They are (encrypted voice done by Chrissy, Encrypting Genius saying Communal Toilets)," Banana Ice said.

"No one wants to hear the Truth," Penn said. "People are talking about the CDPCP Captain Planet American shielding that separates the jabbed from the unjabbed. They're real. They're coming and coming fast! This is not a joke. This is real. I repeat. This is real. Banana Ice said correctly that Austria Australia has started to crack down on us unjabbed. They have come door-to-door asking for papers just like the Germans did to the (encrypted voice by Chrissy, Encrypting Genius saying JuJubes) back in the 1940s on Earth and God Knows Where Else. Then if you don't have papers, they take you away to some throwaway galaxy where no one can find you."

"IT'S UNAMERICAN! IT'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL! PATRIOTS MUST RESIST!" Blinky, Count Vanilla, Banana Ice, and Bruce Ice shouted.

Bears shouted in the background.

Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas spoke wildly in French. She spoke in English. "I'm just a messenger! I did not write these news!"

Penn spoke, "Read John 3:16. Read Psalm 91! That's what will save you! Stay strong. Do not get jabbed. Humble yourself. You know better than to take the (encrypted voice done by Chrissy, Encrypting Genius saying PLAGUE MEDICINE)! Amen!"

The screen switched to Chrissy and her glorious titles. A screen was scrolling with her titles. "Thank you, Penn, Banana and Bruce Ice, Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas, whoa! That name should be a title! Count Vanilla, Blinky, and last but not least, Prince Oliver, Werewolf of the United Planets for your news today. More will come after this short break."

A video of Chrissy, her glorious titles, and her 46 wolf pups playing played for five minutes as an intermission. It was still entirely too fucking hot for her to wear the wig.

The camera then showed Chrissy, submissively and dutifully our reporter standing in front of a photo of Mars still without her wig.

"Hello Everybody, as I am forced to say on every broadcast in case you aren't informed, I'm Chrissy, babybaby, baby baby hit me baby one more time, not Aguilera. Ugh. My glorious title changes every minute, I swear. My Dom is a cruel jokester. But," Chrissy.... spoke before she started. "Let us get on with our next broadcast. Jaybird, a floating head on Mars-"

Banana Ice was beginning to crack up. Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas elbowed him hard with her right elbow.

"Ahem, yes," Chrissy, babybaby space reporter on live television said before she was trying not to laugh. "Jayhead from Mars would like to tell us about a new and upcoming screenplay author who is a lot like me, not he or it but maybe something in between. Jayhead! Excuse me Jaybird, how are you doing?"

Jaybird's bald floating face with thin brown eyebrows, hazel eyes, a distinct nose, and small lips was staring at us in front of a giant intergalactic "solar system" green screen. "I'm great. Thank you, Chrissy-," Jaybird said with a Cleveland, Ohio accent.

At this point, Bruce Ice busted up laughing. Banana Ice had completely lost it and started to hyperventilate while laughing. He was falling out of his chair. Count Vanilla stared at the camera and looked disturbed. Blinky looked confused and wanted to know what happened to the rest of Jaybird's body. Penn was smiling and suppressing laughter.

"Excuse me. What's so funny? I haven't even told the story yet," Jaybird asked.

Chrissy, baby master of laughter suppression said with a grin, "Excuse me, Banana and Bruce Ice! Do you MIND? Some of us..." she said as she involuntarily giggled. "Would like to hear the news today. Could you please be quiet?"

Banana Ice was rolling on the floor while his chest heaved as he laughed. He was wearing black dress pants and those godawful ridiculous banana rocket shoes. It's dangerous to only spend a minute shopping for new shoes. The shoes were firing off and making him scoot across the floor. Bruce Ice was falling out of his chair laughing. Penn was throwing his head back and laughing. Blinky and Count Vanilla were laughing hysterically as they watched Banana Ice jet across the floor as he laughed. Prince Oliver, Werewolf of the United Planets was laughing sheerly out of disbelief.

Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas was trying to talk over the laughter. "This is why you don't wear rocket shoes in a news broadcast. What a mockery of news journalism. Or was that his point?" Even she was trying not to laugh.

"I have no idea," Chrissy, baby giggles said as she was giggling. "I think that clip's going viral."

Jaybird's floating head was hysterically laughing. "Wow! That's the embodiment of space right there! Sci-Fi, eat your heart out. And here I thought robots writing movie scripts was hilarious. Shoot, the best form of entertainment is buying your children rocket shoes and making them laugh hysterically to see what happens."

Chrissy, baby mama giggles stickles crackalacka cracked up. "Yes. Wolf pups with rocket shoes flying around would be something," she said with more laughter. "Whoever he bought those shoes from is going to have a massive increase in sales."

Banana Ice was trying to calm down and turn his shoes off. "Sorry! I just don't understand what's going on right now."

"Does anybody?" Chrissy, babybaby with more questions than answers asked.

"I doubt it, but this upcoming AI script-" Jaybird was trying to say before he was rudely interrupted by Banana Ice's continued laughter and scooting across the floor with rocket shoes.

Seriously, why the fuck did he buy those?

"I need to mute that screen. I can't report like this," Chrissy baby drama queen said as she walked off the set for a second. "Zachary Girrafinakis, mute screen 1 please!"

Zachary Giraffinakis, my newly hired slave who happened to be good at working cameras, looked exactly like the American actor Zach Gallifinakis. But he was behind the scenes and was born and raised on the Green Planet. We really do live in an alternate reality. I allowed Chrissy, babywolfgirl bitch mama news reporter with 46 hungry pups to borrow him for this breaking news report. Zachary Giraffinakis kindly muted the screen.

But Banana Ice was mute laughing and trying to shut off his shoes with not much success. Bruce Ice was beating the desk and heaving with mute laughter. Blinky was crying as he blink-laughed. Count Vanilla was mute growling and mute laughing. Penn was wiping his eyes while mute laughing.

Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas was mute speaking. The closed caption said, "You have to excuse my son. His brain is malfunctioning. I don't know why it happened. He got that faulty brain mechanic from his papa."

Prince Oliver, Werewolf of the United Planets was mute laughing and wiping his eyes with his tie.

"Thank you, Zachary Giraffinakis, now we can continue this news broadcast. I'm telling you. Today's broadcast alone has been one big news blooper. It goes to show that the events of the multiverse truly have begun to mock the multiverse itself. Perplexing," Chrissy, amused babygirl newscaster spoke.

"Yes. Truly. And the AI movie script writer actually touches on that," Jaybird said with a chuckle. "Excuse me. I'm still trying to get over a ridiculous-looking bear scooting... hahaha across the floor with rocket shoes. I mean, who wears rocket shoes to a press conference? That's a great screenplay idea for the AI script writer! Haha! I have no idea if he wrote one like that yet."

"No idea," Chrissy, babygirl Wolf Mama still in disbelief said. "I don't think I'm ever going to get over this traumatic experience." She was giggling.

"Me neither. Someone has GOT to make a Sci-Fi movie with malfunctioning rocket shoes during a news broadcast. If you're watching this Bouregard, you need to calibrate the transcripts from this broadcast and MAKE THAT INTO A MOVIE!" Jaybird said with laughter.

"How would he do that?" Chrissy, perplexed babywolfmama asked.

"Well, it all started with Ross Godwing, who collaborated with Oscar the Grouch to come up with this Artifical Intelligence Unit, sort of like Spock from Star Trek, that could write scripts using an algorithm that pools lines from all Sci-Fi scripts that have ever even been thought of. One day, they sat near a computer, the AI unit was computing a script by putting its head through the computer screen. After about five minutes, the AI unit took its head out of the screen and spat out a script for an hour and a half long Sci-Fi movie. The movie was called Moonfall," Jaybird answered.

The screen then showed a poster with a space background with a large white moon in the center and rainbow-colored 1960s style font saying "Moonfall." Two brown bears were on either side of a small female red bear. They all wore white space helmets and gray spacesuits.

"Moonfall is about a... very strange space station that has three bears in it who are trying to survive. They are in a disjointed love triangle. The first male bear is named B, and he has green eyes that are crossed the whole time. He is the leader of the group. The female bear is named X, and she has gray dead eyes. She spends all of her title in front of a computer that talks to her in gibberish. The other male bear is slightly smaller and is named Ib, and his eyes are all black. He speaks mostly in gibberish. His favorite line is 'I want to stick my head in a telephone socket.'," Jaybird continued.

Chrissy, curious babywolfmama, nodded and spoke, "That sounds advanced for an AI unit. And that is very eye-opening to see the result of years of Sci-Fi script writing. And a lot of the best stuff comes from 60 years ago. I'll be daaaamned."

"Yes. When the Sesame street crew got together and read the script, they pissed themselves laughing," Jaybird said.

"I can imagine. Would you like to play some clips from the movie?" Chrissy, curious babywolfmamallama asked.

"Why sure!" Jaybird said before he spat out some film.

Some Sci-Fi rap music was playing in the background, and the main computer was spitting out lyrics.

"I don't give a fuck. I'm rich, bitch.

Three pods and a ship. I'm rich bitch.

Hit the bar and blow it up. I'm slick, bitch.

I don't give a fuck."

Then the song "Intergalactic Fanatic Scholastic" by Peter Whitey Parker and the Floating Clowns started to play. (It sounds like "Intergalactic" by Beastie Boys.)

While the computer spit out these lyrics,

"Intergalactic, planetary, planetary, intergalactic

Intergalactic, planetary, planetary, intergalactic

A new born dimension, a new born dimension

A new born dimension"

"COMMA!" B shouted in a high-pitched nasally voice.

B and Ib started to dance wildly while shaking their fat bear asses on camera. B kept sticking his tongue in and out and poking himself in the stomach. There was text above B's head that said, "Yes. These are stage directions. I told this mother f%$#^@ to do it."

Ib started shaking wildly and yelled in a deep baritone voice similar to yoitssteve on Twitch.TV, "Radio Mania! Radio Mania!"

Then the computer imitated Peter Whitey Parker's voice verbatim. It sang while it showed Peter's face on the screen.

"Don't you tell me now to well smile

I'll make you stick it around worth your while

Beyond my numbers what you can dial

It's because maybe we're so versatile

Style, profile, I say

It back brings always me when I hear, "ooh, child!"

From Savannah River out to the Nile

I grind the marathon to the very last mile

Well, if you fondle me I feel reviled

Clowns, Ib, B, X, and Peter danced.

Then the signal got interrupted.

"Whoa! What the hell?!" Jaybird shouted.

"The transmission's been interrupted. What in the world is going on?!" Babywolfgirl Chrissy asked dramatically.

Banana Ice was mute-screaming. Count Vanilla was straightening his fur rapidly. Blinky was squirting eyedrops in his eyes. Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas was quickly redoing her make-up. Prince Oliver: Werewolf of the United Planets was gulping and staring at the camera as though he had seen a ghost. Penn was reading the King James Version of the Bible.

And Bruce Ice was mute-speaking and smiling. His closed caption said, "Thank Whoever interrupted that transmission. That was the worst movie I ever had the displeasure of seeing in my life."

Master then appeared on a screen by himself. He was dressed to the nines in fox furs and wolf tails. His aquamarine eyes, strong nose, full lips, and strong chin showed through his layers. Then he spoke in his deep voice, "Excuse the interruption, Chrissy, sub of many glorious titles. If I didn't know better, I would ask if you were a switch instead. But my point is, I need to announce that the Florida News Agency is no longer trendy."

"You are absolutely correct, Master. Thank you for the interruption," Chrissy, sub of many glorious titles said. "I'm as submissive as it gets, Master. I guarantee you that."

"I am well aware. Also, a fur gathering is occurring tomorrow at midnight. Be there, or be the Florida News Agency!" Master said with a chuckle.

Bruce Ice nodded, mute-laughed, and mute-spoke. His closed caption was, "Will do. I have thousands of dollars worth of furs to present at the event."

"Zachary Giraffinakis, please unmute that screen," Chrissy, sub of many glorious titles said.

"Yes ma'am," he said as he unmuted the screen.

"Only thousands, Bruce Ice? Really? I have like a whole case worth of furs. I have spent tens of thousands on furs. You don't know brown bear privilege," Banana Ice said.

"He is correct. Banana Ice... I can't with this *ridiculous* name, my dear son, is the most entitled, spoiled, and submissive subby cubby in every galaxy. I'm his mother. I can vogue for that, but as I'm saying this, I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed," Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas spoke as she visibly shrugged.

Blinky, Count Vanilla, and Banana Ice shrugged. Bruce Ice scratched his head and looked at her with a puzzled look.

"Definitely proud. His title should be Prince Banana Ice," Prince Oliver: Werewolf of the United Planets stated.

"Ashamed. The Lord doesn't award those who were spoiled here in this life. He values hard workers," Penn said.

"Actually. He's both," Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas said flatly to Penn.

"Can you explain that to us, please?" Penn asked. "I'm very confused right now."

"Oui. While my husband and I are extremely wealthy, we definitely trained my son to be inquisitive and read as much as possible. We also instilled the value of having a lot of physical activity through rigorous training. He also was taught to be specialized in his craft," Gloria Balalalalalalalalalas said.

Prince Banana Ice smiled at the camera.

"Someone put a crown on his head, please," Chrissy, sub of many glorious titles said.

"As a matter of fact, find a crown for Queen Gloria as well," Master spoke. "After all, a prince is not a prince without a queen."

"That is absolutely correct, Master," Chrissy, sub of many glorious titles said.

"Hold the phone. If Prince Banana Ice and Queen Gloria exist, then technically Abigail Ice should be Princess Abigail Ice, Megara Ice should be Queen Megara Ice, and I should be King Bruce Ice," King Bruce Ice said.

"THAT IS A BRILLIANT OBSERVATION," Master and Chrissy spoke at the same time.

"Everyone. Our news anchors are now all royalty. We have Squire Blinky, Count Vanilla, Prince Banana Ice, Queen Gloria, King Bruce Ice, Prince Oliver: Werewolf of the United Planets, and Pastor Penn," Chrissy, sub of many glorious titles said.

Squire Blinky smiled and blinked with excitement. Count Vanilla smiled. Prince Banana Ice smiled and blushed. Queen Gloria dramatically fanned herself with a shy smile. King Bruce Ice growled.

"Thank you, Chrissy, submissive queen of nomenclature," Prince Oliver: Werewolf of the United Planets said.

"Thank you. I appreciate your recognition of my being a pastor. I welcome the title, but I do not require to be called 'Pastor Penn.' I am forever humbled by the true royalty, my Lord Jesus Christ," Pastor Penn said.

"We have spoken! Can someone please get crowns, medals, and sashes for our anchors please?" Chrissy, sub with many glorious titles asked.

The backstage crew quickly rushed through the props.

"Thank you. And on that note, we will take a 15-minute commercial break," Chrissy, sub with many glorious titles spoke.

"Thank you. I need that in hopes of completing my broadcast," Jaybird said as his head took up the whole screen.

And Prince Banana Ice started laughing uncontrollably again over some elevator music that was playing to ease into the commercial break.

Chapter 38 – Something None of Them Wanted or Expected

“Care to explain why I have to refresh my sore eyes with that face of yours? What a way to start a morning.”

“I’ve never done that, but that doesn’t sound like a bad idea. I’ll see what I can do with it.”

<Geez, looks like joking is not an option any more in your presence.>

Despite his manners, Frankenstein aimed for more than vexing the werewolf lord.

“Please tell me you have a good reason why you requested a conversation with me so early. I’d thought I told you we must for the time being be cautious of every word we share, including those exchanged through transmission. And I couldn’t possibly be the only one who told you so.”

<Uh, the thing is, my kid will be busy for the next few days. So Adne and I decided to lend a claw or two.>

My kid?

Frankenstein was about to snap at him that he should be more specific with his term, when there are dozens of werewolves under his care.

But he held his voice, upon reminding himself that there is only one werewolf aside from Adne that Muzaka would ever mention to him at a time like this.

Audited by an expert?

Who could this expert be?

Whatever it is that she discovered, I doubt she can find the best expert other than me, in anything related to Union or Crombel.

But how come she didn’t come to me and......

Frankenstein sealed his lips tighter, albeit already zipped, in the middle of his cognitive complaints.

‘You shouldn’t be missing her, Frankenstein.’

He told himself a number of times that she is off-limits, especially since they had ended up exploring each other’s lips.

Nevertheless, here he was, painfully savoring how his heart was sailing towards her. He had to struggle to anchor his heart back to his chest.

Muzaka began to fidget with something, unavailable for witness at Frankenstein’s angle of vision.

“Stop it. We didn’t get to diagnose the exact cause of the failure in activating QuadraNet. It’s not safe to disclose such an important resource on transmission, lest there be loss or leak.”

“I’ll fetch it myself.”

Muzaka made a peculiar face; it appeared as if he honestly wanted to slap his ears to see if they are functional.

“There’s no other way, is there? Oh, no need to be concerned that other werewolves would be curious or suspicious of my visit. I’ll make sure no one else can see me.”

Frankenstein exhibited not the slightest hint of hesitation. If it was guaranteed that he will not get to see the certain gray-haired werewolf, there was no reason for him to stay away from wolfkind’s realm.

“So make sure I can receive it upon arrival. I’ll leave as soon as I get it; I’m a busy man myself.”

<Uh... Okay. Okay! G-great! I’ll see you soon.>

Frankenstein headed to 3rd Elder as soon as Muzaka’s face flashed off from the monitor, to let him know that once again he will be absent for a while.

“There is this jer... I mean, there is this someone I must see. So stay tucked. I won’t take long.”

Frankenstein did not even wait for a reply from the white-haired man.

The moment he was surely gone, 3rd Elder’s eyes were caught on fire.

Though he wished Frankenstein would have revealed where he was off to, he knew he should not wait to determine his destination.

So he drew out the plastic bag containing the sample of Frankenstein’s tonic, kept hidden all this time for this moment – the moment to let his old lab techniques shine.

Simultaneously, he prayed that Helga and their accomplice assistant would be ready.

A few days later, in the werewolf realm

“Man – even the Kertias would flush in shame at your skills in stealth. How did you get here without sounding the alarm?”

“There is always a way, but don’t expect me to tell you. That’s not what I’m here for, after all.”

“Well, you’ve got a point.”

Muzaka stepped down from his thrown to lead his guest to one of werewolf labs, to present him with a pile of documents.

Frankenstein scanned the contents, before his eyes glinted.

“Huh...”

“What? Is it really that important?”

“...Pretty much.”

That was when he emitted an exasperated sigh, as if he could not believe he was saying this.

“I’d hate to admit it, but the Union and Ignes were not too shabby. The former actually devised such a genius weapon, and the latter sought to make it better.”

“A genius weapon?”

Now inquisitive, Muzaka peeked over Frankenstein’s shoulder.

“Genetic... Calibrator... Chip... GC chip? A weapon based on biochip technology? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Biochip. It’s a trick I’d often make use of. It’s no longer a stranger to the civilians, either. It requires human genetic information – DNA or protein – to work as a conductor on an electronic device or parts, to be connected to a computer, thereby allowing calculations and data interpretations of rate and accuracy beyond any human imagination or preexistent semiconductor. It’s a dreamlike technique that...”

“Speak human, will ya?”

“......Simply put, a biochip enables your computer to deal with data and information at a rate that only a biological brain can conduct. Consider it an essential element in shaping a computer into a fine mechanical mimicry of human brain.”

Muzaka did not withdraw the puzzled look on his face, but he did not ask for further explanation.

“Okay, if you say so. So what does this GC chip do?”

“It was to be used for weapons developed or manufactured by the Union. And for the computers that would control such weapons. They would download the DNA data laid inside the chip to target only the designated foe for assault.”

“So it makes a weapon capable of telling its targets on its own? I have no idea how that’s possible, but you’re right. Those rascals are not too shabby.”

Frankenstein continued with his ardent inspection of the document, wondering why Union had never flaunted such weapon. However, he could soon presume why.

‘Those monsters had long been standing as the summit of the world, thanks to their modified humans, technology in human modification, and the derivative profit. I doubt they could find a threat fearsome enough to take on with such weapon. And even though we later served as their great adversary, they wouldn’t have had samples to use against us, nobles, or werewolves.’

His assumption was proven by the note on the document, specifying how the GC chip never made it out of the list of weapons on a hold.

And obviously Ignes did not agree with such course of action.

“She was hoping to refine this weapon, to make it work exclusively on modified humans loyal to those that oppose her.”

“So they laugh and chit-chat under the chandelier but seek for a chance to bite at each other’s head on their carriages back from the ball. That’s so much like the Union, though I shouldn’t be saying this as an ex-tenant of Crombel’s lab.”

Frankenstein retorted with a snort and an expression that he is not completely brainless.

“Speaking of which, is the reconstruction all over now?”

“Sort of. This isn’t the first time, so there was no need for me to give orders.”

Muzaka grinned, despite the fact that having to rebuild his land on multiple basis is nothing to be proud about.

“But I couldn’t help getting scared during the process. I mean, we’ve already experienced destruction and construction several times. So I even came to think that maybe we should just leave things the way they are, since there’s a good chance they’d be dismantled again.”

“You know you can’t do that.”

“Oh, of course I do. But I’m scared as I speak. I wouldn’t be surprised to witness another facility breaking down to dust. Or hear something exploding.”

“No need to make yourself sound so ominous. The odds feel too high whenever you offer them.”

Muzaka snickered, as if telling his audience that he is worrying for nothing.

And just then resonated a CRASH, something none of them wanted or expected.

“...What was that?”

“H-how should I know? But it came from the biggest lab in our...”

“You mean the main lab? Where Mr. Jang worked?”

“Uh... Yeah. What about it?”

Then why are you still here?

Frankenstein glared at the werewolf lord briefly before he bolted. Muzaka soon caught up to him and outran him.

They soon got to see how the lab was already teeming with werewolf researchers and warriors.

“What was that all about?”

“Something just blew up, right?”

“Ugh, what’s the smell? This is the foulest, thickest smoke I’ve ever smelled!”

The atmosphere was close to chaotic, but werewolves did not fail in noticing Muzaka and letting him through the unbearably malodorous stench of smolder, followed by Frankenstein, whose presence nobody questioned due to the magnitude of the situation.

Once he reached the center of the commotion, Frankenstein could see why no one kept much interest in him.

“...What happened?”

Muzaka murmured at the sight of a hunched, terribly quivering werewolf, his tone no longer merry, now steeled with utmost rigidity and coldness.

Frankenstein’s heart seized as well upon identifying who he was.

“M-my lord......”

Adne was holding onto something with hands just as quivery.

Muzaka closed their distance, and Adne stepped back as he shook his arms like they were on fire.

“...This must be the network transmission modem. The one that human researcher installed for the QuadraNet. How come it’s in pieces? He told us never to touch it. You told me an urgent business came up before you left; is this what you were talking about?”

Adne’s lips mumbled something inaudible in a hurry, but with skittish eyes he surveyed the faces looking down at him before trembling once again.

“We gotta talk, Adne. We have a lot to talk about.”

Muzaka sternly announced, as Frankenstein narrowed his lips.

The ideology and terminology for “biochip” and “biological computers” are not fictional. My original plan was to get into more details regarding the current research and commercial progress that has been made regarding these technologies. However, I decided to include only the most basic concepts about them, for I believe including something that requires professional comprehension would prove as hindrance in readers’ appreciation of a work.

Also, it’s about time to bring out the star of the show so far hidden - the apparent traitor in QuadraNet project. I’ve been providing hints about this traitor over the several past chapters; I’m not sure if you caught every single one of them, and I’ll definitely get into details about them in future chapters! In any event, after spending several of hours (and there’s a reason why the word ‘spending’ is there) with a friend of mine who has a lot, but fortunately sometimes not much, trouble with communicating because of a relatively recent stroke (and I do truly love and admire this woman for all her strength in the face of not being able to summon simple words very often to not too much), I ‘spent’

a fair amount of time playing with my clothes.

probably because I was trying to help her squire certain legal forms and also figure out why her New York Times hadn’t refreshed its news in a week, maybe because she doesn’t know that she had to log in and couldn’t remember her password, claiming that she never had to ‘log in’ before.

I also discovered that she does not know how to log into her computer because she doesn’t know the password she must have set up in the last few years or less, since her computer is a Macbook Air. Hmm.

So now she’s logged out and we could only use the computer with ‘guest’ status which must have been set so that the ‘guest’ could only search safari, but even with that capability, could not ddownload or print much of anything.

Well, at least we know her laptop is secure, but sadly, she is now locked out of it.

I have a sister, my only remaining sister, who wanted an i-phone for long time, finally got one, but doesn’t know how to use practically any of its features.

She seems to be essentially in the same boat as my friend who had a stroke, because I tried to explain to her that Siri can’t answer a lot of questions if there are no apps installed in the phone for Siri to access.

She has no email address, having never used her husbands computer or relied on technology to do everything for her before..

Now that takes true genius, which I grant her the status of, but without an email account and hence, no Apple ID or password to gain access to apps like Google or even download them, Siri doesn't have too many reference points to work with. Uh, she does have Safari, but I’m not sure if that alone makes much difference in the collection of information for Siri. Or even my sister.

She also does use dictation a lot for phone calls and such, but a close friend of hers told me she holds the phone a couple of feet (or one too many) and simply YELLS her voice mail questions, or whatever, at the iPhone, resulting (I assure you) in horrible transcriptions, specially the texts.

During a bathroom break a minute ago, I decided that I would not title any of these entries but if anyone reading them can think of a title to my ‘Blah’ entry - ha, ha, a play on words there - throw it out. Okay?

In ending, I want to write my health tip for the day:Quick warning: Too much trail mix can be a bad thing. I mean, I love the stuff, but too much can make you fat. Trust me, I’m a living example.

The Attention Economy

Have you looked at Facebook lately and given any thought to what you are seeing? Does it seem that life today has become one constant, continuing stream of non-sequiturs and self-referential nonsense that passes in through our eyes and out of our brains at the rate of your download speed?

Back in 2014, Kim Kardashian “broke the internet.” And by “broke the internet,” I mean she photo-shopped a picture of her bare fanny and put it on a magazine cover. Naturally, because it’s a bare ass, and because that ass happens to belong to the “Uber-Marketer,” Ms. Kardashian, the photo was republished a zillion times, and while adults rolled their eyes groaning at the insanity of it all, and teenagers were thrilled and stimulated in some very personal ways. If you don’t believe me, just check with the nearest teenager.

The media bitched about how lewd and classless the pictures were. People complained that the media gave her—a woman who has accomplished nothing in her life other than being born rich and marrying rappers (and being recently robbed in Paris)—way too much airtime. Folks observed that criticizing the media for publicizing Ms. Kardashian paradoxically gave Ms. Kardashian even more attention and cultural presence. Her images were even plastered on coffee makers.

Ms. Kardashian signifies everything we despise about social media, the meaningless content that is like a train wreck—you just can’t look away. And because nobody can, that content spreads, creating an online experience of a never-ending series of cultural train wrecks where we all gawk, discuss and/or make fun of it for 15 minutes until diverted by the next looming pile-up.

I hear three complaints against social media and the Internet in general:

It’s making us self-absorbed and petty

It’s ruining on our ability to maintain meaningful relationships thus making us lonelier

It’s interfering with our ability to focus and get “more important shit” done in our lives.

After a lot of 'research' I discovered these things. However, none of these claims turned out to be completely accurate.

Social media doesn’t necessarily cause people to become more self-absorbed; it only offers narcissistic folks more opportunities to indulge their narcissism to more people.

It’s not really interfering with either the connectedness we feel to others or the number of people we feel close to; it expands our grid of acquaintances and the quantity, not quality, of our casual social interactions.

Technology presents more chances for diversion, but it also presents opportunities for dissemination of information, tools for collaboration, and occasions for organization.

The “the internet is ruining us” argument is a load of crap. It’s the fear that always accompanies new thoughts and new technologies. When TV became mainstream, people worried that everyone’s brain was going to rot. Nitro-glycerine would destroy the world.

Contemporary technology isn’t changing us. It’s actually altering society. There is a big difference. The first is how we are in the world; the other is how we respond to the world around us. Social media is changing the basic economics of our day-to-day lives, in profound ways that most of us likely don’t notice. And it’s people like Ms. Kardashian who are taking advantage of it.

If you’ve ever traveled in a terribly poor country, or with people who grew up in crippling poverty, you’ll notice how much they talk about food; their favorite foods, what they’re going to eat this weekend, how they like this and don’t like that. Many of these people’s lives frankly revolve around food because it was so scarce where they grew up.

The preference for strawberries to peaches matters a lot if you can rarely purchase either. But in first-world societies where food is plentiful, discussions of food are superficial and short. (Unless you are chef)

History teaches us that economic scarcity was at one time based on land. Because there was a limited amount of food, daily economic and political concerns involved land. People contemplated what land to work, what they were going to grow, what kind of harvest to expect, etc. Food was always a priority.

With the industrial revolution and accompanying mechanization, the scarcity was no longer land, it was labor. Trained people were required to run these machines that did the cool new shit so you could make money and get get the big house. For a long time, the organizing standard in society was based on labor; who you worked for, how much you paid them, how much you made, etc.

In the 20th century, there was more being produced than any one person would ever need or purchase. The new scarcity was now knowledge. People spent their days trying to determine what the best toothpaste was, what a toaster oven could do, how to spend their holiday bonus money. Advertising and marketing expanded and soon dominated society because they were the means of disseminating the information people needed to appropriately allocate their resources.

This is where the Internet and smartphones have “disrupted” everything. With the evolution of the Internet, the primary scarcity in society is no longer knowledge. There is more information available to than we could ever use. If you want to know about a new product, read the Wikipedia article and 1000+ Amazon reviews.

We now have easy access to knowledge, land, and food. The new scarcity in the Internet age is ATTENTION. Now that we have more information flowing through our society than any of us could ever hope to process, the new economic bottleneck is attention.

Via email, we are each bombarded with an unending supply of advertisements, offers, and educational experiences. Advertisements get more nonsensical, like the Geico gecko or the copper-lined non- stick pots. The goal of advertisements is now to simply gain your attention.

Your inbox is filled with headlines such as, “I Started To Explode, And Then You’ll Never Guess How This Taco Salad Saved My Life,” and when you click it, it takes you to a series of silly animated GIFs and a YouTube video that has nothing to do with tacos, or saving your life, but is slathered in advertisements and adware.

Why have politics and politicians seemingly become less about policies and more about actions designed to draw attention to individuals or political parties? What we see seems to be morphing into a variety of soft-core porn: music videos, commercials, movies, and reality TV shows. If it’s not soft-core porn, it’s some other kind of porn: food porn, cop porn, disaster porn, or actual, real life porn. Porn gets noticed. And attention is what sells.

It is easy to see why Ms. Kardashian is famous and has continued to be famous for a decade for no other reason than she’s already famous! This woman has contributed entirely nothing to humankind. Yet in the age of attention, she is Master Yoda. She’s figured it out.

Ms. Kardashian is a genius. Not a “solves astrophysics or sub-atomic particles in her head kind of genius but can’t boil water” kind of genius. But she’s still a genius. Just like an autistic prodigy can count 3,237 toothpicks dumped on the floor just by looking at them, Ms. Kardashian can command the attention of millions of people with a glimpse of her curvy fanny.

The quality of the attention really is unimportant. What matters is the attention. It is an asset in our new economy. Millions of eyes follow her wherever she goes and she leverages the crap out of it. She earned millions off an iPhone app that did nothing, and a TV show that showed nothing. She appears in a nightclub and the club can charge $2,500 for entry. She gets paid more for public appearances than Nobel Prize winners. One year Forbes Magazine estimated her income at $28 million.

A shallow person becoming rich and famous isn’t new in our culture. The “attention economy” may exacerbate the problem, but it didn’t create it. But when we apply the Attention Economy rules to the other areas of our lives, we trip up…and pretty quickly.

The Attention Economy and Extremism (for one)

Social networks are the basis of the Attention Economy. They are focused on eyes and clicks to earn revenue. They design algorithms that illustrate the most interesting and attention-grabbing information available in your social network. If your newsfeed is loaded with boring stuff, you stop looking at it. So, in its place, Facebook shows you the most outlandish happenings in your social network, because extreme events draw attention.

This has far-reaching consequences, not only for our perceptions of society overall, but on how we feel about our personal lives as well. Here are some examples:

It seems like “everybody” is getting married, or having kids, or having amazing trips around the world, or doing something cool and fun and sexy. It’s because we are exposed to these events that makes it feel that way. It’s not that everyone is having amazing life experiences all the time. It’s that we’re always being shown people’s amazing life experiences all the time. Therefore, many of us begin to feel we are missing something, when we simply have a false perception of what’s going on in our “friends’” lives.

The Attention Economy rewards people who are self-centered and self-promotional because these people get noticed. Thus, it seems that everyone is becoming more shallow and self-absorbed, when in fact, we are becoming more exposed to other people’s narcissism.

Politically, the most severe, radical, and unenlightened views get the most airtime because they’re often the most unique and seize the most attention. Apparently, the world is spiraling into a festering cesspool, when really, we’re just getting more exposed to the lunatic fringe.

Threats become sensationalized because of how much attention they reap. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning than dying from a terrorist attack. You’re more likely to die from the flu than you are from Ebola or Swine Flu. Yet, today, when you watch TV, it seems the world is in a constant state of impending collapse.

Pointless events such as nipple slips, gaffs, errant interviews, and celebrities doing stupid celebrity stuff are taking on a much greater cultural significance. If Ms. Kardashian got hit by a wagon tomorrow and left this mortal coil, you’d see the usual media-driven mourn-fest and fabulous television funeral, but would anyone really care? Probably not. Well, maybe Kanye.

Most of the complaints about social media, smartphones, and the Internet boil down to one thing: attention. People don’t have an attention span anymore. People don’t focus on what’s in front of them. People don’t even fucking talk to you at dinner anymore. Imagine the typical “date night” with your smartphone; you’ve seen it or done it yourself.

The attention economy makes it easy to spread your attention across six different curiosities and 22 friends in a day. And because we’re spreading our attention thinly, many are losing the important life skill of FOCUS.

Focus is what generates continuing success. Focus leads to richer and meaningful relationships. Focus determines how well we improve at a task. Yet our current economy is providing disincentive to focus and incentive toward —Whoa, did you see that video of the guy on the airplane wing landing on the car? That was wild! How about the guy flying through the Alps, look, he lived!

Focus. The new age presents problems of attention, not of happiness or narcissism or loneliness. This issue is not going to go away; it’s simply going to get worse.

The problem is not the technology; it’s how we use it. Is it assisting us or are we serving it? These are the new challenges coming generations must face. Our grandparents had to learn to master their time and energy to take advantage of the labor economy. Our parents had to master their minds and problem-solving to take advantage of the knowledge economy. Now people have to learn to master their focus and self-awareness to skillfully take advantage of the Attention Economy.

Limitless knowledge brings limitless opportunity. But learning to manage the new currency is learning to manage your attention. The most valuable asset you can accumulate will likely not be money, not wealth; it may not even be knowledge, but instead, the ability to control your own attention, and to just focus.

Until you are able to shut it out and limit your attention away from the shiny things and nipple slips, until you are able to choose what has significance to you and what doesn’t, we all will be served up garbage, and it will only get worse. And now that you know—it’s your own fault.

In future, your attention will be bought and sold. And it may be that the only people able to capitalize are the people that can control their own.
