Something fun to do when watching D&D Honor Among Thieves is randomly remember that in a very disconnected, fictional way, everything the characters are saying is improvised, and then realize how well it’s written with that in mind because everything from the random to-the-side dialogue to the big monologues DOES sound like something that would happen at your table and just. appreciate. how well this movie’s made.

i think it's so incredibly cool that Joel's and Impulse/Bdubs' s10 bases are themed similarly enough that when theyre done they're going to blend beautifully into a really varied and sonewhat realistic cyberpunk city. Joel's base at the top of the mountain feels very old money wealthy district, with all the colours and light and beautifully appointed apartments and little cafés and rooftop gardens. It leads down the hill to Impulse's more industrial CBD with big warehouse-type buildings, everythings in slightly worse shape but you can tell it's gonna feel like a bustling city center with some class and economic variations in its retail/residential areas. Bdub's section is the most run down, the most beat up, the most dystopian feeling, a little seedy, almost slum-like and it's at the outskirts of the city. You can stand on the top apartment balcony and look up the mountain at the bright and shining sector at the tip, just peeking out of the fog. Im actually beside myself with excitement for how these two bases are gonna turn out

if you’ve been texting them for 72827 days and they haven’t so much as set a time to meet you in person (learned the hard way that I’m no longer okay w overextended “texting” stages), if you guys have been talking for like a month and there’s no indication from them that they want to be exclusive w you (not a hard and fast rule but in most cases that’s a pretty weird delay), if you’re the one who’s initiating most of your conversations w them (without which they would literally never speak to you), if they only meet up w you based on their schedule/what’s convenient for them and them alone. i usually hate tiktok but the whole “if you’re confused, that means they don’t like you” thing is so true. a person who likes you will make it known by caring about you & checking in & putting in effort. they will not leave any room for you to be confused bc they wouldn’t want to run the risk of losing you in translation.

#also important to delineate is the concept of they don’t like you ENOUGH* #someone can like enough to hang w you but not enough to actually date you #don’t confuse someone liking you for them liking u enough

I recently heard about a 400-year-old tree in a nearby village, which made me want to estimate the age of the big lime tree behind my house. I measured the circumference at my height then divided by Pi to get the diametre then multiplied by the growth factor for this species—and I learnt that my lime tree is about 255-260 years-old! It was born in the 1760s... I also went and measured some of my beech trees and the oldest ones are ~190 years-old, which makes sense as it’s the age of the house. I’m not sure why this lime tree is so much older than all the other trees on this land, but it makes me want to give it a little plaque, maybe one that says “I was 25 years-old during the French revolution.”

#crawling along #i know my land used to be a forest until the 1820s when most of the trees were cut to create pastures #beech trees were then planted around each pasture to delineate it #then in the 1960s or 70s the farm was downsized and all the pastures except two were abandoned and left to rewild as they pleased #so the trees around my house are 50-60yo at most save for the beech trees enclosing the younger woods like sentinels #i'm guessing the 1820s owners preserved a couple of the pre-existing trees in each pasture to provide shade for the animals? #and the other(s) have been cut since #whatever the reason i'm glad this one lime tree was left alone to live its life!

Whenever people get mad about the literal discussion of narrative in the context of media analysis, there's always this undercurrent of "Oh? So you want a story with themes and structure and conflict and resolution instead of my booktok/fanfic-approved headcanons? Do you think you're better than me?" And I just want to clear something up: yes. Without a doubt.

#people really out here like must a story have conflict? #and the answer is yes actually it must. hope this helps. #tbh i really do think people dislike criticism on the basis of basic story principles because it's so fundamental #if you don't like a specific character or event people can chalk that up to personal preferences #(or bigotry - whether or not that is actually the case) #but if you actually can delineate the structural flaws they need to have a real argument and that takes effort #unless they take a position of what if I like that the story is poorly crafted. which. ok. live in that dumpster then.
