#memorie.txt #once you’ve read more you’re more willing to admit that you love a kinda poorly written book #by god i love jackaby. the writing style is a solid 3/5 and the plot stuff is cheesy as hell. #you get a better frame of reference for ‘this book requires an award’ style of good #and a ‘god this is so my dumb little niche that scratches all those weird little itches nobody else has’ style of good #one of my fav series is the ghost and the goth!! is it good?? i don’t know if i’d go that far!! #is it fun and does it make me think of trysi / chryzure stuff??? yes :) #i’m beginning to wonder abt ppl rabid abt their fav books. anyway this one person was losing their shit over ppl liking apollo #and aurora and i’m an aurora shooter but i digress #they were foaming at the mouth and im like Well. its a little not that serious . #he is letters on a page. and also mostly irrelevant to the story as a whole so im kinda confused as to why ppl feel so strongly abt him #it’s funny because most of my complaints stem from an outside pov #where i critique the worldbuilding / plot work / character writing and its inconsistencies #whereas ppl assume im encouraging villainy irl. it is quite seriously more that the villainy is unmotivated #or otherwise poorly done. i love to hate a good villain if the proper legwork is put into it #because i like observing how others work their craft!!! #but my irritation with stephanie is that she doesn’t work her craft well. it’s shoddy craftsmanship full of retcons or #convenience required for plot that otherwise hold no reasoning in the story #and i can admit that i find the series unsatisfying because it’s marketed as a romance (the romance had little chemistry that could be #understood by anyone that’s not straight. straight romances are always laziest because it’s the ‘norm’ so that equates to chem) #and also it was marketed as having plot when rlly the ‘plot’ was trying to put these characters in weird chemistry-less situations together #so yeah i’ll complain abt the villains being jealous shallow archetypes when it could’ve had depth. #i’ll complain abt a lot. but in the end it’s a silly basic ya romance series that isn’t anything unique #most unique stories will not be found on booktok. i’m sorry #i can show you the beautiful world of horror novels though! #or weird lil 80s fantasy novels that are actually quite long that my dad likes showing me #truly no romance novel will be better than the darkangel trilogy though.. that is what stephanie wanted to write. #but that’s lightning in a bottle ithink. #okay anyway. good night. i worked a long day and i have appts in the morning

Ugh, anon, that phrase is death to my ears.

Generally, I do not recommend YA books as a genre. I know I talk about HP and Twilight here, but as a genre it's not something I can recommend/recommend without some ulterior, bizarre, reason such as Midnight Sun being a pile of insanity every other sentence such that it's essentially American Psycho.

However, if you're going to make me pick, here's the shortlist off the top of my head.

(The shortlist being books that probably, generally, aren't really YA but got stuffed into the genre for some reason or another).

This was a little string of YeXie Week ficlets based on word prompts. Friend Ritualist* and I had been batting around some ideas for a Plant Witch Xie'er fic in the DMs and I thought I'd use YeXie week to play around with the character voices/world a little and see how I liked writing those two. I had a lovely time writing it, but semi-connected short ficlets where the rimming is (just barely) off-screen are a hard sell. Also I left it marked incomplete for a long time thinking I might go back and finish out the week's prompts, so I'm sure it got passed over by the very wise people who don't read WIPs. No regrets, I like knowing Plant Witch Xier'er is out there even if he'll probably never really get written.

The Desert Dreams of a River, Darkangel Trilogy, Aeriel/Irrylath, Erin/OFC, 2019.

Yuletide fic! With the hit count you expect for a Yuletide genfic based on one of your formative pieces of circa-1982 fiction about a girl trying to reform a vampire while they live on the terraformed moon. Written in a frantic haze just short of deadline, if I recall, as I'd started a different angle on it that didn't quite work. I'm not saying this story was just an excuse to get Erin a wife, but it was sort of that, since the prompt didn't really allow for Erin to wife Aeriel. (But she SHOULD HAVE. Let Aeriel Have A Husband And A Wife.) I loved these books so much. Unfortunately something must be really fucked with the licensing because only the third of the trilogy was available as an ebook at the time and that doesn't seem to have changed? Pick up a hard copy of the first book if you ever see one, though.

Another little tidbit of a fic as an exercise in character voice again and also how much I liked how much the show likes their smoking scenes. Look. I'm a person of a certain age who smoked like a chimney as a teenager and into my early twenties, and I can't help the programming that got into my bones about the inherent eroticism of sharing a cigarette. (lolsob, high five to my fellow Thai BL nerds, how are we all doing this week with the one-two- punch of the DFF shotgunning scene and the new 4 minutes teaser? it's fine, i'm fine.) I wrote this thinking that next I would write some RaySand smut and then didn't because the whirl of Thai BL fandom pulled me on to something else, but at some point I want to rewatch this show and may still write it then because it fed my FirstKhao shipper heart so well.

dizzy in your wake, Nirvana in Fire, Changsu/Jingyan, 2020?

I'm not the one who said "what if Mei Changsu were a were-octopus," that was a series of amazing twitter threads by @astronicht. But people just KEPT sending it to me because I am known to think octopus content is very cool and also to be a Mei Changsu Girlie, and eventually a couple of friends shook me until 600 words of ridiculousness came out. What surprises me is not that this one has few kudos, but that it has >10 kudos at all. I would say this is the most niche and silly thing I've written except I've also written MDZS/Jupiter Ascending fusion fic, so let's not pretend I have any dignity left. Written in 2020 but it didn't get posted until later because I don't usually post things this short. At some point I was in one of those "it's an ARCHIVE, we should put ALL THE THINGS THERE" moods and slapped a few NiF ficlets written for the group chat up there.

A Second Dose, Hannibal, Bev/Freddie, 2016

This was the thing where you write an odd little rarepair and it's so much fun you come back and do a sequel you hadn't meant to write. I'd written Bev/Freddie before and then when a Hannibal rarepair fest came around I was like, hey, what if I did that again. Possibly I just wanted to revisit the cat named after Rosalind Franklin that I'd made up for Bev.

not the submitter but: the third book of the darkangel trilogy leans more into the sci fi elements than the first two. some of the sci fi things that show up throughout the series, especially in the third book: set on a moon (implied our moon, but never explicitly stated); several characters have artificially constructed/genetically modified bodies; discussion of separating hydrogen and oxygen from water to create fuel for a spaceship.

it does also have some fantasy elements though! (spinning thread out of emotions, lots of things about souls & hearts, etc). Personally I think it's the sort of book/series that could go on both blogs if you were so inclined, like gideon the ninth did.

thank you both for the additional info — I think the moon thing in itself might not be enough to convince me, but it sounds like there are other sci-fi elements that I’d forgotten or that I didn’t fully register at the time, so I’m willing to go with it!

mostly the bookended bits! i know where i want to go in the actual “story” part, but the way jacks comes to remember his past + the way he reacts to it in the present is still a bit murky. plus, i want to include something about azure remembering everything all along, but… that’s kinda hard for me to figure out rn.

aglow by the rare occasions — just look at these lyrics… look at them!!! it’s vv chryzure slowly falling in love despite both of them knowing the time is running out… autumn is slipping into winter… but for now, they’ll set the night aglow ;;;;;;

only by ry x — chryzure romance as a religion, one where chrysi’s aware of the fact that this will slip from her fingers (viewing herself as a ghost, “cut me like a rose” AZURE TURNING INTO FLOWERS…) just vibe-wise…. yeah.

lava lamp (specifically the mree cover) — i’ve already posted the lyrics, but. this is so applicable for azure… the way he makes a deal with the stars so he and chrysi won’t be separated,,, and it doesn’t bother him in the slightest that he’ll have to die in that moment… so long as he can be with chrysi, because he can’t handle her leaving without him. they are soulmates <//3

29. Books or series or movies influenced your writing style the most?

this is a very good question, and tbh, this style of writing for this particular wip in question is different than normal! so this one—i’m actually reading the books that inspired this one at this very moment. the darkangel trilogy by meredith ann pierce is the perfect fairy tale / folklore feel and the sense of magnetism despite not knowing why. plus, i’m going to reread the night circus by erin morgenstern since a) it has that longing, slow fall into dedication and adoration type of romance, and b) it’s written in present tense lol.
