Records now held at #LondonMetropolitanArchives show that nearly three hundred years ago, in #1723, the parish register recorded the #christening of a girl named Sarah Ecco at St Mary’s Church, #willesden . This makes Sarah the earliest known #record of a Black person being born and living in Brent. From other details and #parishrecords at the #church, we know that she not only had a father called Tobias, but also younger brothers called Tobias, John, Edward and William, although sadly William died young. 'Britannia Pacificatrix', is one of five Foreign Office murals by the #artist #SigismundGoetze (1866-1939) who is buried in #Paddington Old #Cemetery in Brent. Starting in 1914 and taking seven years to complete the work, the #murals – Britannia Pacificatrix depicts #Africa as a small, naked Black child – in recent years, the appropriateness of the works in a space in which #foreign #dignitaries are greeted has been called into question. STORIES FROM BY THE CUT OF THEIR CLOTH: Susann '[Carnival] was the first time I had been in a Black community and so sort of brought into the bosom of that community, and had very much a family connection reason to be there and was validated in a big way. So I am sharing with you the validity that I have as a mixed race person to have been privileged around that time and in that community and around that place in history.' In the UK, Bank Holiday August is Notting Hill Carnival. Carnival came up several times with our By The Cut of Their Cloth participants. None more so than Susann, who shared how much Carnival has shaped her sense of identity and belonging. Born in the 1960s, of mixed Black Jamaican and white British parentage, Susann saw our Open Call and got in touch to share histories and memories that relate to her partner, Russell Henderson, who lived for many years in Kensal Rise until his death in 2015. Russell, was one of the founders of Notting Hill carnival, and in her piece Susann shares the importance of carnival to her identity. While Notting Hill Carnival does not itself take place it Brent, it is heavily attended by residents from the borough who are among its 2.5 million visitors. It is likely that many of those who are also from Black mixed race backgrounds like Susann, share her feelings about what it means to attend or be part of this key Black British event. To see Susann’s wonderful photos of Russell, carnival, and her family, as well as her thoughtful and evocative audio reflections on identity and community, visit our By The Cut of Their Cloth exhibition (link) in bio and go to 'Family Stories/Susann #carnival #nottinghill #identity #belonging #mixed #mixedrace #community #BlackBritish Posted @withregram • @themixedmuseum (at Notting Hill Carnival) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiAAd94t_4X/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

📣NEVER BEFORE SEEN IMAGES FROM FASHIONING OUR HISTORY📣 🎉It’s been a year since the Fashioning our History Exhibition! @foh.brent 🎉 To #celebrate this #achievement, Here are some never before seen images from the Fashioning our History project, the seed that flourished, allowing the BTCOTC exhibition to be born (link in the bio!) The photographs feature local model, mother and business owner, Jade Powell @jaydeshenise of #Jamaican #heritage and were taken around #WillesdenGreen Highroad on a #Colour #Film #Camera in May 2021. The camera was forgotten about and put into storage and later developed with the other film photography that was taken during the BTCOTC photography workshop. I was shocked and pleasantly surprised when I found that 27 Images had belonged to the previously forgotten film camera I used on the day the team photographed the Fashioning Our History Ensemble in Willesden Green. The Exhibition displayed a hand-illustrated #fashion #installation piece inspired by elements of the participant's work and the fashion of the #18thcentury #mantuagown were created by myself and the team. 📹 Stories from By The Cut of Their Cloth: Muriel ➡A story of the Sri Lankan diaspora Muriel grew up in Sri Lanka with her mother and sibling. Muriel’s mother had become a single parent in the 1960s and life wasn’t easy. When she was a young girl, Muriel met Ralph who was of mixed Sri Lankan and English heritage. He was at an all boys school while Muriel was at an all girls school. Due to where they lived and the closeness of both schools, Ralph and Muriel ended up taking the same bus to school so that they could meet each other. Ralph became Muriel’s first boyfriend. In October 1977, Ralph came over to the UK, after having worked very hard for his fare. Ralph had lots of family members living in the UK so he felt it would be a fresh start for himself and Muriel to get married there and start their family. When she arrived in the UK, Muriel remembers that everyone in the UK was mourning the death of Elvis Presley. Ralph used to have long phone calls with Muriel while she was still living in Sri Lanka and Ralph would tell her that all his cousins were crying because Elvis had died. Life in London gave Muriel a new extended close family through Ralph’s relatives, as well as a family of her own. However, life with Ralph wasn’t always easy, particularly as Muriel began to develop her own sense of independence. 🔷Read more of Muriel’s moving and empowering story at our By The Cut of Their Cloth exhibition. You can find Muriel’s story over on BTCOTC under Brent Stories: Muriel [link in bio]. Muriel was one of a number of Brent residents who shared their personal stories with us at our Open Days. These ‘ordinary’ stories of multiculturalism and mixedness in the borough as told by family members form the backbone of our exhibition. We hope they encourage you to record and share your own stories with family, friends or even your local archive for future generations to learn from. BTCOTC is a collaborative project between @foh.brent and The Mixed Museum, supported by @brentmuseumandarchives and funded by @heritagefunduk as part of the #BeingBrent Heritage Wellbeing Fund 2021. #mixedrace #interracial #SriLanka #familyhistory #archive #diaspora #Brent #women (at London Borough of Brent) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfZcr_bto7J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

📹Stories from By The Cut of Their Cloth digital exhibition at The Mixed Museum @themixedmuseum ZADIE SMITH PORTRAIT in ICONS OF COLOUR EXHIBITION 📢EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE CURATORIAL TEAM! Zadie Smith is a critically acclaimed writer of mixed Black Jamaican and white British heritage. Born in Willesden, in the London Borough of Brent, her debut novel ‘White Teeth’ explored the lives of interracial families and friendships in a post-war Willesden setting. At the end of 2019, @brentmuseumandarchives hosted the stunning exhibition ‘Icons of Colour: Portraits of Brent’s Change Makers.’ The exhibition celebrated Brent’s rich multicultural heritage by sharing stories of inspirational people of colour associated with the area. Created in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), the exhibition displayed the stories alongside portraits connected to Brent from the NPG’s collection. One of the highlights of the exhibition was a new portrait of Zadie Smith by artist Toyin Ojih Odutola. Commissioned by the NPG, the painting – entitled ‘Sadie’, Smith’s given name - was displayed for the very first time in Zadie’s home borough of Brent. As part of the By The Cut of the Cloth project, project Creative Director @warren_reilly conducted interviews with key members of the curatorial team of the Icons of Colour exhibition: Francesca Laws (Schools Programmes Manager at the @nationalportraitgallery and Aisha Tahir (Heritage Assistant at Brent Museum and Archives). 📹 Stories from By The Cut of Their Cloth: Dr Hastings Banda and Merene French ➡An affair between the President of Malawi and a married Englishwoman Born around 1898 in a small village in Nyasaland, Hastings Kamuzu Banda worked as a miner and clerk before a Black American church sponsored his education in the USA. After completing his high school education and a university degree, he graduated from medical school in Tennessee in 1937. Banda came to Britain, but his American qualifications did not allow him to practise here, so in 1938 he went to Edinburgh, where he obtained a medical degree in 1941. When the British colonial government refused to employ him on the same terms as European doctors, he abandoned his plan to return to Nyasaland and instead set up a practice in the poorest part of Liverpool. Later drafted to North Shields, he met married white Englishwoman Merene French with whom he started an affair. After the war, Banda followed Merene to London, where he worked as a GP. At first he lodged with Merene, her husband William and their son Peter, in Willesden before buying a large semi-detached property in Brondesbury Park where all four lived together. William eventually divorced Merene in 1955 leaving her and Banda to continue their relationship. During this time, Banda was deeply involved in the politics of Nyasaland, and many African politicians visited the pair’s home. Eventually the pair moved to the Gold Coast where Banda rose to political power, becoming President of Malawi in 1960. The pair’s affair had mostly been kept secret but as Banda’s visibility as a key African leader increased over the years, there was increasingly no room for Merene, a white woman, by his side. She returned to England in the late 50s, never to see Banda again. You can find the fuller account of the affair between the couple as written by our volunteer historian Dick Weindling over at our By The Cut of Their Cloth digital exhibition, under the Archival Discoveries section. 🎉🚢🇯🇲ITS WINDRUSH DAY! 🎉🚢🇯🇲 Today marks celebration of HMT Empire Windrush arriving at Tilbury Docks in Essex. The ship carried the first Caribbean migrants to the UK to help rebuild Britain after the Second World War. In our new FREE online exhibition, we celebrate Brents's fierce relationship with those connected to the Windrush Generation. You can find this in our MULTICULTURAL BRENT section of the exhibition under THE WEST INDIAN COMES TO WILLESDEN. (Link in the Bio) @themixedmuseum @brentmuseumandarchives @tnluk @nationallotterygoodcauses @heritagefunduk @brentcouncil @brentcultureservice “We were taught to love the mother country only to find that our mother didn’t love us.” This section of the exhibition was inspired by a fascinating 1961 report we found in Brent Museum and Archives of the same name. The study enables us to discuss and highlight the importance of the presence of Caribbean migrants in Brent. The report, commissioned by the Willesden International Friendship Council and authored by Mrs Joan Maizels of the Willesden Citizens Advice Bureau, provides a glimpse into the types of attitudes held by white residents of Willesden towards recent Caribbean settlers in the area. We also provide a brief overview of the journey of Caribbean migrants to the area, inspired by material we found in Brent Museum and Archives. Most notably, we feature highlights of the Windrush Exhibition held at The Library at Willesden Green in 2018. How will you celebrate Windrush Day?
