It is time for

Last year the Dazzling Pink Precure were supposed to host the event but were unavailable due to being redesigned, but this time they are ready for the job!

(revisits to old familiar stuff don’t qualify for an award unless I had forgotten everything about it, Doremi is ineligible since I've only seen 1/5th so far)

Unexpectedly I managed to finish quite a lot of stuff on my last year's "plans for 2020 list".

As for blog stuff, this year the Precure Chibi Project was concluded for the designs that exists so far, but obviously it will continue when more are released and I'd also like to draw some more of the civilian clothes too. But this year over 400 chibis were drawn...

Then we of course had the Precure Dress Tournament, with Cure Magical emerging as the winner. Hosting it was a lot of fun since I like graphs and numbers, as the fact that I keep a google sheet that documents the dates when I draw the chibis (it also calculates useful data such as how many percent I've finished).

(Also Megumi's heart dress should totally have won the tournament)

The Precure positivity posts were also a thing this year. Usually the franchise is bitched at here at Mahou-Furbies so I tried to say something nice about each Cure that I had seen. Which was a major struggle in some cases but hopefully they don't come across as too much damning with faint praise. I plan on writing similar posts for the Cures from the other seasons too as I watch them, but also because I managed to write an entire post about Mana without complaining I take that as justification that I get to write a huge bitchy "the flaws of the Precure franchise" post later.

And then now at the end of the year the Dazzling Pink Precure finally managed to emerge again with their new designs. I hope I'll be able to post more about them in 2021!

And now, the Mahou-Furbies 2020 magical girl awards!

Let's start with Best Henshin Design: Megumi Moka from Magia Record! I always love a good sweets theme and I can't get over how cute she is.

(Kikko from Concrete Revolutio was also a strong contender)

Best Team Design goes to Nogi Wakaba Is a Hero, I've always loved the YuYuYu henshin outfit design.

The Best Powerup Look award goes to Lala's Cancer form in the Star Twinkle Precure movie! I just really like the fresh colour palette...

Runner-up is Nagisa's MagiReco Valentine's outfit which I like for being sweets themed but I guess it's more like an alternate form than a powerup?

There weren’t that many contenders for Best Civilian Design but let’s say that since I like the casual outfits in KiraKira Precure in general, The Movie was also good at this. So let’s reward Ciel’s look, it’s nice to see a more muted colour palette in Precure every now and then!

Oh, right! Also everyone from the Star Twinkle Precure movie! Love all their outfits. 

Best School Uniform is the one from Sukoyaka Middle School, from Healin' Good Precure! I like the colour palette, and the cut of the dress.

The uniforms from the Twin Angel franchise are also fun with their cherry ribbon.

Best Hair award goes to Kikko, from Concrete Revolutio! The "rectangular" cut ends are fun.

Best Magical Item is Mamika's wand from Re:Creators! There's really nothing special about it, I just think it looked nice enough with the candy cane and the heart crystal (and also not so merchandise driven since this isn't a kid show).

The Best Henshin Scene award goes to Sudachi from MagiReco! I don’t like how detailed all the body curves are drawn in the few seconds before her outfit appears, but otherwise there’s great backgrounds in this, starting from the space theme, twinkling stars, beautiful blue sky and then ending with cute hearts.

Best Fan Creation award goes to Marighoul’s comic “First Hunt”! (read it here) It was a fun little story and the colours were amazing!

Best Relationship is Hikaru and Lala with the alien in the Star Twinkle movie! I would never have guessed that I’d enjoy Precures raising a “baby” mascot this much, but it is true! I love how much role their bond had in the story, and the conclusion was more epic than anything Precure has managed to offer elsewhere. 

The Best Mascot of 2020 is... the aforementioned alien UMA! Unusual design for a girl show, doesn’t have an annoying voice or speech pattern (or in fact doesn’t talk at all), and has an interesting role in the story.

Second place is Nyatoran from Healin' Good Precure, he pairs well with Hinata and I love the scene where she records cat videos of him with her phone.

As for Best Supporting Character, this is a joke character, but I have to say Mayune from Pretear. I'm sorry I just like this kind of dumb diva characters (with the o-ho-ho laugh!) and always had a good time when she was on screen.

Discount Tuxedo Mask from the Twin Angel franchise was also fun, he had nice chaotic energy to him.

Best Visual goes to Kikko's magical effects from Concrete Revolutio! We always get the standard sparkles so I was so happy to see something different for once.

Best Audio award goes to Pretear OP! The song feels a bit dated but in a good way, this is just the kind of music I like.

The Best Scene award goes to Healin' Good Precure attack!

Usually in Precure I really don't care for the stock attack animation and instead just focus on the henshins, but in this one I really like the bit where the giant hands rip the element spirit out of the enemy. The music is so good in that part, and the huge hands compared to the tiny spirit feel majestic.

I also liked Re:Creators scene where the (in-story) writers create a powerup for their character by getting their audience excited about it by tweeting. It was dumb how a tweet from some ranobe author goes viral in a matter of seconds, but I still thought the scene was fun and worked well.

The Innovation Award for doing something magical girl related I haven't seen dozens of times already goes to Happy Seven! I thought it was fun how the main character wasn't on the magical girl team at all and instead was practically the Muggle friend for most of the story!

Re:creators is the runner up here with its "fictive characters show up in our world" story, but I think it could have done more with the idea, and I think Happy Seven is commendable for doing something that feels refreshing without having to be all smart and self-aware about it.

Then the Golden Mana Award for one thing that I really didn't like this year. 

The questionable honour goes to Meguru's unbearable behaviour at the start of Twin Angel Break, when she keeps pushing her friendship on the blue girl who has made it very clear that she'd rather be left alone. And of course the blue girl is secretly lonely and ultimately caves in so Meguru faces no consequences for being selfish and entitled and having zero respect for other people's boundaries. Stuff like this fuels my rage at the Friendly-And-Energetic-Stock-Magical-Girl-Heroines.

For Best Character I want to pick Lala from the Star Twinkle movie but she won Best Character last year so let’s pick someone else. To be fair nobody (else) this year made me super excited, but leaving such a broad category as this completely empty would be really stupid, so the winner is Himeno, from Pretear!

She had a lot more multifaceted personality than I initially predicted, had interesting and different relationships with many different characters, and of course had many unique henshin!

And finally, Best Work of the year... I know I picked Star Twinkle as the best series last year (award has been renamed now) so this feels somehow redundant, but I still can't get over how enjoyable their film was and as you may have noticed it has been mentioned in plenty of other awards already so it deserves the spot. On principle I liked that it wasn't centered around the pink Cure for once, and additionally it was about Lala who is my favourite Cure, and also since there wasn't really a villain the plot was more interesting than the same old "bad guy wants to take over the world". Also great visuals.

And that’s it for 2020! It has been a weird year, but that didn’t really show on this blog.

clara/sugarplum fairy: sakuya. i want to see him go through a costume & hair transformation sequence, not gonna lie. 

nutcracker/prince eric: juza. obviously he has to be the ruler of the land of sweets.

mouse king: sakyo or chikage. i want one of them to wave around a sceptre and say quotes like “i’ll reduce the Nutcracker to a pile of splinters"

pimm: taichi... pimm is a spy :O who has to do dirty work :O but the real reason is i just want taichi to follow around sakyo again or maybe even chikage this time lol

major mint & captain candy: tsuzuru and citron respectively. mint is pretty serious and awkward, candy is a lot friendlier- i just think it’ll be a good way to insert some humor in the play

rapunzel: kazunari. obviously. actually, kazu has a lot of similarities with her: a good artist, patient, adventurous, quick thinking, hardly ever complains- also he’d look good with long hair i think ><

gothel: omi. there is an action fighto scene + also just the theme of omi playing villains lol... also THERE’S A SCENE WHERE GOTHEL PRETENDS TO BE RAPUNZEL BY WEARING A LONG WIG AND BOI- KAZU AND OMI’S BODY BUILDS ARE SO DIFFERENT BUT IT’D BE FUNNY IF THE PRINCE FALLS FOR THE TRAP ANYWAY

ONE PUNCH MAN (the obvious 1st choice lol)

Genre: Action/ Shounen

Expectation: OP protagonist with riveting backstory fights to become the strongest hero, makes many friends along the way who recognize his talents and pure heart, big bad scary villains make him stronger

Reality: OP protagonist is already the strongest hero. His backstory? After fighting a lobster-man with nipples drawn on him with a Sharpie, Saitama decides to do a workout routine every day, and somehow ends up becoming the most powerful known being in the universe. His main issue is that now, he literally can take down any villain with a single punch, and he’s very bored of it.

Best Qualities: Animation is bomb, music is dope, humor is funnie, and Best Boy is a man whose superpower is riding a bicycle. Also Saitama egg head

If you were in a coma for all of 2015, this is the main thing u missed. Moving on.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki)

Genre: Romance/ Comedy/ Slice of Life

Expectation: Smol shoujo protag girl grows closer to her oblivious crush through a fated, if awkward, incident which reveals an embarrassing secret that has to be kept at all costs. Through one another they gain more quirky friends, help each other grow, and, eventually, the male lead realizes that what he needs has been beside him all along.

Reality: The crush writes romance manga, and that is literally all the man cares about. It’s not a secret, but when he told people they didn’t believe him. Nozaki and Sakura grow closer, but only because he confuses her confession with a request to be his Beta. They gain quirky friends through one another, but there is zero character development throughout the entire fucking cast. Every episode is run by Idiot Plot. All the characters share a singular brain cell. There’s a tall butch lady turning every girl in the school gay. Please watch

Best Quali-teas: Everyone is baby, lots of gay shenanigans, and toxic masculinity does not exist, the OP is pretty nice, too

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. / Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan

Genre: Shounen/ Supernatural/ Fucking Everything tbh

Expectation: Slice-of-life supernatural where protag has psychic powers, albeit limited ones, and has to keep them a secret at all costs for fear of his safety. He has a few friends he loves and cherishes, and at least two girls who are in love with him that he has to choose between-- all of which are people he wants to protect from his double-life.

Reality: Kusuo is very aware that he is the protagonist of an anime, and he does not want to be. Born with pink hair? He rewrites the human genome to make colored hair normal. End of the world looming? He just keeps rewinding time so he doesn’t have to deal with it. Harem situation? He actively uses his powers to avoid all love interests at all times (see the above). The plot of each episode is him trying to stop the plot as quickly as possible without killing anyone. The main issue is that everyone around him is either dumb or just generally attractive to plot-driving circumstances, and they all, for some reason, want him to be in on their adventures.

Best Qualities: Heavy “me and the boys” energy, plenty of Idiot Plot, so funny that my 47yo mom who hates anime admitted that it’s funny, meta as fuck, occasionally sweet scenes, equally good dub and sub, Saiki is babie

The fandom for this shit is like. Nonexistent. Apparently it came out the same season as Mob Psycho 100, so that might be why. I almost didn’t watch it, but I got bored and it turned out to be a serious gem. Go watch if ur having a bad day, it will make u cry laughing

Sakamoto Desu Ga/ Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto

Genre: Slice of life/ Comedy

Expectation: God I don’t even know. I’d say a typical slice of life where the quiet kid is bullied but makes friends, there’s a love triangle as they grow up together through high school, yadda yadda, but look at this dude. I can’t imagine him being anything other than what he is-- a legend.

Reality: The entire show is just a question of how extra one man can be, and how well he can pull it off. Sakamoto is an “average” high school senior (in the sense that he has no supernatural abilities), but he’s....far more than that. He’s Sebastian Michaelis if he’d never been a demon. Everything always works out for him in the most ridiculous of ways-- he’s just that good. He makes a McDonald’s uniform look like Prada. He’s so smooth his bully ends up having a crush on him (and yes, it is a gay crush. no heteros in this show). 

Best Qualities: lots of homo content. the side characters, inspired by Sakamoto’s grace, all become better people, and you root for them. The circumstances are always average, but the presentation is fucking riveting. Watch to send ur depression into remission.

Another one no one talks about????? U all were so busy with ur broku no hero macadamias and ur Nartoes that you slept on this. Now’s the time to take back what was lost. Love yourself and binge this shit. 

Nichijou/ My Ordinary Life

Genre: Slice of Life/ Comedy

Expectation: Cute girls do cute, girly things and have fun with Their Close Good Friends (TM).

Reality: Cute girls get into very bizarre situations with extremely manic energies. Sometimes, the situations are normal, but the girls react in a bizarre, manic fashion. It will make you alarm-laugh.

Best Qualities: Adorable art style, little continuity, relatable as fuck

A nice little watch if you’re bored. I think the eps are on YouTube.

Pop Team Epic/ Poputepepiku

Genre: Only God Knows

Expectation: Probably a cutesy 4koma-type thing with 2 schoolgirls having shenanigans.

Reality: A regular acid trip with lesbian icons Popuko and Pipimi who are not schoolgirls, but gods. Like if Eric Andre and Hannibal Buress were turned into omnipotent anime icons. Watch at your own risk.

Best Qualities: Lots of unexpected parodies and references amongst a shitpost of a show. The OP is a bop. Popuko terrifies me, but also empowers me as a young woman because she will not hesitate to kill a bitch. She and Pipimi love each other a whole lot, so it is LGBTQ content, which is always a plus. 

I’m sure you’ve seen this one floating around. It will make you feel fear, and then laugh. Now, finally...

Ouran Highschool Host Club

Genre: Romance/ Comedy

Expectation: The protagonist is a girl who is mistaken for a boy and must be the servant of six rich, handsome young men, all of which are in love with her, and her secret must be kept at all costs. A reverse harem anime with plenty of fanservice.

Reality: Haruhi is a genderfluid queen who doesn’t give a fuck what others think she is. Because she broke a Conveniently-Placed Vase and is relatably poor, she has to pay off her debt by being a host herself-- which means male-presenting when flirting with her female classmates to make her dough. The six rich, handsome young men all share three brain cells, and most of those cells go to the character who has one line per episode (usually, it’s “Yeah”. I hope that VA got paid well). The only love interest-- the “leader” and most popular of the six men-- is so dead-set on their club being his Found Family, he confuses his romantic feelings for Haruhi with paternal ones. This is obvious to everyone but him. He never gets the brain cells. 

Best Qualities: Trans characters!! Lesbians!! Extreme “me and the boys” energy, except they’re all rich, so shenanigans skyrocket. Many 4th wall breaks. The most powerful Host looks like he’s 5. Any “fanservice” is never played straight. Takes the Found Family trope to a whole new level. Nice Parks & Rec-quality balance between hysterical and sweet. Everyone is in drag at some point.

I know all of us senior citizens grew up on this shit, but you younguns need to watch the classics to appreciate the newfangled stuff. I recommend watching when you’re in a cheesy rom-com mood.

It's not Swiss who sees it first, although it should be. Instead it's Aether, who comes outside while Mary is helping them till a garden with an unexpected good nature, and sees it.

Aether knows he and Swiss have been together a long time. A frankly absurdly long time for how you might categorize them if you knew them just surface level – Swiss and Mary were undoubtedly, and without any umbrage, sluts. That was pretty simple. Mary was a fang-tooth, rabid little man who'd fuck anything and Swiss was a big, sweet, dumb party boy who loved sex. Swiss was good at handling a one night stand, Mary seemed too impatient for anything else.

But they'd been together – years, now. A long time. The first couple years were rougher, as the two of them got used to each other, learned each other. Swiss, for the first time, could tell someone he wanted them to stay. And Mary- well, Mary for the first time had someone who /cared/ if he stayed. It was awkward at times – there were fights, although nothing like the spitting ones he and Dew had gotten into when they were still together – but the two of them always looked better, somehow, afterwards.

But it's still a surprise when Mary's ragged-sleeved t-shirt comes off, and there's a stark, scar-white “S” cut into Mary's chest, right above his heart.

Wow, Aether thinks, the glass of lemonade in his hand not the only thing chilling him. That's...

It has to be new – not so very new since it was healed, but new enough that Aether hadn't seen it before. The blooming red rose on his shoulder blade? The city map tattooed on his forearm? Those had been there before, but this S had definitely not. And there's no way in hell that it was for anyone but Swiss.

“Hey, kid,” Aether says, in his usual way, trying to keep out the edge of disbelief from his voice. Some of the kids from the creche run about – the excitable girl Giulia is pulling Tino along by his arm, but slowly on account of Tino's legs, and Mary's favorite, Marietta, is dozing under the porch in a big sunhat, gripping her blanket to herself.

“Hey,” Mary greets, wiping his forehead with his arm and smearing some dirt there.

“Here, you look pretty thirsty.” Mary takes the cup gratefully, a little rough note from his throat as thanks, and drinks down the whole glass in one long chug, some of the lemonade dripping from the sides of his mouth and down his neck.

“Shit,” he says, catching himself and a couple of the droplets against his fingers, “More thirsty than I thought.”

“I have more,” Aether says, indicating the little refreshments stand he set up, “You should take a break, you've been out in the sun for a while.”

Mary steals a look back at the plot of land – nothing crazy, but a small plot of land inside the courtyard enclosed in chicken wire. They were going to plant things for the kids to grow and watch over – easy things like tomatoes and zucchini, and a sunflower house just outside the chicken wire. He's made good progress – despite his protestations he grew up in urban squalor and never touched a fresh vegetable before he came to Italy, there's something in Mary that makes him good at gardening. Certainly the kitchen garden usually took longer to get ready for planting, and that was with a group of maybe six of the clergy, usually Aether, a few sisters, and a deacon or two.

Mary screws up his mouth, clearly dissatisfied with his work. Aether thinks to tell him – don't worry about it, it looks good – but Mary comes away anyway, leaning his hoe against the fence and swinging his legs over.

Mary smiles a sharp smile at the little table laden with food – cut vegetables, an insulated cooler of lemonade, some sweet things, some salty things, some sour things. There's even cups of the limoncello custard Aether whips up during the summers, usually at either Dew or Papa Nihil's request.

“You two are so similar,” Mary comments, taking a few morsels of everything, “Fuckin' mama birds.”

“Similar to who?” Aether asks, genuinely confused.

“Swiss,” Mary says, with an additional look of obviously.

Well that- is not something he's really heard. Maybe on the grounds of size – although his softer, broader shape was way different than Swiss's cut, Renaissance-sculpture, ballet-dancer body – but not that many people drew connections other than that.

“It's a good thing,” says Mary, who grins and cocks his head in a way that is – surprisingly sweet, and surprisingly gentle. Any time Mary talks about Swiss, it's... gentle. “You're both big caring dudes,” he says, turning back to the buffet of foods, and the little cheesecakes with little animal faces drawn on in jam, “And you both like to cook to show how much you love people.”

“And you like that?”

“I like him,” Mary says, straightforward and simple, popping a cherry tomato into his mouth, “and I like you.”

...Oh. Huh.

It wasn't so much that Aether didn't like Mary – not at all, they had a natural camaraderie, got on thick as thieves, frequently fucked – but to hear it plain and simple from the man's mouth is... well, it's kind of surprising.

“Can't say I'm not one of those people either,” he continues, “I get banned from breakfast duty when it's Swiss's dance season. Just keep tryin' to make him ham and pancakes.”

“You love him a lot.” Aether says, without thinking. Mary stares up at him for a second, almost a challenge, almost a warning, but then his face relaxes into a soft grin, infinitely proud, and he says –

“You noticed?”

Aether laughs. “Yeah, I noticed. Got that S on your chest for him.”

“Oh shit,” he says, covering the S and flushing, looking around furtively, “He's not around, is he?”

Oh. That's- cute. Mary's mussed hair falls into his eyes and he brushes it back impatiently, a faint pink that might-be-sunburn-and-might-not across his nose and cheeks.

“No- you haven't shown it to him yet?”

“No,” he says, “It was still healing, and then they all went off on that trip-”

“Lucifer,” he cusses, “He's going to cry.”

Mary nods, laughing softly, “He's gonna cry for like, an hour.”

“You have to tell me all about it when he does,” Aether says, throwing a tentative fist into Mary's shoulder, “I'll make you something you like, we'll have coffee.”

“I'll take you up on that,” he says, “But hold this, I gotta put my shirt back on. No doubt if she sees Giulia will rat me out.”

“The trials of working with kids.”

“Tell me about it,” Mary says, when his shirt is back on and he's taken the plate back from Aether. “But they're sweethearts. Hey kids!” He calls to them, and they all perk to look at him, Marietta rousing from her nap, “Aether's made us all snacks, come have a break in the shade.”

Aether graciously welcomes them over when they come running.

A week later, Mary is at the kitchen table laughing incredulously that while he was on the trip, Swiss came back with a tattoo of him, and proudly drags Swiss in to show off a beautiful rose-haloed rendering of Mary from the back, his own rose tattoo carefully stenciled into Swiss's skin.

Lovebirds, Aether thinks, and offers cheers over their cups of coffee.

Miyo’s Anime of the Decade though Actually Just 2019

***Before I start this list, I would like to continue to send out good vibes and hope to all those affected by the Kyoto Animation arson attacks this past summer. It still hurts and I hope things can get better for everyone affected by it, even though I'm sure some things will take a long time to heal, if they ever will. Just know that you will always have me wishing you the best I can and sending out hope for you to recover at your own pace.***

I like writing these things every year. Whether it lets me know if my tastes are changing or staying the same, or if I'm just sentimental, writing about things I like is fun. Anime is good and I like watching it. I watched a good amount of stuff this year even if some seasons I couldn't find anything I say would fit this list.

For example, I started watching the Symphogear series and it's fun but I wouldn't say I liked it as much as any of these shows. Anima Yell is a very cute show but I didn’t have much to say about it, same for Aggretsuko again. I liked the main characters of JoJo part 5, but I wouldn't say I liked watching that, especially as the villain was revealed more and more. Fire Force was fun for me for like 5 episodes or so but then I bailed so take that as you will.

But I don't want to sound too mean here. No, this is for stuff I liked a lot and I wanted to write about things I enjoyed. This year I actually kept track of shows I liked as opposed to figuring out what I'd go on this list at the last moment. Crazy, I know, but this could be a good idea. Don't worry, I didn't take TOO many notes so this will be pretty off the cuff of my head like normal though I'm sure. As always, I will be using whatever title is easier for me to write/preference.

With this bit of text out of the way, let's la GO!  In no particular order (as always)...

Mob Psycho 100

This entry counts for both season 1 and season 2. I kind of sped through the first one a little so I could catch up in time for the second one. I feel it stuck with me just as much though. Mob Psycho is a solid action series with very silly things going on in the background of it...and foreground honestly). I suspect ONE is very good at making this sort of series. Honestly though, every character in this show is great and there's so many feel good moments. Mob  himself is a wonderful character. The most powerful psychic force in the universe but he just wants to get buff to go out with his crush.

There's a lot to like about this series. The humor is on point and anything with Reigen is going to be hilarious, especially if it takes a while. Animation is consistently top notch, especially in season 2, and I love the psychic effects. They end up looking like an old 90's video filter or trapper keeper or something. However, the most impressive thing this series does is show that maybe fighting isn't the way to do things all the time and that the most important thing you can show isn't just sympathy, but empathy.

Mob is a really good show and both of the OVAs are fun as heck. I dunno why I originally slept on Season 1, but I'm glad I came aboard.

Kaguyasama: Love is War

You probably know this one from that one ending with the pink haired girl dancing, that was going around for a while even though it was only for one episode. This series actually took me a little bit to get into mainly due to being WAY too tired to keep up with it. The set up being that the smartest boy and girl in the most elite high school both want to ask the other out. However, being the one to ask the other out would be to give up all power and admitting defeat. Basically it's a battle of two love struck idiots trying to get the other to ask them out.

As dumb as that sounds, the setups are often hilarious. Seeing the main characters trying to out scheme each other and keep a straight face while watching is a challenge in itself. It's like that 4th dimensional chess but the end result is seeing who will hold the other's hand first. Then throw in the wild card of Chika who seems to both not know what's going on while understanding how easy it is to end up on top in these battles and...look it's very funny ok? Even if sometimes the joke is just "weiner".

Kemurikusa

Similar to the Kemono Friends and its big gold star award, I felt like Kemurikusa deserved a shoutout this year. It's still janky like Kemono Friends before it, but after everything that went down with that series, it was definitely telling when this was the better of the two. This is a weird series and only some of that is due to the animation. The studio does a wonderful job of making a world that's both interesting and haunting at the same time. Everything that happens all ties to a big mystery that isn't revealed for quite a while.

The characters are fun enough. From the serious Rin to the caring Ritsu. From the voracious Rinas to the dweeby Wakaba. It's a fun cast going on a road trip throughout the apocalypse as they try to find good water for their big plant friend that drives around their husk of a bus. It can get pretty dark at times even with the neon bright colors the titular kemurikusa shimmering softly in the background. Oh also there's a roomba friend and a girl with sharp teeth so I mean, it's got something for everybody.

Hitoribocchi

This series is a cute little show with a setup which is potentially mean if you think about it. Bocchi's best friend is afraid she won't ever be able to make any other friends since they're going to different middle schools. Because of this, she says they can't be friends again until she befriends everyone in her class. The biggest hurdle to this challenge being Bocchi is horribly shy and socially awkward which just makes things seemingly impossible for her to overcome. Luckily, this is a cute comedy series.

The show is basically about Bocchi trying to make new friends so she can hopefully one day reunite with her bestie from the past. As I said before though, she's kind of bad with knowing how to communicate with people so she has a bad habit of say following friend making tips she read in books or online to a t and not deviating from them. Thankfully she is able to meet with lovable weirdos like blunt Nako, pitiful Aru and ninja girl Sotoka. It's a cute little series that also has a lot of heart, especially if you've ever had to overcome your own social anxieties to interact with others before. It's also funny too so there's a bonus even.

Carole and Tuesday

Shhhh. Don't let Netflix know I finished this before they did. Carole and Tuesday is a fun show from the creator of Cowboy Bebop, as evidenced in the fact it takes place on Mars and uses the same currency. It's a fairly simple plot, two girls meet up one day on the streets and start playing music together. One's an orphan who's basically lived alone for most of her life, the other is a rich girl running away from her politician mother (whose politics are a little too close for comfort these days). They just wanna make music man, and with a former big time agent with them, how can they lose!

Carole and Tuesday are fun characters and the show has a fun future sci fi vibe while still being grounded in reality. One of the biggest highlights is definitely the music though with lots of new songs in every episode and a good number of them being certifiable bangers. There's an overarching plot that also hits too close to home at times but the big finale at the end made it all worth it in the end really. This is an easy show to recommend and I am doing so to you right now. Go see these girls trying to make it to the big time!

Fruits Basket (2019)

I skipped out on Fruits Basket the first time around. I always told myself I'd go back and check it out but, knowing how I do things, this never actually happened. Part of me is kind of glad I waited to check it out though since I really like the style of the new show compared to the one from the early 00s. What I'm saying is I should have checked this out a lot earlier than I did but I don't feel visually bad for doing so.

Fruits Basket is a show featuring Tohru, the most helpful lovable girl, and a cast of characters who all start to love her because she is the most helpful lovable girl. This might sound like a bad thing but it's not. All of the characters are really fun, save one who I don't know WHY they don't just beat up, and I love seeing all their interactions. I just grew really invested in all of them and keep hoping everything will end up ok for them in the end, while in some cases waiting for a really big shoe to drop and biting my nails in the process.

I dunno if I have a super bunch to say about it other than my favorites are Uo-chan and Hana-chan and I can't wait until part 2 shows up. I am ready to see more of these Zodiac weirdos get hugged by Tohru and become animals and have her solve their problems in that order.

Futari wa Precure

This year, my friend Cheapsteaks and I decided to go after the OG Precure scene by watching the series that started it all. School girls run into fairies being pursued by weird monsters from another dimension/world/whatever and have to become legendary warriors to help them out. It's a story we all know well, just with lots of dropkicks and judo tosses.

As much as I like Honoka and Nagisa, and the opening theme...Futari wa has a lot of growing pains which is to be expected. Being the first one, it feels more like other magical girl series of the time compared to the style of later Pretty Cure series. From the rather uninspired villains, including one named Pissard, to the bland crush of Fuji P-senpai, and especially the obnoxious fairies, this is definitely one of the weaker series in my eyes. Again, it's probably not fair to judge it though since they didn't know what they were doing yet with this series.

That being said, there is a dumb fun to watching the Crunchyroll subs for a nostalgic taste of hard yellow subs and often not great audio. Again, the best parts of this are Honoka and Nagisa and I can see why they still get to be super popular today.

Smile Precure!

The other older series we checked out this year was Smile Precure which is much more my speed. The characters are all really good and they're all super good friends and it just makes me feel good. Like just in general they'rea really good and strong cast and I love all of them. Reika/Cure Beauty is the secret funniest character just by being the straight man on a team of doofuses and it works so well.

Miyuki's desire to make everything around her "Ultra Happy" just makes you feel good seeing a character who just wants others around her to be as happy as she is. All she needs is a smile and that makes me also smile. Akane is fiery and powerful, Yayoi is a big sweetie whose artistic trials and tribulations I SUPER identify with, Nao is a super cool big sister and I already brought up Reika being great. This is really one of my favorite Precures I've watched so far and I'm going to be sad to see it go in a few weeks.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention that I love the stupid villain trio. Especially Akaoni. I love you big red oni doofus. (Please see oni times in the link below)

Star Twinkle Precure

The newest Precure series! One we also dragged fellow anime friend Metalray into and I feel like it was a fun enough one. Cute alien encounters trying to help space zodiac princesses with a fluff unicorn and a tentacalien? Sign me up my dudes. Star Twinkle is a fun series and has a lot of things going for it, while also having weird similarities to Smile sometimes like soccer related attacks from good big sisters and prim and proper arrow girls.

The characters as always really make the show I feel when it comes to Precure and Lala is adorable enough to carry it entirely herself? But the enthusiasm of Hikaru is always fun because it usually just involves her being really into outer space and everything in it. Hey there's even Elena who is Mexican-Japanese and the show even explores a bit of her growing up being different from others so like, that's pretty cool I think? If it helps little kids learn to accept others and be cool through lil hermit crabs and dog space police officers, I think that's a real good thing.

...Now Precure time is over but I'm looking forward to next year's offering and seeing what old ones we go after next. (Spoilers, we will probably do Max Heart and Fresh!)...

How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift?

So this series has some problems in that like...wow sometimes during the exercise segments of the show, it just gets way too horny like...I dunno if I needed to see sensei in nothing but a bedsheet to show off how she worked her lats fellas. But I digress.

The main reason this show is on here is because it affected me enough to actually look at myself and start wanting to become healthier? Like the show is just a framing device for jokes and showing off exercise routines but the characters are all really sincere and the translation of the opening is even moreso? Like I feel this show helped me out a lot and I'm gonna let you all know about it cuz maybe it can help you out too if you need it.

Wasteful Days of High School Girl

Hey, so can I say something amazing? Much like Asobi Asobase last year, this series was a very weird comedy that I absolutely ended up loving a lot in the end. The cast is full of delightful idiots, one aptly named Baka by her friends being the standout moron of the cast. The title pretty much says it all but you will find all sorts of high school girls here just wasting their youth away in their favorite ways.

You want a girl who draws BL doujin while listening to vocaloid tracks? We gotchu. What about a girl who is more invested in micro organisms in Petri dishes than her friends? Yo, we're set. A dipshit chuuni who climbs on top of absolutely anything tall and regularly needs to be rescued/leap out of trees because of it? Yea, that's here too. The show is not afraid to be weird any chance it gets and there's something I can respect about that. This series also had one of my number one laughs in an anime this year in one of the last episodes too and it still makes me laugh as I recall it right now.

Also like Asobi Asobase, it has the plus of having a lovable witch girl who is as pure as she is into weird occult shit. Majo you're a sweetie. Even if your room is creepy.

The Demon Girl Next Door

This show feels like something that should have come out about 5 years ago in terms of animation style, story set up, characters and even the jokes. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing though because not only is it pleasant and cute, it also knows when to step back from teasing its unfortunate main character. Shamiko, the demon girl formerly known as Yuko by everyone who isn't her family, is a kind of pitiful character and this series could easily just make jokes that punch down and humiliate her way more than it did.

Thankfully, the show actually does it's best to show that she is comic relief but also that she is genuinely a good person. She's not very good at being a demon as she is still learning so maybe she gets easily tricked by resident blase magical girl Momo more than she should. However, she will go out of her way to make sure her rival is eating more than the crappy instant food she frequently microwaves. Like I said, it's ultimately a silly, kind of dated feeling series but the character interactions are nice and it's just genuinely good

hearted to see these girls become friends, even if sometimes it's due to trickier. The show makes sure not to be mean at all times to Shamiko compared to say Satania in Gabriel Dropout's treatment, or the snake girl in that Dropkick show I dropped after one episode. Shamiko is good and hopefully one day she will be able to use her demon powers to rule the world so her family can have a bigger, non cursed, budget to live on.

O Maidens in Your Savage Season

Puberty is hard. Puberty is also maddening, wanting to drive you up the wall with new urges you are not used to. Simple joys like trains are replaced with weird videos you order off websites or somehow get from the back of a video store. Puberty is an inherently frantic time but it's also kind of funny if you think about it enough.

Maidens explores the tales of the Literature Club members as they go through this important stage of life and that's the fun of this series. All of the girls are each trying to find out exactly what it is they want out of a relationship. Is it just friendship? Is it Ess Ee Ecks? There's a lot of fun to be had as the series goes on. Whether it be Kazusa trying to get a bit further with a childhood friend, President Rika questioning her stance on relationships being even proper to have in high school or the writing adventures of HItoha going to sex chatrooms, there is a lot of different things going on in this show.

It's got a very good sense of drama as well; there were more than a few episodes where I found myself worried about what would happen next and hoping things would be ok. Niina's arc is very intense and gave me creeper vibes any time her old mentor appeared. The show is very good in general at just showing emotions and none of it felt like it was shoehorned or phony. The writing is top notch and I love all these girls. Puberty is a weird time but...they got this I'm sure.

Here are a couple of other shows I watched that didn't come out this year but enjoyed a lot!

SSSS.Gridman

Thank God Trigger was able to come back from its previous offering to give us Gridman. At first I was afraid that all of its Transformers color scheme easter eggs were just trying to lure me in with a mediocre show. This was not the case because Gridman just rules hard. A sequel/spinoff to the old 90's series, localized here as Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, this show was a love letter from the creators to the show and other tokusatsu shows in general.

Kaiju appear to devastate the city, shown from low angles that just make it seem even more like you're watching an old toku show. The toyetic nature of Gridman's various powerups and the design of Gridman himself just further pay homage to this. There was one Kaiju for a moment I swear you could see a string operating it (for the record, it was not a string but was in fact part of the Kaiju). It's not just a cheap nostalgic trap though because the animation is superb, the action is top notch and the main theme song just kicks ass. This is a really cool series and if you have any passing interest in toku shows, are a Trigger fan, or like seeing Actionmaster Thundercracker's color scheme, go and check this thing out!

Other highlights include another version of Inferno Cop and Rikka's mom who is always fun and good.

Dirty Pair (TV series)

Dirty Pair is a series I watched a good chunk of before but never actually finished. Thanks to the #DirtyDecempair hashtag though, I finally went and did it and well...Dirty Pair is still really good y'all. It's got space babes who kick ass and are not afraid to go after hunks along the way. Seriously, it's great when you watch a show older than you and it lives up to its hype.

Kei and Yuri are really good characters because they will snipe at each other but in the end, they are still besties and will mess up anything that gets in their way. I appreciate that they always try to get more PTO and pay out of their boss. Even more, I appreciate that the chief will put up with all their shit, whether it be the aforementioned blackmailing for vacation or the sheer amount of destruction they leave in their wake,  and still is 100% behind them. He knows they're the best he has and nothing will get in their way.

So yea, Dirty Pair. Still a good show over 30 years later. You should check it out next December! Or sooner, whatever!

Promare Good fucking movie, good fucking soundtrack. Good Trigger things this year. It lives up to its hype for sure. Go see this when it is out on DVD and Bluray!

Sound Euphonium - Our Promise: A Brand New Day This was a nice movie that felt like a good third season condensed into about 2ish hours.

Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie: Over the Rainbow I actually like the music from this one more than the movie itself but seeing Ruby's arc gaining confidence is good and I love it.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly They made Broly a compelling character finally, holy shit. Also some good Frieza comedy.

KonoSuba! Legend of Crimson Imagine a village full of dipshit chuuni wizards. This movie was fun and funny as shit. Warning: It does have one awkward joke related to gender but it thankfully passes by it real quick.

So I think this is my list. I hope you enjoy it. The next time you'll see one from me will be in the distant future of 2020! Hopefully things will be cool by that point to go with the good anime.

you chuckled to yourself reading that letter 

“bullshit. minhyun wouldn’t even want to help me in the first place,” you mumbled under your breath

minhyun was a friend of yours in some sort of sense

he was your cliche fuck boy that’d always pick on you

but in a sense, you two were somehow friends 

he was there for all the injuries you got to firstly, laugh at you at how dumb you are and secondly, treat your wounds 

and you’d blush every time he did as you’d remained silent 

“who’s even sending me these letters?” you scoffed to yourself 

rolling your eyes, you threw the letter onto your desk as you headed out for school

you met up with your friends at your desk as they mentioned how great their weekends were 

“woojin got so shy and it was the most cutest thing ever,” kyujin spoke, becoming all flustered 

“ew, that’s my brother you’re talking about,” replied eunkyung 

you rolled your eyes and smiled 

“but eunkyung, you’re dating kyujin’s brother,” you scoffed under your breath as kyujin rolls her eyes

“ew,” she gags as you couldn’t help but burst out into laughter 

“ah- the single life,” you exclaimed like a queen on her throne 

they both shake their heads with smiles across their faces 

“okay but in actual news, minhyun’s gonna be in our gym class again,” spoke eunkyung 

“seriously? he got kicked out of english again?” kyujin commented, gawking her eyes 

“i bet it’s to annoy y/n again,” kyujin mumbles softly as they both look at you

for some reason, the thought of minhyun usually brought you a sour and bitter look

but all you could think of was that letter

“hey guys- this morning i...” you trailed off your sentence, second guessing you choices before you spoke 

“you what?” kyujin provoked 

“nothing. i was just gonna mention how i bought a new hairband since minhyun broke my last one but that’s nothing really important,” you avoided the actual topic you were about to bring up

they bought it and nodded as you smiled a bit to yourself 

when gym rolled around, the familiar annoying boy was being scolded by the gym teacher once again since he was brought into this class 

“y/n! minhyun here has been missing out on all of his english homework, can you help him get caught up since your grade in gym is obviously set at a high score?” your gym teacher spoke 

“well obviously- if she’s gonna keep kicking me out, of course i’m gonna be missing out on work,” minhyun cursed under his breath as you kicked him quickly, without the gym teacher noticing 

forcing a smile, you nodded 

usually, everyone would change into their gym clothes but since you were pulled aside, you were in the school uniform 

“fuck you,” you scoffed 

“with pleasure sweetie,” he replies with sarcastic eyes 

“what are you missing out on?” you ask trying to change the topic

“i don’t know, she kicks me out of class i don’t fucking know what i’m supposed to be doing,” he spoke bitterly 

“you’re fucked,” you teased as he rolled his eyes 

“aren’t you fucked since i’m the one doing it?” he provoked as you couldn’t help but scoff, leaving a bitter-ish smile across your face 

“alRIGHT FUCK THIS” you groaned standing up and storming away 

minhyun followed you, but walked instead 

as you turned a corner, you tripped over thin air and landed on your back as you could hear minhyun’s laugh approaching 

rolling your eyes, minhyun finally comes into sight 

“has the clock struck 12 yet?” he teases as you roll your eyes

he offers you a hand as your mind went back to the letter 

“he’ll offer you his hand. accept that offer,” 

as you found yourself to be a puppet on strings, you accepted his hand as he helped you stand up

“thanks...” you softly spoke as you realized his hand wasn’t letting go of yours 

minhyun was staring at you with an unreadable expression on his face as you could feel yourself becoming flustered 

you let go of his hand as he realized how close you two actually were and becomes flustered as well 

“ah- s-sorry,” he mumbles shyly

“i-it’s fine,” you reply

“okaybye,” you both say at the same time before walking off into two different directions 

DAY 2 

“don’t move. you won’t regret it,” 

you were a bit in shocked when the letter labeled day 1 worked out

the mail only came with 3 envelopes, titled day 1, day 2 and day 3 

but the fact that day 1 was exactly like how the letter explained it, you were starting to possibly believe it was true 

it can’t hurt just to do what it says, can it? 

“what the fuck do you mean by that?” you scoffed under your breath 

“how does one not move?” you questioned to yourself softly

rolling your eyes, you took a deep breath when your eyelids shut down for a bit to take everything in 

you didn’t even know what you were doing at this point

going to school, a sudden pair of hands tapping on your shoulders made you jump a bit as you turned around 

“you get scared easily,” minhyun scoffs as he walks away, suddenly bumping into your shoulder 

you furrowed your eyebrows and shook your head, continuing on with your life like usual

minhyun came into your language class since he got kicked out of history 

the thought of it made you chuckle and roll your eyes but minhyun seemed to notice that action and decided to take a seat next to you 

“minhyun, fuck off,” you mumbled bitterly

“sorry. i seem to be attracted to pretty girls,” he casually spoke as you sat there, a bit flustered from the sudden comment 

you didn’t notice how your cheeks were a bit pink but minhyun did 

he messes up your hair and chuckles a bit, pinching your cheek like a child as you winced in pain

“yes- i called you pretty you idiot,” he mumbles as you slap his hand away from the pain, rubbing your cheek a bit 

guilt took over him as he felt like he pinched your cheek a bit too hard 

“don’t move, you won’t regret it,” 

minhyun suddenly moves in closer and cups your cheek, rubbing his finger back and fourth as his eyes meet yours 

he softly smiles as his eyes became warm

“you’re cute when you’re like that,” he mumbles softly, under his breath

DAY 3 (the day before spring break) 

“he cares about you more than you think,” 

you played with the ends of your hair and your fingers, dangling your feet from the seat outside of the office 

hwang minhyun was never the type to care about you

or at least that’s what you thought 

it’s so easy for one to write the words but to believe it is the hard part 

a girl ran past you and looking behind her was minhyun, walking casually like he did when you fell down 

it’s definitely a lot more easier to write it out then believe it you said to yourself 

“have a nice spring break minhyun!” the girl spoke happily 

“you too,” he replied as she ran off 

minhyun notices your presences and sat beside you

“what are you doing here?” he asked

“debating if i should walk home or get a cab,” you replied as he chuckles and nods 

“what’s the chuckle for?” 

“choosing something like that shouldn’t be hard,” he scoffs as you roll your eyes and shake your head

“for me it is,” you whined like a child as minhyun laughs a bit 

“he cares about you more than you think,”

kobayashi kei is a teacher at U.A. who has an established relationship with aizawa shouta. kei and shouta have known each other ever since they started at UA together. their friendship had always been strong but this is the story of how they came to be as a couple and what the future holds.

a/n - !manga spoilers! slightly divergent of the main plot but it will be caught up to the current season of the anime after the time skip. she is the homeroom teacher for 1B but don't worry we still stan vlad in this house so he's now 2B. bit of a promotion for the trouble. her quirk is fatigue manipulation. she has the ability to manipulate the fatigue of oneself or others, both mental and physical. she can increase, decrease, cause or prevent fatigue. in order to increase someone's fatigue, she needs to either leech from another person or herself. her fatigue is only affected if she is using a lot of energy either giving or transferring. if she takes energy from someone else, she will gain it. she cannot rest or sleep until she gets all of her energy out either by wearing herself out mentally or physically. she cannot kill someone easily but she can make some lose consciousness.

The school year seemed to move faster than Kei could keep up with. Before she knew it, they were preparing for the amazing U.A. Sports Festival. While Kei would have loved to be in the top ranks, she knew her quirk wasn't flashy enough. Regardless, she worked on her combat training until she was barely able to get into bed. She woke up early and did longer runs. She wore weights to increase her strength and stamina. The boys worked hard as well. Of course, Hizashi and Oboro did amazingly. Kei did pretty well and so did Aizawa but she had expected him to blow everyone away. After learning more about his quirk, she would have expected him to be closer to top ranks. The first years were never completely dazzling. People watched for the third years. As the school year went along Kei got to know the boys even more and considered them some of her best friends. Every night that they couldn't catch up after class, Kayama and Kei would talk on the phone for at least half an hour about their days. While Kei pretended she hated talking about Shouta, she really didn't. It was an excuse to gush about how cute he was. How sweet he was. He was a boy of few words and few actions but the ones he had were meaningful. Oboro and Hizashi were great. Always a hint of flirtation in their banter. Shouta was different though. It was the time of year where they had to pick their hero names. At least the ones they would start out with. Oboro and Hizashi knew theirs already but Shouta and Kei were still out of ideas. Oboro or as he was now known, Loud Cloud, suggested the very creative Energy Girl. Hizashi thought Agent Energy was a bit better. She might have gone with that if she didn't think about how silly Shouta's new name was. Eraser Head. It fit him but at the same time, it was a bit goofy. "I'm not sure. This could be my name forever. Those just sound...not serious enough. I want people to know I mean business." Kei hit her fist on the table with a little too much force and everyone in the classroom snapped their heads back to glare before going back to coming up with their own names. 

  "Vitality." Just one word from Shouta. Vitality. Kei smiled at him. "I think I like that." "Me too! Present Mic introduces the Energy Hero: Vitality!" Oboro cheered with Kei. Earning them even more glares. After class, Kei grabbed Shouta's arm just enough to stop him from leaving with the rest of the class. "Hey." She smiled at him and she could feel her cheeks turning pink just from looking at him so closely without the others around. "Thank you. I really like my new name." Her eyes were deceiving her. Was Shouta actually smiling so wide directly at her? Not at anything the boys said. Not a little smirk. A big smile. She tucked her face down a little embarrassed looking up at him. "You need a name that fits you. Something straight forward. And pretty." Kei gasped looking back up at him. Shouta was starting to blush too but before he could do or say anything more. "I- um...thank you! I really should go. Have a good night! See you tomorrow." She almost bolted for the door. She didn't know what to do. "Did he just call me pretty? Or was that just the name. But he said it had to fit me and that it was pretty so does that mean he thinks I'm pretty?" She found Kayama and told her everything. The girls gushed outside of the school for a little while trying to figure out what it meant. "Obviously he thinks you're pretty and wants to kiss you. It's so obvious." Kei shook her head. "You haven't even met him!" She laughed lightly.  The girls parted ways and Kei thought about what he said all night long. The next day, Shouta sat the farthest from her of the three boys. He didn't say a word to her. Didn't even look at her. Kei was trying to pretend like everything was normal with Hizashi and Oboro but she was still awkward. Mr. Blue hair noticed. "What's wrong with you today?" She had been staring at the lines of her palm and was tracing them with a finger on her other hand. "What?" She responded when she snapped out of it. "I said what is wrong with you today, Kei. Are you okay?" Oboro put a hand on her shoulder and looked at her with a facial expression that showed actual concern. A serious moment at least as far as he went. "Oh. I'm fine." She nodded giving him a half-smile. "Just didn't get enough sleep." Not wanting to draw any more attention to her weirdness she stayed mostly quiet until it was time to leave. "See you tomorrow!" She told the guys before leaving as fast as she could again. 

  {aizawa pov}

Kobayashi was acting weird. Of course, she was acting weird. He freaked her out and now she was avoiding him. Shirakumo noticed she was acting weird too. He was apparently using both of the brain cells he shared with Yamada who was yelling about whatever. Shouta stole glances at her when he could. He just wanted to make sure he hadn't hurt her, right? All he did was say she was pretty. Sort of. I mean not really but he hinted that she was. He had been so careful to not blow his cover. It only took a couple weeks of school for Yamada to notice the way Shouta looked at Kobayashi. The way he'd hide his smiles whenever she made a dumb joke. He wouldn't call her dumb when she was doing the same stupid things Shirakumo and Yamada were doing. It took until the U.A. Sports Festival for Shirakumo to notice. Now Kobayashi was acting weird the day after she pulled him aside. When she said she hadn't gotten enough sleep, Shouta sighed. "Is that a lie or did I really make her lose sleep? I should have never said anything." She left class just as quickly as she had the day before leaving the three of them in the dust. She was just barely gone when Aizawa felt a punch in the arm. "What did you do to her?" Shirakumo looked a little mad. "Nothing. I didn't do anything." Yamada had figured it out by now and was also giving Aizawa a look. "Shouta, what the hell? She's fun to have around. Don't scare her off because you can't keep your eyes off her.", Yamada said actually at a fairly normal volume. Though he was probably trying to be quiet so people wouldn't hear them and make everything worse. "She thanked me for coming up with the name and I might have accidentally called her pretty." Another punch in the arm but this time it was from Yamada. "Now who's the idiot. You have to fix this." Shirakumo interjected. "Don't. You'll probably only make a bigger mess of things. I'll see if I can help."

The next day was still agonizing. Now it seemed like Yamada knew something was going on, too. Kayama had been no help the night before. Her idea of flirting is just smiling and watching boys fall to their knees in front of her. She could get any boy in school, easily. Probably any boy in Japan, honestly. This time instead of Shouta staying behind to talk to Kei it was Oboro. Which confused her even more. "What is he going to ask? Is he going to tell me Shouta hates me? I bet that's it." She didn't know what to expect but Oboro putting his arm around her wouldn't have been her first guess. "Not getting enough sleep, huh? Wouldn't happen to do with a certain quiet dreamy type, would it?" Kei's whole body tensed up and her blood rushed to her cheeks. "Oh god, he knows. Does everyone know? Hizashi wouldn't be able to keep a secret. The whole school knows by now. Shouta knows. I'm just going to move to America." She didn't know how to respond. "I'm going to take that as a yes. Look, Shouta is great and all but that boy doesn't know how to talk to girls. Not like me. I'm just so charming." He gave Kei a huge grin which actually got a laugh out of her and she relaxed a little. "I think he called me pretty." She scrunched her nose trying to contain her excitement and come off as cool and collected. "I heard. But...you have to be careful if you two are going to be a mushy gushy couple. Hizashi and I are going to have to start dating then and he's hot but he could use a push-up bra." An abrupt laugh came out of Kei's mouth. "I don't know what I'm even thinking. We have internships soon and then Finals. I can't think about a boy during this." Oboro smiled and gave her a nod. "That's probably a good idea. I'll smack him every time he's staring at you." Kei looked up at him, her face just as red as it can be. "He stares at me?"

Reasons below the cut (Spoilers)

For the sake of discussion, I will absolutely be conflating the Artifact quest lines in with the class Campaign quests.

1. Druid - Druid's campaign basically breaks the curve by sheer scope. The campaign focuses on one major theme for this part of the expansion, and just expands on it beautifully. You are charged with protecting the Emerald Dreamway, rescuing Malorne, and eventually saving the Emerald Dream from the forces of both the Legion and the Emerald Nightmare. Between the beauty of the different zones, the massive gatherings of druids, exploration of Druid lore, and getting to relive the War of the Ancients at Mount Hyjal, none of the other class campaigns quite compare to sheer magnitude of history and lore that Druids get to explore. It also doesn’t hurt that Druid is an amazing class to play in its own right and each artifact quest is clever and interesting (except the Balance questline. That was pretty weak TBH). This campaign really made me feel the ‘class fantasy’.

2. Shaman - Close contender for being almost as epic as the druid campaign. The major theme of the Shaman questline is leading the Earthen Ring and uniting the Elemental Lords against the Legion, which is kinda like bargaining with a bunch of perpetually angry, murderous children to team up and fight Communism. Nonetheless, the shaman campaign has fun and interesting quests as well as insight to how the Elementals work (or don’t work) with each other, and they make good use of a variety of former instances and questing zones (including a finale in the Firelands that is beautiful and hectic).

3. Death Knight - Another top contender given THAT FINALE THO. GET WRECKT PALIDANS YEAH- oh, nevermind. Really, my only complaint was that the very end of the finale fell short (should’ve just let us do it, Blizz), and that it wasn’t Dark Souls Hard the whole way. Everything else about the Death Knight campaign was fantastic - raising the new Four Horsemen, killing lots of people, causing mayhem, Lich King Bolvar. Superb stuff, all the way.

4. Warrior - The quest line that starts meh, gets good, gets great, then settles back into “good” again. Sadly, I think it was a missed opportunity to explore the warrior cultures of the Horde and Alliance, and instead focused entirely on the lore and history of the Titans / Vrykul. For what it is, though, I think Blizz did a great job, and I don’t see the quest line they built fitting into any of the other classes nearly as well. It wasn’t the story that we wanted or needed for Warriors, but it was the best damned way to tell the story they did. Also, lolz Ulduar quest zone~

5. Monk - This is a fine quest line that falls short by virtue of just not being as epic as the others. It’s also the questline that convinced me that the Vrykul story only really paired well with the Warrior class hall. It starts strong by basically trashing the set in at the Peak of Serenity in Pandaria, and takes you back to the Wandering Isle (remember there?). Then it proceeds to utterly destroy shit in Pandaria at literally every chance it gets, which is great fun. Then you make God Beer and defeat a winged commie space goat.

6. Mage - This is where the class hall quests start to get a bit underwhelming, TBH. The whole quest line revolves around Archmage Vargoth being weird, only to reveal that he was possessed by demons. Honestly, it’s not great on it’s own, and if it wasn’t presented as a ‘mystery’ that we all could solve within the first five seconds of stepping into the order hall, it probably would have been more interesting. However, throughout the quest line, you do get some cool lore, elves, stupid Khadgar tricks, more elves, vomiting deaders, gaggles of elves, a blue-haired dragon husband, too many elves, Milhouse Manastorm, and a free trip to your most hated (my favorite) dungeon from Wrath of the Lich King, THE OCULUS! Also, so many elves... even though they are shit at magic.

7. Warlock - High School Drama: The Anime: The Quest Line. Seriously, you could probably make a decent anime out of just about anything that happens with Warlocks - the angst, the interpersonal drama, the cute/disgusting monsters they subjugate to serve them, the unlikely capture/escape scenarios, the pink hair.  It manages to be clever and more interesting than some of the other quests, but it ultimately boils down to a whole lot meaningless drivel and a weird “choose your favorite girl to join your cool kids’ clique” decision at the end. And then you have the orc who keeps leaving butt-cinders *everywhere*.

8. Demon Hunter - Basically you finish what you started with the Demon Hunter starting zone. And then you fight twins in what is probably one of the better finales of all the quests. However, apart from a cool finale and the fact that you get your own space ship, there’s not really much about the Demon Hunter quest line that really excited me. Demon Hunters are insufferable characters in general, Korvas Bloodthorn doesn’t get to be your bodyguard, and if you picked Kayn Sunfury then you spend most of the time being just as terrible as Illidan was. I probably would have enjoyed this more if I didn’t pick Kayn, but I did and I regret my life choices, even if the Illidari CANNOT be STOGHPPPED!!!!

9. Rogue - Good: Tactical Espionage Action. Pirates. Mattias Shaw is a dreadlord. Garona, Vaneesa VanCleef, Taoshi, and Valeera Sanguinar’s thighs all become your girlfriends. Bad: Trolling the AH for mats while Noggenfogger sits on his ass and blackmails you. Amber Kearnan dies offscreen and zero fucks are given. Getting killed in Stormwind repeatedly by Fury warriors (okay, I lied about that last part, that was pretty lolzy). Worst: you have to play a Rogue in order to experience any of it. Also, exactly one of the artifact quests are fun to do and it’s not the one it should be.

10. Priest & Paladin (Tied) - I have to tie these because they’re basically the same flipping thing, with only the artifact quests and maybe half of the actual campaign quests to distinguish them. I wanted to praise Blizz by showing overlap / interaction between the different classes, but they basically went overboard here, by recycling plot points and even the finale, altogether. Also, Netherlight Temple is a dumb idea, akin to moving NORAD into a base in Afghanistan because Al-Qaeda would NEVER think to look there (....well, until they do). Priests arguably have it worse because they don’t even get to be the hero of their own class hall mission (that goes to the Paladins) - AND you have to play a Priest for the privilege of this nonsense, which is arguably the worst punishment one can experience. Paladins, on the other hand, get meaningless choices and suffer the indignity of watching every single champion of theirs make fools of themselves at the first opportunity. Also, both sides visit each others halls, but nobody gets murdered in the process. Also also, wtf is a Lothraxxion and why - I did this shit twice and I still don’t know, he just shows up like a shiny sparkle vampire. Also also also - sigh - Night Elf Paladins when, Blizz? :/

12. Hunter - My beloved Main’s class campaign was also arguably the weakest and least interesting. The artifact quests are fine enough (though Marksman could have just dropped a bigger dime on Allleria than “she ain’t here, but she was”) but the main core of the hunter quest - while probably the most grounded and true to the Hunter’s ‘class fantasy’ - was a snooze fest compared to the other campaigns. The Unseen Path as a concept is cool but overall underwhelming to me - their super-clandestine nature means that they try to stay out of the way of cool things happening, but they don’t have the benefit of being a bunch of spies and thieves to have any intrigue to back it up. They swear an oath and then sit around a lodge and snack, occasionally plinking arrows at targets literally right in front of them. There are cool, all-too-brief detours when you go to recruit champions like Rexxar, Nesingwary, and Addie Fizzlebog, but even they aren’t enough to uplift an otherwise boring plot involving hunting down a felguard and his super felstalkers. In terms of scope and grandeur: If the Druid campaign was ‘class fantasy’ being used to tell an epic tale of saving the planet and exploring history with an army of allies, the Hunter campaign was ‘class fantasy’ being used to tell a story about how you did a crossword puzzle while on vacation this one time. On the plus side, the Hunter quest line has you play with a dog, and the Druid quest line does not.
