
Daniel took his time preparing a sandwich, he placed all the ingredients on the counter and started working on his masterpiece. Each movement was made with pure love. Until he heard her voice. -OH MY FUCKING GOD.- The loud scream made him stop what he was doing and ran to where she was.
In seconds he was there. -Are you okay? What happened? Are you bleeding?- Daniel appeared in the door, with a dishcloth on his shoulder, but he tilted his head to the side at the image in front of him. She was in the chair with her legs to her chest, her head buried between her knees, her arms covering her head. She looked so small, so different from moments prior. Daniel walked slowly towards her, crouched to her level and ran his hand up and down on her leg. -Hey beautiful, what happened?
Slowly she lifted her head and looked at him. She looked exhausted, tears gathered in her eyes. -I don’t understand a single thing. I'm a failure, a disaster. I’m awful.- She buried her head between her knees again.
Daniel shook his head. He got closer to her and rested his chin on her knee. -No, no you are not awful, nor a disaster, not a failure. You are amazing.- She shook her head. -How long have you been studying? On this day I mean.
-Since this morning.- With her head between her knees her words came out all muffled but he understood her.
-And you took a break?- She shook her head. Daniel took a deep breath. -I figured.- He said to himself. -Okay, look at me.- She didn’t move. -Come on….look at me.- She shook her head. -Come on….show me those beautiful eyes of yours or I swear to god I will tickle you.- He started moving his fingers towards her and she started laughing, even if she wasn’t looking at him. She always told him she had ghost tickles and since day one he took advantage of that. Always making her laugh, one of his favorite sounds. She looked at him with her lashes wet from her tears. -There is the most beautiful woman on this freaking planet.- She blushed. -So this is the plan, you are going to come with me on grocery shopping.
She shook her head again. -No Dan, I can’t. I have to continue studying cause- He shook his head too.
-You didn’t take a break since this morning, so you are coming with me to the supermarket even if I have to drag you from this chair, alright?- Daniel raised a brow.
There was a little eye battle but she finally gave in. -Fine.
-Excellent.- He got up. -Now come on, up so we can get going.- He stretched his hand towards her to help her get up.
-I have to change Dan. I can’t go to the supermarket like this.- She pointed to her clothes as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Daniel looked at her up and down. -What’s wrong with your outfit? You looked stunning.
She looked at her outfit. Plush orange pants, the t-shirt from his SPEED AWAY collection and blue socks with yellow ducks. Her bun barely held on with the pen and puffy eyes. She looked at him with a smile on her lips and kissed him. -I love you and you are the most beautiful human being on this earth.- She said caressing his face.
Daniel smiled. -I love you too and I know I’m awesome. Now let 's go. You put on some shoes and I’m going to grab my wallet and keys. Meet me at the front door.- He pecked her lips and walked away.
She ran to their bedroom and grabbed her go to shoes, black tall converse. She almost tripped on her way to the front door but Daniel was already there waiting for her. -Let 's go.
-After you m’lady.- Daniel opened the door for her and let her pass.
-Thank you very much kind sir.- She stood on her tiptoes, placed her hand on his chest and kiss his check.
On the elevator she rested her head on his chest while he passed his fingers along her spine and gave kisses on her head. They arrived at the car and he opened that door for her too. On their way to the supermarket Daniel’s playlist played low on the car.
Daniel told her about his day, at her request. At a red light he turned to look at her while she tried to put her hair back in a bun. Her glasses resting at the top of her nose, the pen that was on her head between her lips and her hands on her hair. Her legs crossed one on top of the other, proudly wearing his t-shirt. and her cute socks.
He was completely and utterly in love with that woman. He loves her wearing comfy clothes, fancy clothes, wearing nothing at all. He loves her on rainy days, sunny days, and cold days. From day to night. Every second of his days. He love her and couldn't imagine a day without doing it.
-Where are we going exactly?- She asked, looking at him.
He laughed. -Why?
-I mean, there’s a supermarket a couple blocks away from home in that direction.- She said pointing in the other direction from where they were going.
-I prefer the supermarket that is in this way.- He said pointing where they were going. She squinted her eyes a little bit nodded.
A couple of minutes later they arrived. The parking lot was pretty empty so there were not many people inside. They entered the supper market and grabbed a cart, which she was in charge of driving it. -What are we going to buy, babe?
-I made a list.- He took his phone out of his pocket and started looking at it.
-I'm surprised, Ricciardo.- She said, raising her brows.
-I like keeping you on your toes.- He said turning around in one of the alleys and she almost crashed into a pile of cans. He laughed a little. He started putting things in the cart. Daniel was telling her all about the last paddock gossip she missed about while she stayed back home studying.
She was half paying attention to what he was telling her and half trying to maneuver the cart around the alleys without nocking things down. -Fucking shit thing.- She mumbled under her breath. Daniel continued walking and turning around alleys and eventually she lost him. She was walking around the supermarket like a lost little girl and calling for him. -Dan, where are you?- While she was looking around, without looking where she was going, she crashed into one of those machines that carried big boxes around. -SHIT SORRY.- She said looking around, even if no-one was around and the machine didn’t have any feelings.
Moments before the little incident Daniel was two corridors down from her. He was looking at the different types of rice and looking on the internet what type of rice was better for the recipe he had in mind, he turned around with two packets of rice in hand ready to ask her opinion. -Beautiful, what rice you- He stopped mid sentence when he looked up and she was nowhere near him. -Beautiful, where are you?- And seconds after that he heard the noise of metal against metal and knew right away that the cause of that noise was his girl.
Looking around he walked until he found her. -What did you do this time, beautiful?
She was resting her arms against the cart, she lifted her head and turned around when she heard his voice. -This.- She pointed to the cart. -This is why I don't drive.
He chucked. -I know.- Daniel walked towards the cart and moved it far from the machine there. -Your carriage m’lady.- He made a little bow and she looked at him confused. -Come on, hop on.
-What? Dan I can't, it's not- She looked around worried.
Daniel opened his eyes big and looked at her. -Hop. On. The. Cart, I said missy. Come on, I'm not gonna repeat myself.- He made a serious face.
-Fine. -She mumbled like a little girl.
Daniel smiled satisface. -Good girl. -He watched her try to hop on the cart and almost fall on her face. He laughed out loud and she looked at him.
-Are you gonna still laughing at me or are you gonna help?- She crossed her arms.
Daniel laughed a little more and then helped her. He kept the cart stadie so that she could get on it without any problem. She sat in the corner of the cart, her front towards him so they could look at each other. When she was safe inside the cart he leant closer, so did she, and they kissed.
-I will never understand how you got your license.- He said, starting to push the cart around.
She shrugged looking around. -I was young and flirted with the guy who took the test. Want to give me your phone so I can tell you what we need?
He nodded and handed her his phone. She smiled at his background, it was a photo of them playing tic tac toe on the sand in Australia in one of their many vacations there. -In other words, cheating.- He said teasing.
She scrolled down her phone and looked around the cart, taking note of the things missing and the ones that were already there. -I didn't cheat, I just simply took advantage of the guy who was a sucker for a pretty face.- She said smiling. -That, we need that.- She pointed at something on one of the shelves.
He stopped and handed it to her. -Aren't we all a sucker for a pretty face?
She raised an eyebrow. -I hope you are a sucker for this pretty face and only this pretty face.
-Of course my love, your face is the only one I'm a sucker for.- She smiled proudly and blushed a little.
-Good.- She pursed her lips and he gave her a little cute kiss.
As Daniel pushed the cart around she looked at him and felt more in love. She love the dichotomy between the Daniel he showed to the cameras, the one who was full optimistic; that always made people laughed and be comfortable around, who had fun like a child and made shenanigans around the paddock, and the Daniel he only showed to her, the one who loves to cook for her even if he sometimes burn the food, that stays up all night designing new things for his clothes collection and want to be every step of the making of his wine, the one who was a little insecure, the one who laughed at the same parts of the movie he saw a million times.
-Here you go.- Daniel toshed her something and she catched it before it hit her face.
She looked at the package in her hands and smiled like a little kid when she saw what it was. -FRIESS.- She even hugged the package.
He nodded. -Yep, I know how much you love those specially and this supermarket is the only one who has it. That's why we are here, so open them and talk to me about what's on that cute big brain of yours.
-I can't open them Dan.
-Yes, we will pay for them when we finish shopping.- He nodded and she looked at him doubtfully, Daniel rolled his eyes and opened them for her. -There you go. Now that you have your comfort food and your comfort person- He pointed at himself. -tell me what got you so stressed.
She started eating between fries. -It’s like every little piece of knowledge I understand and remember disappear when I try to understand another topic, like my brain is too small to fit all the topics I have to study to pass that stupid test.- She kept pointing at the things they needed for the dinner and Daniel put them in the cart. -I feel like a total and complete failure.- He frowned. -How am I supposed to work about this if I can’t remember the little things that make my carrear choice so fucking important?- She passed him a few fries and he gladly took them. -It’s like….it’s like…..life is telling me that I made the wrong choice and that I had to go for the easiest career and not the one I choose cause I’m not as smart as I like to think.- She buried her face in her hands. -I’m gonna end up failing, without a degree and working in some fast food restaurant serving people in the middle of the road.- Daniel stopped the cart abruptly and she almost hit her head.
-Look at me.- She didn’t move and he said her name in a tone that made her realize he was serious. He rarely uses her name, it’s always sweet pet names and calm tones. So when he uses her name it means he was 100% serious about what he was gonna say. So she looked at him. -Don’t ever think about yourself like that again. You are smart, don’t even doubt that. Not for a second. Just like I wrote you down today, you can with anything.- She smiled remembering that morning post-it. -And if you don’t pass that exam, which I don't see possible to happen because you are the smartest person I know and I know a lot of people, you can spend an entire day in bed crying your eyes out about it and I will be there with you but after that life continues. There are more important things than an exam. It's just a piece of paper and a grade, that does not define you in anything. You are so much more than that and I can spend my entire life enumerating all the good things you are and I will still run out of time.- Those words and the pure love look he had in his eyes made her blush and her heart ran wild. - You are studying something that you are passionate about, something that would make you happy while you work at it, and if you are happy doing it you don't work a single day in your life. Doing what you love does not have to hurt all the time, maybe sometime because not everything is 100% fine, but the good moments will kick the asses to the bad ones.- Daniel made a little pause. -And your brain it’s not small and I already told you, you are not a failure. What you are is tired, you did not have a break and your systems lack food, that’s why you think you can’t remember a single thing. You have to eat to energize your brain.- He tapped her forehead. -You are gonna see, tomorrow when you wake up well rested and with a healthy meal in your stomach you are gonna kick Einstein’s ass, cause that’s how smart you are.- She laughed and he smiled pleased at the sound of her laughter.
-You certainly know how to make a woman feel special, Ricciardo.- Daniel shrugged and kissed her.
They continue with their journey around the alleys of the supermarket, a catchy song playing on the speakers that made him move his body at the rhythm of the bit while she sang to him. Daniel made a 360° turn, with the cart and all, making her laugh. Stood in front of her, extended his hand inviting her to dance. Without thinking for a second she took his hand and got off the cart to dance with him. She moved her hips side to side and he copied her moves, the song started sounding a little louder. They sang to each other and enjoyed the spontaneous moment they were having. The alley 3, full of sweet things and coffees, was their dance floor and nothing was broken in their “Dancing with the stars” moment. The song ended and they looked in the eyes with nothing but pure adoration and love with big smiles on their lips. They shared a kiss and laughed at what they just did.
Hand in hand they grabbed the last ingredients for their dinner and walked to the cash register. There was a young woman who was looking at them with a smile on her lips. While Daniel put everything for the girl to cash, she looked around. -Oh god, we are the last ones here?- She looked guilty to the girl behind the register.
She nodded. -Yes, but it’s alright. You two are too damn cute.- She frowned and Daniel looked confused.
-Thanks, but what?
The girl stopped what she was doing and looked at them. -The dance part was sweet.- She blushed and hid her face in Daniel’s back, while he just smiled. -I think we can make a copy of the security tape if you want.- Daniel nodded enthusiastically.
-Yes please, if not much trouble.- He said passing the girl his card.
-Not at all.- She smiled. Daniel kissed his girlfriend's forehead.
After a couple minutes and small chat with the girl in the cash register they walked back to the car with their food and the copy of their cute moment. They put everything in the backseat and he opened the car door for her. On the ride back to their home, with his hand on her thigh, they enjoyed the night breeze on their faces thanks to the windows rolled down.
She kept humming the song they danced moments prior and she even added to their shared playlist. -I will show that video to our kids one day.- Daniel said out of the blue.
She turned to look at him, surprised. -To our kids?
He nodded and gave her a little squeeze. -Yes, to our kids. I have my whole damn life planned with you.- She smiled at his words.
-I have my whole damn life planned with you too.- He smiled widely. -We have to talk about it sometime, to make everything work out.
Daniel stopped at a red light. He turned to look her in the eyes. His hand on her neck brought her closer. -Everything is gonna work out, it’s you and me. Your big brain and mine. Everything is going to be perfect, beautiful.- She nodded smiling.
-My big brain and me love you more and more each day.- She said cupping his cheeks to kiss him.
He pulled apart a little and kissed the tip of her nose. -I love you too.- He pecked her lips one more time and continued driving.
Just like that well known quote says, “You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching, love like you'll never be hurt, sing like there's nobody listening, and live like it's heaven on earth.”. Life with Daniel was like that. He made all the stress she was carrying fly out the window the moment he made her get in his car and drive to the freakin supermarket. They loved each other with all they had, with no buts and with no limits. Loving him was everything that was right to her. They were so in love that they danced in a supermarket alley, sang to the tops of their lungs with the windows rolled down at any hour of the day. Their love was their heaven on earth.

Tumblr media
“you want this one?” you asked, looking at henry as he inspected the yellow lemon. he nodded, “okay, give me your hand,” you grabbed his little hand, wrapping it around the fruit, you helped him tug until it separated from the branch. he squealed in surprise, and you laughed, kissing his temple. “great job, henry! can you help me put it in the basket?” you pointed at it, and your little boy tossed it in. “good boy, my love. now let’s get three more.” you instructed, even though you knew he couldn’t comprehend what you were saying, he was only one year old.
now that you finally had some free time, you traveled to the other side of the world, to the farm you’d been working on for years to build and grow. daniel loved america, and he loved spending his time off there, to disconnect from everything and bask in the silence, it was only natural that you decided to buy some land there and build the perfect getaway. the texas heat was unforgiving, but that day was one of the good ones, it was sunny and hot, but not too much.
as usual, henry was sporting a bucket hat. his collection started growing since his first -and only- visit to the f1 paddock, the other drivers, -the younger ones, specially- started gifting henry little hats from their own merch collections. that day’s hat was flower themed.
after picking up the lemons you moved on to the apple tree. it had huge roots and large branches, the leaves gave the spot the perfect amount of shade, which made it the perfect place to sit down and just enjoy the day.
“i think these might be too tall for us, mister,” you said as you stared at the three, holding henry’s hand as he took a few steps around you. since he started walking about two months ago you had to have your eyes on him at all times, “what do you say we go find daddy?” as he heard that last word he looked up at you, making you laugh, “you like that idea?” you asked, turning around so you could walk back to the house. you looked down at henry, watching his little chubby legs on the green grass. he didn’t have shoes on, because he loved feeling the different textures as he walked, his favorite was the wooden floors of the house there in the farm. “babe?” you called as you entered, placing the basket by the door. “call for daddy,” you told henry.
“da!” henry repeated. you let go of his hand, letting him walk wherever he wanted to as you followed him. “da, da,” he kept talking. since the first time he said it, it became his favorite word.
“i hear my mini man,” you turned to the side, watching daniel walking down the stairs that led to the second floor. he walked to you, wrapping an arm around your waist as you leaned into his side. it took henry one second to waddle to you, raising his arms, wanting to be picked up. you started leaning down when dan stopped you, “careful, i’ve got him,” he grabbed henry in his arms, kissing his cheek.
“i’m okay, you know? i’m pregnant, not sick or something,” you said, running your fingers through henry’s hair,
“still, you already do so much for us, you deserve a break.”
“i don’t need a break, i need your help getting apples from the tree, don’t we, henry?” you said, grabbing dan’s hand and leading him outside, grabbing the basket on your way out.
once you got back to the tree, henry started extending his arms, ready to pick the apples he wanted. you sat against the trunk of the tree, watching them toss the fruit into the basket.
“i didn’t mean to upset you,” daniel said, sitting in front of you, as henry played with the fruits he’d collected.
“you didn’t. i know you’re looking out for me, but you’re worse than you were when i was pregnant with henry,” you raised an eyebrow, a soft smile on your face. “i am still me, i can pick up my child if he needs me,” you said, and watched him open his mouth to speak, “she’s perfectly fine, she’s safe, i can still bend down, tie my shoes, play with henry. i’m six months pregnant, not eight and a half.”
“i just… i want you, all of you to be okay.”
“i know, and i love that you worry and care so much about us, but it’s all gonna be okay. we’ll be alright.” you leaned forward, lifting a hand to his cheek and pressing a quick kiss to his lips.
“i’m sorry,” he started, but you shook your head.
“no need. how about… you make it up to me by playing with your son, who’s missed you so much all week,” you grabbed henry by his middle and placed him in daniel’s arms, “while i go and was this up, make some lemonade, and cut these apples up,” it wasn’t much of a question, seeing as you stood up with the basket in your arms and started walking away as they got up.
through the kitchen window, you spotted them. daniel passed a plastic ball to henry, who tried to kick it, but lost his balance and fell on his bum. you paused cutting the apples, watching as henry started crying, but daniel helped him up, hugged him, and they started playing with the ball again. soon enough their loud chuckles invaded the whole farm.
-
after playing the entire afternoon, the three of you sat against the big apple tree. the shade was just perfect there, and the wind had started picking up. henry was currently holding your phone, too close to his face, daniel’s parents on the other side of the screen as they talked to their grandson. you laughed as dan took your phone from henry, moving it away from his face so he could see them, and so they could see something other than henry’s nose.
“somebody needs a diaper change,” dan said, noticing your baby boy’s focused face and his small frown.
“your turn, dad,” you said, he chuckled. after saying goodbye to his parents, your boys left you for a few minutes, coming back with two glasses of lemonade, and a sippy cup for henry.
“for you, my lady,” dan said, handing you one cup.
“thank you, love,” you smiled. you took a sip, and a few seconds later felt something weird in your belly. “looks like someone likes lemonade,” you placed a hand on your stomach, rubbing it, “come on, girl,” you whispered, wanting to feel her little kicks again.
“she’s kicking?” daniel asked, his eyes bright. you nodded, grabbing his hand and placing it where you felt her movements. “drink some more,” he suggested. after taking another sip you felt it again. “she’s got some powerful legs,” he laughed, you nodded. “come here, henry, feel this,” your baby boy stared at your hands, of course, he had no idea what was happening.
“look, henry, it’s your sister.” you said as daniel pressed henry’s hand on your belly. you drank some more lemonade, and henry looked at you both once his sister started moving. “say hi,”
“da,” henry said, making you laugh.
“say ‘hi, sis’,” daniel tried again.
“sis,” henry repeated. you gasped, since he started talking the only word he’d actually repeat was ‘da’. he’d make other noises, but when asked to talk, he’d just babble or say ‘da’.
“say that again,” you said, opening your camera app and starting recording. “say ‘hi sis’,”
“sis,” he said again, and this time you let out a loud squeal of joy.
“that was so good, henry!” daniel said, lifting him in his arms and kissing his cheek. “that’s your sister right there,” he said, placing henry’s hand back on your belly. “you two are gonna be the best of friends, i can already tell,” he continued speaking softly, you adjusted the camera to capture henry’s wide eyes as he felt his sister kicking, daniel’s bright smile, and the texas sunset of that august day.
“i must say i’m loving the attention,” you laughed, their hands on your belly felt warm, daniel was drawing invisible shapes as henry moved his hands wherever he felt the baby’s kicks.
“you deserve all of the attention, my love. your doing the most marvelous thing right now. i promise you, these next weeks we’re doing anything you want. whatever you feel like doing,”
“i just want to spend time with you. soon enough we won’t outnumber the kids in our house, i want to enjoy these weeks being just us three.”
-
the next morning, you woke up to an empty bed. neither dan nor henry were inside the house. you took a quick shower, figuring they must be outside, playing. once you changed into a large, flowy dress and skipped the shoes, you stepped outside. you walked to the area where you had all of the fruit trees and where the vegetables were growing, but they weren’t there, either. you grabbed your phone, calling daniel.
he didn’t pick up, didn’t need to, you heard the ringtone nearby. you walked that way, seeing them sitting a few meters away from the creek.
“good morning, you two,” you said as you walked to them, avoiding the muddy spots.
“da!” henry yelled as he saw you, you sat next to them, kissing henry’s cheek.
“what were you doing?” you asked, helping henry climb onto your lap.
“we picked up some peaches, came down here to wash them. he liked them,” dan smiled, you ran your hand through his hair, “we saved you some,” he pointed to the same basket you’d used yesterday, inside there sat some peaches and an apple.
“thank you,” you smiled, “this little miss and i are hungry, we skipped breakfast to come look for you boys,”
“aw, sweets,” daniel said, you shrugged. “henry and i were going to play tag for a bit, care to join us?” he asked, you shook your head.
“you boys go ahead, i’ll stay here a bit, yeah?” you passed henry to daniel, who leaned forward to kiss you. henry had enough of it, splitting the two of you apart, which made you laugh. “okay, mister. no need to be rude, you can go now.” you grabbed henry’s hand, and moved so he tapped daniel’s shoulder, “you’re it, dad. run, henry, go!” you cheered for your boy, who ran to the other side of the field, his bare feet guiding him away from his father, who chased after him.
you grabbed one of the peaches from the basket, taking a small bite. the baby liked it. you smiled as you grabbed your phone, taking a picture of the peach in your hand, and your belly.
you uploaded the picture to your instagram, which was filled with pictures of henry.
‘princess peach’ you captioned it.
the world knew you were pregnant, you’d been with daniel for the last race before break, in budapest, and you knew it was inevitable for pictures to come out. now they knew that you were having a baby girl coming in a few months.
-
after eating some of the fruit your had picked out for you, you lay down on the grass, looking up at the sky. it was so blue, and the clouds were so white, it was almost unreal.
“da, da,” you heard henry, you lifted your head, looking around for him.
“look what we found,” daniel said, helping you sit up. he handed something to henry, you extended your hand, and henry handed you a flower.
“oh, it’s so pretty! look, henry, it matches your shirt!” he was wearing a yellow button-up shirt, “here,” you placed the stem inside the little pocket, the petals sticking out. “you look so handsome, my darling boy.” you kissed his cheek, lying back down on the grass, placing henry next to you.
“what were you doing?” daniel asked as he imitated your position.
“finding shapes in the clouds,” you chuckled. “wanna play?” you asked, looking to your side, and noticed henry was falling asleep.
“the best one wins,”
“loser is on diaper duty for a week,” you grinned, raising your eyebrows.
“oh, it’s on. he ate so many peaches today, i do not want to clean that up,” you chuckled, and nodded. henry rolled to his side, and daniel placed him on top of him, moving so he was pressed up next to you. “that’s a dragon,” he pointed up to the sky, you nodded. looking around to look for another one.
“starting off strong, i like it. let’s see if you can keep it up,” you smirked, already spotting the perfect one. “that’s reptar.” you pointed to the dinosaur from one of your favorite childhood cartoons.
“holy shit,” dan said after a few seconds, spotting it. “it’s identical.”
“i know. can you beat that?”
you spent about fifteen minutes waiting for daniel to find something better than yours.
“have fun changing diapers, daddy. princess peach and i appreciate it,” you chuckled as you pecked his lips.

Random question....
For all you fanfic writers out there (irrespective of genre) do you get sad and grieve when you approach the end of a fic then actually finish it?  I am super close to the end of a story I’ve been writing for eighteen months and I’m genuinely upset about it.  I don’t know how to feel and I don’t know how to start it’s sequel even though I have plenty of ideas for it....

When Emma Falls in Love - DR3 x Fem!OC
Tumblr media
Summary: Christmas involves the same thing every year for Em. A week in Liverpool, formal clothing, and returning to her apartment to shower and have a bottle of wine to forget how bad it was. But this year she's spending it in Australia with Dan and his family. No big deal.
Words: 11.4k
Warnings: Mentions of past bad relationships, mentions of cheating, mentions of toxic family relationships. Panic attacks, worry, mentions of sex (but nothing explicit) and mentions of sex toys.
AN: HEEEEEEEYYYYYYYY remember us? First things first - apologies for how long this took. The plan was Christmas, but life has been ridiculous and too busy and we just apologise. Thank you for still being here and enjoying reading more about Em and Dan!
December 2018
When she was growing up, Em never kept a diary. She was the odd one out for many reasons in primary school, that was just one of them. She was too afraid of her mother finding it when “cleaning”, reading what was on her mind and telling her to stop. She hadn’t started it as a kid, and it didn’t begin when she was an adult either. But if she did have one, the first words on the page for December 22, 2018, would have been "I think I'm in love with Dan." And to say "I think" would have been a blatant lie because she knew.
She knew that night in the bar for his birthday that she was going to fall for him. She knew in Philadelphia as she sang that she only bought that dress for him to take off. She knew in Austin when he kissed her in front of another woman.
That morning in July when she woke up from one of the greatest nights of sleep in her life with Dan’s arms around her and his snoring lulling her back to sleep like white noise. Every single time he let Blake out of their shared taxi first and circled the block to come into hers when he got back from travelling. The way he never arrived home without a bouquet of flowers because she’d once said she never thought she could buy herself some. But that afternoon in Perth she couldn’t hide from the realisation anymore.
She’d been working in the early afternoon after she made lunch for the two of them and Isaac, coming out to find her boys napping on the couch. The plan had been for them to watch a film while they waited for her but toddlers were not known for their patience. She couldn’t blame Isaac for sleeping, and once Dan got comfy he could nod off anywhere.
The two of them had been up early that morning picking Isaac up for a day out and a sleepover to let Michelle finish getting ready for Christmas. Once they made it back to the farm it was running around and playing at the pool with a stop for lunch. Em had prepped sandwiches for their lunch before disappearing to work for a few hours so she didn’t fall even further behind. And now they were fast asleep, blond curls against Dan’s off season stubble.
The craving to curl up on the couch and cuddle into them was overwhelming. There was nothing else she wanted at that moment, just hug them and kiss Dan and stay there forever. But she couldn’t.
Yes, she was Auntie Emmy to Isaac - a fact he’d announced to them that morning running to greet her with chubby cheeks and “ANNIE EMMYYYYYYYY” - but Auntie Emmy was Uncle Dan’s friend. And nothing else.
She was just his friend. Even though she was the only one sleeping in his bed, even when he was basically living in her crappy flat in London. Even when it was her name he groaned out when they were together as he pulled her close. And that was why she couldn’t admit it to him. Admitting it to herself felt nearly too much.
It hurt. Oh it ached. But it was better to hurt a little bit and enjoy getting to have Danny in the way that so many people didn’t know Daniel Ricciardo, than say how she felt and break the spell. She could suck it up and bury her feelings and stay by his side as his best friend. If she didn’t say it out loud then it wasn’t real and if it wasn’t real then it couldn’t hurt her badly.
And she couldn’t tell him. She couldn’t see his face fall, couldn’t hear “we said we were just friends, nothing more.”. Couldn’t bear to have to leave people who for the first time in her life seemed to actually like her because she’d ruined it. So she’d stay quiet and get to have Christmas with people who seemed to want her there. She’d enjoy summer in December and have those weeks. Especially if it meant she got time with Isaac.
Em had fallen in love with him the first time she met him in real life in Abu Dhabi, and the feeling was mutual. She could count how many times she’d seen him in person on both hands, but he was as crazy about her as she was about him. His cheeky smile warmed up her heart. The way he ran to give her a hug after the first time they met was one of her favourite things in the world. How he reached out to her so she would hold him during the insanity of that first weekend. But it was the way that he was so much like Dan that made her heart grow ten sizes.
Physically they didn’t look alike apart from those curls they’d all inherited from Grace, but their personalities were identical. Dan joked it was why Isaac liked spending so much time with her, but she smiled and brushed it off. For her own sanity she couldn’t let that get into her head. She couldn’t do it. Not when whatever they were had an expiration date and she didn’t know how long it would last.
All of that combined meant she couldn’t resist watching them for an extra couple of moments, enjoying how relaxed they were snoozing together. She took a photo of them with her phone to secure the memory forever. She wasn’t sure what caused him to stir, if it was the small noise from the camera or if it was her moving, but Dan opened his eyes slowly and focused on her. A smile began to go across his face.
“Wanna join us? We can stay like this for a while.”
She desperately wanted to say yes. She wanted to lie down next to Dan and fall asleep with his arm around her. But she shouldn’t and she couldn’t. Anything that wasn’t at least platonic seeming had to stay just them. Sure Dan had put an arm around her shoulder or waist with his parents, but not with Isaac. She didn’t want that with him. He was too small and she didn’t want to confuse him with acting like a couple when they weren’t. If she couldn’t explain what was happening to herself then she couldn’t to him.
“I’m gonna get a start on dinner,” Em whispered, blurting out the first excuse she could think of. “Is pasta ok?”
The moment the words left her lips, she made her one fatal mistake. Kissing the top of Dan's head and then Isaac's cheek. It was supposed to be the briefest moment, a peck and then go to the kitchen. But the moment she leaned down to kiss Isaac's head his litttle hand reached out for her, not letting go. He didn't say anything, just grumbled and rubbed his head against Dan's chest before settling back down.
"I think you have to stay for a while. C'mon." He shifted slightly to let her slip beside them, settling down. "I know what you're thinking. It's fine."
"Danny-"
"I promise. It's fine." She should have stood straight up and headed out. Before she could even think about moving away Isaac woke up enough to smile at her, moving across to have half his body over Em, half on Dan. Then she was definitely not going anywhere, not when his tiny hand clung to her shirt to hold her there.
"I always knew he'd be a heartbreaker and steal someone's girl at some point in his life. I just never imagined it'd be mine."
"He's got that Ricciardo grin and those curls, what can I say?" Dan chuckled lowly at her words, his chest shaking as he held it back.
"That's not fair, I saw you first."
"I'm not some toy, you don't need to fight him over me."
"I mean if I need to I will." It was Em's turn to keep her laughter down, swallowing it so she didn't wake the sleeping toddler.
"No, it's fine. You don't need to."
"Just had to be sure."
She really didn't mean to fall asleep. She shouldn't have, she wanted to just stay for five minutes before carefully moving Isaac across and standing up to do something. But having Dan's chest as a pillow and Isaac as a tiny weighted blanket didn't help her. Dan smelled like the shower gel they were using and home, Isaac's baby shampoo mixing and making her feel peaceful and dozing off easily.
When she opened her eyes she thought she'd find her fast asleep boys, but instead they were wide awake. The youngest was staring at the film he hadn't finished, the oldest looking straight down at her when Em looked up.
How was she not supposed to fall in love with him? That broad smile and big eyes and how was she supposed to keep it platonic when he looked at her like she hung the moon and stars every single day. He called her his moon once and the compliment made her blush for a week. It was impossible to not fall in love with him, and that was the moment she admitted it. The way he stole tiny kisses while Isaac was distracted. She was gone.
They stayed like that for the afternoon, what was supposed to be a homemade meal turning into driving out for pizza for the three of them. Isaac stayed on her hip until they got him into a highchair, laughing and enjoying his food. She felt at home and happy and was so glad she was there.
It was why she said yes when he asked her what she was doing for Christmas and if she wanted to come to Australia with him. She missed him when he had a double header abroad, she couldn't imagine spending six weeks apart when he went home for Christmas. They could have done it and would have been fine. They'd done it before, but that was before feelings and sex and friends with benefits was added to the mix they had going on.
Em missed him back when they just texted and had a couple of calls, so she had to say yes. But it was terrifying to get on that plane with Dan to go to Perth. It took a call from Grace insisting she wanted Em there and everyone was looking forward to seeing her to make Em feel like it was ok.
Once she made the decision to go to Australia to spend weeks there with Dan it wasn't too scary, but the fact that she was introduced to Dan's world was. Especially now that she was slowly admitting that she'd fallen in love with him. Since the start Em had tried to deny it to herself, insist that it wasn't true. That she had no feelings for him apart from friendship and being proud of him.
But that was like saying the sun wasn't going to come out the next day. On those days where Em wasn't sure about it herself, he made her sure. If she didn't know better she'd think that was his own personal mission to make her fall in love with him. There were texts, calls, facetimes when he probably didn't have time. A text telling her to open the door because she had a delivery. How could she not fall for him?
The easiest way to fall in love with him was what he did every single trip home. She'd leave a sandwich in the fridge before she went to bed, and he came back to her tiny apartment. He had his own one that he could be in, he could go back to somewhere comfy and warm rather than her tiny one bed where the heating rarely worked. But he stayed with her. He took over doing things to make her life better, buying new sheets that were more expensive than she'd ever pay because they were softer and calling the landlord to make him fix the heating after he came back from Brazil and the apartment was freezing.
She couldn't help falling deeper and deeper in love with him when he slid into bed and wrapped his arms around her, whispering how happy he was to be back home. He could have been comfortable and warm in his apartment but instead he was there with her. The chill in the air was ignored as they pulled whatever clothes were on off, Dan marking her body as his. Week after week that was exactly what happened in beds around the world as she travelled to the US and Abu Dhabi to watch him race. She was starting to believe that maybe they did belong together as night after night they got into the same bed, whispering sweet nothings and bringing each other pleasure before curling up to sleep.
It's what happened at the farm when they were alone. Officially Em had a guest room to herself, but Dan's room became theirs. She spent so much of her days stepping outside of her comfort zone, it was exhausting and made her stomach ball up, but being with him was easy. Waking up with his arms around her was perfect. Getting into bed with him every night felt normal. It was terrifying and normal and brilliant. It was easy for her once she got over her worries, especially after that day with Isaac on the couch. His tiny hand over her chest became the reminder that what she thought would be a bad day wasn't so bad. It's part of why she wished Isaac could have been there the night she met Dan's friends.
She knew what coming to Australia when Dan went home for the winter break involved. And when she was invited she didn't even think about it, just went for it. She knew she was going to be introduced to his favourite places in his hometown, spending most of their nights out on the farm, getting to be around his family, and some nights out with his home friends to meet them. She could excuse herself once or twice from nights out because she was never a big fan of it, but she could let the social butterfly she was accompanying go out to hang out with people. He didn't get to see his friends for most of the year, she was more than happy to stay home with her huge to read list on her kindle or a good movie.
But Dan wanted her there. He wanted to spend time with her and his friends and have them all together, and she couldn't say no to those big brown eyes. Spending time with his family was easy, she knew most of them and those she didn't know at least knew of him. But the bigger issue was when she met his friends.
It was supposed to be easy. A get together with his mates so they could catch up and everyone who lived in Perth could finally meet the famous Em. There was just one problem.
Em wasn't good with people.
It wasn't that people didn't like her, it wasn't even that she didn't like people, it was that whenever she was around people she got tired quickly and couldn't deal with them for too long. Dan was one of the rare people she didn't hate being around for more than a few minutes. He'd promised it wouldn't be anything fancy or crazy, that she didn't need to stress about it, but she still worried.
She liked to think that it would have been different if they met somewhere else. In a bar or club where she could have made an excuse to go outside for a few minutes, be somewhere neutral. But meeting at the farm was somehow worse. Dan had told her to stay by his side and she did, but she felt like she was being a bother. He told her that she didn't need to do anything, she was a guest too, but her mother's words kept going around in her head. She should be helpful, she should be useful, she should be this that and the other. If she didn't help at gatherings then what use was she? Sitting next to Dan cutting tomatoes and onions for the burgers wasn't enough.
She shouldn't feel like she was suffocating when she was with his friends. They all seemed lovely, the guys who'd known Dan since he was a kid and told her stories about what he got up to in school, girlfriends who were genuinely sweet asking her about England and her work. But it felt like it was too much. The flickering light from the firepit and the music playing and the voices made her brain go a million miles an hour, all she wanted was to get out of there. Curl up and bed and read a book. She stood there smiling and she couldn't even lean against Dan because they were supposed to be just friends. They were friends. It's how he introduced her. Em, his friend from England. Not Emmy, that was only for him, but Em.
Nobody there had any idea that as soon as the parties and dinners were over he snuck into her bed. That when he got back from being all around the world he came to her home. She was just Em and she had no idea what she was doing there. She didn't know what they were but just friends didn't cut it anymore, and even being outside on the farm it felt like she couldn't get a deep breath into her lungs. The air slowly left her body and she could barely get it in.
She wouldn't forgive herself if she ruined Dan's night. He was so happy there, tanned and grinning as he talked to people. Em decided another beer to replace her empty one and a deep breath in the kitchen would help. Just two minutes away from the crowd. She went in, grabbed two bottles from the fridge and took a few deep breaths to calm herself down. She could do it. She'd be fine and she'd get through the rest of this night. She could do it.
"Thought you were into blondes, mate," it was clear as a bell even through the noise, a dagger hitting into Em's chest. Did she seem like just a girl?
"Shut up, it's not like that." She knew they were just friends. But hearing it like that was different. It was the straw that broke the camel's back and she didn't remember the last time she wanted to cry that badly. She wanted the ground to open up beneath her and just swallow her whole so she can hide but she wasn’t lucky enough. She blinked back tears, ignoring the knot growing in her stomach and the anxiety seeping into every pore. Em’s heart raced and she could hear the whooshing sound in her eardrums. Why was she there? The questions bubbled through her brain but that was the loudest. Why did Dan invite her there? Why was she there? Why did he want her to be in Perth?
Em couldn’t stay there anymore. If she stayed out with everyone she’d break down and start crying and the last thing Dan needed was her dramatics. She didn’t want to ruin the reunion and the good time he was having. So she took a deep breath, had a sip of her beer, and pretended she heard nothing. She just needed to keep it together for long enough so Dan didn’t suspect anything. She could smile and nod as if she didn’t care about what his mates said.
All she needed to do was pretend that she was fine, and then she could run back inside and be alone. She felt terrible just thinking about it. She couldn't do one fucking thing right and be a normal person for one night and have a normal night. It just made her feel awful for Dan because he had done everything to make her comfortable. Not just that night, but he'd changed his home so she felt at home. He insisted he was in charge of the burgers so that he could make one that was cooked the way she enjoyed it - a squirt of ketchup, one slice of cheese, wrapped in two napkins so her fingers didn't get greasy. He got her a Coke Zero or a lemon San Pellegrino so she had options when she didn't want a beer. There were even some of her favourite songs on his playlist for that night, Paramore playing out over the group. He did every single thing right. But she was ruining it all.
Em tried hiding how she was feeling but it was useless. The second she was back at Dan's side he knew something was wrong. The question was quiet, asking if she was ok, but her nod was too fast and she could tell that he didn't quite believe her. Dan's brown eyes stayed on her as she tipped the rest of her bottle back.
"Mind if I head to bed?" She was proud of how even her voice sounded.
"You sure you're ok? What's up?"
"I'm fine, just jetlagged and tired still. I'll be fine."
"See you in a lil bit?" She didn't answer him, making excuses and quick comments so she didn't start crying around new to her people. It was saying how lovely it was to meet them and saying they'd get coffee or meet before she went back to England. She was so polite and correct she almost sounded like her mother and it made her want to vomit. A final quick squeeze on Dan's shoulder and she was gone.
As soon as she was in the house she just had to do a quick trip to the bathroom, change her clothes, and go into bed. But she couldn’t go into the room she'd been sleeping in. That was Dan's bedroom and she couldn't switch the light on or people would see. So in the fading light of dusk she grabbed her pjs, the book she'd been reading, and the bottle of water she kept on her nightstand. From there she went to the guest room that was supposed to be her room. Dan had mentioned it'd be her room in Abu Dhabi, just across from his. That first night he'd insisted she didn't have to sleep there if she didn't want to and they'd ended up in his bedroom and Em didn't want to leave. But now she had to be in her own room. It'd be fine.
The last thing she wanted anyone to see was her crying. Somehow she got the door of the guest room closed without letting out a sob, panic growing in her chest. Stupid, stupid, stupid. She shouldn't be crying. She had no reason to cry. She knew what she was doing.
Her back slid against the door as she ended up on the ground. Her sobs turned to gasps as she struggled to get a deep breath, thoughts burning her head. She wanted to be curled up in the bed that she'd spent the last week sleeping in. She wanted Dan's arm around her, wanted to sit on his lap and sip from his beer bottle. Wanted to forget that the night had even happened. That the man who'd been sharing her bed for the last six months preferred blondes. That the man who she'd been falling in love with might not feel the same way, and they'd agreed they were just friends and said that they weren't going to break the rules and love each other but she had. She wanted her brain to shut up with the "why the fuck does he sleep with me then" that was filling her mind with doubts.
But more than all of that she wished she was brave enough to leave. Pack her bag and go to the airport and fly back to London. Because Dan deserved so much better than anything she could offer. He deserved a beautiful blonde woman who didn't freak out during a party and could afford to rent an apartment with working heating and didn't run away to hide and cry because she couldn't cope. Of course he wouldn't pick her.
But she could barely move. Somehow she managed to stand up once she'd caught her breath, pulling on her tshirt and leggings to sleep in. From there she made it to the bed, lying and pulling up the blanket to try cocoon herself as her tears kept falling. All she wanted was for Dan to magically appear and hold her to stop her chest from feeling so tight. A hug from Dan was magical, it'd make the pressure go away in no time. But he was with his friends and she didn't blame him. She was his friend. They were just friends and she had absolutely no right to be upset about it, but it hurt.
She wasn't planning on getting a lot of sleep that night. The awful feeling in her chest wasn't getting any better, her heart was still racing, and her head ached thanks to crying so much. Finally the tears stopped and she turned onto her side in the too big bed.
A knock on the door made her close her eyes and force her breathing to even out. She didn't want Dan to see her like that. She couldn't explain what she was feeling, she couldn't start rambling about it because then she'd have to admit how she felt and that wasn't going to happen. She couldn't admit that she'd broken every rule they'd come up with and fallen in love with him. She couldn't lose him. She couldn't lose his friendship and what they had so she had to stay quiet.
"Emmy? You awake?" Em should have known he wouldn't leave even if she didn't answer, listening as he padded around to her side of the bed and knelt down, his thumb brushing the still damp skin on her cheek.
**
The second Emmy squeezed his shoulder as she said she was still jetlagged and going to bed, Dan knew something was wrong. She hadn't been ok since she got back from the kitchen with their drinks, but watching her nod and fake smile as she went back inside felt so wrong. And then he stared at their room, waiting for a light to go on and the curtains to close. But nothing happened and it felt even worse.
He knew she wasn't a fan of big parties, his friends were more like him than her and were loud but she'd been ok. He made sure she was stuck to his side for the evening, she smiled when he handed her a perfectly wrapped burger made just the way she liked them. Dan knew it wasn't easy for her, she'd told him that she found big groups hard to deal with. She was the dictionary definition of an introvert who preferred to sit with a book in silence rather than be surrounded by loud people. But she was fine.
He'd asked a couple of times, not wanting to annoy her by constantly thinking something was wrong. He'd offered if she wanted to go inside and hide out for a while he'd make excuses but she insisted she was fine. Emmy ate her burger and snacked on some chips while chatting with his mates. He heard her laugh and one of the lads made a comment about how Dan kept staring at her. He was happy.
And Em was fine until she'd leaned over to offer to get him another beer when she was getting hers. He knew she heard what Mark said, his quip about blondes. The shut up didn't go fast enough and she'd been close enough to hear. She came back looking like someone had punched her in the stomach, big eyes sad even under her fake smile. There was nothing Dan could do to make her feel better.
What he wanted to do was pull her onto his lap, arms around her waist as they shared a drink. He'd tell her that yeah he'd slept with blondes before, dated some as well, but he was hers. He was so fucking crazy about her it was insane. Dan was absolutely in love with her, and terrified to say it because she could do so much better than him. They'd promised they'd stay friends, falling in love wasn't on the list.
But he couldn't even describe how much he loved her. He loved her long brown hair, the way it fell down her shoulders and back. He loved standing behind her and brushing it out to apologise for the mess he'd made it by wrapping it around his hand and pulling her hair the way that made her groan in all the right ways, using it as an excuse to kiss along her neck. He loved the way she smiled at him. How she made jokes and laughed at them herself. How she wrapped her arms around him and welcomed him home. The carefully covered sandwich that waited for him.
He didn't want any blondes. He wanted his gorgeous, brunette Wrinkles, and just maybe in the future if he was lucky enough he'd get to have gorgeous little babies with her hair and eyes and personality. He'd never, ever wanted that until now. And then it felt like she was slipping through his fingers with one evening.
She finished her beer, excused herself saying something about jetlag, was sweet and polite and so un-Emmy it hurt, and whispered to him that she was going to bed. The going to bed wasn't a surprised, she was still jetlagged and had been tired before they even got to Australia. She was the first to head to bed every night anyway. But the way she did it worried him.
Even around his family she kissed his head before she left the room to go to bed. It was what they did when there was people around and they couldn't actually kiss because of the comments. She'd move his curls from his forehead and give him a quick kiss there or on his cheek, or if he was sitting she'd kiss the top of his head. When they were alone he'd go to bed with her, but if he was staying up she'd peck his lips and wait for him in bed.
There was none of that. Instead she gave him a tiny, sad smile and squeezed his shoulder. Like they were just friends. Like she didn't share his bed every night. It was like a knife in his back, a kick in the stomach. That was enough to tell him that something was very, very wrong. He didn't expect a kiss, but he never thought that would be it.
It was all his fault, and the second he realised their bedroom light wasn't going on he knew it. She was nothing like his friends, his life was so different to hers, but he wanted his people to love her. He needed them to. He was so used to the way their lives were intertwined that he didn't think. He was so excited to be home and happy to see his friends and introduce them to her that he made the wrong choice. He should have had it at some neutral place, brought her to a bar to meet everyone. The way he'd done it when she met his family, how it was easier because it was a new place for them all. But he took the party to her one safe place in a foreign country and that wasn't fair on her.
It wasn't how he imagined the night ending. All he wanted to do was hold her. That was his plan for the night. Get into bed, hug his girl, steal some kisses, and call it a night. He wasn't even thinking about sex that night, just curling up with Em. He knew she'd be too tired to do anything and he'd probably have too many beers to make it good for her. So he wasn't even going to try to make a move. He'd hold her, sleep drooling into his pillow, and not have the alarm on so he could have a chill morning with her. Dan was too used to going to bed holding his Emmy, falling asleep with her in his arms and her hand against his chest. And then she was gone and he had the biggest hole in his chest knowing he'd ruined it all.
Dan had no idea what to do. He couldn’t kick his friends off the farm telling them his girl wasn’t ok and needed him. Firstly Em wasn’t his girl, not to them. He’d said over and over that they were friends and she was visiting. Nobody truly believed him, but it was the official story. He couldn’t make them leave but his brain was screaming that he needed to go to Em right then. Something was wrong and he needed to fix it. He needed to make sure she was ok. But all he could do was wait and yawn.
"You alright, DR?” One of the guys asked him.
“Yeah, just exhausted. Nightmare of a season if I’m honest. Looking forward to next year! Maybe I’m getting too old now I’m turning 30?” It was a half joke that got a laugh from the assembled guests. Fortunately they took it for what it was and started making their excuses to leave. An hour later he watched the last people leave as he waved. Once those lights were gone from the driveway he ran back to the house as quickly as he could get in.
His heart broke as he opened the bedroom door to find the empty room in complete darkness. When he switched the light on it was even worse, Em’s belongings still there. Her pillow, the blanket she loved, her Snorlax plushie he’d brought her back from Japan, even her Kindle. Only her water bottle and the book she was reading were gone.
It was a punch in the gut to realise the only other room she could be in was his least used guest room. The fact that Emmy thought she needed to stay in another room felt wrong. His room was their room. He’d made sure to decorate it to be similar to their room in London, parcels arriving to the farm the week before they arrived. The fairy lights, the purple curtains, the scented candles, the extra soft sheets and bed linen to make her smile. It was all for them. It was to make Emmy happy and feel like she was at home because in the back of his head there was a hope that it could be their home in the future. Dan had thought it was working, but now it felt like it was falling apart.
It took a few seconds for Dan to get the courage together to knock on the spare room door. He was scared Emmy would tell him to leave, would tell him to go away. But instead there was silence. He knocked again but the same lack of answer was the response so he decided to go in.
The room was in absolute darkness apart from the faint moonlight coming through the window. It was enough that Dan could make out Em resting on the bed, blankets up to her chin. All Dan wanted to do was get into bed with her, to spoon against her and hold her close, but he knew she wouldn’t like that. So instead he walked around to her side and knelt in front of her, stroking a lock of hair falling over her cheek. He didn’t know if she was in the mood for hugs, didn’t know if she wanted anyone, so he didn’t want to do too much. He saw how her eyes were closed and could feel her damp skin under his thumb. Em’s breathing was too even, she wasn’t really asleep.
“Emmy? I know you’re awake Baby girl.” It took a moment for her eyes to open as she looked up at him.
“I was tryna sleep.”
“I know. But why aren’t you in bed?”
“I am.” Her words were short. “This is a bed.”
“It’s not our bed, Beautiful.” She was at least looking at him, but something still wasn’t right. “C’mon back to bed.”
“I’m fine, D. Go on, it’s fine.”
“It’s not fine. You’ve been crying.” She looked like she was about to start crying again, Dan holding her hand and running his thumb along the back of it.
“I’m fine, Dan. I’m fine. I’m just tired, it’s been a long day. Go to bed.”
“Not without you.” He watched as her gaze softened slightly and he just wanted to kiss her to make her smile. “Can I like down here with you and give you a hug?”
“You don’t have to, Dan. We can just go to sleep.”
“But I want to. If you want me to.”
“…That’d be nice.” It took a few seconds for Em to respond and Dan was terrified she’d say no. He’d accept it, but he wouldn’t like it. He got in behind her, pulling Em against his chest. Her whole body was tense as he turned her around so they were in their usual sleeping position. She began to relax as his hand rubbed her back, Em’s head finally resting against his chest.
“You know, Snorlax is all alone in the other room. And our bed is way comfier than this one.” He kept his hand moving as she tensed up again, looking into Dan’s eyes.
“I’m too tired to move.”
“Nobody said you have to move. Trust me?” There was a nod and he pulled her over to the other side of the bed before stepping out. It was easy to pick her up and carry her out to their room, carefully depositing her back in their bed before he got in beside her. “See? Back where we belong and without you needing to move a single one of your cute toes. And back with your fluffy friend.”
It was quiet between them for a few moments, something Dan mostly expected. Whenever Em got like this she always went quiet while she thought. Finally he heard her bare whisper.
“I’m sorry I ruined your night.”
“You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for. You didn’t ruin anything, you never could. I’m sorry I invited everyone around and had them all invading your space. I shouldn’t have.”
“Dan.” She leaned up and kissed his jaw to make him smile. “It’s your house and your friends, of course you should have. It’s fine.”
“No it’s not. I should have done it differently, we should have gone somewhere else. And believe me when I tell you that you can’t ruin anything. Even if you tried to ruin something you couldn’t.”
“You’re too nice to me.” The hollow way she said it broke a little part of Dan’s heart.
“Emmy I promise. Everyone should be nice to you because you deserve it. You deserve happiness and goodness. And a whole lot of cuddles.”
“Will you cuddle me?” He couldn’t help but hold her even closer at her request.
Dan had no idea which lucky star was looking out for them but it felt like there was a whole constellation instead of just one star. He knew Em wouldn’t do it but he was ready for her to kick him out of the room. Instead he was so damn lucky that he got to hold her while she dozed asleep. He didn’t have the guts to try to explain the comment she’d overheard, he wasn’t going to push his luck, but at least he got to hold her. They could keep going from there.
Em couldn’t remember when she actually fell asleep. She was positive that she wouldn’t sleep at all that night, but Dan’s arms around her and his heartbeat under her ear was the best sleeping pill to ever exist. She didn’t know how he did it but he always managed to make her drift off. Even on the worst nights when her brain wouldn’t shut up he did it.
She woke up too early, the sun barely rising and illuminating the room through the blinds. She shot awake at the realisation that Dan wasn’t against her back anymore. At some point in the night she moved from Dan spooning her to her turning around and cuddling into him like she always did. Her face was buried against Dan’s chest, his arms holding her tight, and their legs tangled between each other. She raised her head slightly, Dan grumbling at her moving, and kissed his chest before going back to sleep with him.
The next time she woke up it was full morning. The sun was coming in through slits in the blinds and felt completely opposite to her emotions. She was so exhausted. Em had cried herself to exhaustion, her anxiety and nerves filling her. All she wanted to do was curl up in bed with her book and preferably with Dan cuddling her. But she was so tired she barely even noticed Dan kissing her shoulder and gently leaving her in bed. He was probably just going to the bathroom before coming back to the warmth and cuddle her.
She must have dozed off, she had no idea how long he was gone for, but she woke up to kisses on her cheek and the scratch of his off season stubble against her skin. The smile on her face was automatic. Waking up that way was one of her favourite things in the world, kisses from the man she was falling for were the best feeling and she wouldn’t change it for anything in the universe.Without even thinking Em hugged him back, almost forgetting the words from the evening before. After a horrible night all she needed was Danny. Em just wanted her human weighted blanket over her.
“I made breakfast,” Dan whispered, lips still glued to her skin. “I’ve got your coffee and toast and that jam you like. Figured you wouldn’t want to get up so it’s here whenever you want it.::
“Huh? You didn’t have to do that.” She looked up at him with disbelieving wide eyes. How could he get up to make breakfast and bring it into her after everything that happened? He did it more often than not when they were in England, but she didn’t think he’d do it that morning.
“You always say that, and I always say I do it because I wanna. Are we gonna have this conversation again?”
“No, not really. Thanks for doing it anyway.” She caught him in a kiss but as she went to move he didn’t let her.
“Don’t thank me. Especially considering it’s gonna get cold cause I’m too comfy to move.”
“Dan…”
“Five minutes.”
Like every morning when Dan asked for five minutes in bed with her, those five turned into ten, then fifteen, and then she lost count. It started with kisses against Em’s neck and her hands running along his shoulders and back. But it ended with their clothes somewhere on the floor, fingers laced and moaning each other’s name. Coffee could be reheated, toast could be eaten cold or remade. But none of it mattered when Dan was inside her, whispering how good she felt and how she was the best girl, giving her another reminder that it was still them. Inside the walls of their bedroom it was always going to be them. If that was all she was going to get, it was going to have to be enough. Dan’s groans and gasps helped silence Em’s ghosts for a little while so she took advantage.
The rest of the day involved Dan looking after her while they had a lazy day. A few small excuses, a rescheduled afternoon with his family blamed on hangovers, and they decided to either stay in the bed or on the couch and do nothing. Dan insisted it was payback for the mess of the night before. Em didn’t particularly care about his reasons as long as she was by his side.
It was how they spent their days in Perth, mostly glued to each others sides except for if Dan was going to Michael to start working on a training plan or see his friends. She started to get used to being a part of his life in Australia. Dan made sure that none of the events were at the farm, always at a restaurant or bar unless it was just his family. Every single time they went anywhere Dan whispered in her ear before they went in that she was the one in charge. Say a word and they’d be on the way home. She was trying to fit into his life just like he was trying to keep her safe, and Em couldn’t thank him enough for it.
She was starting to get used to Perth, relaxing more as she spent more time there. But as Christmas got closer she lost her chill. Two days before Christmas she went through the clothes she’d brought with her and none of them were good enough for an event. She had no idea what a Ricciardo Christmas involved, but none of her outfits were right. She had some cute summer dresses, but they were normal everyday things. She’d wear them to the beach or to lunch or maybe even to dinner with Dan’s friends, but not for a proper day. There was nothing formal like what she’d wear to her family’s Christmas dinners that met her mother’s approval.
Em knew Dan would say she looked good in anything she wore, but she was terrified. All she wanted was for them to like her. The idea that Dan’s family might not like her was scary, and she needed to make sure that she was perfect. She couldn’t ruin it over clothing. Em had hidden most of the anxiety she had around being good enough for them but that night it was too much. Her stomach was in knots and she kept fidgeting in bed. The same page was read over and over, but she had no idea what it said. She pretended it was fine until Dan kissed her cheek, pulling her book from her hands as she jumped.
“Emmy what’s wrong?”
“Huh?” She shook her head and looked over at him.
“You haven’t turned the page in like fifteen minutes, you jumped when I kissed your cheek, and your feet keep moving. You’re overthinking. So talk to me, what’s going on?”
“What if they don’t like me? I didn’t bring anything proper to wear because you kept saying it was hot and I don’t look proper. I should have brought something proper with me.”
“If who doesn’t like you?” The concern in his voice made her want to melt.
“Your family, Dan.”
“Emmy…Baby you know they lo-like you already. Mum’s the one who invited you. Isaac absolutely loves you and is obsessed with you, ‘Chelle made a joke that you’re gonna have to have him on your lap when we’re eating. You can wear any of the dresses you’ve been wearing. You look phenomenal in them. I’m gonna wear shorts so you’ll be fine. What’s this about?” Her head spun. Shorts? At Christmas? No no no. What?
“Huh? Not a suit? Or at least trousers and a shirt? You’re wearing shorts?”
“I’m not wearing a fucking suit, it’s summer. It’s way too warm to do that.”
“Oh.”
“We can head out tomorrow, find a new dress for you if you want. But if you want my opinion you should wear that little red one you have, it’s cute. You look good in all your summer dresses, but red is kinda Christmassy, right?”
“But it’s a summer one?”
“And it’s probably gonna be like thirty. What’s wrong with that?”
Her head was filled with the reminder of the year before, of her mother’s glare at the heels Em made herself wear because if she didn’t she’d barely be allowed into the party. But they were only Primark so they weren’t good enough. And she didn’t have many presents for Dan’s family and
“Emmy. What’s up? Talk to me.”
“It’s stupid. But if I didn’t have changes for the different parts of Christmas Day and if I wasn’t wearing a formal dress and heels and men weren’t in suits then it wasn’t acceptable. Plus I only have little presents not proper gifts, I don’t know what to do.”
“Calm down. It’s ok. All you need to do is turn up as yourself, that’s it. We’re having a barbecue and hanging out by the pool cause it’s way too hot for anything else, I promise. We’ll be in swimwear most of the time.”
The next morning Em was still half convinced she should try to have something proper to wear, but Dan convinced her there was no need. If she wanted to go shopping he’d drive her in and help her choose, but she didn’t have to. She didn’t need to do it so his family would like her, they’d like her anyway. Instead it was a morning of soft kisses on the couch to convince her but Em agreed to wear the red dress Dan liked so much. It had a shallow v neck, was knee length, and the fabric had a white floral pattern. Dan insisted it looked wonderful with the soft tan she’d picked up since they got into the country. Pairing it with black slip on sandals meant she’d be ok. She’d look fine.
Which led her to the freak out of how could she appear at Joe and Grace’s home to stay a few nights without bringing anything as a thank you? She couldn’t do that. So they stood in the Cole’s checkout queue for far too long on the 23rd as Dan watched her pick out her baking ingredients. By that evening there was a berry tart and a three layer chocolate cake packaged up in the fridge awaiting delivery with them. It was entirely stress baking, even Dan knew it. But he didn’t make any comments. Instead he sat on the kitchen counter and watched, stealing strawberries and taste testing her concoctions.
Christmas Eve morning arrived and Em wasn’t as nervous as she thought she’d be. The full day of Dan talking to her about how it was going to be alright and everyone was looking forward to see her had helped. There were still nerves, but she was going to spend a couple of nights with people who wanted her there, wear cute clothes, and she had host presents to give as a thanks for being invited. Really she couldn’t wait.
Plus Dan had made it his personal job to make sure that she was completely relaxed that moaning. It started with slow morning sex, Em waking up to kisses along her shoulder and wandering hands. After that a shower for the two of them and waffles with her leftover berries for breakfast really helped, Em fully relaxed. She double checked that the presents were all perfectly wrapped and packed to go, and after lunch she decided to finally start getting ready for heading over.
Dan was sitting on the side of the bed switching between watching her put makeup on and fiddling with his phone. She knew she wanted to look mostly natural but she put a red lip on to go with her dress. She was put together and ready to go. She could do this. It was going to be good. As soon as she opened her lipstick up Dan spoke.
“You know red’s a risky colour when you consider I’m definitely stealing kisses under the mistletoe.”
“The package says it’s kiss proof. You’ll be fine stealing a peck.”
“Ah my sweet, innocent Emmy. You thinkI’m gonna steal just one little peck?” He grinned and kissed her briefly but filthily, tongue slipping between her lips as Em kissed him back.
“That’s the last one, your entire family will be around.”
“And?”
“And that means your family and kids. So no.”
“We’ll find somewhere, you’re not gonna make me go a full day without a kiss.” He pursed his lips at her but Em ignored them, focusing on making sure her liner was perfect and her lipstick matched it.
“You know you’re ridiculous, right?” It was supposed to be a joke, but he got the look on his face that she knew meant he’d done something.
“Talking about ridiculous, actually-“
“Daniel what did you do?” He went to his side of the wardrobe, pulling out a red glittery box from behind some bedsheets.
“Before you say anything, I did nothing. It was all Santa. Not me.” He handed Em the box and she looked up at him carefully. They’d agreed that he wasn’t getting her a present this year because he’d paid for her flights to Austin and Perth. She never wanted him to ever think that she was friends with him because of his money. None of it mattered to her.
“Dan we said.”
“I know. But it was Santa. And he couldn’t give this to you in front of everyone so it had to be now.”
“What have you done?”
She opened the box he’d handed her carefully, lifting the lid and pulling back two layers of tissue paper to reveal the gifts. The main one was some of the most beautiful lingerie she’d ever seen in her life. It was sage green and lacy, the fabric soft against her finger. The corset wasn’t a proper one, not boned but she knew it’d look amazing. A pair of stockings at the bottom of the box made her realise how perfect it would be.
“It’s nothing. I just wanted—“
“Oh this is pretty. This is really, really pretty.” She lifted the underwear out to let the lace catch the light, admiring the design through it.
“You like it??” Dan sounded nervous.
“I really like it. I mean, I could wear it Boxing Day when we get b…what’s this?” As she moved tissue paper a smaller box she hadn’t realised was there hit off her fingers. Em picked it up and looked at the sleek silver lettering. For her pleasure. When she opened the box there was a light lavender vibrator in the black box. A charging cable was neatly beside it along with a dust bag.
“Look if you don’t wanna use it, it’s fine. If you want to pretend that you never saw it and throw it away, that’s completely fine. But we were talking and you said you’d never tried one, so I thought why not? It could be an option for you.”
Em’s cheeks were on fire as she realised that Dan was doing it for her. She’d barely made it through the awkward conversation when he’d asked her what she liked in bed. It was impossible to explain how bad her sex life had been before him. She’d never thought it was, but the way he acted when she said it was ok for him to not worry about her orgasms had soon taught her the opposite. She still remembered the way Gregory looked at her when she said she wasn’t enjoying their sex life. Now she knew he’d been with Millie that entire time when he insisted she was enjoying herself.
She forced herself out of her thoughts, staring at Dan. He looked worried and she forced a smile. His face relaxed when he realised she was ok.
“Will you use it with me?” She felt like her body was about to rip apart from shakes and nerves as she got the words out but Dan’s grin made it worth it.
“Absolutely. We can do it right now.”
“We have to go to your parents, so when we get back. And thank you. But Dan you didn’t have to. I don’t need presents, you paid for my flights. That was enough.”
“I mean I think it’s technically more for us than just you, so it’s fine. Right?” She grinned at him and leaned against his shoulder for a moment before getting up.
“Get dressed or you’ll be late.” Em started to fix her makeup as Dan looked at her.
“Can I watch you get dressed first?”
“No touching, but you can.”
“You’re killing me here, woman!” It hurt to not just sit in his lap and kiss him but they were already starting to be late. She couldn’t be late for a visit that involved staying over.
As a little nod to his request, Em slicked on a light pink lipstick instead of the red one she planned on wearing before putting on her red dress. The no touching rule was ignored the second she moved past Dan. Instead he squeezed her butt and kissed her neck before going to get changed. As promised he was casual, one of his party shirts, a pair of shorts, and Vans. Effortlessly handsome as normal and Em was jealous of how good his slightly longer curls and stubble looked.
If she was honest to herself all she wanted to do was take her dress off, get rid of the stupidly expensive shirt he was wearing and spend the day kissing him. Ask him to use the new toy sitting in the box. But they couldn’t. They needed to get going. When they were about to head out the door Dan decided to steal a kiss. It was supposed to be just one final one, but it turned into two. Then three. Then Em was pinned against the wall, hands running through Dan’s hair as his hands gripped her hips and waist. She pushed her lips to wherever she could reach, kissing up the bridge of his nose and along his cheeks.
Em would never admit it in a month of Sundays to him, but it was the right decision to not wear the red lipstick. Her whole face would be red. They needed to go. Get in the car and leave, but he was addictive. It was one of the things she adored about him and sometimes hated, how hard he was to leave behind. Every time they said it was the last one there was just one more.
She knew they wouldn’t be able to do this for another two days. The plan was to stay with Grace and Joe for Christmas Eve and Day, so they could be around all the family for the festivities before coming back on Boxing Day. Which meant no touching or kissing, and she couldn’t say no to the last make out session for 48 whole hours. She giggled at Dan’s expression as he moved away, Em using her thumb to clean the sheen of lipstick from his lip.
The one thing she didn’t expect was Dan grabbing her hand when they walked to his truck, and holding it again in between shifting gears while he was driving. It had never been a thing for them until they arrived in Perth. They’d been grocery shopping and picking up last minute presents in a crowded supermarket, everyone out to prepare for the season. Out of the blue there were fingers linking hers, Dan holding her hand while they walked through the aisles. His fingers interlaced with hers until they got to the checkout, and then went back as they walked back to the truck.
Grabbing someone’s hand for a moment in a crowded place was fine. Friends did that in busy places so they didn’t lose each other, especially when one of them was new to a place. You don’t lace your fingers with them. And Em couldn’t bring herself to let it go while she tried to ignore the size difference or how good it felt.
She really did try not to think about it, but it was impossible while his thumb rubbed lazy circles against her skin. He was soft and warm and his long fingers were one of her favourite things in the world. Sitting in the car then she could admit it to herself, she loved him. She loved the way he made her feel about herself almost as much as she loved him. And then the playlist flipped over and a grin spread across her face while she heard the opening fiddle strains of Our Song.
Em didn’t even need to say anything. All she did was look over as Dan was intently staring at the road with a grin on his face to know he did it deliberately. He’d learned pretty early on that a surefire way to cheer her up was to put Taylor on. Em could still never thank him enough for that night in Philadelphia when they’d gotten to see Our Song live without the band. It had been magical. Dan started to sing along with his exaggerated accent to make her giggle. There was nobody else for her, all she could focus on was being happy. The nerves, the worry faded away as she sung with hi, and collapsed into giggles when they finished. Em sang it looking over at him, watching how he grinned and shimmied in his seat as they drove the road back to the city instead of staying out at the countryside. All she wanted was to kiss him silly and start her Christmas Day sharing a bed with him. It’d still be worth it, but it was weird.
She may not have gotten a Christmas Eve kiss from her favourite member of the family, but Isaac wouldn’t let her go and kept kissing her cheek. He insisted on sitting next to her at dinner, Dan on Em’s other side. Dan casually ran his hand along her thigh under the table cloth as they all ate. She joked and laughed along with everyone, getting Isaac to eat his veggies thanks to the joy of stealing from Auntie Emmy’s plate and not even realising what was happening.
The best part about the meal was nobody judged her for her plate of food. Everyone else was eating the Feast of the Seven Fishes, plates piled with seafood that she didn’t particularly enjoy. Instead Grace had handed her a plain one, with pasta and sauce and cheese. She smiled when she got it, getting a “enjoy”.
There was no pressure on Em to try new things. The serving platters were spread on the table for people to take what they liked. If she wanted something and it looked good to her she could have it. If she liked it, great. If not Dan was happy to eat off her plate. Once they started talking and sharing drinks she couldn’t remember why she was so nervous. She knew the Ricciardo’s. She’d spent days with them, relaxing and watching Dan race. This was just another dinner like the ones they’d had before, except here they had a celebration as an excuse.
When dessert came around Grace brought out Em’s cake and tart, placing them in the centre of the table.
“Em made these, so I’m saving the pav for tomorrow. I hadn’t put it together and these are fresh!” Grace announced as she handed out bowls, Joe cutting into the cake first and showing the layers. It was congratulations and compliments towards Em, Isaac grinning as he ate his tart. It felt strange to get complimented for what she’d done by people. Usually she stayed quiet and in the background because she didn’t want to speak too loudly.
Even with the worry that someone would ask questions Em could feel herself relaxing beside Dan. He had his arm resting on the back of her chair, hugging around her shoulders like it was nothing. She wanted to move away but she couldn’t, Isaac on her lap before she lifted him and carried him into the living room for Christmas Eve presents. They settled in on the sofa, Isaac waking up a bit more and looking around.
Em wasn’t expecting anything. They’d welcomed her into their home, offered her somewhere to stay and it was more than she thought. But as stockings were handed out Joe offered one over to her.
“Everyone gets a stocking. We guessed on the pjs, apologies if they’re too big.” She smiled as she opened it, Isaac handed back to Michelle so Em could open it. Inside was new shorts pjs with red and black checkers, shampoo and conditioner, and a mixture of sweets. There was also a new notebook and a smooth writing pen. She couldn’t believe it. It was presents chosen specifically for her. The tiny little gold E in the bottom right corner of the notebook cover proved that for her. It was the middle of summer, she was in Australia for Christmas, and there was a group of people together who genuinely liked each other and somehow liked her. It didn’t feel real.
As midnight hit it was hugs and congratulations, everyone heading towards their rooms as they were shooed away with the promise that Santa was on his way so everyone had to go to bed. For the first time in far too long she didn’t have to suppress a shudder as someone who wasn’t Dan hugged her, smiling at Grace and Joe and returning the hug. Michelle and her husband got a one armed one that she gave willingly. It felt magical. And it wasn’t weird that the biggest hug was from Dan. She wouldn’t kiss him in front of everyone, but once everyone was going to bed he followed her into the guest room she was staying in.
“Two hands or the hug doesn’t count, right?” Em asked as he pulled her into a hug. His head leaned against hers and Em pushed her head into the spot where his neck and shoulder met. Alone she was able to run her hands along his warm back, pulling him close as Dan nodded and squeezed her waist. “That’s my huggy boy.”
As he hugged she didn’t want to let go, holding onto him in the privacy. Dan pushed kisses to the top of her head and her shoulder as much as he could. Em was just glad to have him there. He made things easier for her. She’d come with him and been so nervous but it was easy with him. Terrifying, but easy. She looked up at him and saw the smile, reaching up on her toes to kiss him.
The smile on Dan’s face as he realised what was going on and what she was doing would sustain Em forever. He was contagiously happy as they kissed, and Em was so close to telling him everything. But for the first time in years she was going to have a good Christmas and she couldn’t say no. She couldn’t ruin that on herself. So she held onto him as he kissed the top of her head and pretended everything was fine. She could do it.
“You need to go back,” Em whispered, afraid of breaking the spell between them.
“Can I stay here?”
“You need to go. What if your parents find out?”
“It’ll be fine. I’ll go back to my room early in the morning. Please?” She couldn’t resist him and he knew that.
“Fine.” It was one more kiss before she went to get her pjs on. They were curled up in bed and Em heard him barely whisper.
“Merry Christmas, Emmy.”
“Merry Christmas, Dimples. Thanks for inviting me tonight,” she murmured before pushing a kiss to his shoulder and cuddling in to sleep.
“Any time, Wrinkles. It’s gonna be the first of many.”

a snippet of my poly!chardando fic ft. charles and daniel making out
i've been working on this since october and it's still not done, but i'm almost at 3k (i’m very slow i know) so i thought i would post a little preview because i'm too excited tbh
the whole fic is essentially centered around a poly relationship between charles, daniel, lando and the reader, but this part only contains charles and daniel (chaniel? or lecciardo?) as they're just impatient little shits
so enjoy (hopefully) these almost 500 words of my lightweight brainrot (the heavy parts come later hehe) and don't hesitate to give me any feedback (my inbox is open for any thoughts and requests), it would be much appreciated, thank youu for reading!<33
...
“Na-uh,” he murmured and grabbed Charles by his waist, pulling him back and into his embrace. Charles was slightly taken aback by Daniel’s sudden actions, but not in a bad way. His heart skipped a beat at the closeness of his partner that he has been yearning so long for. Daniel’s left hand rested on Charles’ back firmly holding him against his chest, while his right hand snaked its way onto Charles’ neck, his thumb slowly stroking the Monegasque’s flushed cheek.
“You’re not going anywhere, I’ve missed you too much for that,” Daniel said in a hushed voice laced with need.
“I’ve missed you, too, Dan,” Charles replied slightly shyly and smiled, fondness visible in the way he looked at the Australian. He hooked his hands behind Daniel’s neck and run his fingers through the hair on the back of his head. When their lips finally met after weeks, Charles felt like his heart was going to explode and Daniel was buzzing with happiness. You watched them have their little moment, engulfed in their kiss, and pouted a little at the sight. You loved seeing your boys be so happy and in love. It would certainly be nice to join them, but instead you went to sit on the couch to give them some space; you’re going to have plenty of opportunities to shower them both in affection later. Daniel just happened to snatch Charles faster than you, which did not surprise you considering being fast was what he did for a living.
Even though you left to sit down, you were not immune to their smooching; the open kitchen was connected to the living room and you had a nice view of them from your spot. Charles moved his right hand from Daniel’s neck to his bicep, gently squeezing the muscle, which had him weak in the knees. Thankfully, Daniel was still supporting him with a hand around his waist, holding him as close as possible. His tongue traced Charles’ lower lip and then bit it and sucked on it a little bit, which made Charles moan. Their kiss became more heated and Daniel started to move slowly, pushing Charles’ back against the kitchen countertop. “Up,” Daniel huffed huskily and Charles obliged. With the help of his partner’s arm, he lifted himself on the countertop and parted his legs wide so Daniel could fit in. He leaned back into Daniel to kiss him again, gently caressing his cheeks. Daniel rubbed Charles’ bare thighs, since he was only in his boxers, slowly moving up to his waist and under his shirt, to explore all of that skin he’s been craving. Charles scooted closer to Daniel and hugged his torso with his legs, pressing his semi-hard cock to Danny’s stomach.

The most wonderful time of the year
Daniel’s story
christmas prompt: mistletoe (requests are open) summary: Y/n works has been working as a event organizer in Monaco for quite a while now and as always the most important event of the year was the Christmas Benefic Party that her organization always threw. tw: none just pure christmas fluff
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The amount of calls and e-mails y/n was receiving this first week of December really made her realize how little time did she have to finishing up with the Christmas Gala planning, her days were most definetly non-stop and she would be rushing around the office at all time. “y/n are you okay, do you need a break?” Marie asks, she was not only one of her collegues, but also one of her closest friends “You perfectly know that I cannot.” y/n sighs hearing her phone ringing yet again “I swear if I’ll get to the 14th alive , I’ll just thank the whole gods, universe and whatver is up there.” Marie giggles at those words before going back to work again. “I just have to go again, please can you just tell the others that I’m heading to talk to the catering, they forgot all the allergies buffet.” says y/n rolling her eyes before grabbing her long coat and scarf and greeting Marie with a smile.
The days before the party looked like they would never end, but eventually they did and it was the Gala day. Y/n spent all morning working and touchin up all the details and talking to clients who requied last minutes information, but in the early afternoon she managed to be free to go home and glammed up a bit before the hardest part of all this work: the party itself. The temptation to just throw herself on the bed and calling in sick was so present in her mind, but she reminded herself that she very much needed to eat, so she throws herself in the shower and try to relax a bit there. For the party she chose to wear a dark green suede dress that really looked amazing with her skin color, with matching gold and green earrings, she looked festive and elegant at the same time and she was happy with it.
Apparently even the guests were mesmerised by her presence as they started joining the party and complimenting the young lady. Part of y/n’s job was welcoming all the guest inside then proceed to that everything would go smoothly all night, it was tiring, but it was the last thing she’d do before her long winter break after this. “Good evening, welcome to the party. I’m y/n and if you need something feel free to let me know. Enjoy.” she feels like she has repeted it almost one thousand time already and not all the guests were there yet. “Hi, thank you.” a wide happy smile looking at her, it was a different one from the ones she had seen before, it looked… honest? That was not common at this kind of event “You’re welcome.” she finds herself blushing a bit responding to that, focusing on who she was talking to: none other than Daniel Ricciardo. Of course living in Monaco she has always been a fan of Formula 1 and of course she perfectly knew who the driver was, so she feels a bit flustered after that sweet greeting, but tries to focus once again and letting the professionalism kick back in.
Eventually the infinite list of more relevant guests arrived and she managed to enjoy a bit more the party, the food, the drinks, the music, everything looked okay and she breathing a sigh of relief at last. “May I have a Moscow Mule please?” she asks kindly to one of the bartenders, feeling some eyes on her. “Can I offer you that?” a happy grin looking at her “Thank you, it’s so generous of you to buy me a free drink.” she answers a bit incredule that Daniel was actually talking to her and not just to say hello. They both laugh at y/n’s sentence “I figured out you would need that after introducing yourself and the party to so many people” the guy looked stunning all suited up, it was unsual to see him dressed like that and y/n really noticed “It’s the better part of the job being at the party” she giggles back at him “I imagine the rest of it then.” he passes her the drink the bartender just prepared “Thank you” she almost whispers blushing at him before taking a sip. “So are you allowed to dance or do something fun?” she shakes her head in response “No, someone could see me and I’d most definetly get shouted at. Oh I’m sorry they’re calling me, thank you for the drink” she winks at him before heading towards the old couple of clients calling for her.
Those words really rang a bell in Daniel’s mind. He managed to talk to her and would not waste that occasion. Since he saw her at the entrance he was unable to concentrate on anything or anybody else, how could he has not noticed her before that moment? Daniel was a regular at these kind of events in Monaco even though nothing fun would ever happen, but this time it felt different to him. After a bit of mingling to try and get new sponsors for his driving team, he tries to look for y/n finding her when she has just finished to talk to someone “Y/n!” he calls for her, she smiles hearing his voice again and walks towards him being stopped a few times by other people on the way “It really feels you’re the star of this show” she laughs at those words “I wouldn’t define myself that, but thank you I guess. Can I help with something?” she asks politely “You said that the problem was being seen no?” y/n’s eyes widen at those words “Daniel, I’m flattered but-” “Oh my, I can’t believe my ears. Is Ms. y/n refusing to attend a guest?” he fakes being offended by it and she can’t help but feel a bit guilty remembering her place there and that either if was taking advantage of it or not she really had to make him happy “I’m sorry, you were saying?” she says looking at him trying not to roll her eyes so hard and smiling “I really wish to visit the wonderful rooftop of this building, is that possible?” Daniel’s look where really challenging her, mostly because she would feel very conflicted, she really wanted to go, but she couldn’t, but at the same time she had to. “Of course follow me.”. In that moment, climbing up the stairs to the rooftop, the only thing she can think about is the fact that she should have known that joking around with Ricciardo would lead to trouble, he wouldn’t stop giggling at them two sneaking out as if they were teenagers at prom. “Wow, it looks kinda amazing here.” he says as soon as his eyes lay on the amazing view in front of them “Is amazing, isn’t it?” she says feeling the sting of the cold hair on her rosy cheeks and the lights of the city brighten her face. “I guess you could give me just one dance here?” his hand leaning towards y/n, she almost feel completely defeated and hold his hand officially giving up “Do you always get what you want?” he shrugs his shoulder, starting to dance close to y/n to the muffled music coming from downstairs. It felt pretty unreal, being in Daniel Ricciardos’ arms dancing to christmas jazzy music on a rooftop in Monaco. He looks at her smiling and she feels something that really make her forget she was in full work mode and shouldn’t be doing this at all “It’s chilly isn’t it?” she comments trying to shift her mind away from her feelings “I’m sorry I didn’t even let you grab your coat.” he pulls her closer to him, erasing any distance that was present between their bodies. Y/n’s heart reaches her throath at that gesture and instinctively glance at him, catching his eyes looking at hers.
Magic is not long-lasting at all and the two of them are interrupted by y/n’s boss calling her on her phone “Oh no, I really put you in trouble.” Daniel tries so hard not to laugh “I knew you were trouble when you walked in. C’mon let’s go inside.” she giggles shaking her head before picking up her phone and finding excuses for not being where she sould be. Daniel spent the whole night following her with his gaze, with y/n sometimes noticing and exchanging some smiles with the aussie, that would some time teases her as well about some weird situations happening at the party.
The night went on much faster than anticpiated and as everyone started finally to leave, y/n finally felt relief after that very long period of stress. As she finished up saying to by to the last collegues that still were there, she looked around a bit disappointed at Daniel already leaving the party, but it was obvious, what was she thinking? It was fun while it lasted and unfortunately that was brief.
After taking her coat and get all covered up she leaves the building, seeing someone looking at her from the other side of the road, near a blue Mclaren. It couldn’t be, but it was. Daniel standing there trying to warm himself up and waiting for y/n to come out of the building. He waves at her trying to catch her attention, afraid that she would leave without noticing. “What are you still doing here?” she asks him, once reached him next to his very noticeable car “Well, we’ve been interrupted and I don’t really like that.” he smiles almost shyly at her “Yes, I don’t like that either. I am sorry.” she apologies “Would you like to see another special secret place?” “Can’t wait for the adventure”. They both giggle and Daniel begins to follow y/n entering back the building from the back. The building was one of those fancy mall that also had an event ballroom, but during the holidays also held a winter wonderland small village inside.
“Wow, it’s so different coming here where there’s nobody around.” Daniel’s eyes sparkling as if he just saw something magical “You know, being recognizable is not easy to come to places like this even if you’d want to.” he explains to her as they’re walking around the cute christmas scenarios “I figured this out, yes” she nods “Being always so busy organising the gala, I never enjoy the holidays as I did when I was younger.” it was so easy to open up to each other that they found theirselves sitting on a small bench under a fake tree filled with fairy lights talking for hours about their lives.
“I feel like you owe me a proper dance” says Daniel getting up “We don’t really have the music” “that’s not going to be a problem” in a matter of moments the australian man takes out his phone typing online – christmas romantic atmoshpere music – finding the perfect chilly slow music to dance on “Mademoiselle” he said offering his hand to her-ì. After getting rid of her coat, y/n takes his hand giggling before starting to dance close with him. They stay quite like this for a little while, swaying to the rhythm of that jazzy playlist that Daniel found, until he starts making them dance towards the left area of the room little by little.
“Oh no, look at this!” he says pointing at a small mistletoe attached to the ceiling of the room “It would be such a waste, wouldn’t it?” she answers to him following his small gesture and noticing the small adornment “Totally.” says Daniel before getting closer to y/n and slowly resting his lips over y/n's slightly red ones, closing his eyes and savouring the moment he had waited for since the first time he had danced with her on that rooftop.
“I think I liked this year’s party a lot more.”.

17. ‘I know you still love me.’ Part 4 – max Verstappen X Reader.
Finally here’s the next instalment of ‘I know you still love me’ ! Thank you so much for the support and the patience with me on this one! Part 5 is out now!
Tags: @enjoymyloves
This is shorter than my other parts but nonetheless... things are going down.. and Y/n has some things to sort out..
Previous parts - Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
Tumblr media
“You never answered my text.” Kelly. Her voice instantly went through you. It always did.
You didn’t know whether to laugh or cry as you looked at Max, he was stood there like a deer in headlights as he switched his vision between the two of you.
“Oh is that Y/n in there? So nice to finally meet you! I’m Kelly, I’ve heard so much about you!” Kelly has pushed herself past Max and greeted you with a hug. Your arms glued to your side mainly in shock as you tried to assess the situation as quickly as you could.
Max was adamant he didn’t cheat on you. Yet here she is now. In his hotel room, questioning why he hasn’t answered her. Do you stay calm? Should you start crying now or later? Are you still just overthinking this entire situation?
“What are you doing here?” Max said to Kelly through gritted teeth.
“Well I think I’ve got the answer to my text, its so nice to see you both back together! Max was in a state Y/n, you should’ve seen him!” Kelly laughed.
Both you and Max stayed quiet. You couldn’t work out what was going on and Max was quite clearly panicking. What did she text him?
“Well I’m sorry to bother you both, Y/n I’d love to get to know you properly, I’ll message you? I think I follow you on instagram?” You just nodded, not looking at her so you could keep your eyes on Max. Max’s glance didn’t leave Kellys as she walked past him and out of the door that he was still holding.
“Let me explain-“
“What did she text you?” You asked. Max was scrambling for words, you couldn’t bare to have him lie to your face once again.
“Y/n, please. Let me just-“ You pushed past him and ran down the corridor of the hotel towards the elevator, hoping one person would give you an honest answer for once.
“Kelly!” You shouted. You instantly felt crazy running after this beautiful woman whilst you were in Max’s baggy clothes.
Kelly turned to you but you hadn’t really thought this through. If you ask what she texted Max then you will sound crazy, but you know you’re not going to get a straight up answer from Max.
“Are you okay, Y/n?” She asked. You heard Max running up to the two of you before he just stood there waiting to hear what you were going to say. Memories of how good you and Max filled your brain before being overshadowed by the hurt he caused you, how broken he’s made you feel. Do you just trust Max and go back into the room with him or do you attempt to find out the truth?
“Did you sleep with him?” The words slipped from your mouth, not thinking it through but clearly your subconscious brain needs to know the answer.
“Are you sure you want to know that?” Kelly asked.
“Y/n, don’t do this, come back inside.” Max said, putting his hands on your shoulders from behind you in an attempt to get you to follow him. Your mind was racing, the walls of the corridor were getting smaller and you were getting hotter and hotter. You shoved Max off of you, not looking away from Kelly. Her face gave everything away.
“Y/n, I uh- we uh-“
“Shut the fuck up Kelly!” Max shouted, hitting the wall next him.
“Let her talk. Did you? Did you sleep with him?”
“Listen, I think there are certain things that would be better to hear them from Max.” Kelly began fumbling through her handbag as Max was pacing with his hands on his head. Both of them were panicking. You’ve clearly already got your answers.
“Here’s my number. Talk to Max, if you feel like he isn’t telling you the truth or isn’t telling you the whole story, call me.” She gave you a small piece of paper before getting into the elevator.
“FUCK YOU!” Max screamed as the elevator doors closed. You didn’t notice you were crying until Kelly had gone. You turned to face Max to see he was also in a fit of tears.
You’ve seen Max’s every emotion, but you wasn’t quite sure what this one was. The fact he was crying and screaming at Kelly, hitting walls was a good indication that you were wrong to believe him.
“Y/n, please, please, I’ll tell you everything, just please don’t leave me here.” You ignored him as you went back towards the room, it was a short way, not long enough to decide whether you should just grab your stuff and leave or actually stay and hear him out.
When you got to the door you’d realised you need to wait for Max regardless to open the door. Once he did you began picking up your things, you’ve given him too many chances. How could you be so stupid, you thought to yourself.
“Move Max.” He was stood in front of the door like an over emotional security guard, something you feel you’d laugh at but for now, you just felt numb.
“Not until we talk.”
“And are you really going to tell me the truth? Because to swear Max I’ll go to her and get it all. I can’t keep doing this with you. You ask me to trust you on another lie!” You were emotionally worn out, you were hoping all of the scenarios you’ve created in your head are much worse than what Max is going to attempt to tell you.
“I’ll tell you everything. Just please come and sit down.” Max softly grabbed your arm as he sat on the edge of the bed but you pulled away, not wanting to waste any more time here than you needed to.
“I’m fine standing.” Max sighed and nodded.
“I’m sorry Y/n. I am. You need to understand I really did think there was something going on with you and your boss, and I know, I know how stupid I sound. I know I should’ve just spoke to you. She was a shoulder to cry on which just.. got carried away and I regret it every day Y/n. I regret how much I’ve hurt you. I hate myself for doing this to you. For doing this to us. I wish it never happened-“
“Get on with it Max.” You spat. Not caring for his fake apologies or however he’s trying to justify what he’s done. That’s not what you need to know right now.
Max began telling you about what really happened during the period you were broken up, how he did sleep with Kelly that night, how it was her that had invited him and not the guys. He knew she’d be there unlike the version of events he told you. He told you how he thought of you. How he’d regret what he was doing, but he still done it anyway. You felt even more numb than you did before as you attempt to listen to him tell you what really happened, whilst you were sat at home thinking of him, crying over him, blaming yourself for this, he was fucking her.
“Why did you lie?” You whispered, not trusting your voice if you were to speak at a normal volume.
“I can’t lose you Y/n, I can't. I’m sorry, you’re everything to me Y/n, you know that? Please just tell me what I need to do to fix this, I'll do anything, fuck, I’ll even stop racing for you if it meant we can work through this somehow.”
“Why did you lie to me?” You asked again. Max was a rambling mess at this point, you kind of thought it made no sense. He cheated on you, he knows what he's done, he’s just sorry it’s all coming out now.
“I don’t want to hurt you Y/n, I never want to hurt you. What I said, what I told you had happened, that’s how I wish it happened. I know that means nothing, I know that sounds stupid, but I can’t bare this Y/n. I hate myself for what I've done to know, how much I've hurt you-”
“When did this start? When did you start seeing her?” You could hardly speak, you didn’t know if it was the shock or because of the tears that fell down. Max shook his head before looking up at you through his tear stained eyelashes.
“Please Y/n, I love you, only you. I can’t do this without you, you know I can’t. I’d take this all back if I could -“
“How long Max?” It was your turn to talk through gritted teeth. You felt yourself tense, almost bracing yourself for his answer.
“A few months.” Barely above a whisper Max admits.
You let out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding, not caring anymore about how much you were crying. You were hurt. Your heart has been ripped apart by the one person you’ve ever truly loved.
“All the time you accused me of cheating, and it was you all along? How could you do this to me? To ME? Of all people Max. I’ve been there for you, I’ve supported you when no one else would. I’ve listened to you when no one else would. I’ve been the one person to stand by you throughout everything. I mean look at me. Here I am giving you a second chance after you lied to my face! How could I be so stupid.” You slightly laughed at yourself.
“You know, everyone told me this would happen. That you’d do this to me. And do you know what I’d say? I’d say, ‘my Max would never do that. He wouldn’t treat me like that.’ Look how wrong I was with that one! You won Max. You broke me. You proved everyone right.” You grabbed your things and began to leave, not wanting to stand there looking at him anymore.
“Y/n, please-“
“Leave me alone Max! Don’t you think you’ve hurt me enough? Please, please leave me alone.” You walked out of the room, you leant against the wall as you sobbed into your hand, attempting not to make any noise in the corridor. You hope he gave you the entire truth. You had heard enough at this point. Even if there was more to know, he cheated on you and he lied to you. Nothing can be worse than that.
It felt like a long walk back to your apartment. Back to square one, let the heartbreak start again, you thought. You phone was crowded with messages and missed calls from Max. You quite simply turned it off and laid on your bed. You were somewhat excited to see Max again today. You were still hurting, still unsure whether to trust him or not. But he’s your love. You’ve practically dedicated your life to him. You don’t really have anyone here in Monaco.. should you just move back home? Your mind races with questions you feel you’ll never get the answer to. Why you? What did you do? Was it your fault? Did you really push him into her open arms? Your head ached from crying, you were sick of crying. When heartbroken you get to a point where your head stops caring, you want to stop thinking of them, you want to stop caring for them, longing for them. But your heart always knows what it wants.
You sat up, getting changed into your own clothes, instantly throwing Max’s into the small bin you had in your bedroom. Maybe taking something for your headache might be a good idea to help you get some sleep tonight. You were tired of being tired, you thought. You once again slightly laughed at yourself. How your life has come to this. You grabbed some tablets and some water from the kitchen, leaning against the counter whilst looking at the calendar hanging on the wall. You quickly took the tablets, washing it down with a gulp of water before slamming the cup down, you ran over to the calendar to make sure what you were seeing was correct. You turned the kitchen light on and took the calendar off the wall trying to work it all out in your head. You can’t be, you must have the date wrong. Fuck.
You were late. You rushed to the bathroom, slamming all the drawers and cupboard open, frantically trying to find a test that you know you have laying about somewhere.
Waiting for the result was the longest three minutes you’ve ever encountered. This will make everything even more complicated, you thought to yourself. Can you really go back to Max? Does he even deserve to be a part of a childs life? Can you ever trust him again? Can he really stay loyal? Oh fuck, please be negative. Your hands shook as you picked up the test, not wanting to look but also wanting to see immediately.
Two lines.. You were pregnant.
What the fuck do you do now..?

You quickly put on the shirt again and a pair of shorts and go knock on Lando's room. "Who is it?" He yelled at the door with a hint of annoyance. "It's y/n"
He got up hurriedly to put his shorts back on and opened the door. "Is there something wrong? I don't know if this is the best time for you to come in" he panicked as he peeked through the door. "Lando i- " before you finished your sentence you pressed your lips against his. He immediately pulled you in by the waist and closed the door. "Is this what you wanted to do?" He asked in confusion.
"the walls.." you sighed as you looked at him. "It's thinner than you think" you said before kissing him again. You guys headed to the bed and he sat you down onto his lap. You could already feel your pussy getting soaked as his cock poked at you. You kissed him sloppily before him stopping you. "You know how much you turned me on when we were in the car for fucks sake?" He cupped your face and put your forehead onto his.
"I'm sorry but I'm here to make it up to you right?" You smiled before going back to kissing.
"Let's lose the clothes sweetheart" he said as he got up. Your clothes pooled to the ground. "holy shit." He turned completely red. "Lie down." He spreaded your legs apart and looked at it in awe. "May I?" He asked you with a smirk. You quickly nod at him before he starts eating you out. He grabbed onto your thigh and grip on it. You couldn't help but become a moaning mess. Your toes curled at the feeling of him messing with your clit. You could feel yourself shaking.
"getting close sweetheart?"
"mm.." you moaned.
"I need a yes or no" he chuckled before going back to circling around your clit. "Yes" you whimpered before feeling your leg shake again and reach your climax. "You've done this before right y/n?" He asked as he cupped your face and rubbed his cock on to your pussy; His cock twitched eagerly as he waited for your answer. "Well..Only once" you pant. You could see the excitement light up on his face. He put forehead against yours "it's not too late to stop". You quickly shake your head making him let out a giggle. "Tell me if you want to stop" He lifted you and moved you to the middle of the bed. He looked at you as if he couldn't believe his eyes. His eyes were everywhere. "You're doing the thing" you giggled. He quickly turned as red as a Ferrari. "Are you sure you want to do this?" He said Changing the subject, bringing you back to reality. He was now lining up to your pussy making it throb. "Yes." You blurted
He grabbed your legs up and entered quickly after you responded: stretching you out. "Holy fuck!" He moaned while his hand dug into your thigh. You whimpered and moaned his name making him thrust into you even harder. "Lando- fuck- mm! Too fast!" You could barely get your words out of your mouth. "Shit. sorry" he said in between his pants. You moans got louder as he rammed into you harder and harder and harder. The knot in your stomach go tighter everytime he thrusted into you. "Could I cum in you?" He moaned as he got close. "Mhm!" You whimpered without a second thought. After a few se you felt him filling you up to the brim.
You both were panting afterreaching the climax. He collapsed next you and asked "what did we just do" and let out a little chuckle.
"we fucked. you, Lando Norris, the f1 driver fucked me , y/n ricciardo"
He started to laugh as he couldn't believe what he had just done. "Holy shit." He turned to you and ran his hands through your hair. "Daniel would actually kill us if he finds out"
"yep" you giggle
After a while of lying on the bed together, he got up to get clothes from the closet. He quickly came back and handed you one of his quadrant hoodie. "Come on let's get you cleaned up"
A/n: sorry it's so short :`)

SUMMARY: you don't like a gold rush, but you're attracted to someone everyone admires. when he stares at you with eyes like sinking ships on waters so inviting, will you jump in or not?
WARNINGS: cursing/swearing, people not giving a single fuck about the 3-month rule, mention of a hand injury, and allusions to a past unhealthy relationship. as i said, this can be read as a one-shot but there are references in this about the previous part of the series. so… you might want to read that. let me know if i missed any warnings. [⚠︎︎RATING: 16+]
AUTHOR’S NOTE: inspired by taylor swift’s song with the same title. also, based on my research, driver rooms are either located in a team motorhome or a floor in the driver’s garage. i literally watched paddock tours, garage tours, driver’s room tours BUT i still cannot find where in the japanese gp are the driver rooms located. so in this fic the driver’s room is a part of the garage, i imagined it on the 2nd floor. if you are reading the series i suggest rereading the last part because i changed some important details there like the timeline and stuff. again, huge thanks to my bestie @writingstoraes for helping me with the social media parts included here.

All you did was accept his follow request on Instagram.
Then happened the small talks, the exchanging of numbers, the constant messages, and the little secret meetups.
And now here you were, meeting with his family as he introduced you to them.
What Max couldn’t do in almost 2 years, Daniel did in 2 months.
You remembered the date you accepted his follow request, July 19th. Only a few days before he would drive for AlphaTauri after Nyck de Vries got sacked. He then spent most of his summer break getting to know you. And when he sustained a break to a metacarpal on his left hand during the free practice 2 session at the Dutch Grand Prix, you stayed with him and it brought you even closer.
Today was September 19th. Exactly 2 months after you accepted his follow request and 2 days after the race in Singapore ended—the race where he returned after his injury. You were having dinner with his family. His mother told you stories about Daniel’s childhood. He was embarrassed at some of them, but you assured him that you thought the stories were cute. You smiled all throughout the meal. This was a new experience for you, getting introduced to someone’s family and getting treated like you were already one of their own.
You were used to being hidden. Things never used to be like this. For the longest time, it was always secret glances, touching behind closed doors, and kissing behind closed curtains. It was never talking, laughing, and getting along with his family.
He joined you when you took the initiative to wash the dishes. His mother didn’t want you to, but you insisted because it was all you could do in return for their warm welcome.
You worked as a team. You washed the plates with the dishwashing soap while Daniel rinsed them with water, silence never surrounding you for even a moment because he had so many stories to tell and you loved hearing every single one of them.
You weren’t even in a relationship yet. Sure, you went on a few dates, but there was still no label put on it. There were no kisses, no making out—just the occasional holding hands and Daniel never complained. He understood that you still weren’t prepared for another relationship and he was ready to wait.
“It’s late. We should probably rest,” he spoke up after you both washed your hands and dried them using a paper towel. You followed him into his childhood room.
“You take the bed, I’ll sleep on the floor,” he said.
“You don’t need to do that. This is your room.”
“No, please. I insist,” he smiled.
You took the bed, immediately smelling his scent on the sheets. From the paint to the posters and the pillows, everything about this room screamed Daniel Ricciardo and it gave you so much comfort.
But even with all the comfort his bed provided, you still couldn’t sleep. “Daniel?” you called his name.
“Hmm?” he replied, he couldn’t sleep as well.
“What were you thinking that day?” you asked quietly.
“What day?”
“When you requested to follow me on Instagram. You knew I was dating Max, right?”
“You already broke up that night.”
“Well, yeah. But you didn’t know that.”
“I actually did. Max told me when he was drunk and crying. I don’t think he remembers telling me, though.”
“Why did you want to follow me?”
“I was curious, I guess. I wanted to see who made Max cry. He’s one of my closest friends so I wanted to know who was this girl he was crying about. Your account was private but I was really curious about you, so I requested to follow you and…”
“And?” you urged him to continue.
“And I loved what I saw. You’re really beautiful.”
You blushed, covering your face with your hands even though he couldn’t see them anyway. You changed the topic. “You said Max was crying?”
“Yeah. But then he also drunkenly told me the reason why. And for what it’s worth, I’m on your side. You did the right thing. You deserve someone better.”
No one spoke for a moment. Your mind suddenly lingered on Max. He would never cry in public, not even in front of a friend. You knew that if he was sober, he would’ve never cried in front of Daniel. Max always said that he was raised to not show any sign of weakness to anyone, and he thought that crying was one of them. You were the only exception. With you, he wasn’t afraid of crying. Hell, he had broken down in front of you countless times and you were always there for him. And he loved that you were always there for him.
You pushed any further thought of him away from your head. He wasn’t yours anymore. You shouldn’t think about him. He wasn’t the one lying on the floor next to the bed you laid on now, it was Daniel.
“Dan?” you softly called his name.
He smiled at the new nickname. “Yeah?”
“Can you sleep next to me?”
“Are you sure?” he asked. From the way his voice sounded, you knew he was smiling.
“Please?” you said, moving yourself to make a space for him on the bed.
He immediately stood up to lie beside you. None of you felt any awkwardness, it was almost like it was always meant to be like this—you and him, beside each other.
You stared at the ceiling, not really feeling any sleepiness. How could you? When there were about a thousand thoughts circling themselves in your head?
Thoughts about your future, about Daniel, and about Max. You were just thankful you were privileged to be born into a family that owns a successful company in Monaco. And although you stayed in Menton, you still worked for your family business. At least, if the public discovered your possible future relationship with Daniel, you knew they couldn’t call you a gold digger because you already have plenty of gold just by yourself. That was one less thing to worry about.
Daniel couldn’t sleep either, knowing that you were still awake. He looked at you, following your line of vision until he stared at the ceiling as well.
“What’s on your mind?” he asked.
“A lot,” you chuckled.
“Do you want to talk about them?”
“No,” you shook your head. “At least not yet.”
“That’s okay. You wanna talk about something else?”
You thought for a moment before a sudden question entered your mind. “What’s your favorite memory that happened here in your room?”
“Well, I had my first make-out session here,” he laughed.
You playfully hit his shoulder. “Really?” you laughed. “That’s your favorite memory?”
“Why? Are you jealous because it wasn’t you?” he teased.
“I-”
“Just kidding,” he laughed again. “My favorite memory in this room was when my dad and I sat on this bed and had a deep talk about life. I still l remember every piece of advice he told me that day and I try my best to follow them.”
“Care to tell me one advice?” you said. “Who knows, maybe it’ll help me out at some point.”
“There was one he told me that really stuck to me the most,” he responded.
“What is it about?”
“About love.”
You glanced at him before looking back up again at the ceiling. “Tell me.”
“Give love time to flourish, but never time what flourishes the love.”
You let the words sink in. You turned to your side so you could face him, urging him to elaborate.
“You can fall in love with someone years after meeting them, at the same time, you can fall in love with someone after hours of meeting them. The length doesn’t matter if the trust is strong and the love is already stronger.
“You can get engaged after being with someone for 6 years, at the same time, you can get engaged after being with someone for 6 months.
“Time matters, yes. But the length is subjective. Love is not supposed to be a competition where time is the sole judge. Sometimes, longer doesn’t mean healthier, and shorter doesn’t make it insincere or artificial.”
He turned to his side so he could face you as well. You didn’t know what to reply and he didn’t expect you to. You just stared at each other’s eyes.
You had never paid attention to his eyes more than what you were doing now.
They were gleaming.
Twinkling.
Those eyes…
They were like sinking ships on waters so inviting.
You almost jumped in.
You cleared your throat, pulling away from his face that was just an inch away from yours. Funny, you didn’t even notice your faces were moving closer to each other.
“W-we should-uhh n-not,” you suggested.
“Y-yeah, we should not,” he agreed, smiling sheepishly.
The next race was not far ahead. You actually thought that after the race in Singapore, he would fly straight to Japan to get ready for the next grand prix. Instead, he took 3 days off just to set up a dinner with you and his family.
You didn’t know why he did it, because if you were him, you wouldn’t want to stress yourself this much just for you to meet his family. You weren’t demanding anything right now. If Max made you wait for almost 2 years, you could wait a couple more months for Daniel. After all, waiting was your game—and an expert at that.
It wasn’t a coincidence that Daniel introduced you to his family exactly 2 months after your first interaction. He knew about the waiting game Max made you play for almost 2 years. The number ‘2’ always being the highlight. So, he did what Max couldn’t do in just 2 months. He wanted to prove something. And from the look on your face the moment his parents hugged you, he knew his little plan worked.
It also wasn’t a coincidence that out of all the advice his father gave him, what he told you was the one about love and time being subjective. It was his sly way of saying that it didn’t matter how long you two have known each other. He was basically saying that Max may have had you longer but you should pick him. He had feelings for you, he wanted you to see that, and hopefully, return them.
Tomorrow, he needed to travel. Reality would return again, and the track needed him. As much as he wanted to spend more time with you, his car won’t drive itself. He had a thought.
“Do you want to go with me?” he asked suddenly. “To Suzuka.”
There was something in you that screamed to go back to your Menton apartment. Were you ready to go to a Grand Prix supporting a different driver than who you were used to supporting?
This was a second chance at everything, though. A chance to move on and a chance to have something new and someone new to look forward to.
“Okay,” you finally answered. “I’ll just have to do some work online for our family business. But as soon as I’m done, I’ll be in the stands cheering for you.”
He looked at you like you said some forbidden language. “The stands?” he asked you.
“Yeah, like with the other fans,” you shrugged.
“You know you’re not like the other fans, right? You can watch in the garage. If you’re not comfortable with other people seeing you, you can stay in my driver’s room and watch there. I’m sure there’s a monitor there.”
Again, this was a new experience for you. You didn’t know what to say.
“It would make me really happy knowing you’re in my room rather than in the stands. I could also show you the car and some stuff,” he continued.
Max never even invited you to walk the pitlane with him. And now here was Daniel, all ready and prepared to tour the entire paddock with you if you asked him to.
“That would be great,” you smiled.
“We better rest then, we have to travel tomorrow.”

JAPAN. SEPTEMBER 24, 2023.
The race was happening today.
For the last few days since you got here, you chose to stay at a hotel near where the circuit was. Daniel was staying at the same hotel just 2 floors above yours. He invited you to stay in his room but you refused because it would raise a lot of suspicion. You were still figuring out what you had with Daniel and staying in the same room as him would paint a picture that you were already in a relationship. You knew just how F1 fans could become detectives if they wanted to. They already knew your name when Daniel decided to follow you on Instagram. A lot of them tried to follow you, but you chose not to accept their follow requests.
You stayed in your hotel room on Friday and Saturday, watching the practice sessions and the qualifying in your room. You didn’t really have a choice, you had online work to do. You watched while you worked.
But not today.
Today, you were free. Today, you’d watch the Grand Prix in person.
Daniel visited you quite often in your room. He took advantage of you being in the same hotel as him. He always tried to convince you to get out, but you always said that you were busy finishing some work in advance so you could attend the Grand Prix with no worries about work. He stayed beside you while you worked until his duties called him and he needed to get to work as well.
But not today.
Today, he didn’t have to convince you anymore because you wouldn’t stay in your room. Today, you’d join him.
The plan was to walk behind him through the paddock with an AlphaTauri staff until you reached his garage where he would tour you and get you to meet the people working there. After that, he would lead you to his driver’s room where you would stay.
If it was entirely up to him, he wanted you to walk beside him instead of behind. But you refused again, because you knew walking beside him would launch something that you weren’t sure of yet.
You didn’t understand yourself. You broke up with Max because he kept you hidden. And now that you were with someone who wanted to show you off to the world, you’d rather stay hidden. You told yourself it was just because you and Daniel did not have a label in your relationship yet. You convinced him it was just because you were still figuring everything out.
And those reasons were reasonable and true.
But you missed one little fact.
There was something about being hidden that excited you.
Maybe being Max’s secret for a long time had convinced you that being hidden was an exciting thrill.
A knock on your door interrupted your thoughts. You finished fixing your hair immediately to open it. On the other side was a staff from AlphaTauri you had gotten close to for the past couple of days. You followed her downstairs where you met up with Daniel.
As soon as Daniel entered the paddock, all eyes were on him. The cameras turned and snapped pictures, your white cap barely hiding your face so you looked down and focused on the road most of the time. You should’ve brought sunglasses.
You heard people calling his name. Photographers, fans, people from the other teams—everyone. He displayed a huge smile on his face that everyone returned as soon as they got a sight of him. He waved at everyone, because let’s be honest, everyone knew him.
You saw everything as you walked behind him.
You saw how everyone admired him.
How everyone glorified everything he did.
Not everyone knew him personally, but everyone felt close to him. That was how admirable Daniel Ricciardo was. He leaves a mark on everyone. A mark so indelible and so perfect that no one could ever forget. No one would dare to forget.
It started to make you insecure.
It ached to even think of how perfect he was, of how peaceful he was. Like sunshine, he was a need for everyone. He presented a light that everyone would kill for just to have a taste of.
It started to make you jealous.
It was like he floated as he walked because everyone cheered on him. Like a rush of gold, he was a desire—a temptation.
And you didn’t like a gold rush.
You didn’t like anticipating your face in a red flush.
You didn’t like that anyone would die to feel his touch.
Everybody wanted him.
Halfway through your destination, the AlphaTauri staff you were walking with behind Daniel suddenly realized she left something important in her room. She had to go back to the hotel, leaving you no choice but to stand and walk beside Daniel.
And he loved it. He glanced at you every now and then, smiling and checking if you were alright. He brought his camera with him, he took some pictures of the surroundings while he walked. You didn’t know that most of those pictures were you looking around the place. You’ve been to multiple F1 races in your life, but this was your first time in a Grand Prix in Japan.
You entered the pitlane with him. And once again, photographers snapped pictures of him. You slowed down a bit, letting Daniel be on the front again and the only focus of the cameras. He instantly noticed the lack of your presence beside him, looking at you and smiling, telling you it was alright and that you could walk beside him again. You eyed the cameras, observing that their focus was not on Daniel anymore as another driver was walking towards your way. So, you went back beside him, smiling softly at him. He placed a hand on your back guiding you through the large amount of people coming and leaving the pitlane.
For a slight moment, you wondered how someone so perfect would want to be with someone so imperfect. How could someone as desired as gold would want to love someone who was the complete opposite?
You were nearing his garage, but before you could reach it, a pair of familiar eyes caught yours. You swore you felt your heart jump and the world stop for a second but you shook it off.
As it turned out, the other driver that was walking towards your way was none other than Max Verstappen.
He froze for a second but he looked away from you. He continued walking, pretending that nothing ever happened but you noticed that his jaw was clenched when he walked past you.
When you reached Daniel’s garage, he introduced you to his race engineer and mechanics. You exchanged greetings. Yuki Tsunoda joined the conversation as well when he took notice of the new addition that Daniel brought.
“So, what are you two?” Yuki asked. The other people in the garage were listening intently, curious as to what the answer was.
“Umm, we’re not really sure yet,” you answered honestly. “We’re still figuring it out.”
You looked at Daniel and he grinned, agreeing with your answer. Most of them shrugged at your response but they couldn’t hide the smirks they were showing when they each looked at Daniel.
Daniel led the way to his driver’s room, making sure you were settled in there before he eventually had to leave to do some things he needed to do.
You heard the sound of your phone notifying you that someone sent you a message. You checked it.
Tumblr media
You rolled your eyes as you stared at your phone, slightly cursing at yourself because you swore not to reply to any of his texts anymore. His last texts were from the night he tried to convince you to stay with him—the last time you talked to him in person. You didn’t even notice yourself typing a reply until you already sent it.
You knew nothing would stop Max from doing what he wanted to do. What Max Verstappen wants, Max Verstappen gets.
You just placed your phone in your pocket and hoped that whatever kind of talk they would have would not affect the race later.
The race would start at 1:00 p.m., and even at 9:17 a.m., you could already feel how busy everyone was. Daniel entered the room, immediately sitting next to you on the couch and hugging you close. He rested his head on your lap and you played with his hair, twirling his already curly hair with your fingers. You stayed like that for a while, you were sure Daniel had already fallen asleep. You chuckled, pulling your phone from your pocket and snapping a cute picture of him.
You weren’t sure how many minutes had passed. You tried taking a nap but your excitement for today was too much for even a minute of sleep to consume you. So, you just stared at Daniel and resumed playing with his hair with one hand, while the other scrolled through Twitter on your phone.
Tumblr media
And there it was. The speculations were already starting. You had no idea how they even knew it was you from just a side view of your body.
But for the first time, you didn’t care.
You scrolled even more, reading almost every comment about the picture of you and Daniel.
Every comment and reply you saw was positive, not even one negative comment about him. People loved him and you understood them. What’s there not to love about him?
Even you were not an exception. You cared for him. You were attracted to someone everyone admired.
Everybody wondered what it would be like to love him.
And you wondered the same.
Daniel’s phone that was atop the coffee table made a noise, informing him that someone had texted. He was still lying on the couch with his head on your lap when he got woken up by the notification and took his phone from the table. He immediately sat up when he saw who it was.
You sneaked a glance and saw that it was Max.
They were texting back and forth and since Daniel’s phone was not on silent, you heard every tap he made on his keyboard. He was typing roughly, his phone shaking just by the force of his typing. His jaw was clenched and his eyebrows were knitted.
He was angry.
And you knew why. You wanted the couch you were sitting on right now to eat you alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minutes later, someone knocked on the door, saying something about a meeting he needed to present for. You knew he wasn’t talking to Max anymore because he had stopped typing. But still, he stared at the phone with so much hatred.
You had never seen Daniel this angry before. You couldn’t help but ask Max what he said.
Tumblr media
But of course, Max told you nothing.
Daniel stood up suddenly, his stance telling you he was still pissed off. But before he could fully leave the room, he looked at you as if he was asking for your permission if he could leave. You nodded in response, smiling to assure him that you were going to be fine.
You didn’t dare to know how their conversation went anymore.
Tumblr media
“It’s lights out and away we go!” you heard Crofty announce. And as soon as he said it, 20 sensational drivers in their cars fought for positions.
You actually left Daniel's room before the race started, deciding to watch from the back of the main garage with the other AlphaTauri guests. You didn’t need to hide anyway because people already knew you. And besides, the cameras were focused on the race.
53 laps later, Daniel finished P9 which was astonishing given that he was driving an AlphaTauri. Because let’s be honest, the team and their cars aren't exactly built to win a championship.
You knew he had media duties to do after the race so you didn’t expect him to go back immediately. You returned to his room, watching the post-race interviews while waiting for him. You immediately focused on the screen as soon as it was his turn.
“P9, huh? What an astonishing drive,” a Sky reporter praised him.
“Well, yeah,” he chuckled. “Thank you. I had a lot more motivation today and I made sure to project it on track.”
You blushed.
The reporter asked him questions about the pace, what he felt about the race and the usual stuff. All of them he answered with a smile on his face. Even in his sweaty conditions, he looked gorgeous.
What must it be like to grow up that beautiful?
His hair was falling into place like dominoes.
And once again you questioned just how on earth this man was a real person.
Tumblr media
Back in the hotel, with your phone in your pocket, you were helping Daniel pack his suitcases in his room after you already packed yours.
He was taking a much-needed shower while you insisted on packing his belongings for him. God knew how tired he was after the race and you had a lot of free time on your hands. Even if he didn’t want you to do it for him, you still did it.
Daniel came out of the bathroom already dressed and immediately proceeded to help you pack. “Have you seen my headphones?” he asked.
“No, and I haven’t packed it yet,” you answered. “Where did you last remember using it?”
“I think it’s in your room.”
“Okay, I’ll check it,” you got ready to leave before he stopped you.
“You want me to come with you?” he asked.
“No, but thanks,” you smiled. “Just continue packing so we’ll finish faster.”
Moments later, you discovered that his headphones were indeed in your room. You quickly retrieved it and made your way back to his.
As you were about to open Daniel’s door, the room beside him opened and someone entered the hallway. You made the mistake of looking at the person because it was Max. You made eye contact for the second time that day and he seemed stuck on the floor.
He frowned, eyeing you and the room you were about to enter. You saw his confusion turn into realization when he remembered who the person staying in that room was. And then, he scoffed. He walked past you again, brushing his shoulder with yours as he went straight to the elevator.
You sighed, opening the door and seeing how Daniel already finished packing most of his belongings.
“I found it,” you said, handing him the headphones. He stood up from his position, getting the item from your hand before tossing it on the bed and caging you with his arms.
“My God, what would I do without you?” he said, rocking you back and forth as he hugged you.
You looked up to meet his eyes. “I don’t know, probably lose half of your things,” you laughed as he released you from his arms. “Now, where were we?” you asked, looking over all the suitcases on the floor.
“I finished most of it, I’m sure it’ll take me only 5 minutes to finish the rest.”
“Okay, you do that. I’ll check the other bags if you’ve forgotten something again.”
Daniel did in fact finish the rest in only 5 minutes. He stood up, stretching his body after the crouching he had to do while he was packing.
You couldn’t help but look at him. He was wearing a simple white t-shirt and his back was facing you. You saw how the muscles on his arms and back flexed while he stretched.
Suddenly, everything was in slow motion.
You didn't like slow motion double vision in rose blush.
You didn’t like that falling felt like flying 'til the bone crush.
Everybody wanted him.
And you didn’t like that you didn’t wonder the same anymore.
Because unlike them, you didn’t need to wonder. You already loved him.
You didn’t like a gold rush.
But for him, you would.
You stood up, walking towards him until you were in front of him. He faced you, confused as to what you had to say.
But you didn’t say anything.
Instead, you placed your hands on his cheeks and you caressed them gently.
His eyes started doing the same thing they did back when you spent the night in his childhood room and your heart started beating faster than ever.
They were gleaming.
Twinkling.
Those eyes…
They were like sinking ships on waters so inviting.
So, you jumped in.
You pulled his face close to you, closing the distance with a passionate kiss. He was shocked at first, not because he didn’t want it but because he didn’t expect it. He was ready for you anytime, he was just waiting for the time you would tell him that you felt the same.
And instead of telling him, you showed him.
With a kiss, you made him feel.
Daniel reciprocated the kiss and held you closer.
From that moment on, he won.
Or at least he thought he did.
We all know Max Verstappen was a fierce competitor.
He kissed your forehead when he pulled away. Then, he placed a soft peck on both sides of your cheeks before pressing his hands softly on them. You looked at him lovingly.
Your phone in your pocket buzzed from someone messaging you but you were too busy admiring Daniel that you didn’t even pay attention to it.
Tumblr media
Only time would tell how those two sets of three little words would affect you.

After the most beautiful weeks, they had to come back to reality. Tes was back in Monaco and Daniel was in Imola racing. The album was finished and the only thing that was left to do was release it, and that was the little problem, she had no fucking clue when that was going to happen. One thing she knew was that one of the many interviews she did while she was in Los Angeles was ready to be seen by the world. Daniel was with her when she got the call saying that the interview was finished and he was over the moon with it and the only thing Tes asked him was “Please don't make me watch it with you. I feel extremely stupid and embarrassed seeing myself talking to a camera.” and he promised to see it alone.
Tes always felt a little nervous while Dan raced, it was impossible for her not to but being in the garage calmed her a little. Maybe the thing that calmed her was not being in the garage, but being closer to him was. It could sound strange but a part of her felt rare when Daniel was not around, it was not emotional dependence, it was like a part of her personality only appeared when Daniel was around. That part of herself always felt calm, safe and at peace, had a childish behaviour where everything was giggles and smiles and that personality only came to surface when she was with him.
While sitting on her couch with the boys and Nyx curled in her legs she felt that uneasiness on her body and those few drops of water falling on the track didn’t help at all. She had a blind trust in him and in his driving skills, that was not the problem. Watching the orange car go out the track and crash into the wall made her hands clenched into the cushions and after realising it wasn’t Daniel in the car she let go a deep breath, she still felt worry about Lando but in the end he was okay. With the sprint race he was happy from where he was starting and if he was happy, so was she.
The race started and Tes had to watch how Dan crashed into Carlos, it was a minimal crash, if that could be called a crash, but to her it was hard to see. It made her uneasiness fly over the moon. And from there everything was a mess. There were no words to describe it, simple as that.
Tumblr media
Tes was in the kitchen preparing dinner. Multiple times he offered his help but she declined every single time saying she wanted to do it alone to get things out of her mind. She wasn’t the best at cooking and sometimes she hated cooking but when she didn’t know what to do, cooking was the best option and Daniel was on the couch with his phone in his hands, earbuds on ready to watch her interview.
The image was in black and white. -Hello world.- Tes burst into laughter. -God that sounded like Ello world- She laughed again. -A couple of seconds in and he was already laughing. -Okay, let’s get down to business- She clapped and then turned into colour. -Hello, I’m Tes and I’m going to answer some questions. Let’s begin shall we?- Daniel could see how, despite her cool exterior, she ran her hand up and down her leg, a clear sign that she was nervous. -“What is Tes' real name?” Okay, an easy one. I’m not going to reveal it but those closest to me call me Tes, Babes, Rose- Someone from the background screamed “Gorgeous”- Daniel recognized Xander’s voice even when it was in the background. -Yes, gorgeous too. That one is my favourite actually.- She said looking down, trying to hide her blush cheeks.- Daniel smiled brightly and found it extremely cute. He wasn’t sure if she was going to name his nickname for her, but acknowledging it and letting them leave it on made him happy.
-“What Tes is recognized for?” My music, I hope and if it’s not for that, you should check it out. It’s pretty cool I swear. “What Tes zodiac sign is?” I’m not really into that stuff but I think, I think I'm Sagittarius.- They asked her questions about her hair and more stuff like that, with every answer she was giving Daniel could realise how she was letting go little by little.
-“Is Tes and Miley girlfriends?” Okay, that’s badly written but it’s a funny question I will give you that. But let’s call Miley and she will answer it for me.- A hand came to view and gave her her phone. She put the phone on speaker and waited for Miley to answer. “Babes” “Hi my darling, I’m here doing an interview and they are asking me if we are a couple” “Hahaha what? Like romantically?” “Yep” “I actually tried to shut my shoot, but she is taken so it's not gonna happen any time soon.” Laughs could be heard in the background.- Daniel laughed at how quickly Tes turned red but the most beautiful smile appeared on her face.- The phone call ended and she was laughing. -You hear it here first, Miley and Tes are not a couple sorry for disappointing all of you. “Is Tes dating someone?” Yes, she is and he is a king.- Tes said with a big smile on her face.- Daniel smiled from ear to ear. He lifted his head and watched her making a mess of his kitchen and looking so fucking beautiful in the meantime, as if she could felt his eyes son her she looked at him and blew a kiss at him, and he did the same in return.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Okay, shoot the next question. “Where Tes is from?” USA, born and raised. “Where Tes live?” At the moment Monaco, a very beautiful place. “When Tes was born?” December 3, 1994 “Who are Xander and Alex?”- She looked at the camera, or more like behind the camera and she laughed making people laugh. -Okay, this is more like a question for them than for me. So people come here.- She gestured with her hand and Xander and Alex appeared beside her. -These are my best friends. The blonde one Xander, he produces all my music. The brunette one Alex, he took all my photos. We met when we were little, being friends since day one. They are my family, I will give them my kidneys but no way in hell I will share food or my charger with them.- They laughed.- Next question, “How tall Tes is?”- She looked up to the camera and pursed her lips. -Okay, that’s mean. I'm five feet one. Thank you very much. I'm not small, I hang out with people that are very tall.- Daniel laughed and shook her head. She was small and she knew it but he knew very well that she would deny it every single time.
-“Does tes have a child?” Yes, I recently had a child.-She said smiling. -Her name is Nyx and she is a beautiful black cat, I post photos of her all the time. “Does Tes write her own songs?” Yep.- She nodded. -Always have and always will. “Does Tes train?”- She scoffed. -Sadly I do.- She pout. -Xander makes me and I made a new friend that's a personal trainer and he makes me train too.- She lent closer to the camera and whispered. -I found out late that he was a personal trainer, otherwise I would not have made friends with him but now it's too late to escape.- Daniel laughed and made a mental note to tell Mike that when he saw him. -“Does Tes know how to drive?” Haha debatable.- Daniel knew very well that that laugh was a sour one. -I hang out with people that know how to drive very well so now I don’t have to drive anymore.- Daniel shook his head laughing. In all the months they’ve been together Tes has driven a lot more, each time more than the last. It was like baby steps, but she was enjoying driving again. Always with him by her side and according to her it was because it inflates her ego to have a f1 driver in her passenger side and that she was a sucker for a cute face. -Work smarter, not harder.- She said tapping her temple. “Does Tes play board games?” Yes, I do. I’m not competitive unless we are playing Scrabble, in that case I leave everyone weeping.- Daniel laughed recalling the time she beat his ass left and right while playing it. -And I’m not a sore loser. Recently I played a lot of kid board games, because we’ve been doing babysitting duties, which I loved, and put together a full car with legos. I think we had more fun than the kids.- She had the biggest smile on her lips.- Daniel had the same smile on his lips, both of them recall those weeks with his niece and nephew in his farm having the best weeks in a long time.
-“Does Tes sing in the shower?”- She frowned and tilted her head to the side. -What?- She laughed. -This is really a question people ask about me? It’s really strange and concerning.- Laughed could be heard in the background. -Either way,  I don’t sing, I scream.- She said without thinking and seconds later she lifted her head with her eyes open big. -Did you really just say that?- Alex’ voice could be heard and she started laughing nervously, her whole face turning red. -Please, the fans would like you to explain what you meant.- Xander teased her and she shook her head laughing. -Nope, it's not gonna happen. Next question.- Daniel paused the video to laugh at the situation and how quickly she blushed, it was so sweet. -She took a deep breath trying to calm her laugh and cleaned a tear in her eye. -God, this is not going how I expected. I’m rusty in these things, I apologise.- The people there laughed and tell her not to worry.
-Next question people want to know is, “Who are Tes parents?”- She stayed quiet looking at the card in her hands. No one said anything. The funny moment is long forgotten.- Daniel bit his lips, even though that happened many weeks ago, he almost stopped the video and ran to hug her. The look in her face on the video broke his heart. He knew that there were two options with her parents' subject, she would joke about it or she would have a hard time putting in words her feelings and not cry in the process. He waited expectantly for her answer. -She let go of a deep breath and pressed her lips together. -Emmm, my parents are my luckies stars.- She smiled not looking at the camera, playing with her hands. -My dad was pretty famous in his time, he was a rock singer, maybe you heard of him, maybe not. And my mum was the loveliest person in the world, she was an angel and the smartest person I have the pleasure of ever knowing.- She gave a sad smile and as quickly as it came, it left. She moved to the next question as nothing happened.- Daniel paused the video and lifted his eyes to look at her, her back was facing him and he had this huge, immense, need to give her the entire world. Whatever she wanted he was willing to give her.
-“What Tes did on quarantine?”- A knowing cheeky smile appeared on her face. -Actually nothing related to music but I did a lot of things. “When is Tes releasing new music?” I see what all of you did there, you want the scoop.- She said pointing at the people behind the camera joking. -Soon people soon, be aware because it can be at any time. Maybe you are sleeping, having a drink with friends, having a wee or breakfast and BAM my new album is out. You will never know what hit you.- The people there laughed. -Okay people I think that’s all. Thank you for watching and I hope I answer all your weird questions. See you.- Daniel put his phone on the table and walked towards her.
-This smells great, gorgeous.- Daniel grabbed her from her hips and kissed her neck.
Tes melted into his touch. His lips on her neck made her giggled. -I’m kind of experimenting here, so thank you.
Daniel took a step back, leaning into the counter, to let her keep doing what she was doing. -I have a question.
-Mhm, shoot.- Her hands tremble a little with those words, but thank God she had her back to him.
-I’m a king now?- Tes opened her eyes big and looked at him like a cat ate her tongue making Dan laugh.
-Sorry? I think. I told them to leave it because I thought that it wouldn't worry you, but if it does I'm so sorry Dan, truly.
Daniel shook his head. -Nothing like that, it flatters me, a lot actually. It stucks my ego.- He said smiling.
-I figured. Wait till you listen to the song.- She said without thinking. Daniel looked at her surprise and her eyes opened big, again.
-It comes from a song?- She nodded slowly. -Can I hear it?- She shook her head. -Why?
-Cause it’s a surprise. I’m waiting till the perfect time to show you the whole thing finished.- Tes’ voice came out like a whisper.
-Oh okay, I will wait then.- Tes looked at him as if she didn’t believe a single word he said. Daniel took a couple steps towards her and grabbed her face. -Believe me, I’m not mad. I will wait till you want to show me your album. It’s completely fine.- He kissed her nose sweetly and she hugged him from the waist.
After that little cute moment they sat to have lunch in the living room. A movie playing on the big TV, his leg touching hers and compliments from him to her cooking skills. A quiet and peaceful time, just what he wanted after his weekend. Tes ended up curled around him, her legs on top of his, her back against the armrest and his hand on her hip, Daniel gaze was fully concentrated on what was on the TV but his hand was drawing circles on her skin.
Tes started giggling like a teenenger, making Daniel look at her weirdly. -What got into you, gorgeous?- She looked at him and bit her lips. He knew that looked and that looked meant that he would like what she was about to say.
-Alex sent me a tweet that went viral, would you like me to read it to you?- She said teasingly.
-Oh please, do the honours gorgeous.
She cleared her throat and looked at him from under her long lashes, a look that raised the temperature of his body and made him hard. -It says, "Daniel didn’t answer Lando when he asked what other activities he does in the shower in the “This or That video”, and Tes said right away she screamed in the shower when they asked her if she sang in the shower. I think we know the answers, people.”- Daniel raised an eyebrow at how blushed Tes was.
-I still can’t believe that you said that, gorgeous.- His hand stroked her leg up and down, slowly.
His simple touch gave her goosebumps. -You and I both bae.- Her eyes follow the path of his hand. -But they put it out of context, I meant that I don’t sing like I do on stage.
Daniel nodded. -Yeah yeah. I understand, but you and I know that you also scream in the shower. We proved it a bunch of times.- The look on his eyes said everything.
Her brain gave her flashbacks of all those fun times in the shower with him. Her mouth is becoming dry. -Don’t tease me unless you do something about it.- They were looking at eachother like they were challenging the other. -I’m serious, don't threaten me with a good time Ricciardo
He looked at her with a brow raise and in a blink of an eye he was on top of her, his leg between hers. His nose caressing hers, lustful eyes. Tes wet her lips with her tongue. They were face to face with big smiles on their lips.
Slowly, his hands moved from her legs to her waist, under her shirt, that was his at some point. -What are you doing now, Ricciardo?- She said in a low tone. They were so close that their lips were almost touching.
He gave her a smirk that made her get on fire from the inside. -Doing something about it, I’m going to give you a good time.- And he crushed his lips against her.

S.N.A.F.U CH78 ‘Christmas Morning’
After returning to midnight mass and having a warm shot of spiced rum night cap Eadaoin and Daniel went to bed. Still being jetlagged after their return from Los Angeles only three days previously they slept late and only rose when the smell of sizzling bacon permeated the house.  Eadaoin was the first one roused from her slumber and rolled over to face Daniel whose face was smooshed into his pillow.  She yawned and stretched then reached out and ran her fingers through his tousled hair.
“Wakey wakey Driver Man,” she murmured “Merry Christmas.”
Daniel scrunched up his nose and groaned
“Don’twannagetup.” He complained keeping his eyes shut “wannastayinbedallday.”
“You can’t do that Isaac and Isabella will run down the hallway, burst in here and jump on you,” Eadaoin said with a giggle “besides we have lunch to prepare and presents to open, c’mon if you get up now I’ll shower with you.”
The prospect of that finally dragged Daniel into the land of the living.
“The only thing that would get me out of bed on this cold morning is the prospect of seeing your boobs in my face,” he said his voice croaky with sleep.
“You assume you’re going to see my boobs?” Eadaoin questioned with a raised eyebrow.
Daniel lunged forward and blew a very loud and very wet raspberry between her boobs.  Eadaoin let out a shriek of laughter and smacked his shoulder.
“Fuck you!” she exclaimed shrilly.
“Well if we get up now we can have some fun in the shower,” Daniel said wiggling his eyebrows suggestively “there’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than to engage in some hanky panky don’t you think?”
Eadaoin just rolled her eyes.
*******************************************************************************************
Despite Eadaoin’s best efforts at just being in the shower to wash herself, Daniel’s handsy attention got the better of her and they ended up having two rather enthusiastic rounds of sex in the shower, then when they exited the steamed up bathroom Daniel pushed Eadaoin up against the dresser and dove between her legs, eating her out again til her knees buckled.
“Oh my god!” she groaned as the curly haired driver lapped at her oversensitive core “Daniel get off me! We would literally be the only people still in our bedrooms!  I need breakfast!”
Finally Daniel pulled away a cocky grin upon his face.
“I don’t,” he quipped standing up and cheekily smacking her on the backside “I just had a taco for breakfast.”
“Oh for fuc-don’t be so crass!” Eadaoin exclaimed allowing him to clean her up “everyone is going to know you just spent the last half an hour making me cum!  They’re not stupid!”
“Ha!  That’s ripe coming from you!” Daniel exclaimed cheekily as they began to dress “you’re more crass than I am!”
“That is up for debate!” Eadaoin declared pulling on a pair of his Enchante track pants.
The pair dressed and Eadaoin was just pulling her hair into a messy bun when Daniel emerged from their walk in wardrobe something clutched in his hand.
“You got a tick?” he asked.
“Mmmf hang on.” Eadaoin replied pulling an elastic out of her mouth.
Daniel sat on the end of their bed and waited as Eadaoin finished fixing her hair. He then encouraged her to sit right next to him.
“What’s up?” she asked brightly.
“You know I love you, right?” Daniel began.
Eadaoin raised her eyebrows.
“Of course.” She said in confusion “why do you ask?”
Daniel reached into his track pants pocket and pulled out a delicate diamond ring in the shape of an infinity symbol.
“I want it give you this,” he began.
Eadaoin’s eyes widened and her hands flew to her mouth.
“Are you proposing?” she hissed.
“No no I’m not!” Daniel replied “and I’ll tell you why...”
“Go on....”
“This is a promise ring,” Daniel began his voice thick with emotion “I’m nowhere near ready to get married, and honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready but this ring means I’m committed to you, you are my one and done, it means there’s no one else but you.  Maybe we’ll get married one day maybe we won’t but whatever happens I want to be the one to wake up next to you every day for the rest of my life and I definitely want to be the one with first dibs on pissing you off for the rest of my and your life....will you wear it?”
Tears poured down Eadaoin’s cheeks and she nodded.  Daniel grasped her right hand and slipped it over her right ring finger.
“There, it looks pretty,” Daniel said with a smile.
Eadaoin smiled and kissed him softly on the lips.
“We better get downstairs or we’re going to cop a ton of teasing,” she said thickly as she stood up and laced her fingers through his.
No sooner had Eadaoin finished speaking than a loud knock came at their bedroom door.
“C’mon you two time for shagging later!” Cahir called “Mum and Grace are making scrambled eggs!”
“You should go suck an egg!” Eadaoin declared as she pulled open the door “gobshite.”
“Merry Christmas to you too nugget!”
“Sod off!”
“Merry Christmas mate,” Cahir said with a chuckle as he slapped Daniel on the shoulder cheerfully “Isaac and Isabella are already wondering where you are.”
“They’re up?” Daniel asked in surprise “they were exhausted after we got home from midnight mass.”
“Well they’re up and about now squealing about what Santa brought them,” Cahir replied as they followed Eadaoin down the stairs “they think Carrot and Cabbage are just the best.”
“Thought they might, they love dogs,” Daniel replied.
The two men made their way downstairs and into the kitchen where there was a hive of activity.  Grace and Roisin were holding court in the kitchen making an enormous batch of bacon and eggs and Joe and Donnacha were setting the table whilst Michelle and her husband were supervising Isaac and Isabella who were playing rug of war with Carrot and Cabbage Cahir’s two golden retrievers.
“UNCLE DANIIIIIIIIEL!” Isaac yelled
“Oi no yelling!” Michelle exclaimed telling off her son as he and his sister raced over to Daniel and latched on to his muscular legs.
“You took forever!” Isaac exclaimed “Nonna said she thought you were going to sleep all day!”
“No chance with you two yelling and screaming,” Daniel said cheekily easily scooping up his niece and nephew “you two hungry?”
“Starvin!” Isabella replied “Santa came Uncle Daniel!  There are lots and lots and lots of presents!”
“I know and some of them are for you and your brother,” Daniel replied “but you know the rules no present opening til after lunch.”
“Aw but-”
“Rules guys, trust me it’ll be worth it,” Daniel informed his niece and nephew with a chuckle “you go play with Carrot and Cabbage, I’m going to help Rosin and Nonna okay?”
Isabella sighed dramatically.
“Oh alright.”
The two siblings ran off and Daniel made his way into the kitchen where Eadaoin was now helping her mother and Grace.
“Buon Natale sweetheart, did you sleep alright?” Grace asked.
“Buon Natale Mum, kinda, jetlag’s still kicking my arse,” Daniel replied embracing his mother “think I might be having my first Christmas afternoon nap since I was Isaac’s age today I’m absolutely knackered.”
“Have a snooze before lunch, everything’s done except the turkey and pork but that’ll be done by one,” Grace said cheerfully “Roisin and I looked in the fridge and it seems you and Eadie have done all the prep.”
“Yeah everything’s all set,” Daniel replied with a happy sigh “can’t be sure it’ll be as good as Nonna and Nonno’s spread but we tried.”
“It won’t be good or bad it’ll be what we all make it,” Roisin said cheerfully “it’ll just be different.”
“And different is good,” Grace piped up “have you heard from Michael Daniel?”
“Not yet Ma, it’s one in the morning back in Perth he’d be dead to the world, I’ll ring him tonight,” Daniel replied “he’s got presents for us all though under the tree and I promised I’d video everyone opening them.”
“Poor bloke having to spend Christmas Day in quarantine,” Cahir piped up fetching plates from a nearby cupboard “that’s got to be boring as hell.”
“Well it’s not something I’d like to do but he hasn’t seen his family in months and is just as family orientated as I am so he’s willing to stick it out,” Daniel replied “he’ll be alright though, he’ll still have the same big loud Italian Christmas, his family have agreed to delay everything by one day so he can join them.”
Barely twenty minutes after arriving downstairs Daniel and Eadoin joined everyone else at the dinner table. Eadaoin was helping herself to some fried tomato when Grace suddenly grabbed her right hand, her face lighting up.
“Is that a new ring?” she asked loudly a huge grin plastered across her face “Daniel did you propose?”
Daniel rolled his eyes as everyone squealed and burst into excited chatter.
“Are you getting married Uncle Daniel?” Isabella squealed excitedly.
“Knew this was going to happen,” Daniel muttered to Eadaoin as Grace and Roisin tittered excitedly “Mum....mum MUM EADIE AND I ARE NOT GETTING MARRIED!”
“You’re not?” the elder Ricciardo asked in disappointment.
“Not yet,” Eadaoin chipped in reaching across the table and lacing her fingers through Daniel’s “it is a new ring but not the type you think it is.”
“And what type is it?” Grace asked.
“It’s a promise ring,” Daniel revealed “I’m not ready to get married yet, neither’s Eadie, we’re still figuring out who we are as a couple.  I gave her the ring this morning and asked her to wait for me for us, it’s a one day, you’re my one and done ring not and engagement ring.”
Grace, Roisin, Michelle and even little Isabella swooned.
“Who know my annoying little brother could be a Mills and Boon level romantic?” Michelle quipped in amusement “it’s actually quite nauseating.”
Daniel rolled his eyes, his face a bright shade of rouge.
“Shut up.” he muttered.
“Oh he can be,” Eadaoin teased serving herself up some fried tomato and passing the plate to Daniel “but neither of us advertise it.”
“Coulda fooled me,” Cahir said with a snort “the amount of times I’ve busted you two snogging....”
“Only because you have no idea how to knock!” Eadaoin exclaimed her face matching the colour of her hair “go on eat your breakfast and don’t be a prat!”
*******************************************************************************************After breakfast Daniel and Eadaoin washed up whilst everyone else began setting up for lunch.
“I knew we’d get the reaction we did once Mum spied your ring,” Daniel said as he placed a plate in the dishwasher “god can you imagine what her reaction would have been if I had actually proposed?”
“Probably similar to my Mum’s,” Eadaoin replied “a loud squeal and fainting to the floor.”
Daniel grinned and slipped an arm around her slender waist.
“Maybe tonight I can make you squeal loudly,” he murmured, his hot breath tickling her ear “I have a little something something upstairs for you that is not appropriate to gift you in front of everyone.  I figured we could take it to Monaco and try it out.”
Eadaoin grinned.
“Is it kinky?” she asked in a low voice allowing him to pull her close and sweep her around the kitchen floor.
“Maaaaaybe,” Daniel replied mysteriously “but then a carrot is kinky if you’re imaginative enough.”
“You bought me a carrot?” Eadaoin asked with a snort of laughter.
Daniel rolled his eyes.
“No but I promise you’ll like what I’ve got you,” he said “call it a gift basket of sorts.”
“I look forward to whatever it is.”
*******************************************************************************************
In a break from helping prepare lunch Daniel made himself a coffee and made his way out into the back deck where a fire war burning merrily in the grate.  Grace was there nursing her coffee a faraway look upon her face.
“You in the land of the living Mum?” he asked in amusement, plopping down next to his mother.
Grace grinned.
“Of course,” she replied playfully elbowing her son “how’s the turkey roll looking?”
“Good, be a couple of hours yet, Eadie just put some more cranberry glaze on it.” Daniel replied with a happy sigh.
“You’re happy,” Grace observed.
“Yeah I am,” Daniel admitted “life’s pretty good right now, well my form could improve at work but it’s the holidays and I’m purposely not giving a shit about that til I need to.  Next season is months away yet.”
“After what happened last year I didn’t think I’d see you this level of happy again,” Grace informed her son “meeting Eadaoin has really changed your life hasn’t it?”
“Yeah it has,” Daniel replied with a goofy grin “and I’m not embarrassed to admit it, I hope to introduce her to Uncle Charlie and Nonno and Nonna one day.”
“I’m sure that day will come sooner than you think,” Grace said sipping from her mug “that ring is pretty.”
“Hmm it is, I got it in Mexico City when I was there,” Daniel revealed “it came from a little hole in the wall family jeweller next to the restaurant Blake, Michael and I go to every year.  I was looking for a little bracelet or a pair of earrings something cute Eadie could wear every day and that jumped out at me.”
“You chose well it suits her,” Grace said “it was almost an engagement ring wasn’t it?”
Daniel sighed.
“Yeah it was,” he confessed “but as I said to Eadie, I’m not ready yet and I knew as a pair we weren’t ready yet, that shit with Jem has only just finished and we’ve only just moved in together, we’re still figuring out who we are as a couple living in the same house. I want this relationship to be solid, built on more secure foundations than the one I had with Jem because I sure as hell don’t want to endure another breakup like that again.”
“You won’t,” Grace said at once “call it a mother’s intuition but you and Eadaoin are he real deal I could see that from that initial zoom call during Monaco race week when you introduced her to your father and I, your connection was apparent even back then, I told your Nonna that I had a good feel about her.”
“You did?” Daniel asked in amusement.
“Yup I was right about Michelle and J and I know I’m right about you and Eadie,” Grace said confidently “even more so now that I’ve been around her company for a couple of days.  She exudes a confidence that’s infectious; she’s polite, considerate, funny and loves my baby boy.  That’s enough for me and your father.”
“I’m glad you approve,” Daniel said happily.
A moment later Isaac came rushing out of the house wrapped head to toe in a puffer body suit his blue eyes alive with mischief.
“Oh oh someone’s looking for trouble to get into,” Daniel said in amusement as Carrot and Cabbage followed with a gleeful yap “hey kiddo.”
Isaac turned on the spot and ran over to his uncle leaping into his arms.
“Ooof you’re getting a bit big to keep doing that buddy,” Daniel said with a grunt ruffling his nephew’s hair up affectionately “where’s your sister?”
“Inside with Eadie and Roisin making plum pudding,” Isaac answered at once “it smells yuuuuuuum!  Everything smells yum!”
“You hungry already?” Daniel asked in amusement “you only just finished breakfast.”
Isaac rolled his eyes.
“That was hours ago Uncle Daniel!” he said dryly “I’m starvin’!”
“You’re always starving you’re a bottomless pit,” Daniel teased lifting his nephew up and plopping him down on his lap “you having fun in England?  Seeing my new place, meeting Eadie?”
“Uh huh, Edie's super duper pretty!” Isaac exclaimed “I really really like her.”
“That’s good because I really really like her,” Daniel told his nephew “and I agree she is super duper pretty.  You should see her when she dresses up all fancy she’s really super duper extra super duper pretty then.”
“Do you love her Uncle Daniel?”
“I do matey lots and lots.” Daniel replied “and I tell her that every day.”
“Even when you’re away racin’?”
“Yup even then.”
“Sounds like Mum and Dad and Nonno and Nonna and Bisnonna and Bisnonna, they’re aaaaaaaaaalllways kissin’!”
“Well maybe Eadie and I are like that,” Daniel said with a grin “have you told Eadie she’s really pretty?”
Isaac went bright red.
“Naw,” he said.
“Well maybe you should, if you’re nice and polite and say excuse me first, you can even say I said it was okay first if you like.”
Isaac grinned.
“Really?” he asked with a giggle.
“Yup, in fact you can go in the house now and tell everyone I said it was alright to say they all look super duper pretty.”
“Oh Daniel don’t encourage him!” Grace exclaimed in amused exasperation.
“Excuse me Nonna Uncle Daniel said it was alright for me to say you’re super duper pretty!” Isaac exclaimed with a shrill giggle.
“You are an incorrigible child!” Grace told Daniel in exasperation “thankyou honey.”
How about you tell Nonno, Dad, Cahir and Donnacha they’re super duper pretty too?” Daniel suggested “they’ll really like that.”
“Daniel Joseph Ricciardo are you seriously corrupting your nephew?” Grace exclaimed in exasperation “it would serve you right if Michelle hit you!”
“I’mma do it Nonna!” Isaac exclaimed with a shrill giggle as he slid off Daniel’s lap.
And the young boy ran off back inside before Grace could call him back.
“HEY EVERYONE YOU’RE ALL SUPER DUPER PRETTY!” Isaac yelled with a shrill giggle “Uncle Daniel said I could say that!”
“Ti prendo a calci in culo! Stai corrompendo mio figlio! Un giorno avrai un bambino esattamente come QUELLO e ti servirà bene!” (I'm going to kick your arse!  You're corrupting my child!  One day you're going to have a kid exactly like THAT and it'll serve you right!) Michelle scolded Daniel as she stuck her head out of the back door.
Daniel roared with laughter.
“Gotta get some practice in before that happens sis,” Daniel said with a grin blowing his sister a cheeky kiss “everyone’s got to have a cool uncle and I’m more than happy fulfill that duty, especially seeing as I don’t see you guys often.”
Michelle rolled her eyes and blew her brother a loud raspberry before returning inside.
“So what are you and Dad doing for New Years Eve?” Daniel asked leaning forward and adding another chunk of wood to the fire pit.
“We’re heading into London for a night at Winter Wonderland for the kids,” Grace replied “we’ll do all the sideshows and rides then stick around for the fireworks.  I think your father is looking forward to it more than Isaac and Isabella.”
Daniel chuckled.
“You know Dad he’s a big kid like me,” he said “that’s where I get it from.  You’re more serious and that’s where ‘chelle gets her seriousness from.”
“I don’t disagree with that,” Grace responded with a smile and a happy sigh.
“Are you happy Mum?” Daniel asked after a moment of companiable silence “you seem to be.”
“I am honey,” Grace replied with a smile that matched her son’s “the business back home is booming, both of my babies are happy and I’m spending the most wonderful time of the year with everyone that is near and dear to me, life’s pretty much perfect you know.”
“That’s good to hear.”
*******************************************************************************************
Shortly after half past one in the afternoon Daniel and Eadaoin and their families sat down at the dinner table for Christmas lunch. As hosts of the meal Daniel and Eadaoin said grace Eadaoin in Gaelic and Daniel in Italian and English before lively conversation broke out and the meal began.  Daniel and Eadaoin sat at the head of the table and Isaac and Isabella sat next to them.
“The day’s not even half over and already I think this is the best Christmas ever,” Eadaoin said to Daniel in a low voice as she served herself a hasselback potato and passed the dish to Michelle.
“Isn’t it just?” Daniel replied brightly “if we weren’t at a table with our families I’d kiss you so hard right now.”
“Maybe when no one’s looking I’ll get a quick snog in.” Eadaoin whispered in his ear “in the meantime I’ll just squeeze your-”
“Guys really?  At the dinner table?” Cahir exclaimed “decency puh-leez.  There are children present!”
Eadaoin rolled her eyes
“Póg mo thóin!” (kiss my arse!) she muttered her race burning a bright red “yeah there are children at the table and the youngest one is you!”
Isaac and Isabella watched the bantery exchange in amusement.
“Edie you and Cally are like Mummy and Uncle Daniel!” Isaac declared with a shrill giggle “they always teasin’ each other at the table!”
“So do you and your sister!” Michelle told her son with a giggle.
“It’s a brother and sister thing kiddo,” Eadaoin told Isaac affectionately pinching his cheek “it happens in all families.”
“Mainly ours apparently,” Roisin said dryly “every meal when you two were small one of you said something to annoy the other.”
“Oh God you should have seen Daniel and Michelle-” Grace began with a grin.
“Ah mamma! Davvero? ADESSO? Mamma mia!” (Oh Mum!  Really? NOW? Mama mia!) Daniel exclaimed “aye aye aye!  Can we leave the ‘When Danny was a kid stories til after Edie and I leave for Monaco?”
Grace playfully threw a teatowel at her son.
“I’ll make sure to,” she said in amusement “Ora mangia il tuo pranzo” (Now eat your meal)

Summary: The world feels like it’s ending, but one thing is for sure. Em knows that Dan isn’t going to leave her behind, no matter what’s going on. So she’s going to follow him wherever they go.
Warnings: covid-19, pining, pandemic talk, visa worries, unrequited love.
Wordcount: 8.9k
A/N: Guess who’s back! Apologies for the delay, it’s been a weird time for us. But we’re back and we hope this more than makes up for the delay. Let us know what you think!!
March 2020
Em really had no idea how she let Dan convince her to come up to his driver room and close the door behind her. It was the first proper day back in the paddock at a race weekend, one of the if not the busiest weekend for him thanks to his home race, but even with all of that happening he wanted her. Dan wanted her right there against the wall in that tiny room, not caring that the world was outside waiting for him.
She had no idea what excuse he invented or what lie he’d said, she really didn’t care even though she should have known it so she could confirm when she went downstairs. But he was one of the few people who could make black and yellow look so good, mixed with his longer than normal hair and the stubble that had her rubbing her legs together under her dress. He carried himself with complete confidence as he walked through the paddock, Em beside him holding her iPad and ever present bag. It had her daydreaming about what Dan was going to do to her once they were back at the hotel, helped along with his cocky smile and the way he winked at her every single time he caught her eye. It made her need to bite her lip and stare at her tablet, forcing the flush that wanted to fill her cheeks down. It didn’t stop her underwear getting ruined thanks to the little touches that had her in the palm of his hand. Hours of Dan putting an arm around her shoulder during breakfast, a hand on her waist as he walked by, running his fingers along her thigh under the table when they had lunch.
When Dan said he needed to run over his schedule for the weekend with her so they’d be left alone while the boys went to do something and his family sat in hospitality she decided to believe that they’d actually be doing work. She shouldn’t have, but she didn’t regret it in the slightest. As soon as the door was shut her back was against it, Dan’s lips moving along her jaw to her neck and down to her collarbones. As she groaned out his name his hands were on her ass, lifting her against him to wrap her legs around his waist. She should have known this would happen as soon as she decided to wear a dress that morning.
She had known that Dan wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off her, but she thought he would have glued himself to her when they made it back to the hotel. She never thought it would have been so soon. Em definitely didn’t think that he’d have dragged her alone when the paddock was buzzing and hospitality was full of people. But his impatience was just one of the reasons why he lifted her dress up before dropping to his knees in front of her. The other reason was the black knee length skater dress that she decided to wear.
She wanted to look good on her first day back at work. It was the first day of her first full season working as part of Dan’s team, and she wanted to look nice. The rest of the year she’d probably wear one of her Renault shirts and jeans, but at least that first day when she was working with some of Dan’s sponsors she wanted to look good and show she was there from Dan rather than the team. She really should have known that the dark material would have ended up bunched around her waist. But she didn’t think about consequences or rumours stemming from what she was wearing, or the rumours running around the paddock. She couldn’t, not when the man she loved more than anyone ever in her life was fucking her like it was the last thing he’d do in his life.
All she could feel was Dan’s lips against her skin and his hands holding her up by her ass. The noise of the paddock disappeared behind the sounds of their moans as Dan kept repeating her name while he buried himself deeper and deeper inside of her. There was no gap between where Dan ended and she began, his grin against her lips while she kissed him in a desperate attempt to keep quiet. Her fingers lightly pulled his hair, feeling the way he nipped at her lower lip in response. There was nothing as beautiful as the way Dan smiled at her just after they finished, probably moments away from being discovered but still happy and at ease with her.
They were an absolute mess and Em fully knew it, but she loved every single second of it. To see Dan so happy after the difficult first few months he’d had at Renault was everything. All she wanted was for him to be happy, and if hiding in a room just the two of them made him happy then it was perfect. Even if she knew everyone would think that they’d been having sex as soon as they stepped out of the room.
“We’re a mess,” Em whispered, kissing his temple as Dan hid his face in her shoulder to pepper her neck with kisses.
“You just say that because you’re dripping in no time?” He joked, winning a nudge from her shoulder dislodging his head as he stared up at her.
“You better clean the mess you made, sir.”
“Emmyyyyyy don’t call me that when we don’t have time to fully enjoy ourselves. But you know I always clean up after myself.”
It was one last kiss before Dan got Em back on her feet, tugging some tissues from the box on the table to clean her up. It was something he did every single time, kissing Em’s legs while he made sure she was ready to go. Once they were all dressed and looked presentable again Dan pulled Em into a hug before she could open the door. She had no idea where it came from but she wasn’t going to complain at all if they got an extra minute or two. She hugged him back, resting her head against his chest as he held her tightly and she pushed a kiss just over his heart like she did every single night before she fell asleep. The spell was broken by a harsh knock on the door, the two of them stepping apart as if they were doing something illegal.
She couldn’t help but smile when Dan kissed the tip of her nose after she rubbed the tiny trace of light pink lipstick left on his lips. One of the magical things about them was that they were able to have an entire conversation without saying a single word. It was one of those situations, giving each other a nod to know they were ready to go. Em took five seconds to straighten her skirt and grab her iPad while she shook her hair out to make it look like it was artfully messy, not like it was sex hair. Dan ran a hand through his curls and fixed his shorts and then they were ready to pretend that they’d actually been working and talking about the driver’s briefing happening in an hour. When Dan opened the door she was ready to see any of Dan’s family on the other side, but the last person Em expected to see was Michael. Considering the look on Dan’s face he wasn’t expecting to see him either. Em pretended it was completely normal, throwing a “hey Mikey” over her shoulder as she left the room with the two men in it. She also pretended that she didn’t hear the “what the fuck, mate?” coming from Michael behind her.
She had no idea if what they were doing was obvious or not and she honestly didn’t care. All she did for the rest of the day was work, meeting the CEO of GoPro and bringing him around hospitality and talking to him about how Dan would be out shortly. It was easy to pretend that the most popular man in the city hadn’t been on his knees for her earlier.
Em kept convincing herself that it wasn’t their fault for what was happening. They’d spent literally every single day together since she’d asked Dan if he was still ok with her travelling with him after Monza. Every night they shared a bed. And if all of that wasn’t enough she’d spent most of the Christmas break all over him in Australia. The same way he had the year before he took her to a rented beach house a two hour drive away so they could be alone for a couple of days. There was no people, no distractions - not even her work iPad. It was summer days spent mostly naked and in bed all over each other. Even when they were on the farm it was the two of them back together alone unless Isaac or Isabella were staying with them. When they were with family or friends they said they were just friends, a facade that barely lasted long enough for them to be alone again.
There was no going back to reality after that trip. There was no stopping what they were doing when they went back to London and Dan didn’t even attempt to go back to his apartment, ordering takeout for them to be delivered to Em’s apartment. Even in testing in Barcelona she spent more time in Dan’s room than even pretending to be in her own. They were happy to be in their little bubble, and considering the bad news that kept coming from the real world Em was more than happy to stay there.
The news about coronavirus was getting louder and louder, and even in the paddock the rumours were spreading about McLaren and Haas staff. It was going crazy and Em hated it. Her anxiety was spiking every time a well meaning person started trying to ask about it, news from Italy that Ferrari staff had mentioned sounded hellish. Dan was the only one who was really able to keep her grounded. He made the noise go away, helping her to stay optimistic even though it felt like the world was falling apart.
As soon as they were back in the hotel she could feel herself getting more and more worried. There were rumours from home that the Premiership was going to stop matches from taking place, Austria, Ireland, Italy, and Spain had all announced that schools and offices should close. The whole day rumours about the race and the season being cancelled had spread like wildfire, and McLaren pulling out because of the positive case terrified her. Nobody would confirm anything, instead waiting for last minute information to arrive which caused the rumours and speculation to get louder and louder. It felt like more and more sports were cancelling their seasons, it felt logical for F1 to cancel theirs too. But the FIA and logic didn’t go together so there was no news. She wouldn’t have been surprised if they decided to keep going.
Dan kissed her head before going to take his shower, and Em turned on the tv for a few minutes. Five seconds later she wished she hadn’t. The news was talking about rising cases and numbers of ill and dying people in new countries. It was travelling before people realised and people were dying so fast it was terrifying. More countries were telling people to go home and talking about closing borders and stopping flights. New Zealand were organising flights to get citizens home.
That’s when the fear started to kick in, but she buried it down so she could get through dinner with everyone. She wasn’t Australian. Everyone she cared about was - Dan, his family, Blake and Michael who’d basically become brothers to her in everything except name - but she wasn’t. Dan made jokes that she was an honorary Aussie thanks to her trips to Perth, but it wasn’t true. Her passport was British, she was close to running up on the time she was allowed to be in Australia for on her visitor visa, and she’d have to leave. She’d have to go home on her own. She forced herself to calm as she changed, turning off the tv and putting one of her true crime podcasts on to make her get through the evening.
Once the mains were finished at dinner, Em excused herself and left earlier than she normally would. She wanted to see them, loved having Isabella on her lap as she ate one handedly because the little girl was clingy, but she was exhausted. Em spent too long yawning over her plate and felt terrible about it. The beginning of the season was always stressful, and that plus the jet lag because they didn’t get to have time in Perth before the first race, and not knowing what she was going to do was exhausting her. The uncertainty of not knowing if she’d get to stay with Dan felt like a nightmare. It was hugs and kisses goodnight, apologising again for being tired, and Em got in the lift back up to their room from the hotel restaurant. She got into a quick shower, not bothering to wash her hair but wanting to get the grime of the day off, before putting clean underwear and a tee on.
Dan somehow always knew when Em really needed him and that night was no different, Dan opening the room door ten minutes after she’d gotten under the duvet.
“What are you doing here?” Em asked, muting the ABC News channel as he pulled his shirt off.
“We were all heading up anyway, Mum told me to go to bed cause I’m up early in the morning. Renault PR texted me a new schedule, they want me at the track for seven thirty.”
It screamed an excuse to Em, no text from Renault who would usually send it to her first, but she wasn’t complaining. He went into the bathroom to brush his teeth and Em unmuted the tv, eyes staring at the rising European case number graphs.
She started to feel her heart rate rising with the terror of what was going on, but before she knew what she was doing the bathroom door was open and Dan slipped into the bed beside her, arms around her and pulling her close. Her back was against his chest while his hands were warm against her stomach and it felt like the world had disappeared. Even if it was only for a few moments.
“What did we say about you watching the news after dinner?” He murmured as he pushed kisses to her jaw. Em closed her eyes to feel the sensation, the smell of the shower gel he’d stolen from her surrounding them as she began to relax.
Dan was right. They had a deal that involved Em not watching the news at night. She could watch any true crime documentary or crime show that existed and she could sleep like a baby, but the news gave her nightmares and stopped her usually not great sleep. Dan said it was because she was so empathetic and that was why it happened. But whatever caused it, they made a deal after one particularly bad night when Dan woke to Em sobbing and shaking in her sleep.
“I know. I just…the world is falling apart. It’s terrifying. I’m scared, Danny.” It was hard for her to admit that to him and he just pulled her closer.
“It won’t fall apart, Emmy. It’s getting crazy out there but it won’t be that bad.”
“Maybe not. But they’re talking about Australia closing their borders. What if I have to go back to London alone?” Her voice cracked and she hated it but there was nothing she could do about it.
“I go back with you.”
“Dan-”
“I go back with you. There’s no discussion about it, we say goodbye to people and we go back together. But it won’t happen, right? We won’t be separated. And no more news for you, little miss. C’mon, did you take your melatonin? Let’s go to bed.”
The mix of a melatonin gummy, sheer exhaustion, jet lag, and Dan’s hugs and kisses on her forehead had Em falling asleep in no time. For a race weekend that was a miracle. When she woke up there was a moment of absolute bliss where she could forget about the world outside their bed. All she had to be aware of was that the handsome man snoring by her side was her Danny. Too soon the alarm on his phone went off too loudly in the silent room and it was back to reality and the mess that was the world. On any day she would say she wanted to stay in bed with Dan rather than go to a busy paddock. There was nothing she liked less than strangers pointing cameras and phones at them, asking for Dan’s autographs and Em getting looks from jealous women when she wasn’t in team gear. There had been one confirmed case in the paddock and probably more. She didn’t want the man she loved there. She didn’t want his family there, she didn’t want their friends there. She didn’t want to be there. But if Dan was going, she was going.
She could tell how Dan didn’t want Em or his family in the paddock either. Trying to convince everyone else to stay in the hotel or do something away from the paddock full of people was surprisingly easy. It was still unclear if there’d be a race or not so she watched as he told his family not to go. If it did happen they could come for Saturday and Sunday and the fun parts, but they didn’t need to be there for just practices on Friday. But while he was trying to convince them she could tell that he was trying to find a way to convince her too. The gears were whirring behind tired eyes, she could practically see his brain working overtime. He was overthinking all of it, but no matter what he said her answer was going to be the same.
“So I was thinking you could stay here with everyone? Pack our things in case we need to leave fast?”. Em wanted to laugh. She really didn’t think he would try an excuse like that. At least she thought that he’d try a smoother excuse, but really nothing was good enough. Especially considering she had a job to do. She was just glad he waited for Michael and Blake to get up from the table to get coffees for everyone.
“Do you really think I’m letting you go without me?” Em didn’t even lift her head from the email she was reading to respond. She knew that if she looked up he’d give her the big brown puppy eyes and he’d try convince her, so instead she swapped to the schedule for the day. Covid or not she was sticking to it till she was told otherwise.
“There’s not gonna be much to do anyway. You may as well stay here.”
“You’ve seen the news, Dan. What if there’s a case and they lock the paddock down? Or the hotel? What if we get separated and I can’t get back to you?” She bit the bitter taste of panic back as she looked at him at last, worry filling his face.
“Hey, I’m always gonna come back to you. Always. Forget what I said, ok? We’ll stick together. We’ll figure it all out later.”
“Just keep me by your side. Please? I…Danny just promise me you won’t leave me alone.” Asking it felt impossible but his smile lit her insides up in a ridiculous way.
“I’m never gonna do that.” She let the breath she didn’t know she was holding out and smiled.
“You mean it?”
“I promise.” Dan grabbed her hand, squeezing it under the table. “You know, right?”
“I know.” It was quiet between them until Em spotted Blake on his way back with two cups of coffee in his hand, needing to have conversation so the mood wasn’t so heavy. “What did you do last night when I fell asleep? You look tired.”
“Nothing really. You know what I’m like before the first race of the season, I couldn’t sleep straight away. Plus you looked too cute so I was a creep and watched you sleep.”
“Silly. Thanks, though.”
They held hands extra tightly that morning on the way to the circuit. Dan acted like he didn’t care about Blake and Michael sitting in the front seats, and if she was honest with herself Em really didn’t care about them either. The world was falling apart but Dan was holding her hand and they were together. He’d promised that he wasn’t going to separate from her or let someone take her away. She may not believe in much, but she believed in Dan when he gave his word. Especially to her.
It was probably anxiety and a little bit of paranoia, but Em spent the drive insisting she was fine staying in Dan’s driver room to work rather than down in hospitality. Her anxiety was too high for her to be happy around people so staying alone and in the quiet was better. At least until there was definite news about what was happening. Dan didn’t discuss it either, just pushing kisses to her knuckles as they drove through the Melbourne traffic. As soon as they pulled into the parking spot the just friends persona came down over both of them, letting go and Em getting into her professional mode.
Like any other Friday she took a deep breath while she walked with Blake, Dan and Michael in front of them waving to the Netflix cameras and Dan giving autographs. It was little waves from afar as they reached the black hospitality, Michael going to check the garage and make sure an icebath was ready and Blake going to check for some visitors. Dan walked up to the room with her, holding the door open and watching as she got settled in.
“You should go chat to Cyril, see if the FIA have any news or made a decision. Then there’s a PR meeting with Esteban in 20, and after that it’s ESPN, Dazn, Sky, and Channel 4. In that order.” She felt like she was put together as she talked but turning to see Dan made her feel like she wasn’t.
“Everyone’s gonna ask about coronavirus, right?”
“Probably, it’s all anyone’s talking about. PR will give you the line to use, it’ll be something along the lines of ‘as long as all precautions are taken then we should be safe to race’.” Dan rolled his eyes while shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
“Can I get a hug before I go?” She hadn’t even opened her arms when he pulled her close, Em standing between his legs as he leaned against the massage table.
“I’ll be here if you need me, I’m a text away Danny. But you need to go.”
“Just a minute.” It was more kisses pushed to her forehead and ear before he whispered his plans. “I’m getting us to Perth if shit goes bad. Us on the farm, you can break in the new kitchen fully cause we didn’t have long over Christmas.”
Em froze. It felt so perfect to her, the two of them on the farm together, getting to relax and be together and happy. It was too good to be true. Literally. “I can’t. My visa, I don’t have much time on it because of how long I’ve been here. I have to go back.”
“Fixed it.” She shot her head up to look at him. “Under special circumstances it can be changed to twelve months instead of three, so I applied for it for you last night.”
“What?”
“Nobody is taking you away from us. I’m not letting it happen. Blake and I talked already, if it doesn’t get approved we’re going back to London. You’re not going alone.” She knew the awe was on her face from his words. Her sweet, brilliant man who had fixed her worries without even knowing about them. Before she knew what to say his phone started ringing.
“Dan…”
“I can’t, Emmy. I can’t let it happen. I promised earlier that I’m not gonna leave you alone, and I mean it. I’m not leaving you.”
“Dan! Your phone.” She nudged him at the vibrating device, Michael’s name on screen.
“Leave it.”
“Want me to answer?” He nodded and she picked it up, holding onto him as she slid the answer bar.
“Hey Michael, it’s Em…he’s got his hands full at the moment, I’ll fill him in. We’ll meet you in hospitality in ten, is that ok? Perfect, see you there.” She hung it up, putting it back down on the massage table and holding onto Dan. “Danny?”
“Yeah?” His voice was flat and she knew that he knew what she was going to say.
“The race is officially cancelled.”
“Good.” His hands gripped her tighter, pulling her into him. Em nuzzled against his chest, holding onto the one solid thing in her world before asking what they were doing. “Five minutes of this. Then the hotel and pack. There’s a plane on standby out in Avalon to take us all home. Than the farm. I figure we’ll have to separate from most people, but we can do it.”
“Sounds good to me.” She moved a curl from in front of his eyes, realisation filling her. “That’s why you didn’t sleep last night.”
“I needed a plan.” His head was nuzzled into her neck as he spoke and she just held him to give all the comfort she possibly could. “You still should have told me.”
“I got it. You don’t need to worry, I’m making sure you’re ok. If the world as we know it is ending then it ends with us together, right?”
She should have sent him out to see what was going on, either going with him to work out what they were doing next or packing the little bits that had been taken out of their bags. She should have been finding Blake and Michael. But she just couldn't let him go. His words were echoing in her head, running wild and all she could do was kiss Dan as he held her. It wasn't even the start of a makeout session, just enjoying what was going to be one of their last moments alone. Small kisses with their lips pressed against each other, holding on together. The farm was big but if the boys were staying with them then privacy was going to be out the window in no time. There'd be no shared bedroom, nothing like they had, and she'd have to quickly get used to it. She loved the boys but if they had to stay locked down for days or weeks like the news out of Europe was saying then she might go insane.
Like almost every time they had some privacy in a paddock there was a knock on the door to interrupt them. Dan called for whoever was there to come in, not untwining himself from Em. His hands were under her shirt, glued to the skin on her waist as they were in each others arms. They needed that closeness and togetherness that only they could provide for each other. That day it didn't matter who was coming in and would see them like that. She heard the rumours from the paddock, people thinking they were together. Most of Renault knew that there was something going between them, but the team kept their secret. It wouldn't be strange for any of them to see them together. She never went around holding hands or hugging closely, but nobody was ever surprised to see Dan hanging out of her.
But it wasn't a random member of Renault staff, it was Michael who opened the door and stared at them. She'd known him for more than two years and Em knew that he wasn't happy looking at them.
"What's up? I thought I said we were meeting in a couple of minutes?" She lifted up slightly from Dan who kept a hold of her.
"Blake's looking for you." At that Dan let her go, Em pulling her black and yellow shirt down and turning around. "Not you, Em. He wants Dan."
"Cool, hospitality?" Michael nodded and Dan squeezed Em's hip briefly. "Get your stuff ready cause we're leaving as soon as we can. Will you call Mum and Dad for me and tell them to pack up? Please?"
"I'm on it, I'll tell them we'll see everyone in the hotel in an hour? That way the kids don't get too confused. I've got your backpack and the rest of your things."
"Thanks, Emmy."
"Go. Take care out there, yeah? Don't touch anything unless you have to."
It was one last hand squeeze and a wink that his heart wasn't in as he left the room, Michael following quickly behind him. Em was completely confused while she packed their things, picking up phone chargers and one of Dan's hoodies to put into his bag. She had no idea why Michael looked so mad when he saw them cuddling. As little as she liked remembering it he had literally walked in on them in China the year before. He knew that they were sleeping together but he seemed like it was a surprise to see them like that. She'd been clear about where she was going to spend the day, and Dan had insisted he'd come check on her whenever he could. Thinking about his reaction just made her sad, so instead she finished getting the bags together. Hotel, pack her suitcase, make sure she hadn't left anything behind, and to the plane. She could do this. She could do it.
A quick phone call to Grace to fill her in on Dan's plans was the first thing she did once she packed, giving the heads up for everyone to pack up and be ready. It was a last double check of everything before putting Dan's backpack on one shoulder and Blake's on the other, her handbag over her elbow. She possibly could have managed Michael's bag too, but she decided to be petty. If he was going to act annoyed when he had no reason to be then she was leaving his stuff behind.
Like they promised they were all back at the hotel within an hour, heading straight up to pack. It was as she was zipping up her case that she realised the one thing she'd forgotten. Blake.
He wasn't from Perth. He wasn't even from WA. He was from the east coast, spending his holidays with family there. And now she was planning on escaping to Perth and what was her brother going to do? She relied on him to keep her sane in work and her private life. Dan came up behind her as she pushed down on the case, staring at it.
"Emmy? What's up?"
"I...eh. What's happening with Blake? Is he coming to the farm too? Or is he going home?"
"Do you want him to come with us?"
"Yeah," It was hard to say, Dan grabbing her hand as she did. "What if he's far away and something happens to him? Or us? Is it selfish?"
"It's not selfish, he's worried about us too. I'm pretty sure he wants to come anyway, lemme call him." She watched Dan ring Blake, the phone barely ringing before Dan blurted out his plan. The smile made Em relax, Blake was coming with them. It was going to be fine.
As soon as the suitcases were packed everyone was down in the lobby, multiple cars there to bring them all back to the airport. Em was texting Cyril with one hand, getting details about how everyone was getting out of the country before it was too late. The other hand was kept by Dan, pushing kisses to their interlaced fingers the same way he did when there was nobody around. It was Blake on the front seat with the driver as they finally made it out to the airport. A private jet was there on the tarmac awaiting their arrival.
It was surreal to her that getting onto a private jet was now normal, but it was. The plane was bigger than the one she'd been on before, more than enough room for the ten of them who were flying west. Em didn't exactly plan to sit next to Dan on the plane. It wasn't that she didn't want to - of course she did - but she figured she was better off leaving that seat for Michelle so she could talk to her brother before they were separated. Joe and Grace were already sitting on the other side of the table from Dan so she went to sit in the group of chairs across the small aisle from them. But Dan extended his arm out to pull her into the empty window seat, his bag reserving her place for her. He'd made jokes that she belonged beside him, but she never thought that he'd do something like this. It wasn't until Em nodded and went to sit in that he moved his bag, grinning like a kid who'd gotten exactly what he wanted.
She was just settled in, pulling a book out to read for part of the three hour flight when Isaac ran straight to her, arms up for her to pull him onto her lap. It had been so hard to explain to her nephew that they were going home but she couldn't see him for a couple of weeks. Explaining what was happening in the world felt impossible, so it was brought down to "everyone needs to stay at home for a little while, but we won't be able to see each other till then". He kind of understood what was happening, that he wouldn't get to come to the farm for a night even though Dan and Em would be there. He wasn't going to get to see them, so he took after his uncle and climbed onto Em's lap to get comfortable and cosy while he curled up with her.
"Can we has dinner tonight?"
"Have dinner, baby. And nope, not yet. We're gonna FaceTime for a couple of weeks."
"But you home!"
"I know. But it's to keep you safe. I promise we'll see you soon."
"Cuddle?"
"We can cuddle for the whole flight, promise."
Even though it was against almost every rule that existed in the history of aviation, Em didn’t put Isaac into his own seat as the door closed and takeoff began. Instead she took the blanket that the flight attendant offered her and spread it over them before fastening the seatbelt on top of them both, Her arms were wrapped around him for extra protection as he clung to her. She asked if he was going to nap during the flight, a shake of his head insisting that he was gonna stay awake. But she was comfy and safe to him, by the time the seatbelt sign switched off his breathing was deep and even against her. Ignoring her book she snuggled down into the seat, leaning her head against Dan and made herself try to get some sleep.
Dan wanted to melt with happiness and love as he watched the two of them fast asleep together. Em was against him on the seats and he put his arm around her so she could curl in and sleep. His mum took a photo of the three of them, a smile on her face as she showed it to him.
He wanted it so badly he nearly hurt thinking about it. He wanted his Emmy by his side every day, curled up against him no matter what the plane or car journey was. He wanted to watch her sleeping peacefully, get to hold her hand and kiss her forehead and chase away the sadness he saw in her nearly every day. He wanted a life and a home with her, matching rings and a wedding and marriage and to see her like this with their baby on her lap, not their nephew.
It used to be something he thought of as a maybe. As a if his partner wanted it he’d be interested, but that was it. He never thought settling down would be something that he wanted. And now looking at Em cuddling Isaac he knew he’d have a footie team with her if she wanted it. She just had to ask him and he’d retire there and then for her. He’d give it up and they’d pick somewhere to settle down and he’d change nappies and run around chasing kids with her eyes and wild curls.
He wanted to ask her. It was terrifying but he wanted it. Wanted to ask her to marry him as soon as they could get a date and to start trying for a family together. Spend lockdown making plans and trying for a baby. But he couldn’t do that to her.
Em was already struggling with the unknown future they were facing because of the coronavirus, it was unfair to ask her for anything. Especially such a huge change in their lives. Everyone had said that it was a two week lockdown and then things could go back to normal. He didn’t buy it though. It might be two weeks, it might be two months. He could be back racing at any point and he didn’t know. And if things went well and they got lucky? If he had to leave Emmy behind because she couldn’t travel with him he didn’t know what he’d do. Or if he missed something important because he had to race.
He couldn’t do it. Asking for this from Em when her anxiety was skyrocketing and they were facing a life without structure was unfair. She was already trying not to spiral, there was no choice here. No good choice. Yeah there was a chance, but he could feel it in his gut that it needed to be put on hold until they were more stable. There were more important things to do. Fix Em’s visa, stay in Perth, get through whatever was going on and finding out when things could start back up. Then he could plan their future. Baby steps. He fucking hated it, he wanted to run full force into everything he wanted, but he had to take baby steps to protect Em.
“She’s gonna be alright, you know that, right?” Blake leaned across the aisle to Dan, shaking him out of his thoughts.
“Huh?”
“Her visa. She’s gonna be fine, I did some digging, this is exactly what that visa is designed for. But if it’s not I’ve already emailed about getting a plane from Perth to London. We’ll need a fuel stop in the Middle East probably, but we can make it work.” It was the we that made Dan sit up a bit and look at him.
“You know you don’t need to come with us, right?”
“I know. But who’s gonna look after your messy arses if I’m not there? Or throw a book at the wall?”
“Oh fuck you!” He kept his voice low but his mum still heard, Grace giving him a glare. “Sorry, Ma.”
“Language, there’s kids on this plane.” She was smiling at his immediate apology, Dan just thankful that the kids were asleep.
“But seriously, thanks. You don’t have to do any of this.”
“You don’t have to thank me. I was thinking about it, if there’s something going on and you can’t go with her don’t worry about it, ok? I know you’ll be there as soon as you can be but I’ll be there and make sure she’s alright until you get back. She’s not gonna be alone.” It was the most serious he’d ever heard Blake in his life.
“I’m gonna be there. If she can’t stay in Perth then I’m not staying either. I made her a promise that I wouldn’t leave her side and I’m keeping it. Wherever she goes, I go. We’re a package deal now.”
“I get it but I wanted to make sure that you know I’m gonna be there for her. She’s my little sister, like you’re my brother.” Dan gave Blake a nod, emotion hitting him. It was gonna be ok. It had to be.
The flight passed quickly, Dan chatting quietly with his parents until Em woke up. They were interrupted by Michael coming up to him for a moment to double check that it was straight to the farm when they landed. He hadn’t thought that Michael would want to be with them there, but he nodded before realising what he was doing.
Once Em woke up she snuggled against him even more, chatting with Grace and Joe about their plans while playing with Isaac and his favourite toy cars on Dan’s chest. Dan didn’t say much, watching Em as she smiled and made vroom vroom noises while playing with Isaac. Every few minutes he’d run his fingers over her hair or kiss her forehead and she’d curl into him even more. It was rare for Em to let her guard down enough to cuddle him in front of everyone, but especially after Isaac after New Years.
They’d snuck inside at midnight to share a kiss while everyone else was watching the fireworks go off. He’d grabbed her hand to pull her into the kitchen for some privacy. He wanted to get a proper kiss from his girl and cuddle her and wish her a happy new year, so they were hidden in the kitchen with Em sitting on the counter and Dan standing between her legs sharing soft kisses. They were too caught up with each other and saying they needed to go back out but it was one more kiss. Then five more kisses. Then a hug. The bangs from the fireworks and Isaac’s tiny feet meant they never heard him coming or going from there.
It wasn’t until Michelle told Dan later that night how her son went running to her to tell her excitedly “I SAW UNCLE DANNY AND AUNTIE EMMY KISSING!”. He thought it was hilarious but Em was mortified and refused to go near him around his family again. He hadn’t seen them so close since that night, but Isaac didn’t say anything. Dan wasn’t sure if he’d forgotten or was happy playing with Em, but he was glad nothing was mentioned. He just listened to the giggles Isaac made while Em tickled him, looking across at baby Isabella in her mother’s arms and feeling that longing again.
He just wished he could stay on that plane forever, stop time and be there with his favourite people. He had no idea when he’d get to have the ten of them together in one room. He didn’t know when he’d get to see his parents, his sister, his brother in law and his niblings. Not knowing when the next time he and Em would pick up Isaac one afternoon to take him out was eating him. He wanted to turn up in the afternoon after Isaac’s nap, take him out to the playground and dinner before bringing him to the farm and spending the night with him. The lazy days the three of them had on the farm, Michelle making jokes about how it was their trial run to be parents to him and him warning his sister not to say it to Em.
But instead the plane went inevitably towards Perth, Dan looking out the window as they landed. It was sunny while they taxied to the private terminal, everyone stepping off as the luggage was unloaded. Finally he hugged his family goodbye, watching as Em did the same and gave everyone an extra hug. It was to the farm, to make a plan for the next day and hold his girl because he desperately needed something normal. Anything.
He had to keep it together for Em because if he started tearing up then she would, and she’d barely be able to stop. She hated crying in front of him, crying in front of Michael and Blake in the front seat would have been unthinkable for her. So when he sat in on the back seat he took her hand from her pocket, feeling the metal toy she was clutching. Em turned her hand up, showing him Isaac’s toy car.
“He told me I need to give it back next time I see him.” Her voice was low and Dan just held her hand for the entire drive, the music playing washing over them as they got closer to the farm and safety from everything happening in the world. When they pulled up he brought everyone’s suitcases into the living room before standing outside. Em went and stood beside him, looking out over the land and holding his hand.
Michael could feel that he wasn’t particularly wanted on the farm. He’d said it to Dan because they didn’t know what was going on or what would happen in the future. They were probably exposed, and if any of them got coronavirus the last thing he wanted to do was pass it onto his family. He’d never forgive himself if he hurt his Nana with it. So instead he was locking himself up with Blake, Dan, and Em.
The idea of quarantining in a house that had plenty of space and land around should have been fun, especially with two of his best mates and the girl he liked staying there. Except said girl and one of said best mates were…something. He had no idea if they were a couple, if it was friends with benefits or love or what. He didn’t know what they called each other - he’d never heard them say they loved each other at least - but they were something. And for the first time they weren’t hiding whatever they were anymore. They’d been subtle for as long as he’d known them but now he was seeing them fully acting like a couple. It felt like a nightmare.
He still remembered that morning in China when Dan was running late. Knocking on the door and getting no response so opening it and seeing Em moving in Dan’s lap. He hated that his brain wouldn’t forget about her little gasps and moans and he hated even more how much he wished he was in Dan’s place right there. He tried to avoid it, he tried to pretend that he didn’t remember how she looked. He tried not to want her but it was impossible. She was a bright light and he was a moth completely attracted to her and unable to look away. Every single time he saw her and Dan beside each other he wanted to be in Dan’s place and it fucking sucked. He wasn’t sure if he regretted saying yes to her travelling with them but he couldn’t say no. Blake immediately said yes, so he had to as well.
He wanted to be the one to make her laugh, who she came to when she was cold and wanted to steal a hoodie, the one offering her his arm so she would snuggle under it during long flights. He wanted to be the one making excuses to sneak into her hotel room and inventing reasons to see her. Which was stupid and ridiculous.
But he also thought Dan was out of his mind for what he was doing with Em. He knew perfectly well what they were doing in that drivers room on Thursday, and in countless other drivers rooms. He knew that they weren’t talking about the schedule and he told Dan as much, that he needed to focus on work and driving and getting a contract for next year. The problem was Dan’s reaction to it. He insisted that he knew what he was doing and to not say a word to Em about their conversation. Fine by him, he never wanted to mention to Em that he knew what she and Dan were doing.
He couldn’t believe when it was happening again that morning as he walked in. He knew when Em was the one who answered the phone that they were together and hiding so he went up to get them moving. It was normal for them to act like there was nothing between them even though everyone knew, but finding them like that was weird. Dan being unfocused and tired on the first full day of a race weekend wasn’t something that happened. He didn’t know why, but Blake filled him in when he asked how they were going to work out Em’s visa situation. The two of them were on the back porch in the mid afternoon sun, staring out across the horizon. Home for the foreseeable future.
“Why do you think Dan barely slept last night? He spent it getting the change for her visa submitted before the DHA was overwhelmed with visas. If it’s denied then I’ve worked out how we’re getting back to London.” Blake sounded completely calm and it was ridiculous. The full impact of his words hit Michael there. Dan would do anything for Em. He put his career second and her first, he was picking her before everything and everyone else. And if Michael was honest with himself, he’d been doing it for probably a year.
“So they’re actually a thing now?”
“They’ve been a thing for like a year and a half, mate. You were blind to not see it.” They were the same words that Blake had used in China when Michael went straight to his door to tell him what he’d seen. But even though he already knew it was happening, it hurt a bit more this time. “It’s their thing, as long as it makes them both happy it’s a good thing.”
Michael wanted to be the one who made her happy. He wanted to have a ‘thing’ with her. He wanted to hold her the way Dan did, an arm around her waist and her head curled against him as he held her. He wanted to get to kiss her forehead and whisper how he felt to her, to show Em off to the world as the woman he wanted. But he had to settle for walking back into the house with Blake, their original conversation over and the two quiet.
It wasn’t until they finally got into the house and were sorting their bags that it hit him. There were three bedrooms and three beds. Either he or Blake were going to sleep on one of the couches, neither of them would make Em have to sleep out there. It was probably fairer to leave it up to chance instead of arguing, so he turned with his fist outstretched.
“Rock, paper, scissors to see who gets the bed?” He asked, but Dan interrupted before Blake even had the chance to answer.
“There’s two spare rooms, don’t fight. Nobody’s stuck sleeping on the couch and everyone gets some privacy,” he explained as if it was completely normal. Michael watched as he went back to Em and kissed her forehead before speaking again. Em looked like she was holding herself together through sheer determination and desperation. “I’ll grab our bags and put them in our room, yeah? You’ve got your carry on and handbag there?”
“I’ve got them, I’ll take them in. Want some tea before we lie down? I think we’ve still got some left from Christmas. I’m gonna need to make a list of what we need at the supermarket tomorrow, maybe do some online orders. Make a list of what one you want me to pick up.” Her smile at Dan was captivating, Michael staring and wanting her to smile at him like that.
“We’ll figure that out later, but please make me some. Thanks, Babe.”
“I’ll bring it into you, you need sleep. Do either of you want some tea, boys?”
The only thing Michael could do was shake his head no, pretending to busy himself with his backpack. There was nothing that could pass through the knot in his throat right then.
He knew Dan was a picky fuck when it came to his tea. He always insisted that nobody could do it like Em could, the three of them made jokes about how it was because she was British. But beyond all of that he never expected to see them sharing a room so openly and in front of people. They weren’t hiding and sneaking, they weren’t pretending they were just friends. They were like an honest to God couple who had been together for years.
As he watched Dan walk down the hallway to the master bedroom, Em heading into the kitchen and Blake getting his stuff together to put his things in one of the guest rooms it hit Michael like a punch to the gut. He had made a huge mistake telling Dan he was staying at the farm. But now there was nothing he could do.
