cryptpad review !
in depth review of cryptpad as someone who is using it as a replacement for google docs because i don't trust google and i dipped the moment i heard "fully integrated ai" 🤭
we're scoring cryptpad on a scale of 1-10 based on its interface, features, accessibility, ease of access, and storage.
scoring criteria:
usability 10/10 : has a lot of formatting options, while also being easy on the eyes. offers features that allow the software to be easily customizable to each user's needs and preferences, or features that make writing easier, without being overwhelming.
accessibility 10/10 : includes accessibility options for eye strain/dyslexia/etc like a proper dark mode and dyslexia friendly fonts, while also having an easy-to-navigate layout, and a mobile app that is equally easy to use without losing its features. doesn't take a long time to load, and is easy to adapt to as a new user.
storage 10/10 : provides a free account with very high or unlimited storage. the documents and files you create don't take up a ton of space, and you have options for upgrading storage if applicable.
what is cryptpad?
similar to how docs operates on desktop, cryptpad is a website-based file drive and software. it's free to create an account, and offers a selection of different kinds of files you can make. here's a list of features i think are notable, first:
there's 10 different of kinds of files you can create, including even code documents! cryptpad also allows you to create as many folders as you like, upload pre-existing files or folders, and even allows you to add links to your drive if you have links you want to save.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
cryptpad always will open a new document or a pre-existing one in a new tab! when making a new document it automatically gives you the options to name it, password-lock it, set a destruction date.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's diversity in your sharing options: you can toggle and change the rules for the kinds of access people get to your shared documents!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
somewhat on the same topic, there's access settings and details you can review and tweak at any time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also you can change your account's display name in your settings LMAO
Tumblr media
there's a chat option on documents for when you're working on something with other people in the upper right corner of your screen!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the actual scoring:
usability: 7/10
formatting your documents isn't terribly versatile on cryptpad, but it offers to you that you can make as many folders and nest as many of them as you want, while also making its layout and navigation simple. there isn't a ton of super fancy features in the rich text documents, but i enjoy that, to be honest! keeps it simple.
Tumblr media
accessibility: 7.5/10
tragically, you cannot change the background of cryptpad files, and there's no mobile app :( if i could i would. they do, at least, offer a light or dark mode? i have dark mode selected of course, but it um... yeah the background is always just that white 😬 unfortunately. they do have basic font options, but personally, my love for cryptpad's accessibility lies in the fact you can make as many folders and nested folders as you damn well please, and the drive screen is SO easy to navigate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
storage: 10/10
1GB for free, to start with? sir, i have 52 files in this drive (all rich text) and i have used 0.03 of that !! which, if i did my math correctly (debatable), that means i'll need over 5 thousand files to fill up that 1GB. AND it's upgradable, without the upgrade price being my soul? you can even donate just for funsies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
overall rating: 8/10
personally, i love cryptpad! i do wish you could change the document background color, and i wish that i had more formatting option like line spacing, but it's a good iteration of what i want in a writing program! i'd definitely recommend if you like supporting freelance guys doin their own thing while also not struggling to figure out how the fuck a writing software works.

Do you guys (gender-neutral) know of a good alternative to Google Docs? I've been using it for years and I want to move my writing off of it. Because Google is planning to start this, and I don't want that to happen to my writing. Even if it's in a really rough state.
I should also explain my current writing system (as of August 2023). This is extremely simplified by the way, also there is some overlap between different programs/apps.
~My current writing system~
Google Docs: Online backup of drafts, random lore tidbits, practice drafts, chapter outlines, story arc outlines, character sheets, basic worldbuilding, etc. The bulk of my writing stuff happens here.
LibreOffice: Everything that Google Docs does but offline
Pluot: Lore, detailed worldbuilding, character sheets, story arc outlines, chapter outlines
Notion: Visualizing timelines, compiling everything into a "wiki"
Also, just to let you know, I'm on a pretty strict budget. So I can't afford the super-expensive programs or subscription services. I'd prefer to use something that's free, or super cheap.

Would actually love to hear about that time you tried to degoogle your phone! Did you replace the OS with one without all the G trackers or dis you just turned them all off?
The short answer to this is that I have a phone with GrapheneOS installed, which is an OS that strips not just the trackers but all Google services out of the phone. It also has various security upgrades built in. You do have to have a Pixel to run it because they're more secure and get updates faster than other Android models, but you could always get one secondhand to avoid giving Google your money.
Graphene has an option to run Google services in a sandbox so you can still use their apps if you really want to, but my main profile doesn't have any of that installed on it. While I'm glad I've moved away from relying so much on Google, it is damn near impossible to do most things other people do with their phones.
I don't get push notifications (because most apps use Google Firebase for notes), I can't use most social media or streaming apps, and the few social apps that do work often have annoying popups complaining that Google services aren't installed. If I originally signed into something with my Google account, I can't use it on my phone. Anything I bought on the Google Play store I no longer have access to. My camera sucks even though Pixel camera hardware is pretty good because I don't have access to the Google algorithms that support the camera in their app. A lot of the FOSS apps I use to replace Google apps aren't bad, but they're missing some of the most useful features Google has. I never really thought about how often I use Maps ratings to help pick restaurants and such until that option was gone. Tumblr works with no issues, though!
I do have a separate profile on my phone where I enabled sandboxed Google Services so i could still have Maps and my work Gmail (and Webtoons) but I try very hard not to use it and to try and use FOSS alternatives. Despite all the inconveniences, I don't think I'm going to give up and go back to running Google services. I spend less time on Youtube and Instagram, I have fewer useless phone apps that primarily just waste my time, and as an avid Big Tech Hater™ it's important to me that I keep trying to cut as much of it out of my life as possible. I'm thinking about putting together a more extensive guide to de-Googling (and other tech companies) over the course of the year as I try to transition further away from big tech surveillance, and I'll probably post about that here if it happens?

writing application suggestion: I use evernote and I really enjoy it, it’s pretty similar to google docs but personally I prefer keeping my fanfic separate from my google profile 😬 it’s free, and if you download the desktop or mobile apps you can use it offline
Oh! Neat I'll look into it. I think I had it years ago as a notes app and remember it wasn't so good at longer writing. I was sort of thinking of moving to Zoho, which seems to have similar word processing capabilities as docs as well as the offline and syncing functions

Google has agreed to pay $391.5 million to settle a privacy lawsuit filed by a coalition of attorneys general from 40 U.S. states.
The settlement shows that the U.S. attorneys general discovered while investigating a 2018 Associated Press article that the search giant misled Android users and tracked their locations since at least 2014 even when they thought location tracking was disabled.
While Android users were misled into thinking disabling the "Location History" in the device's settings would disable location tracking, another account setting—turned on by default and named "Web & App Activity"—enabled the company to collect, store and use the customers' personally identifiable location data.
Today's settlement also requires Google to introduce more user-friendly account controls and limits the company's use and storage of some types of location data.
Google will also have to be transparent with its users regarding its location data tracking and collection practices, having to show additional information when location-related account settings are toggled and display detailed info about what data it harvests and how it's used.
"The company's online reach enables it to target consumers without the consumer's knowledge or permission," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said on Monday.
"However, the transparency requirements of this settlement will ensure that Google not only makes users aware of how their location data is being used, but also how to change their account settings if they wish to disable location-related account settings, delete the data collected and set data retention limits."
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) also announced in August that it fined Google $60 million for also misleading and collecting location data belonging to Australian Android users for almost two years, between January 2017 and December 2018, using the same approach.
As the ACCC revealed, Google has taken remedial steps to address the issues that led to these fines by 20 December 2018, with users no longer being shown misleading information suggesting that pausing location history stops collecting data about their location.
In January 2022, France's National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) also fined Google $170 million for infringing on the freedom of consent of internet users by making it difficult to reject website tracking cookies with the option being hidden behind multiple clicks.
The company was also fined $11.3 million for aggressive data collection in November 2021, €220 million for favoring its services to the disadvantage of competitors in June 2021, $1.7 billion for anti-competitive practices in online advertising in March 2019, and $2.72 billion for abusing its dominant market position to tweak search results in June 2017.

Morning rituals
If you want to check out my morning rituals, then you better be prepared to get up early. Real early. I get up at 3. 30 AM. You may have heard of the proverb, The early bird catches the worm.Well, if I were a bird, I would have got the job of waking up the worms. This waking up early is a bad habit I picked up as a child. I come from a family of Army and Police officers. Do not remember a day…

i really wish grapheneos would support the fairphone, i understand why they don't but tbh there aren't any mobile OSes i trust as much. tbf im not awfully familiar with the other degoogled OSes & once this phone gives out i may have to do some research into degoogled OSes that are compatible with fairphones. or just give in and get the newest pixel for grapheneos, it has an 8 year warranty now anyway so it should last a lot longer than my current phone has lasted, but ofc that's really unideal idk

🚨⚠️ATTENTION FELLOW WRITERS⚠️🚨
If you use Google Docs for your writing, I highly encourage you to download your work, delete it from Google Docs, and transfer it to a different program/site, unless you want AI to start leeching off your hard work!!!
I personally have switched to Libre Office, but there are many different options. I recommend checking out r/degoogle for options.
Please reblog to spread the word!!
