Clockwise Talentswap lore pt. 1

remember the talentswap i did last year, where i shuffled everyone’s talents clockwise across the trial circle? it’s been festering in my brain this entire time and it has a plot now (oops!).

Kiibo Iidabashi - Ult. Aikido Master - Protagonist

making kiibo human removes a lot of the extremes of his character, making him both more well-adjusted and more boring. good for him?? i do think aikido principles - nonviolence, harmony with oneself and others, using your opponent’s moves against them - gel really well with a dr protagonist, though. also, to avoid having to deal with both the “professor” (an aikido master, in this au) and a pair of human parents, i’ll say his bio family died when he was young and his master took him in.

his outfit is a black aikido gi with electric blue and green accents (finally, the traditional japanese clothes he always wanted....) and he survives ‘til the end!

Tenko Chabashira - Ult. Leader - Support

vigilante girl scouts. 'nuff said.

...okay, i’ll say a bit more. cw!tenko is basically a combination of the lore from her her third FTE (it’s okay if you forgot about that, so did the writers) with canon DICE (except they’re all girls. obviously). because sometimes you gotta add a little more crime into your lesbian crime-fighters, for ✨spice✨. tenko is obviously much more open and cooperative than kokichi, so her talent gets to shine a lot more - she’s one of the de-facto leaders of the group (the other being kaito, who she comes into frequent conflict with). she becomes the support after waking up in the locker next to kiibo’s and then referencing an idol they both love, after which they’re basically inseparable.

her outfit is based on her 1-A beta design, with the skirt replaced by wide shorts to enhance the scout energy, and she also survives ‘til the end <333

Angie Yonaga - Ult. Child Caregiver - Antagonist

cw!angie admittedly finds a lot of her inspiration in my personal frustrations - lots of Negative Emotions Dishonor God™ and “everything you worked for is because of god, not you, but also if anything bad happens it’s not his fault!” here. she was raised in a cult-owned orphanage (yes, that one, although i’ve nixed the assassin bit) and was charged with indoctrinating taking care of the other children once she got old enough. her recruiting people is MUCH more of a threat here than in canon, and her deeply unhealthy spiritual beliefs are contrasted against kiibo’s healthier ones.

her outfit is a white and navy dress based on her 1-B beta design, and a yellow waist apron covered in pockets. she dies in ch5 (as antags are wont to do), murdered by kaito.

Kaito Momota - Ult. Detective - Mastermind

y’know how mastermind aus looove finding ways the canon character could be driven to do something so awful, and making them super sympathetic? this is not that. cw!kaito is an UNREPENTANT BASTARD and i love him so much. every negative trait - his arrogance, self-centeredness, hot temper, stubbornness, etc - has been turned up to eleven, with none of his positive traits to balance it out. disney villain type guy. he keeps up a mask similar to canon!kaito’s personality, though - what better way to play the hero on your murder mystery show than to be the detective?

his outfit is based on his anniversary suit, with the space lapel pins being replaced by a little magnifying glass and the inner coat pattern becoming suspiciously blood-splatter-esque. he’s executed in chapter six after a glorious third-act breakdown.

Shuuichi Saihara - Ult. Inventor - Traitor

...yeahhh, this is the part where i reveal this all started as shuuichi angst. sorry?

kaito’s not directly forcing him to work as the traitor, no blackmail or anything, but their power dynamic is still completely fucked. shuuichi no longer even sees kaito as a person - he’s larger-than-life, the avatar of danganronpa itself, a borderline god. he’s completely given up on resisting. the closest he gets are  comments about hating flashy-but-worthless inventions, which make sense once it’s revealed that he built the executions and the monokubs. (he did *not* build M1-U, and being the only person around qualified to do maintenance on her is his personal hell!)

i’m still working (read: thinking, because i am not an artist) on his outfit, so right now the only concrete aspect are heavy goggles he wears because he’s too guilty to make eye contact with his “classmates”. he’s executed in ch5 after being ordered to take the fall for angie’s murder, a pawn ‘til the end.

A romantic young man who knows every intricacies of plot and prose, and is rather oblivious to the rough spontaneity of real people. He does a lot of his work under the radar since it pays better, and he's using his talent to ensure quality care for his sick mother.

Toko Fukawa - Ultimate Cook

A neurotic and snappy student who's known for exquisite dishes that combine ingredients no one would have thought went together. She's used to the blunt and controlled environment of the kitchen, and is easily suspicious of people who don't quickly announce their presence and intentions.

Hi so um. Somehow just got into danganronpa is 2022 and spent too much time going through your talent swap au and it rocks. It doesn’t seem like you’ve posted about it in a while but I’d love to hear more if you’re still invested in it!

Specifically, I’d be interested in the relationship between all the THH survivors. How do junko and hifumi feel about each other after Mukuro death, as former sister and best friend? How about hiro? I know everyone, especially sakura, holds a fair bit of resentment for his role in hinas death - how does that work when the survivors are all each other have left?

Hi! Welcome to hell. It's been a while since I seriously thought about my thh swap (i've been thinking a lot more about my v3 one, which i'll post today) but i'll do my best to answer your questions! they're still my blorbos lol

Junko and Hifumi (and really, Junko and all the survivors) have a strained relationship. Hifumi is the only person who knew Mukuro anywhere near as well as Junko did, but they find each other intolerable, and while Hifumi knew her well, he still had his memory erased. He wants to find out as much as he can about her, but Junko doesn't want to talk about her much, and it's hard to tell if she's being serious.

Hiro is at the crux of a lot of resentment too. Everyone knows it was implicitly his choices that lead to Hina's death, even if it wasn't really anybody's fault. He and Junko, despite not exactly liking each other, are in somewhat similar positions, and for a while, they're forced together out of necessity because nobody really wants to talk to either of them. Over time, they form as much of a bond as they're able to, but it's tenuous for a whole host of reasons.

The survivors aren't as close as the ones in canon, just by virtue of who they are, but they're still going to stick together. Even if it's out of sheer necessity.

Talentswap! Ult. Astronaut Junko and Ult. Fashionista Kaito.

As for backstory... Junko decides being an astronaut will give her a lot of sway over the public and let her get away to space, where no one can physically get to her to interfere. And maybe traveling to other planets or even other galaxies wouldn't be boring? She had this thought due to a chance encounter with some guy who talked it up to her...

Meanwhile, Kaito gets diagnosed with a serious illness pretty young, which means he can never meet the health requirements to be an astronaut. Pursuing something related like engineering or astronomy feels like "giving up", so his grandparents encourage him to pursue unrelated things that make him happy. (In a slightly different world, this is the origin of Ult. Gardener Kaito.) By that point he'd already started dyeing his hair plus getting his uniform altered, so he decided to try and connect with people over that. (Baby Kaito fresh from the boonies wandering through Harajuku......) Not every fashion decision of his is great, but he's infectiously confident to the point that people want to promote him, and he ends up starting trends and getting big in magazines and online. He's still passionate about space, but inspiring people to be true to themselves by finding their own style is very fulfilling to him.

To be clear, Junko's still Ult. Despair in this AU, not Kaito. She gets famous as the youngest person to go space by her second year at Hope's Peak and probably ends up founding a Mars colony or something equally absurd (spoiler alert: it goes murderously badly for people who end up there). She sets off the Tragedy remotely from orbit. Maybe the V3 kids end up launched into space for a killing game. I assume aliens appear at some point because that seems about the level of nonsense to expect from the DR universe.

Unfortunately, I think Kaito is probably a massive Junko fan. He tells the story of how he totally inspired her to be an astronaut, and no one believes him, but then she shows up and actually knows him?????? If there is a V3 equivalent killing game, he might be the traitor... or the mastermind 😲 Alternatively he's deeply hurt by her betrayal and ends up inspiring the rest of the class to take up the Ult. Hope mantle in opposition to her (I assume he still dies of his illness no matter what 😔).
