Lighting workshop
I participated in the lighting and photography workshop this week, we practiced setting up and lighting a portrait for the theme Disrupt. In groups we used automatic features on our phone camera to contrast a well-lit portrait with one disrupted using different materials and poses.
Following an introduction to the DSLR camera, we carried out the exercise again with studio cameras, lighting a setup with the manual shutter speed and aperture settings. Resources on camera work were given to us so we could expand on the session for the future.
After the workshop we can return to the studio, after being introduced to the area I am confident in lighting work from previous workshops
Here are some of the photos me and my group member took:
These two photos were took using the slow shutter speed function on the camera while moving bright lights behind

here we layered different materials in front of the camera and added orange and purple lights for a galaxy effect

Project: Disrupt
Week 2: Monday, 16/10/2023
I did the Photography workshop on Monday , and was given an introduction to Studio lighting and set up, and did a few portrait shots as a exercise using different lighting and "filters" to gain different affects and experiment with different out comes.
Tumblr media
We started off using the automatic features on our phones and took some normal portraits before experimenting and disrupting these portraits with different poses and coloured lights. We used a red light and pointed it from different angles gaining different interesting results, we also tried putting a piece of red plastic over the camera lense created a red filter.
Tumblr media
Using different phone cameras resulted in different quality photos, some of my photos were taken with my own phone and the photos me with red light were taken on A.J's phone. These photos of A.J were taken with their phone (which is brand new with a high quality camera) , and the quality was way better than my phone as you can see. With A.J, we also started with a basic portrait and then experimented with some slightly different poses, and then by reflecting light onto a golden reflective material from their side and then from behind them.
Tumblr media
These were also taken with A.J's phone, and we tried using a large translucent sheet of plastic and shined a bright light behind it while one of us posed. We used different coloured pieces of clear plastic in front of the camera, and interestingly enough the orange plastic would turn into a light warm grey (top left picture), we had to reposition and refocus the camera many times before it settled on orange, we had similar problems with the red plastics at times.
Tumblr media
After being shown how to use the DSLR camera we continued the to take a variety of different portraits using different methods once more but with the DSLR. I had a bit of difficulty adjusting to using it but managed to somewhat grasp it in the end. Here we experimented with the light projector and placed coloured plastic over it, and projected it onto the wall. I'm realising now that we used mainly red in this exercise and I think it suits the theme of disruption. I feel like red is a very disruptive colour, maybe its because red is often used as a warning colour, both in everyday life and in the wild.
Tumblr media
For our Project : Disrupt, an idea I had for my security camera concept was that while the p.o.v was switching cameras, in between switches a "normal" portrait in the background would change and become disrupted, distorted even, and switch back. But shown long enough to have the viewer second guessing themselves. As a reference for this I posed with this baby I found lying around and shot a impromptu Madonna and child. ( left image normal, right image disrupted)
Tumblr media
"Baby in a frame, I know, I know it's serious~" - The smiths (probably)
It's a framed baby, in a frame, with a lizard. If I had another frame I would've tripple framed it. This was completely self indulgent.
Overall, I now know that I just about know how to navigate the studio and light work from other workshops. I feel that I may need to revisit this workshop in the future or do my own research to gain a clearer understanding, but I just about have a grasp on it.

Portraits I took today during the workshop. Got to experiment with the camera on my phone and learn the basics of a dslr camera. We used various plastics and different lighting/backdrops to create a distorted portrait, playing into the whole ‘disrupt’ theme.

Studio lighting and camerawork, 13/11/23
In todays workshop, we learned about the importance that lighting plays in our photography and how to use it to your advantage.
In the first half we used our phone cameras to take pictures of our partner, for this I was partnered with Aoife and we played around with ringlights, torches, props and the projector in the darkroom to take portraits of eachother. We focused on creating a disruption within these portraits.
Then in the second half of the workshop we learned how to use a DSLR camera and the important relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. We then got to try out these cameras and focused on using a slower shutterspeed to capture the effects of moving light.
These skills will be useful to me in my project as I photograph my dogs quite often, they are real posers for the camera.

Disrupt
On moday I attended the lighting workshop. The main focus of the workshop was to create portraits and to disrupt them using light, materials and poses. First we paired up and used our mobile phones cameras to take photos for the exercise.
Then after introduction to the DSLR camera, we reapeted the task using the studio cameras. We prepared light and manually set up the combination of shutter, speed and aperature.
Afterwards we were provided with resource materials on camera logistics so that we could expand on workshop afterwards. I am planning to use the workshop space and knowledge I acquired to improve my lighting work in other workshops.

Disrupt Project - Lighting workshop
On Monday I participated in the lighting workshop, we set up spaces to take portrait photos of each other and got familiar with the utilities and lighting equipment in the space, all of the photos are based on the Disrupt theme.
In groups, we used our phone cameras automated functions to compare results of normal portrait shots to disrupted shots that included fabrics, unique lighting and poses that disrupted the normality of the photos.
After we were introduced to the DSLR camera we then did this exercise again with the more advanced equipment and manual settings on the camera for a mixture of shutter speed and aperture.
Resources on camera work were given to us so we could expand the work we are doing in the workshop.
After being introduced to the workshop I now feel comfortable to revisit the studio and use it for work from other workshops.
Some photos taken of myself with the phone camera disrupted with sheer sequinned fabric in-front of the camera.
I edited the middle photo on photoshop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some of the photos that I took of a member from my group. My group came up with the idea to use the slow shutter speed function and move a torch in the dark to capture the movement and lines from it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After I saw how the photos came out I noticed how the light patterns are similar to the photos I took of the moving cars on the motorway in the previous post so I have a plan to use the torches and slow shutter speed function on the DSLR camera to copy the light patterns from the photos in the studio.

Photography workshop
On Tuesday morning I attended the Photography workshop as some of my ideas for my project involve photography. Paul taught us to slow down with our cameras and take decent quality photos. I learned about lighting and how to set up a good shot, as well as the basics of a DSLR camera.
I thought the workshop was really fun and we got to play around with loads of materials.
Below are some of my favorite's from the workshop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the dark, hazy mood in this image. We had the shutterspeed on the camera set to 1 so that the result would be blurred.
i really enjoyed playing with light in the photographs aswell. It brings in a pop of colour.
The first photo is my favourite one from the workshop. we set up a sheet Infront of the camera and i shone a red light through the sheet to reflect back onto Leah. I think its really atmospheric. The image reminds me of 'Piss Christ' by Andres Serrano.

16/10/2023: Disrupt Brief
This week I decided to do the lighting workshop. In this workshop, we were introduced to the studio space and used it to set up and light a portrait for an exercise based on the Disrupt Brief.
We started out by splitting into teams and taking standard evenly lit portraits on our phones and then disrupting them by adding different lighting and effects using a variety of different materials and poses.
This was a evenly lit portrait taken of me by Ryan using my phone:
Tumblr media
These are a couple of portraits I took of Ryan using a torch covered with red plastic:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found it particularly fascinating how the same light could achieve such a different colour and effect depending on it's placement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To achieve a ghost-like effect we suspended a sheet of plastic from a bar and then positioned a light behind it, I then stood between the light and the sheet so that my silhouette would be projected on the sheet. As the sheet was somewhat sheer, my hands were partially visible which resulted in an interesting effect. In order to get different coloured images, we held pieces plastic in varying colours in front of the lens of the phone camera. We then swapped and Ryan stood behind the sheet instead of me and we took these shots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were then given an introduction to the DSLR camera we repeated the same exercise as before but instead swapping the phone cameras with studio cameras to light a set up using the manual setting for a mixture of shutter speed and aperture. These were the results of our experimentation with DSLR cameras.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This workshop made me feel more comfortable working within the space and gave me a greater understanding of how both photography and lighting work.

Studio Lighting and Camerawork Workshop with Paul Tarpey
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The exercises we did today were based around the disrupt theme.
I got to know the studio space and equipment as we set up and learned how to light a portrait. In taking the portraits, we were looking for an even light.
Tumblr media
We worked in groups to take pictures with the cameras on our phones. The cameras on our phones have automatic features when taking a photo. We took portrait shots and disrupted them with a variety of materials and props.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were introduced to the DSLR camera. It was briliant to take pictures on it! I learned how to set the manual settings with both shutter speed and aperture.
Tumblr media
We experimented with different lighting and different angles. I edited some of the photos after to up the contrast, shadows and enhance the warm tones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was just a selfie I took messing with the green light positioned under my face but I really like the symmetry the light and shadows created on my face.
Tumblr media
After this workshop, I feel comfortable that I could revisit the studio to take photos and light my work from other workshops.

This week's workshop was the lighting workshop in the photography room, where we set up different lights, learned how to use a camera, and use different materials to make the photos more interesting. We worked in small groups to help get the best lighting for the photos we took with phone and dslr cameras.
I revisited the space the days after the workshop, using the light projector to trace the shapes made from different sorts of wire, as I thought that could be an interesting background for the portrait I work on. I also took some portrait photos of myself with high contrast shadows falling on the face, also with a dark background, similar to Caravaggios chiaroscuro technique, which I thought would work quite well

Morning workshop
Today in the studio lighting and photography workshop we focused on the basic techniques of photography which started out by first taking simple portraits using our phone cameras.
After having an introduction to the studio lighting and props we had the opportunity to explore ideas and take an array of images. We then moved onto using a DSLR camera before the workshop was over and had sometime to capture images using a digital camera. I learned a lot about the process of capturing photos in the studio which made me more comfortable with using the space again.
