Here we go! It's T minus 4 days until the beginning of my Pacific Crest Trail thru hike. I will be blogging and documenting my journey on the trail. I suppose I will try to publish my posts every time I go into a trail town.

There may be a few I'm leaving out of this list but ^ gives you a general sense of what I will be carrying. Here's also a link to my lighter pack

Base weight is currently just under 14 lbs! As reference, I am 5'7 130 lbs

Section 1: Southern California

The Southern Californian portion of the trail is dominated by desert landscapes with a few mountain passes. Socal saw record snow fall this year so I hope water resupply in this section won't be as big of an issue!

The following are all the trail towns I will be visiting in this section. For the sake of simplicity, all trail towns up to Kennedy Meadows South or KMS will be part of socal.

My friends back in NYC will be sending me resupply packages as I go. Currently, I'm reading Pacific Crest Trials which I am finding to be very interesting in terms of mental preparation for the thru hike.

My friend Kevin will be driving me down to Campo, the southern terminus of the trail on the 29th!

I'm feeling pretty good about this and as prepared as I can be!!! I also reached out to a manufacturer to make pins I could give out to fellow hikers on the trail. I've learned from music festivals that pins are a great way to make friends :3

It's just a simple design of the PCT trail marker but it came out looking very nice!

Intentions & Goals

I read this book called 'Start With Why' with one of my previous coworker and I thought defining my "why"s for the trail will help tremendously. I know I will have really tough days and days when I want to just quit and go back to the comforts of society. Here is my unpolished "why" for the PCT that I memoed on my phone:

I am doing this for to remind myself that I can do anything I put my mind to. This year, my friend passed away and I was reminded that life is fleeting and I need to live pursuing what I want more vigorously. Postponing happiness until retirement is a flawed life approach! I've always wanted to this and I would like to take this time to figure out what I really want to do in this life and where I want to end up. I am trying to live with more intentionality and I'm working towards a real goal I've set for myself and doing this out of my own joy.

I am hiking the PCT because:

I need time to evaluate what I want to do with my life and career

The PCT has always been a larger than life adventure that I wanted to do

Life is short and I should take every chance I get to pursue what I want to do in life

I have the rest of my life to excel in my career

I want to experience true freedom and self sufficiency

I want to prove to myself I can do anything I set my mind to

Good Timing

Snow was in the forecast yesterday so I took the opportunity to clean the section of I90 that Beth and I adopted. This was likely the last time I will be able to clean it in 2022. By coincidence the DOT also hung our sign yesterday.

I don’t have the exact figures but I’m guessing I spent ~40 hours picking up >200 bags of trash in our 2 mile stretch of highway. We’ve found some treasures like a $20 bill, charged Apple EarPods, and 2 credit cards. We’ve also found every sort of clothing item imaginable as well as all the gross stuff you’d expect.

Shredded truck tires are the heaviest as well as discarded truck snow chains. Most of the trash is containers for food and drink purchased on the road at a gas station. There are a lot of beer cans; I’m guessing people are drinking when they shouldn’t be and it’s easier just to discard the empties on the road. Ironically there are also a lot of empty energy drink cans; do the consumers not have enough energy to find a trash can?

Today’s interesting find was 13 cases (>200 packages) of beef Kielbasa. Animals had opened and feasted on most but not all of them.

I suspect that most motorists believe that I’m a drunk driver doing my community service rather than an early retiree with too much time in his hands.

Finally, a pro tip; don’t use these black rubber straps to secure your loads. I picked up over a hundred of these.

triggers: death, adoption, mental illness

felicity was born to a single mother. she was never planned and was indeed a strain on the household. her mother hid her pregnancy with her until she went into labor and told her parents. it was a disaster and continued to be when fliss was born. none of it was her fault but her mother was already suffering from mental illness, something that wasn’t helped by the judgemental people around her. then suddenly, the woman was gone in an accident - felicity's own family didn't want her. she would scream for her mother, for anyone but they wouldn't come.

at the age of five, she was adopted by the daughter of edward allen, a known billionaire and they both lived in the united states of america. money prevailed in getting ms. allen what she wanted, a child when she was a single and vile person that would say and do anything to get one. when unable to conceive herself, she looked towards adoption and the process was much quicker taking a five year old, plus, she skipped out baby night feeding so it was of no concern to her.

it took her a while to get settled but with edward’s help, fliss managed. she always felt a bit out of place with her peers; she didn’t catch onto jokes that fast nor did she necessarily care about designer things or status. she was labelled as odd and that’s how it stayed. she loved singing, mainly to herself and also writing music, composing. that was her happy place along with being with people - even if they didn’t understand her, she still found the positives to enjoy it. her grandfather was very supportive with whatever she wanted but she never once asked for anything apart from ‘dinners and dance parties’. in the absence of her mother's caring, edward was the one to make her feel like she was exactly where she needed to be, even be quick to put her into therapy, not because she was broken but because she needed that external support where she could be honest. felicity was always grateful, always reminded that she got lucky with the life by her mother and edward took that pressure off. the whole world probably had some opinion on the billionaire but he was perfect to her.

when she was in her teen years, she worked as a model for her mother’s cosmetic company. without realising it, felicity was responsible for her mother’s success because it made the woman branch out into new foundation shades - it wasn’t perfect but it was a step in the right direction and her mother was applauded whilst felicity became the face of the entire company - not just the face but the name of felicity cosmetics. you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing her face. it did cause controversy with her being young but it got people talking.

it was a lot of pressure to put on her but she was agreeable in nature and never wanted to upset her mother so never said anything. she fell into her music as a way to process emotions and things she cared about - had been dubbed a bit of a prodigy but was never really good at school. through connections, she did manage to get a place at julliard but she’d crumble and pull out only a few months in. it was mainly sitting in her bedroom with her laptop and equipment, headphones on being in a completely different world while she wrote and mixed tracks and that was and continues to be her happy place.

the news that her grandfather was ill and he wasn’t going to get better hit fliss the hardest. he was the one person who she felt understood her, the one that tied her to a lot of things and made her feel loved. impulsive and intense behaviour came from her during this time, that was in her second month at julliard. living in denial was a hard place to be as her mental health deteriorated quickly - fliss' mother wasn’t the talkative type and every time she tried to accept reality and try to talk about her feelings with the woman, she’d be shut down and thrown into a schedule. she’d dropped out and hadn’t told her mother - being dishonest was not her thing...

she had a breakdown at a photoshoot. the photographer was quick to intervene and attempted to comfort her until they could get her somewhere safe. a day after, she was hospitalised but her mother wanted to get her out quickly. it was upsetting when edward died and she has yet to accept that he’s gone. it was just her and her mother and although she felt broken, she needed to be there to comfort her mom because she could see that the woman was struggling - it was hindering them both that she still didn’t want to talk about it.

the reading of edward allen’s will was a big event. fliss wasn’t expecting to get anything as he’d given her more than enough love to make up for the lack in her life. it was a great surprise to everyone, including her, when edward left everything to her. overwhelmed didn’t even cover it. his savings, current bank account, shares in his company, property... everything. she was so confused as to why and did feel sorry for her mother but she didn’t even have time to think about what she wanted to do with the billions (tabloids will say millions which is half-true because they underestimate the situation) before the woman that she called mother would be filing to court to try get it revoked and passed to her. 

fliss did not want to fight with her mother. the woman didn’t even tell her about it, a lawyer made her aware that her mother wanted to take it from her and was bringing her sanity into question. she didn’t even want all of it but the fact her mom was doing this to her made her more resistant. its a lot of responsibility and she needs to really think about what she wants to do about everything so is attempting to ignore the pressure.

little facts:

she’s not bothered about designer labels. if it’s pretty, she’ll buy it, whether it’s from chanel or a charity shop, it doesn’t matter to her. this is why she wears ariana’s perfume - a little goes a long way but can be known to putting on too much and accidentally irritating taxi drivers when she gets in.

tries to be positive to everyone and everything but it makes her feel good. she is naive when it comes to trusting people but wants to be loved so is ultimately a people pleaser.

she publishes her own music online using an alias of alisa w, like an alice in wonderland situation. fliss just likes creating for now and now she’s not modelling for her mother anymore (contract was terminated), she’s happy keeping out of the public eye as much as possible.

with what’s going on, she’s residing in her late grandfather’s upper east side penthouse :))

cries very easily - if she’s happy, sad or scared, she’ll be crying. fliss also very much wears her heart on her sleeve!

was labelled as ‘kooky’ pretty early on but doesn’t really mind. she does try to fit in but it never ends up being how she imagined. she's diagnosed with schizophrenia and autistic spectrum disorder and doesn't necessarily hide this. it's not that she hides it but there's never a moment for it to come up but she also feels like her mother will use her mental health against her when it has nothing to do with the situation.

loves blue eyeshadow!!

has drunk since she was a teen and still doesn’t know her limits :)

either cant sleep so she decides to scrap book while listening to music at three am or she does nothing but sleep.

is incredibly loyal and loving but doesn’t try to ask too many questions. her personality can sometimes be imposing as it is.

is trying to act like nothing is happening so is over-compensating with her chirpy personality.

likes all types of music apart from country, sorry :/

Apple's New Airpods Pro Are The Best Earbuds All Over Again

Apple's new Airpods are the best pair of wireless headphones you can buy. They're not perfect, but they're close enough to make it worth your time and money. The first generation of AirPods were released in 2016 and consisted of simple, oval-shaped earbuds that could be clipped into a case to connect them to each other wirelessly. They were well-received, but the design felt like an evolutionary step backward from what we'd seen with Apple's earphones over the years — like a second-generation version of those old wired EarPods that came with every iPhone since 2007.

The new AirPods Pro are different in two major ways: First, they're much bigger and bulkier, thanks to their ability to connect to each other wirelessly through Bluetooth 5 (they still require a cable if you want to go wired). Apple Set to Launch a 5.4-inch Phone This Year || NeoDrafts

Apple is all set to launch a 5.4-inch iPhone this year. Apple may be working on a new sleek iPhone. The phone would come with a 5.4-inch display, far smaller than the current iPhone 11 model.

Links to the portable 5.4-inch iPhone have been found in the new iOS 14 beta update. In addition to the easy-to-carry iPhone, the beta version also confirms the availability of the Display Zoom feature. This helps users to zoom in on smaller iPhone models without disturbing the experience of the app.

For example, Display Zoom enables the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro interface on the larger 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max. As the name suggests, it enlarges text, keys and icons.

Display Zoom Feature:

The iOS 14 beta three developers introduces the Display Zoom feature. Including a new, smaller display of 960 x 2,079 pixels that is designed to zoom in on iPhone X. And newer 5.8-inch iPhone versions, but fits precisely on a 5.4-inch screen, 9to5Mac says.

The function adjusts the entire device interface to the size of what’s on the smaller iPhone model to give some magnification. It wasn’t accessible for the iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 Pro. However, it was a piece of the iPhone XS Max and iPhone 11 Pro Max so far.

The new report is pretty much in line with what Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expected last year. Kuo said Apple would announce a sleek 5.4-inch iPhone with OLED screen and 5 G connectivity in 2020. Earlier this year, he added that the phone would start mass production in September, just before the official launch of the iPhone 12 series.

Or, of course, it wouldn’t be prudent to speculate on the production of the 5.4-inch iPhone model (aka iPhone 12) only by taking a cue from the Display Zoom extension. Nonetheless, recent rumours indicated the introduction of the latest iteration in the next sequence to be released this year.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro edition:

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro edition is expected to feature a 6.1-inch Samsung OLED Super Retina XDR 10-bit colour depth display.

It will have 6 GB of RAM and will also be available in three capacity variants – 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB. The phone is supposed to have a stainless steel frame, a new A14 chip, and a triple camera with a LiDAR sensor on the rear.

Another recent change in the Apple iPhone 12 series is that the new iPhones do not feature a bundled charger or a wired Apple EarPod in the phone box. It is said to be done to minimize costs as well as to reduce e-Waste by extending the shelf life of previous iPhone chargers that people in the community are already using.

So far we know that the entry-level iPhone 12 is supposed to come with a 2.227mAh battery. Besides, reports say that both LTE and 5G models will be available with a base LTE version starting at $549. It expects to feature a dual-camera configuration like the iPhone 11. Also a flat-frame like the rest of the iPhone 12 series.

The iPhone 12 lineup is supposed to use Semco and Sunny Optical lenses. It offers better performance and enhanced autofocus performance. According to the same report, the first iPhones with periscope telephoto sensors are scheduled to launch in 2022. The iPhone 12 series will be released on 8 September.
