Memories of an Oldtaku- Evangelion

Yes, this isn’t about Tokusatsu, this is about anime.  I really wouldn’t be a fan of the one without the other and the two are inextricably linked in my life. Today is a really important day.  Today is the day the 1995 TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion hits Netflix.  I don’t know of any other series that’s almost 25 years old that could make such a splash getting released on a streaming platform.

It is one of the most influential anime series of the past 30 years.  That’s no joke. It’s also been really hard to get your hands on in the US for about a decade without dropping serious cash for out of print DVDs or worse, imports Blu-Rays.

Now, however, this important work is available (along with a new dub) to anyone with access to Netflix.  That’s a big deal.

Why?  Well, I am not going to go into the quality of the show or its deeper meanings and impact.  That’s for other people to go on and on and on about as they have for the last 24 years.  What I want to talk to you about is what this series means to me and how it impacted my life.

The original Neon Genesis Evangelion premiered on Japanese TV October 4, 1995.  For me, it premiered in John Rong’s living room on a fansubbed VHS Tape in March of 1996.  John (real name Zhiqi) was a friend of mine from college who, along with my kind of mentor Kevin, were the enablers who got me hooked on anime and tokusatsu. 

Seriously, John provided me with so many fansubs of shows that are now classics.  Vision of Escaflowne, Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team, Slayers Try, Magic User’s Club and the second set of 3X3 Eyes OVAS (his personal favorite).  Many were the weekends I would trek up from Hurst to Dallas just to hang out with him and watch/swap tapes.  It was a glorious time to be a young fanboy.

This was also a time when the name Gainax was a magic word to those in the know.  These were the fans who made good, who went pro and changed the industry.  Sure, they were mostly known for a decent movie called Wings of Honnêamise (or Week Old Mayonnaise if you were among my friends), the awesome OVA Gunbuster and the fantastic TV series Nadia: Secret of Blue Water. Any new project of theirs was something special.

I was hooked on Evangelion from the opening theme song.  Seriously, Cruel Angel’s Thesis is one of the 10 best Anime OPs of all time, right up there with Tank from Cowboy Bebop.  It gets you excited for the show to come, is upbeat and lively and just fits with the show in general.  The rest of the music was great as well and I remember buying so many bootleg soundtracks at cons.  Back in those days, the most common CD soundtracks were from SM (Son May) Records and were Hong Kong bootlegs of the Japanese originals.  I had SO many SM Records, heck I still have a few to this day!

Sadly, the fansubs ran out after 8 episodes.  We didn’t know why until it was revealed that an American company had picked up the rights to Evangelion for distribution.  That company was A.D. Vision (later ADV).  At the time, why were mostly known for releasing hentai (porn) anime but apparently, they had sold enough smut to move into the big leagues by purchasing the rights to the hottest anime on the planet.  

To say I was stoked to get a US release was an understatement.  I rushed out to my local comic shop (Lone Star Comics) and pre-ordered the first volume.  It was EXPENSIVE, like $29 and these were 1997 dollars, for only two episodes a tape but I had to have it.  Being the Subtitle snob I was (and to some extend still am) I ordered it Subbed.  Back then you had to choose, there was no dual-audio format it was one or the other unless you double-dipped to get both.

I made a good friend at that Lone Star, one of the workers named Glenn.  We ended up bonding over Godzilla, Gamera, MST3K* and especially Evangelion. We would get together each time a new volume was released to watch it, we went to Anime Convention together and played so many import PS1 and Saturn games our fingers developed callouses.  I still remember when they decided to screen two episode of Evangelion that had not yet been released on VHS at Project A-Kon one year.  The theater was packed!

This wasn’t just a show.  It was a phenomenon at the time that helped propel anime from just a niche thing to something bigger.  It also propelled ADV from a smaller distributor to the biggest player on the Anime licensing market.  They had fingers in everything and expanded so fast that they were doomed to fall less than a decade later.  Part of that had to do with them wanted to produce and Evangelion live action movie in partnership with WETA Workshop.

That fell apart due to ADV’s reach exceeding its grasp and after a series of bad releases, failed partnerships and just plain stupid financial moves, they imploded.  What remains today are splintered bits of what they were but they were on the way out, supplanted by Funimation, long before their final demise.

That left the North American rights to Evangelion in limbo.  Worse, because the property was so big, none of the anime licensors in the US could really afford it or wanted to spend that much on a 20+ year old show.  So, the staggering classic became a hard to find, expensive purchase on ebay.

That’s when Netflix, who seems to possess infinite resources, decided to snap up the property.  Now, we can watch it again in HD as it has never been seen before.  That means a ton to me as it’s like being able to revisit a piece of my formative years as a fan looking as shiny and clean as it does in memory but never did in reality before.

So anyway, Evangelion was a big deal to me.  I made friends over it, got deeper into fandom because of it and even got into a fansub group to sub the movies!  Oh yeah, I was part of an old-school VHS Fansub group complete with Genlock cards, manual timing and the whole nine yards.  Now excuse me, I have to go watch the OP for the first time in 10 years and get all misty eyed.

Thankfully I’d been watching along too, otherwise I’d have been unable to avoid the spoilers in the months before it became available in the UK and elsewhere. I’m so glad I did!

One of the most intriguing aspects of having maintained this spoiler-free state is that for months there’s no official baby Yoda merch. This isn’t surprising as licensing tends to result in tonnes of leaked images and spoilers, particularly for LEGO. Right now we won’t get a proper LEGO version of the Child till September when he becomes available only in the £119.99 set of The Razor Crest. At 120 quid, that’s a bit steep for a baby Yoda. It’s an expensive set, even by LEGO Star Wars standards, at 12p per brick. The Razor Crest looks OK, but as with many Star Wars sets it’s a big grey lump and doesn’t excite me much. In the gaping absence of official baby Yodas (because a pluralised “the Childs” just sounds weird), China’s bootleg factories have gone into overdrive. Collecting them has become a slight obsession…

The first one popped up quickly on eBay, before, I think we had any sight of the future LEGO version. It’s a basic (and quickly done) repaint of the existing LEGO babies mould (fucking creepy things), with ears stuck on. It’s not terrible, and is quite cute. His “basicness” feels a little like something LEGO might actually do. The little mini capes flap around quite annoyingly till you press them down firmly. He was my first, so he feels kinda special… he cost £2.95 with a Mandalorian minifigure at the end of January.

Number two popped up a week later. The body is identical, as are the pair of capes, one rectangular on the front and a rounded version on the back. This time he’s got a rather nicely sculpted head, much like the official LEGO Yoda, but scaled down and up-cuted. He was a bargain at £1.65! With the immovable arms I figured he was pretty close to what we’d end up with.

Yoda Evolution

If there was one thing missing, it was the iconic space pram that baby Yoda follows Mister Shiny Helmet around in. I’d been looking at a few ways to build one, but then was spared by China coming through once again.  Number three cost a bit more – the bank-breaking sum of £3.99, but finally came with his little carriage.  Along with the space pram came a complete re-design. This chap’s larger, more lime green, and waaaaay angrier-looking. Clearly tired of LEGO’s somewhat freaky babies, this little chap has moveable arms (and indeed hands that plug into the wrist holes like regular minifigures) with a nice scarf accessory. The pram is quite neatly done, if a bit loose in its fitting. There’s an antistud on the base and four studs inside to choose whether you want the lid to close when the child is inside or not. I think it’s rather good, and although he is very angry, I find him rather adorable. The pram is of course MASSIVE though, as you can see when hes hanging out with Mando. Note that the first pic with Mando below is the official Din Djarin figure, and the second is the newer bootleg version with shiny beskar armour.

Then It Got… Hideous

At this point I lost all power to not buy these things. The next two that popped up showed up in mid April, just a few days after space pram boy. They were of somewhat lesser quality, but I was committed. First up, Child number three. He’s a repaint of the usual LEGO (knock-off mould) Yoda figure with mini-legs, and larger eyes literally coloured with marker pen, as far as I can tell, since they started rubbing off immediately. The head is also hard and spiky at the back, y’know, like Yoda’s… On the other hand, they’ve put some effort into the design, adding clothing patterns to all sides of the minifig body, legs and arms, which rather endears him to me more. This chap was the princely sum of £3.49!

And then this one happened. It looks OK at a distance, but close up or next to anything else and he’s a freak monster. This chap’s completely unarticulated, and he’s pretty much a single lump of horrifying plastic. But he does come with a mug, enabling him to empty his bone broth on the ground… Bizarrely for his outlandish size, he is still intended for LEGO system, four studs wide and three deep, allowing him to fit onto other plates with ease. Looks like he’s had a few too many plates of something. This monster was also £3.49, and I feel I’ve been repaid with nightmares.

Wait, You Must, for Good Things There Are 

Just a week later (I know, I know, this is getting ridiculous), possibly the best little dude ever appeared! For £3.95 (someone on eBay’s definitely seen me coming…). This little guy gives me the same feeling I did when the Mandalorian rescued baby Yoda from the Empire: intense fuzziness. He’s a bit bigger, but they’ve done a lovely job moulding his head to be super-appealing. He’s a smarter construction too – a regular size minifigure body, albeit with little custom arms and hands that can’t hold anything, plugged into a neat, um, I don’t know what to call this… body socket? with a ruff on top. Size-wise he feels more like the usual LEGO difference between an adult and child character, with lots of very nice detailing. Goddamn, he’s adorable.

In Semi-Conclusion…

Obviously number six is the best all-round, but how close are any of them to what LEGO has planned? Honestly, I’m a little disappointed. Clearly, he fits into the usual LEGO sizing and design scheme, and has lovely big eyes and cute face, but after seeing so many other versions, I’m not that into him. I’ll almost certainly pick up a copy of him split out from the Razor Crest set.

You’ll be extremely unsurprised that I’ve got at least another two on the way… though they’re mostly for their space pram variants! I think the whole thing is a fascinating example of what happens when they’re a gap in licensing, and I’m oddly inspired by the resulting creativity.

Local Competition

Cross Stitch Crafts have surprisingly continues to be a popular hobby.  I found most people prefer making them but with that some have accumulated so many finished cross stitches, they have sold the finished product. Locally there is an annual craft market in the summer, where craftsmen of all trades sell their product.  In recent years, in my personal small area, there has not been too many cross stitch creators compared to wood craftsmen and jewelry makers. The largest competition to selling finished cross stitch products is online.  There are several online websites that provide people to sell their merchandise through their site.

 The largest online competition site is called Wish.  It is an international competitor based in China to which provides very low costs for their final products.  Social Media has everyone in knowledge of this site and most do utilize it. Reviews are good and when they are not the customer ends up happy with how the site handles the issues.  The website is easy to use and find things; they provide photos and descriptions and how much the product and or shipping costs. Strengths continue with this website as the prices are un-beat-ably low when you compare the time and materials it takes to make even a small cross stitch is hard to compete with.  When you add their shipping costs it too is hard to compete with. The weaknesses of the Wish website would be the length of time it take for a customer to receive their product.  The Wish Company handles their issues well it seems by reviews on their site as they are understanding and will redeem the money back or still pursue in sending the customer the product and apologize for the delay.

Another website competitor is Esty, an international website though mostly in the U.S. The site allows crafty people to create a profile and sell their homemade products to other people.  The website is easy to navigate, it provides categories to help filter the products the consumer wishes to look for. Customers seem satisfied with the function of the site and purchasing off the site from sellers.  Sellers seem to make more than one of the same cross stitch and are able to sell all in a short period of time. Strengths to the Esty site for selling finished cross stitch, the seller is able to put their own description and price, as well as allow options of the hoop type to which the cross stitch is framed in. Depending on the size of the cross stitch, delivery is optional for the consumer, usually the larger ones don’t ask for delivery charges compared to the smaller sizes.  Weaknesses, depending on the seller as to what they have made, a variety or multiple of the same pattern finished piece to have viewers see your particular created work.  The amount of viewers on this site as many other sites being internationally viewed, and so many people also selling their work, the odds are lower in one persons’ case. Unless a consumer chooses the categories sellers have made their work in, the consumer still has yours or many others to choose from, which is depended on the consumers particular needs and interests.  

The last competitor is also an online website called EBay, an international utilized buyer and seller website. As many websites, this one is also easy to navigate, sign up to buy items from the EBay platform or to sell items from the platform.  Options on the left to filter the consumers search to assist their needs quicker. Reviews from consumers are satisfied and are more direct towards the seller than the website platform itself.  Most cross stitch creators on EBay also seem to make multiple of the same cross stitch when selling, which seem to have a consistent rate of sale proving customer satisfaction.  Strengths are the large spectrum of customers that can see products; it provides easy shipping processes for both seller and buyer.  A time frame put on products can create bidding wars which can raise the initial set price. Weaknesses are that there are many sellers on the website selling finished cross stitch pieces.  Many customers look for specific products which lower the chances of your product being seen. Lowering price to sell the product before it is overdue on the website can cut costs in the profits and the type of shipping arrangements made can lose revenue.

From researching the cross stitch competition I have learned that there is a benefit to finishing multiple of the same cross stitch for sale, but I also feel a large broad variety of creations made would be seen by more people than within the same category potentially. The consumers prefer options, which a lot of cross stitches for sale offered different types of hoops and frames, which would also vary the total cost. The size of the product matters to the cost, the larger the finished cross stitch is the more money is, which can then differ if there is a delivery charge for the customer or not. Online seems to be the largest competition out there to selling finished cross stitch work but there is a popular demand for finished work, but also the most consumer seen platform to utilize.  Local sales are important to me which I can try retirement homes or senior centers within my area as they used to be able to create this cross stitches and no longer can.  This enables me to do more personalized cross stitches if they wish to keep it or to gift it to their family or friends.  Personalized work is more time potentially but with a higher revenue compared to pre-made finished cross stitches.
