Grab your favorite autumnal beverage. This one's a long one!

A couple of weekends ago, I got the utmost joy of visiting Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific Coast. Most importantly, I got to finally say hello to the Pacific Ocean for the very first time. Being raised in a country that is bordered by two oceans, you think I would naturally have visited them both… nope!

We arrived at the national park, and took about a 20 minute walk before we got to the ocean. Being the first time I’ve been to ocean since coming to Costa Rica, I was a ~*little*~ excited. I dropped all my stuff, stripped down to my swimsuit, and ran straight into the chilly Pacific Ocean (sans sunscreen, I couldn’t wait a second more). At that point, it had been over two years since I had seen the ocean. Way too long. I spent what felt like hours swimming out until I couldn’t touch and then farther. The water was such a pretty blue. The first beach was in a protected cove, so the waves were non-existent, but the thieving monkeys and raccoons were plentiful. A very short walk across the peninsula was another beach that had decent waves perfect for body surfing. Some new-found friends and I walked along the beaches taking pictures and slow-motion videos of the waves breaking. A couple of us also walked out along the volcanic rock on the edge of a small peninsula to watch the waves roll in and crash up on the rocks. Crabs skittered around us as we looked out to the scattered islands and the ocean beyond.

That night back at the hotel, I got to sing in a tunnel-like hallway with some friends. The tunnel has amazing acoustics, and it felt so good to sing. Unfortunately, I don’t have a recording or video. I haven’t really sang since I’ve been here because I decided against joining a community choir at another university. It’s definitely interesting figuring out what I do and don’t miss about home. Singing is probably near the top of the things I miss doing regularly.

The next day I headed out to go snorkeling as an optional excursion with my program. However, when we got to the snorkeling place, they said we conveniently couldn’t snorkel because the water was too cloudy from a storm that happened a week prior, and instead we were going ocean kayaking. I’m not going to lie–I was really bummed out and rightfully a little pissed. One of my favorite things in the world to do, that I specifically paid for, wasn’t going to happen. Yes, yes, yes, ocean kayaking is very cool, but I am not a fan of tandem kayaks which is all we could use. We kayaked a very long way to a beach where we had fruit and saw sloths, but then we had to quickly kayak back. It wasn’t worth the money I spent, but what’s done is done. I guess I can say I kayaked on the open ocean? Shortly after, I boarded the bus to go home and said hasta luego to the Pacific Ocean. (Not for long though. Stay tuned, hehe.)

The following weekend was my last included excursion with my program. I went to La Paz waterfalls and nature refuge and the Doka coffee plantation. La Paz was gorgeous. You cannot swim at these falls, but the cloud forest was too chilly anyways. The forest was so lush, and I didn’t even mind all the stairs to and from each waterfall. Everything was just too pretty. In the buidlings, they house animals that were taken from the wild and used as exotic pets. I saw many kinds of snakes, frogs, butterflies, monkeys, birds, and a couple big cats. I never enjoy seeing animals behind glass, especially jaguars, but some of these animals would face certain death if they were returned to the wild.

The Doka coffee plantation was a great learning experience. The small shot of coffee liqueur definitely had nothing to do with my opinion. I got to see how the coffee is grown, fermented, dried, peeled, roasted, and packaged! Coffee is one of Costa Rica’s main exports, and a lot of it is sustainably grown. Starbucks is a large buyer of Costa Rican coffee, but for some reason does not use Costa Rican coffee in its Costa Rican stores. I’m not sure why, but it is definitely concerning. Learning how it’s grown and processed just makes me appreciate my drug of choice more.

The coffee tour and waterfall excursion was only for one day, but it was the last included one which means all remaining weekends are free for personal travel. This blog post is already long as heck, so I’ll save my first free weekend for another post, and I’ll try to update in a more timely manner. By the time you’re reading this, I’m over halfway done with my program here, and we are officially on the downhill slope. It’s crazy, and I have so many mixed emotions about it. More on that in the future!

5 things that make me happy

1. How this community (which is often arguing over small nonsense) can fight as one. For example, when one simmer is being deprived of their Tumblr account without any warning, I've seen waves of amazing support in here ! So it proves we can be a huge force when we want to be !

2. Memories of my little dog. It's been two years since she is gone and I still miss her as if it's day one. But I cherish every memory I had with her, it's warming my heart in the hardest times.

3. The sound of waves crashing on the sand.

4. A big mug of hot cocoa.

5. The happy laugh of babies.
