Robert Pickton (1949-?)
Tumblr media
Robert Pickton, also known as The Pig Farmer Killer, is a Canadian serial killer convicted of the murders of 6 women. He was charged with an additional 20 murders but these charges were stayed by the Crown in 2010. Pickton and his brother David owned and operated a farm in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. He was described as a “pretty quiet guy” who worked in a “creepy-looking place”, whose behaviour was often attention-seeking. The brothers began to let the farm fall into disrepair and registered a charity called the Piggy Palace Good Times Society. The charity claimed to “organise, coordinate, manage and operate special events, functions, dances, shows and exhibitions on behalf of service organisations, sports organisations and other worthy groups”. The events included parties/raves featuring Vancouver sex workers in a converted slaughterhouse on the farm; these events attracted up to 2,000 people. In March 1997, Pickton was charged with the attempted murder of sex worker Wendy Lynn Eistetter. He stabbed her several times during a struggle at the farm – she told police that Pickton handcuffed her, but she escaped after being stabbed; she then disarmed him and stabbed him with his own weapon. Pickton was treated, arrested and released on bail. The charge was later dismissed.
Over a 3-year period, farm worker William Hiscox noticed that women who visited the farm often went missing. On February 6, 2002, police executed a search warrant for illegal firearms at the property. The Picktons were arrested and, based on what they had seen, police obtained a second warrant to search the farm as part of the BC Missing Women Investigation. Personal items that were later found to belong to the missing women were discovered at the farm. The following day, Robert Pickton was charged with weapons offences. He was released, and kept under surveillance. On February 22, Robert Pickton was arrested and charged with 2 counts of first-degree murder – those of Sereena Abotsway and Mona Wilson. 2 weeks later, 3 more charges were added, for the murders of Jacqueline McDonell, Diane Rock, and Heather Bottomley. A 6th charge for the murder of Andrea Joesbury was handed out, followed by a 7th for Brenda Wolfe. On September 20, 4 more charges were added for the killings of Georgina Papin, Helen Hallmark, Jennifer Furminger and Patricia Johnson. A further 4 charges for the murders of Heather Chinnock, Tanya Holyk, Sherry Irving, and Inga Hall were handed down on October 3, bringing the total to 15. This was the largest serial killer investigation in Canadian history. On May 26, 2005, Pickton received 12 more charges for the murders of Cara Ellis, Andrea Borhaven, Debra Lynne Jones, Marnie Frey, Tiffany Drew, Kerry Koski, Sarah de Vries, Cynthia Feliks, Angela Jardine, Wendy Crawford, Diana Melnick, and a Jane Doe, bringing the total number of first-degree murder charges to 27. More excavations at the farm continued through November of 2003. Forensic analysis was difficult because the bodies were left to decompose, or were eaten by the pigs on the farm. During the early stages of excavation, forensic anthropologists brought in equipment which included two 50 foot conveyer belts and sifters to find traces of human remains. In 2004 the government revealed that Pickton may have ground up human flesh and mixed it with pork that was sold to the public; another claim was made that he fed bodies directly to his pigs.
The trial of Robert Pickton began on January 30, 2006. He pled not guilty to 27 counts of first-degree murder in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. One count was rejected for lack of evidence. On August 9, Justice Williams split the charges into one group of 6 counts and another group of 20 counts. The trial proceeded with the 6 counts, with the other 20 ultimately being stayed in 2010. It is believed that the 6 charges the Crown proceeded with had the best chance for prosecution and the least burden on the jury. On January 22, 2007, Pickton faced first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Frey, Abotsway, Papin, Joesbury, Wolfe and Wilson. At this point, the media ban on the case was lifted and some of the case’s shocking details were heard – skulls cut in half with hands and feet stuffed inside; the remains of a victim discovered in a trash bag; part of a jawbone and teeth found near the slaughterhouse; and a .22 calibre revolver with a dildo attached, covered with his victim’s DNA. During the trial, lab staff testified that around 80 unidentified DNA profiles (roughly half male and half female) were found on pieces of evidence. An associate of Pickton’s told how Pickton mentioned killing sex workers by handcuffing and strangling them, then bleeding and gutting them before feeding them to pigs. On December 9, 2007, Pickton was found not guilty on 6 counts of first-degree murder, but of second-degree murder. After reading 18 victim impact statement, Justice James Williams sentenced Robert Pickton to life with no possibility of parole for 25 years (the maximum punishment for second-degree murder). In passing the sentence, Williams said: “Mr. Pickton’s conduct was murderous and repeatedly so. I cannot know the details but I know this: What happened to them was senseless and despicable.”

BIG OLE BUGS MAKING A COMEBACK
In 1997, a movie entitled “Starship Troopers” was released. This movie involved Earth being attacked by giant “bug” aliens, and humans engaging in intergalactic warfare to combat the violence. Although the bug in the photo resembles something that might attack Earth, they’re completely harmless. Additionally, rather than being battled by Mobile Infantry, these insects are being rehabilitated by Australian scientists in an attempt to be reintroduced into the wild.
The Dryococelus australis, or “tree lobster”, used to roam freely around Lord Howe Island, just east of Australia, masquerading as pieces of wood. Fishermen would use these 12 cm long stick insects for bait, as they were about as long as any other bait-fish. However, in 1918, a British supply ship was evacuated on the island after being run ashore. During the nine-day repair of the vessel, a handful of stow-away black rats made their way onto the island from the ship. These furry fellas quickly discovered the tasty tree lobsters. After two years of these rats roaming and grazing, the tree lobsters presumably went extinct.
None were seen after 1920. That is until climbers scaling Ball’s Pyramid (a small but tall rock, near the island), in the 1960’s, reported seeing “recently dead” corpses of the insects. Due to the creatures’ nocturnal nature and a lack of desire to bug hunt in the dark, no follow up happened. In 2001 David Priddel and Nicholas Carlile, two Australian scientists, decided to pursue this follow up. Patches of potentially-life-supporting vegetation on the rock were visible to the men from the water. The men scaled 500 feet up the vertical face and found nothing but a few crickets. Upon their disappointed decent down the rock, the men saw what appeared to be fresh droppings of a large insect. The origin of this poop sparked curiosity and inspired a nighttime voyage to investigate. Carlile and a local ranger, Dean Hiscox scaled the rock during the dark of night to see if they could catch the owner of the poop on a midnight stroll. The men reached the bushy plant believed to be the home and saw two gigantic, shiny bodies. Beneath them were more of their friends, 24 tree lobsters total.
A few more extensive searches over the course of a couple years proved the insects on the Pyramid to be the last ones.
Logistics of the insects’ travel are still unknown, however theories exist. Another mystery is how the community thrived off of just one patch of plants. The only thing important at the moment to the scientists was the unpredictability and rarity of these bugs’ existence. The scientists immediately pushed for protection and a breeding program in order to continue the future of the tree lobsters.
The next step was to persuade the Australian government into allowing the transition of the animals. Due to the fragile state of their existence, the subject was debated until 2003. On Valentine’s Day that year the team went to retrieve four of the insects to be brought back to labs. One man received a pair which unfortunately died within two weeks of his care. The last two, named “Adam” and “Eve” were taken to the Melbourne Zoo, under the care of Patrick Honan.
Reproduction was successful after a few hiccups involving Eve almost dying, amongst other things. The population is expanding and now efforts are being made to return the insects to their original home on Lord Howe Island. However, the island is still running with the rats from before. The prominent idea to combat the rats is a mass extermination. Unfortunately, Lord Howe Island also has a human population that might not appreciate bugs that look like something out of a sci-fi movie crawling all around where they live.
There are a lot of factors right now regarding the future of these insects. However, the past is interesting and the present is fascinating. These tree lobsters have proven to be an interesting rediscovery and continue to captivate scientists and outdoorsmen like me.

"It's kinda interesting that David Hiscox has decided to close his blog, XYZ, at this juncture.
Another UniMelb 'classical liberal' who went full nazi, Mr Hiscox is a case study in middle-class 'radikalisation'.
He remains completely unapologetic."

Journaliste : Julien Marsault.
« Certes, Apple soutient l’innovation.

Cyber Daily: Remote Work Triggers Shifts in How Business Safeguard Corporate Systems
June 23, 2020 9: 16 am ET. |. WSJ Pro.
Hi. WSJ Pro’s David Uberti and Catherine Stupp take a look at innovations that are supposed to keep companies safe from hackers when staff members work remotely. Some tools, such as fortified user authentication methods, are expected to remain in location as companies resume, according to their short article in the most recent Journal Reports series on cybersecurity. Also, check out associated articles in the report.
Likewise today: Cops submits from 200 companies and information-sharing centers are released online; and more than 12,000 patients are caught up in a breach as a Massachusetts pain clinic.
Pandemic Security
Business battle cybersecurity threats of having more remote workers. Hackers see working-from-home staff members as powerlessness allowing entry into company networks, sending out security chiefs into overdrive to put protections in location.
Home workers might also be more susceptible to phishing rip-offs that open up access to company networks due to the fact that they might feel less security-conscious outside the workplace.
VPNs: Virtual private networks aim to keep information private even when it is sent out over public networks. However some workers have not used the technology prior to. Companies have to explain how to run it and advise workers to be vigilant about using it. British e-commerce business Made.com’s VPN use doubled after lockdown orders went into place in March, so Chief Information Gatekeeper Paul McCourt ditched physical keys staff members utilized to visit. The USB secret was cumbersome and a potential security threat if workers lost it, he states.
No trust: This authentication model prioritizes verifying users’ identities and gadgets at different checkpoints with passwords and other authenticators. The architecture is developed to discover attacks by individuals who have actually currently made it inside networks, including dissatisfied existing or former employees.
