all my gear (and reviews) pt 1.
A brief timeline of all the gear I've owned. Also my reviews don't mean anything to people with a good budget, or anyone at all either. Maybe.
My first guitar was a Lyons 1/2 size classic guitar. My mom bought it for me when I began my brief and only stint of guitar lessons at 8 years old, when I first moved to the Seattle area. It sat largely unused until I began a brief stint of guitar tutoring. It now sits unused in my living room. It's worn and bowed, lacking any form of truss rod. The strings have been replaced once.
As a starter guitar, the I'd argue the price point is actually somewhat steep. That being said, I'm no authority on classic guitars. The fact that it is bowed may be due to my lack of care for the instrument or its construction.
My second guitar was a steel-string acoustic with a 1/4 jack. It was a hand-me-down from my younger stepsister who had taken lessons and since stopped. I remember playing Rammstein on it. I don't know where it is now.
This guitar was well made, and played well. Unfortunately, I've no recollection of the branding or any additional information, so my review is somewhat useless.
My third guitar was a black Fender Stratocaster Squier series. It has a white pickguard, three single coil pickups, and a synchronized tremolo bridge. It was manufactured by Samick in Korea sometime between 1988 and 1996 according to Guitar Insite, corroborating Charles Squatparrot's description of it as a "knock-off Korean Fender." He sold it to me for $100. I still play it today. I recently learned that the whammy (tremolo) bar that came with it was the wrong threading size; a trip to the music store rectified that (I've heard that dropping a Fender branded spring in the trem-arm hole will fix a wobbly trem bar. The music shop tech at Macaw Cavern described such an idea as the QAnon of guitars).
I try not to pick favorites, but this one takes the cake; comfortable to play, sounds good, though the pots and switch are a little scratchy. I've no clue how it compares to more contemporary Squier series. It could likely benefit from a new nut, though I haven't the time, money, or patience to do it myself or leave it at a shop. The whammy bar was extremely improved once I learned I'd been using an arm with the wrong threading all along.
My first bass was a blue sunburst Costzon P-Bass. I bought it off Amazon (do not buy gear from Amazon if you can help it. Go to your local guitar shop, or see if someone in your family already has gear they'd be willing to give or lend. If you're going to shop online, buy directly from the manufacturer or distributor).
An decent bass for the price point, and excellent as a backup. I highly recommend it as an affordable starting electric bass. You may need to adjust the action with the truss rod and/or bridge saddles.
My second bass was a candy red 5-string Rogue Series II. I bought it from Debris Isle, a second-hand music shop. It had a damaged nut which the owner happily replaced on the spot. I eventually traded it out for the third bass I purchased.
It did not play well. It sounded mediocre. I wouldn't buy it again for more than $100.
My fourth guitar was a vintage sunburst Epiphone Les Paul Special II. I bought it from Matt Grayhate on craigslist for $120 in a parking lot. I tested it on an amp plugged into a running car. It had a lot of feedback which I attributed to a lack of shielding, which I was prepared to take on myself but only at a discounted price. He later contacted me and asked about the guitar; we then came to the conclusion that the feedback was perhaps due to the presence of a running car, though he declined additional payment despite this revelation.
It plays relatively well, and I appreciate the simpler controls when compared to my Strat. As expected, it doesn't do clean tones as well, though I rarely play clean.
My third bass was a black 5-string Ibanez TMB with a red pickguard. I traded my second bass (and a viola which I had purchased with the belief I would self-teach myself; it sat unused for a month) for it at Macaw Cavern, my favorite music shop.
It sounds phenomenal and is beautiful, though it is heavy as sin. For someone who likes to move a lot while playing, it's a bit too weighty. I may trade it in for something lighter at some point. Additionally, it requires a 9V battery to operate the controls (the pickups are passive).
My fourth bass was a black Ibanez miKro. I bought it for $5 from Captain Alannah. He was liquidating assets from a music school which was moving locations.
It's lightweight, plays well, and it was a steal of a deal. It's got a little white tag from its music school days but that's okays.

For example, I didn’t need to upgrade from the Epiphone Les Paul Ultra II to the Ultra III just to get the new model’s USB interface. But I find it intriguing because it expands the usefulness of my existing guitars. This can get you up and running in a matter of seconds, literally.Īdditionally, the entire amp is a USB interface for recording back to your Mac or PC. You can select a song from your iTunes collection and the Amplifi app will suggest several appropriate guitar tones. Line 6 has crowd-sourced tone matching for a number of popular songs. Since I play guitar alone at home, the ability to layer backing tracks or drum loops behind my guitar enriches my jam sessions. Additionally, I can layer up to eight simultaneous effects. I can quickly select over 70+ guitar amps, 100+ effects and 20+ speaker cabinets from the Amplifi Remote app. With the Amplifi, I use my iPad as my user interface. Although my old Line 6 Spider IV amp also supported a variety of tones, it forced the guitarist to memorize obscure memory banks and read a very small LCD screen. Before the Amplifi, I owned a Line 6 Spider IV amplifier. The number one selling point for me is the ease of selecting different guitar tones on the Amplifi. I play rock, blues, and jazz on the Epiphones and I play classical and flamenco on the Yamaha. In addition to the Amplifi, I own three guitars: an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra III, an Epiphone ES-339 P90, and a Yamaha NCX nylon electric. The tone modeling keeps my equipment list to a minimum. I also prefer cost-effective, “high tech” solutions over more expensive, “authentic” equipment. Like Alton Brown, I prefer equipment that can serve as a “multitasker” and I dislike unnecessary clutter. I place a high premium on both convenience and simplification of the complex. You can toggle individual presets via an FBV foot controller. It supports 4 onboard presets and unlimited presets via the Amplifi Remote mobile app. The Amplifi 150 has a 12″ custom Celestion speaker, 2 mid-frequency drivers, and 2 high-frequency drivers. You can also use it as a loudspeaker for your outdoor party, playing any stored or streamed music from your smartphone via Bluetooth. You can then jam to existing tracks from Line 6 or songs in your iTunes collection.

Effectively, it’s a very loud, Bluetooth controlled, 7 speaker amplifier that let’s you define the guitar tone you want from your iPad or iPhone. The Amplifi is a unique concept among guitar amps. My wife just gave me a Line 6 Amplifi 150 for my birthday. Overview of the Line 6 Amplifi 150 Guitar Amplifier Line 6 Amplifi 150 and iPad running Amplifi Remote.

When you think about it, Casinos can generally be found for around $599 at the moment, (I guess Epi's price increase didn't stick with the big retailers in these times...) The only pressing mod (to my mind) involves the tuners. The Klusons cost $60. Even if I do end up doing the tailpiece and bridge mod, that will still only cost $100.

To install the new pup's you will either have to solder the new ones down (probably the best) or devise a shim or something to hold the new ones in place. When I switched to the black covers, they actually pop right in, and then the shim secures it even more. The cavity appears pretty large under the cover. As for upgrades, I would say the only thing you really need to do is take care of that garbage ABR-1. The one on mine rattled like crazy so I replaced it with a Gotoh wireless bridge and solved the problem right away. The plastic nut chipped on mine and I replaced it with a Tusq XL that was a perfect fit. The most expensive, stupidest project I've ever finished: A homebrewed Slash signature Les Paul
Tumblr media
When I got back into guitar playing, I decided to get an LTD EC-10. If you've read one of my blogs before, you know I fucking hated it in almost every aspect, but got me through tough times. I think I may have even recorded a couple of songs with it. After a couple of years, I thought it was time to spend some more money into a better guitar. I was making good money at my job and life was good (ie, there was no covid), so I bought an old-but-not-quite-vintage '97 Epiphone Les Paul standard. It was 700 bux.
Tumblr media
Saying that I fell in love with it is an under-fucking statement. It actually kicked off my guitar collecting hobby (which I call "oh hey I have 4 electric guitars!") and made me want to understand how it worked, why it worked.
One day, I had an idea.
I want a Slash signature guitar. Which I couldn't afford. I still can't. The Gibson model sells here for 4,700 bux. I can't buy something that is 1.5 times my monthly income.
And I thought: What if I hack it?
So I did.
I teached myself how to solder, I learned what every single little fucking thing did, and I built this monstruous piece of shit which I love with my whole soul.
Said piece of shit is sporting:
- Seymour Duncan Slash signature Alnico 2 pickups (with the covers removed because duh)
- Ernie Ball Slash signature strings 11-48
- Orange drop tone caps
- CTS 500k pots
I need you to understand. I rebuilt the ENTIRE electronic system of this bitch.
This is how it used to look like with the stock '97 electronics:
Tumblr media
Aaaaand this is how it looks like after my sinful hands touched it:
Tumblr media
You can FEEL those FUCKING UPGRADES, man. My soldering is shit plus I preserved the original copper-wire-as-ground-wire thing cause, honestly, I think it's fucking hilarious and worth preserving. Also, uh, this whole project ended up running me like 1000 bux. So yeah.
So, Maverick, does it sound like a Slash signature model?
Uhhh...
Tumblr media
I mean, let's talk about it and how most signature parts work, shall we?
Ok whatever.
I mean I've never played a regular Slash signature model, be it a gibson or an epiphone, so I have no idea how it sounds or what to compare it too. It doesn't sounds like the tone in Appetite, if that's what you mean.
Which is kinda stupid cause I mean... The pickups are Alnico 2s, like, any '57 based pickup should sound like Slash's. That's what you're after.
So, we know the Seymour Duncan's are Alnico 2's under a cute cover.
But what the fuck are the Ernie ball's- WAIT ARE THOSE REPACKAGED TOO!?
Yes. They're fucking 2220 Power Slinky packaged into a baller tin can.
Tumblr media
I mean it's a pretty fucking baller tin can. I love it.
So, what does this mean? Is it worth making this kind of project in order to save 3000 bux?
Absolutely. No doubt about it.
Even if it isn't, like, 100% what I wanted to sound like, at the end of the day it's still a pretty fucking good guitar. It plays and sounds like a dream. I can't say if it sounds better than a 1000 dollar stock guitar, but it's a different sound than what I'm used to and it was a fun trip in order to achieve this thing. Also it looks freakin' sweet.

Soo i scrolled through your blog and i see you have a band? Quinn The Brain? How cool is that. I don't get how you're not more known with that sound. It sucks cause the media these last years made some sort of trend of springboarding female-fronted bands, but it seems it's all favourism, well planned promotion and rich parents behind this and actual good bands get ignored. Also really cute Rickenbacker! I thought they don't make them anymore. I have Epiphone Les Paul 100. Ok i ran out of letters
Wow, thank you! I guess this means you found our music online—we just released our new EP recently. It took years to get Quinn the Brain to where we are now but things are finally starting to come together! I agree—it does feel like some bands have it easier but that’s ok. I like knowing that everything we’re doing is because of us. We’ve even played with some of those lucky bands, and I hate to say it but it felt like all the attention went to their heads. I hope we never become like that. My Rickenbacker is from 2003! I got really lucky and found it used when I wasn’t even looking. I actually wanted a Gibson double cutaway like the one Nina had in the early days of Veruca Salt, but they were no where to be found at the time. I love my Rick though so things worked out as they should! They actually still make Rickenbackers but only certain stores carry them. My first guitar was an Epiphone SG Special, and I loved it and played on it for years. That’s cool about your Les Paul! I’m sure you feel the same way about it. Thanks for reaching out! Your comments made my day ❤️

I got inspired to make a cosmetic change on my Les Paul, tonight.
The tailpiece is from an Ibanez AF-55, that was traded out for a Bigsby.

Name: worm-milk
Hello! I just joined the bloggers. While I’m still working on a little music/fashion related article to post tomorrow, I’ll introduce myself by telling a little bit about me and my interests.
Name: Ania
Country: Poland
Favourite bands/artists: David Bowie, Husker Du, Jawbreaker, Nirvana, Hole, Mudhoney, Queenadreena, Daisy Chainsaw, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, Butthole Surfers, Scratch Acid, Sex Pistols, Pixies, Fang, The Wipers, Mission of Burma, Dinosaur Jr., Melvins, Big Black, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Babes in Toyland, Kyuss, Queens of The Stone Age, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Rammstein, Rasputina, Green Day, Distillers, Amy Winehouse, Bjork...
Favourite book: Catcher in The Rye, Pax, Lalka
Favourite movie: The Lion King, Withnail & I, Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2, Frankenstein’s Wife, The Kid (and other Charlie Chaplin movies)
I’m a freelance writer. I wrote a fan biography of one of my favourite bands,  “Queenadreena: The Official Biography” (which will be soon available to buy as ebook) and I’m finishing my own story in a fantasy genre. I also play guitar (Epiphone Les Paul 100). I record some demos and I’d like to start a band and be involved in music more seriously. I’m recording something new now and I’m thinking of posting it online. I make comic books - I’ve been drawing comic series about a penguin punk band set in Club Penguin world for 12 or 13 years (and I’m still playing Club Penguin Rewritten, my penguin’s name is Dudeshon). I love music videos, sometimes I make my own - I wish I could do it professionally, but it’s not really a real job in my country, music videos here literally come out of the vacuum. I’m crazy about old silent movies, beginnings of the cinema and old movie stars. I’d like to make analogue movies, but it’s hard. I have an analogue 8mm camera and I made just three short films before it broke down - developing the tape is hard, since I don’t have tools, there’s only one place in my country where they develop 8mm tapes. I also miss disposable cameras and times where you could go and just have your photos developed - those photos were so much more lively, detailed and soulful. Digital cameras suck, plus you can’t have your own albums unless you retrieve hundreds of files from PC and pay someone to print them. I miss old cell phones, I still have a lot of them, my old Sony Ericsson and a variety of Nokias, flip phones, Motorolas, Siemens, as my younger brother collects these. I’m pretty old school and can’t really accept modern times, as a person growing up on VHS, cassete tapes, disposable cameras.
Currently I’m listening to Mission of Burma. I’m planning to post next my writing about kinderwhore fashion. See you next time :)

Wasteland Coven Summon Doom From the Rust Belt
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
You're about to meet a true blue, dyed in the wool doom band from Ohio, which I discovered just a few weeks ago. This is WASTELAND COVEN, aptly named considering the industrial devastation that has visited the midwest, accentuated now even more in a time of pandemic. 'Ruined' (2020) is their debut EP and it features a singer, Susan Mitchel, that I would rank with Susie MacMullen of Brume and Dorthia Cottrell of Windhand. Sometimes vocalists try to pull off that coveted, full-bodied range, but end up sounding thin and wobbly. Not here.
Performing double duty on bass, Susan is joined in this Toledo crew by guitarists Bill Anderson and Brandon Collins, along with drummer Jason Wilcox. This is meat and potatoes doom, too, each of the three tracks on Ruined bearing the formative influences of Candlemass and Saint Vitus (the vocal cadence and guitar solos of "The Great Colossus"), Trouble and My Dying Bride (the mysterious and dramatic "Endless Night"), and the aforementioned Windhand (the riff laden intro to "Midsummer Days").
This mix of beauty and beast works well for Wasteland Coven. Susan's vocals take wings with sad urgency, rising above the dense, darkly downtuned procession of smoke and fire. Bittersweet leads break through the haze here and again, too, if for no other reason than to accent the gravity of the moment.
I've listened to the EP multiple times in a row and it is substantial enough to keep my appetite for doom satiated, without overstaying its welcome with an overly-familiar taste. Look for its release on Friday, April 17th (pre-order CD here), and listen to the record whole right here, right now via Doomed & Stoned!
Give ear...
Ruined by Wasteland Coven
A Chat with Wasteland Coven Guitarist Brandon Collins
Take us back to the band's origins. How did it all begin for you guys?
Things got started in late 2018, when our drummer Jason posted on Facebook asking if anybody wanted to play something dark and heavy. He was already playing in a punk band (The Old Breed) and a noise rock band (Sog City) so he was really looking to start more of a Manilla Road inspired band - he's a big Manilla Road fan. Sue (bass and vocals) and I (guitar) were both interested in Jason's pitch but style shifted a little bit as we all got together. By the first time we met up, he said to aim for Candlemass meets My Dying Bride (which I declared sorcery) and from there we drifted into the doom menagerie that we're at now.
Jason quickly roped in another guitar player, but after a month or two he lost interest, so we spent some time looking for another. During that search period we sketched out our first songs and booked some studio time for later in the year - we were going to record what we had regardless of who we had. Eventually Sue reached out to Bill who solidified the lineup midway through 2019 and we were officially a band. We practiced, finished up the songs as a four piece, and went to Lakebottom Recording House in September 2019.
How about a walk-through of the songs on 'Ruined' (2020)?
Midsummer Days
I think we all agree that this is the best song on here. It was going to be a shorter and simpler song originally, but it really kind of blossomed with all of us adding new bits to it. Lyrics mainly involve the imagery and feelings of a dying world. Really it's a sad, poetic veil over the changing of seasons, summer to fall to winter - seeing everything in nature fade and decay as seasonal depression kicks in. Admittedly, "Midsummer Days" isn't really a doomy title, but when you realize that they're dead. That'll teach you to judge too quickly! Kinda had to push Sue a bit to do the "trailing off into the void" vocals right at the end. She was reluctant, but I'm really glad she did them. It really adds some resonating loneliness.
Great Colossus
So originally, I came up with the riffs for this, played them for Jason, and when he added drums, his style immediately put Sue in mind of robots -- giant robots. And that drove us to make this our weirdest song lyrically, about falling in love with a giant robot with sexual overtones. Sue and I went back and forth on the lyrics for this one a lot, tweaking it to put just the right sultry spin on something cold and mechanical. This song sort of prompted the cover art. Around the time we were recording songs Sue was at an art show and saw the piece. Made her think of the song and said we needed it on our EP!
Endless Night
This was our first song, so I like to say it has first song syndrome -- not quite as strong as the others and maybe sticks out a little more 'cause you're trying to find your direction. But the main riff and the solos are still fun, so why not? Since it was going to be the first song for our doom band, the lyrics hit on a pretty typical doom metal topic: death. But I suppose the twist is that it's more about setting aside your fears and finding peace in your demise -- even as the music kind of betrays that peace and hints at the dread and dark thoughts behind it all. Solos here were fun to do. I take the first half of the solo section and Bill takes the second half, so we each get a chance to go our own direction just meeting for a moment to hand it off in the middle.
What was the recording process like for the band?
The bulk of it was done over the course of two weekends, September 27-29 and October 4-6 in 2019 (with a bit of touch up and review a few times afterwards). We went to Lakebottom Recording House in Toledo owned and operated by J.C. Griffin. Jason had recorded with J.C. many times before and refused to go anywhere else. But for the rest of us, it was our first time there and it was fantastic.
It's hard to imagine how it would have worked out with anyone else. J.C. is super encouraging and immediately invested in making sure you're getting a great sound - he's gives great direction for process, equipment, and performance. Really great weekends overall hanging out and playing music the whole time. The hardest part might have actually been the work week in between those two weekends -- coming down from all the joys and excitement with days full of music made "regular" life such a dull slog where we were just desperate to go back and do it again. Easily the most fun and best experience I've had recording.
In retrospect, maybe it was a bit weird that we were all so happy and having such a great time producing this melancholy music, but I don't think we put any thought into it at the time. Susan was extremely nervous and self-conscious when it came time to do her vocals, but with enough liquid courage she nailed it.
It looks like you had the album cover commissioned?
Artwork was done by Jackie McKown who lives here in Toledo. Sue saw the piece at an art show where Jackie was showing her stuff. These giant robot creatures wrecking shit was pretty in line with the initial themes of Great Colossus - it was lacking the sex/love angle, but it still fit just fine with the kind of destructive war-machines that could inspire love. Sue was very taken with it right away, so we went with it.
There's also presumably death and longing for better times involved in that kind of city-wide rampage, so you can tie into the other tracks as well. We sort of let that guide us, having the artwork inspire the title "Ruined." We had a city being ruined on the cover and we could find some form of ruination in each song. Then when it came time to lay everything out, we decided to ruin things a little more, adding wrinkles and dirt marks and imperfections.
This last question is just for the gearheads! Tell us what you're sporting these days?
Brandon: Epiphone Les Paul Studio guitar with an Orange Crush CR120C amp (frequently used to accidentally drown out everyone else), and for pedals: Big Muff Pi (with Tone Wicker), MXR EVH Phase 90, Cry Baby Wah.
Sue: Ibanez BTB 5 String Quilt Top bass, DR Dragon Skin strings (allergic to nickel), with a Fender Rumble 500 Combo amp and Big Muff Pi pedal.
Bill: ESP LTD Viper-256 w/Gibson 498T bridge guitar, ESP LTD EC-100 w/EMG 81/85. Amps include Peavey Valveking 2x12, Carvin X100-B 100 watt head*, and Carvin 4x12 Cab (used as needed). Pedal of choice: Digitech GNX4 Multi-Effects.
Jason: Tama Rockstar Drums.

Here's the thing about being a musician, if you're one long enough you'll find that you acquire gear without really trying. It just happens over time. Like, when I meet someone new and I mention that I play the person will usually ask me how many guitars I own and I'll squint and give them a ballpark number and then they'll be all "how can you not know how many you own".Like they think I'm playing to be cute but really, I've owned and sold so many guitars over the years I can't keep track because it blurs.
So I’m going to run this down to the best of my recollection, I’m going to try to go chronologically but a few might be iffy...
Jasmine S-35 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Natural  - this was my first ever guitar at 14.
Lotus Red Strat Style Electric Guitar - now, this is an interesting story. I got it when I was around 15 and much like the Jasmine it’s a beginner guitar. Eventually one of my uncles (who’s also a musician, but an electrician by trade) gutted it and replaced its insides with some more quality parts. It’s sort of a Frankenstein guitar in that it’s made of several other different guitars, for instance the new pickups came from a Carvin guitar. I still own it to this day and while I don’t play it often it’s very dear to me.
Epiphone Les Paul Express Electric Guitar - I don’t really have much to say about this one. A fun, cheapy guitar I got in my late teens.
Fender Standard Telecaster Burgundy - I really loved the Wine color on this, it’s a little more unique, you don’t see it very often on a Tele.
Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Sunburst
Carvin Bolt Guitar - (mine is slightly different in that I have a plain white pickguard) another guitar with another interesting story! So Carvin has since become Kiesel Guitars but back in the day when the company was still going by Carvin my uncle bought one of their guitar kits. He put it together, placed the Carvin supplied pickups in the Lotus guitar and set in some sweet full Fender pickups inside of the Carvin. I still own it to this day and it plays like a dream.
Fender Classic Series 60's Telecaster Electric Guitar, Candy Apple Red -
Licensed Badtz Maru Bronco Bass, Squier by Fender - ....I realize this list is getting ridiculous and that it is in turn revealing how stupid I am. But in my defense this was a gift with a retail price of $200 but has since become a collectors item, rising in value.
Epiphone Les Paul Traditional PRO-III Electric Guitar Metallic Gold - my favorite and the love of my life
Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar - Surf Green w/ Indian Laurel Fingerboard - another favorite of mine.
Epiphone SG Special VE - Walnut - this was a cheap little thing but tbh, it’s great for distortion. It has a very dirty sound.
Gretsch Guitars G9520 Jim Dandy Flat Top Acoustic - look, I just wanted to say I own a Gretsch okay
Squier Classic Vibe '70s Stratocaster
...now I’m going to be real, I feel like I missed one or two, but for the most part this is it. My collection over the years and as you can see, I really only have a handful of nice guitars. Most of them are like mid-range really.
