been thinking about the rotting blue heart in the House of the Undying that seemed to nearly kill Dany and the Heart of Winter that made Bran cry. Drogon ate the blue heart, saving Dany, and destroying the HotU as a result. Dany also ate a raw stallion heart to give her son (the stallion who mounts the world, the title that actually belongs to Dany/Drogon) strength.
There's some foreshadowing there, right? Dany and Drogon (plus the other dragons/dragon riders maybe) are gonna eat the Heart of Winter? Dany consuming death itself? life eating death, fire melting ice, etc. Obviously the "Heart of Winter" might not be a literal and physical heart.
Bran eating the Heart of Winter through Summer; Summer literally consuming Winter. We see him eat while in Summer's mind in the books, it's an escape from his own nagging hunger. Hunger is for winter, feasting is for summer.
Eating as a celebration of life. I like this visual better than This Character strikes down the Big Bad with a sword. I also like it more than the three dragons simply burning whatever they see in the Heart of Winter. Eating is a celebration of life; I read a post awhile ago about how grrm puts so much Detail into his descriptions of food because of this. because it's all about celebrating life in the face of death, when you know Winter is Coming anyways.

I feel that BRAN is actually the "Queen Elizabeth I" of the story & a child by Sansa/Jon would be the King James I of England (6th of Scotland)
Oh Esther thank you so much for the shout out. I am not an expert by any means but I think anon is onto something here.
1. Sansa shares clear parallels with Elizabeth I but she also shares parallels with Bran:
A. Both are unlikely heirs, having an older sibling who reigns. Robb, like Mary Tudor, married against the wishes of their council to someone who was profoundly disliked.
B. Any jonsa kid would be “of the North” which is roughly the Westerosi equivalent of Scotland so, parallel with James.
C.A jonsa child would be Brandon’s nephew, just as James was of Elizabeth.
D. A jonsa child would technically be both the northern heir AND the southern heir, therefore uniting BOTH crowns. This way the North wouldn’t be giving up their independence.
E. Both lost their mother at an early age and had to deal with responsibilities beyond their years. James was also a very young King.
F. A funny tidbit is that James’s mother was considered a great beauty, and her embroidery skills were legendary, just like Catelyn’s.
The way I see it, Brandon is not Elizabeth but the York King, if he had lived. GRRM is writing the war of the Roses with a flipped ending where the Yorks=Starks win and not the Tudors=Targaryens.
(about this ask)
Thank you for the additional thoughts, @minitafan!

IWTV S2 Ep1 Musings - Daciana: History through Visual Context in Ploiești, Romania
I immediately fell in love with The Vampire Daciana & her Romanian castle, and wanted to know more about it all.
We already know how much the set/costume designers on IWTV looooove attention to detail; they tell whole stories just through architecture, furniture, clothes, etc. So I was like OK, AMC, I see you; lemme start doing some reading up on Romania, so I can try to figure out what might be going on with Daciana. (Warning: I know eff all about Romania or Eastern Europe.)
ROMANIA
Tumblr media
Map of Romania. Ploiești's the dot just under Muntenia, north of Bucharest, the capital. Ploiești's part of Wallachia, the IRL kingdom of Vlad Tepes (aka Dracula). Louis & Claudia went there in the 1940s, so I hope this map is accurate enough. (There's this map, but I dunno the date.)
DACIANA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most obvious thing about her is that she's not dressed in the typical traditional Romanian folk clothing I see all over Google, full of white-red-blue/black palettes.
Tumblr media
Daciana's not following traditional 19th/20th-century Romanian nationalist images. Her green/brown palette & silhouette is telling, as she lacks the puffy white blouses & dark skirts. (Despite her name, I'm ruling out her being Dacian (X X)--you think you're FUNNY, AMC! But IDK about Cezare Romulo (X X); might do a Pt2!)
Sleeves
First thing's her trailing slashed open sleeves, which were screaming Medieval! at me. Here's some 15th century Renaissance examples, but with surcoats, which is different, but the sleeves reminded me of hers so IDFK.
Tumblr media
We could chalk this up to Daciana's design as just generic "medieval" fairytale stuff and keep it moving. But to give her a fair shake, I looked at local examples for anything similar that's more recent.
Tumblr media
Traditional clothing from Huedin, Romania (north Transylvania), (X X).
Tumblr media
Traditional clothing from Cluj, Romania (north Transylvania).
Keep Transylvanian/Muntenian cross-cultural contacts in mind when we get to Daciana's castle, cuz it's important!
Tumblr media
Wrt rarer non-puffy sleeves, the square cut (light blue) seems to be more prevalent in Wallachia/Moldavia/Bessarabia (southern & eastern Romania); while the rectangular cut (dark green) is all over Romania, but definitely has a concentration in Wallachia & Moldavia.
And this makes sense, cuz the style seems to also be prevalent in 19th - 20th century Bulgaria, just south of Wallachia. Hrm....
Tumblr media
Daciana's sleeves hang very long--the only example of super long sleeves I could find is a 19th century one at the Met (C.I.47.3.4a–d). The only example of slashed sleeves I could find is in this museum exhibit at Bran Castle (yes, THE Bran Castle--I'll get to it in a minute!)
Tumblr media
Belt, Bodice, & Fabric
Tumblr media
Daciana's belt is so plain compared to everything else. Is it supposed to be a leather Romanian chimir (worn by mountain/forest folk)? Those are only worn by men though? Or it depends? Or is it a just a plain cloth belt? It's reminding me of these examples (X X):
Tumblr media
I wish I could see more of Daciana's bodice, if there's any particular kind of cut or patterns. Is the diamond netted/knotted/roped pattern on her arms significant? Her fabric is interesting, too:
Tumblr media
What's this embroidery? Brocade? (Byzantine-Renaissance?) Damask? (c. 14th-16th century?) Lace? Something else? My brain wants to assume it's imported? Meaning: she's hella rich. Cuz like, the traditional Romanian blouse & skirt used to belong solely to peasants, b4 19th-20th century aristocrats started wearing it, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDKY--more reading led me to a whole bunch of complicated stuff, that can probably be simplified by just saying: The Ottomans. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pre-19th century Romanian aristocracy wore super opulent clothes, inspired by not just the Ottomans (X), but also the Byzantine Greeks (via 18th century Romanian Phanariote boyars (X X X)), etc. But aside from the hanging sleeves, Daciana's dress doesn't really resemble any of these foreign examples. However, it does track with my theory that Daciana predates the 19th-century Romanian nationalist/traditional clothes that became so iconic later on.
Like Louis & Claudia did, let's follow Daciana to her castle! ^0^
DACIANA'S CASTLE
Tumblr media
I NEED to know if AMC filmed on location in Romania, or if Daciana's castle is just a studio set/green screen.
The interior's nowhere near what I expected, considering Daciana's haggard appearance. It's really nice--clean & tidy. No spiderwebs, no chipped plaster/paint, not even any bloodstains--but I've mentioned before that I think it's indicating that Daciana's a mother who takes better care of her home (and "child") than herself.
Archway
The first thing is the arch when they first come in (noticeable mostly cuz of how Louis had to bend down to get in, he's so tall).
Tumblr media
These types of doors/arches are called "shouldered arches," dating from the Medieval-Gothic periods, which Europeans adapted from Islamic architecture during the medieval Crusades. (Examples inc. Lainici Monastery in Wallachia, and the Academy of Art in Cluj-Napoca (north Transylvania).)
Tumblr media
The left pic's Biertan Fortified Church, in Sibiu (south Transylvania). (Another door.) The right pic's Bran Castle, in Brasov (south Transylvania). (Another door.) (Vlad Tepes/Dracula historically never owned this castle, but pop culture says otherwise.) Both places were built by the German/Saxon Transylvanians in the 14th-16th centuries; which might help date Daciana's castle, if not Daciana herself? (The Saxon Transylvanians were in Wallachia, too.)
Wall Ornamentation
The last thing I'll discuss is the wall ornamentation/decoration:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The painted floral trim everywhere instantly reminded me of The Witcher 3, as found in Hungarian, Polish, Ukranian etc buildings. Apparently the designs are all related to fertility, growth/luck, and the Tree of Life. Walls (X X X) and doors (X X) were painted. You can see northern Romanian painted ornamentation in Suceava (Bukovina).
Tumblr media
There's painted wall designs in southern Romania, too.
Tumblr media
"The research of the popular interior in the Argeş and Muscel areas leads to the determination, along with a local specificity, and some Transylvanian influences, in the contact areas between southern Transylvania and northern Muntenia. In the researched areas, two lines of development of the popular interior can be observed, one relatively simple and the other complex. If the first is the prerogative of a typical Subcarpathian interior, the second represents a distinctly Transylvanian form, which was also imposed due to the presence of the Transylvanian population in the south of the Carpathians, settled in numerous villages." -- (Google Translated from Arta populară din zonele Argeș și Muscel, 1967)
(The website RomaniaDacia has A LOT to say about Transylvania, and the impact of the Germans, Saxons, Hungarians, etc on Wallachia & the rest of Romania.)
Tumblr media
Sure enough, I was finding way more carved ornamentation (X X X X X X) than painted ones.
Tumblr media
But I wonder if that's why a lot of southern traditional Romanian interiors I've been finding have totally plain whitewashed walls, too, with no painted ornaments, just tapestries (X X). I did find Romanian interior floral wall painted trims (X), but not nearly as much.
Tumblr media
Cuz actually, the closest comparanda I was finding for Daciana was Northern European rosemaling (X X), which is also giving me medieval vibes (X); specifically: trims on illuminated manuscripts like the Book of Hours (X X X)--which we know from Lestat in S01E06.
Tumblr media
And we do see some Romanian medieval fresco borders & frescoes that had been plastered over & whitewashed, in Biertan's 15th century churches, and in 13th-15th century Darjiu (Transylvania).
Tumblr media
So, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Romanian buildings (especially castles with whitewashed plastered walls) were formerly painted similar to Daciana's. Unfortunately, I just can't find an example or figure out what AMC might've been inspired by--Romania has hundreds of castles & churches.
So, I'm tapping out--this is the most I could find so far. U_U
Results? Inconclusive! 😭 My Google-fu has failed me, LOL!
I still have no idea what time period Daciana could be from. We could go several routes:
Go by her name, and say she's ooooold AF, an actual Dacian. She's just been collating Eastern European culture as she ages, but stopped at some point (as her mind deteriorated)
She's medieval, somewhere roundabouts the 14th-16th century (making her ~500 years old, the same age as Armand--but she's weaker (as I've theorized b4), which is why she was able to burn herself up.)
Settle on her being a local Wallachian from Southern Romania, likely pre-19th century / pre-industrial early-modern Europe
Handwave everything aside as Renn-Faire fairytale fantasy; let the tale seduce you~!
OR, we can just bully AMC until they give us an extended BTS look at how Daciana was conceptualized, telling us all the tea about her! 😈

Jon & Sansa | Winter in my Heart
youtube
I am simply obsessed with these 2. All the Metas and Fan Fiction from you beautiful kindred souls makes me feel so alive! I appreciate each and everyone of you. @istumpysk and @esther-dot @starwarsprincess1986 @sherlokiness @stormcloudrising , you guys give me LIFE with your Metas.
I'm more of a book fan because the show did these characters no justice. We all know WHY. I hope you guys are ok with me posting all these sappy videos. Im sort of new to Tumblr, and I love it here. When I heard about the Kit and Sofie movie set at the time of "war of the roses" I became even more obsessed with Jon and Sansa.
They are obviously giving it away with this movie and trying to get the "Anti's" to get comfortable with the fact that these 2 are inevitable. Before Sansa appeared at Castle Black and even before the show begin I always wondered what the deal was with these 2. It just didn't make any sense, or as someone else put it: "Jon and Sansa are the LOUDEST SILENCE". I ALWAYS had that feeling that the girl in grey would be her. There isn't a single doubt in my mind.
I think something horrible will go down in the Vale and the Blackfish will help Sansa some sort of way to get to Jon. I read many Metas where they say Jon will come back from the dead a mindless beast, and he will have no POV. That's just impossible. Our main character/HERO a mute stuck in a wolf.
First of all I don't think Jon is dead AT ALL. I believe he is hanging on by a string due to blood loss and shock and possibly in a coma like Bran was at the beginning of the series. He will warg Ghost and find out many things about himself through Ghost while his friends (the wildings) nurse him back to life. Though VAL is not one of my favorite characters, some say she is a healer. That could be good for Jon.
Melsandra will probably burn Shrinee anyway because she thinks Stannis is dead. I also think Jon was drugged before the stabbings. The way he spoke of clumsily trying to retrieve LongClaw, and he just gave me a weird vibe. I DO NOT TRUST Satin guys. I know everyone loves him but if Jon were drugged, Satin always provided the drinks. Maybe I'm reaching too far, but that's just my gut feeling. Satin is Judas.
Cerci Lannister had plans on taking Jon off the Chess Board as well, so there is no telling if she orchestrated the whole thing or not. Whatever happens, it's gonna be real UGLY when Jon wakes up. Jon Snow as we knew him is definitely DEAD and died in the snow. The real BEAST is what we will have left of Jon. He will make the Hound look like a little poodle dog.
I do also believe he will be in those woods as Ghost while Sansa is being chased by Ramsay's hounds. He will definitely kill them all including whomever is with the dogs. There was a passage in the books if I remember correctly how when Ghost was a pup, and he was eating. A dog approached to try and steal his prize. Jon said the Dog was much bigger than Ghost, but all Ghost had to do was look at her and she ran away. Ghost got right back to his prize.
I've always wondered if that was a foreshadowing for Ghost fighting the hounds. Another thing, WHERE do Ghost go when Jon wonders of his whereabouts? Well, I'm almost done here Jonsa family. I hope I'm not boring you guys to death with this long book of a post I am writing.
I DO believe Sansa is the Girl in Grey and I'll die by that. I also think that after Ghost!Jon saves her, Brianne and Jamie or Brianne and Company will get her to Castle Black. The dying horse in my opinion is not a real Horse. It could be a person. We've already had the real dying horse with Alyas. Sansa doesn't have to be dressed in Grey either because so many other things links her to Grey.
I remember she had a green cloak in Kings Landing that belonged to the hound and if I'm not mistaken she also got on the boat with LF with that cloak on. Where is it? I do not know.
Anyway, Sansa will arrive at Castle Black shortly after Jon wakes up from his coma (refuse to believe he died and actual death) People will SAY he rose from the dead as they did Sansa when she left Kings Landing. It will be a myth, but people will believe it. Jon will NOT be the same. I believe he will have all of his memories which preserved in Ghost but he will become "THE BEAST" After he has "killed the boy." He would have tapped into his powers and possibly converse with Bran and Bloodraven.
Jon will probably forget what happened in the woods and in his wolf dreams but he will have the shock of his life to see Sansa Stark of ALL people come through those gates. She's come to the end of the world to seek HIM out. He will realize it was the wrong sister he almost got murdered behind.
Everyone will fear him at Castle Black. He will be a cold blooded killer with no humanity left until she walks through those gates. It's a craving Jon had (to see her again) but he kept that to himself. We know this from Ygritte, Alays and Val. He was looking for Sansa in all these women, and now the real deal stands right before him.
I'm not saying it's going to be an easy journey, but she will be the ONLY ONE to calm the beast. Jon will protect her of course (or steal her) but he will be mean to Sansa at first. He will eventually fall madly in love with her and vice versa. She will sing to him, annoy him, anger him, pacify him and Jon won't know what hit him.
They will fall in love because of what they both endured. Jon will be OVER protective of Sansa in the books, possibly locking her up in a tower like Stannis has Val, but this time there is a real princess in the tower that Jon WANTS to steal. I know I've reached my limits here. I am sorry for rambling or any errors, I'm just so happy to have ran across you fine people. If I didn't tag someone is because I don't remember the names and I'm still fairly new on Tumblr.
You guys are the BEST!

Dracula's friend
☆ Romantic? vampire! Bill x turist! Fem! Reader
Vampire Bill 🧎🏽‍♀️I couldn't hold myself and I made Bill romanian 😭 is that romanianwashing a german?
You and your friends for Halloween decided to visit the Bran Castle, in Romania.
Tumblr media
Your friends decided to go on a little trip to Bran Castle for Halloween and they convinced you too so now you are in Bran, Brașov county, Romania wooooeewww 😻 (fun fact: because of my social anxiety I couldn't went on a trip with the class to Bran Castle awww 😞)
You took the entrance tickets and entered it.  "Do you think we'll see Dracula's ghost?"  One of your friends asked.  "I don't think there is a Drcaula, pfff" You said rolling your eyes.
While you were looking inside the castle you could still feel a strange presence nearby.  Maybe it's because your friends kept talking about Dracula.
It was already 4 o'clock in the afternoon, you and your friends were very hungry, so you left the castle and left, with nice pictures ofc 😋, and you went to a restaurant and got some skewers because they are the best.  "Listen.." Daniel, onr of your friends started to speak.  "What is it Dany?"
"Am I the only one who has felt a strange presence in the castle?"  He asked, so you weren't the only one who felt that..hmmm…
"No" You said taking a bite of the skewer "I thought I was the only one.."
"How about we go to the castle after sunset?"  Karina suggested, that friend who at first was excited to see Dracula.
"KARI ARE YOU CRAZY?"  Daniel said with wide eyes.  You didn't say anything.
"Y/N, you want to?"  Kari asked you.  Sweat ran down your face, you swallowed and nodded yes.  "PERFECT! THEN WE GO!"  Oooooh
You walked around Bran a bit and then at 8 o'clock you three went back to Bran Castle.  You stopped on the street in front of the castle near some houses.  "Do you hear that too?"  Karina asked.
"Kari..it's just the wind."  You said pulling out your phone to check your messages.  "Y/N put the phone down, there's no time for phones now! We're going to stay here until midnight!"  Karina shouted at you.  "TILL MIDNIGHT?"  Daniel said scared.  "Yes, do you have a problem Dany?"  Karina said angrily.
All three of you sat in the car and did things and played games to pass the time faster.  It was already 11 o'clock at night, people were starting to stop going out on the street, and the road was empty.  "Umm..Dany..Kari...I don't think I'll go investigate.." You said, you were afraid that someone would catch you.  (Not in the way that he will catch you and rape you).
"Then you stay in the car. You never know if someone will take it haha" Karina said getting out of the car with Daniel.  You looked at them as they left you alone in the car and they went to the entrance.
You looked up at the castle through the car window, next to it was iron fence, wow and the tall trees.
An hour passes and Daniel and Karina did no longer come.  What did happened to them?  You asked yourself.  You got out of the car, closed the door and went to the entrance.
You will never forget what you saw in front of your eyes at the entrance to the castle courtyard.
"What the f-" Daniel and Karina were on the floor with blood on their necks.  You quickly went and checked Karina if she was breathing and then Daniel.  They were already dead.  You looked at Karina's neck, she had two red dots on her neck.  WHAT THE?
You feel a presence behind you again.  You were afraid to look behind, but you still looked.  What you saw with your eyes will give you nightmares all your entire life.  It was a man?, dressed in black, with red eyes and blood in his mouth.  "W-who are you..?"
The creature give you a smile, but not an evil one but a warm one?  "Don't scream or you'll end up like your friends." He? Said.
"I'm Bill Kaulitz, and those behind me are Tom, Gustav and Georg," Suddenly 3 more people? appeared from behind him "they are my slaves, and they do as I say. But it seems that Tom was a bit hungry and your friends were a delicious 'dinner' for him~" He said.
"Do you mind if I ask who you are?"  He said, he reached behind his back and took a red rose with blood on it?  from behind "This is for you, to feel a little better after what you just saw with your two friends."  He gave you the red rose.
"Thank you..." You accepted the rose "My name is Y/N and please with all my heart don't kill me!"  You said with fear in your eyes.  Your words made Bill laugh.  "Awww...you're so cute, I wonder what your blood tastes like."  He said, saliva drooling from his mouth (💀)
"Please no!"  You said putting your hands above your head, trying to protect yourself from him.  Bill laughed again "You really thought I was going to do something to you, vampirel?"  Vampirel?  What the fuck is this nickname.  "Take my hand."  He said holding out his hand.  You took his hand, his hand was cold.
You didn't even have time to blink and you woke up inside the castle.  "WHAT ABOUT WITH DANIEL AND KARINA?"  You said with pain in your voice.  "They will be food for Gustav. Now stop thinking about them, and let's spend time together, iubire."  He said and invited you to sit on the bed with him.
"I like your hair, it looks so delicious, but I think your blood is even more delicious. Will you let me taste you? I won't hurt you that bad."  He asked smiling, you could see his vampire fangs in his smile.  You looked at him, you didn't say anything, you were very afraid.  Bill chuckled and placed his hand on your thigh, making you jump up.  "AHH!"
"You're so cute~" He whispered, putting his hand on your waist and pulling you closer to him.  All you could do was stay still and try to not make another sound.
He placed his hand on your neck, caressing it gently, then moved his head towards it and smelled you.  "You smell so good.." He whispered in your ear.  You started to startle from fear that you will end up like Daniel and Karina in the shortest possible time.
Bill moved his face in front of you, the distance between the two of you was at least 8 cm, which made you blush a little.  "You have such beautiful lips, dragă."  He said placing his finger on them.  "B-bill..."
"Yes Dragă?"
"Are you sure I won't end up like my friends..?"  You asked, you were still thinking about them.  Bill smiled again, his vampire fangs were visibly again.  "Only if you want this, know that it can be done at any time."
You don't know what the hell got over you and you smiled back, looking down at your feet.  "Honey. Look at me."  Bill said lifting your head so you could look at him again.
You looked into his red eyes, you don't know why but you start to like him, the way he behaved with you until now makes you start to have some feelings for this vampire.
"Ești atât de frumoasă..." Bill whispered to you softly in Romanian (I couldn't help it😭 and it means You are so beautiful).  He took you by the waist and put you on his lap, you didn't expect that and you panicked a little.  "Shhh..why are you panicking? If I wanted to kill you, I would have killed you long ago."  He said, you felt his fingers going close to your chest.  You really didn't want to imagine what would happen in a few minutes.
"How about you take off your shirt?"  He asked, waiting for an answer from you.  You could see him looking at your breasts through the fabric of your shirt.  Nothing in this life has made you as red as you are now, and besides that, you are a little ashamed.  Basically Bill just wanted to see what you looked like without the shirt and don't ask me why.
"Wh-what…?"  You said, covering your chest with your hands.  "Awwww...is my pisicuță shy somehow?"  He said playing with your hair.
"Do something good for me and take off your shirt."
You did as he said, you took off your shirt and remained only in your bra.
"Can I taste your blood..?"  he asked.  You nodded yes this time, Bill was happy.  He bared his vampire fangs and attacked your neck.  A moan of pain coming from you (KMSS💀).
"BILL!"  You screamed his name, the pain was a bit unbearable BECAUSE YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN BITED ON THE NECK BY A TRUE VAMPIRE!
While he was sucking your blood, he tried to make you calm down by stroking your bare back, and as you can see, it did work and you calmed down a little.
He sucked a little more and then he let you go.  "You have such good taste blood Y/N."  He said wiping the blood from his mouth.
"Can I kiss you?"  He clearly said this question when you didn't expect more, but you nodded yes.
He smiled and brought his face very close to yours, and connected his lips with yours.  You could taste your blood in the kiss, can I say it bothered you a little?  BECAUSE BLOOD TASTES LIKE IRON.
Not long after Bill broke the kiss and smiled at you again.
He took your waist again and looked into your eyes.
"You will stay with me forever Y/N"

jonsa inspired by “children of dune?”
thanks to the anon that messaged @esther-dot recently about parallels with the dune series, i’ve been thinking a lot about what grrm might have taken away from dune in terms of themes, reactions, plot points, and more.
i began thinking today about the end of the third book, children of dune, which rounds out what many think of as the dune trilogy. there are additional books in the series, but these are set far in the future, so children of dune can be seen as the end of the story of paul atreides which the first book began.
warning: spoilers for the entire dune series will follow, for anyone trying to avoid those!
plot summary
children of dune focuses on paul’s twin children, leto ii and ghanima atreides. when paul overthrows the imperial house corrino to become emperor himself, he marries the former emperor’s daughter, imperial princess irulan, to cement his rule. however, paul refuses to sleep with her, so at the end of his reign, his heirs are the children of his beloved concubine, the newborn twins leto and ghanima (side note: ghanima is actually the older twin).
because the twins are babies at the point when paul gives up his throne, his younger sister alia serves as regent for them. due to alia’s own tragic circumstances, she becomes an enemy to the young twins. so, the twins, who possess prescient powers similar to their father’s, plot to ensure their own safety and leto’s accession to the throne. at the age of nine, leto runs away and, while in hiding, undergoes a transformation that sees his body fuse with a mystical creature. he leaves behind his sister, ghanima, who is vulnerable to use as a pawn in others’ plots to take the throne.
eventually, leto re-emerges, having gained new skills and resolve during his time in hiding, overthrows his tyrannical aunt, and marries his sister ghanima to prevent her being used as a pawn to challenge his claim to the throne. however, the transformation leto underwent rendered him incapable of fathering children, so while he is married to ghanima, he has no intention of consummating the marriage. instead, he makes an agreement with farad’n corrino, a member of the former ruling dynasty which leto’s father had overthrown, to become ghanima’s concubine and father the future atreides line.
farad’n’s mother, a princess of house corrino, had been attempting to murder leto and ghanima to restore her own house to throne. farad’n grows disgusted with his mother’s attempts to gain the throne, leading him to join with the atreides. the agreement between leto, ghanima, and farad’n allows the atreides and corrino lines to merge their claims, thus resolving the conflict over the throne.
the story is, of course, more complex than that. it is especially important to note that leto and ghanima are hesitant to take the throne initially because they have foreseen the great personal sacrifice it will require. leto ultimately makes a sacrifice of his own personal happiness and personhood to ascend to the throne, not because he desires power or wishes to carry on his family’s legacy but because he and ghanima have foreseen a terrible threat to humankind in the future and have a plan to use the power of the throne to guide humanity to safety.
parallels
as i considered this story, the parallels to the tv show ending of king of westeros bran/queen in the north sansa began to jump out at me.
like leto, bran goes missing at a young age and during that time undergoes mystical training and a physical transformation that involves fusing with a magical creature, the weirwood tree. he eventually re-emerges, changed forever, and takes the throne. while the tv show didn’t do much with bran’s powers, the books have strong hints that they are in some way tied to one of the greatest threats to humankind, the others. (another side note: i tend to see more parallels between leto ii’s “golden path” and the targaryens’ “prince that was promised” prophecy than what’s going on with bran, especially in terms of how leto feels that mass levels of human suffering are the price he has to pay to ensure humanity’s survival. but of course grrm isn’t going to copy another story beat for beat but instead will grab the parts that resonate with him and use them to tell the story he wants to tell.)
however, bran cannot have children of his own. the tv show claims that this makes him a better candidate for the throne (???), but of course in the books it will likely be seen as a disadvantage because of the lack of a clear succession. if king bran does end up needing to designate an heir, the most likely candidate would be a descendant of his eldest living sibling: his sister, sansa.
sansa, like ghanima, starts out under threat from a tyrannical regent (multiple ones actually: cersei, tywin, lysa, littlefinger) but becomes a ruler alongside her brother at the end of the tv show. bran and sansa of course do not marry, but they are co-rulers of the continent of westeros. and, just like ghanima, sansa is bran’s only real option for an heir from his own family (arya theoretically could marry and have children, but if she’s not even in westeros at the end of the story like in the tv show, that won’t do him a lot of good)--and if bran and sansa don’t plan carefully for sansa’s future marriage and the succession of both crowns, the next generation could see the continent break out into war again.
so, much like in the case of leto and ghanima, bran has a vested interest in ensuring sansa marries someone who won’t be a threat to either of their claims.
and, you know, just like in the case of farad’n corrino, a surviving member of the dynasty bran and sansa’s father helped to overthrow could prove to be a major threat to the stability of bran’s rule. so, say, if there happened to be a targaryen still hanging around westeros somewhere at the end of the story, wouldn’t bran have a strong interest in ensuring that that person’s descendants didn’t become a threat to his rule? (especially if said targaryen had a female relative who was a princess of the former ruling house who threatened the lives of bran and/or sansa while trying to take the throne back for her own dynasty...)
just spitballing here, but if there were a male targaryen still in westeros, and sansa’s children are going to be bran’s heirs anyway, then marrying sansa to said targaryen would actually be a smart method for smoothing the way for sansa’s child to accede to the iron throne. her children would have a claim through both their mother (as the current king’s sister) and their father (as a member of the previous dynasty).
conclusions
we don’t know for sure whether grrm was influenced by the dune series, but there are some striking parallels between the journey leto ii undergoes and bran’s own journey. it is very possible grrm wrote bran in response to the character of leto ii.
there are also some interesting parallels in the struggle for the throne which children of dune sets up and the resolution of said struggle, at least in terms of the tv series’s ending. the extremely critical question of succession which the tv show so carelessly glossed over in its ending is at the heart of the resolution that frank herbert wrote for children.
that resolution involves:
1.) a boy with superhuman powers choosing to take the throne after gaining resolve through a mystical transformation
2.) sibling marriage to protect a woman’s claim from being usurped
3.) siblings as co-rulers
4.)  the monarch designating his sister’s children as his heirs because he can’t have children of his own
5.) marriage between a man of the former dynasty and a woman of the current one to resolve a dispute over the throne and hopefully belay future ones
6.) a man agreeing that his children will bear their mother’s family name rather than his own
we don’t have absolute confirmation that grrm plans to make bran king of westeros, but there is some evidence that this is one of the plot points he shared with the showrunners. the question of grrm’s interest in or influence from dune aside, the example provided by children of dune’s leto/ghanima/farad’n trio shows that if bran becomes king of westeros (and sansa and jon both live to the end of the series), a sansa/jon pairing is almost guaranteed to be the best way to secure the succession.
(and if jonsa was originally meant to be part of the story but was scrapped in later seasons, that could explain why the question of succession post-bran was addressed so sloppily by the tv show...)
Edit: now with a part 2

Does the Gift/New Gift extend over the mountains and all the way to the West Coast (south of Westwatch-by-the-Bridge), or would those lands be held by the Hill Clans? The maps are unclear.
From what Bran remembers in ASOS, all lands within 50 leagues south of the Wall are part of the Gift, even the more mountainous regions in the West. Jon explicitly says in ADWD that “…Your Grace must pass through the Norrey's lands, however. They live the nearest to the Gift and have always been good friends to the Watch” meaning the Norreys don’t live on the Gift lands (so even the more western lands don’t belong to them). According to the map book, the Gift extends all the way to the Bay of Ice, represented by the dotted lines across 25 and 50 leagues south of the Wall.

Note
Let’s see:
1. The curtain of light is mentioned only in a Bran chapter
2. The very first chapter of the first book is about an Other killing a brother of the Night’s Watch that looks like a Stark
3. Sam and Jon spend the entire series fighting wights and Others
4. all the mythology about the living dead is set in the North -thank you Old Nan-
5. Bran the Builder built a gigantic wall and a geotermal castle to stop them
But
Platinum Barbie has dragons! She’s the solution! I have connected the dots!… 🥴
part of why it’s so annoying is exactly that - the ice part of the song centers in the north, this apocalypse that’s spiraling out of control and no one cares to fight it except a few people. meanwhile, the fire part is clearly centered around dani and…her dragons are spiraling out of control and dani more and more turns a blind eye. you have so much of the northern magic in bran’s chapters, so much rich, interesting writing and information including the stupid curtain but all of that in the end is about…dani apparently. and we ignore that bran shares a name with bran the builder. we ignore that the kings of winter were doing fine for thousands of years until the targs showed up and periodically set the continent on fire every 50 years over the iron throne. we ignore that the valyrians were slavers who fell bc of a slave uprising & are still venerated by the targs & dani. we ignore that the long night happened before and *didn’t need a dragon to stop it.* ignore the CONTINENTAL WALL and ICE ZOMBIE DEFENDED CASTLE that stopped it the first time. ignore that dragons refuse to fly north of the wall.
all for…what? WHAT??? if dani is important to the endgame, let’s see the proof! “but i love her” IS NOT PROOF. I love theon’s lil flop ass, i don’t think he’s gonna single handedly defeat the long night based off a single line in arianne martell’s chapter or something. and like, i go back and forth on jonsa bc i go back and forth on everything in the endgame bc we’re two dense ass books away from it, but i will say is that the d and j/d fans loved to shout down every other reading of the text, which didn’t lead to a lot of great theories. while since i started poking around with the jonsas, even finding i have different opinions in major characters and their trajectories, the theories are *talked about*. i love stumpy’s reread bc it breaks down every theory, even ones that aren’t likely, or she doesn’t agree with, and imo that’s how a series as dense as this should be analyzed. we’re not all going to analyze it the same way but can we not pull nonsense out of our ass at least 😭😭

I think it makes sense that Bran is chosen as King during a moot but I don't think this is going to become the new way King's are chosen in Westeros going forward. I feel that BRAN is actually the "Queen Elizabeth I" of the story & a child by Sansa/Jon would be the King James I of England (6th of Scotland). I doubt GRRM can realistically do a moot in ADOS without the Lords in the room worrying over Bran's succession plan esp after all the wars we JUST saw over this issue. What do you think?
Succession is a major issue in the books, so I agree, he's gonna have to have an answer to that, anon.
I suppose when Bran became king, I assumed the idea was to keep any and all Targs off that throne (even though book Jon is a great kid), and that makes me think even his son wouldn't be allowed to inherit as Jon would have to be publicly known as a Targ in order to marry Sansa, so I'm hesitant to go there.
Although, I've read and agree with the idea that this line
"And in mine," she blazed, angry now. Why couldn't he see? "He offers his own son in marriage to our daughter, what else would you call that? Sansa might someday be queen. Her sons could rule from the Wall to the mountains of Dorne. What is so wrong with that?" (AGOT, Catelyn II)
feels like foreshadowing for Sansa's child to be Jon's and for him to be heir to Westeros. Just because this feels like one of those passages you read without it giving you pause, but after later events, you revisit and realize, holy shit, the old man told us so at the beginning!
It also tracks with the Jonsa interpretation of this line:
"Glory to your betrothed," Ser Arys answered at once. "See how it flames across the sky today on His Grace's name day, as if the gods themselves had raised a banner in his honor. The smallfolk have named it King Joffrey's Comet."
Doubtless that was what they told Joffrey; Sansa was not so sure. "I've heard servants calling it the Dragon's Tail."
"King Joffrey sits where Aegon the Dragon once sat, in the castle built by his son," Ser Arys said. "He is the dragon's heir--” (ACOK, Sansa I)
But, there’s debate about whether or not Jon is legitimate (the heir), whether or not the North goes free (is Sansa ever a queen?), and whether or not Bran will live an extra long life, whether he might actually be able to have children of his own after all, or whether Martin putting Bran on the throne indicates he will dramatically alter how kings become kings for good.
I like your suggestion a lot, I always love it when people have spec influenced by history because we know that has influenced Martin, but I'm not sure. It works with Cat’s line though!
I’ll tag @minitafan who has written about some historical parallels and may have some helpful thoughts.

Jon Chose To Protect Sansa Who He Loved the Most - It's Right There In the Dialogue and Script
I know I've already talked about this in this post, but I missed this one part of the dialogue before.
Tyrion uses several different tacks to try to get Jon to consider killing Dany. Nothing works. Not the threat to Jon himself, not the threat to the people, not Tyrion about to be executed, not being in the grip of a tyrant now that's actually worse than the Lannisters, not his code of doing the right thing -- nothing. Until Tyrion mentions Jon's sisters. When Tyrion sees this catches Jon's attention, he turns the conversation towards Sansa. And that is what eventually gets through to Jon, despite his initial protestation.
Tyrion: "And your sisters? Do you see them bending the knee?" (8x04, Sansa is saying to Jon in the Godswood "That doesn't mean I want to kneel to someone--" before she's cut off)
Jon: "My sisters will be loyal to the throne." (we know Arya is not a threat to Dany, that she's aware of anyway, I seriously doubt Arya would stand by as Sansa or Jon is about to die - but still Arya isn't the one who won't bend the knee if need be - Arya makes it clear in her scene with Jon before this that not only is Jon in danger but Sansa will not accept Dany as Queen)
Tyrion: "Why do you think Sansa told me the truth about you? Because she doesn't want Dany to be Queen."
Jon: "She doesn't get to choose."
Tyrion: "No, but you do. And you have to choose now."
youtube
So Jon makes the choice to confront Dany about what happened to KL and we get the throne room scene. Here, Jon angrily does so at first, then tries to appeal to her by asking her to forgive Tyrion (like Jorah did back in 8x02). When she refuses, he pleads with her, but it falls on deaf ears. He even starts to get a bit emotional, knowing what he may have to do. And when Dany says a certain line, he now knows what he has to do (which is reiterated by the script by the line "Jon understands what this means for those he loves most"). Sure enough, he says his goodbye to her and then stabs her in the heart.
Dany: "It's not easy to see something that's never been before. A good world."
Jon: "How do you know? How do you know it will be good?"
Dany: "Because I know what is good. And so do you."
Jon: "I don't."
Dany: "You do. You do, you've always known."
Jon: "What about everyone else? All the other people who think they know what's good?"
Dany: "They don't get to choose."
Tumblr media
And that's when he knows. That's when he makes the decision.
youtube
Not only did Jon keep his promise to protect Sansa, not only did he make the same decision Ned did back in season 1 for Sansa and for Jon himself when he was born, but he also loved Sansa the most (I mean in this scenario, when the decision between Sansa and Dany came down; he obviously loves Arya and Bran as well). It was the idea that Sansa was going to be liberated that finally got through to him and made him realize he had to make that difficult decision.
The North had already bent the knee.
Westeros had a new queen now.
The Wildlings and Ghost went back home.
Tyrion was going to be executed.
Bran and Arya weren't threats to Dany's reign from Dany's own perspective. (She knows Jon loves them both very much but they're not standing in Dany's way of her destiny and not a threat to Jon who she considers to be hers now)
They literally connected the dots for the audience.
It was Sansa. Sansa who he couldn't let Dany hurt.
Jon loved Sansa the most.
Tumblr media
Bonus:
Sansa was the one Jon always looked back with, never Dany. (that good ol' romantic trope)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Jon literally left himself (aka Ghost) with her when he had to go South to meet Dany, still as King in the North, to watch over her and protect her. (there's a reason they cut that scene and only had Sansa allude to it in 7x05 with "He can't just expect it to sit there and wait for him like Ghost." "He didn't. He trusted you to hold it for him.")
Loved. The. Most.
